Hello! Do you mind me asking what that pastel type brush is that you use? And if you ever do speedpaints? I love the look you achieve with your work so much! thank you!

The pastel brush is uh... Kyle T. Webster's Ultimate Pastel Palooza brush. This is only for photoshop but looks like his brushes are also in procreate? Maybe it's in there as well.

I've actually been thinking a lot about doing speedpaints! But every time I sit down to draw I forget to record! I learned how to do digital art with an app called Colors! Live (specifically the 3ds version called Colors! 3D). All of your drawings were automatically recorded and when you uploaded it to their website it uploaded the recording along with it! I learned a lot about drawing and digital art techniques by watching playbacks of all my favorite artists. I would like to pay that forward to any new beginning and aspiring artists....

Panel 3 shows a 2D stick figure looking to the west and saying, "Blank space!". A yellow splat in the middle of the screen reads in all caps, "Wrong!", then shows the stick figure being viewed from another angle so they, and their dialogue box, appear as nothing but a straight line against a light blue background, with a section of white on their Left labeled, "the alongside being - aka their name for any dimension beyond the perception of a lower-dimensional being".

Panel 4 reads in all caps large text at the top, "but what is the plot?!?!", then reads:

"The plot is that every 15 years winters get really cold and bad. But this time it's gonna be the end of the world. Because Ardaea is apparently gonna crash into Astria entirely. And is gonna plunge their planet into Death Winter. A rich guy named Cartwright starts building underground shelters packed with supplies to try and help people survive.

His brother is a guy named High Farmer and he believes in the 3rd Dimension and claims to be able to use it somehow to make himself float and all this crap which he literally never demonstrates.

Hugh teams up with a soldier named Harold Wall to try and convince people that the Third Dimension will somehow magically save them all. And you might be thinking, 'Oh! Because they're gonna ask for help from 3D beings, right?' Wrong.

No the plan is to literally create a dictatorship and force everyoen to pray that Ardaea doesn't crash into them.

And then this works. For some reason.

Despite none of Hugh Farmer's claims about being able to use T 3 D to fly ever being demonstrated. And then they're all talking about being able to use T 3 D to grow…extra eyes? And all this crap??? It's not reasonable.

And while all this is very much not going on, there's a crappy romance between Laura Cartwright, the daughter of the rich guy who was building shelters, and Harold Wall, the now-Dictator. She's the one who introduced him to Hugh Farmer, her uncle.

It's implied many times that they're soulmates. They miscommunicate a lot and also Harold is an asshole anyways.

Also early in the book there was a lady named Mrs. Castle who was implied to be a 3D being or at least friends with one. We were told we'd get this explained soon. Then she was never mentioned again.

But then the author was going on about 2D beings having 3D souls so that's. Apparently what he meant. He was a really bad writer."

Panel 5 is black with white text, reading:

"It was so boring and convoluted it was literally making me fall asleep.

So the moral of the story is set up a dictatorship to make people pray the world doesn't end and it simply won't. Because your soul is a tiny 4D thing piloting the mecha of your giant 3D body. also if you think about it really hard you can probably grow yourself an extra eye or something. Somehow. For some reason.

It's bad. 0/10 do not recommend."

Duckling Pseudo 3D – by field and shallow river

Game is about joyful duckling, which is running across the field. So, big and yellow duckling, which runs by the field. It shakes with little wings. And, one thing, he does not doing here - it is jumps. And he runs forward and collects little coins. Such little circles, and they have a drawing with little duckling! Game is about to collect scores. And for free time and good mood. Theme of a good and kind animals, one more time!

So, one time, idea of the game, came into my head, idea of a game, where a big duckling at the half of the screen. And such a yellow. He runs, something like this. And view from the back. Something like pseudo three-dimensional plane.

Spirits Space Harrier or more simple, but, this kind of type. Duckling is so big and yellow. He shakes with little wings. Maybe, he has a good mood for today. And for, every day, always. Everyday is like this. He run across the field. Across the little grass. Across, the little water, swamp, earth. He runs through bush, little grass.

Runs by small stones. Everyplace, we see a running yellow duckling, here and there, he is everywhere. Also, it is in my head, some graphics with three dimensional pictures from mode 5 for game console Super Nintendo. And, this is straight continue for theme good and kind little animals.

Game with screen mode 7 with programming language Qb64. It is 16 colors and 320 at 200 screen resolution. Picture consists of graphics primitives. Circle, line. And painted with one of the colors. Visual side can look strange a little, arthouse. Or normal. So, it goes this way, I start to make it, and have such a result about visual. I draw for some time objects, I use imagination to create elements of visual state. And use certain this possibilities – 16 colors and line and circle, out of this all the game is made.

So, how nice for duckling to run there. It happens, that there is under the feet some little water, not deep. Or field with grass. Duckling can run across the bush, even like this. So, he is like he is - duckling! Big and yellow. Of course, here it will be a field with grass. To run by field and grass – it is most good thing, main thing, thing you need.

Of course, everything starts in a field. Run across the field. Bright weather. Good and so big field around. There are lots of green grass! And, later, already, it is going a different levels. And darker one. And with little of water. So, like shallow little water, or dark soil. Levels with different color tones.

But, main, – idea – run by field. And, around, there are lots of grass! So, you can imagine how interesting all of these for duckling. To run though grass and to see what is forward, at the horizon! So, it is there  - a whole adventure! So, it is easy to say, across all over the world! For duckling – field and everything, that is around – it is a whole world, indeed. Whole planet. Where duckling lives!

Duckling runs by himself, automatically. It is like runner. And with a third person view. And with arrows left and right – you control the moves by screen. And, you need to collect such a big coins. It is, also, drawn a duckling at this coins. This is a game score. So, it is all you need to do here.

Imagine for yourself, a good summer weather. And duckling, which wakes up in the morning and start to run at the field! So, this is a game idea. There are different levels here. They are different with background. And, I draw a lot of different colorful grass. Green – it is grass. Brown - it is bush. Black circles or colorful circles – it is stones. Not big colorful beautiful little stones in water. I remember, how at the countryside, I like to search these little stones in a shallow river.

Once again, theme of a game, again about a countryside. But, not from the eyes of a countryside dude, and by the ducklings eyes. He is, of course, can be small. And, he can to run and he can to swim. But, he is, someway, also, big. Someway. And grass for him – it is a whole forest. And field - it is a world. So, it is interesting look at the outdoors.

So, in this game, again, once again, there will be no enemies, that’s why, space button at the gameplay itself is not in use. Only two arrows – left and right. And duckling run automatically. Somewhere forward! After the funny joyful little sun! He runs forward! And theme, again, of a good and kind little animals, summer countryside positive, forest, field, little shallow river, little shallow water, stones.

So, it is everything, it is so bright. That’s why, it has such a visual decorations, visual look! All around is colorful. Few, only 16 colors. And, lots of these, at the every level. Levels has their own colorful solutions. Some levels are dark. Some levels are bright, Light day, sun. Dark level - it is or in shadows or when clouds at the sky. Before raining. So, it has full diversity, lots of variations for duckling.

Duckling is animated. He shakes with little wings. He moves his legs. And, all the time, he is on the run. Game is about good and kind animals. And positive.

Day 3 of Podcast Girls Week: Angst or Fluff. Pick your poison.

I.M.O.G.E.N. helping Hartro with important presentation as any AI definitely would

Hartro took a deep breath. She had to do a vey important presentation in front of Managers Committee and her preparations weren’t going as good as she wanted. Durek, one of her supervisors, told her recently that even though her 3D designs and creative drawn boards are very unique, it’s not necessarily what Managers Committee might want to see. So she decided to try and do simple digital presentation. Of course it wasn’t going as smoothly as she hoped and now she had barely started presentation and only few more hours to finish it.

“Everything is going to be alright.” She muttered to herself trying not to fall into despair.

She saw out of the corner of her eye her art supplies. Oh, she could see in her mind the colourful board she could make for this occasion. She could even use colour changing glitter she haven’t had chance to use yet.

“No. I will do this.” She stated firmly focusing on screen in front of her. Empty slide stared at her mockingly and she stared back at it with anger.

“Your order has arrived.” I.M.O.G.E.N. said suddenly and delivery tube opened with a quiet ping.

“I haven’t ordered anything.” Hartro said confused.

She walked to the delivery tube and took out a big package. She carefully opened the box worrying if Trexel didn’t finally decide to take revenge on her for restricting him from Cosmic Lounge. She found inside colourful markers, glue, tapes in different patterns (including one with little charts), feathers, Stellar Firma logo confetti and much more.

