I am going to ramble a lot so sorry about that and thanks for giving me permission to do so.

I would have a hard time putting together "recs for someone who enjoyed TYK", because I think it's an unusual type of story. It's about a protagonist who's so tired of being a main character (or even a secondary character). All he wants is to be a side character who enjoys himself and isn't important enough to get hit by plot shrapnel. I remember @specialability making the astute observation that TYK has a lot in common with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. What do side characters do, when the main characters aren't on stage? But TYK emanates joy that you don't find in the other existentialist stories I've read (which may say more about my own deficiency than the genre itself). Zhou Zishu is dying, but he finds a lot of happiness in spending every day exactly as he wants to. Taking care of Zhang Chengling, untangling the Glazed Spiral mystery, and messing around with Wen Kexing: this is all meaningful to him because it's how he wants to spend the rest of his life. However short that life may be.

That being said, since you gave me permission, I'm going to talk about what I've read recently!

One Hundred Years of Solitude (Gabriel Garcìa Márquez) left a really strong impression on me. I guess because the characters in the Buendía family (the novel tells this family's story) trap themselves into lives that they don't enjoy at all. Some of them live for a hundred years or more, but they never find the companionship and happiness that they crave. I wish I could say more about this story, but it really made me want to read more magic realism, and learn about Latin American history to understand the context.

I watched AMC's Interview with the Vampire and it ate my brain. One similarity between the Vampire Chronicles and Faraway Wanderers is that their television adaptations tore apart the source material to make something new. And I love what they did with Interview with the Vampire, because they kept what was so interesting from the books: the struggle between a vampire's murderous, predatory nature, and their moral sense as a sapient being. The show also makes explicit the parallel between this struggle and Louis' struggle with his queerness: should he live in hypocrisy, condemning his true nature even though he can't change it? Or should he abandon the moral scruples that (in his mind) connect him with his vestigial humanity? It makes sense to me, and I love the story of the show. There are some elements I miss from the books, but to me, the show surpasses the sum of its parts.

I'm currently reading Tolkien's Silmarillion! I guess one thread that unites the three works I've mentioned today is "unbelievably messy family drama". Which again, is notably missing from TYK...but it is one of my personal favorite ingredients. Elf aristocratic infighting goes off the chain like nothing else. The Silmarillion is a tragedy, you know? When you read the Lord of the Rings, you feel that the most spectacular days of this world have passed already. You see those splendors in the Silmarillion and know that they're doomed. It's a lot more gothic than I expected. I have to space out how much I read at a time. I've just started Beren and Lùthien, which promises to deliver something of a breather.

I am watching Daisy Jones & the Six rn, a fictional band which was really popular in the 70s but had a fallout and no one answered why, until 20 years later when they interview the band members and people involved with them, a documentary of sorts.

And I love that sort of thing.

So, idea: Bruce was a brilliant scientist and one day, he disappeared from the face of the earth (on the day of the gamma bomb test). They make a documentary about Bruce Banner in the 80s/90s.

None of his still living family members wanted to participate.

They pull in some other people.

Elementary school teacher: "He was gifted from a young age. Always on top of his class. Could read before he was four years old. But he wasn't really sociable. He didn't have any friends, no. The other kids quickly saw him as a target and ganged up on him."

"It was usually his mom who picked him up. Brian Banner, his father, was known to... Not be a pleasant person. A very angry and also insecure man.”

UMMM WELL- I'll put my thoughts on Romance Doll under a break at the end because the movie is pretty nsfw and weird and yeah...

Quartet is on my list! I'm definitely going to watch it at some point, but I also really wanna watch Miracles! Honestly that one has been the most interesting to me from the beginning but my adhd is just causing me to watch whatever's convenient first, not the ONE IVE REALLY WANTED TO WATCH THIS WHOLE TIME. I still have to finish Koisenu Futari too... I stopped that one cuz I was watching it with someone and we had a long period of time where we couldn't watch it. And then also it's just VERY HEAVY as a person who happens to be demi who has gone through periods of feeling like I could be aroace in the past. It's so realistic and deals with the painful things as well as the funny things and I am scared to finish it bc I KNOW THERES MORE HEAVY SHIT TO COME but it's an amazing show AND I DO WANT TO FINISH THAT ONE TOO.

