@vintagetvstars DeForest Kelley propaganda! I know he doesn't have a chance of winning against Leonard Nimoy (if I had my way it'd be an exact tie between them), but still, he's so damn handsome!

Me: I love all of the TOS trio individually.

I think Amber was genuinely so good for Wilson. She understood him more than most people, and she encouraged his independence. She genuinely wanted him to put himself first and do things he wanted instead of just doing things he thought others wanted. And a lot of that was able to happen because she herself was incredibly independent. She wasn't the stereotypically "needy" person Wilson had been drawn to before, so she wouldn't stand for his attempts at being a martyr. She stood up to House, too, but she also cared about him in her own way because Wilson cared about him. She appreciated their relationship and went out of her way to work things out with House for Wilsons sake. I have a lot to say about why I think all of Wilson's female relationships failed and why I think that was caused by his internalized struggle with his sexuality, but I stand by the fact that I think Amber was actually good for him and one of, if not the most, healthy relationship he had in the show.
#dont get me wrong im a hilson truther until the day i die#but Amber was just such a bad bitch and she was so fierce and amazing and i loved her#and at first i was super hesitant about their relationship but she grew on me so much#and yes she is needy in her own way but nothing compared to wilsons other relationships#i loved how she stood up for herself and did not allow Wilson to degrade himself to make her happy#she wanted them to both be equals#and would not accept anything less#she knew her own worth and saw Wilsons worth and therefore refused to let them be anything less then they deserved#and i do think nobody understood Wilson as well as House#But i think Amber couldnt come very close#as close as possible#house md#house#hilson#james wilson#wilson#greg house#gregory house#robert sean leonard#dr james wilson#amber volakis

Thinking. Abt this but with Bones. Like. Post-Tholian Web? Post-Mirror Mirror?
For AOS, could be after Into Darkness and/or Beyond.
A Bones who's just. So anxious. So stressed. So overwhelmed that it starts taking a toll on his health. Maybe he doesn't even realise - or maybe he does and tries his best to push through it until it knocks him on his ass. Kind of in the vein of "You don't actually know how tired you are until you stop. And then you just physically cannot start again." It becomes his new baseline, a problem that just brews and storms in the distance.
And he just carries on. And keeps going and going and going until one day he realises that 'Oh fuck, I'm not okay' and has about 5 seconds of warning before he straight up collapses, doesn't matter if it's on the bridge, in the madbay, on a planet - he's going down. (Maybe a repeat of Tholian Web where he just straight up faints into Spock's arms? Full whammy, why not)
Maybe it's a high-tension situation getting resolved that does it. The pure relief of it reminds him of how tired he is. How tired he's been for a while. His body sees that momentary rest and goes "More of that, please. And I'm not asking."
And he's so rendered by it that he doesn't grumble about being coddled like he normally would when he wakes up. He knows not to fuck with the medbay staff - they're just as firm as he is on recovery, and that's not by accident - and he knows that Spock and Kirk will be hovering, because they see any problem as something they, too, should shoulder the burden of.
...And because they're some of the most protective people in the damned universe. And that goes for pretty much all the people on board the Enterprise.
In some scenarios, it's just a case of letting his body and mind rest properly. In others, there's a lot more recovery involved than anyone initially expects. Luckily for him, he has a found family who are determined to be there with him at every step. It just takes a couple reminders, every once in a while.
