Maomao's Dislike of Jinshi

So I've been watching Apothecary Diaries and I think people are missing out on the root cause of why Maomao doesn't like Jinshi's interactions with her. Maomao prefers working with honest people. It's why she never wanted to ascend into the ranks where court politics were a constant presence, because in court politics, you have to assume most people are lying to you on some level. That's why she likes Gyokuyou; Gyokuyou has a similar mentality about the importance of honesty in the people around her and she reciprocates that honesty with the select people she lets her walls down around. When Jinshi is flirting or being super sweet to someone, Maomao knows he's often not being sincere, so when he flirts or acts all sweet with her, she's not going to believe in the sincerity of it because it's dangerous for her if he's not being sincere.

In Maomao's world, a man who makes false promises will not have severe consequences for his actions, unlike the women who fall for them. Lies are a form of poison themselves as they deteriorate a person's life and relationships and if not caught, can lead someone to their death or a fate akin to death, but unlike physical toxins, Maomao can't fix any damage from that kind of societal poison. As someone who wants a lowkey and unremarkable life because it's more peaceful, Jinshi could damage her goals with his falsehoods if she falls for any of them.

And we see that when Jinshi is actually honest about himself and his feelings with her, she treats him better. When he gives her his hairpin, when he's hugging her and crying because of what happened with Ah-Duo, and when he's at the Verdigris House, drowning his sorrows over letting Maomao go from the Rear Palace, Maomao is kinder to him and doesn't look at him with the immediate disdain and suspicion she often throws his way. Maomao even states she prefers the Jinshi, who is more childlike and bratty, which is something we see Gaoshun constantly discourage when Jinshi has those moments where his mask breaks. But in those moments, he's being honest.

For the position of Maomao's love interest, Jinshi's already got one foot ahead of any other guy around Maomao, as he is willing to let Maomao have more freedom in her special interests and gives her things and access to areas that play into her interests, like her dad does, which is more than most men in her society would ever allow. The only reason he actively goes against her toying with poison is he knows exactly what she's going to do with the poisons. But his main hinderance to getting Maomao to like him back is the training of being two-faced that's been ingrained into him for his survival in court. If he was more honest with her, rather than hiding himself under the veneer of a pretty man who is sweet, gets along with everyone, and keeps his knowledge close to the chest, he'd do so much better in earning Maomao's respect and affection.

Dabi and Shigaraki Soulmate AU

Dabi

Your soulmate's name is tattooed on your skin

you live in a world where everyone over the age of 16 has a name written on their body somewhere, belonging to their soulmate

always an exciting day, and you were ecstatic as you searched your body in the mirror to find the words as they popped up

soon, along your collar bone, the name you were looking for finally appeared

Touya Todoroki

you had heard of the todoroki family, Endeavor was the number 2 hero after all, and you knew he had children. Possibly this soulmate was one of them?

however you found very little information on his children's identities, but you were hopeful that you would find something eventually

however, you do eventually find a few articles from a few years ago that tell you the worst news you could imagine - touya todoroki had died in a fire

it's been years now, you're in your early 20s, and have mostly accepted the fact that you'd never get your soulmate. you hoped to find someone one day you could still love like one, but most people aren't super into dating someone with a visible reminder that they don't belong together

over these years, you've made your way into being a small villain as well. no one serious, it happened mostly out of necessity, but you're a villain nonetheless

which helps lead you to an almost dorky looking little group of villains, rightfully called the league of villains to keep up with the dorky appearance

none of them really seem all that serious, kind of just seem like a bunch of people who have no where else to go, which you can't judge them for

toga, a cute younger girl who had quickly turned friendly with everyone there, was fascinated with the idea of soulmates. you didn't blame her, she had only recently gotten her name, but this led her to asking everyone if they had met theirs yet, what their names are, anything about them.

most people didn't want to talk about it, and the ones who did didn't have anything interesting to say. your leader insisted that soulmates were a waste of time, and the emo looking dude by him agreed

you felt bad that toga wasn't getting the conversations she was looking for though, and you decided you'd show her yours.

"Touya todoroki? isn't that that pro heros last name? Do you think your soulmate is a hero?"

you shook your head, smiling sadly as you told her "no, he's been dead for years. never even met the dude"

she frowned, feeling sad for you, and changing the convo made you miss the wide eyed stare directed at you from across the room

dabi, who had caught your name earlier but blew it off as a coincidence since you only said your first name, was actually stunned

when he was younger, he dreamed of a happy life with his soulmate, but after waking up from the coma he barely ever spared a thought about them

now, here you were, right in front of him and clearly sad about the idea that you didn't have a soulmate

and for the most part, he was so fucking grateful that you had no way of knowing who he was. hearing his name made the smallest part of him want to get to know you, but he has more important things to do. plus, realistically, he doesn't know you. he doesn't owe you anything

so he never said anything. never even gave a hint of who he was. you two did get close over time, always relying on one another for help and support

it wasn't until probably a year later when in a fight dabi gets badly wounded, he's unconscious, and you're panicking, where things begin to unravel

he clearly has a huge gash in his torso, and your main focus is stopping the bleeding, so you cut open his clothes as you need to and begin fixing him up as best as you can

in the middle of doing this, you see what looks like a tattoo along his ribs. and you think nothing of it, till you realize it's his soulmate mark. he's never mentioned anything about his soulmate, and you couldn't help your twinge of jealousy at the idea of someone out there being his soulmate.

even if you couldn't have your real soulmate, you've come to really care about dabi since you've met him. you don't know if you love him, but you at least have a little secret crush

so, you take a peek, and you get dizzy when you see what it says.

that's your name. your full name. exact.

you're stunned, speechless, can't even process how you feel right now.

and as dabi starts to wake up, and he asks what you're doing, you can't help but weakly say "Touya?"

he mentally curses, immediately realizing you saw his mark. but he can't do anything about it now, and he's kind of stuck laying here with you as you keep him from dying

"...yeah, that's me"

you're confused, you ask him why he never told you, you're rambling out questions and he can't even keep up with it.

'listen, when we met, I heard toga read that name off your chest. I see it almost every day. I've known this whole time, but before, and even now, I have plans I have to carry out. back then I didn't tell you because I couldn't be bothered to care with you, but now I didn't want to tell you because I wouldn't know what to do. I can't promise love, or even being alive, and it seemed easier for you just thinking he, or I, was dead."

you stared at him, processing everything

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have looked without your permission... but, I want you to know that I won't force anything on you. If you want a relationship, I'm more than happy. I'm happy with whatever you give me, even if nothing changes. I just ask that you don't push me away."

he nodded, and told you he promised to keep you around as much as possible, and that was that

he still didn't know what he wanted to do with you, but you grew more attached every day until you could say with certainty that soulmate or not, you were in love with him.

nothing would come of this for a long time though, maybe a few nights of make out sessions with too much sexual tension, but no real talk of feelings or relationships.

you grew kind of comfortable with it like this, even if sometimes you wanted a more stereotypical relationship with all the dumb sappy stuff, you had thought you didn't even have a soulmate for so long that just being near him was a blessing

dabi decided he didn't want to think of you as a soulmate. he didn't want to think he had any sort of obligation to love you or treat you a certain way. if anything was going to come of this, it would be of his own will. not the universes.

which is why it took so long, dabi could always admit you were attractive, and over time you were a great friend and someone he could truly care about, but he didn't know If he LOVED you, he didn't know if he could feel that serious for you

so it took some time, and took some real thinking for him decipher his weird complex feelings towards you, until eventually he decided that yes, he could love you.

but he wanted to wait until he did love you to do anything. and also, your existence didn't change the fact that he had plans and goals he needed to see through

so now, he's just done his big reveal, now the whole world knows who he is, and even though he didn't kill his brother like planned, he still deems it a somewhat success

he's elated to at least have come this far, he could do the rest next time, but right now all he can focus on is how happy you are for him. both for him and that he came out okay somehow. he had told you about his past in little bits, so you didn't need to 'comfort' him in any way, even though it hurt you to think about how awful his life has been

but he has his head on your lap as he stares up at your face, focused as you help him fix the staples for the new scars that have formed from this fight, and he felt so truly comfortable right now.

he has no stress, he had no anxiety about the future, it was just you and him right now.

