canon is my sandbox and i can do whatever i want forever, which means: Veil Jumper June and Lord of Fortune Addie! NPC headcanons be upon ye:

June's not Inky but she is still vaguely working for the Inquisition. Her research makes her cross paths with Veil Jumpers sooner or later, and after collaborating for a while decides to (loosely) join up with them

She goes by Jay among the Jumpers because yknow, introducing herself as "June" among a group that's mostly Dalish is awkward. It's a play on the letter "j" and also her "Bluejay" nickname

She'll pop up around Arlathan forest and she'll have dialogue with Bellara and Harding. If you wanna get ambient dialogue about what some of the old Inquisition members are up to, she's your guy

When you visit the Halls of Valor, there's a chance that Adriel greets you instead of Isabela. Everyone here seems to accept her authority without question

She'll occasionally drop hints about what Hawke(s) and co are up to; this may or may not include Lilian (funny coincidence that auntie 'Bela's girlfriend has the same last name as her dad!)

What are Liam and Fenris doing? That's, um.. private. Maybe you can coax it out of her if you hang around often enough! or maybe Neve can piece it together

Bonus Kala cameo: Somewhere in the Deep Roads you can come across a clearing littered with darkspawn corpses, and in the middle, the corpses of two Wardens and a mabari. There's a "worn mabari collar" memento here with "Barksparn" on the name plate

If you pay attention towards the beginning of the area, there's a mark scratched into a wall that you can't decipher except if you're a Warden. Otherwise, if Davrin is in the party, he'll tell you what it means: [date]. three. not returning.

Marina Amell: While incredibly grateful for everything the Circle taught her, Marina would be the first to say the more practical application of her magic in her time with the Wardens lead to a great deal more growth and knowledge than she might have had otherwise. She slogged through necessary endless books and essays, but always preferred the more hands-on lessons. Though she deeply respects and loves Irving, she finds a kind of kindred spirit with Wynne in their wanderlust and restlessness. She is a quick learning, but has always learned best by doing.

Cadence Tabris: Growing up in the Denerim Alienage, Cadence was never really afforded an opportunity for any sort of formal or extensive education. They are able to read and write with a common vocabulary, and well versed in the history of the elves of their Alienage. The geography of Fereldan, or indeed Thedas at large, is largely foreign to them. They are… selective about what they choose to pay attention to and retain as some opportunities to expand their knowledge present themselves, recognizing that some information might be used to their advantage, but largely disinterested in the history of humans and their pettiness and barbarism. Their diplomacy is perhaps a little less polished as a result, though this might equally be attributed to the impatience simmering just beneath the surface. Regardless, the Warden Commander seems to get the job done.

Eloise Trevelan: While too empathetic a soul to derive any pleasure from playing The Game, Eloise might actually be quite good at it if she cared to play, having extensive knowledge of Thedas and it’s nobility’s history. Eloise often has a near-perfect recall with the things she’s read, though, only for subjects which she herself finds interesting. She speaks a passable/conversational amount of three secondary languages and was a credit to the Ostwick Circle before it’s downfall. After taking up the mantle of “Herald of Andraste”, however, Eloise often finds herself frustrated with the disparity between her book and practical knowledge, both the Circle and prior noble upbringing leaving her ill-prepared for some of the day to day realities and necessary skills of her new position (camping, cooking, etc).

Garrett Hawke: Though his jovial, mischevious nature is often mistaken as an incapacity to ever be serious, Garrett was actually very much aware of his good fortune as well as the strain educating and hiding he and Bethany’s gifts put on the rest of his family. He may not always have enjoyed his lessons, but he always applied himself and remembered everything Malcolm taught or said to him, even if some of the lessons felt more tedious than others.

Sonja Hawke: Sonja is largely indifferent towards the homeschooling her mother provided her with. Leandra did her best, of course, but was never much of a scholar herself, and could never seem to decide whether or not to instruct her daughter in the ways and etiquette of the noble life she left behind when she eloped, or to accept their new lot in life. She finds a good deal of joy in music and learning new songs, however.