#leonard bones mccoy#star trek tos#star trek aos#whump#back on my bullshit#aos bones fretting over Jim and Spock and their injuries; completely forgetting that hes also a little worse for wear#thinking back to dustykneed's post abt him being fucked up and grieving after ST:ID and. Lets just make it even more physical#After the issues they face from that; Spirk are more aware of Bones' tendency to brush things off. are more equipped to take care of him#when he needs it; just as he does for them. He's so stubbornly self sufficient and it worries them. But they're equally as stubborn and#loving. Unstoppable Force meets Immovable Object. I feel like post ST:ID is where they kind of Learn that Bones keeps shit on the down low#Because like. Bones will complain. Unless it's smth that's just affecting him. And then he suddenly keeps it to himself. When he complains#abt that whole fiasco he complains abt Jim dying. Abt Spock almost dying on that planet. About how they all almost died. But he doesn't tal#about how HE almost died from that fucking torpedo almost blowing up on him. Not a word. Jim forgot it had even happened until like. Carol#brings it up in passing. Maybe she has nightmares on the incident. But he realises Bones has just NEVER fucking mentioned it despite him#being the master complainer. That sets off the first alarm bells. And then maybe Uhura asks Jim how Bones is doing bc she knows that Bones#would just say he's fine. But Jim is like ??? Bc why wouldn't Bones be okay. And then she realises that HE HASN'T realised that Bones is th#kind of motherfucker to suffer in silence. and she's like Jim. Jim he literally ran himself to the ground trying to revive you. Jim. Are yo#kidding me have you NOT TALKED ABOUT THAT??? ANY OF IT??? Thus... Jim realises or maybe even Remembers what Bones is like#bc maybe at some point he DID know Bones well enough to know when he's fucking himself over. But all the Bullshit that theyve gone through#and the fact they work in entirely different parts of the ship kind of. Alienated them a bit. And suddenly hes like. Oh. Oh No. Oh FUCK.#because Jesus how the FUCK does he even approach this. But he manages it. And Spock gets in on it too as he slowly gets to know the doctor#And then post-beyond its like. Yeah. All three of them gang up on each other. That includes Spock and Kirk making sure Bones is as Fine as#he always says he is.#anyway. Yeah. I just think Bones probably stresses and overthinks too much but god forbid anyone comfort him. Self sacrificing bastard#wow this is a lot of alphabet soup im so sorry AHAHA

thinking about the greatest thing I've ever been asked as a leonard mun ever that still frequently pops into my head and it was two years ago "do you think 1.3 would be transphobic"
#gu6chan's musings#drakengard#drag on dragoon#drakengard 1.3#drag on dragoon 1.3#my answer was no given the kind of world they live in and that he's ALREADY a pretty progressive guy for the established standards humans#seem to have in dod (re: treating elves with respect) but like#it'd take him a while to GET it#should mention it's similar for dod1 leonard but the only difference is the context of dod1 being like 'im just a guy who cares'#and 1.3 i guess.... it being easier leverage with discrimination? as a village leader you know it can be very easy to try and group things#but when you run a (cult) village commune that's like 'we're all equals💗💞💕🥰 make love not war (just don't ask who we're making love to)'#the whole othering thing is kinda against the point ESPECIALLY in a war lmao#love rambling over stupid ass questions like these ejfjfjsjdj no leonard would NOT ve transphobic!!! very important thing we should all kno#but other note part two of the dod oc coming soon....

15 Writing Tips from Authors
1) “You take people, you put them on a journey, you give them peril, you find out who they really are.” - Joss Whedon
2) “First, find out what your hero wants, then just follow them.” - Ray Bradbury
Coffee bean’s analysis: Letting your characters lead the story can result in an authentic, character-driven story, full of real conflicts and natural emotion.
3) “Turn up for work. Discipline allows creative freedom. No discipline equals no freedom.” - Jeanette Winterson
4) “Show up, show up, show up, and after a while the muse shows up, too.” - Isabel Allende
Coffee bean’s analysis: In order to write or eventually share your story with the world, you have to sit down and do the work, even if your brain is empty. Once you show up, the creativity has a chance to spark.
5) “All bad writers are in love with the epic.” - Ernest Hemingway
6) "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." - Leonardo Da Vinci
Coffee bean’s analysis: Being able to turn a complex idea into simple words is harder than one might think— but can elevate your writing. Not everything needs to be epic or overly flowery.
7) “Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life.” - Anne Lamott
8) “I went for years not finishing anything. Because, of course, when you finish something you can be judged.” - Erica Jong
9) “Don’t write at first for anyone but yourself.” - T.S Eliot
Coffee bean’s analysis: Perfectionism will kill any chance you have at having fun and finishing your novel. Let go of that pressure of being perfect and do not worry about being judged. Write for you.
10) “Forget the books you want to write. Think only of the book you are writing.” -Henry Miller
Coffee bean’s analysis: Don’t overwhelm your schedule with trying to write a ton of projects at once. Focus your energy into one (or two) at a time.
11) "A short story must have a single mood and every sentence must build towards it." - Edgar Allen Poe
12) “Every sentence must do one of two things— reveal character or advance the action." - Kurt Vonnegut
Coffee bean’s analysis: Even if you’re writing a novel, this advice is brilliant. Whether it’s a sentence, paragraph or whole chapter... make sure they are meant to be in your story. Keep your scenes tidy and thematic, building towards something.
