thoughts on Ginny and Harry as a couple?
There are a lot of people who find their romance in HBP forced. I don't think it's forced so much as underwritten, and the books don't get the chemistry quite right (though the movies certainly don't, either). There's potential, but they just don't get enough actual scenes of substance (besides Harry thinking she's pretty or feeling jealous of Dean) for a lot of readers to buy that they're not only in love, but deeply enough in love to break up, get back together, and wind up married.
That's not to say I don't see the appeal. There's a very cool scene in Book 5 where Harry's doing a woe-is-me-Chosen-One act, and Ginny effortlessly puts him in his place about it by reminding him that she was possessed by Voldemort at eleven, which is a rare glimpse into her character and also a great synecdoche for their relationship — Ginny is a grounding presence who, like Ron and Hermione, isn't going to be awed by his past adventures because she knew him before they happened. In that respect, Ginny's probably one of the few women Harry could feasibly wind up with, because he only ever seems comfortable around people (let alone girls) who can see past the Chosen-One schtick and treat him like a normo (see: Ron, Hermione, the Weasleys, Luna, Hagrid). True to type, he doesn't get interested in Ginny at all until she's ditched her celebrity crush and ceased to view him as an idol, because in his heart of hearts, Harry wants to be a normal boy, and it's stressed over and over that part of what he likes about his relationship with Ginny is how normal it feels. He kind of has a horribly supercharged version the celebrity dating problem: after the Battle of Hogwarts, anyone he meets is going to know him first as Harry Potter, Chosen One, Boy Who Lived, and Actually Fucking Resurrected Messiah of the Wizarding World, which is... I mean, it's possible that there are witches out there who could get over that, but Harry's not an extroverted guy, and I'm not sure how he'd go about finding them. Ginny's the one who's been there since the beginning, doesn't need anything about him or his past explained to her, and actually likes him for who he is.
When you look at it that way, it's not surprising he married his high school girlfriend. She's one of the few people still alive who doesn't see him as a demigod.
#in general I was never one to ship harry with anybody#what I wanted for him was a long quiet life and plenty of therapy#maybe some dogs. i think harry needs dogs and deserves them#The other obvious solution ftr — though not one I think Harry would take — is for him to marry a muggle#though again. you'd run into the problem of how you explain All That#which harry doesn't like to talk about and probably would want to talk about even less as an adult#plus also: harry loves magic. like he loves it loves it#the muggle world for harry is permanently connected with the dursleys and it would take years to break that association#which I just don't think he's going to invest#Harry post-BOH is moving to Hogsmeade or wizarding London or some other magical neighborhood and staying there forever#by the way this post is not anti Harry and Ginny! no hate on the ship I've seen versions of it that are very cute#but I just think their love story needed Sauce#there are also some really interesting posts I've found in Deep Fandom crackship blogs about h/g as Harry's sublimated desire for Ron#now I don't necessarily buy that reading. I don't think Harry is in love with Ron in the original text#I do think he LOVES ron and projects that love onto the Weasleys very quickly ginny included#and I think Ron is his soulmate platonic or otherwise in every universe#so marrying Ginny has like. Implications. vis-a-vis Harry's status as a Weasley and adoptive brother[in law] of Ron#like it's a full-circle moment where he becomes officially legally a member of Ron's family#which I do believe JKR had in mind. even though that basically means ginny's wedding becomes kinda... actually... about her brother...#it's weird basically. my final verdict is I wish H/G had been written by an author who was more interested in Ginny for Ginny's sake.#greenteacup asks

rules: post 7 sentences/a snippet of an unfinished work
@theotherwhybietoldmeso & @killerandhealerqueen
I'm late, I'm late, I'm late. Forgive me. I was fighting demons (imposter syndrome, crippling self doubt, fatigue, and a wild pack of mental illnesses). (◕દ◕) But! I'm finally back after like three ass weeks. <( ̄︶ ̄)> So, here! A v unserious snippy from my we have to stay silly modern kidlaw au (yeah, shocker, it's them bastards again) that I've been doing sometimes on the side just for shits n giggles. 〜(꒪꒳꒪)〜
The call connected and Killer's accent crackled out of the speaker. “Law? What's up?”
