dr stone being one of my fav animes ive seen recently is pretty crazy given how turned off i was by senku's character design + the weed man memes + i thought based on the visuals it was going to be some type of seinen/shounen overloaded w tropes im not a fan of...and it kinda is LMFAO the way women are drawn compared to men terrifies me
but it completely blew me out of the water wrt expectations on the story. the science niche it fills is genuinely so enjoyable. the scene where they remade the "edison" lightbulb is so unforgettable. and i loved the reinventing glasses arc
ofc i am also watching this w a critical lens and do notice a lot of questionable tropes/ideological commentary that make me go ?!?!?!?!?. but dr stone being an anime ive rewatched was not something i was expecting
#beans of consciousness#theres been quite a few commentaries about how dr stone is kinda ayn randist which is less than great.#mfw nearly stopped watching bc ryusei brought back money#and also the anime trope where the only people ever are japanese and american and/or european. and maybe a chinese or indian person.#the japan centric storyline is fine since the author is japanese of course but when things go global and theres clearly a western bias#its a bit eye rolling#its indicative of the avg japanese view of the world#same way genshins world reflects avg mainland chinese perceptions of the world and all the biases that come with it#world apocalypse where only westerners and east asians exist is truly a tired trope#and i am saying this as an east asian#think of all the possibilities if we could expand properly

I'm not explaining why re-imagining characters as POC is not the same as white-washing, here of all places should fucking understand.
#personal#delete later#no patrick. “black washing” is not as harmful as white washing.#come on guys get it together#seeing people in my reblogs talk about “reverse racism” and double standards is genuinely hypocrisy#say it with me: white washing is intrinsically tied to a historical and systematic erasure of poc figures literature and history.#it is an inherently destructive act that deplatforms underrepresented faces and voices#in favor of a light-skinned aesthetic hegemony#redesigning characters as poc is an act of dismantling symbols of whiteness in fiction in favor of diversification and reclamation#(note that i am talking about individual acts by individual artists as was the topic of this discourse. not on an industry-scale)#redesigning characters as poc is not tied to hundreds of years of systemic racism and abuse and power dynamics. that is a fact.#you are not replacing an underrepresented person with an oft-represented person. it is the opposite#if you feel threatened or upset or uncomfortable about this then sorry but you are not aware of how much more worse it is for poc#if representation is unequal then these acts cannot be equivalent. you can't point to an imbalanced scale and say they weigh the same#if you recognize that bipoc people are minorities then you should recognize that these two things are not the same#while i agree that “black washing” can lead to color-blind casting and writing the behavior here is on an individual level#a black artist drawing their favorite anime character as black because they feel a shared solidarity is not a threat to you#i mean. most anime characters are east asian and i as an east asian person certainly don't feel threatened or erased. neither should you.#there's much to be said about the politics of blackwashing (i don't even know if that's the right word for it)#but point standing. whitewashing is an inherently more destructive act. both through its history of maintaining power dynamics#and the simple fact that it's taking away from groups of people who have less to begin with#if you feel upset or uncomfortable about a fictional white character being redesigned as poc by an artist on twitter#i sincerely hope you're able to explore these feelings and find avenues to empathizing with poc who have had their figures#(both real and fictional) erased; buried; and replaced by white figures for hundreds of years#i sincerely hope you can understand the difference in motivations and connotations behind whitewashing and blackwashing#classic bixels “i'm not talking about this chat. i'm not” (puts my media studies major to use in the tags and talks the fuck outta it)

Enstars sure is an experience. Did I miss anything?
#are you guys all okay? i definitely am not okay#this is not the type of media that i usually go for yet it is EXACTLY the type of media that i would like#so many gaps so many stories WAY TOO MUCH READING I DONT HAVE THE TIME#i know i missed a lot because ive only watched the anime and read the main music story up to ch 4 of the second part#and i have read some events stories that were free#and maybe one or two outside from translations#but like thats it#this is like reading orv and getting hit with its deep metas on human life and the importance of stories#but instead im being clobbered by the most deranged storylines known to man (and again. i read ORV and am a bsd fan)#this isnt fantasy but there is nothing realistic about enstars and i unfortunately am attached#every day i spiral into east asian media that gives me an aneurysm#bsd -> orv -> link click -> enstars....i wanna say they keep getting more unhinged but theyre all unhinged in different ways#anyway please help me....#enstars#ensemble stars#fandom spamdom#stuff i say#i will admit i am mostly into the game for the stories#a consistent gamer i am not#but to unlock the stories ill push back the animes i have to catch up on etc etc#again. please help me....#edit: updated to remove queerbaiting because apparently i dont know whats going on