'I love you, you know'

he spoke so casually, as if you hadn't been waiting your entire life to hear him say those words

in your head you were screaming, crying, everything. but all you could say was

'I love you too'

Shigaraki

You and your soulmate can communicate in your dreams

ever since you were little, every single dream you had consisted of you and a little boy, together in a white room

some of your furthest memories of these dreams were quiet as the two of you kind of just stared at each other, saying nothing

but you recall as one day, you finally said hi. you told him your name, and asked his.

he seemed shy, and nervously scratched at his neck as he answered you, telling you his name was 'Tenko Shimura'

there's blurry memories of you talking to him more and more, learning more about this kid, until he disappeared for a couple weeks

to you, these are just dreams, so you don't think too much of it until he eventually does come back but very different than you remember

the shy expression on his face turned into one of shell shock almost, and his hair had turned completely white

you tried asking what happened, but for a good few weeks (even though he only popped up maybe 5 times at most), he didn't even look at you.

eventually, he did speak, but all he really said was that he got his quirk, and he did something bad

for years after that, you rarely ever saw him. as you grew older you assumed it was because you were growing out of your 'imaginary friend' phase, but every night your dreams always consisted of that empty white room.

eventually you reach high school, and your mental health takes a tank. you can barely sleep, you can barely do anything. so you end up on a night owl schedule, sleeping all day on weekends, up all night every night, and barely sleeping on school days.

and for the first time in probably years, you saw tenko again.

both of you seemed actively surprised at seeing one another, and you can't help but notice how much he's grown as well

he's obviously older, probably the same age as you, his hair has gotten a little longer, his skin doesn't seem to have improved any which makes you a little sad that he hasn't seen a doctor yet, and he looks unhealthily lanky

he's clearly eyeing you too, he kind of forgot that he ever had a partner of sorts in this weird dream world having not seen you in so long

'why are you here?'

'I don't know, because I'm asleep right now i guess'

'do you always sleep during the day? I'm guessing your in Japan too, right?'

'I sleep whenever I want, but usually I'm up all night. and yes, im in japan'

this made you realize something, so you asked 'are you a real person?'

'unfortunately'

this very well could be just a part of your dream. but it makes sense that he very much is another living person. so you want to test it

'hey, I wanna try something. would you be willing to try and go to sleep at the same time?'

he made a weird face at you, clearly confused, 'why would I do that?'

'because this is cool! if you really are a real person, and not just some dream boy, then it'd be fun to have someone to talk to. and if we sleep at the same time, we have all night together'

'why should I care'

'do you have anything better to do in here?'

he was silent, you were right. your dream world wasn't kind enough to give you anything to do, and even tho it didn't necessarily feel like you were in there for hours, it still was a good while to be sitting in an empty white room doing nothing

'fine. what time'

figuring that the only respective time was at night, you had to shift your whole schedule around again, but this led to more frequent meetings with each other

it wasn't every night, there were some nights where he couldn't be bothered to go to bed, or you were too busy to do so, but you saw each other a lot more consistently now

most of the time, you were leading these conversations, asking him questions about his life and stuff, and he answered fairly vaguely unless it was something he actually cared to talk about

which you found was video games. that's all he really did, especially League of Legends

so you made an effort to play some of these games, that way you could understand what he was talking about or talk about the lore with him

for a couple years, you two were best dream friends, even though you never met irl. you always considered asking if you could meet, but he seemed nervous when you asked if you could actually play a game together at some point so you dropped it

as much as he had grown to love these dream times, he was scared to meet you in person. in dreams, there was still a layer of protection between you and him. in real life, you actually get to meet the true and real him.

plus, as he got older, AFO had more and more expectations for him, and soon the League of Villains was formed

this caused him to be busy a lot more, which meant he slept less, which caused his time in the dream world to dwindle again

you understood, you're 20 years old and have your own things to do, but you do miss him when he isn't there

the highlight of your day is seeing him, honestly

however, a few months later, you're scrolling on your phone and you see some news about villains, nothing new really, but a picture included peaks your interest

it's kind of blurry, but the man in the picture of one of the members of this group or villains looks very similar to tenko

and within the next few weeks, as the league becomes more active, more pictures come out and eventually you're positive - that's your dream boy

you honestly don't really care he's a villain all that much, you aren't particularly fond of most heroes, and you can't help but want to go to him

so, you find a way, and with stains message sparking more people to want to join the league it makes it a lot easier for you to do so

as you make your way into this weird little bar, you don't see him at first, you see a few other members who mostly don't really care that you're there. which is fine to you, you're not here for them

you're ready to ask one of them where Tenko is, however, until he turns the corner and makes his way into the room

luckily for him, he notices you before you can yell out his name in excitement, and he loudly says your name in confusion

you run over to him, smiling huge seeing him. you open your mouth, ready to speak, but before you can he tells you to come with him, so you do

he leads you deeper into the base, into what you suspect is his room. it's kind of gross, with dirty clothes and trash everywhere, but you ignore it for now

'why are you here'

it kind of hurts your feelings that he isn't as excited to see you as you are him, but he never has been the most excitable person, so you try to keep that in mind

'I found out a while ago that you were here, and I was really hoping that it wasn't some doppelganger or that it wasn't just a coincidence that this dream person happened to look like a real person.'

'you shouldn't be here. you're not a villain'

'you don't know that. you never told me you were a villain'

he basically went :/ at you, he didn't know what to think really

on one hand, yes, he was excited to see you. but he didn't know what to do with you here. you didn't seem like a villain, maybe your quirk could be useful somehow, but did you even want to actually join the league?

plus, now there is no safety net between you two. and he's terrified. you're the only 'friend' he's ever had, even if it was in his head his whole life, and he doesn't want you to hate him or leave like everyone else

'if you stay here, you have to help. you answer to me. you work for my cause.'

'I can do that'

'also, my name... it's Tomura Shigaraki now. so don't use,, that other name'

you decided not to ask why, and just accepted the situation now.

so from day 1, you were his biggest supporter and friend. whatever your morals were before, you didn't really care now. you were happy here, with this weird little family, and especially with Tomura

every day while not working you were spending time with him, he finally let you play games with him, you were both happy

he started to learn just how much he truly cared about you, you're the only person he truly feels safe with. he feels like himself, you give him the chance to feel happiness instead of just be consumed with hatred every day

'hey, y/n, do you ever wonder why we dream of each other?'

you had gone to sleep a few hours ago, but woke up when you felt weight on your bed, and opened your eyes to see Tomura sitting there staring blankly at the wall

'yeah, I haven't really heard of it before, and I haven't asked anyone since I was little. but they all told me it's just dreams, nothing special'

he said nothing, but he turned to look at you now.

'but, I feel like it has to mean something. something important. it led me to the most important person in my life.'

he couldn't help but smile as you said that, and he nodded, 'I agree. I used to not care about it that much. but I'm glad I got to meet you, in my dreams and especially in real life.'

he was being especially open about his feelings for once, which you loved, but it was also confusing

'tomura, are you okay?'

he was quiet again, this time clearly thinking. you let him, fiddling with your fingers as you waited. you were nervous for some reason

'I don't know. I don't know what this feeling is. Just, you make me happy. nothing else makes me happy. you feel... safe, and warm. everyone else is so meaningless, but I don't know if I could keep going without you. I don't want you going on missions because you might not come back. I want to kill anyone who takes you away from me.'

he was rambling, clearly speaking his thoughts as they came, and your heart was melting the entire time. you didn't want to assume, but you were hopeful

'tomura, do you love me?'

that clicked in his brain. he couldn't word these feelings correctly in his head, but love sounded right. as far as he knew what love was supposed to be, he figured that yes, he did love you

so he nodded again.

'tomura.. I love you too'

he didn't know what to do now. he just sat there for a while, thinking about what this meant.

'can I hug you?'

'you know I can't touch you'

'it's okay, I trust you.'

as you hugged, you eventually felt the palm of his hand against your back, knowing he was being especially careful not to touch you.

'I'm going to let go now, if you want to move your hand.'

'not yet. I like this'

obligatory ramble about postcanon loop ask

and thank you for the excuse to post the. just absolute wall of text that i truncated down to form the tags of that post. (i did,,, hit the tag limit. i forgot tumblr had one of those...) so let me just paste that and tidy it up a bit...

