dr stone being one of my fav animes ive seen recently is pretty crazy given how turned off i was by senku's character design + the weed man memes + i thought based on the visuals it was going to be some type of seinen/shounen overloaded w tropes im not a fan of...and it kinda is LMFAO the way women are drawn compared to men terrifies me
but it completely blew me out of the water wrt expectations on the story. the science niche it fills is genuinely so enjoyable. the scene where they remade the "edison" lightbulb is so unforgettable. and i loved the reinventing glasses arc
ofc i am also watching this w a critical lens and do notice a lot of questionable tropes/ideological commentary that make me go ?!?!?!?!?. but dr stone being an anime ive rewatched was not something i was expecting

I'm not explaining why re-imagining characters as POC is not the same as white-washing, here of all places should fucking understand.
#personal#delete later#no patrick. “black washing” is not as harmful as white washing.#come on guys get it together#seeing people in my reblogs talk about “reverse racism” and double standards is genuinely hypocrisy#say it with me: white washing is intrinsically tied to a historical and systematic erasure of poc figures literature and history.#it is an inherently destructive act that deplatforms underrepresented faces and voices#in favor of a light-skinned aesthetic hegemony#redesigning characters as poc is an act of dismantling symbols of whiteness in fiction in favor of diversification and reclamation#(note that i am talking about individual acts by individual artists as was the topic of this discourse. not on an industry-scale)#redesigning characters as poc is not tied to hundreds of years of systemic racism and abuse and power dynamics. that is a fact.#you are not replacing an underrepresented person with an oft-represented person. it is the opposite#if you feel threatened or upset or uncomfortable about this then sorry but you are not aware of how much more worse it is for poc#if representation is unequal then these acts cannot be equivalent. you can't point to an imbalanced scale and say they weigh the same#if you recognize that bipoc people are minorities then you should recognize that these two things are not the same#while i agree that “black washing” can lead to color-blind casting and writing the behavior here is on an individual level#a black artist drawing their favorite anime character as black because they feel a shared solidarity is not a threat to you#i mean. most anime characters are east asian and i as an east asian person certainly don't feel threatened or erased. neither should you.#there's much to be said about the politics of blackwashing (i don't even know if that's the right word for it)#but point standing. whitewashing is an inherently more destructive act. both through its history of maintaining power dynamics#and the simple fact that it's taking away from groups of people who have less to begin with#if you feel upset or uncomfortable about a fictional white character being redesigned as poc by an artist on twitter#i sincerely hope you're able to explore these feelings and find avenues to empathizing with poc who have had their figures#(both real and fictional) erased; buried; and replaced by white figures for hundreds of years#i sincerely hope you can understand the difference in motivations and connotations behind whitewashing and blackwashing#classic bixels “i'm not talking about this chat. i'm not” (puts my media studies major to use in the tags and talks the fuck outta it)

every time i (a mixed race girl) come across a post that’s basically saying that Marinette, a mixed race girl, isn’t Chinese enough, my urge to set hellfire on this world increases by 100000000%.

It's again that time of the week where I have to go and report the spam and/or porn bots from the tags I follow because every time I see one of their posts on my dashboard I die inside a little bit

Sometimes I wish I could drive home just how little of Chinese fandom culture actually makes it onto Tumblr at all, much less circulates in western Tumblr circles, and I've finally got a solid example.
On this list I reblogged a not long ago, Poyun, which I started reading on Bilibili the other day, has the 93rd most popular ship on all of Lofter, with over 15,000 posts. By comparison, the 93rd most popular ship of that same year (2020) on Tumblr was from Haikyuu, and from 2021 the 93rd most popular was from Miraculous Lady Bug - which is to say, even if you're not into, it's a fandom you've almost certainly heard of if you move in fandom circles at all. Like, those are two fandoms with known, huge followings. Likewise, Yan Xie/Jiang Ting is a big deal ship on Lofter.
I started reading the manhua a few days ago, so I know I'm gonna be posting some of the manhua art to @cnovelartreblogs so I was like, I should check the main tags and queue the art (even if it means I might be exposed to spoilers), and then I won't accidentally duplicate other people's art posting efforts or anything.
Now, granted, I've seen some evidence that tag search is more broken than usual the last few days, but even so...
#po yun: there are maybe 30 posts in "most popular"
#破云: there are maybe 20 posts in "most popular," and they're basically all the same (as in, people tagged both)
#poyun: about the same number, and the only 3 pieces of fanart I can find on the whole platform (@drawulan you don't know me but you are a BLESSING to C-Novel fandoms with small followings on Tumblr. A BLESSING, YOU HEAR? I LOVE YOUR ART.)
Y'all, we have no idea how little we actually know and see about what's popular in Chinese fandom.

