i was thinking about the wisconsin incident* in the shower today so ive spent the afternoon doing geography quizzes on sporcle
#*once a couple years ago i was feeding aurora#and her food and water were in my bedroom at the time. my carpeted bedroom.#because special diet + multi cat household#so. there was a plastic placemat underneath it#and all the plastic placemats we have are from when i was a kid#you know. abcs dinosaurs#all the presidents (up to dubya)#and this map of the us#that i never looked at because why would you look at a placemat#but i see the placemat as im giving aurora her dinner. and i see wisconsin. east of minnesota#and im sure dear reader youre like yeah. where else would wisconsin be#well. i thought. that wisconsin.#was much smaller. and was between indiana and ohio#the great lakes would be much wider to accommodate this#and illinois was a lot farther north. because i know its on lake michigan#but that most of the west side of lake mi abutted minnesota#because they have big lake energy#and wisconsin has always had more rust belt energy to me#their culture felt more foreign. like the eastern midwest instead of the western midwest#anyway. apologies to all my cheesy friends in the badger state

i think totk improved on botw in a lot of ways but i also still had the same issues w it that i did w botw and it had new issues as well (the inventory was a nightmare, armor upgrade reqs were ridiculous, too many collectible-based quests esp the fucking hudson signs)
but my biggest complaint was that even with a storyline that i personally found more interesting, there is just zero connection to it at all. botw and totk feel like revenge for skyward sword being so emotional, linear, and story-driven (iirc miyamoto was not happy with its direction and he and aonuma (?) were just undoing each other's work which is partly why the game suffers from repetition)
so now we get zero emotional attachment to anything that's going on except in cutscenes that aren't even required and have no visible impact on link in any way. hardly any of the sidequests feel meaningful, and the ones that could have been always seemed to fall short. the npcs seem weirdly chipper about the gloom spreading, the ground splitting open, and the earth levitating into the sky. many of them that should remember you just... don't, for some reason, like there's so little development in any of link's relationships with any of these people, zelda included, as if he hasn't even existed for the past eight years between games, like what was with the hateno village retconning
my personal favorite quests were awakening the fairy fountains (felt like classic zelda and i liked that it made a permanent impact on the world, even rewarding you with a permanent new rendition of epona's song at every stable), giving all the bubbul gems to koltin (you have to go out of your way to talk to his brother kilton to get the full kinda bittersweet ending and it's a rare touching moment imo), and the balloon thing with rhondson and hudson's daughter (i liked that it actually expanded on a questline from botw and it was also bittersweet), also i liked penn and the newspaper questline
the biggest improvement imo was the shrines, the puzzles were so much more interesting with so many possible solutions, and the temples/bosses were so much better than the divine beasts and stupid scourges
but idk i just... feel like i wanted more from it. to me the story is just as important as the gameplay and tbh in both games link feels so detached from the plot, like it's just happening around him, not to him. and you can argue that in the older games they didn't explore his emotional state or w/e but the narratives were tight enough that you felt immersed anyway, and could project your own feelings onto him. these games actively thwart your attempts to humanize the silent protagonist bc he's more emotional about fucking cooking than about being manipulated by a creepy puppet of the woman he's been with for 8+ years at this point (should've made puppet zelda a boss again smh) or seeing memories of people dying horribly
all of which is too far spaced out between, idk, grinding for lionel parts
with the world as big as it is, nothing in it is allowed to be too big and i'm concerned that this is just what zelda games are going to be like from now on. i hope the next project announced will be something completely different.
#loz#having played every single-player zelda game i'm not really a purist#bc every other zelda game is a ''black sheep'' lol#so i like it when each game is something different#botw was just such a departure but it felt big and new and exciting#totk is bigger but that's the problem imo. there's just nothing that new or threatening.#once you get used to the depths it was just kind of a slog to map out the entire thing#and there's nothing as scary as the guardians wandering around#i honestly think the depths should have been smaller + more concentrated#or more like traditional dungeons#basically i have a lot of Thoughts abt zelda and if you read all of this i have kissie for u mwah

