I know this is about Catholicism, and there is a lot of Americanism in the notes as well as people saying "christianity isnt like this" but I have a distinct memory of being about 11 years old in school in England in an R.E. class and having a very religious christian teacher tell all of us kids "if you don't believe in God and you are correct, then when you die you're just worm food. (BLM or what is happening in Palestine for example) When she was asked to speak about what is happening in Palestine, she made a comment on her close friends that left me annoyed with her. It annoyed me bc I was such a huge fan of her and the way she said that her voice as a white woman wouldn’t matter to the conversation of Gaza made me mad. Just educating someone about something as tragic as what is happening is so important, she has a huge platform and her voice could reach more people, it can help. She can't claim to be an activist when she picks what she can and can't talk about, white privilege shit. She set the standard for herself, this is not me just hating. She said she cares about what is happening but associated with people like that Ethan guy from the H3 podcast, he's a zionist! It's so sad to know that someone I supported is just putting an act, she's performing for us and her so called activism.

Thess vs Far-Right MPs

Apparently some of the very far right-leaning Tory MPs are bitching about Suella Braverman being sacked, saying that Sunak is "turning his back on the voters who gave the Tories their majority in 2019". Which ... well, that's a stupid thing to say for a lot of reasons.

First of all, this is not what the Tory majority of 2019 was about. That shit-show was about Boris Johnson having made himself The Face Of Brexit during the run-up to the referendum, and people thinking that since he was so much for it, he could keep all the promises that he, Farage, and the ERG were making about it. (Narrator's note: they could not, and did not.)

Second of all, none of Braverman's talking points were on the table in 2019, beyond Brexit. Please keep in mind the list of things that Suella Braverman has done and said the last little while:

Calling the Human Rights Act the "Criminal Rights Act" and being a big part of the push to get the UK to leave the European Court of Human Rights.

This she did largely to fulfil her "dream and obsession" of sending refugees to Rwanda, which is very much illegal in a human rights sense.

Her entire take on refugees (or, as she puts it, "illegal migrants"). This includes: "Look, the threat of being arrested or executed for being LGBTQ is not a good reason to refugee out of a country so if you're here because your country hates gay people, we want to send you back there" (subtext: because we don't really like you people either), and "We want to be able to lock pregnant women and unaccompanied minors up for more than 72 hours if they managed to get here and we caught them".

Oh, let's not forget the recent "Multiculturalism Has Failed" thing. Lady, not only are you distinctly Not White, and also first-generation British, but you took advantage of the Erasmus programme (which used to help British people study abroad, which we can now no longer be in because fucking Brexit) and studied at the Sorbonne for years. You are a self-confessed devout Francophile. There is no way in hell you can start preaching about British values and multiculturalism having failed, you silly moo. Imagine going from an Erasmus-sponsored programme to study in France and then join the ERG, which is terrifyingly anti-EU.

She recently referred to homelessness as a "lifestyle choice", and was all for imposing fines on charities who donate tents to people sleeping rough. Thankfully none of this made it into the proposed King's Speech, but it was still very prominent in the headlines.

She's been the main force behind the continued criminalisation of protest in this country. She actively tried to get police to ban pro-Palestine protests this weekend just gone, citing "It's disrespectful to the Armistice Day events and they might damage the Cenotaph!" This despite the fact that the pro-Palestine protests agreed to not go anywhere near the Cenotaph. Anyway, the London Metropolitan Police stood their ground and refused to deny people the right to peaceful protest, and Sunak rolled his eyes and sighed but agreed that their current Human Rights Act did allow for that sort of thing, and the only people around the Cenotaph were the ultra-right, who mostly used it and the surrounding areas as a toilet as they tried to "protect" the Cenotaph from "a wave of destructive tofu-eating wokerati" (Braverman's own words to describe the left) who never actually arrived.