#satsuhart#temehika#octo2#temenos height got confirmed as 178cm and we know hikari is <170cm and im so 🤯🤯🤯#somehow im not too surprised about teme height but when i compare it to how short hikari is supposed to be im like omg....god.....#and then when you put them side by side its like GOD......... ...#i know the tallest hikari could be is 169cm but i personally hced 166 and now thats a 12cm height diff (exploding)#MAYBE ITS A DESIGN THING but i know therion was also quite a bit shorter than the rest of octo1 guys#but his design (poncho) makes him look so. round. small. but i did NOT think hikari would be shorter#team asano accurately saying east asian men are short#dont @ me i am east asian

i wish there were more mainstream southeast asian-american stories
#i feel like a lot of the asian-american narratives i see are centered around east asians which isn't a bad thing;#i'm happy they get to tell their stories. but their stories aren't mine and it doesn't feel right to say they are.#yeah i'm mixed asian but the culture i grew up in#was predominantly filipino and so i associate myself with that aspect of my ethnicity more. being japanese is weird to me#straying away from the whole point of this post but being filipino (american) in general is so weird to me#like i'm asian but because of the spanish influence on my culture i'm not asian 'enough' compared to my other asian peers#one time in first grade i did a project on the philippines and wrote: 'the philippines is in asia.' to which my teacher told me it wasn't#which spurred my first identity crisis: if i'm not asian‚ then what am i?#🐰

i think i might actually start mauling people. i think i should be allowed to hunt toshiro haters for sport.
#dungeon meshi#the fact that this is written in that goddamn eggman piss copypasta also adds. an interesting layer. to this post#need to put toshiro on a shelf above all these dunmeshi fans bc clearly they can't handle it#'bitch made weaboo shit' about a japanese man is. a telling choice.#this is not even the entire post there's at least three paragraphs of this nonsense#and it's all written in this excessively aggressive internetspeak type lingo#every single toshiro hater that likes the attached post owes me 300 dollars effective immediately#going to stop going through the dungeon meshi tag i think. going to let my following list vet the tag for me#this post reeks of like. someone who has never tried to interact with east asian culture outside of anime and other pop media#anyways. im going to go buy soju and calm down. i am an adult with responsibilities and a 9 to 5. the world has every kind of person#going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say they're a very young person enjoying fandom. ok. hope they learn. bc im not teaching#(checks bio) oh they're an adult. hm.

It's again that time of the week where I have to go and report the spam and/or porn bots from the tags I follow because every time I see one of their posts on my dashboard I die inside a little bit
#wren text tag#aro/ace tag and the spam bot war here I am#also in the StS tag like bruh it's not even that active why do I see 1 spam bot in the first page already#how the fuck did you find this tag. It hasn't been trending in years.#not gonna say the fandom it's dead but like#there are 6 people actively posting here on tumblr (<- forgotten hellsite)#and 1 of them is like a general news blog abt the serie#(and one of them is me lol)#I love joining fandom 30 years after they first aired so in the end their popolarity is already gone and I'm left here with idk#3 other people that have made the same bad decision as me lol#like virtually I wouldn't mind to idk post my art also on other websites like uhhh Twitter or uhhh Instagram#(looks at the list of websites that don't use AI) OH yeah definitely not them#The StS fandom on twitter be thriving btw. I think it's because its platform is used by a lot of Asian fan... unlike tumblr#and the serie is still a lot more popular in the East#I'd give Twitter a chance but I don't like the platform. Everytime I log in I see some drama or AI art getting 40k likes and I close the ap#also fandom discourse like hhhhhh