Ok so, this movie is very much one of those WEIRDLY REALISTIC stories where all the characters are so real and flawed and HUGE MISTAKES ARE MADE by characters and it's just such a wild ride. You probably haven't heard about it because its FUCKING WACK.

Without giving too much away in case you wanna watch it (netflix dropped it last monday, which is actually why I ended up watching it over the weekend at all, but it's still available to rent on amazon 🙄) Issey plays Tetsuo, an unemployed art college grad who is desperate for a job. His friend gave him a tip about this sketchy job opening but told him literally nothing else about it. He shows up and this old woman greets him and shows him around and he's a bit shocked to find out it's a shop that makes SILICONE SEX DOLLS. The woman is like "your friend didn't tell you that???" And Tetsuo was like "he literally just said there was a job here-" and she laughs and says "Some friend he is then!" Honestly I loved the old lady she's great, I wish I could remember her name I'm too lazy to go look it up rn.

Anyway so yeah, he takes the job even though the interview was super awkward and there's this gross pervy old guy who works there and he doesn't really care about the subject matter he just needs money (mood)

One thing and another happens (and a lot of me wanting to slap the old man into next tuesday, seriously he's the worst) and a little bit later Tetsuo meets the love of his life through some bullshit connection to his job, and they end up getting married some time after, but she doesn't know what he does for a living and ITS ALL VERY HARD TO EXPLAIN WHY HE KEEPS THAT FROM HER without spoiling things but just- the movie is wack, I really didn't like it in the beginning but it pulls a complete 180 and ends up being this weirdly emotional and AT TIMES, a holesome wholesome slice of life movie??

Don't get me wrong it doesn't sugarcoat things like objectification of women and there's some degree of realistic portrayal of that bc of the whole Tetsuo working at a sex doll shop thing, it is very true to life- how men can be gross even if they aren't going so far as assaulting anyone. It doesn't excuse it either it just presents it as it is, which is good I think. But then there are OTHER moments where the movie is very sex positive- so its a wild fucking trip tbh. Definitely don't watch it if you have sensitivities to the things I mentioned above bc bro omg the first half almost had me like "yeah I can't watch this" a couple times jfc.

BASICALLY by the end of the movie the message is that communication and being open with people you love (and not getting bogged down with anxiety and guilt) is important, because on top of not being fair to the people who are important to you, hiding things from them can eat you up inside and make you act irrationally and hurt them even more whether you realize it or not. And also, you never know how someone will feel about the things you don't want to tell them. Something that could be huge to you could be no big deal to another.

Its just a very interesting movie. I don't know if I'd recommend it, theres some NUCLEAR SECOND HAND EMBARRASSMENT CRINGE MOMENTS like oh my god i wanted to die- and like I said above, there's lots of intense subject matter and some not so pretty moments that a lot of people may want to avoid. Id for sure check one of those sites that gives content warnings before watching bc hoo boy...

But all that aside, once again Issey is an incredible actor and his range is apparent in this movie. I saw some like- borderline SLAPSTICK physical comedy moments that had me so surprised bc he did them so well but its so new and different from anything else ive watched him star in. Dude is just unstoppable tbh. He HAS 👏 THE 👏 RANGE!! 👏

Also you get to see him naked a lot. So there's that!

For a general life update for everyone: Kinda want to use this site more, but just not sure what I'd use it for.. Rambling time~

(tl;dr: anxiety's a butt, going traveling and cosplaying and will finally be seeing a therapist in a few monthss)

I've been in a huge art rut lately and just struggle with coming up with ideas what to draw, and have a lot of insecurities about the content of my past few pictures (which I think are against guidelines here so I probably won't post them on the RN tumblr after all.. I did update the website with all current images at least, but I still feel sick thinking about what I've made and regret it..)

Was in a huge wave of depression the past few weeks, but slowly climbing back out of it.. Still jobless and living off of being a vtuber on Twitch and art commissions, which is a struggle, but I'm just managing to scrape by- definitely been feeling the burnout, though..