Which brings us to why Braverman was sacked in the first place, and the pro-Braverman MPs really should shut up when it comes to this one. See, sometimes MPs will write editorials for newspapers, stating their views. After the London Met stood their ground and let pro-Palestine protests happen in London on Armistice Day, Braverman wrote a piece for the Times about the whole thing, accusing the London Met of discriminating against "good British people" (read: the ultra-right) by being more forceful with them than with protests from "folks like Just Stop Oil etc, "lefty" causes, and calling the pro-Palestine protests "hate marches". The thing is, when MPs write editorials for the paper, they go to 10 Downing Street to get vetted, to ensure that they're not going against the party line or getting too ... erm ... confrontational, I guess? Well, Braverman's little editorial was deemed too confrontational and too much against the party line (summed up as, "I guess we can't technically prevent you from peaceful protest since we're still with the ECHR..."), so they came back to her with changes she was supposed to make to the editorial. She did not make those changes, and sent out her frothing, Trump-speak editorial as written. I don't care how pro-Braverman these MPs are, they have to understand that if you ignore a directive from your party leader and Prime Minister, your job is at risk. She fucked around one time too many, and she found out.

And yet the pro-Braverman crowd are still baying, calling the PM "Suicide Sunak" and lamenting things like Johnson being forced to resign over shit like throwing massive parties during Covid lockdown when people couldn't even attend their families' funerals. I don't know if there's enough of those to make a difference, given as how reading too much of their froth makes me sick. Which means I don't know if there's a chance that, assuming the Tories lose the next general election (2024-2025, I think? Sunak's going to try to put it off as long as possible, particularly given that he knows as much as anyone that the odds of the Tories losing the next general election are very, very good), Braverman might get the Tory party leadership after Sunak's done.

Well, if she does, I've probably got about five years of safety before I have to start really worrying because of her keen desire to throw human rights out the window in favour of extreme boomerang bigotry and the kind of hypocrisy that I can barely even describe. But I can't believe that her views are so palatable to enough of the general public to make her an actual contender for the party leadership. ...Probably because I still have some tiny shred of faith in humanity. Summary of events is at the end, but here’s what happened. Things got pretty heated between us towards the end, but that’s just how it goes ig.

They now predictably have me blocked, so I can’t access the DMs or the post about this first incident. As for what happened on Tumblr, a while back, they made a greyscale gifset with Gwen in it, and someone (iirc this someone was indeed a poc, though I don’t remember who exactly) told them that it was whitewashed, and their response was more or less just “but I did high contrast, this is impossible to do, that has to be good enough!” I decided to DM them to say “Hey, here’s how you can do greyscale gifs without whitewashing, you should go back and fix those gifs” but was ultimately ignored to my knowledge. Other people who I’ve talked to about whitewashing in their works have actually gone back and changed them, so Idk what their deal was. They just. Didn’t wanna. I thought maybe they just didn’t see it or something but… nope.

Now, as for the other incident(s), which took place off of Tumblr… A year later or so, idk how much time passed, Queen Elizabeth II dies. You may have noticed my pinned post is about people sympathizing with colonizers instead of their victims. Well, that is actually pinned because of the situation this all stemmed from.

If you’re a merthur shipper, then I doubt you’re in the Non Merthur Server, the Discord where this all took place. You probably wouldn’t find anything unsubtle on their Tumblr that indicates how they actually are, but what they chose to say there completely obliterated any hope I had for them. I have a much longer post in my drafts about what happened, but it began because I said that we shouldn’t make excuses for a colonizer. Someone in the chat was doing this (I’ll discuss that more in another post), so me and another member (who left due to the way the situation was handled by the mods) immediately corrected this person on the queen’s various crimes/atrocities. This conversation somehow turned to how I stated (some days prior to the queen’s death) that I avoid reblogging off of a certain person because they have posted racist content in the past. That’s where Neednoggle comes in.

Neednoggle said that this was “controlling” behavior because I was “telling people who they can or can’t interact with.” Now, again, I was simply putting out a warning that the individual I mentioned had put out racist content before. I certainly expect people to take that into consideration once they know. But I didn’t expect anyone, especially someone who preaches about racism towards one of their favorite characters, to die on the hill of “umm but I have the first amendment RIGHT to reblog off of racists!” There’s a reason we don’t reblog off of homophobes, misogynists, TERFs, abusers, etc.. If you draw the line at racists… that’s a double standard, and frankly, it’s self-absorbed.