“Nothing urgent. I just need to know if Eustass h—”
“Yeah, his phone’s dead again. He's in the shed. You want him?”
“What?”
“Hang on. I'll get him.”
Law pinched the bridge of his nose. Squeezed his eyes shut till he saw pinpricks. “No, I just need to know if—”
"Oi, Kid! Your boyfriend wants to speak ta ya!"
Law snapped his eyes back open and nearly crushed his phone as his hand clenched in a useless attempt to smother the speaker.
Ahead of him in the aisle, hands in his pockets, Cora stopped. His leg held out in front of him as he froze mid-stride.
Dammit.
After a beat, as if he'd been waiting for what he'd heard to start making a little more sense, Cora slowly turned on his heel. His other leg still stuck out in front of him and the hem of his heart-covered button-up twirling with him.
He stared wide-eyed at Law. The embodiment of flabbergasted. His raised boot absently clicking down on the supermarkets’ bland tiling like an accompanying exclamation point.
Dammit!
"He's not my damn boyfriend!" Eustass yelled, taking the words out of Law's mouth.
The heavy rock blasting from the shed’s stereo lowered enough in volume to not blow out Law's phone speaker and Eustass' voice dropped several octaves as he brought Killer's phone up to his ear.
“Miss me, did ya, sweetheart?”
His eyes bulging, Cora took several steps back in bewilderment and tripped over one of the restocking boxes stacked in the aisle.
"Shut up, Eustass!" Law snapped. His face igniting alongside his fury. "You're on speaker!"
There was a pause so pregnant it had reached its third trimester. Then Eustass chuckled. It had a grotesque amount of facetious glee in it.
"Am I now?"
So. That had been a mistake. But Law could only double down now.
"Behave," he said through clenched teeth. "Or I'll—"
"You'll what? Don't go making promises you can't keep, princess."
Cora toppled back over the box trying to get up and landed on his back with his legs sticking straight up.
"I'm going to—!" Catching Cora's eye from down on the floor, Law sighed. "Doesn't matter. I'll deal with you later. Cora-san wants to know if you have any dietary restrictions.”
He scrunched down into his jacket. Tense. Gritting his teeth. Law still wasn't sure how Cora had talked him into letting him come over and cook dinner. But if it had been a bad idea before, it was a horrendous one now.
Eustass Kid was an arsehole. Always had been. Always would be. Always was. There wasn't a chance in hell he could be trusted not to—
"Hold up. Cora's there?"
"Yesss," Law hissed, ready to brain him.
“Put him on then.”
“Don't tell me what to do!”
Cora looked from Law to the phone and then accepted it when Law clicked his tongue on his teeth in irration and offered it down to him.