13) “Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.” - Anton Chekhov
Coffee bean’s analysis: When writing a novel, give your reader details so that they can picture the scene in their head. Don’t do too much telling (though it has it’s places).
14) “It is perfectly okay to write garbage— as long as you edit brilliantly.” - C.J Cherry
15) “If it sounds like writing … rewrite it.” - Elmore Leonard
Coffee bean’s analysis: Allow yourself to write messily and worry about editing later. Once in the editing phase, if your writing sounds stiff, rewrite it so that it sounds natural.

I do think the pipeline from "I should learn more about star trek due to its relevance to fandom history" to "this is actually amazing and I am obsessed with it" is real and should be studied. For me, though, it looked more like "spirk is so important to fandom history" to "I'm obsessed with trek and especially with these little guys" to "I do love spirk but also consider the triumvirate" to "I love all of these people equally but most importantly let it be known that I would die for Chief Medical Officer Leonard 'Bones' McCoy"
#i do love them all#and as a queer autistic person i have so many thoughts and feelings about Spock especially#he's very dear to me#but there's just something about that grumpy old man#star trek tos#star trek

Please consider Barry Allen fully knowing Leonard "I've Never Willingly Felt A Feeling" Snart has a thing for him, and wants to pursue that, but Snart is too scared of fucking up or getting Barry hurt to say something
So it's the opposite of that meme I've seen a lot of Barry saying Snart doesn't have a crush on him and everyone, Snart included, says he does
It's:
Snart: I don't have a crush on Barry Allen
Lisa: Yes you do
Mick: Yes You Do.
Cisco [hiding behind Lisa for protection]: Yes you do
Caitlin: Yes you do
Joe, who hates this but can't stop it: Yes you do
Iris, who equally hates this but surviving: Yes you do
Barry, crying with how much he wants to love this man: Yes you do
#coldflash#barry allen#the flash tv#leonard snart#anyway idk it's just a thought#shoutout to mick for surviving all those “heists” that were just snart showing off to the flash#the funky fucked up criminal's version of a bird mating dance#ik people want iris to be unconditionally supporting of coldflash for the vibes but i genuinely think she'd hate it#but unlike her father she'd be less controlling about it#because if barry is happy and wants this she knows HER ass ain't stopping him#they know each other too well to maintain those illusions of sanity and control#anyway cisco being scared of snart is the highlight of any imagine i do#thank you for your time

30 Days of Classic Queer Hollywood
Day 20: Farley Granger (1925 - 2011)
"I was never ashamed, and I never felt the need to explain or apologize for my relationships to anyone... I have loved men. I have loved women."
Farley Granger was an American actor who starred in nearly 40 films, mostly in the 1940s and 1950s. He is best known for his starring roles in Hitchcock's Rope (1948) and Strangers on a Train (1951).
Granger was a bisexual man, enjoying relationships with men and women equally. He was relatively open about this for the time, and was not afraid to be seen with other people suspected to be queer.
Granger was interviewed in 1996 and was asked about his experiences being queer in the golden age of Hollywood.
"You always hear about the golden age of Hollywood, but there was so much hypocrisy. All the Metro kids were so beaten in the head, every move was orchestrated. To this day, they still say, 'Oh, Mr. Mayer was so good to me. He was like our daddy.' Bullshit. He was a raging homophobe. All the studio heads were.
Granger was romantically linked to several women in Hollywood, having trysts with Ava Gardner and his costar Joan Evans, as well as engagements to actresses Janice Rule and Shelley Winters.
He was romantically linked to men such as Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents, the screenwriter of Rope (1948).
"Who was sleeping with whom -- male or female -- was hushed up by the studios. They could tear up your contract and you'd be through if there was talk that you were gay."
He was in a 45-year relationship with a man named Robert Calhoun, from 1963 until Calhoun's death in 2008.

Cal !! Saw the previous ask about Bryce and I absolutely loved your ideas- do you have anything in mind for Gord dearest?
Please, call me milky!
Anyway …Gorrrrrrrd! Gord was my first love, he was the first NPC i heard speak when i played the game (past this is your school, obvs) and he’s the one that hit me over the head with the autism sledgehammer. i want to scrunch him up and throw him in a wood chipper
GORD VENDOME HCS
He’s the cuntiest bitch on the bullworth academy campus and I’m literally not going to accept any form of argument, he came out of the womb wearing aquaberry. He lives and breathes it, its his lifeblood. He plans his walk around school to and from each class, checking the weather to make sure he if needs to tweak any parts of the route so that’s he has the best chance of getting every student to see how effortless, demure and graceful he is in his choice of fine clothes, jewellery and hair care. No one is fooled by him, they know it takes a hell of a lot of effort.