They then proceeded to bring up a different person who I avoid for different reasons as an example for why my very detailed explanation on the other user’s racism was unreliable. This example was an extremely bad faith interpretation. Basically, they said that I called someone transphobic for… being in favor of the fictional ban on magic. In truth, I called this person transphobic for the transphobia that was in their fics (namely jokes about how men can’t get pregnant/that being able to get pregnant is what determines man from woman). Because that fic author happens to also be anti-magic, neednoggle attributed my discomfort with these jokes to the magic thing. It was really odd ngl, since I have pretty openly stated that, while you can make comparisons between having magic and being queer, it is ultimately a metaphor for religious persecution. (It’s… The Old Religion.)

A friend of mine, a brown person from the global south who I will keep anonymous unless they permit otherwise, called out the sympathy that people were projecting onto the queen. However, this was not handled well in the chat, especially not by the mods who you’d expect better from. I don’t think that this friend’s perspective was really taken into consideration at the end of the day, it was like they were talking to a brick wall. I ended up making a strong statement that people don’t get to just opt out of learning anti-racism, and that was taken as offensive by… everyone.

Despite reading these messages from my friend (who is, again, a brown person from the global south) and myself, neednoggle’s concern was more about how I was censoring(?) them by stating that some people in the fandom are racist and that I avoid spreading their posts for this reason. They ditched the conversation and a day later I found them talking about how it sucks so much for them, a white person, that there’s not a lot of fanfiction about Elyan. Maybe that wouldn’t happen if you didn’t tolerate racism, thus alienating fans of color while coddling racists? And maybe, just maybe, you should care about racism outside of its impact on your own personal entertainment? Hence my statement that enjoying a character of color does not make one anti-racist. Anyone’s capable of racism, and you can’t use a character as a shield.

Anyways, I ended the conversation with: “either you have zero tolerance for racism or you do tolerate it” and was ignored, much like I was ignored with the whitewashing thing. Avoidance must be the bread and butter of people like this.

In addition, I believe they’re also guilty of this trope I see a lot where Merlin and Morgana or whatever white characters have to teach Gwen and Lancelot or whatever brown & black characters how to read/write, despite nothing in the canon suggesting that they couldn’t already. That said, I could be thinking of someone else’s fic, idk. I seriously see this a lot and I have no idea when it got so prevalent, but when put alongside everything else, it becomes pretty suspicious. I’m not entirely confident on this one so take it with a grain of salt, but I’m pretty sure I’ve read a fic of theirs like this, and it’s just… Gwen and Lancelot were already literate in the canon, so I find it weird that it’s usually those two in particular who get singled out, especially since 1) Merlin comes from a very similar background, 2) Lancelot was exchanging letters with him for as long as two years, and 3) Gwen helped run a whole smithy.

So, in summation (because this is rlly fuckin’ long) neednoggle chose to die on the hill of “You can’t make me NOT reblog off of racist people! Also I should just be allowed to ignore racism if it makes me as a white person uncomfortable!” and then tried to say that my perception of who is/isn’t racist is not reliable by undermining and misattributing my discomfort with someone’s transphobic jokes (just to be absolutely clear, I very much stated when it happened that it was the person’s transphobia that made them transphobic; however, defending Uther’s ban on magic—even if it’s only a fictional genocide—is pretty disturbing, just like when someone defends a fictional character’s abuse, bigotry, etc. How do you apply those morals across the board?). They and everyone involved in that conversation either ignored or missed the point of what my friend, someone who has been directly affected by colonization and racism, had to say about all of it. And of course, there’s the whitewashing thing, which I only just randomly remembered today ?!? And, possibly, the trope thing. Basically I tried to #fix them but they’ve gotta be willing to fix themself, ya know?

Personally, although I do tend to discuss these issues with people before coming to any conclusions, I think that blocking or avoiding a handful of people is worth not potentially spreading their bigoted beliefs, and I don’t really wanna be in kahoots with people like that anyways, so I guess it’s difficult for me to understand why they were defending tooth and nail their right to hypothetically reblog off of hypothetical racists. It sucks when it turns out someone you liked is doing this stuff, but we’ve gotta have some integrity, even if it’s not easy. Neednoggle doesn’t seem to have that integrity.