“I.M.O.G.E.N. I don’t remember ordering this.” She said looking further into the package and seeing more and more art supplies. “Also I thought I already used all my cards for- Oh my Board, is it limited edition Stellar Firma kit for making charts? Oh, I always dreamed about it.”

She picked up a small box and looked at it with complete adoration on her face.

“It will perfect for my presentation! The Committee has never seen a chart so perfect!”

Hartro moved towards her desk with new found energy. However her enthusiasm disappeared as soon as she saw screen of her computer.

“Ah, yes, no chart drawing for this one.” She could feel bitter taste of disappointment in her mouths.

She sat down on the chair with a heavy sigh and put chart making kit on the side.

“Employees of Stellar Firma are required to use ordered supplies in order to not waste company’s assets. Why are you not using them?” I.M.O.G.E.N. asked.

“First, I didn’t order them. And second, I have to make this presentation in digital format like everyone else.” Hartro sighed and send a longing look at art supplies.

“Managers Committee always complains how every presentation is exactly the same. It happens so often they actually created a game to check how many times they see the same thing. It is very entertaining to change their game and see if they notice anything. So far no one did.”

Hartro raised her head interested. Art supplies looked more and more tempting.

“But Durek said they won’t like colourful board.” She said with a hint of sadness in her voice.

“Durek got a lowest rate in his time. Twice. I would advise any aspiring Line Manager not to trust him about this presentation.”

Hartro looked at the screen and plain boring slides. Then she turned to chart making kit on her desk and box of art supplies. She could feel fresh motivation running through her. Her mind was bursting with new ideas incorporating new supplies.

“Okay, it’s time to do it Hartro style!” She exclaimed and left computer behind.

“Playing Hartro Straight To The Top Playlist.” I.M.O.G.E.N. spoke one last time and office was filled with sound of paper, markers, glitter and energetic music.

Final Unity project.

Fairly easy. Started with a blank scene, added a huge plane, put on a grass texture, added a car, which I found out through running the game functioned as a player character. I then decided that my game would be a top-down car thing.

So, I raised the camera and rotated it so that it pointed straight down at my car and my plane. From there I decided that my "ground" needed to look like a road, so I went to the asset store: https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/2d/textures-materials/roads/road-materials-137087

I downloaded some road textures and put one down on my plane. I noticed that the controls for the car were fairly difficult to use, and that this fact combined with the limitation of the fixed camera meant that I could make a game of directing the car to knock objects off-screen until none remained.

I downloaded a bunch of low-poly, road-themed props which I then began to place into my game. The presets I used came loaded with their own physics and everything so all I had to do was put down some objects for my car to knock off-camera. For some reason, all of the objects and the car were incredibly small at first, so I scaled them all up until I found them visible enough on-screen. The rubber pad objects had a tendency to send the car flying when approached from the wrong sides, so I decided to include them as sort of landmines which the player would have to avoid/remove carefully.

From there I felt it was time to customize the car, so I applied a grass texture from the standard-unity assets. It looked pretty badass. For some reason the car's sound scripts did not work, and I tried to get them working by looking at the right tab and seeing if there was anything wrong with them, but I couldn't tell. I followed up on that red error you're seeing at the bottom of the screen, and navigated to the problem file, but I couldn't figure out where to go from there and googling the error didn't get me any further answers. I tried just dragging and dropping the script onto the car, but that did not work either. I tried dragging the audio files onto the car, but that just made them all play once simultaneously on startup. So, I let the sound be.

I was trying to think of a way to spice up my creation further so I put down a couple palm trees just as an obstacle which could not be moved and had to be navigated around.

Looking at it, I thought it would be cool to assign a story to the odd scenario I had created, so I imagined that the grass had gained consciousness, brought the car to life parasite style, and organized with the palm trees to take back nature and fight what they saw as pollution.

Also, at some point I lost the rightmost menu, and I have no idea what caused this, but it quickly put a stop to any further experimentation.

So, I was ultimately able to design and build a basic videogame in unity. It runs full-screen and is playable in its current state. There's a video of Ty playing it above if you're interested. Personally, I had the most fun just coming up with a story to justify what was happening on-screen, even though there was no requirement on that front.

If I were to sell it, I'd call it "Grass Car". Buyers would line up, man.

CHAPTER 10 

“LEARN GAMBLING” 

“I can teach you myself since I gamble a lot.  

You don’t have to be great at gambling, you just have to learn. 

Okay... Let’s start with Slot Games because they are easy to understand,  

and unlike any other games, you will spend less time playing it.  

In this game you must create a line of matching symbols to win.

ISLA: I remember grandma, she still gambles and is almost always with her friends, like she prioritizes them over us, her family. 

GRAY: Just let her enjoy life. 

ISLA: I mean, even when she’s younger, mom said that grandma really has that side, a not-so-family-oriented. But when she needs help with her maintenance, it’s us, her family, she’s always asking for help, not her friends. But yeah, she’s still her mom. So, she couldn’t do anything but  still love and support her. 

GRAY: Yap. Family is family, no matter what. 

ISLA: But I hope Grandma will realize it.

GRAY: Let’s start. The major types of slot games that I’ll teach you are Classic slots, Video slots, Progressive slots, and 3D slots.  

ISLA: Mhmm!

Then the dish is now prepared.

ISLA: What’s your favorite Spanish dish? 

GRAY: This!

GRAY: How about you? 

ISLA: Vieiras en su concha, Cordero asado, Carrillada, and Rabo de Toro! 

GRAY: That’s a lot 

ISLA: Yeah. 

A few minutes after eating, Gray had abdominal pain. 

ISLA: That’s because you ate a lot 

GRAY: Maybe. You cook so well. 

ISLA: My pleasure. 

Other minutes have passed, and Gray is still hurting. 

GRAY: Did you wash the lobster well? 

ISLA: Yeah! 

GRAY: Have you added other ingredients? 

ISLA: Hmm. I just added black pepper. 

GRAY: Oh, no. I didn’t notice. 

ISLA: Why? 

GRAY: I’m allergic to black pepper 

ISLA: Oh, I’m sorry! 

GRAY: It’s fine. 

ISLA: Let me make it up to you tomorrow. Which other foods or ingredients are you allergic to? 

GRAY: Just black pepper. Tomorrow, let’s have Rabo de Toro, one of your favorites. 

ISLA: Yey!

After eating breakfast, we go straight to Casino Millionario. 

“This time, I’ll be teaching you the Table Games. Some table games that involve cards are Baccarat, Blackjack, Teen Patti, Three Card Poker, Four Card Poker, and Red Dog. 

Let’s start with the Baccarat. It is a card game between the player and the banker. The objective is to bet on the winner between the two hands, which are the banker’s hand and the player’s hand.” 

“Let me try...” 

“Then here’s Blackjack. It is a casino game played using a deck of cards against the dealer. In this game, you will draw cards with a value close to 21 but not exceeding it.”

“Let’s proceed to Teen Patti. It is an Indian-origin card game. The objective is to have the best three-card hand or to be the last player left in the round.

“Yeah. I made it!” 

“Then here’s the Three card poker. It is a card game played against a dealer. In here, each player competes with the dealer rather than rivals.”

“Four card poker is like Three card poker. This game allows players to place a bet three times their Ante or mandatory bet.”

“Last, Red Dog. It is a casino game that involves three to eight players. In here, players place bets on whether the rank of their third card would fall within the first two placed cards.”

“And we’re done. Let’s continue tomorrow after your work.”

After work, we ate dinner and went straight to Casino Millionario... 

“This time, I’ll teach the Specialty Games, which I am sure will be easy for you. Specialty Games are just the Bingo, Keno, and Wheel of Fortune.” 

Then we both just laughed. 

“I knew you would be tired after work, so you’ll play the easy ones today.” 

“You know how to be timing ha.” I replied. 

“Aside from the fact that they are just easy to play. These games are solely based on luck, which you obviously have... Let’s go?” 

“Let’s go!” 

“First, Bingo. It is a casino game where numbers are called out randomly from mechanical or electronic number generators. The objective of the game is to cover a specific pattern of numbers before anyone else.” 

“Let me play...” 

“Go, Isla!” 

“Bingo!” 

“Yey!” 

 

“Second, Keno. This is like a lottery. It is a game where you must choose numbers ranging from 1 to 10 from the given table of numbers ranging from 1 to 80. Then, the numbers are drawn by the casino, and the payout you’ll receive will be based on the correct match with your card.” 

“Let me try” 

“I got matches!” 

“You really are so lucky!” 

“Last, Wheel of Fortune. It is a casino game where contestants simply spin the wheel until they achieve three spins on the pay line. Alright, let’s wait for the others.” 

“Here we go!” 

“Go, Isla!”

“Hey, mom!”

Wtf? He didn’t even tell me that his mom would come. 