Gord does a closet reshuffle every 6 months or so, just to make sure all his clothes are on trend and in season. This is standard prep procedure, but what makes Gord’s rearranging so special is that he literally cannot bear to throw anything away. He attaches memories to every stitch of fabric he’s ever put on his body, he’s a work of art and therefore every single outfit he’s ever worn simply has to be memorialised, he can’t throw it all away. His father has dedicated several houses just to the backlog of Gord’s discarded clothing. There’s more than enough in there to fully stock several Aquaberry locations for literal decades.
He gets dreadful hay fever, its actually kind of disgusting to look at him if he hasn’t taken an antihistamine. Luckily very few people have ever seen him like that, he has several boxes on his person at all times during the spring and summer. He just doesnt have the heart to tell Jimmy about his pollen allergy, so when he’s given flowers he has to hold all of his sneezes in. This then makes his eyes water, and therefore makes Jimmy think he’s so overjoyed with the gift that he’s moved to tears. Luckily for gord he keeps several hand stitched silk handkerchiefs on his person at all times, initialled with thread made of spun gold, he’s not some kind of common mutt that uses disposable tissues.
Gord is a rather talented pianist, he was given the choice as a child to either play polo with his father, or take piano lessons. The thought of the latter made him so lightheaded he thought that he was having a heart attack so he chose to play piano instead. His family have a very nice grand piano in their house’s foyer, but a separate, dedicated room for music practice with an equally expensive, but less aesthetically pleasing piano. On special occasions when the Vendomes wanted to show off, they’d plonk Gord in front of the piano and set him loose. It was usually Schubert or Bach to show how deeply cultured their young son was; but in his personal time, Gord found he much preferred to play the works of more modern classical composers, Leonard Cohen was a particular favourite in his early teens. He doesn’t play all that often nowadays, he’s much too busy, but every time he thinks he might be forgetting he’ll spend an hour or so playing through the giant stack of sheet music he’s accumulated over the years.
His cologne is one of a kind, hand mixed by a company in Milan, its tailored to him and only him and was originally a gift for his 10th birthday. It’s more feminine smelling than most colognes but he thinks it makes him stand out more, he’s not a traditionally masculine guy, so he likes that his cologne reflects that. He’s been gifted many other scents, usually from distant relatives or prospective marriage candidates that dont really know him but they’re just not the same.
Actually got bullied so insanely hard for his ears when he was a kid that he refused to leave the house without a hat on. Even when he first came to bullworth kids weren’t the nicest to him. His ears are a big source of insecurity for him and he is in the process of convincing his father to let him get surgery to tuck them in. His satellite dishes are so cute and he should never get rid of them but its not really up to me.
Comforts Pinky when Derby forgets about every single one of their dates, he takes her shopping for whatever she wants, to dinner someplace exclusive (he always makes reservations on days when those two have dates, he just knows Derby will bail), and then back to Harrington house to watch movies. He openly cries at the sad parts of the romcoms they inevitably end up watching, often more so than Pinky.
Holds a fondness for poor people that not even he himself can fully explain. If he had to pinpoint it, its their freedoms. They’re free to be content with nothing, or to work to fix it, they dont start at an advantage in life and therefore get to enjoy the ride a little bit more. Thats his rose tinted view of it anyway, obviously he hasn’t the time to spend creating a nuanced understanding of his infatuation, he just accepts it as part of his psyche and moves on with his own, utterly fabulous life.

