Roman grabs his glass from the coffee table taking another sip of his drink before placing it in Lilah's hands. She was now his table. Lilah felt a thrill run through her as Roman placed the glass in her hands. She held it carefully, feeling the cool glass against her skin. She was now his table, and she was determined to be the best table she could be.

Roman leaned back in his chair, a satisfied smile on his face. "Good girl," he said, his eyes flicking to the glass in her hands. "Now, hold that for me. Don't spill a drop."

Lilah nodded, her eyes fixed on the glass in her hands. She focused on keeping it steady, not wanting to disappoint Roman. She felt a sense of pride at being able to serve him in this way, to be his table and do exactly as he asked as he went about his day, texting back at forth with his cousins as if she wasn't on her knees in front of him. Yeah, this was hot, she thought to herself.

"You're doing so well," he said, his voice low and approving as he tucks his phone away for the moment, he puts his glass on the actual coffee table this time having other plans for Lilah. She was about to be his footstool.

Roman leaned back in his chair, his legs stretched out in front of him. He looked at Lilah with a smirk, and then gestured to his feet. "Come here," he said, his voice commanding. "I want to prop my feet up, Toy."

I have read so many undercover Dick Grayson that wore the sluttiest outfits just to get info. Even read a few where he did it to make his siblings (mainly Jason) more comfortable since they weren't comfortable with it yet that was his forte (regardless of whether or not he liked doing that as well).

Want a character study about how the annoyed/stubborn/exhausted guy from the comics turned into an "attention whore" on fics? I remember reading (and even writing) character studies where Dick is suffering from stuff such as hypersexuality and anxiety issues where he needs people to see/notice/pay attention to him as a result of his sexual trauma (the assault & other stuff he went through).

And so much more. The duality of that man, when a character has such a variety of interpretations and ways to write about them it just fills that writer/storyteller/reader in me with joy. That complex potential that I seek in characters, like being able to kill someone while also being a hero loved by the hero community, a celebrity loved by the world and a few beyond it, a spoiled rich kid when he likes to indulge himself and a victim that has suffered through so much, it's natural to give them different ways (separation anxiety, exhibitionism, aversion to touch, etc) to cope and deal with the horrible hand that was given to them. It's just something that is very rare to come across in a character, especially one so well known and loved for all of those different things rather than only one or two of them taking over the entire character and its interpretation, and I really love Nightwing for being that character for both writers and readers looking for somethings and finding all they could ask for and more in just a singular tag (ofc I know the other characters have a variety as well, Dick just has such a big variety and his "spectrum" is so big, vast and versatile, he has a piece of the fandom for everything, like a bunch of different characters smacked into one, all sharing the same name, it's why I chose him specifically and why I love reading about him the most specifically).

Sending an ask instead of commenting because I prefer to keep discourse away from my blog. but, I have to get some of this off my chest. it's bound to be lengthy, so don't feel like you have to read/respond. you just seem like maybe you'll get my point. Read this as one big I statement because of course it's my opinion and I'm not out here reading everyone's minds.

On that last post. I think a lot of people have gone and manic-pixie-dream-girl'd Eris beyond recognition, and that some of shippers (not all, ofc) have spent so much time with their own headcanons & fanfic that they've forgotten how their real dynamic is. It's easy to project a relationship onto them if you're already looking for one. People see them bicker and go "aw, they're arguing like an old married couple!" when, no. They're just arguing.

Drifter definitely flirts with her, but she doesn't reciprocate and I don't even think that it's necessarily serious. That man would flirt with a wall if he thought it would be funny. He seems like the type to tease people that way regardless of gender or attraction to them.

I don't deny that there's something between them. knowing the lore as I do I think it's safe to say that they're somewhat close, whatever that can even mean for either of them, but for fucks sake close isn't always romantic. Are they friends? Maybe. Can either of them have friends at their level of stability? I genuinely don't know. I don't think that we've been given enough to go off of, honestly. I don't like the idea that they're going to magically have their trauma cured by dating each other. She doesn't need him to "file down her teeth", and I don't think that he would. He definitely seems to benefit from her input, though. I don't feel like their relationship is very balanced in that. There's plenty of lore to back up him getting and using advice from her, and it being helpful to him, but I haven't seen much the other way around. He's immature in a way that she isn't, and people seem to think she's going to settle for that.

I don't care who people ship or what their headcanons are, that's all their own business. If I don't like it, it's not like I'm going off on their blogs in the space they've made themselves about why I don't agree with them. I prefer to just back off a bit, let them have their space and I'll have mine. But I don't always see that respect going both ways, and it starts to really bother me when people try to project their headcanons onto other blogs and onto the developers. Almost anything I see of them independently, it seems someone has to show up with "but where's [the other one]", and I've seen shippers go after multiple people for asking that their fanart of the two isn't tagged as ship art. It's just overstepping at that point.