Sometimes I wish I could drive home just how little of Chinese fandom culture actually makes it onto Tumblr at all, much less circulates in western Tumblr circles, and I've finally got a solid example.
On this list I reblogged a not long ago, Poyun, which I started reading on Bilibili the other day, has the 93rd most popular ship on all of Lofter, with over 15,000 posts. By comparison, the 93rd most popular ship of that same year (2020) on Tumblr was from Haikyuu, and from 2021 the 93rd most popular was from Miraculous Lady Bug - which is to say, even if you're not into, it's a fandom you've almost certainly heard of if you move in fandom circles at all. Like, those are two fandoms with known, huge followings. Likewise, Yan Xie/Jiang Ting is a big deal ship on Lofter.
I started reading the manhua a few days ago, so I know I'm gonna be posting some of the manhua art to @cnovelartreblogs so I was like, I should check the main tags and queue the art (even if it means I might be exposed to spoilers), and then I won't accidentally duplicate other people's art posting efforts or anything.
Now, granted, I've seen some evidence that tag search is more broken than usual the last few days, but even so...
#po yun: there are maybe 30 posts in "most popular"
#破云: there are maybe 20 posts in "most popular," and they're basically all the same (as in, people tagged both)
#poyun: about the same number, and the only 3 pieces of fanart I can find on the whole platform (@drawulan you don't know me but you are a BLESSING to C-Novel fandoms with small followings on Tumblr. A BLESSING, YOU HEAR? I LOVE YOUR ART.)
Y'all, we have no idea how little we actually know and see about what's popular in Chinese fandom.
#unforth rambles#This is one of the hidden costs of Western fandom being...the way Western fandom is.#idk where i'm really going with this#and i will say some of what's different i wouldn't see change#like my experience with the way top/bottom stuff gets treated in east asian fandoms#while my personal experience is mostly with yaoi fandoms#regardless if chinese fandoms are anything like japanese fandoms in that regard#i'd do basically anything to NOT see that infiltrate western fandom#but we get some of that anyway#i saw a post in the mdzs tag LITERALLY TODAY complaining that people in the bottomji bang#weren't tagging their bottomji and that the poster (oh horrors)#was finding out when they opened the fic and read the a/n#and how DARE people not tag it#so yeah it's not like i can escape stupid toxic top/bottom stuff#which to be clear isn't about people having a preference but is about how people talk about those preferences#but anyway i want all the good parts and not the parts i don't like lmao#like all the art and meta#but we can't have nice things because white people#standard disclaimer i am also white people

okay i have a lot of unincubated thoughts on kim’s relationship to asian-ness as filtered through my own experiences as a chinese diaspora person navigating both my home country in se asia and also canada for a period of time
also i need more lore on seol, i must flesh out the context of kim’s seolite heritage in proximity to seol’s place within the wider geopolitics and culture
if there are gaps in the lore, i will certainly fill them in myself
#disco elysium#zee.txt#i have to say that the game's depiction of seol as a stand in for east asia is still very much limited#by the fact it was written by predominantly white eastern europeans from what i know of#i could be wrong and feel free to correct me if i am#even seol looking very similar to seoul#and kim's name being an amalgamation of both korean and japanese#leans too much into the common orientalist impulse of white people to treat east asian cultures as interchangeable#especially when we have such complicated political histories#nevertheless i still heavily appreciate kim being an east-asian coded character in the game#and that the anti-asian racism that he frequently encounters is treated very seriously in the game#which i can't say the same for many non-asian media out there

also to be clear like… i wasn’t making a grand statement i was making an offhand comment in the tags of a post. i’ve wanted to actually talk about the depiction of tucker’s tattoos in the fandom for a while but i’ve found it difficult to word it in a way that wouldn’t get people to react like anon did. and so when i saw a post of someone already expressing basically what i was trying to say, though in a much more general sense, i figured i’d just reblog it with a simple comment and trust that my followers would know me well enough to trust that my full opinion was much more nuanced than could be expressed in a kind of jokey two sentence tag on someone else’s post.
because like. there’s a long history of tattoos, especially face tattoos, being associated with criminality. and while i don’t think a single artist’s intention with drawing tucker with tattoos is to call forth that association it is still soemthing to be cognizant of. and when i talk about “vague tribal-esque tattoos” i’m talking about designs that give tucker these meaningless random squiggles that call to mind an “exotic” feel that many non-polynesians, especially white people, associate with being “tribal” tattoos. in reality, of course, actual tribal tattoos have very specific cultural meanings that aren’t just the cool looking symbols that are like. this is the first result of “tribal tattoo” on google images:
if you want to tell me you have not seen many tucker designs with basically the same design philosophy as these have then i will tell you that you are lying.
and if you have a question of like, how do i not design tattoos that fall into this trap, then i would say to like, give meaning and intention to the design? whether or not you think the sword automatically gave him the tattoos or if they were given to him by the sangheili, they would realistically be of GREAT religious significance. if you want inspiration i shared an example of the sangheili script but i would look at designs of the stylings and architecture and symbols used by the sangheili, the covenant, maybe even the forerunners. you can look to the design of the sword and extrapolate around that, using the shape to create more designs and symbols that follow the same design philosophy of it but like. they should have meaning to them. there should be a reason that these designs were the ones that were chosen to be put on tuckers body.
not only will doing this prevent you from falling into “vague cool looking tribal symbols” you’ll also get a design that’s much more unique, much more interesting, and much more meaningful.
#also i’m not saying that every design of tuckers tattoos have this problem. if that’s how you want to interpret me then you’re addicted to#bad faith readings and i would recommend taking a step back from online discourse#this isn’t rebloggable because i still don’t really want this to be like. my ‘take’#and like straight up i will say that i have way more knowledge when it comes to anti black and#(south)east asian racism than i do about anti indigenous and polynesian racism#and if i were to say something i’d want to do way more research than i currently have#to be clear i’m not like. ignorant. i am confident in this statement and highly doubt it would change drastically with further research#but there’s a difference between being confident enough in a statement to express it and confident enough to have it spread outside of your#control. ykwim?