So, I suddenly turned off the gas stove. 

And I hid in the cabinet in my room. I was in a rush, so I didn’t close the door.  

So, I’m listening to their conversations.

“Oh, you’re cooking, ha!” Gray’s mom said. 

“Ahhh. Hmm. Yeah!” Gray replied. 

“Just wait in the living room, I’ll call you when it’s done.” Gray added.

Then Gray entered my room... 

GRAY: Hey! I didn’t know mom was coming.  

ISLA: Why did you tell her where you’re living? 

GRAY: Of course, she’s my mom. Hello? 

ISLA: How about now? 

GRAY: I don’t know how to cook that... Let me just introduce you. 

ISLA: You can see the instructions on the internet! 

GRAY: That will take more time! 

ISLA:  You’re the owner of a resto bar, but you can’t cook? 

GRAY: I can cook but... just the basics. Besides, I’m not the chef, I’m the owner. Get out of there! 

ISLA: I don’t want to. Can you see how I look right now? 

GRAY: Well, you can fix yourself in three minutes. 

ISLA: But... 

GRAY: Just do it! Don’t be shy! I’ll wait for you outside. 

Then Gray suddenly went to his mom. I have no choice but to get ready. 

GRAY: Mom, I’m living with someone since last month. 

MOM: Ha? Who? 

GRAY:  My girlfriend. 

MOM: Oh. You’re not telling me. Where is she? 

GRAY:  In her room, just fixing herself. She’s the one cooking.. ha-ha.. not me. 

MOM:  Oh. 

Then they just laughed. 

“Isla!” Gray said. 

“Coming!” I replied.

MOM: How old are you? 

ISLA: 25, mom 

MOM: Where are you working? 

ISLA: Hmm. At ZTN Corporación. 

MOM: I’m familiar with that. Is that located here in Castellón? 

ISLA: Yes, mom. 

MOM: What’s your position there? 

ISLA: Financial analyst. 

MOM: That’s why you’re also living here, Gray? 

GRAY: Ahm. Yeah. 

MOM: So... Let’s continue cooking your Rabo de toro? 

ISLA: Oh, right. 

Then, we had lots of talks ~ 

“Fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree” is just so real XD

And then we ate, and yeah, they liked my dish.  

His mom praised me for that, and then she went home.

On the next few days, I just repeated playing the casino games until I have finally learned enough about it. 

After this, we ate a lot of street foods, then Gray asked me... 

“Wanna have some drinks?” 

“Of course!”

“LEARN BALLROOM DANCING” 

[MAY 2014] 

“What are you doing? We should be playing chess.” Gray said. 

“I’m finding a good tutor online near our place.” I answered. 

“What tutor?” 

“A ballroom dancing tutor.” 

“How did you know?” 

“Well, you got drunk last night, and you told me the third ordinance.” 

“Did I say that?” 

“I actually asked you.” 

“Oh. You’re a cheater ha. You took advantage of me.” 

“If I’m a cheater, then what do you call yourself? Sounds familiar?” 

“Are you sure you want to start learning ballroom dancing?” 

“Yap!” 

Then here I found an expert ballroom dancer, Miss Vergara. 

GRAY: Hey! You insisted on learning ballroom dancing. You must lose weight. Reduce eating meat and sweets starting today. 

ISLA: That will be hard. I'll eat meat and sweets once a week. 

GRAY: Just make sure to stick to 1000 calories per day and avoid meats that are hard to digest. 

ISLA: Sure. 

Every day after work and on weekends, I practice ballroom dancing.  

It’s not a joke. It’s hard. 

My body has been in pain and adjusting for a couple of days. 

I feel like Miss Vergara is getting annoyed since it takes me more time to do the dance steps. But yeah, at least I’m still trying and getting better each day.

A time came when I felt so stressed, too occupied, and couldn’t focus on work.  

So, I must admit that I wasn’t able to perform well on a specific project for the Company. This could be solved in a more formal way, but they’ve become so loud about it.  

I saw two possible reasons for their excessive reactions,  

either they only felt disappointed in my performance,  

or they just feel satisfied, dragging me down.  

But I guess, both are reasons, though the latter seems to be a more convincing reason. 

Then... 

the hidden haters started to come out.  

And guess what??? 

They are all the ones who don't have the looks.  

Deyyyymmmmm!  

They even recruited others to treat me a bit differently. 

Whenever I greet some of them, they are no longer greeting back simply to make me feel like an outcast.  

What a fabulous team effort! 

It’s like they only used that one failure of mine as a chance to express their hidden feelings against me XD  

Well, it's a reflection of their character, not mine. ~ 

And I know very well where that unreasonable hate is coming from. 

What’s funnier was that they even recruited haters from another department whose faces were really unfamiliar to me XD  

I guess, in the afterlife, I won't go to hell for being real.  

But as a matter of fact, the haters seem to come from the bloodlines of bulldogs, gorillas, dwarfs, wild boars, and walking skeletons with bad skin tones and inappropriate body proportions.  

I wonder how exactly they feel whenever they see themselves in the mirror XD 

Well, they didn’t get any prettier for doing such a thing to me. ~ 

So, I didn’t think of getting back at them since their looks are already an everyday curse to them. XD 

Instead of taking revenge, I just empathized with them. XD 

It’s really like...  

When the man from Above showered good genes, they were literally sleeping so deeply like they hadn't slept for two straight days.  

Even the best plastic surgeons will give up fixing their faces. 

People judge me like they know me well.  

If and only if I could focus, I could have done better.  

But that’s life, full of immature, judgmental, and narrow-minded animals.  

It's so funny how they thought they were winning by making the environment uncomfortable to me without them even realizing that they are with someone who's been through hell (and really immune to betrayals XD). 

So, I didn’t allow them to become a hindrance to our plans.  

Who are they anyway?  

I don’t even know their whole names.  

Like f*ck?  

Who are these mammals?  

Or, should I say, reptiles? XD  

They even targeted my dating status, like it's just so funny to know that they haven't experienced any.

What’s worse is that they don't have any suitors, not even the poor and ugly ones.

“Ohhhhh. I’m afraid of heights.” 

“You have no choice but to learn.”

“Let’s join the Tomato Fight Festival this coming Wednesday.”

A problem came... 

The sales of Gray’s Resto Bar have been constantly decreasing by 25%-30% these past few months due to a newly built resto bar near his. 

ISLA: What should we do now? 

GRAY: This is the first time that the sales have constantly decreased to such an extent. We must think of another technique...  What if we try offering new foods and drinks? 

ISLA: Yap. Hmm. You can also ask your staff to wear elegant clothes to make them look more formal. Consider having a stronger online presence. And don’t you dare decrease the price of the drinks and meals you’re already offering. That will make them think you’re losing. Just add new offers. 

GRAY: Alright.

Sixteen year old Jaehyun ran so that present day Jaehyun could walk. If present day Jaehyun told sixteen year old Jaehyun what his life would be in the future, little Jaehyun would never believe him. Even until this day, he still can’t believe it.

Seoul’s finest 30 under 30. The country’s youngest billionaire. 2019′s richest bachelor. Jaehyun is all of those things and he worked hard for them. Those things didn’t come to him on a gold plate nor was it fed to him with a gold spoon. They came to him as products of his hard work.

His eyes flutter open at the sound of the pilot’s voice, announcing that the private jet will be landing soon. As he gets up, he rubs his eyes and opens the blinds to look out the window. The skies are a bright blue on this lovely morning, he thinks to himself. He overlooks the city of Seoul and lets out a groan. Just the sight of office and corporate buildings make him wish his vacation was a bit longer.

“I know, I miss Singapore too.” He glances to his right to see Johnny waking up from his nap. He chuckles, chucking his neck pillow straight into his face. Johnny blocks the attack right on time.

“Do we really have a choice?” Jaehyun sighs. “We have to go back to our busy lives and build a bigger empire.”

“You make it seem like you’re the king of a huge city.” Johnny rolls his eyes. “Please don’t ever say that again. It doesn’t make you look cool. It doesn’t make us look cool.”

“You know what’s cool?” Jaehyun quirks an eyebrow at Johnny. He points at a huge building in the middle of the city. Surrounding the huge building are small company buildings, entertainment companies, law firms, etc. Johnny looks out the window and spots what his best friend is pointing at. “We own that.”

“No,” Johnny shakes his head. “You own that.”

BREAKING NEWS: Jung Jaehyun tops richest bachelor for a third consecutive year.

“Wow. You’re telling me that he’s your childhood friend?”

You and your roommate, Mark, are sitting in front of the TV. You’re both huddled around the coffee table, eating breakfast together. As you’re shoving a mouthful of cereal into your mouth, you nod your head. “Don’t believe me?”