Tagging @schwazombie (no pressure. You keep working on those kidlawgust prompts if you're still on a roll 😊) and anyone else that wants to give it a whirl ✨✨
#weekend wip exposure club#look mum i didn't chicken out 👐#context: cora is a klutz in canon so that's why i'm making a fool of this man. Also because i love him dearly but that's besides the point#oh my words#from the dark pit#my agenda that kid calls law nearly every kinda cringe insulting 'endearment' he can to simply piss law off is going stronk.#look. it's the being an ass derogatory ribbing to eventual sarcastic but very affectionate pipeline for me. love a man that plays himself.#I hear you (no one. literally none one) saying 'but would law make the mistake of ringing killer (because of enthusiastic but misguided#insistence from cora) on speaker (also requested by cora) to ask about kid's food allergies (once again for cora) after kid wouldn't pick u#(idiot bastard doesn't hardly ever charge his phone. if it dies it dies. that's its problem. not his.) and then once getting handballed#without mercy (king shit move tbh killer) to the pain in the ass himself...not turn speaker phone off in 0.01 seconds??' and to that I say:#Look. He's been Having A Day okay. And it's fun to ruin law's life with shit like this because he makes it so easy takes it all so seriousl#.also. the scenario made me chuckle and the pursuit of joy gets the final word in this house so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#(peanut i had a whole bunch of Bepo centric ones i was trying to pick to use instead for you but i 🐥end out. we strive for next weekend 😌)#(zom i love the difference in tones of our modern aus. it makes me very happy.#your foot is in darkness (&Hope) and mine is in a Hello Kitty rollerskate 🤭)

The type of Christian who asks atheists how they don't like, murder people on the reg are so funny to me because they seem to think their religion makes them the Peak of Morality when statements like "if you don't believe in God how comes you don't do X thing" all but outright state they have no idea why shit like murder and rape is bad except that God doesn't like it lmao. Like way to admit you have no intrinsic sense of morality and need to be afraid of a higher power to be a decent person, but I promise if you're not a piece of shit it's actually very natural not to want to do heinous evil shit all the time potential punishment from a higher power or not 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
#winters ramblings#seriously its SO funny when that happens because every time its like ??? the FUCK kind of thoughts do you have#to ask HOW i resist doing evil shit all the time because i dont fear god because i dont believe in God??#what kind of fucked up person do you haveto be to only resist killing people because of fear of a higher power??#these are people to avoid because typically they also come with the issue of using their religion to make any action they want#perfectly Good and Moral because GOD said it its in the BIBLE whether thats true or not and like bible or no#if you have no intrinsic sense of morality i dont want to hear about atheist morality from you lmao#not that athiests lack issues i swear to god white dudes who evangelize atheism like its their new religion#have WILDLY missed the point and often suffer the same problem as the aforementioned Christians#wherein the onky thing thats ever given them any kind of pushback is the church so they decide RELIGION is horrible and bad as a whole#which isnt true religion can be a perfectly lovely amazing thing for people but that brand of atheist#doesnt seem to understand that people turned away from the church because of wide spread abuse and discrimination not because#believing in god makes you literally mentally ill like some of these fuckos act like. abelist AND shite to religious folks in one fowl swoop#so you know atheists have problems too but like they arent making laws in their beliefs images across the world so you know#temper the criticism with how influential the group actually is although richard dawkins types DID get a lot of space to spew their idiocy#like dawkims if you think youre SOOOO much smarter than christians how come you have ALL the same misogyny problems??#youre not that smart and logical if youve decided a whole kind of person is inherently less than you buddy. in fact thats very Christian#of him actually. funny when that happens but again if you dont actually know WHY something is a problem#its very easy to say Thats Bad and then literally do the exact same thing you just condemned because when YOU do it its no longer bad#because its got YOUR flavor of fucked up morality on it now instead of being like hmm maybe Christianity isnt a problem#because it EXISTS but because a lot of people use their religion as a pointed barb to discriminate against huge swaths of people#and often the intolerance becomes a legal issue when Christians and other religious majorities shove through laws based on EXCLUSIVELY their#religions and opinions and that doesnt mean religion should be dismantled it means we ahould tell religious folk who would know what#morality was if it fucked them up the ass to shut up and figure out what morality is outside of rekigion before they start legislating about#it and whatnot. also i wish extreme opinions werent ALL the news focused on exclusively on the political right#can we platform some NORMAL well adjusted christians who are god loving AND not a bunch of wingnuts#who are two steps away from arguing thou shall not kill only applies to people they LIKE because they dont seem to understand#maybe murder is bad when EVERYONE does it not just The Bad People??!?!