And what if I redesigned the monk class according to actual wuxia themes and tropes, what then. I simply think monks are cool and can absolutely be redeemed as a class once you take the Orientalism out of it and be a little more thoughtful about what fantasy martial arts are actually like in East Asian stories.
#the valley is posting#i say i'm not going to do this because i have no experience with designing game mechanics and yet...#monks are my favourite d&d class and i want it to be the best it can be#which involves taking out the orientalism and maybe even readjusting the structure so that it's more authentic to wuxia ideas#instead of just being a surface level imitation of martial arts aesthetics#look i don't claim to be a complete expert in wuxia but there's so much depth to martial arts and philosophy#which the monk class as it currently is barely skims the surface level aesthetics of; but it could be so much more#ah fuck; i'm gonna have to do it now; aren't i#obligatory disclaimer that i am in fact chinese and that i don't speak for all east asian people when it comes to d&d monks

Don’t we literally boil lobsters and crabs. Isn’t that the exact same concept? It’s not inherently more cruel because it’s China. I don’t know how to say this without being a smug ass but please try and reflect on why you might be more angry about this than if Americans were doing the same thing
Who's we???
I don't eat lobster or crab. I never have. When the fuck have I ever said omg I love boiling lobsters alive.
I regularly eat raw mice and rabbits that I caught with my bare hands.
I live in the woods swallowing birds.
#like bitch are you joking i hate what people do to lobsters too#tf#by the way#the fucking OP even clarified that not all chinese people eat fish this way#its a rich person thing#and its not wrong to fucking criticize it#you jackass#this is not a racism thing this is an abuse against animals thing#am i not allowed to say fuck this particular practice#this is also a very east asian thing#with the obsession with raw food#boiling lobsters is fucked but at least americans have the general idea that maybe we should shove a pin or a knife in their head first#chinese values surrounding live food are different and theres no denying that#btw im fucking chinese you moron#even if i wasnt#id still condemn that shit and NOT because its chinese but because its fucking cruel#the same way i have condemned people who live boil anything#im also against fucking veal#is that racist too#think before you speak

i follow pjo tags that im usually fine seeing on my dash and i keep seeing people posting about some Discourse thats popped up again since the comic con card photo things came out about leah and like. i guess i curated my dash well because im seeing literally none of that
#crunchyposts#pjo#pjotv#im not tagging this with a//abeth i dont want it in my tag for her#thank god i dont follow racists and am not on reddit#the amount of people on reddit i saw who were so disappointed in them not looking like the characters#i honeslty dont really understand the gripes with them not looking like the book descriptions like any issues i had went out thewindow when#i saw actual people attached to them#i like that ann/beths black!!!!! i think it adds a lot to her character!!!!!#i dont give a shit about percys hair color!!!!!!!!!!! ive seen walker act i trust him!!!!!!!#i really dont get why people are so disappointed with it????? i saw one person say bc they had an idea of what they looked like for years#but i mean. more representation for marginalized groups#ive thought a lot about lack of rep as a queer south east asian person i was just happy there was more of it for other marginalized people#i wouldve preferred an animated show but honestly i prefer this now bc i never wouldve gotten why annabeth works better if shes black#if it was animated and they changed the race of any of them the discourse (cough and racism cough) would be 10x worse itd be awful#but like an all white cast???? i wouldnt like that either#and you KNOW the shitstorm online if they changed any major character even if it wasnt one of the main 3#anyways sorry long tags again i thought a lot about this get off my blog if you complain about any of the actors appearances i dont think w#should dictate what a childs appearance should be just for a tv show#edit actually extra thing here i think it would be kinda cool if rachel was still white so we could subvert that trope of poc love interest#being stepping stones before the main character inevitably ends up with the white main love interest#if they made it like extra clear that he was going to choose annab/th though to shut down any racism that might happen