one thing i was not at all prepared for about having to go without glasses for a week is how the navigating my environment itself isn't a huge barrier--i have to be really slow and careful and it's annoying, but it hasn't actually stopped me from doing things including in the 'god this is going to be a hassle, i don't even want to start' way--but the major loss/change in sensory input as well as Oh God the HUD is Wrong is apparently a huge depression trigger. replacements cannot happen soon enough
#moogletalks#second half reminds me of when i tried contacts for a few weeks as a teenager and Dear Reader I Hated It#the contact care part aside it felt so SO bad to walk around places that aren't my bed without glasses on my face#and it turns out that feeling is the same whether i can or can't see while i'm wearing them!#i started wearing glasses full-time when i was eight and they're part of my brain and body map now#it used to throw me for a loop a lot when people talk about only wearing theirs part of the time; just because Wait but Your HUD#i thought maybe it was just a 'well i guess they must not need them as [often/heavily] as i to for daily life'#'i wouldn't be so freaked out by the idea of going about my day without mine if i weren't worried about not having them when i need them'#and tbh i think this kinda puts the kibosh on that because my vision *is* shitawful and things *are* more difficult without correction#My Life Would Not Be Unaffected on a Logistical Level#but i feel *considerably* less visceral OH SHIT FUCK THIS DERAILS EVERYTHING about it than many many many other smaller things#it's just kinda oh. well. alright then let's go#in fact i wish i could take a lot more things in stride like this one emotionally lmao#but the lack of the glasses themselves feels exactly as horribly wrong as it did over a decade ago#glasses can come with all sorts of fucking annoying problems and hassles to deal with!#but given the choice of affordable; sturdy; well-fitted glasses with the right prescription etc#i would 100% choose that over unassisted vision#including the increased peripheral vision i'd get from not wearing frames#braintag#adventures in mental illness

gringos discover miami (real)
#I watched the vid and yes it is actually about miami but they keep specifying Doral which#Is Techincally its own city. but no one really treats the smaller cities in dade county like that#they’re more like neighborhoods#like if it’s not homestead and it’s not Ft. Lauderdale your address is going to say miami on it Most of the time#there are certain locations where they will specificy more often though. the more expensive the real estate the more likely they are to#specify. cause rich people. it’s a clout thing.#like oh yes I live in coral gables~ heehee yes I have an condo in key biscayne as well~#but if you put in ur zip code for shipping it will give you the option for miami or the More Specific Location™️#cause if you go by what maps say the vast majority of people here do not live in Miami including me#and yet that’s what my address says. the city limits really make no sense at all#because it’s all just an endless slab of concrete anyway#with no real difference till you hit the Weird zone that is between homestead proper and the edge of the city#though that’s rapidly being developed. I’m getting off topic#also the vid is unnecessarily dramatic#long story short. lots of boats. airport nearby. the average citizen is a poor immigrant. not hard to figure things out

the new incline map reminds me of the gondola map from vanguard, but i can also see why people think of the map summit from the BO series as well.

Hey queen. You seem v knowledgeable about pro-Palestinian charities. Would you mind making a post or giving some info on which ones are really effective and honest abt their work? I've been hearing some problematic things about UNRWA, and Save the Children seems to be doing very little (as far as I am informed). I donate to PCRF and MAP, but don't know any other, smaller orgs that may also need more awareness? Thanks ♥
hello, thanks for sending this in. so i've been trying to find smaller orgs for palestine that are specifically for helping gaza, but the issue is not much aid is being let in. PCRF is a really good org in my opinion, I'd always donate to them regardless.
There's also the Palestine Museum, which does really great cultural preservation work.
Palestine Legal is a legal aid group that helps palestinian and palestinian advocacy facing legal challenges.
Palestine Action is a direct action group that helps do disruptive protests.
Samidoun helps palestinian prisioners around the world and keeps and eye on them.
Within Our Lifetime is an NYC based palestinian led organization.
Palestinian Youth Movement is a favorite for Turtle Island led Palestinian resistance.
Palestine Feminist Collective is a Turtle Island feminist movement that works to spread culture and information.
Good Shephard Collective seems to be doing good work in Bethlehem as well.
I would mostly look for mutual aid groups for people from Gaza if you want to donate to them. Aya Ghanamah retweets mutual aid groups a lot.
I might share more groups in a second reblog after I hear back on best ways to help them.

"basim isnt a warrior so be careful" is a funny way of saying "we didnt give a fuck about the combat so all of your controls feel unresponsive"
#parrying in all of the other games in this era were fine. what happened?#also this is basically an extended dlc and you can feel it in the writing. its such a nothingburger#its a stealth game where if you try to nudge your character they take 5 extra movements forward and get spotted immediately. very cool.#the parkour sucks and is now more restricted#what origins and odyssey did that felt so good was being able to pick your spot and go from there#ppl complain that there werent Any stealth elements but thats just how You decide to play it babey#i miss the Actual freeclimbing ability as in i'm not railroaded into using fucking handholds on long climbs. the parkour is simply not good#enough to do that nor is it interactive enough for me to want to be forced to do that#i'd like the setting more if the freerunning and climbing felt better ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#its next to impossible to get into a good grove. even to get one clean line without randomly jumping off or getting pulled to an unrelated#wall/object. it probably felt better in origins/odyssey because it was so much more open but still closed when in fortresses and such#also? the chain assassination suck. not nearly as fun as being able to chain your own actions#but all of this makes sense when you know that 1. this was originally a valhalla dlc and 2. it was made with the intention of being#ported to ipad. of all fucking things.#whatever i guess im just waiting for the next era cuz thats when the games end up being good again#pretty bummed. especially bc i played thru all of valhalla and didnt like it and am now going through basically an ac1 remake pasted onto#valhalla assets.#and tbh there isnt enough to do in a map this large even though its smaller. ik other people dont like fetch quests but it at least gives me#a reason to go to other areas where like. i havent even been outside the city bc it hasnt set me there. i dont want to just aimlessly wander#i have a lot of issues w this game but i'll shut up now