Of course, I don't like lumping a bunch of people under the single label of drifteris shippers and calling them all a problem, I'm well aware that it's probably a loud minority silent majority type situation and I'm not going to assume someone's like that just because that's their content. But a lot (that I've seen) are.

On the misogyny part, I've definitely seen it in some. I'm a guy, so I'm probably not going to have the world's best explanation of why, but what gets to me is mostly the over-romanticism of Eris as his quirky goth gf. It's dumb and often comes off as objectifying. Sometimes it's like people think she's some edgy egirl twitch streamer. I find it strange how much fanart of her changes her appearance too, given we can barely actually see her. And sometimes it winds up painting Drifter as this douchy dudebro that he just isn't. One of the best things about his character to me is that he has his attitude without the shit treatment of women that comes along with it with most similar characters in games. I don't understand the need to turn around and twist him into someone that pushes her boundaries, which is pretty necessary to read their arguments as flirting.

I don't know what else to say, it's late and I'm tired and I'll probably feel stupid for letting myself get wrapped up in fandom discourse but I might as well say it while the conversation is happening.

No shade to shippers that don't fit the description I've put here. If you're reading this and go "Hey! I don't do that!" then obviously I don't mean you. You're all just doing what makes you happy and, hey, go for it. Tumblr is a great place for that. It's only an issue (imo) when that crosses the line into expecting everyone else to have the same headcanons or ignore what is canon. Go make art and fanfic and whatever you want, there's plenty of people who will appreciate it. I'm glad the positive side of the ship fanbase helps boost both of their stories, I hope it winds up driving Bungie to put more content in of them, together or apart.

I've thought about this for awhile. Eris is frequently written as a Manic Pixie Dream Girl insofar as being the offbeat catalyst for a jaded man's journey to a better version of himself.

He seems like the type to tease people that way regardless of gender or attraction to them.

Whether you ship them or not, it's odd seeing Drifter's canon characterization as a recklessly charismatic flirt lost in fanon. That special significance is placed on his flirtation with Eris, and not with the Guardian, Orin, Efrideet, or Rahool, or the others I'm probably forgetting.

Of course, the Guardian is a blank slate the player can project motives onto, and the others are characters whose interactions with Drifter are limited to lore. His & Eris' interactions stand out. That still doesn't mean it's inherently romantic; I've platonically flirted, held hands, snuggled, danced, bed-shared, and other things fans would dedicate thousands of words of shipfic to were I a fictional character.

Though reading it as such is fine (and I'll concede, probably lines up with the authors' intent, since we know some of them are shippers), nothing in the lore is explicitly romantic. Note, authorial intent, word-of-god and canon are all separate things, as much as fandom conflates them.

An aside, it's interesting how fanon surrounding Drifter paints him as socially anxious, touch starved, romantically awkward ... until he meets Eris. While I understand the utility in shipping — to emphasize the One True Love aspect since serial monogamy, much less polyamory, is unknown to most, especially F/M, shippers — it also comes off as "did not read the lore" at best, and "perpetuating negative stereotypes about Asian men" at worst.

Can either of them have friends at their level of stability? I genuinely don’t know.

This is why Eris' and Drifter's dynamic peaked in Arrivals & Beyond Light. The tenuousness of their alliance, the acceptance and rejection of each other's flaws, the trust between them that wasn't earned but necessary to survive. It was fun, tense and compelling and I wish more of the fandom focused on this era of their relationship.

Cosigned. The idea that love can mend any wound, heal any trauma, or fix any flaw is textbook amatonormativity, and has unfortunate implications when applied to Eris' story. I shouldn't have to detail why "woman overcomes trauma with the affection of a man" leaves a bad taste in my and many other fans' mouths, especially when it's favored over her longer-standing relationships with other characters. Why is her bond with Ikora ignored? Zavala? Asher? Mara? Why is so much of her growth pinned on one man, when there are other, deeper relationships that have existed since practically the beginning of Destiny's narrative? Why is there so little shipping surrounding Eris and these other characters?

Almost anything I see of them independently, it seems someone has to show up with “but where’s [the other one]”, and I’ve seen shippers go after multiple people for asking that their fanart of the two isn’t tagged as ship art.