the last convention i went to i was discussing trek with a guy and he triumphantly declared that reboot uhura is "a SLUT" and the look of panic in his eyes when he realised i wasn't laughing and just cringing was palpable. he went on to explain that "uhura never needed to be a love interest, she was better than that" oh lord
firstly, committed relationship with one man does not equal slut
more importantly: uhura wasn't allowed to be a love interest in the sixties due to racism. gene, leonard and nichelle wanted spock & uhura to be a thing but it literally was not allowed during those days. spock and uhura kissing and being together in the trek reboot movies is a show of how far we've come since then
im also frustrated with the notion that being in a romantic relationship diminishes a woman, in real life or in fiction
love, romance and sexuality does not subtract from a woman
yes, many female characters are reduced to love interests and nothing else, due to sexist writing. but that really doesnt apply to reboot uhura. for one thing, this is where they canonized her being a linguistics genius. and furthermore, feminism looks different for different types of women. white female love interests are dime a dozen, but its still to this day progressive for black women to be love interests because theres been a history of black women being underrepresented in media in general, including as people being worthy of being loved. i think that's an important thing for all oppressed groups to see in fiction. to love and be loved
did the reboot trek movies have any of this in mind? i fucking doubt it. do those movies have sexist writing? oh yeah. but man, uhura and spock being together was never a bad decision
long ago i saw a black woman say "i love seeing a woman like me be loved by spock" and ya know what? fuck everybody else, the star trek reboot movies are for her specifically. i think many trekkies can agree that being loved by spock would be an extra special honour
thank you for your time
#obviously i did not go over this to the man. i said some positive things about uhura and then gently steered to convo to something else#im very protective of spock/uhura. when i was a teenager i had to pretend to not like this pairing so i could avoid being BULLIED#fuck all of that#and the way people have talked about and still talk about uhura is fucking vile#i used to be in two reboot trek fanfic groups that had to be shut down due to sexism and racism. it was absolutely fucked#and to see this attitude alive and well in 2024 is insane to me#not just this guy. i still see some bad shit online#anyways putting all that aside. they're a lovely couple and their kisses are so nice and tender!

I hear so much about Total Drama needing toxic yuri, but forget that–we need some toxic yaoi.
Give me Duncan x Harold, where Duncan has a steamy love affair with Harold behind Courtney’s back and still wedgies and punches Harold in public to not make things suspicious.
I raise you one “Alejandro x Owen”, where Owen continually tries to impress his one true love, but it’s never enough because he keeps calling him “Al”, so Alejandro just beats the crap out of Owen relentlessly and reminisces about his relationship with Izzy–who was equally physically aggressive but did it with a smile on her face, at least.
How about some Scike? In which Scott blackmails Mike into staying with him by lording his DID secret over his head, along with the fact that he secretly uses the exact same spray-tan as Anne Maria. And in turn, whenever Vito or Manitoba front, they aggressively flirt with a severely uncomfortable Scott in their respective New-Jersey and Australian accents.
Or maybe Dave x Leonard is more your style? Dave can emotionally abuse Leonard by continually discouraging, disparaging, demeaning, and diminishing Leonard’s LARPing and wizardry with sarcastic insults, and Leonard can physically abuse Dave by wacking him over the head with his wand whenever he does so? They both hate each other, but as the only two queer boys on that fake Cree island, they’re all the other has.

Interview with Niall Horan, ex frontman of One Direction
If the global success with One Direction is now far behind, the fortune that Niall Horan is enjoying as a solo artists is very current. His third album was just released. Emblematic title: The Show, and the show could not get better than this. Article by Leonardo Clausi
Precisely because this is the new age of anxiety (from the title of the poem by W. H. Auden The Age of Anxiety, 1947, and from Symphony n. 2 by Leonard Bernstein inspired by it, 1949), Public Health around the world should prescribe listening to Niall Horan. As anti-anxiety medicine, tonic for the psyche, emotionally restorative medicine. Really, who else in the modern soft rock world is as capable of tuning in for ten tracks on an equally balmy wavelength, without ever straying into drama or comedy, as Horan does on The Show, third album since he went solo after the dissolution of One Direction, the (boy)band who competed with the Beatles in music sales? Not even the much more wanted colleague Harry Styles, with his unapologetic Bowie-ism that annoyed Tony Visconti so much.
30-year-old Horan doesn't have the same ambitions. We could easily ask him to go and pick out our daughter from school because he is so.. fragrant? Since 2016 - without stopping except from when forced by the pandemic - he's been writing music and bringing it on tour. A constant motion of three albums, the feverish craftsmanship of a diligent entertainer devoted to the career that he was raised in thanks to the shortcut, sometimes a brutal one, with which talent shows have short-circuited the discography and industry of A&R (Artists and Repertoire). We intercept him as he drives, always busy as a bee. "I just came back from America yesterday. Today I am in Liverpool. It's constant travelling, I spend most of my time jetlagged". He is understandably satisfied with his latest discographic effort, which will become the center of the homonymous The Show Live on Tour, with the Italian stop on 21st March 2024 at the Mediolanum Forum in Milan: "I spent a lot of time writing and producing it during the pandemic and the year after. I’m happy, the response has been very, very interesting around the world". Not surprising, considering the melodic quality of the tracks, touched by the Californian light of the Laurel Canyon, with vocal harmonies reminiscent of the Beach Boys, and references to the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. "I trusted that I could write a song. I knew I had the ability to do it. I just needed to trust that I could get a guitar, or sit at a piano, and something good would come out of it. It's out, but you never know. I need to keep my head down, work hard and see".