Also going traveling across the country next week- meeting up with some online friends and going with them to a con, got a cosplay made and everything to go as my husbando Mizuno Yuu (I'd prefer a better cardigan, though.. the one I got was more yellow than I'd hoped and the only decent alternative I've found on Uniqlo won't be in stock in time, I think)

Still anxious about it, though.. will be gone for ten days, my social anxiety is very bad, and I'll be in an unfamiliar place hanging with people for the first time for ten days.. I'm not really interested in the con at all and I'm pretty scared about going, but will try to just keep my brain turned off and try to have a good time.

But yeah, otherwise just existing and floating around day by day- haven't been able to do much of anything and it really gets to me.. My anxiety has been so severe that it interferes with everything and I can't even think of doing anything because of it- anything can give me a bad panic attack these days, and I'm too afraid to take medication to treat it just yet, though I think it's needed at this point.

However, I did get a new primary doctor earlier this month, and they were able to find me a therapist for depression/anxiety and a nutritionist to see for my eating disorder- I'll be interviewed for that once I get back from my trip, so hopefully those go well..

Very personally, the most touching part is in their interview: that some of the good things you long to pursue do exist in this world. you just haven't discovered it.

Especially in terms of people. People admire your talent. People with shared values. People you would want to have around. They exist.

I've been surviving on this idea since a long, long time ago. To put it very rationally, statistically speaking, with such a large population in the world and a limited variety of personalities, it's simply unlikely to be the fact that like-minded people don’t exist for someone.

No offense to "everyone being unique and special." It's like an internalized Esprit de Corps thing.

I believe there are countless others moving toward the same future as I am. We just have different starts, so our paths may never cross. Still, we'll reunite when this journey ends. Until then, we each strive to do our part. Yes, whenever I find it hard to persevere, I remind myself that at least one of 'us' is pushing through beyond my awareness, and I should get up and do the same.

I can still remember that night I told my ex this. Also started with sharing songs. I expressed my thoughts using Hey Brother - she said she never viewed this song from its lyrics. I tried to clarify further. She snapped at me as if I were wearing a tin foil hat and trying to convince her that aliens exist. As if I had an immoral thought, and I should be blamed for disturbing her with its evilness.

But it's just my coping mechanism - my super artificial nuclear fusion mini-sun. I'm sharing it because "you" might also find its warmth comforting and decide to build "your" own version to feel better. I'm not even imposing my mind on anyone......

When did you start writing?

I can't give an exact age, but probably somewhere around 10 years old? I still have the old "epic" stories I would write on the family pc on word 2003 (including word art for title pages and everything) on an external harddrive somewhere. They were epic tales that involved a lot of pirates because I was obsessed with Kai Meyer's Wellenläufer trilogy, and also a lot of horses. I should see if I can find them again ...

I switched from original stuff to mainly fanfic somewhere in my teens and only seriously picked up original writing again somewhere during my Masters degree. And I'm really happy that I did.

Are there different themes or genres you enjoy reading than what you write?

I'll admit I'm mainly a fantasy enjoyer, but I try to read stuff that's outside my preferred genres at least some of the time. The last book I really enjoyed in that vein was Murakami's Afterdark. I also like the occasional nonfiction. And I read a lot of children's books for work.

Is there a writer you want to emulate or get compared to often?

I recently made a post where I said if I wanted to emulate anyone it'd be KJ Charles, and I stand by that. But really, I just want to write my own stuff. It's more about the way she writes than the themes she writes, I guess.

Can you tell me a bit about your writing space?

I'm a PC girlie, so I do have a pretty good rig (mainly for gaming although ironically I mostly play a 20-year-old game rn). I'm bad at working away from my desk, so I've tried to make that as good as possible.

My desk is currently fitted into a niche in my living room because my apartment is pretty small. It has coloured LED strings on the wall behind it as well as a pinboard just for aesthetic purposes. On the wall beside it is one of my great treasures, which is a woodcut piece of a windswept tree by an artist from the baltic sea. He's lovely and I own several of his pieces.

I have a Keychron K8 mechanical keyboard with some dupe botanical keycaps, which I wouldn't miss for the world. It is so nice to type on.

Colourwise, the setup is very dark green.

I'd love to have a standing desk, and I am currently looking into it, but it's a bit of a problem with how my desk is located, so we'll see. Maybe I'll wait until I'm finally able to move into the house, but that might be years yet.

What's your most effective way to muster up a muse?