I don't typically engage with popular Destiny ships, but I draw Mara Sov frequently. By herself, and, frequently, in non-Marasjur pairings. Not once have I gotten a "Where's Sjur?" comment, or even a "Where's Shaxx?" for that matter, as pushy as the "helmet stayed on" bros are. Meanwhile, I expect these comments when posting Eris art, particularly Eris F/F. I've had this happen in art I've drawn of her and Drifter with a disclaimer that the art is platonic/not to tag as ship! At that point it's not misunderstanding, it's entitlement.

I'm technically an Eris/Drifter shipper in the sense of consuming and producing art & fic for them, though I've pulled back from interacting with that part of the fandom because [waves hands generally]. I have no issues with drifteris as a ship, nor enmity drifteris shippers as a whole, but the individuals who engage in rude behavior.

Sometimes I wonder if I should try to put more good Eris/Drifter out there, but most of the time I fear I would only be stemming the tide; I am just one person with limited resources, and there is so much out there that my work will go unnoticed and my time is better spent boosting small ships that need the help.

Mostly I wish there was more focus on Eris and Drifter as individuals, in the game and in the fandom, further exploration of their bonds with other characters, and an environment where a wider range of gen and ship fic/art could flourish.

Hot take but I think that mfs reception to Ascended!Astarion (whether they think he’s hot, a shell of himself, etc) is all based on how they perceive the character. Like if you think Astarion is a hot sexy vampire man and that’s it, ofc you’ll think Ascended!Astarion is hot because Astarion’s character is some handsome man fantasy and you’re into that. But if you think his character and story is cool and don’t just view him as an sexual object only, you see past his lil dominant carnal vampire lord god king persona.

Now, we can a conversation that most mfs who like Ascended!Astarion either aren’t in Act 2 or 3, or just haven’t played the game (which is fine like him if you like him). But I think that the writers explained shit really well, I got it on my first playthrough (and the moral dilemma put a mf through it lmao). The main issue in the fanbase when pertaining to Astarion is that a lot of “Astarion girlies” aren’t cRPG players so they’re not good at the game so they haven’t progressed through the story. Which, again, is fine but you have people romanticizing the worst possible outcome for Astarion not because the writing didn’t portray shit correct (it did, like read between the lines he explains what full fledged vampires act like), but because a lot of Astarion fans objectify him and/or haven’t even finished his questline yet because this is their first cRPG and they don’t know what they’re doing.

This isn’t me dissing people who aren’t good at the game, it took me almost a decade to complete BG1, BUT we have to understand that a lot of the “Astarion girlies” are on tiktok watching out of context Ascended!Astarion edits and scenes meanwhile they’re not even in Act 2 yet. They don’t know this character, they haven’t naturally encountered his storyline in the context of the game. Again, I’m not shaming anybody who isn’t good at BG3, but if you go into BG3 and play it like an Astarion dating sim, you’re going to objectify the character and not get the lore/context behind things.

I just want to ramble a bit on my thoughts on James Somerton before I watch Hbomberguys video on it so I can look back at this post (and feel totally validated on getting weird vibes from him) and see If my feelings were onto something. (Also I'm not pretending like I knew all along just how bad he is and trying to feel superior, sometimes I get bad vibes from channels and am right, and sometimes I'm totally blind-sided like with Gus Johnson who's videos I used to like)

One of the things that made me stop watching him was when he talked about anime/manga. The guy very clearly had a very western biased perspective on it (or at least whoever he was plagiarizing from) and never seemed to look for perspectives from the people of that actual culture, and also just seemed racist towards it in general.

Along with saying that most women who write/enjoy gay anime/fanfic are straight and fetishizing the relationships and gay men need to 'reclaim' the medium (after all, women aren't allowed to have anything, it all needs to belong to men). A lot of those women turn out to be queer, or later identify with a different gender/no gender.

Like I won't deny that fujoshis exist and that a lot of them are annoying and it is a problem, but I feel this issue goes so much deeper that people just don't seem to think about.

I'll try to articulate this point well even if no one is reading this cause I feel like screaming into a void.

Everyone jokes about whether some piece of medium would pass the betchdel test, cause women in a lot of media barely interact with men in a non-hetero way, let alone talk to other women. Which is why I think a lot of people, especially women, gravitate towards the relationships between the men. Often cause we have nothing to work with for the women. Like in the media I consume, which is a lot of manga I will admit cause I tend to prefer non-fiction for straight up literature, I will see a lot of interesting male dynamics, but often have to go out of my way to find any female dynamics at all. I genuinely like wlw relationships more than mlm but it can be hard to find especially if you're not going out of your way for it.

I think women also write a lot of gay porn because of how they are viewed/portrayed by society. Women are often so sexualized/objectified that I think a lot of them don't want to repeat that because they're tired of their bodies being seen that way. So I think they often flip it and try to sexualize men more in a bit of a middle finger way (like the rise in art of men in bunnysuits poledancing, which decades ago would probably seem ludicrous to hear a man in that situation, or taking comic book art and swapping the genders).