Orana: Never formally educated, Orana often uses the assumptions others might make of her past to her advantage. While it is only recently she’s learned how to read, the elf has an ear for languages that coupled with her innate ability as a former servant and slave helps her uncover all manner of information she can sell or use to her advantage. She loves stories and poetry but is still better versed and generally more likely to consume them orally than sit down with a book, and prefers the stories about individuals- people she can put a face to- over general history.

Eshalineva Lavellan: While a force to be reckoned with in a fight, Neva is reluctant to give credit to anyone, but herself, carrying a deep-seated bitterness and hurt after being passed over as the clan’s First. She would argue any skills she’s developed since have been out of spite, and while well-versed in a good deal of Dalish history, has yet to find much practical application for it. She knows the King’s Tongue, but will often defer to Elvhen when and wherever possible simply to annoy or separate herself from those around her. Prickly with just about everyone, her education doesn’t have much impact one way or the other on her ability or decisions as the leader of the Inquisition.

June Lavellan: Displaying from an early age a tendency to be overwhelmed by too much bustle, people, or noise, June loves to learn and would choose a library or new book over most people. Actively seeking out new knowledge wherever he can and largely self-taught, June has mastered speaking, reading, and writing in several languages. Truth be told, June would be far more comfortable perhaps even better suited had fate seen fit to put him in an advisory sort of role within the Inquisition. He is most at ease left to his own devices, and when not with a book can be found in the stables tending to his steeds, or entertaining the children in the garden with stories. That said, his knowledge of history, politics, and languages are extensive enough to generally make up for weaker social skills. He gets on very well (in small doses at a time) with similarly educated or academic minds like Solas, Dorian, Josephine, Leliana, or Vivienne.

i'm gonna say farah just bc that's who i play with but the same is definitely applicable to felix. but!!! they would literally end the world together are u kidding me most chaotic couple in history <3 perfect for one another <3 absolutely the kind of ship that finishes each others sandwiches sentences and spends every minute together. at the carnival they would spend forever trying to win each other stuffed animals n would compete to see who could get the biggest one. farah is very straight-forward unlike some people and open too which i think june would rly appreciate!!! bc she's very insecure at her core n just having someone in her corner who openly loves every bit of her would do wonders for her i think. on farah's end i think she'd rly appreciate having someone who doesn't feel like she's 'too much' or anything; june rly appreciates having someone around who matches her energy n is very open abt that. would absolutely start a fight if anyone ever made farah feel bad. 10/10 ship would die for them

oooh. i'm honestly not sure omg this is not a ship i've ever considered before. i think? hm. ok. in canon he initially makes her very uncomfortable for 2 reasons: 1 is gross internalised chantry-encouraged fantasy-racism (though she gets over that). 2 is that she doesn't like the idea of having someone around who can read her emotions and thoughts from her gestures or microexpressions, bc even if she seems very open she does actually have a lot of secrets, and that concern takes a lil longer to disperse.

but i think honestly even without those concerns they just arent the kind of people to click romantically?? sex for one means a lot to her so they couldnt have a kinda casual hookup beginning for their relationship?? n i just think they operate in very different ways dsjksdkjds they would probably hurt each other just bc they would want different things from the relationship n roslyn's communication skills when it comes to sort of. being honest and putting all her cards on the table abt what she needs aren't great, tbh

end-of-year fic writer roundup

thanks so much to @another-rogue-trevelyan, @blarrghe, @sapphicvalhallas and @barbex for tagging me in this - it was great to read all of yours <3 I’ve not done much art, so will stick to fic!

word count since I started writing in June, according to my bad maths and AO3: 35,595 published, 52,751 overall

new things I tried this year: fanfic in general! I’d never read nor written fanfic before roughly April this year, but it’s been one of the few great things that rona’s introduced into my life. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy writing, but the best thing has been meeting some ridiculously lovely and talented people along the way.

