I'm gonna get cancelled for this but can we stop using white as an insult?
I get that white people are privileged as fuck, and that there are quite a few asshole white people. But. It's completely unnecessary to hate on someone JUST for being white. That's racist too.
If someone is a dick, you can point out that they're a dick without making it all about the fact that they're white? Like, unless they're actively racist or using the fact they're white to their advantage, can we not use that against them?
Racism can apply to everyone and racism is everywhere. Stop hating just because you're angry. Find a valid reason, and then we'll talk.
And by the way, this is coming from someone who is POC.
#racism#social issues#I'm gonna get hate for this#but fuck it#I'm sick of this#my best friends are insulted for being white#for literally no goddamn reason#like I get that there are a LOT of white assholes#and historically#white people have been the problem#BUT NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE IF WE KEEP HATING ON PEOPLE FOR NO FUCKING REASON#WE WANT EQUALITY#THAT DOESN'T MEAN WE GET TO ABUSE THEM#IT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT#JUST BE KIND TO EACH OTHER#FOR FUCK'S SAKE

"hey why are all the barrier garments like linen shirts or chemises or combinations going away?"
"oh we have more washable fabrics now! you don't need to worry about sweat reaching your outer clothing when you can just chuck it in the washing machine!"
"cool!"
[100 years later]
"so uh all of those new washable fabrics are leaching microplastics into our water, and the constant machine-washing wears garments out faster. they're also not really sturdy enough to be mended, so we keep having to throw them out and now the planet is covered in plastic fabric waste that will never break down. also it turns out that the new washable fabrics hold odor-causing bacteria VERY well. so could we get those barrier garments back please?"
"sorry babe linen now costs $100000/yard and since it's been so long without them, nobody knows how to adapt barrier garments to the current styles anyway"
"..."
"maybe try this new $50 undershirt made of Special Sweat-Wicking Plastic Fabric! :) :) :)"
#fashion#clothing#modern clothing is NOT practical. it may seem like it on the surface but we've moved so far from#actual practicality that if you take one step out of the system it breaks down#and we need to change the entire system for our own health and the good of the planet#I'm not saying everyone has to dress full historical stylistically! but. we need to bring back some TECHNOLOGIES our ancestors used

I'm getting so sick of major female characters in historical media being incredibly feisty, outspoken and public defenders of women's rights with little to no realistic repercussions. Yes it feels like pandering, yes it's unrealistic and takes me out of the story, yes the dialogue almost always rings false - but beyond all that I think it does such a disservice to the women who lived during those periods. I'm not embarrassed of the women in history who didn't use every chance they had to Stick It To The Man. I'm not ashamed of women who were resigned to or enjoyed their lot in life. They weren't letting the side down by not having and representing modern gender ideals. It says a lot about how you view average ordinary women if the idea of one of your main characters behaving like one makes them seem lame and uninteresting to you.
#feminism#media criticism#this doesn't apply to media with large casts of female characters where one or the other is uncommonly outspoken or ahead of her time#and it is dealt with realistically in the setting#im not saying women in the past couldnt be wild and headtsrong and revolutionary#i just think treating it as an essential whenever a female love interest gets added to a historical story about some man is wearing

One of my biggest nitpicks in fiction concerns the feeding of babies. Mothers dying during/shortly after childbirth or the baby being separated form the mother shortly after birth is pretty common in fiction. It is/was also common enough in real life, which is why I think a lot of writers/readers don't think too hard about this. however. Historically, the only reason the vast majority of babies survived being separated from their mother was because there was at least one other woman around to breastfeed them. Before modern formula, yes, people did use other substitutes, but they were rarely, if ever, nutritionally sufficient.
Newborns can't eat adult food. They can't really survive on animal milk. If your story takes place in a world before/without formula, a baby separated from its mother is going to either be nursed by someone else, or starve.
It doesn't have to be a huge plot point, but idk at least don't explicitly describe the situation as excluding the possibility of a wetnurse. "The father or the great grandmother or the neighbor man or the older sibling took and raised the baby completely alone in a cave for a year." Nope. That baby is dead I'm sorry. "The baby was kidnapped shortly after birth by a wizard and hidden away in a secret tower" um quick question was the wizard lactating? "The mother refused to see or touch her child after birth so the baby was left to the care of the ailing grandfather" the grandfather who made the necessary arrangements with women in the neighborhood, right? right? OR THAT GREAT OFFENDER "A newborn baby was left on the doorstep and they brought it in and took care of it no issues" What Are You Going to Feed That Baby. Hello?
Like. It's not impossible, but arrangements are going to have to be made. There are some logistics.
#idk what to tag this#worldbuilding#writing fiction#historical fiction#fantasy#a real-life example: my dad (a pediatrician) was once entrusted with the care of a baby who was born with a rare condition#this was in a place without great hospital/medical access and anyway they were going to fly the baby over#and he specifically asked them to bring the mother and baby#they show up with baby and...the baby's uncle#and he was like. y'all. do you think I asked for the mom to come just for fun??? We don't have formula here. what is the baby going to eat?