[Start ID. A drawing of @mieczmaszyna 's character Izzy. In the words of its creator, Izzy is a humanoid robot with a white chassis, oval head, black headset, square green glasses, claws, and a tail resembling a cable plug. Ai wears a cowboy hat, vest decorated by a star and bottle cap, pants with tassels, spurred boots, and a red bandanna. He's viewed from the side, kicking up one leg and holding both arms out in front of itself to shoot finger guns, looking excited and rather jaunty. The background is a dull yellow-green, muddied by the warm reddish tone of the drawing, and in paler green are the words "BANG BANG!!" by ais arms. End ID]

Alright uninformed rant time. It kind of bugs me that, when studying the Middle Ages, specifically in western Europe, it doesn’t seem to be a pre-requisite that you have to take some kind of “Basics of Mediaeval Catholic Doctrine in Everyday Practise” class.
Obviously you can’t cover everything- we don’t necessarily need to understand the ins and outs of obscure theological arguments (just as your average mediaeval churchgoer probably didn’t need to), or the inner workings of the Great Schism(s), nor how apparently simple theological disputes could be influenced by political and social factors, and of course the Official Line From The Vatican has changed over the centuries (which is why I’ve seen even modern Catholics getting mixed up about something that happened eight centuries ago). And naturally there are going to be misconceptions no matter how much you try to clarify things for people, and regional/class/temporal variations on how people’s actual everyday beliefs were influenced by the church’s rules.
But it would help if historians studying the Middle Ages, especially western Christendom, were all given a broadly similar training in a) what the official doctrine was at various points on certain important issues and b) how this might translate to what the average layman believed. Because it feels like you’re supposed to pick that up as you go along and even where there are books on the subject they’re not always entirely reliable either (for example, people citing books about how things worked specifically in England to apply to the whole of Europe) and you can’t ask a book a question if you’re confused about any particular point.
I mean I don’t expect to be spoonfed but somehow I don’t think that I’m supposed to accumulate a half-assed religious education from, say, a 15th century nobleman who was probably more interested in translating chivalric romances and rebelling against the Crown than religion; an angry 16th century Protestant; a 12th century nun from some forgotten valley in the Alps; some footnotes spread out over half a dozen modern political histories of Scotland; and an episode of ‘In Our Time’ from 2009.
But equally if you’re not a specialist in church history or theology, I’m not sure that it’s necessary to probe the murky depths of every minor theological point ever, and once you’ve started where does it end?
Anyway this entirely uninformed rant brought to you by my encounter with a sixteenth century bishop who was supposedly writing a completely orthodox book to re-evangelise his flock and tempt them away from Protestantism, but who described the baptismal rite in a way that sounds decidedly sketchy, if not heretical. And rather than being able to engage with the text properly and get what I needed from it, I was instead left sitting there like:
And frankly I didn’t have the time to go down the rabbit hole that would inevitably open up if I tried to find out
#This is a problem which is magnified in Britain I think as we also have to deal with the Hangover from Protestantism#As seen even in some folk who were raised Catholic but still imbibed certain ideas about the Middle Ages from culturally Protestant schools#And it isn't helped when we're hit with all these popular history tv documentaries#If I have to see one more person whose speciality is writing sensational paperbacks about Henry VIII's court#Being asked to explain for the British public What The Pope Thought I shall scream#Which is not even getting into some of England's super special common law get out clauses#Though having recently listened to some stuff in French I'm beginning to think misconceptions are not limited to Great Britain#Anyway I did take some realy interesting classes at uni on things like marriage and religious orders and so on#But it was definitely patchy and I definitely do not have a good handle on how it all basically hung together#As evidenced by the fact that I've probably made a tonne of mistakes in this post#Books aren't entirely helpful though because you can't ask them questions and sometimes the author is just plain wrong#I mean I will take book recommendations but they are not entirely helpful; and