The 70s were his first introduction to music through records (or vinyls, as hipsters say), which were floating around the house; the real love however started "when I realised how lucky I was to have grown up with music that stayed with me to this day. My parents had a large album collection. I still listen to a lot of them now. When I’m in the studio I often use analogue mixing desks, it’s an important part of the sound I’m looking for". Speaking of the search for the 'organic' sound that digital audio is not able to embody all the way, what does he think of artificial intelligence, now that creators in the entertainment industry are taking the streets as well to protest against forcibly becoming obsolete? "Artificial intelligence can really do a lot, but it can’t give you that feeling that I call the human touch. It couldn’t write 'Hey Jude' or any other masterpiece. Humans will always have the upper hand".
Horan's Irishness is a prominent element of his personality, that proud affability that made his country a cultural superpower despite its size. And that was worth the warm reception of none other than the POTUS, who is also a descendent of the Celtic diaspora. "For how small the nation is, the relevance we have worldwide is amazing. Only five million inhabitants, and yet our culture of drinking, night life, musical or literary traditions are known everywhere. It's something I always keep in mind and want to show off as much as possible. And yes, I was invited at Washington to meet Joe Biden". Understandably, the fact excites him: "It was crazy that someone from a small town like mine (Mullingar, northwest of Ireland, ed.) ended up playing for the President of the United States at the White House. I still can't believe it". Not to mention the fact that, from a particularly bigot and conservative society that it once was, Ireland is now one of the most advanced and liberal ones of the West. "I'm not sure how it happened, but I am very proud of it. It was great to see it become one of the first countries to have gay marriage, for example. And I’m proud that it’s acting as a catalyst for change in other countries".
And does he know U2, this compatriot up and coming group? Would he collaborate with them? "Some of my all time favourite songs are by U2, their shows are some of the best I’ve ever been to. It would be great to do something with them if they ever ask". Coming from one of the best selling bands meant that there was a challenging precedent to compete with. But Niall Horan is doing great. It's impossible to refrain from asking about a 1D reunion. "It’s a busy time for everyone, so no, not that I know of. We keep in touch but everyone’s doing their own thing. Louis is touring in America, Liam is working on his music, Harry’s busy on the biggest world tour... In fact, if you hear about a reunion, please let me know".

Hehe I would love a director commentary on The Ghost of You and Me :))) my carraville fic of all time
Director's commentary: come into my ask box and ask for the “director’s commentary” on a particular story, section of a story, or set of lines. Or, send in a ⭐star⭐ to have me select a section they’ve been dying to talk about!
Aaaaa thank you so much kakey! I posted the ghosts of you and me in August 2020 and even though I am aware of some of its technical flaws and even though it's been 4.5 years since then in which time I have written many other stories I am fond of, it remains still the favourite thing I have written. To the point that if someone was only going to read one story by me, or my fics were going to get destroyed and I could only save one, it would be that one. So it means a whole lot to me that it's a fave of yours too :') This got long so under the rest under the cut-
To offer actual commentary, a little known fact is that to me ghosts is a part of a duo, with my willypasta fic, between your love and mine, its spiritual companion. While they are for two very different ships in two different fandoms, they both explore the damage wrought by not only homophobia but being forced to choose between two warring parts of your identity and being told they must always be at odds, that one negates the other.
In between your love and mine, that pressure and danger is acute: you have two young men who are told they must choose between hockey and one another, whose wings are clipped before they can learn how to fly. Ghosts then is the flip side of that coin: Carra and Gary are both retired. Gary has been quasi-out within his own circles for years, and there is very little actual risk from them pursuing a relationship now. And yet part of the reason why they crash and burn so spectacularly the first time around is because they too have been mangled by the same pressure and forced choice in all the time they were playing, and just because the actual danger goes away does not mean its effects do too.