“Pictures or it didn’t happen,” Mark squints his eyes at you suspiciously. 

You dust your hands off and get up from the floor. As you walk into your room, you rummage through your closet to take out a memory box covered in dust. You blow the dust off the lid of the box and erupt into soft coughs. Mark watches you as you come back into the living room with a box.

“Where’s the receipts?” Mark asks.

“Someone’s impatient.” You mumble.

As you’re looking through your memory box, you can hear the reporter speak more about Jung Jaehyun. You finally find the graduation book and pull it out before handing it to Mark.

“Page eighty-seven, fourth row, second picture on the right.” 

You fold your arms and quirk an eyebrow. Mark’s eyes scan through the page and once he finds it, he looks back at the TV screen. His eyebrows raise.

“So you weren’t lying to me,” Mark says with an astonished look on his face. “Damn, you must secure the bag, then. The guy’s hella rich, he could pay off our student debts combined.”

“I just hope he remembers me,” you rest your chin against the palm of your hand. “He went to college abroad. He came back home rich. He moved out of our neighbourhood. The chances of him remembering me get slimmer and slimmer.”

“I’m pretty sure he remembers you. He should remember you. You’re a part of his childhood. You both graduated elementary and high school together.” Mark tries to convince you. He shoves another mouthful of cereal into his mouth.

“Do you think he would remember me? Me? When I look like this?” You ask, pointing at yourself. 

“You kind of have a point.” He shrugs his shoulders. “You lost your sense of fashion ever since you started university.”

Mark yelps in pain when your spoon hits him in the arm. You glare at him as if he had earned himself a death wish. He rubs the spot, glaring back at you. You pout, breaking your gaze from Mark to stare at Jaehyun’s picture on your TV screen.

Jung Jaehyun is your childhood friend. The two of you lived in the same neighbourhood, went to the same elementary school, and graduated from the same high school. He’s not what he is like now. The Jaehyun you met and befriended was a quiet boy who barely had any friends. He had two friends, you and Johnny. He loved to play the piano and if you were lucky enough, you would hear him sing or hum a soft melody. He had a dream of becoming an architect, someone who drew buildings and watch them come to life. The Jaehyun you met and befriended was always picked on. He was mainly picked on for two things: for being too quiet and for being the chubby one. You and Johnny were the only ones that defended him from the bullies. 

The Jaehyun you see on your TV screen is far from the Jaehyun you met. You never saw him or Johnny ever since your high school graduation. You’d often wonder if he’s doing alright, if he’s making friends, if he’s pursuing his future of being an architect. But once he came back to Seoul after studying abroad, all of your wishes for him were answered. Jaehyun is doing alright and he’s pursuing his future, he runs and owns a successful architecture company. He’s making friends, in fact, everyone wants to be friends with him. Sometimes, it makes you doubt that he’ll ever remember you.

You doubt that he’ll ever remember his childhood friend who grew up with him, who defended him from the bullies, who stuck with him no matter who he was. 

“I guess we’ll just have to find out on your first day at work,” Mark says as he brings up the bowl of cereal-flavoured milk to his lips. He gulps down the milk and sets down the empty bowl back onto the coffee table. “We’ll have to find out whether he remembers you or not.”

“This is all you guys prepared?”

Everyone seated in the meeting room gawk at Jaehyun. He sighs, folding his arms and takes one last look at the PowerPoint presentation. The project manager nervously fiddles with his fingers before nodding his head in reply.

Jaehyun gets up from his seat and walks towards the front of the room. He points at the 3D plan of a building. The building looks poorly made, almost as if it was done last minute. “How long did it take for you to do this?”

“Well―”

“You don’t need to answer my question because I can see it.” He cuts him off. “Just from how it looks, from how the lines are crooked, I know this took you less than half an hour.”

“Sir―”

“I was gone on vacation for two weeks. Even though I was gone on vacation for two weeks, I still did work during my downtime. What did you all do during those two weeks? Did you all have a good time?” Jaehyun shakes his head in disbelief. “I expected you to do a good job with this project. But after I go on vacation for two weeks, you all suddenly get lazy?”

“We tried our best, sir.” The project manager mutters softly and Jaehyun’s head snaps in his direction. 

He raises an eyebrow and scoffs. “You tried your best? Sure, let’s say you tried your best. But your best wasn’t good enough.”

Everyone falls silent in the meeting room. They have guilt written all over their faces. 

“Let me remind you that you’re working at Jung Architects,” he tells them. “I hate looking at poorly made projects because they don’t reflect our company values. We build and create buildings and structures to the best of our ability. They have to be functional and safe. They have to be perfect. They have to be economical.”

“We’ll try again, sir.” The project manager mumbles. “Sorry, sir.”

“You don’t need to apologize to me.” He sighs. “You have to apologize to all of your coworkers in this room for wasting their time.”

“Sir―”

“The new interns and engineers are coming in tomorrow.” Jaehyun announces and everyone’s eyebrows raise in surprise.

“T-Tomorrow? Since when did we hire new employees―”

“Don’t be surprised if you lose your jobs because of them. The moment I find them more competent than this?” Jaehyun gestures to the presentation. He chucks the folder away from his hands. “I’ll be firing you from the company.”

They all bow their heads. Jaehyun grabs his coat and exits the meeting room, making sure that he slams the door shut. The moment he’s out of the room, everyone erupts into whispered complaints about how rude their boss was, if he woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, or if someone spoiled his daily coffee.

Ever since you started to hate working at your previous job, it drove you to start searching and applying for other jobs. It was just a huge coincidence that Jung Architects was looking for a structural engineer. 

For most of your life, you’ve dreamed of becoming an engineer. It didn’t matter what kind of engineer, you just wanted to be one. It was either an engineer or a mathematician ― it was your last resort only if your dreams of being an engineer were crushed. You have a gift in math. And so when you got accepted into a structural engineering program, it was all just meant to be.

Getting hired as a structural engineer at Jung Architects made your dreams even more real. It just seems too good to be true. But here you are.

Here you are, sitting in front of your laptop, deleting all the emails you’ve gotten from other companies and jobs. You didn’t need to respond to them anymore. Deleting them felt theurapeutic.

Just as you’re deleting your emails, you stumble across an email you’ve sent to Jaehyun a couple of years ago. You laugh in disbelief. Did you really keep an old email in your inbox? Why? You click on it anyway.

You clench your tummy as you burst out into laughter. You vividly remember typing this email out while bawling your eyes out. On the day that Jaehyun flew out for university, you didn’t give him a proper goodbye because Johnny was crying like a whale swimming in the ocean. After that day, you and Johnny kept in touch. But that didn’t last long until Johnny found himself new friends. Ever since you sent that email, you sent him another email every now and then. But you never got a reply.

You sigh. That was the start of your separation from the two of them.

Just as you’re about to delete the email, you see a new email in the thread. The email is dated today and was sent a couple of hours ago. You quirk an eyebrow, adjusting your glasses to get a better look at the email. You click on it and your mouth falls open in shock.

It’s an email from Jaehyun.

“It comes in rose gold, gold, and sterling silver.”

Jaehyun picks up each necklace and analyzes them carefully. The jeweler waits for his decision, but he’s not sure if he could hardly wait anymore. Jaehyun has been looking around the jewelry shop for heaven knows how long. It’s getting quite dark outside and the shop is nearing it’s closure for the remainder of the day. Before the jeweler could let out a sigh, Jaehyun places down the silver necklace and points at the gold one.

“I’ll take the gold one, please.” He smiles.

He steps out of the shop with a new purchase and heads home. Once he arrives home, he goes straight to his home office. He plops down onto the chair and places the jewelry box onto the table. He glances at his computer and decides to check his email before heading to bed.

He clicks on his inbox and the smile on his face gets wider when he sees two new emails. One of them is from a client. The other... well, the other email comes from someone special.

Steve picked up on my breathing and began rubbing my back. “It’s okay B. Slower breaths.” 

I nodded. “Yeah… I’m trying.”

“What did he say to you?” Steve asked. “And what did he me—“

“I don’t know…” I shook my head. “We can talk about it later,” I whispered. “We need to figure out what just happened.”

Thor quickly flew out of the broken windows. I had no idea where he was headed or why he was leaving. The rest of us went to the lab where Tony and Bruce were already looking at screens, searching for something. We stood there is silence for a bit. I looked around and noticed that the scepter was missing. I hadn’t even noticed that a suit had gotten away with it. That’s where Thor went. Tony leaned over a table, looking at a destroyed Iron Legion suit. I still wasn’t breathing regularly and my head was pounding so I quickly found a chair to sit in.

