a story about hubris

so several weeks ago i bought a heavy duty external battery because i'm doing this thing called Just In Case. the Just In Case philosophy is like when you say "everything is going to be fine" as you're searching reddit for "best water purification tablets" and "how long are cans of sardines stay good for" so i have a box of things that are there to satisfy that specific mental illness. what i do not have for this box is a heavy duty battery i could plug something into, like a fridge. i've been looking at this battery for over a year and when it got listed 40% off i went for it. and in the fine print it had "PLUS two 100 watt solar panels" two! free! solar panels! genuinely free! i could not believe my eyes (if ten million fireflies etc) and i thought my gosh. i love... solar energy. i love sunlight. that's great. that's really cool. in fact i have a solar panel strapped to my hiking pack so i can recharge my little external phone recharger while i hike. and they're giving me two. TWO! golly.

zoom forward to yesterday. i have not forgotten about the battery, nor is it in my mind when i get home and a fedex truck pulls up and flags me down. to be clear, this has never happened to me in my life. i did not know fedex people could or would desire to talk to you. the fedex guy says he'll be right there, and he's got something for me. woowee! fifteen minutes pass. the man backs into my driveway and says "i don't have it but it's coming" and i'm like hey that's fine i'm actually not expecting anything? and he gets a big smile and goes "then someone got you something big and cool. early christmas present?" wowee zowee! exciting. he tells me it will be on the next truck. i start dreaming about what it is and no small part of me is still trapped in that childhood dream that someone will one day get me a horse. which would certainly ship by fedex.

TEN HOURS PASS. it is now 9pm. i am ensconced at home having a nice time after watching some shows with friends. trap is a really fun movie by the way. the doorbell rings. am i answering that? absolutely not! i turn all the lights on and like put the chain on the door and go "wh-who is it" but there is no one there. a van is pulling away. a regular. a regular van. and then i see it. a box. a huge fucking box. and it says "SOLAR PANEL" on it in truly comical fashion. a solar panel. two of them. these are not solar panels you strap to your pack while you hike. these are the solar panels they put on houses. and i have two of them.

so a couple things to round this out: 1) this is why you always read the dimensions of things you buy even when you're pretty sure they're supposed to be a certain size 2) a week ago when i told my dad "and it comes with two solar panels--the rigid kind, not the folding kind, i don't like the folding kind" that was clinical grade diagnosable hubris 3) what have i done and more specifically what do i do with these

I can barely begin to express how much the course of my life has been altered because of a 40 minute highlight video done by @jelloapocalypse and friends riffing over a 20 year old sky pirate game.

I made an off-handed comment after watching it together with two of my longtime friends, about how much I wish I had what Vyrsa had, and one of those friends STRAIGHT-UP TELLS ME that her and her wife have been crushing on me for a while.

The feeling was mutual, though I'd been of course hesitant to even hint at it.

Anyway now a few months later, we're a thruple, and we decided to honor the genesis of our relationship by cosplaying as the trio that made it a reality for my 30th birthday!

Listen, I love Fiddlestan as much as the next guy, but where did we start getting the idea Ford was cold and dismissive towards Fidds during their time working on the portal???

I could totally be wrong because I haven't read every single GF related thing (hell, my journals aren't decoded because I'm a slacker), but like??? The first time he saw him, he bought him his favorite snacks *and* a whole ass banjo and said he'd make it his mission that Fiddleford would be comfortable in his home.

They go adventuring together and talk about things like fashion trends and the future and go stargazing.

Ford is *so* happy when Fiddleford returns that he hugs him immediately. Abd then he feels bad that Fiddleford feels bad about his failing marriage that he throws him a holiday party even though he doesn't celebrate and hates the holidays honestly. And he put on Fiddlefords favorite song (which he despises and honestly? ME TOO FORD. I HAVE BEEF WITH THAT SONG) and drank seemingly spiked eggnog with him despite not usually liking to drink. So that he could make Fiddleford feel better.

He also just openly adores everything Fiddleford does. Maybe it's only in his journals. You could argue he doesn't say it out loud but, like, he exclusively describes him as impressive all of the time-

And I get where it's coming from in like a "oh he's a workaholic who has the pressure of Bill breathing down his neck that he has to be working on the portal 24/7." And like yeah, but in the pages he's a workaholic he's a workaholic practically begging Fiddleford to stay up with him because he loves working along side him. Fiddleford and him work *together.*

Like the page where they're sorta fighting with each other because Ford wants to work more its not "leave me alone Fiddleford, I have to do this" it's "hey! How come you won't stay up with me! Ugh this is so unfair that you're going to bed even though you know I plan to continue working for another hour."

I'm just saying if Fiddleford wanted to cuddle, I imagine Ford's response would be "Oh! Awesome, I love spending time with him 🥰🥰🥰" but he'd just end up using Fidds' back as a table for his studies. Or they'd do that thing where one of them is working on a desk and they sit on one chair in each other's arms.

And, while we're here, realistically? Emotionally stunted, slapped by more women than He's dated, "I can't cry in front of people, and the only thing I'm good for is my fists." Stanley Pines??? He's not cuddling shit. He's got that toxic masculinity ingrained into him. It doesn't matter how incredibly touch starved he is, cuddling is too emotionally intimate and "girly" for him. Honestly if Fiddleford tried to cuddle him he'd probably throw him in a headlock because he's also been on the streets for years now with people constantly trying to attack him.

And I'm not saying this to diss on Fiddlestan. Again, I *like* Fiddlestan! But when I read "Ford could never appreciate him like Stan could" I don't understand it.

They so clearly bonded well together, and if Ford truly was being an asshole (or not an asshole, but just generally unpleasant even when he wasn't possessed) the whole time, I doubt Fiddleford would've stayed. Nostalgia and physical attraction can only get you so far, and Fidds is already facing the horrors in Gravity Falls, Stanford has to be a hell of an amazing person to make someone want to stay. Like, he's a grown adult. Sure he really wanted to impress Ford and allotted himself to be "the tech guy to Ford's smarts" but if he wanted to leave, he could've. And there didn't seem to much keeping him there. Especially when he was having doubts on the portal.

The thing about HotD is that it while it absolutely minimizes the agency and ambition of both Rhaenyra and Alicent, this is specifically used to glorify Rhaenyra and frame her as righteous while condemning Alicent and framing her lacking. That's the key difference in both their textual portrayals that has directly led to 90% of the fandom hailing Rhaenyra as the second coming of Christ while spewing the most hateful vitriol at Alicent just for existing. But y'all are not prepared for that conversation.

it’s actually so wild to me that this fairly quirky YA type show gave both of its main characters deaths that can, in one way or another, solidly be considered hate crimes. they were both flat out murdered as a result of being A) gay and effeminate or B) brown (south asian, specifically) and you could argue whether or not those kids thought of it that way in the moment or whatever but the bottom line is that they would not have been in the situations that killed them if they weren’t of their respective minorities. like legitimately that is a ballsy choice for this kind of netflix show, let alone for the two Main Characters, and i respect it big time