I am putting this under a readmore because it's a bit long. but:

This is like. The General Context for all* of my postcanon doodles? (Except AUs obviously) Like this is the base idea I've been drawing them all in. So, feel free to backread with this in mind. I've basically had this 'postcanon' timeline set in my brain since finishing the game...

My general thoughts are that I like the idea of Loop (even if through dubiously ethical means) being able to slowly reintegrate with the party as a whole new person, because they are, in fact, their own person.

It's a muddle of thematic threads im pulling on and "wouldn't it be fucked up if", but. (at its core, it's powered by the fact that like, while narratively isat's theme of 'the only person who can truly take the first step to help you is yourself'. (wrt: loop helping the party help siffrin in act 5) which i LOVE AND IS GREAT NARRATIVELY…. would be super fucked up irl to learn that your friend 'learned as a lesson' while you stood by kinda uselessly. I know i'd be upset about it. but thats mostly background here. doesn't really come up. at least not until loop has to explain who they are and the party realises they had to fall back on literally themselves again for help, but i digress,)

The real core concept is: Occam's razor. It is like, inherently, a buckwild thing to accuse a person of being somehow a clone or copy of your friend. Even if they start vaguely alluding to a backstory it's far more likely they were some other person before all that. (I still think Odile has that theory in the back pocket but she's rational enough to know it's a really long shot without a solid explanation. and i think Loop deep down knows this, and would, if cornered into confessing, turn the situation around to go J'ACCUSE and make HER explain it instead. Ever longer dodging being direct with their emotions...)

And the party are nice! And if someone has changed and wants to keep stuff secret it's kind of not their business? (Though it's hard not to speculate… see: the main joke of the doodles) And they seem important to Siffrin so they just try to accept them abrasive quirks and all. And eventually the question of their prior identity just fades away since, well, they're Loop. Their friend Loop.

but yeah. personal headcanon is that a few months/weeks after picking up and getting aquainted with Nille** (since that was presumably the IMMEDIATE TASK postgame), Loop reappears (either after a literal period of nonexistance, or just spending a few months wandering the french countryside alone being attacked by wild dogs). Since Siffrin has had a while to be therapised by the party they're doing mostly okay, but Loop showing up and still being agitated/aggressive pulls them both into a bit of a backslide behaviourally and puts the party on the back foot again.

Hooowever, I do think that due to no longer being literally stewing in the worst pressure cooker of all time together, the two do mostly actually sort themselves out with productive conversation. (Via a cycle of: genuinely distressing argument -> weeeird lovebombing -> ok we're good -> repeat, that gets less intense over time)

Thus, allowing the party to just. Integrate loop as a new person. They and Siffrin shuffle into different ecological niches (Loop taking over stuff Siffrin is now too squeamish for, etc (see: hunting, mostly)), and while it's not exactly what Loop wanted they generally get that beggars can't be choosers and it's a pretty good deal. And the rest of the party does straight up just like them as a friend, especially when Loop quits trying to actively antagonise them after a few weeks of being around them, since they just can't keep up being mean to people they like forever.

As for how I think the truth eventually drags itself out. This is where I invoke The Isabeau Torment Nexus™. So its gonna get shippy here for a bit hold on.

Which is, I think giving them time before Loop reappears long enough that Siffrin and Iseabeau actually manage to become established, Isabeau has to be the one to nudge the pair of them and go. "Hey. You know we're in Vaugarde right. I'm okay with polyamory if we all communicate." Before Loop and Siffrin actually even acknowledge that whatever the fuck they have going on kinda looks a lot like a relationship of some kind. (or have already been agonising about that via fighting and arguing, depending) (Obviously this comes after Isa "Emotionally intelligent enough to keep a lid on the jealousy" Beau has managed to use that big brain of his to Not just go Scream somewhere on the daily because oh godddd they keep talking like theyre suicide-baiting each other jesus chriiist. is it overstepping his boundaries to bring that up?? god)

This, taking a bunch of the tension out of Loop and Isabeau's relationship (Since I imagine Loop is a. being weird for the obvious reasons and b. feeling kinda guilty about 'getting in the way of' Siffrin and Iseabeau), allows them to actually get close in a normal friend way. (I think an interesting turning point could be Isabeau actually taking Loop's side in an argument vs Siffrin, which would absolutely break Loop's brain. Especially if it's an argument that matters. Like what do you mean he isn't just going to play favourites. What?)

Then Isabeau, just actually open minded and charmed by Loop (and maybe even somewhat at Siffrin's suggestion?) tries to close the final open side on the polyamory triangle here and that's the final straw for Loop on "This lie by omission is too unethical to keep up, this is just actually sick and wrong. I can't do this while he doesn't know who I am." Though. Obviously it probably goes. Very poorly with emotions high like that. And the added element of several months of deceit. Getting dark here for a second but that dagger is going MISSING and so are THEY for a hot minute.

Then yaaay everything works out in the end 👍 yippieee!! all it took was maybe a lot of harrowed recontextualisation of all the weird shit your new friend said and did when it turns out they're your old friend. It's fine.

But yeah. this is basically the context all of my postcanon doodles have existed within? And those exist to give other people something to chew on. So this does too.

I suppose TL;DR: Imagine if sloopis almost fucking happens before isabeau knows who loop is. can you fucking imagine. can you imagine having to navigate that. nightmare.

*Yes this includes the implied cannibalism comic. Uhh. Comes part and parcel with headcanoning that Loop went way off the deep end similar to A5 Sif But Maybe Worse before giving in. Add weepy half-asleep confessions to murder wherever you see fit in your mind palace. 👍👍👍

**Re: Nille footnote. I don't have anywhere to put this besides here! I have some thoughts on Loop and Nille having an odd dynamic. I don't imagine Nille to be super gung-ho on trusting a bunch of adults (even if they are majority around her age) given their implied backstory. It's probably a big shock to the system, especially since Bambouche is a good couple hundred Kilometers up north from Dormont and these guys don't seem to have trains. She would've been unfrozen and without Bonnie for some time....

Which is to say: I think she's suspicious of them. I think she may be looking for excuses to distance herself, keep Bonnie safe. SO.... A new guy showing up? And antagonising the party? What do they know that I don't...? I should find out.

And since... Loop didn't ever know Nille, they have no ammunition or real reason to be cruel. Plus, if they're trying to stay on Bonnie's good side (SINCE... if Bonnie thought Loop was cringe they may as well kill themselves. In their mind.) they SUPER have no reason to antagonise Nille.

Mostly, they might be able to open up to each other easier than they can the rest of the party?

I feel like this resolves with Loop feeling compelled to apologise for what they and Siffrin let happen to Bonnie, though... Hmm... Depends on how you interpret Nille that they'd be glad nobody else had been told about that yet, or furious it had been secret this long. I lean toward the former.

i think the main feeling i have about this season so far is that i crave to see MORE, but not in a good way. i love the themes this season is working with, i love the conflicts, i love the characters but it feels like i don't see enough of the story playing out and it leaves me feeling like something is missing.

I wanted to SEE and experience the underground resistance growing, i wanted to actually see how Jinx became a symbol and how that united the underground. I wanted to see the process of it and how it affected her! I feel like the writers really should've gone with the traditional show-don't-tell rule here instead of just showing us the aftermath which left me with exactly zero emotions about such crazy impressive and important events. The entire Underground got united (!!!!) but we saw zero of the unification process and got like two scenes before they were all arrested, released and then the entire revolution idea was completely forgotten and not addressed once in the rest of the act (as far as I recall).