Music mostly. There's just something about a good song that gets the creative juices flowing.

Are there any recurring themes in your writing? Do they surprise you?

Home. Just home. Finding it and making it and the meaning of it as a place or the people surrounding you.

I'm not overly surprised by this, but it was a bit of an "Oh" moment, when I figured it out. I'm a very rooted person. I need to feel not just familiar but at home with the place I am in, and that very much colours my writing I think.

What is your reason for writing?

I've been telling myself stories my whole life. Sometimes getting them out into the "real" world feels like a necessity.

Is there any specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating?

Honestly, any. But I like when I feel like people actually engage with my writing. Like they mention a particular moment that happens or something.

How do you want to be thought about by your readers?

I'm just some guy. I would preferably always like to be just some guy to others. I personally don't think much about the authors when reading. I don't know if others do.

What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?

I honestly don't know. Tell me?

How do you feel about your own writing?

Warm and fuzzy. Writing is a hobby to me, and one I enjoy greatly. I like reading what I've written.

When you write, are you influenced by what others might enjoy reading, or do you write purely for yourself, or a mix of both?

Nope. Again, this is my hobby. I write for myself. If others like it, that makes me so happy. But it's not a necessary component for this, the same way it isn't with cooking or gardening.

Met a very nice older lady when heading to college today, we met because of her needing help finding her stop ( to which I found out much later when heading to work rn was for a house she was interested in ) , and went our separate ways after since her stop was way ahead of mine . An hour and a half later when class finished and was on the bus I noticed her there , but didn't bother her incase , and when getting off that same bus and her asking the bus driver if this was the correct stop and him confirming that it was, realized we were heading the same way back, and I asked her if she was able to make it on time to the place she needed to be at and said she did! She made it to the house she was hoping to checking out , and she'd asked me if when I'd gotten on and I had told her a i had gotten on a while ago after finishing my class, to which she asked what I was going to major in , and I told her i was going to be studying funeral services, and she'd asked me why and I had said because of my curiosity of the human body, and later if I was scared of seeing dead bodies , I responded with no since I've seen some before, and that I was more so curious than scared , with me seeing it as just another thing in life we can't stop , and her telling me that it's a very good way of me to see it in that light, asked my classes and told her math and bio , and said that she loved doing bio , and remembered dissecting sheep brains and eyes, to which proceeds to her asking me if I knew what a neardeath experience was , and I tried to explain to her , and she's like I think that's what I've gone through before , she said that when she was younger she had she'd gone to swimming and the guy that was trying to flirt with her did something to her ( I can't recall what it was ) , and that's when she started heading down in the water, and she said she has chronic anxiety, but at that moment, it's like it was gone, that the experience she had at best described was orgasmic , which I found kinda funny ngl because of how she explained it, but she said she felt everything around her , and remembers it to this day very vividly. She also mentioned about her having a stroke right as she was born, causing her to be very sensitive and have very week bones, but when she said sensitive she meant also with people and their emotions and such, proceeding to say ( what shocked me the most during our conversation honestly) was that I was very sensitive, and I'm left like, wtfff in my head because of that single sentence , and said right after that I must've gone through something similar because she could tell that I was also prone to sensitivity with emotions of those around ( I can't remember correctly that's why none of it is verbatim) and I said I didn't think I had gone through anything of the sorts to be able to feel all that and proceeded to ask where my parents were born , and I said México, and said that's probably why , because of the culture and such , saying that they always put their children first , because I know for sure that's what my mom and dad had done for us ( me and my siblings ) 4 since the moment we were born, to put us first. After that the bus came and said that it was nice to talk to me and all I could do was smile at her. After we got off I was behind her for a bit and until I saw my bus was going to be here a bit earlier I started speed walking, and when crossing the streets a bit later that is when I didn't see her anymore. I never got her name, she had a accent to her that made it soothing to hear her talk if that makes sense, and was very prone to trying to step on anywhere but the leaves when heading to the next bus because of her shoes being made for interviews and such and not for getting all muddied (?) up , and I had also forgotten to ask how she was rescued from drowning either , but it was nice seeing how even if for a bit , our life's collided for a short while , and for that , I am grateful .