I will probably need to do more research on this next point, but I hear this may be a theory on why a lot of women have rape fantasies. I'm not speaking about rape victims having those fantasies cause I am just not knowledgeable enough about that and don't want to be hurtful with uninformed opinions. It's been stigmatized that women should not enjoy sex, and made the idea that females masturbating is shameful. So these fantasies can be seen as a way to enjoy the pleasure without having the guilt that you actually want sex. Ofc I know rape victims are stigmatized just as much if not more, so maybe this point is bunk. I hope nothing I said in this paragraph is hurtful, feel free to correct me otherwise.

Also just the fact that fandom spaces have often had a lot more women than men, and are often mocked for their interests. I won't deny that men haven't also been bullied decades ago for having 'nerdy' interests like Star Wars, but those people often tended to push women out of trying to join their groups. So women go on the internet and start forming these communities, and James now says that men need to 'reclaim' these spaces from women, that often were created because men pushed them out in the first place.

(I won't deny however that fandoms do have a misogyny problem. So many people do not seem to care about female characters. I won't deny that female characters can often be more poorly written, but I've seen people on here create entire personalities for male characters with none/not even having any speaking lines with none of that energy dedicated towards female characters. Skill issue.)

Let me tell you a story of a girl.

When the girl was 14 years old, she had a boyfriend (a childish one!), a thin and tall boy who’s so all over himself and thinks he’s a big shot. Well, she didn’t expect anything from the boy to be honest. Unsurprisingly, the boyfriend had his fair share of his bullshit. 

There was an event in school, like a halloween party of some sort. The girl and her boyfriend decided to get ready with her boyfriend’s friends, the type of barkada that passes around their boyfriends and girlfriends, the barkada that throws their lives away without a care for anything. Anyway, they were in a big house and her boyfriend’s friends were all there, drinking (underage yes ofc), smoking cigs and pot, and all of the teenager toxic YOLO fun they thought they were having. 

But you know, all of this was new for the girl. The girl, a new student in this provincial school, who came from a no cellphone, no inappropriate things, sheltered and very religious school in the city. So when the barkada asked her to drink and smoke and do all of those things with them, she politely said no, thank you. 

Back then, she didn’t understand yet. That saying no to this barkada would spark different impressions on her. That saying no to them is like saying you don’t want to be with them. That saying no to them was the same as offending them. And this was a complete ick for the girl’s boyfriend.

So when she said no, thank you, the boyfriend proceeded to say that she’s boring and that he wished the girl was more adventurous. That she’s so hard to love because she’s not like the girls he dreamt about. That she should be thankful that the boyfriend stayed with her for so long, after not satisfying him enough. 

After this incident, her boyfriend became more hostile, more monstrous, more cruel towards her. He was pressuring the girl to kiss him (first kiss). Imagine, being in a big church, the boyfriend forcing the girl to let him touch her breasts. And when the girl confronted him, she said what are you doing? In church, really?. The boyfriend just gave a lame excuse about testing the girl whether she is a pimp who lets anyone who asks to fondle her breasts do whatever they want or if she is a good girl who reserves herself only for her boyfriend, whether he asks for consent or not, wherever and whenever. 

You know, what hurt the most for the girl was not how she was sexualized, objectified, or used by her boyfriend, but by how the boyfriend’s friends knew exactly what he was doing to her. What he was saying to her. And how these same friends were actually thinking about the same fucking things about her. 

When one of the friends of her boyfriend talked to her, he whispered to the girl and said maybe if you let yourself loose more, you can be a better girlfriend. Maybe if you let your boyfriend do whatever he wants, you can keep him. Maybe if you make yourself more beautiful, your boyfriend would love you better. Maybe if you are not so boring, I would have liked you for myself.  

So she decided to change herself. At first, for her boyfriend so he would stay. The girl hoped, really hoped, that if she changed into something he wanted, she would get the respect she demanded. That if she is someone who his friends liked as well, she would be seen as a person, and not as an object of a woman, of sex, and of a plaything. 

And you know what? She did change. She got more serious in her academics and she excelled. She navigated the different things a normal teenager would, with all the drinking and smoking and taking risks and sneaking out. She was better than that hypocrite barkada and she would be lying if she said she didn’t like what these changes made her feel. She felt wanted by a lot of people, not just her boyfriend. She felt like she belonged finally. 

She knew. She knew she could do better than her boyfriend, so she left him. She felt this new power over her (ex)boyfriend, who was begging her to stay, who was beginning to realize what he wasted. But after a while, it all felt superficial. 

