Fun fact: I have an ancestor who abandoned his birthright to move to the US...so he could be closer to rocks and become a gentleman miner in his spare time. Not a subsistence miner, sixteen-tons style, mind you, so I know this was not a decision born out of economic desperation, but a hobbyist miner who used his legitimate business to fund his rock fascination, and if collectively delighting over examining the ancestral rock collection at the family reunion is not relatable, then I suspect there may not be enough autism in your family.

was kinda thinking about this when I saw Renee Rapp live recently-- I didn't know her visual vibe, I'd heard a few songs here and there but I hadn't really *seen* her, and her attire at Osheaga was really casual, a jersey (baseball/basketball?) and slacks. And that was so amazing! I couldn't help thinking, the work Billie Eilish has done for how women in pop music are allowed to dress is incredible. Seeing her up there all comfortable you just know that Billie walked in her oversized tops so that Renee in her slacks could run; Billie walked through all the critcisms about how she dressed slobbily and having to assert that she didn't owe anyone a display of skin, so that Renee could be comfortable and unquestioned running up and down the catwalk in front of 10,000 people. How iconic.

And I don't think we even realised at the time how much something as simple as letting Billie dress the way she as a (then-) 17-year-old teenager dressed, could end up meaning for a future generation of women in music.

Obviously there is still way to go, there were weirdos complaining about how 'plain' Dua Lipa's Glastonbury outfit was this year (in 2024!!), l have to ask, are you at Paris Fashion Week?? She is the musical HEADLINER of an entire day of music at one of the biggest music festivals in the world, and you can't grant her the space to exist as an artist, you have to moan about her dress not being excitingly revealing enough. There's work to do, it's still dismal out there. But the space Billie Eilish has created for a most ordinarily-dressed woman popstar is still heartening.

OC-tober Day 18: Role Swap

Emri, Thief King of Nara-En: Emri wearing so much color is just wrong. Breaks my brain. Blacks greys and browns only for him! Dark blue if he feels really spicy.

But if he wants to be taken seriously in Gil's time and society, accessories and colorful clothing are kind of a must. This is as understated as he could go in his position.

How does he become Thief King? No idea, but definitely not on purpose. Also he's just plain bad at it. The city we're trying to save is doomed, sorry. Emri couldn't uncover a conspiracy if it gave him a lap dance.

Gilfaeth, Post-Apocalyptic Plague Doctor: I can live with the white hair, but I draw the line at Gil without his piercings. He will find some gold to put in his ears if it kills him.

Gil living through Emri's trauma though... that, uh, that's gonna go poorly. He does not have Emri's near infinite capacity for forgiveness. Emri has some pent-up anger, sure - but Gil is fucking furious. He will tear down the system that betrayed him with his teeth if he has to, and fuck anyone who gets in his way.

In his own story, he lived a hard but overall good life, made plenty of connections, had so many people he cared about, so many things to hold on to. He has none of that here, and it destroys him.

I really have to hand it to Remedy for how they handle their moments of "the player does something while Old Gods of Asgard plays in the background". The first time around it was pretty simple, first time they did it. Fight off hordes of enemies with Barry on stage while the music plays.

The Ashtray Maze is something just so special. You have the moments of the great gameplay fighting off hiss, but for the most part its just taking in and being awestruck by the Oldest House moving and shifting around you, as the song guides you through the maze. I greatly appreciate the fact they made the arcade game in AWE so you could go revisit it whenever you wanted to.

And then we have the two different moments in Alan Wake 2. The musical number, a moment of absurdity and surrealism amongst all of the horror. Plus I love the little bit of fourth wall breaking when Alan sings near the end "can you help me out?" as you then go to the plot board.

And then we have Dark Ocean Summoning, very reminiscent of the Children of the Elder Gods sequence from the the first Alan Wake game. But you have two people helping you, Casey and Estevez, calling out enemy locations, destroying darkness shields and supplying ammo. With the Old Gods of Asgard right there with you this time. The stakes just seemed so much higher in that fight, so much more tension about what was about to happen.

Just such unique pieces all centered around a rather simple idea. Love them for it.

if i were to write a story with the same boogey apocalypse mechanics would that be okay? i would be using mine and my friends cubitos for the characters, and each individual role would be suited to cubito lore on our server (rather then fitting them into the roles you crafted for the life series guys)

i do think its kinda funny when i see someone in the year of our lord 2024 talk about vocal synth music like its all gone downhill since like 2010 because like dont get me wrong i love a good niconicodouga-ass 2008 ass vocaloid joint BUT also like. the past couple years have had the most fascinatingly creative and expressive uses of vocal synthesizers ive ever heard in my life DJFSKHJDFS dont write it all off just yet!!