“All our work is gone.” Bruce stated. “Ultron cleared out, used the internet as an escape hatch.”

“Ultron.” Steve whispered. He was mad.

“He’s been in everything. Files, surveillance.” Nat stated. “Probably knows more about us than we know about each other.”

“He’s in your files, he’s in the internet.” Rhodey started. “What if he decides to access something a little more exciting?"

“Nuclear codes,” Maria said.

“Nuclear codes. Look, we need to make some calls, assuming we still can.” 

“Nukes?” Nat questioned. “He said he wanted us dead.”

“He didn’t say dead.” Steve said. “He said extinct.”

“He also said he killed somebody.” Clint piped in.

“There wasn’t anyone else in the building.” Maria commented.

“Yes there was,” Tony said, walking to the center of the room. He used his phone to pull up a 3D image of JARVIS’ consciousness. It was completely destroyed.

“Oh my gosh,” I whispered in shock. 

“This is insane.” Bruce stated.

“JARVIS was the first line of defense,” Steve said.

“He would’ve shut Ultron down, it makes sense.” I stated.

“No, Ultron could’ve assimilated JARVIS,” Bruce said. “This isn’t strategy, this is… rage.”

Loud foot steps entered the lab. Thor was back and he was angry. Well, angry might not be enough to describe his emotion. He was less angry more furious. He walked straight towards Tony, grabbed him by his throat, and held him up. 

“Thor!” I yelled. I stood up, getting defensive but quickly realized that I was no match for the god.

“Woah, woah, woah,” Clint said. “It’s going around.”

“Come on,” Tony strangled out. “Use… your words… buddy.” 

“I have more than enough words to describe you, Stark.” Thor replied.

“Thor!” Steve interrupted. “The Legionnaire.” 

Thor looked over at me. He saw the worry in my eyes and aggressively let go of Tony. Tony stumbled back and I quickly walked over and helped steady him. 

“Trail went cold about a hundred miles out but it’s headed north,” Thor said, pointing north. “And it has the scepter. Now we have to retrieve it, again.”

“The genie’s out of that bottle. Clear and present is Ultron.” Natasha says.

“I don’t understand.” Helen Cho broke her silence. I had honestly forgotten that she was even here. “You built this program. Why is it trying to kill us?” 

Tony started laughing. Like actually laughing. How could he think that any of this was funny? Bruce and I quickly looked at each other and then he made eye contact with Tony. Bruce shook his head at Tony, trying to get him to stop.

“You think this is funny?” Thor scolded, not so pleased with Tony’s laughter.

“No. It’s probably not,” Tony chuckled, trying to subdue his laughter. “Right? Is this very terrible?” He continued laughing a little. “Is it so.. is it so… it is.” Tony looked at me as I just shook my head. “It’s so terrible.”

“This could’ve been avoided if you hadn’t played with something you don’t understand.”

“No! I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” Tony begins as he walks towards Thor, his anger now showing through. “It is funny. It’s a hoot that you don’t get why we need this.”

“Tony,” Bruce kinda sung. “Maybe this might not be the time to—“

“Really?” Tony quickly turned around to Bruce. “That’s it? You just roll over, show your belly, every time somebody snarls?”

“Only when I’ve created a murder bot.” Bruce quickly said.

“We didn’t. We weren’t even close. Were we close to an interface?”

Bruce nodded and shrugged as I broke in, “Well apparently you were, Dad! And you did it right here! What were you thinking?”

“The Avengers were supposed to be different than SHIELD.” Steve stated.

“Anybody remember when I carried a nuke through a wormhole?” Tony asked pointing up to the ceiling.

“No, it’s never come up.” Rhodey responded.

“Saved New York?” Tony questioned.

“Never heard of it.” I said, rolling my eyes. 

Of course I had heard of it! It’s not like he mentions it all the time, especially because of the panic attacks, but he does mention it more than he should. It drives me crazy! When he mentions it to me, it’s usually to try to show that he’s cooler than me or cooler than others. It’s usually when we’re joking around. Sometimes I think it’s funny, but I don’t a lot of the time. I think he thinks I think it’s funny, but I can tell he’s using it at a cover. He’s trying to hide how he really feels. If I was him, I would still be haunted by it. And I feel like he still is, he just plays it off like it’s no big deal. I’m still haunted by it. Still terrified. 

It was all over the news. I was watching tv at my foster family’s house in California when it happened. When the aliens started coming through the portal. All the cameras in New York were filming it. All the tv channels were showing it. I watched on the edge of the couch with wide eyes. I saw the nuke headed for New York then Iron Man get under it and head towards the portal. I knew what he was doing. I screamed and fell to my knees on the floor. My foster parents knew about my relationship with Tony. Tony made sure to find a family that was okay with him taking me every so often. My foster parents ran into the room after hearing me scream. They looked at me and then back to the tv. I screamed again once Tony went through the portal. I brought my knees to my chest, wrapped my arms around them, and started rocking back and forth. I cried and cried into my knees. I felt a hand suddenly on my shoulder and my name being called. I looked up at the tv to see Iron Man falling from the closed portal and the Hulk catching him. 

I was worried sick for a week after that, not eating properly and barely even speaking. I waited and waited for a phone call or a visit. Anything for me just to know that he was okay. I was home alone when I heard a knock at the door. I carefully opened it. There Tony was. Alive. He had sunglasses on and a tee shirt under his suit coat. I quickly wrapped my arms around him and cried into his neck. He allowed me to. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close. So yeah, I have heard about him carrying a nuke through a wormhole. I saw it with my own eyes.

“Recall that?” Tony asked again, pulling me from my memory. “A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. We’re standing three hundred feet below it. We’re the Avengers. We can bust arms dealers all the live long day, but, that up there?” Tony pointed up again. “That’s… that’s the end game. How were you guys planning on beating that?” 

“Together,” Steve quickly stepped up and answered. 

Tony took a few steps towards Steve. “We’ll lose,” Tony replied.

“Then we’ll do that together too.” Steve responded. Tony looked away from Steve and looked sadly at me.

 “Thor’s right,” Steve continued. “Ultron’s calling us out. And I’d like to find him before he’s ready for us. The world’s a big place. Let’s start making it smaller.”

I looked over at Tony. He was leaning over a table. I could tell that he was blaming himself for everything that had happened tonight. He did have a right to, but I still didn’t enjoy seeing him hate himself. Everyone else started getting cleaned up and looking for Ultron. I took the few steps over to him and gently set my hand on Tony’s back.

“Dad?” I quietly called.

“You shouldn’t be here…” He whispered. “You should go to bed. Or I should send you to Pepper.”

“I can help.”

“No… maybe in the morning. You need to get some rest after what happened tonight.” He turned around and placed a hand on my cheek. “Please? Do this for me.” I slowly nodded as I place one of my hands over his. “That’s my girl.” He gently pulled my head into his chest and kissed the top of it. I wrapped my arms around him. “I’ll be here if you need anything.”

“Okay.” I whispered into his chest.

“Are you okay? It really scared me when he had a hold of you like that tonight.”

“I’m okay. I promise.” I slowly let go and pulled away. “I’m here if you need anything too, okay?” He nodded. “I love you, Dad.”

“Love you too, kiddo.”

「 dsco class | uv unwrapping tips 」

— First disclaimer! I am in no way a pro at meshing or UV unwrapping, I honestly guessed my way through with this by looking at textures from EA and other creators, and played around Blender to really understand how I do my unwrapping.

But what is UV unwrapping? In Blender’s definition, it is the 3D modelling process of projecting a 2D image to a 3D model’s surface for texture mapping. Simply put, unwrapping is what I would call turning 3D mesh into 2D so that one can put any texture, pattern, color, etc. they’d like onto their mesh.

I am going to list down my favorite unwrapping methods, and how I would go about unwrapping them. Keep in mind that I do not use only one type per mesh. I may mix two or three types to create the perfect map that will make my texturing most convenient to edit.

Project From View

I like to use this mapping type for FLAT SURFACES. For example, I used PFV for the iPad screen, the sticky tabs from my Kiko set, or the Moon Juice box’s sides from my Coco Pantry set.

Tip: I usually mark the edges (or sides) of the flat surface as seams. I then align my view, either view the flat surface from the top (if the surface is facing up), or front/back/left/right (if the surface is facing one of those sides), then I select the faces within said edges, and press ‘U’ to open the mapping types, and click Project From View.