Jinx was clearly struggling with the newfound worship, so much so she went into HIDING. how must've she felt knowing that so many people find hope in her when she sees herself as a literal jinx? how did she deal with becoming people's hope instead of their curse? I wanted to see her work through this so bad since that is what Arcane has always been good at, it's what season one did so well - it walked you through the emotions and motives and therefore, the conclusion to personal plot lines felt SATISFYING and left massive impression. this was completely missing for me this act for most plot lines

Same goes for pitfighter!Vi and her descent into self-destructive hell. We don't get to see the emotional fall out of her being fucking punched and left lying on the ground by the only person she thought she had left - we just got a montage showing the aftermath of her spiraling. which is cool but it left me with feeling pretty much nothing about it all because seeing the conclusion to her struggling without the build-up just fell flat for me. i was looking forward this specific internal conflict of the protector archetype with nothing left to protect and therefore completely losing themselves before finding their purpose again SO much and it ended up being completely brushed over. i wanted to be able to pick Vi's thoughts apart when she was at her lowest point in life since her time in the jail and see how her behaviour and relationship with people/alcohol/violence changes in the process. like later in act 2 when she punches Isha, she doesn't even react (holy shit?). that is SO far from the Vi we saw in act 1 of this season and it feels super out of character because we did not actually get to SEE her behaviour and priorities changing - we can obviously figure out the reason and understand why she ended up this way but since we weren't actually shown how it happened, it still initially felt like it came out of nowhere and majorly ooc for the character we've known so far

and don't even let me start with Cait and her dictator arc. I was getting ready for the emotional fall out and internal conflict and the political powerplay with Embessa but we got SO LITTLE of it. i could go on and on about this but i feel like a lot of people might agree her dictator arc was pretty underdeveloped so I am not going to discuss it further (plus the immediate switch when she met Vi again was just ??? because we can't really see how she feels about this entire thing with the exception of her thinking Embessa is too brutal and that it seems to be weighting on her. PLUS she has at least a situationship with that sunshine enforcer and even tho she is clearly mentally elsewhere, we have no reason to think she is still pinning after Vi?).

I'm not even going to address Jayce because What.

On a positive note, I think Victor's arc has been handled pretty damn well. But aside from that, this season just leaves me craving more and it is quite clear to me the writers absolutely did not have enough time (nine episodes is not a lot) to develop the story they wanted to portray in full.

Now, I watched the latest three episodes while on a plane and since the act is so plot heavy, i might have totally missed or misunderstood something, lemme know if that is the case

Man, playing X Definitive Edition really reminds me of how much I love the women in this game, and just generally how they get handled.

That Elma is this person who everyone looks up to and looks to for guidance, even the leadership of NLA. That she is somebody who always prefers diplomacy and a peaceful solution over just immediately fighting someone, but is still perfectly fine with fighting if it can't be avoided. That, sure, she's pretty and some characters remark on that, but that these mentions are so extremely sparse that it barely comes up. That she's allowed to be wrong in her approach to things (chapter 11), but it doesn't invalidate her approach in general. She basically fills a role similar to Dunban in 1 for the story, and does so while being more important than he is to that game's story.

That Lin just gets to be this little teenage gremlin who says and does silly things that are appropriate for her age, but also grows as a person over the course of the story and gets to be more compassionate and understanding to the people around her. That she as an asian-american young teenage girl gets to fill the role that in other Xenoblade games get filled by white(-ish? These are Japanese games, after all) teenage guys like Shulk, Rex or Noah. That she is allowed to have her own moments of weakness and being emotional, and have them be just about her, and not how those affect other characters.

That even though Irina is one of the main story party members, she is still the leader of her own team, and noted to be one of the best. That even though her whole dynamic with Gwin looks like it is set up in such a way that he eventually gets to swoop in and be there for her as a protector/partner that never actually happens, and she is never even implied to reciprocate his feelings and clearly has some of her own for Elma. That she is allowed to have her moments of anger, but not have them be treated like a major issue.

That Murderess is allowed to be a character who's morally gray at best. That she does have her moments and bits of being nicer than she lets one, but how it doesn't override who she is. And that her attitude isn't something that needs to be "fixed" or ends up getting "fixed" at the end of her story.

That Hope is a character who is all caring and nurturing to others, and even though she is taken advantage of because of that, that also doesn't mean that she needs to change who she is.

That Alexa gets to be this super energetic Skell fanatic and that her lack of interest in romance isn't something that needs "fixing". That she actually stands out in the cast in that while everyone has a personal tragedy in their past that they are working to overcome, the life-changing events that she went through instead gave her a positive new outlook on life, something to to live for.

That Celica has all the look of a "soft" fantasy princess, but still is fierce in her resolve to not have Rock fight, going even so far as to go against her own principles and fight herself.

That Mia may be a mostly comic relief character, but that she still has her own depths and outlook on life, and that her whole sidequest chain still ends up with her growing as a person before becoming playable.

And while I have only seen the basic recruitment missions for Neilnail and Liesel, they seem to be just as good as the others, so I no worries that they are going to be bad compared to the others.

As much as I like Xenoblade 1 and 3, I still think that X handled its women the best. And all this while not tangling up any of them in a romance subplot!

I don't know if you've already talked about this but I didn't find anything about it on your blog. Do you have a headcanon for Snape's voice? I know you talked about a Hinterland accent but do you imagine him having the same voice as the movies' actor or a different kind?

Well, I am a bit torn about it. On one hand I really do like Rickman's voice (it's very pretty and deep and has a lot of presence) but it is Rickman!Snape's voice. And my inner Snape is not Rickman anymore even tho I still enjoy his performance.

It depends a bit on the build I like to give him, which these days is: tall-ish (177cm?) and still quite scrawny. The robes (especially the cloak) are here to widen his physical presence, make him look more imposing (and dramatic. he's likes to be dramatic). And while I like him having a deep-ish voice when he's calm, I imagine him going quite high-pitched when he's emotional.

Headcanons time:

As a child his voice was quite high. He talked in a soft manner already (a response to his father's temper) as if he had a hard time taking space or feared what he wanted to say wasn't welcomed or important enough.

When he was excited about something though, he got louder and his pitch got higher. He also talked quite a bit with his hands.

I think the bullying he suffered stunned his growth a little so his voice changed a bit later than the other boys (is there a word in English for that? in french we use 'molt'), when he was 16.

The few months during which his voice broke, he almost never opened his mouth, not even in class, so that no one would tease him about it. It was the beginning of his 6th year and nobody was coming near him anyway. He was utterly miserable and lonely since Lily didn't talk to him anymore and he hid a lot from the world during that time.

It did make his voice go quite a bit lower. The first person who commented on it was his mother the next summer. She said he 'didn't sound like himself anymore'. He didn't know what to make of that - but it sadly resonated with how he felt deep inside (the teen angst was real).

I hc him as being able to make his voice go lower from that point on but only when he talks slowly and calmly. Every time he gets emotional it goes higher again - even when he's talking about things he likes.

The way Snape talks has been thoroughly analyzed in this incredible meta by @said-snape-softly (and in it we can see he never 'drawls'!). It's super interesting and it gives us quite a lot of information about his personality. The three main textures are soft, cold and sardonic. He's soft-spoken, yet very intense as well, especially when he gets mad.

He was still quite rough around the edges after school but during his time with Lucius (who actually complimented his voice quite a few times) he learned to control his tone (and temper). This is when he developed his famous 'silky' texture.

When he gets angry but remains calm, his voice does go deeper.

Same when he has to mention something that affects him (if he was to talk about Lily or his parents).

He takes pride in the way he talks. He knows the power of words and takes pleasure in yielding them like weapons - especially when he whispers - it's even tastier on his tongue.

One important thing about Snape, imo, is how much he needs attention. He craves it. My hc of him talking softly in his childhood comes from fear but as an adult it's a power-move: people need to be quiet to hear him. They need to crane their necks in his direction to get what he's saying, he's forcing them to listen.

But all shits get loose when they don't.

When he's triggered or looses patience he immediately snaps and talks very loudly. Instant crack of the mask. He barks, he snarls, he spits, he bellows, he shrieks. And as he looses his temper, I think he also looses control over his tone and pitch. It gets higher, more emotional and it's often to his detriment. And the revolt he feels a that moment trigger him even more as it reminds him of his teen years.

If he was to be pushed too far he could yell a lot. He could hurt his voice from all the anger stirring inside of him. His vocal cords couldn't be able to handle it.

If he was to cry - like really cry, pure ugly, unfiltered sobbing - it would 100% crack and break.

I've talked about that one already, but when the mask slips even lower (when he's really angry or really vulnerable during sex), his midlands accent comes back sometimes.

I think his cold tone is part of him, yes, but it's part of his persona (notably the spy). In his 'normal' state he's more like... softly sardonic?

Sometimes I like to imagine him as having a more nasally voice, just because I think it would suit him when he's throwing jabs at people.

Okay, buckle up, friends and neighbours, because it's time for:

THE DOOPLISS DISSERTATION

(Obviously, you should take all of this with a HUGE chunk of salt, since I'm not only an internet-poisoned fandom blogger, but also a former English major with a penchant for over-reading.