1. The thing that got you hooked on hockey

STORY TIME: i moved to canada, just outside of Hockey Capital (Toronto) when I was 9 years old (am 23 rn). so you'd think that i'd have been into hockey since i moved, right, considering that i was surrounded by leafs fans and like a good chunk of guys in my classes growing up were hockey boys?

DEAD WRONG.

all the guys ever cared about are the stats. so i wasn't too too interested in hockey. but i somehow absorb a lil too much info about hockey and the leafs in general but i never got /into/ the sport until my best friend lucy got into hockey like in february/march 2023. the irony is that lucy is from the uk and that's who got me into hockey: not any of the hockey boys I grew up having a crush on (bold of my family and friends to assume i got into hockey to impress a guy lol), not any of the hockey boys I went to high school with and was on good terms with. but my British friend (she’s a real one for it). And Tbf it’s because she talked more about the vibes first before she went into talking about the stats. im not a math person so the stats were like flying over my head. but she sends me videos of their interviews and game highlights and talks about them and i'm like... aight okay let me give this hockey thing a chance.

ngl i've been eyeing the hischier premier heritage jersey... either that or the black and white jersey one, though i'm leaning more towards the first one.

who else but nico hischier? tbh i can't even remember how i first heard about him. but i swear it must be all the gif sets i kept seeing when i started following more and more hockey blogs around april/may 2023? then i watched a few of his interviews and was endeared; thought he was cute and a good captain. but what REALLY sold me was when i found out that his birthday is on january 4, which is two days before mine. i was like "oh cool, a fellow capricorn" bc at that point, i'm pretty sure all the hockey players i keep seeing on my dash had birthdays in april and may, so to see a capricorn hockey player i was like... okay okay. so that's also the story behind my tag for him which is "my cap(tain) and fellow cap(ricorn) <3" if anyone was ever curious. then i read up on him; found out he was drafted first overall in 2017 and i just really liked his vibes as a captain and a player, and decided "yep, that's my guy".

5. A pairing that deserves more fic

ooh this is hard but ngl... kailer yamamoto x connor mcdavid. HEAR ME OUT: yes, i know yamo is no longer with the oilers (rip but he seems happier and less stressed out in seattle, so go have fun, king <3) but when i discovered this pairing when i was reading rpf, i was confused at first but i was VIBING! there was this fic i read on ao3 and it hasn't been updated but the premise was that kailer was a single dad, but no one on the team knows except for like one other person. and connor only finds out that kailer's got a kid when he goes into kailer's apartment to drag him to a team bonding. oof, can't wait to read more tbh. but the fic that really sold me on the pairing was connor having a crush on kailer, who had no idea connor was into men (he thought connor and lauren were dating, when they were really just besties) and i was HERE FOR IT.

tl;dr: kailer x connor will be my rarepair that needs more fics.

6. Your favourite on-ice moment

has to be when jack tackles aho back during the playoffs. this lived rent-free in my brain and i was like.... huh... maybe i should check out the new jersey devils if they got a guy who tackles people like this.

I'm coming back to add to the language headcanons because I have more thoughts/revisions.

-I'm keeping the headcanon that if he was to know at least one extra language aside from English, it would be Mandarin, but if he knew two extra languages then I'm actually gonna place more bets on something like French. Since his father seems to have an inclination for Western things judging by the architecture of his house, the food he eats, and the car he drives, I would think his father would make it that Akashi is fluent in two Eastern languages and two Western languages to make it even. I personally think French would really suit Akashi. Maybe he might study Korean in his free time, though. He pegs me as the type to learn new languages when he's bored.

-Now, back to English, I would think after Extra Game when Akashi is smack-talking Team Jabberwock in English, Kagami prods Akashi about it later. And when he realizes Akashi is also fluent, their friendship strengthens a lot more. Now, whenever they talk, they switch back and forth pretty frequently between English and Japanese. Sometimes, if Kagami can't find the word he's looking for in Japanese, he'll switch to English mid-sentence and then switch back to Japanese, and Akashi finds it so amusing.

-Another thing is that Akashi either speaks pretty formal or pretty neutral English and doesn't dip into casual English expressions the way Kagami does, so he's not up to date on current English slang the way Kagami is, especially because Kagami still keeps in touch with old friends from LA. So when Kagami says shit like "that's lit" or "let him cook," Akashi kinda looks at him like ❓️❓️❓️ cuz what is being lit, and who is cooking what? Kagami then has to sit him down and teach him all the American English slang he knows. Akashi tries to use some of it while he's being taught, immediately cringes at the way the words sound on his tongue, and vows to never use any slang again.