It's me again, I wanted to say thank you, because your blog became like a safe zone to me, I live in Poland and in here many People are really religious, you can even see that now when you read about abortion ban law. Anyway while I was reading your blog i remembered one of my memories. In Poland we have religion lessons, we mostly talk about God and all, and I remember when I was 13-14 we had religion and priest decided to show us a movie, it was movie about this one girl from Germany who was possesed by 6 demons. To this day i remember how scared i was in the night, I couldnt sleep because i was afraid something would posess me, he even told us later a story about how he wittnesed exorcisim in which young girl was hold by 8 men and was talking in deep man voice. Another time when I was 15 i remeber how during one mass priest started talking how he wants to vomit everytime he is in local mall, because of all this christmas decorations (it was in the end of Novmeber) he started talking how we should be preparing for second coming of Christ, and near me some little kids were sitting and one girl was terrified, like she wanted to cry, I remeber another kid telling their mom that he doesnt want to die. Now when I am older i look on those things and I think how we as kids are told from being that either we will be good or we will die in hell. Kids should not be thinking about death, they should not be thinking "I won't do that because if I do it I won't go to heaven" they should think "I won't do it because it is not right". Like now me and my parents are atheist but I still see people my age hearing something, for example possibilty of war with Belarus, and they already go like "THE END IS NEAR, THE APOCALYPSE IS SOON" Like People please chill out, nothing will happen. Anyway ending my rant i wanted to ask what is your opinion on indoctrinating kids from birth in to religion? How should People fight with it?

Weird week behind me weird week ahead of me but I’ve done a lot of self reflection and came to the weirdest epiphany. The older I get the more I realize all my ‘problems’ with VivziePop - her thoughts on criticism;  the choices she makes in story telling; some of the people she’s worked with (not that any of that’s my business; I’m not her mom) really aren’t about Viv, but more about her fandom.

I’m speaking of the preHazbin era Viv here and as someone who’s only watch horny fish jump at the surface rather than jump straight into the Hazbin-fandom, but given my ‘noncritical’ fellow fans have told me that the Vivziefandom now is also terrible - I guess I’ll go over my experience and make the most out of what I do know.

I followed Viv in 2009 and fell off in 2013 cause I kinda just lost interest and found myself wrapped up in other fandoms. I’ve always felt amicable about her content; I could give or take designs or the way in which she wrote characters -- ((Zech represent!!!)) but it’s honestly surreal and really fun seeing this person I recognize make it big and improve so much. Like I’ve said before I am very happy and very impressed with Viv doing all she’s done in the span of TWO YEARS. wow gurl.

Trouble is, there was the particular breed of fan who really made me...uncomfortable. They felt almost possessive of Viv’s attention. They sang praises about her work in a way that just made me want nothing to do with it because I was worried if I drew those characters these people would be like ‘hey, I’M Viv’s fav artist, not you!”. They would  unironically write Viv messages like:

“you are a GOD” -- “I’m so not worthy compared to you” --“I wish I was as talented as you” -- “YOU ARE EVERYTHING AND CAN’T DO WRONG VIV”.

The kind of messages which were meant to sound flattering but, intentional or not, came off as gaslighting, like they were guilt tripping Viv about being better than them. This behavior, treating your favorite artist/internet personality like your superior and groveling like Starscream, it strikes a nerve with me; partly because I was this way with my favorite artists and influences back in the day,  but also because once I got a taste of that treatment myself I realized just how bad it could be:

There was once a girl on dA who was jealous of me because of the attention I got on my art instead of her. I told her that I wasn’t gonna stop drawing but also that there was nothing wrong with her art and she’d find her place. It was weird being put in that position where someone is very clearly upset at you but also looking for your approval.

The second was some scumball who I blocked in 2016. He wouldn’t speak to me, only write condescending, backhanded comments on my art; check on my profile daily; call me a bootlicker (cuz I took commissions) behind my back; redrew my art and would talk about me in his personal artist notes about how I ‘probably wouldn’t see this’ - oh yeah all the while he did fan art of my characters but again never spoke to me when I replied. When I finally messaged him about his behavior he said he thought I was “really overrated” and “bad for the fandom” cuz I took money and kept him from getting the love he deserved. It took messaging another person within our fandom, one I had been in spats with online before, to finally realize I shouldn't put up with that bs....

That guy who was stalking me btw did so while I was well under 1.K watchers and am still pretty obscure. Anyway, I had one guy unhealthily watching me for the wrong reasons. Just one. This is why when Viv says she “hates creeps” I 150% believe this woman and am not about to call her a liar who just can’t take criticism. Like, if you really think that, I’m sorry but you don’t know what Viv’s gone through from both her critics AND fans.