we also haven't all read the same stuff#So one person's idea of what the basics of being baptised involved are going to radically differ from another's based on what they read#Which if you are primarily a political historian interested in the Hundred Years' War doesn't seem important eonugh to quibble over#But it would help if everyone was given some kind of similar introductory training and then they could probe further if needed/wanted#So that one historian's elementary mistake about baptism doesn't affect generations of specialists in the Hundred Years' War#Because they have enough basic knowledge to know that they can just discount that tiny irrelevant bit#This is why seminars are important folks you get to ASK QUESTIONS AND FIGURE OUT BITS YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND#And as I say there is a bit of a habit in this country of producing books about say religion in mediaeval England#And then you're expected to work out for yourself which bits you can extrapolate and assume were true outwith England#Or France or Scotland or wherever it may be though the English and the French are particularly bad for assuming#that whatever was true for them was obviously true for everyone else so why should they specify that they're only talking about France#Alright rant over#Beginning to come to the conclusion that nobody knows how Christianity works but would like certain historians to stop pretending they do#Edit: I sort of made up the examples of the historical people who gave me my religious education above#But I'm now enamoured with the idea of who actually did give me my weird ideas about mediaeval Catholicism#Who were my historical godparents so to speak#Do I have an idea of mediaeval religion that was jointly shaped by some professor from the 1970s and a 6th century saint?#Does Cardinal Campeggio know he's responsible for some much later human being's catechism?#Fake examples again but I'm going to be thinking about that today

This game drives me so fucking INSANE. atom = adam ofc and just. Equating opening to the expanse to THAT choice.
#Shitpost#also the next line is 'we ask the mitochondria within you' which people meme but it makes ME insane#'A single atoms revolt will damage no more than a single cell' (adam)#'The damage cell will quickly be healed by the other cells'#'In order to sever this chain there is a decision yet to be made'#'We shall show you the guideposts for that decision'#like AHHHHH I AM SO FUCKING INSANEEEE#nihilism as a very funky thing that drew in these representatives of humanity as a whole is SO insane#neutrality as a response to nihilism as in trying to find an answer to this question that isnt perfect death#to instead turn on the creator Himself. Not to bring humanity out of reach#But instead to attain a temporary victory. To live at any cost to be free even if it is for but a moment.#nihilism is the more perfect answer. Wrenching humanity from His grip forever#but neutrality is against nihilism as law and chaos are against each other#it defies that and refuses it. Even while they witness the same problem#they accept different answers#smt is about problem solving to me. Anyways.#smtiv replay

man i hate that one teacher ruined the whole concept of math for me bc i love physics and string theory and chemistry and all that stuff but every time I'm watching a video about it i hear like. specific algebraic concepts and i immediately lose all interest
#the word polynomial makes me want to throw things at the wall#it's always algebra too the more abstract the math the more mad i get#i like geometry at least i can make sense of shapes even when they're imaginary shapes#math is such an important part of science though and sometimes i can't engage with my spins because of it and it's upsetting#it just frustrates me bc of that one teacher making it as frustrating as possible for me only out of the whole class#like she targeted me specifically bc i was adhd and dyscalculic too she'd like. shame me in front of the class for it#you know? i kinda hate having gone to what's considered to be 'nice schools' where the faculty and management is nice enough#bc then when i have a legitimate complaint about how i was treated by a teacher they tell me 'oh this place doesn't have problems like that'#like when a teacher is actively refusing to give me a tutor WHEN IT'S REQUIRED BY ADA LAW FOR HER TO GIVE ME ONE IF I ASK

hi! do u ship to eu?
I currently everywhere except the UK (but UK can order through Etsy, or use a mail forwarding service).
Next year however, I will no longer accept international orders & everyone from outside of the US will need to use a mail forwarding service to order (I've looked into it and in almost all cases they are cheaper and faster than the international shipping I can offer directly!)
