thoughts on Ginny and Harry as a couple?

There are a lot of people who find their romance in HBP forced. I don't think it's forced so much as underwritten, and the books don't get the chemistry quite right (though the movies certainly don't, either). There's potential, but they just don't get enough actual scenes of substance (besides Harry thinking she's pretty or feeling jealous of Dean) for a lot of readers to buy that they're not only in love, but deeply enough in love to break up, get back together, and wind up married.

That's not to say I don't see the appeal. There's a very cool scene in Book 5 where Harry's doing a woe-is-me-Chosen-One act, and Ginny effortlessly puts him in his place about it by reminding him that she was possessed by Voldemort at eleven, which is a rare glimpse into her character and also a great synecdoche for their relationship — Ginny is a grounding presence who, like Ron and Hermione, isn't going to be awed by his past adventures because she knew him before they happened. In that respect, Ginny's probably one of the few women Harry could feasibly wind up with, because he only ever seems comfortable around people (let alone girls) who can see past the Chosen-One schtick and treat him like a normo (see: Ron, Hermione, the Weasleys, Luna, Hagrid). True to type, he doesn't get interested in Ginny at all until she's ditched her celebrity crush and ceased to view him as an idol, because in his heart of hearts, Harry wants to be a normal boy, and it's stressed over and over that part of what he likes about his relationship with Ginny is how normal it feels. He kind of has a horribly supercharged version the celebrity dating problem: after the Battle of Hogwarts, anyone he meets is going to know him first as Harry Potter, Chosen One, Boy Who Lived, and Actually Fucking Resurrected Messiah of the Wizarding World, which is... I mean, it's possible that there are witches out there who could get over that, but Harry's not an extroverted guy, and I'm not sure how he'd go about finding them. Ginny's the one who's been there since the beginning, doesn't need anything about him or his past explained to her, and actually likes him for who he is.

When you look at it that way, it's not surprising he married his high school girlfriend. She's one of the few people still alive who doesn't see him as a demigod.

#in general I was never one to ship harry with anybody #what I wanted for him was a long quiet life and plenty of therapy #maybe some dogs. i think harry needs dogs and deserves them #The other obvious solution ftr — though not one I think Harry would take — is for him to marry a muggle #though again. you'd run into the problem of how you explain All That #which harry doesn't like to talk about and probably would want to talk about even less as an adult #plus also: harry loves magic. like he loves it loves it #the muggle world for harry is permanently connected with the dursleys and it would take years to break that association #which I just don't think he's going to invest #Harry post-BOH is moving to Hogsmeade or wizarding London or some other magical neighborhood and staying there forever #by the way this post is not anti Harry and Ginny! no hate on the ship I've seen versions of it that are very cute #but I just think their love story needed Sauce #there are also some really interesting posts I've found in Deep Fandom crackship blogs about h/g as Harry's sublimated desire for Ron #now I don't necessarily buy that reading. I don't think Harry is in love with Ron in the original text #I do think he LOVES ron and projects that love onto the Weasleys very quickly ginny included #and I think Ron is his soulmate platonic or otherwise in every universe #so marrying Ginny has like. Implications. vis-a-vis Harry's status as a Weasley and adoptive brother[in law] of Ron #like it's a full-circle moment where he becomes officially legally a member of Ron's family #which I do believe JKR had in mind. even though that basically means ginny's wedding becomes kinda... actually... about her brother...#it's weird basically. my final verdict is I wish H/G had been written by an author who was more interested in Ginny for Ginny's sake.#greenteacup asks

This is a random one and I hope it's okay to ask. I just noticed that Faber's fic (UTR) is tagged for Polyamory and has a Kenneth Leone relationship listed as well as Caleb. I was wondering if you could say more about how this poly will work out? I'm definitely going to still read because I love Faber and Caleb and your writing, but I have to confess (and this is 100% a me problem!!) that reading poly can make me really anxious and I often avoid it for that reason. I am sorry to say that if you know the tag is a problem for you in advance, that's probably your answer, and something you can reflect and/or work on given being polyamorous is being a minority group that is already oppressed.

I don't plan my stories in advance, so I couldn't answer this anyway, because I don't know exactly what's going to happen or how it's going to work out. That's why the story didn't start off with a Polyamory tag. It's developed heavily in that direction over time.

I wish you fortune in working through the things that cause you anxiety, and understanding that it is not an oppressed minority group that causes anxiety, but the actions of individuals, and the prejudices we hold and indulge.

first thing you need to understand- Nico is a freak. the other Bishops aren't great people either, they abuse their power over citizens too (YES, even Keons), but NO ONE does as much fucked up shit as Nico. he is an outlier. you think your Bishop is bad because he's physically abusive? Oh, buddy. if you only knew what's going on in Nico's district, you'd know better than to complain.

that being said, obviously, not every single citizen deals with it to the same extent. it's a huge city, most people are going to fly under his radar. So Nico has favorites, y'know? people (victims) he takes a particular interest in. those people generally bear the brunt of his freak-ness.

Clancy is one of those favorites. no- Clancy is THE favorite. the favorite OF the favorites. you could interpret this in a million different ways, how long has he had his eye on Clancy? why him in particular? I, honestly, don't have any specific answers to those questions that I consider better than any others. all I know is that Nico is COMPLETELY obsessed with him. unhealthily obsessed. he is deranged.

now, as for Clancy, I don't personally have any specific timeline or details that I subscribe to more than others, but during SAI, he's obviously getting super messed up. idk if I'll be able to explain this right >:[ but I'm gonna try

Nico's sadistic. Obviously. He enjoys Clancy being in pain, he enjoys his suffering immensely. Nico would probably hit him for no reason, just to see him cry. He does... even worse things to make him cry too.