Still, I spent a long time writing this, so I'd appreciate it if you gave it a read.)

So before we talk about Doopliss himself, I feel like we should talk about Creepy Steeple, since a lot of the topics I'm going to be touching on relate to the actual building.

Neither the original Gamecube version nor the Switch remake really bothers to explain what Creepy Steeple actually is.

None of Goombella's tattles say anything about the building's intended purpose. The name vaguely implies that it's a church of some kind -- in Japanese, it's called Odoron Jiin, or "Astonishing Temple" -- but that's still not very helpful.

Still, for the purposes of this analysis, I'm going to assume that it's meant to be a church.

This brings me to the Steeple's stained glass window, which shows a scary-looking Doopliss standing over some piranha plants.

From a design standpoint, I'm guessing that this detail was added to give the location a spooky vibe, but from an in-universe perspective, the implications are wild.

Like, who designed this? How long ago? And why? What the heck is it supposed to represent?

Unsurprisingly, the game offers no real answers, but I have a couple of theories.

The first is that the people of Twilight Town (or their ancestors, or something) created the window in Doopliss's honor.

Stained glass windows often depict saints or angels, so maybe the Twilighters used to worship him? Like, maybe Creepy Steeple was once dedicated to him and then, for whatever reason, the worshippers decided to leave?

It's not super likely, but I didn't want to rule out any possibilities. This is a weird freaking temple. Literally anything is possible, as far as I'm concerned.

My second theory is that Doopliss designed the window himself. He seems like a guy with a lot of spare time, so it's not too much of a stretch to say that he came up with the idea and then spent weeks building it by hand.

He could have also bullied the Boos into constructing it for him. I dunno. I just have this mental image of him pulling pranks on them and generally being a nuisance until they caved.

The bottom line is someone wanted to Doopliss's face to be front and center. And if that someone is Doopliss himself, then hoo boy, there is a lot to unpack here.

Maybe I'm projecting, but it feels like Doopliss is wrestling with some major self-esteem issues.

Despite being an incredibly powerful shapeshifter who somehow cursed an entire town, he seems very childish. He spends all his time watching TV and coming up with new jokes. He throws tantrums when he loses. He wears a party hat, of all things.

Based on that, I'd say that he's probably starved for attention. He's probably pretty lonely living in Creepy Steeple all by himself (doubly so if my theory about the Twilighters is correct).

I'd even go so far as to say that his scheme to turn the Twilighters into pigs is motivated by this need for attention. I mean, what better way to get people to notice you than to cause a town-wide panic?

I feel like the disguises he uses over the course of the main story also support this theory.

Though Mario, Zip Toad and Professor Frankly are quite different from one another, they all have one important thing in common: they're famous. Mario's a world-renowned adventurer, Zip Toad is a well-known actor and Frankly is a tenured professor whose students love him.

Doopliss even alludes to this after stealing Mario's body, telling him, "You're so popular around here! I just love being you!"

By transforming into beloved figures, Doopliss can get the attention he craves.

I also think that this is why he joined the Shadow Sirens. Sure, Beldam abuses him almost as badly as she abused Vivian, but at least she notices him. That's better than nothing.

The most conclusive piece of textual evidence is found in the epilogue. In her letter to Mario, Goombella explains that Doopliss has joined Flurrie on-stage in her production of "Paper Mario".

Obviously his shapeshifting abilities make the play a lot more realistic, but why would he bother participating in it at all? This guy was a villain for most of the game. Why would he suddenly decide to join up with one of his enemies?

Because, as far as I can tell, he's not a villain. Just a guy who's sick of being ignored.

I dunno. Doopliss's motivations have never been super clear, but I feel like there's more to him than meets the eye.

I’ve seen those stupid g2 budget cheerleading dolls way too many times in my life so you know what? Fuck it I’m rating them. Out of five. Worst to best.

At fifth: Draculaura 2/5

The one you always see, the horror, the myth, the infamous. And I get it. Definitely the weakest of the group.

If you’re doing a molded on top it’s kinda important to… see the molded details? Which thanks to the super glossy black I’m struggling to.

Also the skirt is ever so slightly a different shade of pink to the shoes and skullette on her chest and that’s bothering me.

And the skirt top hem being blue. Because of course. Can’t have g2 Draculaura without the ugliest shade of blue possible somewhere on the design. Stop trying to make blue on Draculaura a thing. It’s never gonna be a thing.

Hair is completely unstyled which i expect on dolls this cheap but I appreciate them blending in a little pink. Thought they’d just make it completely black.

That and the molded on shoe design being kinda cute pull it up from being a straight up one to me.

Those do be shoes I wouldn’t mind her wearing forever. Which she will. Cause they’re molded on.

At forth: frankie 2.5/5

This would genuinely be higher if it wasn’t for the shade of pink they used for the molded on top.

Because their face is genuinely quite cute as g2 faces go. Think it’s the blush and lip colour pulling a lot weight but still. Praise shall be applied where applicable.

But that pink top… it’s so garish. Especially contrasting the blue. It becomes hard to look at. Pink isn’t even g2 Frankies mandatory extra colour! That’s yellow!

Which as much as I dislike it? Might have genuinely been the better option here (core g2 Frankies bag for colour reference. Make the top itself the blue and make the top’s emblem and the skirt yellow. It’d re contextualise the jagged skirt as a lightning themed skirt with no added budget change.)

The shoe mold is nothing to write home about. They tried to do a lightning shape to the heel but since it’s unpainted it doesn’t read clearly. But it’s nothing awful or offensive.

Same issues as Draculaura honestly. But put slightly above due to an admittedly pretty face.

At third: cleo 3/5

The one I always forget is in this line. Which makes sense as she’s the most… inoffensive?

She’s where they actually started to try doing something interesting with the molded on tops though. With it only having one strap and having a mummy wrappings texture to it.

Which gives her a unique vibe to the others I guess?

She’s in the middle for a reason I don’t have much to say.

G2 cleo almost always is the most average of a line to me. Her aesthetic was probably the most neutered in g2 but it’s also an aesthetic that’s easy to simplify so it never usually looks bad.

At second: lagoona 4/5

Lagoona is one of the main ghouls I’ve always said looks the best in g2. Her aesthetics actually work quite well when softened as you begin to fall into pastels.

She probably has the best molded top design for me. Lagoona looks good with a halterneck (fashion tumblr forgive me if that’s the wrong term. I tried googling it and every guide gave a different name that was just the most common one.) and the bubbles/ scales pattern is cute!

Her hair actually has a light curl to it which puts her above the others hair wise and her molded on shoes detail reads clearly!

It would genuinely be my favourite if I didn’t have an admittedly very biased first pick.

At number one!: clawdeen 5/5

I’m sorry I know on technical merit lagoona is better.

But I have such a weak spot for clawdeen in green. I really do.

It’s always been my favourite colour to see on clawdeen and they don’t put her in it nearly enough.

But g2 actually made it her mandatory extra colour! So a lot of g2 clawdeens have green and this one does too!

I also do really like the mold of the top itself. I like the way it’s cut up into sections with the animal print cleanly placed into each one. None of her colours clash which is a relief.

It’s a biased pick for sure. But it’s also my list.

How would you rate the dolls in arguably the most infamous line in monster high?

G2 gets dunked on a lot so I find it interesting to look it’s design work with an unbiased eye!

did you see the spoilers for ml season 6 where there’s a new girl with a prosthetic leg and that leg ends up broken and marinette’s involved somehow? honestly i’m gonna give marinette the benefit of the doubt for now and just assume this is either a huge misunderstanding/accident or extremely misleading spoiler just because this is a serious thing, like I was super disappointed with how her character’s written in season 4 and 5 but I just don’t want to believe the writers would come up with something like this when this would easily be one of the worst things she’s ever done (if she’s actually responsible). I saw the spoiler on TikTok and there’s several explanations I’ve seen in the comments:

the new girl (idr her name) is lila/cerise in disguise and she wants to ruin marinette’s reputation (iirc the writers said she’s nice and not a villain but maybe they just don’t want to spoil the plot for obvious reasons)

marinette didn’t have bad intentions/it was an accident/misunderstanding/spoilers are too misleading/not enough information yet

and my least favorite explanation…the new girl was trying to get with adrien (some fans are saying this to say this is all part of her scheme to get adrien to break up with marinette and date her instead but some are saying this to justify marinette if she was actually at fault for this)

I think my main concern is how the writers are going to address this. What if they try to justify it if marinette really was at fault? Or what if it’s all a misunderstanding but then they put the new girl to the side to focus on how sad this is for marinette? Are they going to be able to address this in a way that doesn’t come across as ableist while also not making their protagonist look like a bad person? What do you think?