-Oh, and I bet in Teiko when they went to Hawaii, Akashi was the designated translator along with maybe Midorima. Saving these basketball dorks in their team by reading the airport signs and everything.

-Akashi probably watches a lot of foreign films, too. I remember in the Replace chapters, Akashi said his favorite actress was Audrey Hepburn, and in an interview with Fujimaki (or maybe it was also Replace Plus idr), it was said that Akashi's favorite movie was The Godfather. So not only does he consume a lot of foreign films, but he seems to prefer a lot of old foreign classics. This makes it tough for him to have movie nights with the other peeps in the Teiko gang (cuz let's be honest AoKise are NAWT watching those old films a lot of them can sometimes be very slow-paced), but the Rakuzan folks don't mind watching those kinds of films.

-Before traveling to another country, Akashi will learn common words and phrases in that country's native language so he can get around and communicate with locals. He likes having the independence to navigate by himself and also learn more about the country when he's there.

Anyway, I'm out rn, and I'm not tryna drain my battery using my data, so I'll stop here. Add more headcanons to mine if you like!

Random Akashi headcanon that's been bouncing around my head for days, but obviously we know from Extra/Last Game that he's fluent in English, right? I have a headcanon that he's actually trilingual at the very least. Because he's the heir to a big business, I would assume Akashi has been taught to be at least conversational, if not fluent, in one or a couple other languages. Preferably the languages of the countries his father does business in. I would assume Masaomi does business in neighboring countries to Japan, so Akashi would probably know either Mandarin, Korean, or both.

The candle pokemon is immediately hugged by the small boy, who tears up and thanks Ingo over and over again. His son may have no interest in being a trainer, but he's ever grateful that the boy is willing to handle pokemon.

Litwick is seen cuddling him throughout the home, deeply attached. No one dares bully him, knowing that the terrifying trainer Ingo is his father. Though, the do politely ask him to stop describing different types of train cars and their functions. This upsets him deeply. Ingo and Emmet both sit down and nod at his descriptions to cheer him up, despite already having this information present in their brains. Ingo 100% has dressed his son in some of his clothes he kept from when he was younger and taken more photos the necessary because he found him so adorable. His child(ren) are the most precious thing to him alongside his brother and his partner. He refuses to miss a single thing when it comes to them. He still does occasionally, but feels awful the entire time.

Emmet's daughters have no interest in trains and keep harassing him for battles. He shows them no mercy, seeing their potential. They often pop up separately on his Super Line or together on the Super Multi Line to challenge him and Ingo. It's always evenly matched, and he loves it. His children love battling just as much as he does, and his competitive spirit clearly was inherited by them.

He gifts them a Joltik each, but only one of them actually trained theirs. The other kept the electric spider as a pet and companion. He was a bit saddened by this, having bred both to be perfect for competitive battling, but he can't very well make them use what they don't want to. He is verrrrry happy to see her Joltik scuttle about with a cute accessory attached onto them. He giggles when they steal a battery before running back her.

It came as no surprise when that daughter came to him with big eyes, telling him of her plans to become a contest star with the Joltik he had gifted her. While he may not of had that in mind when breeding for them, he is excited to see a new use for his beloved bug types. He helps her pick out an outfit, practise poses, and for interviews. By the end, she feels properly trained to tackle a contest. If only they had any in Unova. She cries for a week, and he brings he sweets in a desperate attempt to cheer her up.

The other is determined to become champion of Unova and is constantly wondering around debating battle strategies and teams. Emmet helps her along, finding her passion endearing. She's constantly bouncing ideas off him and battling him whenever he's available to test them out. Eventually, she declares that she is going to take on the gym challenge. Emmet cheers her on as she goes through each town. You know he brought Ingo, her sister, her other parent, Elesa, and her cousin to support her as she finally reaches the elite four. It's a bit embarrassing for her to see her entire family watching her, but she's happy to show off just how powerful the Joltik, now Galvantula, her father had gifted her had become.