#international orders are only about 3% of my sales but about 80% of my problems :[#and all the laws are changing to be so strict like with packaging requirements or taxes etc#i can't register everywhere to do all that properly when I'm such a small business and get so few international orders regardless#i hope you can all understand why I'll be making this change#and the mail forwarding services really are much faster and cheaper or about the same cost as paying for intl shipping in my shop#they can negotiate much better deals with USPS or whatever than i have access to#ask#witch vamp#anon#international#international orders

#I keep having these low-key frustrating conversations with people I respect about anti-trans laws#one of my favorite profs was asking me the other day what I want to do after my degree#and I mentioned that I might leave geology bc while I like my work and think it's useful#there are problems in the world that are way more pressing than [natural hazard] in [location] and matter more to me#also that it's kind of a bummer/difficult to plan for a long term future here#when I don't know what laws will look like here in just a few years from now...#I live in a pretty safe state but I'm worried about national laws#like to be clear I think a 'need to flee the country immediately' kind of situation is a long long long way from where we are now#but not so unlikely that I can readily put down the daymares about it#anyway I say this to the prof#and he says 'where will you go??'#and like I get what he meant and it's not a bad question exactly but that phrasing sure makes things sound globally hopeless#like 'if you need to leave where would you prefer to go?' would have been so much better...#and then today my advisor asked how my 2024 is going so far and I said that as of this morning#280 state level anti-trans bills had been filed and 38 national ones#and her response was 'why haven't I seen it in the news?'#how tf am I supposed to respond to that?? do I look like the fucking new york times to you????#first I was like 'there are people covering it like I could send links'#and she was like 'I'm not talking about whether I go looking for something... I meant why haven't I seen it In The News'#I ended up saying something about how similar bills are filed in many states so it would get repetitive on npr etc.#and how often do state level bills make it to the national news anyways?#and then I said that even here there had been one filed though I don't expect it will be passed#and she was like 'oh yeah I saw that one in the news'#and I'm like '?????????' so you DO see it in the news hmmmm?#and while I agree with the point that more national coverage would be good part of me still wonders#would she even notice if more of those headlines passed through her universe?#anyway to be clear these are both good people that I like a lot#something is just a little off and maybe it's that they don't quite get it#or that my sleep schedule went to hell in a handbasket so things bug me that normally wouldn't#or both

#had to serve jury duty for the first time and people are dramatic but it’s not that bad! like if it’s not a hardship it’s whatever#but the case involved a convicted felon allegedly having possession of a gun and ammo which is illegal in my state#and a handful of men (only ever men huh) got tossed for saying they believe so strongly in 2A that this particular law is not one they feel#they can abide by. because despite the prior felony they believe people should still have a right to a gun#and so the lawyers and judge would always ask everyone else on the panel if they will abide by/make judgements based on laws as is#even if they don’t believe in the law#and guyssss if ending Roe taught me anything it’s that laws can fucking change and quite possibly for the great bad!#I didn’t bring this up because I knew I was getting booted for ACAB vibes but it helped me understand that one day you might actually have#to break a law to save a life. laws can be fucking bad and morally you have to do what you have to do#idk maybe this is a dumb epiphany and I’m late but I’ve thought about it a lot#also. a few years ago I would’ve hated these 2A dudes but after ~the world I don’t anymore#I mean we have a real fucking problem with guns no shit and the laws don’t even try to regulate#but aye you might need to protect yourself from the protectors one day and maybe we can change the culture of guns#instead of whatever I used to think#anyways I have a bit of a moral dilemma ab not actively trying to be picked but having to lie about trusting cops wasn’t gonna be it for me

gentle reminder that if a story is presented in a way that expects an immediate emotional response, it's okay to ask (and you probably should be asking) for more information.
that emotional response is more than likely hiding some nuance that the people telling the story don't want you to consider.
#this post brought to you by my brother in law telling me about the fetus container#a shipping container was found with 16k aborted fetuses in varying states of decomp and disassembly#immediate emotional response: wtf#then you dig into the story a bit deeper...#this container was found in 1982#it was a refrigerated container that had been disconnected and repossessed when the person who had it had financial problems#suddenly i have new assumptions and questions#assumption: a doctor had been performing abortions for people who couldn't access them#probably over many many years#and he was using the refrigerated container to safely store the remains#which considering the time was probably a last resort option for all involved#which raises the question: why is this being resurrected now?#could it have something to do with the conservative desire to paint abortion as something out of a horror film?#anyways...#fact check your anecdotes ppl#and when asked 'are you looking that up cos you don't believe me?'#ymmv but say 'no just looking for more info'

No, that isn’t factual and is based on a really pessimistic reading of the rest of humanity. Look, I know things are bad in the world and everyone is a bit jaded after the past few years.