I just saw the leak, but at first I couldn't find it, so I’d already written a response before that, so here's me describing the possible nightmare scenarios before the writers proved me right about their priorities:

Like, hot take, but it doesn’t matter what the new girl is doing, messing with her mobility aid would still be absolutely unforgivable. Even if it’s Lila in disguise, Marinette has already exhibited so much ableism in trying to prove her disabilities aren’t real that I would just say that the writers shouldn’t be allowed to as much as mention any disability ever again. “A person claiming they’re disabled could be lying to get special considerations, so make sure to check any claims of disability, no matter how awful you come across for doing it,” is not a lesson that has any place in a children’s cartoon, even accidentally. And that’s exactly what any scenario with a girl faking a disability / using their disability to get closer to Adrien would entail as well, the idea that we should be suspicious of disabled people trying to “cheat” their way to things that “belong” to us.

But, like, even if it actually is going to be aiming to be an actual lesson in disabilities where it’s all a misunderstanding/mistake, the thing is that, lately, I’ve been looking back at the “lessons” in this show, even in the earlier seasons, and I just don’t have faith in these writers’ ability to deliver any kind of moral to kids in a consistent way, unless they’re going to have a character directly talk to the screen to explain what the moral is.

Let’s use ‘The Mime’ as an example. The scenario in this episode is that Marinette, through her clumsiness, deletes the most important video Alya had filmed so far, and then spends the rest of the episode trying to recreate the video in order to cover up for her mistake. In the end, it turns out there was no problem because Alya had already saved a copy of the video because she expected something like Marinette deleting it to happen, so she was never even mad or disappointed, but Marinette still sets up Alya to get a one-on-one interview with Ladybug. What did Marinette learn in this episode exactly?

The most good faith interpretation of the episode is that the point is that you own up and make up for your mistakes, hence Marinette setting Alya up to get an interview with Ladybug. But this message is muddled up by the fact that, even before the retool, the writers didn’t want Marinette suffering any real consequences for messing up, or to show her messing up in a way that couldn’t be “fixed”, so the video was actually safe and no irreparable damage was done. Alya had foreseen that Marinette would mess up and planned accordingly. This takes the wind out of the sails of the lesson because of course Marinette would do something nice for Alya, who’s such a considerate friend who never gets mad at her and plans around Marinette’s flaws. It’s a pretty different thing to go out of your way to apologise or make things up to someone who is actually mad at you for a good reason, and it requires a lot more courage. The situation in ‘The Mime’ is the easiest version of this situation imaginable for Marinette, but completely unrealistic for anyone facing this kind of situation in real life.

So, with this kind of previous showing back when I still had faith in this show, how would I expect them to deal with Marinette accidentally messing with someone’s mobility aid post-retool? I’d expect a lot of focus on how upsette Marinette is, because that’s the show’s number one priority outside of the love quest, with the show going out of it’s way to make it very clear that Marinette didn’t mean to, she feels really bad about it and she’s scared of how the new girl will react. At the end of the episode she would gather her courage and face the music, and it turns out the new girl was actually getting a new mobility aid that very same day and she wouldn’t have needed the old one any longer anyway. And then Marinette will maybe make some gesture of friendship that the new girl gladly accepts, no hard feelings. Any normal person would still be pissed about their expensive mobility aid being messed with, but the writers of this show never have characters react normally when the normal thing to do is not instantly forgive Marinette. So this scenario would be making things easy for Marinette, but completely unrealistic for the viewing audience.

Simply put, I really, really really hope the sneak preview is purposefully misleading, as they tend to be, and the crew doesn’t try to tackle the topic of physical disabilities with their tendency to favor the perspective of their coddled, able-bodied protagonist.

After seeing the leak:

So, like, fucking hell, way to further sully the idea that Marinette ever took her job as Ladybug seriously. Just to make herself look like the victim when she’s caught stalking someone (something she insisted last season she’d stopped doing), she goes so far as faking being Akumatized, transforming into Ladybug and jumping right in the middle of the field, of this girl's path, to scream about an Akuma attack. Like, the reveal that Sublime knew there was actually no Akuma and that Tomoe apparently made the leg less sturdy on purpose doesn’t make it better when Marinette got Sublime slippery and then startled her enough to make her slip. People break perfectly fine legs from slipping, it's why anti-skid devices sell so well in winter. All of this being an accident doesn’t make it okay, and Marinette sure as hell didn’t have anything close to those “good intentions” her stans love to attribute to her.

But, of course, her victim is going to be a perfect flawless angel who wasn't even upset about the stalking, instead defending Marinette to Ladybug, just in case saying: “this girl I know pretended to be Akumatized because she was caught stalking me” might make Marinette look bad to the audience. She also instantly reassures Ladybug, the one who actually caused her to slip, who hasn't done anything more than stare at her slack-jawed, because god forbid anyone ever say anything about Marinette that isn't validation or praise while she's too busy freaking out about herself.

Like, Marinette causes Sublime to break her leg, and we instantly see the victim in this situation go: “I’m okay, I’m not hurt”, while Marinette just stands there having her personal little panic attack. Like, a girl lost her leg, and the writers still try to sell Marinette as the injured party by having the victim insist she's okay while Marinette is having another one of her manipulative, please-feel-sorry-for-me-audience emotional breakdowns. The writers seriously made Marinette’s victim prioritize reassuring her over anything else.

I knew the writers were going to have Marinette be instantly forgiven, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so instant that she didn’t even get to finish processing her fuck-up. Or to go so out of their way to make Marinette seem less at fault because, like, Tomoe messing with the leg on purpose isn't a villain scheme, it was just to make Marinette look better in comparison.

The writers have this ability where, when I write down what I think would be a very likely way for one of their stories to go very badly, they do just that while still managing to make it worse.

The deal gave us a reason. The day gave us the time. A little get-together. Nothing fancy—just a way to let the week fade out. A reward.

Today, we closed an important deal and, I don’t know, it felt like a good excuse to do something. It was Friday, maybe some people didn’t have big plans yet. I went desk to desk suggesting the idea of a little get-together at my place.

“To celebrate,” I said. “I’ll host, just bring something to drink.”

Most people agreed without hesitation. The plan spread quickly. I just hoped it reached her. I don’t know why, but when it came time to walk over to her desk, I just couldn’t do it. My feet betrayed me and led me back to my office.

Just in case, I sent a message in the 'social' group chat I hadn’t opened in a few days:

Reminder! Dinner at my place tonight with the office crew. Super chill. Come by if you want.

I cleaned like I was expecting important guests. Moved the couch, made a playlist. Turned on a few lamps and managed to create a cozy enough vibe. I didn’t do it for everyone. I did it for her, to be honest.

Even though she never actually said she'd come. In fact, she didn’t say anything, but I wanted to be ready just in case.

It was almost eight. I wasn’t sure who’d show up first. Maybe no one yet. Maybe all at once. Maybe she wouldn’t show up at all.

I poured myself a cold drink, just to keep my hands busy. Checked my phone even though I wasn’t expecting any messages. Sat down. Got up. Walked to the door just to make sure the buzzer was working. One last look around. Everything ready.

Then the doorbell rang. The one at my apartment, not the main entrance.

I walked over without thinking too much, expecting to see one of the regulars. One of the guys who already knows the front door code.

But no, it was her.

“Hey, right on time,” I said mostly to myself, seeing her look up from her phone, checking if this was the right apartment.

“Hi, a lady downstairs was just leaving and let me in. Am I too early?” she asked, with that half-smile that blanks my brain for a solid half-second.

I don’t know what face I made. Probably a mix of surprise, nerves, and that silly joy that comes when things go right without you fully planning it.

“No, c'mon in. Still tidying up a bit, but it's all good.”

I gestured for her to come in. It was her first time here, of course. I could tell by the way she looked around, like every corner was saying something about me. And it probably was.

“Nice place...” she said, stepping in almost shyly. I found it cute.

