pshhh non-verbal kevin is so good... I will be obsessed. It makes so much sense in terms of how language and speech have been a means of both freedom and control for kevin. I'm just thinking about how distinctly his dialogue changes in canon when he's talking to Riko. Because of course Kevin would seek comfort in silence over the risk of being forced back into that same role of carefully choosing his words at risk of ruin. And Andrew thinking he physically ruined Kevin's vocal chords - my god - the angst potential! Is there any difference in languages? Like kevin being able to speak in french or Japanese but not in english? Anyways now i'm stuck in a loop of thinking about Kevin's relationship with language so thank you for that i guess :/

I KNOW RIGHT!!!! ahhhh gnat you're always so smart and you always get it... its just so right..........!!!!! kevin being forced into japanese at a young age, losing his irish accent/gaeilge, then also thrusted into the us and assimilating as well as possible in both japanese and american culture.... i think a lot of people forget kevin is also an adopted son!!!!!! he wasnt just physically different from riko and tetsuji, but also totally different culture-wise!!! it must've been so hard for a little boy his age....... it's so easy to forget kevin isn't even american in the first place because i'm not sure even he himself remembers it..... ahh.... poor baby...

and about different languages hmmm such a good question! i think japanese is definitely off-limits and increasingly hard to even think in, let alone speak it. it was the language he shared with riko and what he mostly used to speak to the master, so it's somewhat even worse than english. but french.......... ohhh..... i think it's really.... french is the language jean taught him and the language of friendship and the language of being a teenage boy so i really don't know if kevin could let up on it... i'm not sure he'd be fine saying anything at all — it's too hard to even get a laugh out, talking feels too big a task —, but perhaps it's easier if jean is the one he'd be talking to..... i think it'd be clipped and an audible struggle, but yes, kevin would be able to communicate in french! it's just that it feels a lot harder than usual, so it'd be all short sentences, and so exhausting he'd still go back to signing after a few minutes! kind of like when people can walk with crutches but still need wheelchairs when they get tired :)

but in the same vein, i think talking in french with neil would be really hard, and kevin wouldn't do it because he wouldn't think it's worth the effort. not because he doesn't want to talk to neil, but because they're really argument-prone so any kind of verbal communiaction would just extend and extend, so...... in a way signing feels easier, even if it's harder to get kevin's intent across. neil is a bit of a special case though because i really can't imagine kevin ever being afraid of talking to him, so it's more upsetting than anything when he opens his mouth and he just can't get anything out to neil. at some point neil just insists they use sign instead because he can see how visibly distressed kevin gets when he tries to talk and nothing comes out

Oh, speaking of Vasco & Machete's voices, I always imagined machete as having either a very high and delicate voice or an uncharacteristically grave, low and regal voice, similar to how Jeremy Irons voices Scar in the original lion king. I personally like the grave voice idea much more, i find it at the same time a curve ball and somehow fitting of Machete

I think it's a little bit of both. Machete has a meticulously crafted work persona that is quite different from what he's like off the clock, you could say he has developed a distinct customer service voice. It's imperative that he comes across as professional, respectable and authoritative, so he has learned to use a lower register than he normally would, and keeps his tone cold, measured and impersonal. I'd say he sounds dignified and somewhat long-suffering, often with a tired, bitter creak. All in all he sustains this business facade quite well.

In private he's very soft-spoken and tends to have an underlying wounded, whimpery frailness to him. He practically never raises his voice but when sufficiently agitated, he becomes a fast and expressive talker and his pitch rises sharply. He doesn't sing (outside of conducting an occasional Mass, I suppose) but has a surprisingly light and airy laugh.