also, digital art. I haven’t drawn since GCSE art - so in about 7 years - but I thought why the fuck not teach myself how to art?

fic I spent the most time on: definitely the multi-chap pre-Origins fic I don’t talk about because it’s not great, but otherwise, my modern AU one-shot La vie en rose, or my first Carver/Merrill fic Go On Home.

fic I spent the least time on: I wrote 95% of and she said honey, take me dancing between 12 and 2 a.m. one slightly delerious Saturday night, but it turned out surprisingly well to say I’d almost forgotten what words were by the half-1 point.

also, the two fics I’ve written as part of @dadrunkwriting so far, which has been a wild amount of fun.

favourite thing I wrote: oh god this is a hard choice. La vie en rose made me grin like an idiot the most whilst writing, but I love Grimoire a whole lot because WE ALWAYS NEED MORE SOFT HANDERS. I also love all my Carver/Merrill fics dearly - but probably …honey, take me dancing the most.

favourite thing I read: THERE’S TOO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM. so, I'm gonna take a leaf out of the wonderful @another-rogue-trevelyan’s book and highlight a couple of the creators who’ve brought me insane amounts of joy this year:

what to say about @veorlian other than that they’re frantastic in every way? their writing is incredible, their OCs make me feel many things (I would take a bullet for Dhava), and the messages I get from them that start with ‘this but Marian and Garrett are wearing it to the Winter Palace’ are one of my main sources of serotonin.

@kirkwallgremlin is the queen of Carvistair, and such a wonderful person to boot. Emily has such a talent for capturing character through small details and dialogue, makes wonderful OCs, and also has the best headcanons - please write the roommates au thank you xx

any time I see @pinkfadespirit post a work, it’s an instant reblog because my god, their writing - from longfics to ficlets - makes me FEEL SO MANY THINGS. Night Shift is incredible and everyone who needs a DA2 modern vampire AU should read it right now.

do you want a bloody good solavellan modern AU? @oxygenforthewicked’s written it. Beneath the Veilfire is so so good - the characterisation is fantastic, the modern setting is done so well, and the writing is beautiful.

writing goals for next year: write more, get better, shout about other writers forever. other than that, learn how to actually plot? maybe write some smut? also, WRITE A LONGFIC.

eira mahariel (two-handed berserk/champ spec), rhett hawke (two-handed berserk spec), alas lavellan (mage knight enchanter spec), romanced alistair/fenris/dorian respectively

shiv tabris (dual wield duelist/assassin spec), radella “rads” hawke (mage spirit healer spec), kat adaar (two-handed reaver spec), romanced morrigan/isabela/cassandra respectively because im a pc gamer and i think i should be able to date whatever video game woman i like because im infinitely better than cishet men

this world state said yeah i respect mens rights. mens rights to shut the fuck up

twins bronson (sword/shield reaver spec) & bryant cousland (archer ranger spec), carmine hawke (archer assassin spec), syracuse trevelyan (dual wield tempest spec), romanced zevran/anora/josephine/bull. if ur wondering how that works my city now and the warden, hawke and the inquisitor should all meet and so they do because i Said So

riva amell (mage arcane warrior/battlemage spec), graham “gray” hawke (mage force spec), hellathen “hela” lavellan (archer assassin spec); romanced cullen/anders and later blackwall because hawke only likes men who will break his heart. hela doesn’t have a romance because she’s literally 20. who let her lead the inquisition (me it was me). also it should be noted the version of cullen i have in my head only vaguely resembles actual cullen because i write better than dragon age writers ever could and i gave him an Actual Cohesive Narrative and he gets bullied relentlessly for being scrawnier than his mage boyfriend

malien “mal” surana (mage spirit healer/keeper spec), jules hawke (sword/shield reaver spec), ash adaar (mage rift spec), romanced leliana/merrill/krem because i should have been able to kiss krem and its a Crime that i am not allowed to

knight enchanter is a Very op specialization and by Very op i mean it makes a mage with their built-in low constitution stats able to solo the biggest baddest dragon in the game on nightmare mode in under five minutes so like. alas lavellan fist fights dragons for fun send tweet