“Thank you. Wanna see the place a bit…? I mean, if you want. It’s small anyway.”

She nodded and walked with me. I showed her the living room, the kitchen, pointed out where the bathroom was, and when I opened the door to the small balcony, she stepped out.

“This is nice. So quiet. You’ve got a great view...” she said, looking out at the city lights.

“You’re gonna love the roof. We’ll probably head up there later, once everyone’s here,” I said, leaning on the doorframe.

She looked back at me over her shoulder and smiled. My mental camera skills are still sharp.

We went back inside. I closed the door softly, like that would keep the calm inside for a few more minutes. I offered her a drink and she accepted with a relaxed smile. We sat on opposite ends of the couch but turned slightly toward each other.

It all felt a bit improvised, but good. Like when something doesn’t go perfectly, but still works just right.

She looked comfortable. You could tell by her posture, by the way she glanced around with curiosity and then back right at me. Almost with that same ease I see at the office daily.

We talked about light stuff. Music, the weird weather that week, a random comment about the new client who brought in the deal we were celebrating. We laughed once, both at the same time, and for a moment I forgot we were waiting for others to arrive.

To me, it felt like five minutes. In reality, it was fifteen—almost twenty.

Twenty minutes where it was just both of us.

Then came the second buzz. This one from the lobby.

She looked down at her glass, like the sound reminded her we weren’t alone. I got up without saying anything, smiling without meaning to as I walked over to the buzzer.

People began arriving bit by bit, in loose waves. Quickly, the place filled with a warm and fun atmosphere. We ordered some pizzas and drinks were passed around all night.

I learned her favorite drink. Coincidentally, one of the few I know how to make. I noticed that when there was general laughter, my eyes would search for hers, and hers seemed to look for mine too. That was nice.

After a few hours, we all went up to the rooftop to continue the night with more space and to enjoy the warm evening weather. I got to talk to her a bit more. Every now and then, we’d end up alone again, slightly apart from the group. It was interesting to get to know her outside of work.

A lot happened. We all laughed, shared casual chats, and had a few quieter moments between drinks. Even Chris showed up for a bit, grabbed some food, had a few conversations, and apparently left with one of my coworkers. Monday will be interesting in the office.

The night slowly faded, like it didn’t want to end either. Some people left around one. Others stuck around, dragging out the last bits of conversation and drinks.

At some point, she settled into a lounge chair near me. Crossed her legs while playing with her nearly empty glass, listening to the conversation, though her eyes weren’t as focused anymore. Now and then, her gaze drifted. Like she was already thinking about the next day. Or the ride home. I moved a bit closer without realizing.

“You far from here? Want me to call you an Uber or somethin'?” I asked quietly.

“Not too far, don’t worry. I was just about to get one.” she said, pulling her phone from her pocket.

Five minutes later, her phone buzzed—the ride was outside. She stood, adjusted her clothes a bit, and gave me a different kind of smile. Softer, closer.

“Thanks for inviting me,” she said, simple. Quietly.

“Thank you for coming,” I replied, and it sounded more honest than I expected. "C'mon. I'll walk you downstairs."

We took the elevator down in comfortable silence. There were no gaps to fill.

We said goodbye, both of us mentioning how nice it had been and that we should do it again sometime.

I stayed on the sidewalk, watching her get into the car. I waved one last time before heading back up.

“lemme know when you get home, bwt.” I texted as the elevator climbed.

I said goodbye to the last people still in my place. When I closed the door for the final time, the apartment felt bigger. Quieter, despite the faint playlist still running. I picked up a few empty cups, half-tidied the kitchen, turned off a few lights.

I didn’t go to bed right away. I stayed on the couch messing around on my phone, just waiting. It had only been about ten minutes since her Uber pulled away.

“just got home. Thanks again, it was a great night! Talk soon!"

“Anytime. Glad you came, it was nice to have you here. Sweet dreams!”

S6 ep speculation

Get ready to hear my 80% wrong predictions even though I’m like, super not caught up on this show! It’s still fun to guess. Also this post will be generally leak-free so don’t go replying to it with “uhhh actually from the leaks we know this and that”. Not the place. Warning, this post is incredibly long.

1) Climatiqueen

I lean into the microphone and say, “Aurore”. The crowd erupts into cheers and fervent applause. Everyone shouts and whistles and pumps their arms in the air.

Interesting that they went with the French name for both translations, and she clearly seems to be a powered up version of stormy weather. It’s so fitting to circle around and start this new arc and new butterfly user off with the OG… I just hope we’ll get to learn a little about her character this time (doubtful). She’s gone to the main cast’s school this whole time and was Marc and Zoe’s classmate. It’d be great if they made her an actual recurring character instead of a special NPC. The children yearn for a character who acts like a cunty Mean Girl but isn’t actually a bad person.

I’m guessing this episode will serve as a general intro to the new world, showing us a typical day in the life of LB & CN kind of like the original pilot without dropping any important main plot developments.

2) Dessinatriste/The Illustrhater

Why is nobody talking about how funny the English name is, that’s hilarious. The haterrr. I’m getting very different vibes from both translations emotions-wise. The English title makes it sound like they’re petty or angry rather than sad.

My first thought was Nath because the name follows similar conventions as Dessinateur/Evillustrator in both languages and as one of the earliest and most iconic akumas it might continue this idea of Lila following in Gabriel’s footsteps while first learning how to butterfly.

In early s1, Gabriel was still experimenting with his powers while figuring out what does and doesn’t work when making an akuma. Well actually, since it was Gabriel, he learned absolutely nothing and was shocked when making the same mistakes over and over didn’t give him different results.

I think putting Lila through that same test drive phase would show her being much more analytical and actually develop her skills based on what she learns. In s1, Gabriel had a hard time making The Evillustrator do what he wanted, going so far as to like bloodbend him, then never targeted him again. If Lila was in that situation, she might figure out how to be more persuasive/manipulative/motivational or just learn that she has to choose akumas who will align with her goals in the first place.

Nath is also majorly due for character development. And he might be a pro level hater. It’s odd and a shame that we’ve only seen him once while every other class character has been akumatized like a hundred times atp. I think it’s most likely him.

I’ve seen people bring up that the French name sounds like a pun on the feminine form of the word. While Nath might be a diva, my counter argument is that this might be referring to Kagami, who is also interested in illustration and a girl. <- LMAO [insert Kagaminette joke], I mean “and is a girl”.

We haven’t heard much about her artistic journey in a long time even though it was important enough to mention in that trading card game where they said she secretly wants to make her own manga but lacks the confidence to start even though she has it planned out (super paraphrased).

Since Tomoe will become a greater villain, this could be the opportunity to show it since she’s the reason Kagami is self-conscious about her art. Maybe Tomoe will provoke Kagami into getting akumatized on purpose to test out Lila’s abilities or use her somehow. I’m not sure what her motivations are. Kagami does have, what, four different akuma forms already not counting powered-up ones? Crazy evolution tree, why not add more.

This might be an episode where Kagami becomes more comfortable pursuing what she wants and finding support among Marinette and friends instead of looking for Tomoe’s validation, continuing the plot line from Perfection. Once again, I don’t think it’s likely to be her tho.

3) Sublimation

I’ve seen the leaks and I believe everything I’ve seen has been from this episode. I feel comfortable saying this since it was already released in the official trailer, but the villain here is the coach woman. This episode seems to mostly be focused on this new runner girl character. I won’t elaborate because I don’t think any of the other stuff I know about this ep was in official material, but yeah, very much a new character situation.

You’d think this episode would have something to do with the power of the rooster miraculous, but there is absolutely no indication of that. I like to imagine the writers have a “word of the day” calendar at the office, and when they learned the word sublimation they were like, “hollllyyyy shit you guys, we need more people to know about this”.

4) Daddycop

I expect this to be a Sabrina-centric development episode and would be shocked if it’s not. Her relationship with Roger is pretty interesting since they seem to be on good, loving terms, yet he’s okay with all the Chloe bs and seems apathetic or ignorant to how Sabrina was being treated. Maybe we’ll see some rebellion from her now that she hangs out with other people.

The akuma’s name, to me, implies that Sabrina will be responsible for Roger’s akumatization or at least the main focus of it. Maybe he will become overly protective of her and target anyone who fucks with her or worry that she’s straying from the right path and exaggeratedly try to correct her behavior.