Because she was still not respected, albeit she was more objectified and sexualized. Yes, she was wanted by a lot of people, but not for who she was. They all wanted this new girl, a new persona, who she built for herself, thinking it was the way to be seen and respected properly. 

At the time, it all came crashing down on her. It pushed her into a dark and deep place, again. Why is she doing this? Why is she changing herself to please other people? All of these thoughts but it came to a conclusion. 

Maybe, she’s the one at fault. Maybe her ex’s friend was right. 

She was (is) too boring, too dull. She is a handful, a difficult person to be with. She is hard to love. This was on her mind for god knows how long. Maybe too long for her to believe that this is her truth.

But she got better. She thought. She hoped. The girl basked in the changes she made, for what was changed cannot be undone. The girl tried her best to be okay. And it worked, for a time, that is too long because she believed she was okay. 

Now she’s a woman, sometimes a woman of nothing, sometimes a woman of something. But most of the time, just a woman who’s trying to survive the dreadful days and the cold nights. 

Now, she’s a woman who had forgotten. 

So when she heard those words again after all these years, this time from a person she completely trusts, from a person who taught her what love should feel like, from a person whom she believed to be her person, she did not know how to react aside from the fact that it sounded foreign but so fucking familiar at the same time. 

Because she had forgotten. She had buried it in her heart, in her mind, how awful and painful it feels to hear those words. She had sworn to never let herself be hurt from those words ever again. Because she is now a woman who’s too old for this, who’s too busy for this.

But alas, she is still the same girl, a little bit older, yes, but not wiser. So when her person said you’re so boring, it ringed in her ears. 

She knows her person did not mean it like that. They did not say it like how her silly old ex said it to her. The woman and her person were just walking down the street and her person cracked a joke but the woman did not laugh. So they just said that as a response, as a joke. But it still hurt, it sounded so wrong in her ears. 

She was quiet for the rest of the night. She was hurt by it, and she was trying to process the feeling again. Her person noticed this and they said sorry, looking so guilty. And the woman said it’s okay.

She knows it’s not her person’s fault. They do not know the girl’s past. And the girl never bothered to tell their person, because honestly, what’s the fucking point right? It’s something she should have let go. It’s something so fucking petty that she should not give a fuck anymore, right?

But, she is stupid for forgetting that she is indeed boring. That she is hard to love. That she is too much. And that this is her truth. 

So now, the woman is thinking about her 14 year old self. Blaming her younger self for having so many traumas. For letting people have rights to hurt her so much. 

Most of all, she feels fucking sorry at herself to the point that she is typing this to verbalize everything. She doesn't know what to do anymore. I do not know what to do.

Let's talk about Devil May Cry, as a product of capcom. It is a product of it's time, a fiction which will reflect sensibilities of it's time. Language and words evolve with time and context, they are relative and dynamic. As I have already made a point what was seen as 'cool' in 2000 (misogyny, homophobia) is not 'cool' anymore. Time and sensibilities change. As a 'product' for the masses, Devil May Cry has to appeal to it's audience base which back in the 2000s were teenage boys or young men. I'm not denying the existence of a female audience, but it was in comparison less or unacknowledged. Any product's sole aim or existence depends on the appeal to the audience and you have to cater to the audience need, one reason why we see so much *appeasement* in the entertainment industry these day with no real intentions to touch the core issue. Most of the time, fiction is limited and hugely guided by the monetary part, ofc, it limits artistic temperament and artists aspiration and vision, but it is quintessential sadly. But you might also not always cater or tap in audience demand right by wrong assessment ,for example, reboot, capcom thought there was a need to 'westernise' but it got lost in translation.

Anyway. My point is mysogynist comments we see are nothing but evidence of the time the fiction was produced in, back then, it was 'acceptable', 'humoured', and 'well received'. Rather than seeing it as a sore point, the fiction can very well use it to translate the character growth. Yes, we can think Dante was a misogynist pig in his teenage years knowing well that he grew up all alone without parents, among mercenaries, goons or what not. And with the worst 'scum' of society because there was no one to shield him from the ills. He was young and impressionable. He adapted those mysogynist nature to be 'respected' or treated as 'man' among his peers (as I'm sure it was majority men in mercenary business, not denying badass women like Nell Goldstein). His interaction also involved women like Kerry who just saw him as a piece of meat. He was a conventionally attractive man who was definitely objectified and sexualized, he learnt to do the same. But with time, he grew to be a man who can respect, can understand, and acknowledge the strength of women with their own agency. Then, as a commodity or object. I think that is more beautiful.