i think lavellans should be able to hit ppl with bricks for all the shit they endure. thus solas gets pranked by mahariel and alas by which i mean they just tip buckets of water onto him from the rookery

kat might be my only competent inquisitor but she did also try to knock out the right hand of the divine and attempt to gap even tho there’s fucky magic burning up her hand so does she have a brain cell? you decide

also its fantasy land and i do what i want so kat has blue/gold sectoral heterochromia

gray “mage rights” hawke is best friends with fenris which surprises literally everyone. their friendship started because they got into a fist fight and then they were like okay i respect u now. hawke is like hey fenris give me ur sword i have a fun trick to show u [uses his sword as a foci to zap carver in the ass with lightning]

i am Always thinking abt like how cullen could have been one man anti-chantry propaganda machine if he hadn’t so blatantly been shoehorned into every game past origins so anyway bioware forgot about a wholeass moon i can write what i like. [holds up cullen by the scruff of his stupid armor] not only are you bisexual you are also a bottom

i also Hate the whole uwu mage haters get fixed by romancing a mage

unlocked secret dialogue option where my inquisitors verbally cuss out dorian’s dad instead of whatever sympathetic narrative the writers were going for cuz its bullshit.

riva is a showoff and a Menace about being as good as he is because he unabashedly loves being a mage and hes like oooh look at me im sexy i dont need to use my hands to cast magic because i’m just that good ;)) and you know what. hes right.

gray, on the other hand, does Not want to be mage. he wants to be a druffalo farmer and retire in the hinterlands and be left the fuck alone. unfortunately he is gay and has one brain cell and terrible, terrible taste in men. ribbed relentlessly for this by riva (altho does he have room to talk hes been hung up on cullen since he was like 13)

shiv is trans n kieran is the result of doing the dark ritual with her wife and he looks a Lot like shiv (dark skin pointed ears, shock-white hair) and morrigan always just Assumed she dyed it or did something magic with it so seeing their kid come out like that was a WEIRD time for her

leliana almost Murdered by cassandra in worldstate 5 because the warden is Actually There The Whole Time, but its been 10 years, mal’s cut off all her hair and gotten full facial tattoos and she’s like “no one will know its me its fine” and she’s right. she gets away with it. only cullen like, Knows, because he knew her before the blight but he doesnt have a death wish n he like. will Not piss her off

shes dalish by birth n she was stolen from her clan by templars and thus is vehemently anti-circle and anti-chantry in general

uhhh the vallaslin (elf face tattoos) of my 4 dalish characters are:

eira = ghilan’nain (chose em cuz shes rlly interested in the navigation aspect of the goddess)

alas = falon’din (god of the dead n he picked them because he’s Also the god of fortune and alas is like tee hee fun but also he can and will kill u if u fuck with him so yk its fitting)

hela = june (god of the craft bc she likes to Make things but june is also the god who taught the elves 2 hunt and hela is. a hunter.)

mal = elgar’nan (allfather/god of vengeance bc. she is Vengeful. she is Angry. but yk fucking with shem politics and fucking their divine is like. mal may have little a retribution. as a treat.) yes she has the full half-face solid colour tattoo she does NOT fuck around.

bronson and bryant r not genetically identical but they Look similar enough 2 anyone who doesn’t know them well enough 2 play spot the distance. anora and bronson think this is a super fun game to play, especially when nobles realize they’ve swapped out the king but they’re too nervous to say anything

eira mahariel has two hands. one is for holding hands with alistair and the other is for throttling elven gods, apparently. she’s killed one before so solas she’s coming for your bitch ass next. watch urself.

speaking of eira and alistair are married thru dalish tradition and humans don’t recognize it n alistair loves 2 re-propose to her with random things. he’ll just pick up like. a bit of cheese and be like “marry me ;)” and she’s like GASP but whatever will the chantry say!!!! all of their friends r sick of them
