There's something really fascinating about how Athena treats Diomedes so differently from how treats Penelope and Odysseus (even Telemachus but that's a lil different too)

Athena has basically known Diomedes since he was born (some even say that she had a say in naming him) because of Tydeus. I don't think it's far-fetched to say that in a way, she possibly "molded" him. And Diomedes is kind of known for being the "perfect warrior king". He's respectful of the gods and most of his comrades, an incredibly skilled soldier, and has already achieved so many things despite being one of the youngest kings in the war.

I sadly think that's why Athena treats him so differently than Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus.

She cares for him, but it's still "distant" in a way. Or almost in an "I molded you. You will react the way I would want you to therefore I will not be surprised."

When it seems like she's known her other favored mortals for less long, she didn't get to "mold" them. They surprise and bring something "new" for her. She sees her little tricksters' scheme and plot and watches with intrigue but watching the perfect warrior is a "Yes, perfect form. That's what I'd do."

I mean even how her favored mortals pray to her tells you a lot about the relationships they have.

For example, in the Iliad, Odysseus doesn't need to really give as much reverence to her to "earn her favor" during book 10's Night Raid.

Odysseus rejoiced, and prayed to Pallas Athene: ‘Hear me, daughter of aegis-bearing Zeus, you who are with me in all my adventures, protecting me wherever I go. Show me your love, Athene, now, more than ever, and grant we return to the ships having won renown, with some brave act that will grieve the Trojans greatly.’ And Diomedes of the loud war-cry followed him in prayer: ‘Hear me also, Atrytone, daughter of Zeus. Diomedes brings up his dad and offers a young heifer (granted that could just be how Diomedes is with every immortal) while Odysseus doesn't and is basically like "Yo, help me out like you always do!". Odysseus is much more casual and personal with Athena. And with Penelope, Athena takes the form of one of her sisters to comfort her!

While Athena also most likely has known Telemachus since he was a baby, she's still closer to him than Diomedes.

Imagine that. You're basically molded by a goddess since birth, listen to her and other immortals dutifully, basically become her perfect warrior, and yet you can't seem to reach that familiarity with her. The same warmth she has for her other favored mortals.

as i'm workin on my Ancient stuff- i've got to say that it is really interesting and neat (read: nasty) that there's a good chance most of the Ancient population probably didn't actually wear masks. but We think they did cuz the only really solid evidence of what they looked like at all all comes from places of the higher social circles. and those strived for religious... superiority, i guess. brownie points, not actual dedication to the religion for the sake of its teachings but either because it made them look good, put them higher in the social hierarchy or whatever manipulation have you (or the flawed look upon the religion aka "we gotta get out of this cycle no matter what")

all we are left with are the bastards. the simple people and their cultures that were left to weather the Iterators' rains were simply washed away. nobody cared for their way of life- as long as it served the higher circles well and they stayed submissive (enough so that at the end everyone would take a dip in the void), nobody had to give a singular shit

just how much do we not know about the Ancients' *everything* because of this disregard? how much do we think we are right about, when such is true only for the small but privileged piece of the species?

Kala & Ali: The fuck is going on there but it's lowkey scary?? somehow??? (it's the being in sync as people and being in sync as wardens and committing to the bit) During the blight/ before they were An Item: "maker they are so stupid"

Liam & Fenris: "if you go near them and get cavities don't say i didn't warn you" cit. Varric probably There are definitely whispers and rumours during Champion times but Liam does keep his love life close to his chest.

Lilian & Isabela: The common impression is that they aren't serious and/or the relationship is purely superficial. During Kirkwall times there are rumours that the Champion is trying o hide her affair with the alienage elf girl by being so publicly physical with Isabela.

Lilian & Merrill: They are not romantically involved but observers beg to differ, and the two of them don't argue with it because they're also not not partners, and they don't owe anyone an explanation. Early on Lilian is way more comfortable with "romantic" (i.e. what can be read as romantic) gestures towards Merrill since she, yknow, doesn't have romantic feelings for her. And people do love to gossip..

June & Cullen: Gonna get different impressions depending on who you ask; those who saw them early on probably thought it was a dumpster fire fuelled by pent up horny energy (they are not entirely wrong). People who see them later on assume they're your average romantic couple, and they've stopped trying to explain otherwise. There's def been more than one rumour about the spicy romance between the Inquisitor and her Commander.

Ari & Josie: A sight to behold for sure. Also scary as fuck, depending on who you are. If they display as a couple in public they absolutely do it On Purpose; most of the time, anyway. Makes it hard to discern if they are putting on a show, masking an affair, or genuinely an item; a goldmine for gossip, in any case

Also shout out to Var'Renan and Tamlen/ Var'renan and Morrigan who also are assumed to be a couple by outside observers a lot (they are not)

Liam/Fenris: i guess amicable exes applies in the og timeline?

including the excerpts from that form at the end of the chapters is actually something i really like that i did. at first, it stemmed from having built up the form and its importance for a prologue and a first chapter, and it didn't feel right to just say 'yeah and then they submitted it and she read it through' but also i didn't want to just drop the answers into the middle of the story or write an awkward scene where sheari and obikin just read each other what they wrote - i thought about it, and it felt way too stilted

so at the end as separate from the story is the best way i could think to include those answers!! and it also really does go to show like...how much both anakin and obi-wan are lying to themselves about their feelings/how oblivious they really are because obi-wan submitting this as his truthful "i promise i'm not drunk and have thought about this" answer and it still being so WILDLY different from his actions that chapter......

bestie the only thing that's similar is his understanding that for anakin, obi-wan is a jedi and part of the jedi order and the jedi order is anakin's job but not where he wants to spend his free time, ergo obi-wan is part of the jedi order and spending any time with him is part of anakin's duties. not where he would choose to be. because he has already chosen to love and marry someone else. and he never had a choice, not really, about obi-wan. when he chose to leave tatooine, it was to leave with qui-gon jinn