okay i have a lot of unincubated thoughts on kim’s relationship to asian-ness as filtered through my own experiences as a chinese diaspora person navigating both my home country in se asia and also canada for a period of time
also i need more lore on seol, i must flesh out the context of kim’s seolite heritage in proximity to seol’s place within the wider geopolitics and culture
if there are gaps in the lore, i will certainly fill them in myself

also to be clear like… i wasn’t making a grand statement i was making an offhand comment in the tags of a post. i’ve wanted to actually talk about the depiction of tucker’s tattoos in the fandom for a while but i’ve found it difficult to word it in a way that wouldn’t get people to react like anon did. and so when i saw a post of someone already expressing basically what i was trying to say, though in a much more general sense, i figured i’d just reblog it with a simple comment and trust that my followers would know me well enough to trust that my full opinion was much more nuanced than could be expressed in a kind of jokey two sentence tag on someone else’s post.
because like. there’s a long history of tattoos, especially face tattoos, being associated with criminality. and while i don’t think a single artist’s intention with drawing tucker with tattoos is to call forth that association it is still soemthing to be cognizant of. and when i talk about “vague tribal-esque tattoos” i’m talking about designs that give tucker these meaningless random squiggles that call to mind an “exotic” feel that many non-polynesians, especially white people, associate with being “tribal” tattoos. in reality, of course, actual tribal tattoos have very specific cultural meanings that aren’t just the cool looking symbols that are like. this is the first result of “tribal tattoo” on google images:
Tumblr media
if you want to tell me you have not seen many tucker designs with basically the same design philosophy as these have then i will tell you that you are lying.
and if you have a question of like, how do i not design tattoos that fall into this trap, then i would say to like, give meaning and intention to the design? whether or not you think the sword automatically gave him the tattoos or if they were given to him by the sangheili, they would realistically be of GREAT religious significance. if you want inspiration i shared an example of the sangheili script but i would look at designs of the stylings and architecture and symbols used by the sangheili, the covenant, maybe even the forerunners. you can look to the design of the sword and extrapolate around that, using the shape to create more designs and symbols that follow the same design philosophy of it but like. they should have meaning to them. there should be a reason that these designs were the ones that were chosen to be put on tuckers body.
not only will doing this prevent you from falling into “vague cool looking tribal symbols” you’ll also get a design that’s much more unique, much more interesting, and much more meaningful.

And what if I redesigned the monk class according to actual wuxia themes and tropes, what then. I simply think monks are cool and can absolutely be redeemed as a class once you take the Orientalism out of it and be a little more thoughtful about what fantasy martial arts are actually like in East Asian stories.

Don’t we literally boil lobsters and crabs. Isn’t that the exact same concept? It’s not inherently more cruel because it’s China. I don’t know how to say this without being a smug ass but please try and reflect on why you might be more angry about this than if Americans were doing the same thing
Who's we???
I don't eat lobster or crab. I never have. When the fuck have I ever said omg I love boiling lobsters alive.
I regularly eat raw mice and rabbits that I caught with my bare hands.
I live in the woods swallowing birds.

i follow pjo tags that im usually fine seeing on my dash and i keep seeing people posting about some Discourse thats popped up again since the comic con card photo things came out about leah and like. i guess i curated my dash well because im seeing literally none of that
#crunchyposts#pjo#pjotv#im not tagging this with a//abeth i dont want it in my tag for her#thank god i dont follow racists and am not on reddit#the amount of people on reddit i saw who were so disappointed in them not looking like the characters#i honeslty dont really understand the gripes with them not looking like the book descriptions like any issues i had went out thewindow when#i saw actual people attached to them#i like that ann/beths black!!!!! i think it adds a lot to her character!!!!!#i dont give a shit about percys hair color!!!!!!!!!!! ive seen walker act i trust him!!!!!!!#i really dont get why people are so disappointed with it????? i saw one person say bc they had an idea of what they looked like for years#but i mean. more representation for marginalized groups#ive thought a lot about lack of rep as a queer south east asian person i was just happy there was more of it for other marginalized people#i wouldve preferred an animated show but honestly i prefer this now bc i never wouldve gotten why annabeth works better if shes black#if it was animated and they changed the race of any of them the discourse (cough and racism cough) would be 10x worse itd be awful#but like an all white cast???? i wouldnt like that either#and you KNOW the shitstorm online if they changed any major character even if it wasnt one of the main 3#anyways sorry long tags again i thought a lot about this get off my blog if you complain about any of the actors appearances i dont think w#should dictate what a childs appearance should be just for a tv show#edit actually extra thing here i think it would be kinda cool if rachel was still white so we could subvert that trope of poc love interest#being stepping stones before the main character inevitably ends up with the white main love interest#if they made it like extra clear that he was going to choose annab/th though to shut down any racism that might happen