I have personally always felt this same tension and choice between on one hand being queer and on the other Turkish, where both sides seem to say: choose. And ultimately that's what both stories are - an exploration of that, refracted through a prism of hockey and football, and probably why they are so dear to me.
In that way the Leonard Cohen lyrics I used for between your love and mine apply equally to both stories: I wish there was a treaty we could sign. It’s over now, the water and the wine. We were broken then, but now we are borderline. And I wish there was a treaty; I wish there was a treaty, between your love and mine.
Finally, re ghosts, I do think about your point that making gnev the Gay One TM is not the most sensible trend fandom follows, and what the story may have looked like, were their roles switched - because I think you are onto something.

Quincy Jones
Musician, producer and arranger who had global hits with Michael Jackson, was the first black composer to find acceptance in Hollywood and won 28 Grammys
From the 1980s onwards, Quincy Jones, who has died aged 91, was best known for his production and arranging work with Michael Jackson, not least because his efforts on Jackson’s album Thriller helped make it one of the bestselling albums in pop history. But the superstar glare surrounding his work with Jackson tended to conceal the fact that there were many more layers to Jones’s abilities.
He worked with jazz stars such as Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie, became a friend and collaborator of Frank Sinatra, and developed a flourishing career as a composer of soundtracks for film and TV. He enjoyed success under his own name in styles ranging from big-band jazz and swing to pop, soul and funk. He became an influential music business executive, a successful entrepreneur in film and TV production and launched the music magazine VIBE.
He was born in Chicago, the son of Quincy Jones Sr, a carpenter and semi-pro baseball player, and his wife, Sarah (nee Wells), a building manager. His parents divorced, Quincy Sr remarried, and the family moved to Bremerton, Washington, during the second world war, then to Seattle. Quincy Jr began playing the trumpet and singing in a gospel quartet at the age of 12, and when he met up with the teenaged Ray Charles, also based in the Seattle area, Charles encouraged him to take an interest in arranging. A course at the Berklee College of Music in Boston set Jones up for his first professional job, in 1951, with the bandleader Lionel Hampton.
His experiences on the road with the Hampton band were an eye-opener. “You couldn’t stay in white hotels, and to me, coming from Seattle, a lot of this stuff was like a slap in the face,” he said. “Back then, all the black bands had white bus drivers so they could eat, ’cos you couldn’t go into white restaurants. Even in Philadelphia, they had segregated hotels.” Jones left Hampton in 1953, having accompanied the band on a European tour and rubbed shoulders with a remarkable lineup of musicians including the trumpeters Clifford Brown and Art Farmer.
He set about making a living writing arrangements for jazz luminaries including Basie and Tommy Dorsey. Although Jones put in a stint as musical director for Gillespie’s ensemble in 1956, he was aware that the days of the big bands were numbered, and rock’n’roll was coming. “In a funny way, Lionel Hampton was one of the bands that was serious with a rock’n’roll sensibility, before we even knew what the word meant,” Jones said.
During 1957 and 1958, Jones based himself in France and Scandinavia. He continued to study composition – notably with Nadia Boulanger, mentor of Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland, among others – and took a job with Barclay Disques, the Paris-based subsidiary of Mercury Records. While in Europe he formed a star-studded big band of his own, and spent two years touring Europe and the US. He wrote material for Count Basie, and during the late 1950s and early 60s worked as an arranger and music director on recording sessions for vocalists including Billy Eckstine, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan.
In 1964, Jones won his first Grammy award, for his arrangement of Basie’s song I Can’t Stop Loving You. He also produced four million-selling singles for Lesley Gore, including the US chart-topper and UK Top 10 hit It’s My Party (1963). His hectic career was matched by an equally eventful private life. In his memoir Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones (2001), he described how at one point he was dating five women at the same time.
His burgeoning profile was boosted by collaborations with Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr and Andy Williams. Jones’s association with Sinatra produced the albums It Might As Well Be Swing (1964) and Sinatra at the Sands (1966), both featuring Basie’s band. Jones and Sinatra became close friends, Jones later writing that Sinatra was “hip, straight up and straight ahead, and above all, a monster musician”.