saw a post in one of my fb groups this woman is in the early stages of planning a trip to england and said they were thinking about staying in leeds and then "taking day trips to surrounding areas" like stonehenge and london. and the comments were all uhhh leeds is northern those places are southern and she claimed google maps told her it takes 25 minutes to get from leeds to stonehenge.. 😭😭
#it talks#she also said she wanted to see ireland and wales too like girl how long are you staying? do you realize ireland is a separate island?#and she said she chose leeds bc on the map it looks central?? ok even if true central doesnt mean easily accesible to all those placee#england is a lot smaller than the us but its still a whole ass country

PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT JUNCOS IT'S A NEED
YOU’VE ACTIVATED MY TRAP CARD!!!
YOU’LL REGRET THIS!!!!!!!
Okay so dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) are one of the most fascinating and overlooked species of songbird in the US because they are, generally, fairly plain looking and common. They’ve been called Snowbirds throughout the Eastern US and they’re often disparaged because spotting a junco means it’s about to snow. However, this is often not true because many places have resident populations (meaning they live there year round) and they are subject to a sort of confirmation bias—you’ve heard they’re a winter-only bird so you’ll only notice them during winter, similar to American robins that are known as a “first sign of spring” bird even though their seasonal movements are very complex and they often have resident populations.
Onto why they are FASCINATING, or at least why I think so (and I am correct always obviously) there are many, many different subspecies of dark-eyed juncos. And we have NO IDEA how many there actually are! It is highly debated and depending on who you ask there’s anywhere from 14-15 recognized subspecies, with 2-3 different large groups and 3-4 smaller ones. I’ve even heard people say as little as 9 and as many as 17. I have watched seasoned professionals with tenure get up in arms about this. It’s incredible.
Here’s an example of some!
Read Top to Bottom/Left to Right: Rocky Mountain (Cassiar) Junco (cismontanus), Pink-sided Junco (mearnsi), White-winged Junco (aikeni), Slate-colored Junco (hyemalis), Gray-headed Junco(caniceps), Red-backed Junco(dorsalis), Oregon Junco(oreganus)
If you live in the east of the us, the little guy in the middle (slate-colored junco) is going to be the one you see the most, and if you live in the west it’s the bottom right (Oregon junco). Usually. Very broad, and there are many subspecies within the Oregon group that often get (incorrectly, but understandably) labeled oreganus when they are likely something else.
It’s extremely difficult to identify junco subspecies in field and without particularly great photos most people are left shrugging and putting them in slate-colored or Oregon groups.
This range map is incredibly simplified
And THIS range map is. Well. Yeah. Don’t get me started on intergrades.
There’s several subspecies within the Oregon group and a large, unresolved debate about whether or not the Oregon group is actually its own species separate from slate-colored, with several subspecies.
Their systematics is a MESS (loving) and we’ve just recently moved the Guadalupe Junco to be it’s own species!
MY research has centered around this
You see this little guy right here?
This absolute little stinker that took me forever to photograph because they were being scared by hawks?
Yeah, that’s a Cassiar Junco.
Probably my greatest, rarest observation to date. And most people would write it off!
(Not sharing downloaded image bc location stuff lol. When I say rare I mean RARE.)
The Rocky Mountain Junco, also known as the Cassiar Junco, (Junco hyemalis cismontanus) is a presumed subspecies within the slate-colored group.
Depending on who you ask! Some believe it to be a subspecies, some believe it to be an intergrade between the slate-colored junco and Oregon junco, and others believe slate-colored and Oregon juncos to be distinct species making the Cassiar junco a hybrid. I will not give my opinion here yet since this is, technically, research I am currently doing but…let’s say I am observing breeding behaviors for a reason :)
They are incredibly rare, with most sightings taking place in the Northwest. Though they are spotted across much of the lower 48 a lot of these sightings are thought to be mistaken identity.
Looking at eBird range maps they fall within 0-2% sighting frequency, and all but disappear during summer months.
Is this because they are mistaken for slate-colored and written off? Or are they truly this rare? And if so, why?
There’s so many unsolved mysteries about this group of forgotten birds and especially the Cassiar junco.
Recently I’ve been looking into the research in gonadal growth delay in migrant populations vs resident populations and oh my god I could infodump a whole post on that but I’ll spare you. For now. If you express further interest there will be no saving you. It’s so cool man (said like siren song)
I am incredibly excited to focus my field research on them this winter (especially now that I have…connections) and I am very fortunate to live in a place that seems to get them more often than others.
Three cheers for Cassiar!
#ornithology#birding#taxonomy#dark eyed junco#deju#deju systematics#junco hyemalis#junco hyemalis cismontanus#cismontanus#this really is my point of no return tbh
