I've said it before and I'll say it again. Gobber must be so fucking fed up with Hiccup and Stoick at all times. Like he grew up with Stoick being a stubborn ass and then Stoick had a child who grew up and is also a stubborn ass.

I cannot imagine having to deal with one Haddock let alone two. Especially httyd1 era where they could barely even be in the same room as each other without there being audible cricket noises oh my fucking god. He would have been a permanent mediator between the two. Constantly listening to them complain about eachother (Which we do actually see in httyd1 funnily enough).

Them two actually beginning to fix their relationship after the red death must have been so great for him. Because yes his best friend and his sort of adoptive son thing are now actually engaging in healthy father son activities with one another but he also no longer has to deal with being sandwiched between two fucking donkeys that can't properly communicate.

But hahaha Gobber your torment doesn't end there. No no no you then have to deal with two of the most dramatic people in the archipelago (why does no one mention how dramatic Stoick is???) constantly wittering in your ear about different plans or inventions or wars and dragons and blah blah blah. You can never escape the incessant rambling of the two idiots you got cast to hell with. You will be forced to listen to a father and son that don't see any reasonable value in agreeing about things like 34% of the time and you will have to either pick a side or attempt to deescalate the awkward glances and frustrated sighs when they are forced to be around each other after a particularly bad episode of being unable to affectively have a conversation about their thoughts and feelings because they're both emotionally repressed and could both use some therapy.

Gobber has seen every single side of the relationship between Hiccup and Stoick and the whiplash from witnessing a heated argument about the meaning of existence itself in the morning and then watching as they joke and laugh about some random crap literally no one understands in the evening will probably end up breaking Gobber's psyche at some point.

That man's life was pain and suffering incarnate and it was purely the fault of the Haddock family.

Are we all just gonna completely ignore that Gobber says he’s dug his way out of shallow graves that we’re deeper than the twins’ boar pit?

I mean, was he being murdered? Or did they think he was already dead?

Imagine Stoick mourning his best friend who just died in battle, only for him to suddenly walk up to him, angry and covered in mud, like “I WAS JUST SLEEPING”.

Let’s be honest though, someone must likely just tried to murder him…

The instruments I think httyd book character would play and how based on vibes alone

Hiccup = took 1-2 years of piano, realized he hated it and switch to the violin. 

Snoutlout = lets his anger out on the drums

Camicazi = rocks out on electric guitar WAY too loud.

Fishlegs = my boy collects instruments like Pokémon. You can hand him any instrument, no matter how obscure and he’ll have a decent melody in less than an hour.

Stoick = told himself that he would learn to play the guitar, bought a guitar, and never did learn. He still has the guitar gathering dust somewhere.

Gobber = playes the bagpipes and horn 

Toothless = plays the triangle but instead of making music, he just hits it very loudly. Same thing with the tambourin.

Stormfly = mostly considers herself a vocalist. Learned exactly ONE impressive sounding song on the piano she can show people, but can’t actually play anything else. 

Alvin = can play the accordion technically but never does it in public. He can also strum out a few really basic songs on the guitar that he learned to “woe” Termagant. 

The witch = plays flutes made out of bone. Specifically and only out of bones. 

Thuggary = plays the trumpet and has been tasked with playing the war drums at least once. Plays his trumpet whenever Hiccup walks in like a dramatic herald. Hiccup has tried getting him to stop. He will not. 

Furious = He screams into a microphone. Does that count?

Windwalker = can play the harp pretty well, but nobody ever asks him to so he doesn't

Is Gobber an Outsider? (A HTTYD Theory)

Hello, my fellow Furians, and welcome to another HTTYD lore article. Today we'll be talking about something that I've been wondering about for the last few years. I had meant to write this a while ago but just never got around to it.

Keep in mind that this could very well be wrong since there's just so many gaps and missing links concerning Gobber's past. But this is simply an observation I've noticed and just want to humbly share with the rest of you.

In the Riders of Berk episode "How to Pick Your Dragon", Stoick says this after Hiccup asks this question:

Stoick: A friend, huh? Like me and Gobber? Hiccup: Yeah, perfect. What did you do when you two met? Stoick: That's my wife you're talking to, you one-legged lout!

From this conversation, two clues can be ascertained. One, that the first time they met, Stoick had to tell him whose wife it was, when, if Gobber had been a native, he should have already known since weddings were community events. Two, Gobber was one-legged already when they had met.

And then there's the fact that that was their first meeting. If Gobber had been a Berkian native, then Stoick, the chief's son, would've known him almost from the beginning, despite them being 5 years apart.

What's interesting is that in the "Legend of the Bonenapper" short film, Gobber tells the gang of his misadventures in his younger days — exaggerated they may be. Throughout the entire franchise, most of his stories had him outside of Berk and around the Archipelago.

He may have been a wanderer who couldn't settle anywhere for long on account of him always being chased by the Bonenapper for the "treasure". He eventually settled on Berk, and after some decades, felt that he had finally escaped it, only for it to come again in the film. It's also noticeable that nobody believes Gobber when he says that the Bonenapper is after him (of course, it didn't help that Gobber always changes his stories the more he tells them).

Again, we have to take some of it with a few grains of salt on account of his history of telling tall tales. However, that doesn't take away the fact that Gobber and Stoick didn't know each other in their younger days. In "Cast Out" Gobber tells Hiccup about Alvin and Stoick's relationship as if he had heard it second-hand from either Stoick or somebody else, rather than as a bystander who witnessed those events with his own eyes.

Another theory could be that Gobber was Berkian but was gone a lot due to visiting external family or his family wanted to be away from the dragon raids until their son was older. Could be also that Gobber had the travel bug and enjoyed visiting other places. Who knows. 🤷‍♂️

What do you guys think? Think my theory is plausible? Let me know what ideas you may have about Gobber's origins.

...have we seen Live Action Gobber yet? Honestly I'm fine if they recast him but I really want Craig Ferguson to come back since Gerard is back as Stoick. Their bromantic / life partner vibes were immaculate.

I don't think there's been a visual reveal of Gobber in costume yet! But I haven't been looking. You'll be better off getting live action news from others who are following it intentionally! (I'm just passively getting stream runoff) I know they announced the cast a while back, so you would be able to look up who's playing Gobber (it's not Craig). I haven't been planning to blog about the live action... though, hah, I've already broken that and opined. 😂😂😂😂

I adore the bromance between Stoick and Gobber. I am with you so hard - immaculate. It's a relationship I don't think gets talked about enough. Like. It's totes talked about and I love it. But it cannot be talked about enough. SO GOOD!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!