Cylinder Projection

I like to use this mapping type for CYLINDRICAL MESHES. It doesn’t have to be perfect cylinder honestly, I have unwrapped meshes of cylinders that have hourglass shapes or any other curved cylinders. I mark one length of the cylinder as the seam, as shown below. If you are confused what the seam does, it is basically where the pattern will end, so as much as possible, use SEAMLESS textures if you want a mesh with no obvious seams. I also delete the faces of the ends that don’t show in general, like if the tips of the cylinder were hidden in another mesh (like let’s say the upper tip of a table leg, I’ll delete the face because it’s hidden in the surface of the table anyway). If the faces are shown however, I would just mark the edges of the circular face as a seam. This will separate the face from the body, and will enable the cylindrical body be unmeshed in a straight to semi-straight line.

And finally, the original: Unwrap.

I, myself, still get confused on unwrapping with this type. And that’s why I first unwrap faces that are quite easy to unwrap, like the Project From View and Cylinder Projection I wrote about above. When unwrapping, you will want to make sure that seams I mark will be on the edges where I feel like people wouldn’t notice much, like for example: the bottom side or the left corner at the back of a box, or the inner corners of the legs of a table, and so on and so forth. Doing so, this will create a smooth 2D surface of the 3D model for you to put your 2D texture onto through Photoshop or maybe even Blender itself.

My final tip is to resize, rotate, and move all the faces according to what you are comfortable with! I usually make the faces that merely have solid colors as textures pretty small, and faces with textures or text on them pretty big. It doesn’t hurt to rotate pieces to make them all fit like a puzzle piece. Just keep practicing with unwrapping, and feel free to pm or email me at dee@dscombobulate.com.

THOUGHTS ABOUT MY WORK 03-03-2021

My main goals in my last update were to keep on attending workshops and artist talks and step up my video work by incorporating sound and learning how to use more advanced software - and I am happy to say that I think I’ve been keeping up with these goals pretty well!

So far, I have enjoyed working with mediums such as videography, photography, projection, and digital image manipulation. A lot of what I have done has been mostly experimental, nothing that I would define as "finished works" by any means for there is a lot of room for development in everything I have explored. However, pieces such as Incoherence + Nonsense and my photography series A State Between States are a little more polished and are the result of honing in on and combining some of the more experimental work I have done prior.

I have continued to explore my relationship with home, using my room as a headquarters for my practice and pushing the limits of what I can do in such a limited space with limited materials, building on my own emotions to activate a space. In my work, there is still the running theme of transition and liminality, which is something I am really pleased that people are picking up on when I show them my work without me having to explain that this was the intention. Some other feedback I have gotten from my peers is that my work reminds them of occult themes or of faded dreams or memories, which are both really interesting readings of the work and definitely things I am interested in looking into and perhaps intentionally incorporating.

On the topic of expanding thematically, I have noticed that there has been a natural evolution in my work that has caused me to present myself as an otherworldly creature, such as a ghost or spirit stuck between realms, haunting my environment. I think this may be a result of my wavering, but slowly growing, confidence in showing my own body in my work which causes me to blur or obscure myself from the viewer like I am only half there. I am really interested in the idea of me playing a ghost-like character in my work that is more of an extension of myself rather than a straight portrayal of myself. In the past, I have been very uncomfortable videoing or photographing myself but it is something I am learning to get more confident with, inspired by great artists such as Shana Moulton and Francesca Woodman whose work, though vastly different in delivery, both involve the artist’s body.

I have stepped up my video art by taking some workshops going over the basics of using Adobe After Effects. Having access to more advanced software has really opened up a broader range of paths I can go down in terms of video and installation work. Pieces such as Incoherence + Nonsense could not have been possible if I didn’t do any exploring in this program so I’m really glad that I took a bit of time to learn how to use it. I have only scratched the surface of how elements such as motion graphics and green screens can be used in my art work, but I definitely see it having a big part in my artistic process in the future.

Also on the topic of learning new software, I have continued doing workshops with the EMS department on topics such as augmented reality, virtual reality, 3D printing, and 3D scanning. I am finding these sessions super interesting and I have been experimenting a bit with using basic apps to do 3D scans of objects in my room. I am still in the process of figuring out how to implement these things into my practice, but at the moment I am okay with just attending the workshops and learning all that I can about this new media - I am thinking that these sorts of techniques will be easier to implement into my practice when I am back on campus and able to get access to more equipment and guidance.

I have been really enjoying the work I have been creating, yet I am inclined to shake things up a bit and to see what new ideas can arise. I am considering expanding the mediums of working and seeing how painting, collage, or sculpture can incorporate themselves into my artistic practice and if I can relate these things to what I have been doing with photography and video. On one hand, I am thinking that such work should be left to explore within my reconsidering drawing module, for I already have a lot of avenues I can go down with digital work. Yet I don't think having a go at different things can harm my work and I think it would be really interesting to see how the themes I have been working within translate into more tactile mediums.

This is not to say that I don't want to do more photography/video experiments going on the side of my new experiments, because I have a lot of ideas in my head that I want to try out. I’m the kind of person that likes to have a few different things on the go at once so it would be good for me to bring some new ways of working into the mix as well as build upon things I have already done. I have got into the habit of drawing in my sketchbook regularly. Sketching is a really useful way for me to get my ideas down on paper before I forget about them. I might not have time to explore each idea at the time but it is useful to have a collection of scribbles to go back to for inspiration when I get stuck with what to do next. I’m not the best at drawing but perhaps these sketches could transform into a work of their own somehow.

At the moment, I don’t have any ideas for a final piece in mind for this project - I am just following what my intuition is telling me and playing around with all of these smaller ideas I have going on in my head. I think further down the line an installation like those by multimedia artist Laure Provost would be interesting where I display lots of different pieces in the same space as a multimedia/multi sensory experience. However, at this point in time, I’m still in the experimental phase of my project.

However, for the time being, my main goal is to keep exploring new mediums and push myself out of my photography/video comfort zone. Not to say that I am not going to continue to develop the work I have been doing, I just want to expand my practice even further and get more experimental. Let's see how it goes!

Tips to Taking Pics in Red Dead!

Since it's release, I've always admired the photos that have been posted by other players and could only hope to be able to capture such great moments on my own and after not finding very much in the way of a list of useful tips for getting better pics, I've decided to create one of my own!

Part One - Settings

There are two main ways of taking pics in-game: Via the in-game camera or studio or through the screenshot feature.

Of these, the harder is by far taking screenshots using the Share button on the controller.

Challenges such as on-screen HUD items detracting from the shot or the camera moving too quickly or quirkily make taking good photos this way a bit more difficult. Unless you change some settings beforehand, this can prove a challenge indeed!

In my opinion, probably the most annoying thing is when you have a great shot, but the mini-map and other HUD elements are still visible.

There are two ways of preventing this.

For quick snapshots, (where you don't have a lot of time to fiddle with the settings) you'll want to simply hide the mini-map by holding Down on the DPad and then pressing Circle and also equipping nothing in your hand. This will remove the majority of the offending elements.

For better photos, however, you'll need to make some adjustments to your in-game settings. You'll also need to remember to undo these settings when you're done taking pics, as they will hinder you if you're doing anything other than taking photos! (Unless you normally play with a slow moving camera and no on-screen information!)

Because the R* powers-that-be have not seen fit to offer us any way of saving sets of settings that can be switched between quickly and since these settings will be a huge liability when warring, you may want to enable defensive mode while being a shutterbug to help prevent impromptu wars from breaking out!

Here are the settings that I advise changing (and the reasoning behind changing them, where applicable):

1. Start > Settings > Display (These settings control what is shown on the screen as far as information.)

A. Under "HUD" > Hud Preset

i. Set this to "Off" to remove all HUD elements from the screen

2. Start > Settings > Camera (These settings control the auto-leveling of the camera and whether or not First Person can be used in certain situations)

A. Under "Third Person" > Camera Follow Level

i. This setting controls how quickly the camera will reposition itself behind the player

a. If you want to be able to swing the camera perpendicular to you (especially when mounted) for side-view pics, you'll want to set this to "Off"

3. Start > Settings > Controls (These settings control how fast the camera moves, how your horse responds to directions when mounted and also the amount of input needed to make the camera start moving)

A. Under "Third Person" > Horse Control

i. This setting controls how the horse responds to input, whether it turns based on the horse or whether it turns based on the current camera angle.

a. "Horse Relative" makes it so your horse turns based on it's own position. Pushing left on the stick causes the horse to turn to it's left

i. If you want your horse to continue in a straight line while moving the camera, this is the setting you want

ii. If you want to be able to control your horse (without having a waypoint set) in Cinematic, this is the setting you want

b. "Camera Relative" makes your horse turn based on the current camera position. If the camera is facing forward and you push the stick to the left, the horse will only turn left as long as the camera faces front.

i. If you also have Camera Follow Level set to off and do not adjust it's position while in motion, your horse will turn 90° to the left and continue straight on from that point

B. Under both "Third Person" and "First P:erson" > Look Sensitivity & Aim Sensitivity

i. These settings control how sensitive the camera is to input from the stick is when looking or aiming (down the sights / through the scope)

ii. The higher this is set, the more sensitive the controls are!