Jones’s track record gained him entry into the lucrative fields of film and television, and he became the first black composer to find acceptance within Hollywood. Throughout the late 60s and 70s he was commissioned to write scores for more than 30 movies and hundreds of TV shows. Among his better-known film projects are In Cold Blood (1967), In the Heat of the Night (1967), The Italian Job (1969) and The Getaway (1972). The theme from Ironside is his most instantly recognisable effort for the small screen, but his compositions for The Bill Cosby Show, Sanford and Son and his Emmy-winning work for the miniseries Roots proved enduringly popular.
As the 70s wore on, Jones displayed his instinct for moving with prevailing musical trends by immersing himself in funk and disco music. His album Body Heat, from 1974, featured the Brothers Johnson as the rhythm section, and Jones subsequently produced bestselling albums by the Brothers Johnson themselves.
Despite undergoing surgery to deal with twin brain aneurysms in 1974, Jones continued to work at a furious pace. He produced chart-busting albums for the disco queen Donna Summer and soul diva Aretha Franklin, and he found another musical soulmate in the guitarist George Benson. Their collaboration on Give Me the Night (1980) – the debut release on Jones’s Qwest label – was another career benchmark, the album reaching No 3 on the US album chart while the title track was a No 4 single.
Meanwhile Jones had hits under his own name. He had a US Top 30 success with Stuff Like That (1978), and in 1981 scored a Top 10 album with The Dude, which spun off the Top 30 hit Ai No Corrida (No 4 in the UK), and the Top 20 hits Just Once and One Hundred Ways, both featuring James Ingram. In 1998, the hit movie Austin Powers prompted a revival of Quincy’s 1962 hip-shaker, Soul Bossa Nova; it was also used as a theme for the 1998 football World Cup in France.
Jones first met Michael Jackson, then aged 12, at Davis Jr’s house, but it was not until Jones was working on the soundtrack for the film The Wiz (1978), starring Jackson and Diana Ross, that he was invited to produce a Jackson solo album. This was the 20m-selling Off the Wall (1979). Their collaboration continued with Thriller (1982) and Bad (1987), the trio selling 100m copies between them. In between, Jones was also the natural choice to produce the 1985 charity single, We Are the World, co-written by Jackson and Lionel Richie and performed by the all-star USA For Africa to benefit Ethiopian famine victims.
Jones was a pivotal figure in helping musicians take control of the business side of their work. Like most other musicians, he had grown accustomed in the early years of his career to having his royalties and copyrights appropriated by unscrupulous publishers or record labels. “If you write a song, the publishing is 50% of that,” Jones explained. “They would say: ‘I want 50% of your creation’, so that means you get 25%. That was normal.” He began to see the light when he took a job as A&R man at Mercury Records in New York in 1961. Within two years, he was made a vice-president, making him the first high-level black executive of a major record label. “I’d lost so much money when I had my band [the Jones Boys] in Europe that I had to go with a record company. That’s when I said: ‘I’d better pay attention to the other side, because it is a music business.’”
After moving from Mercury to A&M Records he launched Qwest, which became home to such varied artists as New Order, Milt Jackson, the Winans and Tevin Campbell. Qwest also did excellent business with the soundtracks to Malcolm X (1992) and the rap-generation movie Boyz N the Hood (1991).
Growing into the role of entertainment mogul, Jones co-produced Steven Spielberg’s film of The Color Purple in 1985 and produced its soundtrack. In 1990 he teamed up with Time Warner Inc to form Quincy Jones Entertainment; in 1991 he helped create the NBC television series The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, which launched Will Smith on the road to superstardom; and in 1993 he set up VIBE. He headed a consortium of businessmen that formed Qwest Broadcasting, which purchased TV stations in Atlanta and New Orleans.
Jones won an Emmy, 28 Grammys and three Special Grammy awards, including the Grammy Legend award in 1992, was given the Sammy Cahn lifetime achievement award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1989, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. He was showered with honorary doctorates, Time magazine declared him one of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century, and in 1990 he was made a chevalier of the Légion d’honneur, promoted to commander in 2001.
He was celebrated in the film Listen Up: The Lives of Quincy Jones (1990) and the documentary Quincy (2018), directed by his daughter Rashida.
Three marriages ended in divorce. He is survived by a daughter, Jolie, from the first, to Jeri Caldwell; a daughter, Martina, and son, Quincy, from the second, to Ulla Andersson; two daughters, Rashida and Kikada, from the third, to Peggy Lipton; and by a daughter, Kenya, from a relationship with Nastassja Kinski, and a daughter, Rachel, with Carol Reynolds.