Of course, a lot of people will be like “I bet you’re just jealous and really just want that kind of attention yourself so you’re preaching to the choir”, but like...no. I am envious of just about any creator who’s the social butterfly I’m not, but, like, if I'm jealous of an artist none of that is that artists’ fault. Ever. It’s my own issues with being comfortable with myself are at stake. If I criticize Viv’s work it’s not because I see her as competition or my Squilliam Fancyson; it’s because I’m a critical fan of animation and cartoons and have my own thoughts to share on the cartoons of an artist I’m familiar with.  Jealousy/envy/mixed-admiration/godIwishthatwereme.jpeg feels are totally natural and valid emotions when you’re a creator. Envy becomes a problem when you internalize, weaponize, and scrutinize people on the basis of them being what you aren’t which -yes - some people do in the name of criticism. ((Although, I would hardly say some of the nastiest AntiViv folk are jealous as much as they are angry that this project they think is harmful is getting attention and using that as justification for some really shitty behavior of their own, which no, this post is not a part of by virtue of coming from a critical fan.))

Critique can come from either a good place or bad place; good critique can be used to bad ends and bad critique can come from a well-meaning place, and vice versa.   It’s the difference between many a criticalfan having a sour taste in their mouth regarding the Viv’s base but persisting in a critique+admiration separate of that, and this asswipemonster trying to weasel his way into Spindlehorse while also bashing Viv on a public forum for clearly vitriolic reasons. He was a creep.

So yeah um please stop insisting that every Hazbin critic is just jealous’ because a) there are people who have a past with Viv’s base and that clouds their judgement, but in a lot of cases that doesn’t invalidate their feelings or thoughts on her work separate from that, and b) I’ve seen what clingy gaslighting jealous fans are. Spoiler: they’re not so much Annie Wilkes as much as they are Tommy Wiseaus. You don’t want Tommy Wiseau following you.

Another bad vibe I really picked up on that I can kinda confirm is still probably the case now: people think that they know Viv and the Spindlehorse crew and have the right to send them shit they don’t need or WANT to be seeing.

Like, I talked with Viv once ages ago. I don’t remember what I said other than we were talking about Frankenweenie, I think. She was nice. Outside of that she said “thank you” to my comments on her deviations but that’s it. I DO NOT KNOW THIS WOMAN AND unless you’ve worked with or are a legit friend/mutual of hers, NEITHER DO YOU. But I don’t think every Vivzie stan/critic knows this. Whether it be people assuming she MUST think they’re headcanon is now canon-canon cuz she liked a comment they made; or some critic thinking they must have seriously hurt her pride because they’ve been blocked by her on twitter (or you know, maybe she and the rest of Spindlehorse is tired of getting @s and don’t have to time to read through your analysis so they’re gonna just block and move on cuz they’re busy).

Just because the creators talk with fans doesn’t mean fans are literally their best friends and have a part in the show’s direction. And yes, critics and reviewers fit that bill as well. Know your damn boundaries people.

If you find/make some kind of contribution as a viewer that’s awesome but you should never expect nor DEMAND the creator see it. The most obvious horror stories involving this and Helluva/Hazbin have been the Instagrams made by the crew being harassed by incestpedo enthusiasts, but it applies even to just @ing creators as well.

I’ve seriously had someone tell me to just take my criticisms directly to Viv and like...no. Why would I do that?

I respect Viv and the artists working with her enough to know that they’re working their asses off on an animated series and should not be bothered. I don’t want them to stop all they’re doing and reply to me. I want them to keep working. Also, that kind of logic makes me wonder how many critics Viv’s found because she found it on her own or if some obsessed fan told her about it - which is really messed up cuz if it IS just good critique you’re, again, just pestering her, and if it wasn’t critique but full on harassment WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU MESSAGE HER ABOUT THAT ANYWAY? I’m sure she doesn’t need to be reminded that people drew and said really awful shit about her on Tapatalk. My point being I’m sure what people think they’re doing is

“OOOoh Viv lookitwut this person is doing in our fandom we need to ban together against this toxic behavior”

but what they’re actually doing, and sounding like, is -

“Hey Viv I know you are working so hard on the show and you’re trying to figure out where to go from here but LOOKITWHUTTHISHATERSAID. LOOKATIT! VALIDATE ME VIV AND PUT’EM IN THEIR PLAAAAAACE!”