C. Under both "Third Person" and "First Person" > Aim / Look Acceleration

i. These is how fast the Aim and Look goes from 0 to 100…

ii. Lower settings make the movement of the camera from a dead stop to full speed much slower. By lowering this you'll be able to finesse the camera into position a little better

D. Under both "Third Person" and "First Person" > Aim / Look Dead Zone

i. These control how much play there is in the stick before the camera begins to move

ii. The higher the setting the more you'll need to move the stick before camera movement starts

For me, when I'm playing normally, I have these set as follows:

1A) Set to Custom with almost all elements showing

2A) Set to "Off" or

3A) Set to "Horse Relative"

3B) Set to Full Bar for both

3C) Set to Full Bar for both

3D) Set to No Bar

When on a photo-takin' kick, I set these to:

1A) Set to "Off"

2A) Set to "Off" or

3A) Set to "Horse Relative"

3B) Set to One Quarter to One Half a bar for both

3C) Set to One Quarter bar for both

3D) Set to No Bar

Character Review of HTTYD 3

This is Part 1 of a two part movie review of How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Next up is the plot review. 

As of March 3, I've seen it four times. The first was the February 2 early showing, the second and third were on opening weekend in a regular AMC theater, and the fourth was in IMAX yesterday, which, like, I'm bothered by the fact that this third movie in the franchise only has limited IMAX screenings whereas the first two were released in all IMAX theaters, and released in 3D to boot. But anyway, character review:  (Also, spoilers abound, so only read this if you've seen it already)

He was at his BEST. That speech he gives to the Vikings in the great hall after Grimmel burns his house down gets more chilling and chilling with each viewing. Years ago when Dean Deblois was dropping hints over what to expect in the sequel, I got the impression that the arch of the trilogy would end with Hiccup's coronation as Chief at the end of the third. Instead, not only is he thrust into the role early thanks to Stoick's heartbreaking death, but we get to see him grow and struggle in the role of Chief, and I thought that character arch was pulled off sensationally. Although he takes after his mother's idealism in his attempts to save all innocent dragons from the hostile Trappers, he also embraces his father's lesson from the sequel that his first duty is to protect his people from harm and danger. His speech in the great hall encapsulates that beautifully with one powerful line after another. 

Hiccup is truly the leader of his people by the end of this movie, and not only that, but at least from my perspective, he's also imminently relatable. He genuinely struggles with himself and questions whether he's capable of doing what needs to be done as Grimmel and the legion of Trappers advance on New Berk. That lack of internal belief he carried around inside him as a scrawny 15 year old boy before he shot down the Night Fury is still there, six years later, as a handsome 21 year old chief. His internal struggle really showed his humanity, and in my opinion, it was Hiccup's journey that drove this third movie more than any other character, including Toothless. Which brings me to our beloved Night Fury:

Ok, so I must confess, I wasn't totally satisfied with how his character was portrayed. What made Toothless so amazingly endearing in the first one was how he struck such a PERFECT balance between being this fierce, ferocious beast on one hand, and being this adorable little puppy dog on the other hand. For the most part, he kept that balance in the sequel, particularly at the end when he challenges Drago's Bewildabeast and becomes the new Alpha of all dragons. In this one, however, I honestly didn't get the sense that Toothless truly was the "Unholy Offspring of Lightning and Death Itself" like the Viking legends said Night Furies were. Even during the above scene in the clouds where he does the Lightning Bolt thing and goes into stealth mode, it felt more like a cheap trick to impress Luna than a symbol of how utterly deadly he can be, and sure enough, he only uses it that one time to get those four Deathgrippers off his back. To me, all those puppy dog moments - of which there are MANY in this one - are less adorable because they aren't contrasted with enough moments of genuine fierceness. Simply put: I liked Toothless a lot more in the first and second movies than in the third one. 

That being said - and I'm going to repeat this in the plot review - the flaws in his character are made up for by the ending. He does the most human thing we've EVER seen him do when he literally gives Hiccup a big bear hug as they say good by. I put my hand over my mouth to control my emotions when I saw that! And then during the final scene where Hiccup visits him after 5 or 6 years, Toothless does a very animal like thing by failing to recognize Hiccup at first, which, as a big fan of the Jurassic World movies, reminded me of how the velociraptor Blue didn't recognize Owen after not seeing him for a year, thus putting Owen in a dangerous situation. But then as soon as Hiccup does the Forbidden Friendship thing, BOOM, Toothless's eyes widen like the sea, and he embraces his dear friend that he can't see every day anymore. To me, that was totally in character of who Toothless is as both a deadly Night Fury, but also the best friend a human could ask for. 

I'm gonna say this straight up: If Captain Marvel, or Star Wars, or Ghostbusters, or whoever, is going for the narrative of Strong, Female, Characters that do Strong, Female, Things, they already have an archetype that everyone loves, and her name is Astrid Hofferson. She is the true embodiment of a strong, female character, and I thought everything that made HTTYD fans love her in the first one was on display again in the third one. I was worried about this too, because in the trailers, it looked like Deblois might have been relying too heavily on the mythos of the first one, specifically the talk on the cliff, which from the trailers looked copied and pasted into the third one. However, it came off SO much better on film than it looked in the trailer, including one of my favorite lines from the entire franchise:

"But you know what? I am the person I am today because of you. And I have watched you doubt yourself every day ever since."

Astrid does what a good woman is supposed to do for her man: Be there for him when he falls down, comfort him with kind words, and remind him of who he is and what he can do. And she does all that in addition to being the warrior princess that Tuffnut correctly described her as. She fulfills the old saying, "behind every great man, stands a great woman." The talk on the cliff in this one is JUST AS GOOD as the same talk in the first one. It didn't come off as contrived or forced like I thought it would. Another favorite part of mine was during Hiccup's speech where she throws her axe on the table and demands that the Vikings hear out his plan to abandon Berk. She does that despite explicitly disagreeing with that plan earlier, which means that she was willing to stand by her man and her Chief even though she herself wasn't enthusiastic about the plan at first. Overall, I felt that the Hiccstrid relationship drove this story almost as much as the friendship between Hiccup and Toothless, and it did it without devolving into cliched romance.

She was good...at least when she had actual time onscreen (more on that in the plot review). I LOVED how she developed a relationship of sorts with her future daughter-in-law by encouraging Astrid to comfort Hiccup when he was doubting himself. I remember thinking to myself in the theater, "wow, Hiccup has two incredible women in his life! What a gift." I also liked how she automatically became an authority figure on Berk despite being gone for 20 years. She basically plays the role of General by scouting out Grimmel's advances towards New Berk and by bailing out Hiccup and the gang when Grimmel outfoxes Hiccup by trapping him on his ship. Between Valka, Eret, Astrid, and Gobber, it's really cool to see how Hiccup has a good leadership council behind him. 

Believe me, his character is SO much cooler if you've seen Game of Thrones. I can't emphasize enough how Kit Herrington's personality comes alive in Eret. In this one, my only complaint is that I wish we saw him more in combat fighting along side Gobber and Valka, although even as an adviser to Hiccup, he plays the role really well. A part of me wishes he gave Hiccup and Stoick more of a challenge when he was working for Drago in the 2nd one, because his knowledge of the world outside Berk is impressive, not to mention he's a natural leader, as he demonstrates during the speech in the great hall when he augments Hiccup's points. Whatever goofball traits he had in the sequel are gone in this one, and I liked that. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about...

Ugh. The teens could have disappeared entirely and it wouldn't have effected the plot at all (Grimmel would have found New Berk eventually. Ruffnut's stupidity simply allowed him to find it faster). There was absolutely no character development from any of them, and in Snotlout's case, he outright devolved. The primary reason I didn't think HTTYD 3 was an A+ movie is because the teens would not shut the hell up. I did NOT find most of their lines or antics funny, I found them distracting and annoying. These characters reached their apex in Gift of the Night Fury, and they never got better after that. 

Is Gobber. Good man, good leader, kind of paranoid. His shining moment in this franchise remains his eulogy during Stoick's funeral. In this one, you could tell that Deblois didn't really have anywhere to go with his character, so he added a subplot with the constantly appearing Hob Gobblers, which to me was what Legend of the Boneknapper should have looked like. One thing I do wish is that we saw one quick appearance of the Trolls alongside the Hob Gobblers on New Berk, as that would have been an amusing validation of his line to Stoick from the first one.