And I understand how, for someone who is already disgusted by something like abortion or gender nonconformity or being trans or gay or whatever else is Them in their Us versus Them culture war- people for whom those are not things which impact people they know, but something alien so they picture the Chick Tract version of why would a person xyz- it makes a sort of sense to figure “well anyone who would otherwise perform abortion care would let a pregnant person bleed out to make a political point” because liberals are already conveniently demonized by the talking heads on TV (or, lets be honest, YT). Like, I know a lot of folks who have a conservative political compass but consider themselves compassionate people can see how barring a two-spirit author from giving a talk or denying care to someone with an ectopic pregnancy which could never be viable will think (have thought) "surely there will be an exception or consideration in those cases! surely that isn't what they meant- they are just trying to protect kids!"
I’m sorry to put this so bluntly but the politicians and commentators alike have lied to you. These were foreseeable consequences to the language of the respective bills as written.
If the plain text of a piece of legislation says “no drag shows where there are kids” but doesn’t define “drag” then people who don’t want to be pulled into the middle of crossfire, who are moderate mild-mannered folk who read the Terms of Service before they click okay, will understand that, as written, it could mean a burlesque show with numbers that could headline in Vegas or it could mean a fashionable author who happens to not conform to cis expectations having a little book signing. It is so broadly written and there are so many people who are eager to get test cases to push the most extreme reading- the folks who really do think that the solution to Us versus Them is to hone society to exclude Them- that folks will self-censor and self-police.
There doesn’t need to be a cop helping you into the stirrups for your GYN to listen to the hospital’s legal department that says, due to the way the law is written, that they can’t do anything until your life is in danger. The legislation wasn’t written by doctors, it was written by politicians who went to law school in the 60s or 70s, and, to be blunt, the people behind these bills don’t actually care about the cruelty inflicted on the cases you have empathy for. It is, at best, acceptable collateral damage. Some of them are on the very conservative end of things where they will either dog whistle or straight out say they are fine with the cruelties hitting people well beyond who they spread fear about to get support and donations on the basis of that bill or the platform it’s part of.
They are already happy enough to hide behind “think of the children!” when they mean “think of my super PAC funds!” or, for the talking heads, “think of my advertising revenue!”, why would the foreseeable consequences for other people bother them? Especially if it’s just liberals, just gender freaks, just loose women, you know… Them. Not Us.
Individuals obeying these deliberately vague and far-sweeping laws aren’t the ones to side-eye if you have an issue with treating fellow travelers like trash to make a political point. Just this week the Supreme Court ruling about the wedding website “vendor” who wanted to be free to refuse service to couples whose marriages she thinks shouldn’t happen? Based on a hypothetical- hasn’t made any wedding websites and nobody asked for one either. It was a case brought specifically to establish precedent, not in response to a specific incident where her freedom of speech and someone else’s freedom from discrimination actually came into conflict. So folks who read a law with broad language and err on the side of caution aren’t all going to be mustache twirling Them (whether you infer they are a degenerate liberal willing to let someone suffer to make a point or a callous conservative willing to let someone suffer to make a point); most of them are just folks who just want to do their job and go home to dinner, so whether they think the law is bad or fine or doesn’t go far enough, they’re obeying it for the same reason people obey stop signs or say “unalive” on tiktok.
Anyhow! Have a 4th!
I know y'all should all know by now, but here is a current example of how drag bans actually ban trans people from existing in public spaces
This was the email that was sent to Adria Jawort, a two spirit author scheduled to speak at a Montana library, on the first day of pride month.