TL;DR Viv’s fanbase back in the day consisted of everyman artists and interests but there was this one breed of fan -who I hope was just a vocal minority- that ruined it for everything else.

Call it stanning or ‘simping’ or as it’s classically known, ‘white knighting’, whatever it was it really soured a lot of people on her because of those fans.

That’s why the DollCreep drama got so bad from what I can tell. Doll and Viv had a falling out and then called out eachother online where people who took it upon themselves to speak for them starting throwing mud.

Back in the day I remember Viv used to get mad at artists for ‘stealing’ her style. I think this attitude from Viv directly has vanished but I remember it happening because one of the people she thought was stealing her style did art for me at some point and they were basically shamed/chased off deviantART by a gaggle of these really nasty Vivfans.

I don’t know that. And honestly, where I’m inclined to believe she’d do something like that then I think Viv is really different and has improved her business and public image from her college days. I’d be very disappointed in her if she was pulling a Butch Hartman or Derek Savage, but I just don’t think she is one, k?

Viv is more self critical and aware than any of these uber protective-gatekeeping fans give her credit for. She said on the Pizzapartypodcast that she knows the Hazbin pilot wasn’t perfect; she’s been able to identify the problems with old Zoophobia; this woman knows that criticism of all kinds need to exist and from what I see she sounds like she’s trying to get used to that. It’s just, you know, when you have nasty antis badgering you, stalkers, obsessive yes-mam’ fans, opinionated shit posters, r34 artists, entitled shippers and the NDAs of a company alongside your own branded image - all that negativity, even the constructive bits, tend to clump together and you just want to scream at it so you can finish the damn cartoon already!!!!

VivziePop/mind is basically indie Tim Burton.  Her work is fun, shallow and made with love but is marketed as being for everyone when it’s really not. Parts of it I love to watch; parts of it drives me crazy cuz of reasonswhatev this isn’t a review.

BUT any fanbase where people tell me I should just “expect what’s coming to me” when I’m trying to argue against dragging creators into fandrama is troubling. People have a parasocial bond with fandoms and their creators and they need to learn when to back off.

Because those are considered great threats to US children by US conservatives. Science refutes religion, supports the idea of human-caused climate change, and demands facts for decision-making. Gays disrupt the nuclear/traditional family model.

These are both dangerous and prima facie/de facto threats to the conservative stance that preaches strict patriarchic social hierarchy. Conservatives talk openly about the 'culture war' and this is it - the idea that young white people need to be protected, violently if necessary, from anything that undermines old white/straight power.

It's the resistance to teaching critical race theory (or anything else that looks at history honestly and doesn't heavily bias white superiority), allowing drag shows, allowing trans people to exist, allowing sexual 'deviancy' of any kind, etc.

Sure, the word 'gay' has been reclaimed, but it remains a definition for people the conservatives want to strip of rights, prevent getting rights, stop from being allowed to adopt, reverse key Supreme Court decisions that makes their sexual conduct legal, prevent people from discussing non-cis-het orientations to children, ban from all school curriculums, be allowed to discriminate against, etc.

Those are the big threats to 'innocence', which is itself inappropriately valorized, with the idea of being ignorant, or keeping your children ignorant, being seen as a virtue. It sounds like satire, but it's not. At least here in Oklahoma, a super-red state, this conservative bullshit is considered a right and proper and fully respectable political point of view. There's a reason why Trump, DeSantos, and various other morons were elected. It's because people voted for them. Because there's a LOT of people who agree with this point of view - that evidence-based science and personal freedom of choice in partners are morally wrong. As my own mother said, "If it's not true, it should be."

It's a tough pill to swallow, but I work with these people. I overhear my warehouse manager telling the stock clerks this crap. I blocked most of my extended family on Facebook so I wouldn't have to see it. Politics and religion are both forbidden subjects at family gatherings because I won't budge and neither will they. My sister said she 'wouldn't stand for this trans shit' and my nephew is only out to us among his relations.

It sucks.