He gets two WONDERFUL flashbacks with Little Hiccup.* But, there's one error that was made during those flashbacks, and I apologize in advance to everyone who has already pointed it out: Stoick's beard should have looked scruffier and redder like it does in the first one when he's younger, as opposed to straight with grey spots like in the second when he's older. His beard is straight with grey spots during the flashbacks. Assuming that wasn't an oversight by Dreamworks, I'm guessing they did it that way because it was easier to animate. Which is understandable, but still, I'm a stickler for consistency. (The missing tree branch in front of Hiccup's face in the first one still jars me every time I see it).

*My gods, every animation studio from Dreamworks to Disney to Pixar has MASTERED the art of creating adorable children. It never ceases to amaze me

Ok, WOW, I loved him as a villain! He was everything Drago Bludvist wasn't: Cunning, crafty, smart, and above all, relatable. Grimmel is what Hiccup possibly WOULD have become if he stuck his knife into the downed Night Fury. Both of them are cerebral, and both of them play this delightful mind game where they try to anticipate each other's moves and countermoves, which Grimmel wins more often than not. As Gobber said to Hiccup, "one day, you're going to pick a fight you can't win." If Drago made Hiccup pay for his idealism by costing him his fathers life, than Grimmel makes Hiccup pay by costing him his Dragon-Human utopia. Grimmel's actions cause Hiccup to eventually accept the painful truth that humans living with dragons every day is not possible without resorting to war and death to keep that utopia a reality. When a villain can change things like that, then you have a damn good villain, and not just a guy who gets in the way periodically like Alvin and Dagur from the TV show. 

Additionally, I thought Grimmel was so much more personable than Drago. His talk to Hiccup in the house evoked the same feelings in me as the talk between Evelyn Deavor and Elastigirl in Incredibles 2, which is to say, I was relating to what BOTH of them were saying to each other. It was like the Light and Dark sides that exist inside all of us were speaking to each other. Whereas Drago was just pure evil and brute force, Grimmel was genuinely compelling and interesting. I would have liked Deblois to take a different story arch with this third film than just throwing another disposable villain in the mix, but as it is, Grimmel was a worthy character. 

In Summary

Hiccup and Astrid were spectacular, Toothless was very good but could have been better, Valka, Eret, and Gobber played their roles well, and Grimmel was an excellent bad guy. The only downside was the Teens. If their comic relief was cut, or if they were actual characters, this could have been an A+ movie from start to finish as opposed to A+ at the end and at specific parts in between (like the speech and the talks on the cliff).

Next Level Painting Skills To Improve Portrait Painting Techniques in Oil

This year I’ve taken a step back to explore some of the techniques that I learned when I first started taking lessons. I noticed that I started to pick up some bad habits in the last few years when I was rushing a lot of the paintings and getting ready for exhibitions etc. So this year I got in touch with my art teacher and I’m trying to focus on quality rather than quantity. One major change in how I’m painting now is that I’m using a physica  reference photo so I can color match and prove my colors. I find this a lot better to improve my color mixing abilities compared to looking at a monitor for reference. A screen monitor always makes a photo look more vibrant than it really is and it’s hard to understand the true colors of the picture, and you can’t put paint on your screen to color watch. So here I’m actually holding the photo in my hand (I’m displaying the model in the video so you can follow along with what I’m painting).

Shapes and planes

I love the photo that I’m working with because I can see so many different shapes and planes on the model’s face. And that gives me more to work with. I have to keep in mind that no matter what part of the face I’m painting, everything is three dimensional. Nothing is flat like a piece of paper, and this is a real person. It’s more intuitive if you imagine that you are painting a ball, the shape is obviously a circle, but the planes curve in all directions. Each latitude and longitude is different in color which makes it look three dimensional.

 Similarly to portraits, every part of the face, essentially anything that has a round surface gets cooler as it recedes away from the camera, and that it’s not just cut off like a piece of paper, this is really important in painting anything that has a curved shape. In this painting, the colors become more cool as it’s further away from the light source. So the plane change on the forehead is not only going from left to right, but it’s also curving up and back. This means that whatever color you use for the forehead, it doesn’t just meet the hairline all of a sudden, there’s actually another color there, a cooler tone that makes it look like it’s receding back before it reaches the hair. 

Color Strings

Knowing how the planes change on your subject will help you understand the colors that you should be looking for. Sometimes we have to know the subject first before we mix the color. I won’t be showing the color mixing palette in this video because I want the focus to be on brush handling, and this particular technique that I’m demonstrating is applying color strings. Imagine a curved surface with light shining on it from one side. The color on the surface changes as the planse changes, and each plane is a different color string. Going back to painting a ball; imagine a globe, we all know that it has latitudes and longitudes. If you were to paint the globe, each row of latitude is a color string, and so is every vertical line of longitude. Each one of those is a color string, and I am mixing and applying each string individually. 

Choosing the right reference photo and model

So it’s kinda like sculpting with oil paint. Instead of doing what I usually do, which is applying paint on the whole area and then mixing additional paint on it while it’s wet, here I’m treating each plane change as a different color. Now this works particularly well under the circumstance that the lighting and angle of the model creates very dynamic colors. You don’t want to choose a photo that’s over exposed, like with a flash cam, which flattens out a lot of colors and you lose the beautiful natural facial structures and features. You want the model’s pose to be anything put straight up front facing, like a passport photo. It can even just be a slightly tiled face. This will create a dominant side of the model's face and the photo to have one dominant light source. You also want to be able to see everything in the photo without it being over exposed, or too dark that you can’t see what's going on in the shadows. That way you will be able to see the model's face like a 3D structure with different colors on each plane.

Edges

The way that each area of the face fuses with each one another creates edges. These are the boundaries between two areas. This can be the area where a shadow meets light or when an object meets a different object. I want to focus on areas where dark meets light because this is easily missed, usually there’s a warm color string in between the dark and the light. Shadows never just go from dark to light, there’s always a warm and more neutral color there. It’s very small, and ignored by a lot of people because you can usually get away with leaving it out. But if you try to paint it in, your subject will look that much more three dimensional. That’s the difference between a face that just looks like a face and a face that is really coming alive. You can see this example where I painted the hair that’s casting a shadow on the side of the cheek. there’s a warm shadow before the flesh tone begins. Same thing with the crease on the cheek beside the mouth, there’s a warm tone beside the crease before it transitions into a highlight color on the face. And this happens in creases and wrinkles in all sizes. Now I know this can be a challenging addition to what you’re used to painting, but what you can do is start looking for those colors. Train your eyes to start seeing them first then it’ll be more intuitive to paint.

Order of operation:

Another technique that I’m demonstrating here is how I’m painting outside in. Meaning I’m painting around the face and working my way into the focal point of the painting. Sometimes I do like to start on other areas like the eyes or whatever pops out at me the most. But for this particular technique, one of the reasons for painting around the focal point is because of the emphasis on edges. The area around the edge that you’re painting needs to be wet in order to blend and fuse together. You should never lay wet paint on a dried surface of a different color. So for the first part of the painting, I am working on the hair, the hairline, and the edge of the cheek together. Another reason why I’m working outside, going from big to small is because typically the closer to the center of the painting, the more fine details there are. Because that’s where the focal point usually is. And therefore you waste less time if you have to change or redo something along the way that has less detail, than to render a lot of fine details for a long time and then having to change it after.

Brush Handing:

You’ll notice I’m applying paint with a very small brush, essentially painting each plane, and then softening the edges with a dry nylon brush. You’ll notice I Labeled Dry Brushing in all the areas where I’m doing this blending technique. The most important thing about this is always keeping the nylon brush dry. After every softening touch, wipe the brush on a paper towel to make sure there’s no paint on it, and then keep blending and softening the painting. When it’s over softened, you come back to apply more paint, to make certain parts stand out more. Dry brushing is not only to blend but you can also move the paint around to change the shapes on your painting. This technique is amazing, and it’s basically my get out of jail free card that I picked up on since I started painting. Because sometimes the brush that I’m painting with is hard to get it right from get go. And having a dry brush will allow me to move the paint around, or blend without adding more paint or making it more messy. This dry brush will allow you to carve your subjects with more precision especially when you’re painting small and detailed areas of the face like the eyes and the mouth.  

In summary these are the main techniques that I’m demonstrating throughout this painting. Always analyze the subject you are painting whether it’s a face, fruit, landscape, or florals. Think about how the subject bends and how all the planes are changing, and work in sections so you can really understand the structure of that area. Whenever a dark and light color converge, look closely and apply the warm mid tone that’s in between the light and shadow. Working outside in, apply each color string separately and then soften the whole area with a dry nylon brush. And last but not least, keep practicing. Because that’s how you will continuously evolve and rediscover yourself as an artist.
