#6: The Lady in the Lake (1946)

I’ll be honest, the best part of this movie is Audrey Totter. There’s a reason she was one of the queens of B movies in the 1940s—she’s just incredible. She’s cold and calculating and absolutely gorgeous.

A lot of things about this movie are a little hard to judge because the cinematography is frankly just that distracting. Robert Montgomery invented first-person POV camera work for this movie and it’s a very impressive accomplishment. It also just takes over the whole thing.

The plot kind of follows the book, though it simplified the actual lake plot, which is kind of hilarious, and all of the romance between Marlowe and Adrienne Fromsett is completely made up.

Montgomery is a so-so Marlowe, he’s not the worst one to do it but he’s far from the best either. Again, I think a big part of that is that the cinematography keeps him so disconnected from the audience that you just don’t get to know him well and then his doing double-duty as the director kept him busy. The star of the film is really Totter, which is probably just as well.

Overall movie score: 3.5/5, mostly for Audrey Totter and the innovation in cinematography

Marlowe score: 3/5, Montgomery isn't bad, he just doesn't quite feel present; ironically his focus on the first-person POV made me feel detached from him as a character

Perry Mason score: 3/5, it's only Audrey Totter but she's just so incredible that she's worth 3 points all by herself

This is for the 5 other people on here who also have Watch Dogs 2 brainworms and are 👀😳 about Wrench.

Got back on a WD2 kick recently and did some art for a fic I've been picking at since march. Mainly just drew it to embed in a chapter but it came out nice enough that I wanted to put it somewhere.

(Side note on something I noticed while drawing this: I'm not fully convinced that all of Wrench's tattoos are real tattoos. A lot of them definitely are, but a bunch of them actually look like they're drawn on with sharpie, especially the ones on his torso. It would be very in character for him to have doodled all over himself before Swelter Skelter so I'm choosing to believe it, lmao)

Oppenheimer has a scene of a very beautiful naked woman fucking a very beautiful naked man and there is zero sexual energy displayed on screen. Zero. Said woman stops halfway through it and makes the man (Oppenheimer himself) read a poem in Sanskrit about death, which the audience is supposed to associate with the atomic bomb. There is a second attempt at romance: Oppenheimer flirts while explaining quantum mechanics. Looking into his future wife's eyes under his big eyelashes, he says that matter is mostly empty, negative space; it's the bond between atoms that creates the illusion of matter being solid. What we experience as touch, he says while holding her hand, is the repulsion of this bond that stops one body from going through the other. It was in fact appealing to me, but then by the end of the movie Oppenheimer has visions of carbonized bodies laid before him: his invention destroyed matter in such a brutal way that he steps not onto them but through them. So basically. All scenes about sex are not about sex; they are about death. What is about sex in fact, the climax, if you will, is death: the most erotic scene in the movie, the high point of tension that takes your breath away, is a scene of people watching an atomic bomb explode. And that really says all you need to know about how Nolan's mind operates
