I actually met an older woman who left her career to stay at home. I met her when I worked in a specialty food shop, where she'd come in to shop for little fun food snacks for her and her husband to enjoy together once he was off work. She admitted what her deal was to me fairly early on: she had a good career, then her husband got a huge promotion to a new city, so instead of trying to find a new job after they moved, they made the decision together that they could live on his income and enjoy more time together.

This by NO MEANS was Trad-Wifery, but this is what a true partnership and single income living meant for them (and honestly, it looked like the healthiest version of single income living to me) - they were lucky enough to survive and thrive on one income, and in this, they got more time together.

Every time I saw her and she talked about how she was doing, she was almost apologetic to me when she talked about the freedoms she now had, and she also respected the heck outta my work. She didn't think she would end up ever not working, but she and her husband were in a phenomenally rare position to get more time together so they were going to treasure it.

What I liked the most is she acknowledged that surviving on one income is so rare, but also didn't rub it in my face that she could go buy little treats while I had to work to sell those treats.

So uhhh... good news, for those who like some parts of stay-at-home... it is possible, and probably more possible with your partner when you're both older if one partner really finds a way to progress their career. It may be rare, but you know... maybe???

But no matter what, please be nice to people you interact with, especially if you come from a place of privilege against those who won't have those kinds of chances.

Look, the bottom line is this. You're gonna be wrong and fuck up sometimes, that's just how being human works. No matter what you mean or how much you care, sometimes, you're gonna do something or say something that hurts someone or perpetuates bigotry you don't believe in.

The goal isn't to do no wrong, that's an impossible standard. The mark of "a good person" isn't that they always do good, it's that they're willing to admit when they've failed, done wrong, made a mistake, and they're willing to course-correct when they do.

It's important that you're trying. It's okay to be the bad guy. You don't need to get defensive, you don't need to stake your identity in "person who never does that kind of wrong." You just gotta be able to say "Fuck, my bad, I'm sorry," accept that your behavior didn't reflect your beliefs, and change your behavior so that it better represents who you mean to be.

The less time you spend lingering on whether it feels like people believe you are who you say you are, the more time you can spend getting better at being that person.

Some people will try to tear you down when you make mistakes, they'll try to pigeonhole you as a "bad person," someone whose very existence is defined by doing harm. This isn't your problem, and it's not your responsibility to prove anything to them. They don't have to believe you, and you don't have to appease them. So long as you're willing to accept when you *do* hurt someone, intentional or not, and you're willng to put in the effort to make reparations and change, you'll never "be a bad person."

Let yourself fuck up. All you have to do is course-correct when you notice your actions' impact have strayed from your intentions. The right people will notice that effort, and they'll be proud of you. And perhaps most importantly of all, they'll let you make that effort. Anyone who tells you it's too late to change, to discourage you from improving, or stop you from trying, is not your frend. You don't have to impress them. Ignore them, and let yourself change.

with the amount that the main series dunks on the forbidden cities i would just love for unraveled to be just an unabashed celebration of humanity. like yes there is poverty and pollution and crime but also there is dancing and music and rollercoasters and scary movies. let keefe discover the beauty here! the first book was all about the wonder of the lost cities but unraveled could be all about the wonder of the forbidden cities

You can look up a sample ballot for your state and see who the hell is on there and look em up, see if their stance isn't something like "dismantle public education". Also double check what certain policies actually Mean because there tends to be conservative shit worded in a way that will try to trick you into saying yes to something you Don’t want