But that isn't enough. like I said, Nico is deranged. Imprisoning him isn't enough, beating and torturing him ISN'T ENOUGH. Nico wants to own him not just physically, he wants to mentally break him too. Not just to the point of obedience, like the others do, he wants to be Clancy's everything. He wants worship. He wants the sun to rise and set with him. He wants Clancy to look at him like he put the fucking stars in the sky. he NEEDS that, he needs Clancy to feed his ego.

and do not even get me STARTED on how much worse it gets when you add smearing into the mix...

as for, like, other hcs about what their dynamic is like. idk I feel like publicly, in front of other Bishops, Nico at least TRIES to keep up a facade of normalcy. doesn't always go well, anyone who pays even 0.01% attention (Keons) winds up going 🤨🤨🤨, but he tries. privately, I feel like they're both really touchy/ clingy? Clancy's the clingy one, he's so touch starved / deprived of any kind of affection, he's constantly seeking it out, even if he's still bleeding from injuries Nico made not five minutes ago. Nico's less clingy, more... creepily physical? He's constantly moving Clancy around instead of just asking him to move himself, he always has an arm around him or a hand touching him or whatever.

man i hate that one teacher ruined the whole concept of math for me bc i love physics and string theory and chemistry and all that stuff but every time I'm watching a video about it i hear like. specific algebraic concepts and i immediately lose all interest

when I was in high school there was a tendency whenever there was an attractive boy to simply fan over him. in a way that talked over everything he might say for himself and created a narrative that completely ignored, the fact in some cases, that he was really struggling—or if he was struggling, to pin all the blame on the girl he’s dating and completely ignore the thousands of other factors (no it can’t be mental illness or unaccommodated disability or systemic abuse or exploitation and if he is in an abusive relationship we won’t ever consider the factors that put him at risk for that)

and I’m not saying this fandom is like that. I get the need for privacy around some things and how in public conversations sometimes it’s a lot more respectful to stick to the positives (everyone who does that, I admire you) or even the struggles that are talked about publicly, show respect by not reading too far into them. there’s a time and place for that. but sometimes I feel like our only options are shitty and ableist gossip or totally ignoring the systemic and structural issues we know exist in something like the music industry until someone dies and then we’re looking for someone to blame. friends, there is a point where the respectful thing is to listen to what someone says and come together to make things better. and you can learn how to have that conversation respectfully. please do

I’m doing all I can; I’m not on the ground there I’m at a distance #but at the same time is it not bittersweet sometimes to enjoy music born from trauma? to be at a live show knowing they shouldn’t be?#to me these stories have to be told for the reason that yes so people relate but also so we can do better for the next generation #anyway I’ve gotten deep into inxs lore lately and I can say. yes it is better for 5sos simply for the fact men can talk about emotions #but that didn’t come without a MASSIVE fight don’t you ever forget that. it’s gonna still carry shame. they’re choosing to fight that #but the sad songs we got as a result?? idk they’re the thing that turned me parasocial because there’s rarely absolutely nothing you can do #like if we’re ever gonna give them a gold star for talking about this stuff as early as sgfg til today we gotta ask ourselves to look at #larger systemic issues and stuff that we ARE a part of and while we can’t be there for them when they have a bad day. we can work on #anyway the high school example still haunts me. still drives some of what I do now. we were just kids. but most of us here aren’t anymore #and the newbrokenscene is grown up now and tbh the status quo should be TERRIFIED #so idk. at the very least sign the petition for liams law. advocate for better. address local issues of injustice and addiction etc #which in some ways I’m lucky that I get to do that in sydney so it feels connected but this is just as valuable anywhere #tbh the 2010s era of bubblegum pop and ignoring all our problems is over. you’re punk now. even katy released chained to the rhythm #thinking about the nfp I’m trying to start and how to start small. for disadvantaged kids maybe? intervening via urban design?#(don’t you ever forget 5sos WERE disadvantaged kids not even 20 years ago. that shit sticks to you no matter how much you achieve)#albums and activism #anyway it fascinates me to see how differently people do this kind of thing to each band member. like the vibe is different but still track #for this whole phenomenon like whether they’re seen as pretty or strong or cute or smth else that becomes the main thing not their words #and I say that but tumblr is pretty good overall. I just wish sometimes we could have a more active conversation before any tragedy #so gosh I’m ranting so much but PLEASE talk about this with me. You know I see these posts about how maturity should be the standard and i start to agree untill i realize just how many fucking conversations ive had about maturity not even being a real thing??

Like people will believe what they will but i have times even niw as a fully grown adult that i recognize i am absolutely not fucking mature at all. And i stop myself then and ask what the hell maturity is, and every time i look it up because i want a source that isnt just my brain, i get a completely different answer. It really depends if you get it from merriam webster or this one guy on quora. One maybe be far more credible, but its not just one guy on quora. Ots a whole lot of people saying very different things to the actual definition of what mature is. This indicates that either education globally is fucking awful (which may not be wrong tbf) or that possibly what we understand to be matuity is a complex and nuanced thing that is unmeasurable and is probably sonething else actually

Like i dont know what fucking metric you want to use for "if this person consents to having medical bills" or whatever but if it isnt age then maybe something more concrete and physically measurable than maturity? Or maybe if we *cannot* have sonething concrete and measurable because that thing doesnt exist somehow, then perhaps we can say "to each their own" and just go with what the person fucking says they want?

I dont know about yall but i feel like im saying and not saying so much here. But like. Maybe let people make their own choices. Their own mistakes. And help them so that those mistakes are reversible. Other than that i dont feel like i should get a say in what someone else does. Just. End of story.

one of the dramas from the wedding was one of the grooms cousins (on the other side not mine) just not wearing the clothes we had made for her specifically