Sabrina’s behavior up to around Penalteam was likely informed by Roger’s influence, possibly more-so than Chloe’s. He had this “doing what you’re told is right” mindset that he instilled in his daughter, so in this episode, she might help him unlearn it. As a cop, he was always mindlessly bossed around by Mayor Bourgeois, so since Andre is gone, Roger will have to think for himself more.

5) Papys Garous/Werepapas

Continuing the theme of dramatic dads, the consensus seems to be that this will be Tom and probably Rolland. I’m not sure why, but Marinette’s always getting up to some silly billy antics, so. Tom doesn’t seem to have any issue with Adrien and idk what type of beef is gonna start for the grandpa to get involved. It might be some misunderstanding situation or another “Chat Noir is on our fucking balcony again, get the broom” moment.

It might very well be the mom and dad though, not the dad and grandpa. People have been talking about how it’s unrealistic that Marinette has been able to keep huge secrets from her parents for so long, so they might snap this time, not because of Adrien, but because she’s been acting shady herself. They might assume she’s getting into trouble. People have been long speculating that Sabine will learn Ladybug’s identity soon, so maybe she will finally have to tell her parents in a situation similar to gang of secrets.

6) Princesse Syren/Sleeping Syren

Ondine yayyyy! Yay! Ondine. Possibly a Kimdine episode to redeem Kim after they ruined his character for no reason and everyone got really mad because it didn’t even make sense. Remember when the instas were still a thing Alya had a post like “hanging out at the pool! Ondine is so awesome idk what she sees in Kim” or something. Yeah. How’d he pull a baddie like her if he’s been acting the way they’ve been showing him to act? Makes no cents luv. I’m dying to see more of their relationship, more of her, and some repair of what they’ve done to Kim.

It sounds like they might be doing some kind of sleeping beauty retelling? Idk how that would make Syren a threat if she’s asleep the whole time, but maybe she’ll still be doing the whole flooding the city with tears thing while she’s sleeping.

I also really hope Ondine will be attending their school now. I want to see her interact with other characters and become more relevant. Please give The People (me) what they want (official Ondine street clothes design). Also they’ve been introducing too many lamely designed girl characters with average heights and athletic-skinny body types. We need the 6ft swole girl to balance them out.

7) El Toro de Piedra

This name is so Ivan-coded that I’m tempted to just say that it’s not him, but why would they make an intentionally misleading Ivan clone. The name is concerning because it sounds like a mix of stoneheart and his hero persona. That makes me think maybe he’ll get akumatized AS Minotaurox. His arc has been about how he’s scared to accidentally harm others because being the first akuma bothered him so deeply. If he’s in a situation where he has to act tough or use force as a hero, he might become upset, worrying that he’s going overboard. I can see him cracking if his fight against an akuma ends up getting a civilian hurt in the crossfire or with someone being scared of him afterwards. Having his regular/akuma and hero forms mix together could compromise his identity.

Also I guess he’s Hispanic? *sonic voice* I didn’t know that. I remember a long while ago they said in an interview to look forward to Ivan lore which is one of the things I am most excited for this season. He is probably THE most underrated character in the show and most overdue for development.

8) Vampigami

Guys I hate to say it. I really hate to say it. My heart wants this to be vampire Kagami sooooo bad but my brain says we aren’t allowed to have nice things. I already suggested a Kagami akuma earlier, and she can totally get akumatized several times a season again because her mom hates her, but I’m not ready to be disappointed like this. I want her to become a badass evil vampire and acquire a Ben 10 arsenal of villain forms, but Vampigami is probably gonna be some stupid shit like Optigami except it looks like a bat instead of a butterfly this time.

I really don’t know what to seriously expect. I can’t imagine vamp referring to anything other than vampire, although it can also mean patching/editing like the word revamp. Gami has only been used in a senti name before to mean oragami. Idk man vampire Kagami is so engrained in my mind that I can’t come up with anything else. Like to charge reblog to cast. Let’s manifest that the writers have finally tuned in to what the people want.

9) Monsieur/Mister Agreste

This has got to be the episode that introduces Adrien’s grandparents, right? Meaning his grandpa is gonna be Gabriel’s dad and the title could stand for three generations of Mr. Agrestes. I’m surprised we haven’t heard much about them yet, but since Gabriel’s dead, it makes sense they’d come around to get his affairs in order or attend the funeral etc etc.

We got a big movie about Emilie’s history and her noble family, but all we know about the Agrestes is that they weren’t rich, and they sold fries. But there’s the weird part: wouldn’t Gabriel’s parents be the Grassettes? How much do they know about his life after he moved out? This episode might show us more about where it all went wrong for the Gabriel of this timeline. Maybe his dad will get akumatized because Gabriel abandoned their family, and he’ll become Mr. Agreste instead of Mr. Grassette to try to fit himself back into Gabriel’s fake narrative. He’ll turn into a rich asshole old guy because he thinks that’s the type of dad Gabriel would have wanted instead of his real self. Dang that’s sad.

10) Le Chateau Noir/The Dark Castle

My first reaction was Chat Noir, but I saw someone say Darkblade which makes so much more sense. I mean Chat Noir getting akumatized is an avengers-level threat, and last time it happened he blew up like everything, plus the episode was pretty late into the season.

Darkblade fits pretty well with the castle thing since he’s a knight. He lost yet another mayoral election, unable to even blame it on corruption this time. On top of it all, the new, fairly elected mayor is his old coworker from school who also didn’t have much political experience. Ouch.

11) Revelator

I’m getting Reverser from the name but only vaguely. This sounds like a similar type of villain to Gold Record who forces people to reveal something about themselves. Maybe this episode will go into how suddenly having secret identities is affecting the other characters’ relationships like Gang of Secrets again or Truth/Lies. If the akuma’s power has to do with revealing secrets, someone may get their identity exposed on accident like in Wishmaker. By that I mean a reveal between characters other than the akuma and the secret they want to find out.

12) Psyconductrice/Wreckless Driver

My first thought here was Max’s mom because she’s a train engineer, but the name seems to imply cars specifically. Totally unrelated, but remember that one poll on here about who’s the hottest MILF in miraculous, and Claudie Kante was in dead last by a lot, even way behind Audrey with her fuckass Anna Wintour bob and horrible child abusing bitter personality? Yeah you all have horrible taste. Democracy is dead and I hope everyone is happy being so goddamn ignorant and wrong. /hj.

On the topic of moms this could still be someone’s mom. I’ve brought up the pattern before: many moms are associated with a mode of transportation that are connected to their villain form. Car: Tomoe, boat: Anarka, train: Claudie, motorcycle: Gina. We could get a bus driver mom, or a trucker or taxi or racecar driver. Imagine. I’ve been saying we need a pilot mom.

Even if this isn’t anyone’s mom, it might be a new character. Idk who else it could be of existing characters.

13) Yaksi Gozen

This bitch again. Boo. I mean she IS super badass actually, but can we comically pull her offstage with a long hooked cane and let someone else have the screentime? I gotta say I am interested in her as a major villain but. Her akuma was cool the first two times and it’s time to calm down.

Clearly there’s something new about her this time. When looking up what yaksi means, it brings up yakshi, a type of nature spirit, but nothing that actually matches with “yaksi”. Maybe she’ll run a greenwashing campaign with her company? That reminds me of Mega Leech and how she wasn’t held accountable for her involvement in that scenario. If she comes under fire, she might get herself akumatized on purpose Collector-style to save face. Does anyone know if yaksi means something else? I’m not convinced it’s supposed to be yakshi without the h.

14) Couchorak/Grendiaper

Gigantitan vibes, possibly a powered-up version of him. When Hawkmoth first akumatized the baby, it was by mistake, and he ended up regretting it because he was hard to control and useless to his cause. Would Lila akumatize a baby on purpose, or is this an accident too? Since there’s a time skip, baby August would be a year older as well, so he’d actually be a toddler now, which might make him less unpredictable.

A shot in the dark I’m gonna make is that this might be Ivan’s younger sister. We know he has one, and while we don’t know her age, it sounds like she’s probably a toddler. We also know that he’s interested in childcare as a career. If I had to guess, I’d say he probably takes care of her often, which might be what gave him the idea. If she gets akumatized, it would be a great setup for his superhero focus episode.

15) La Redresseuse/The Ruler

My hottest take on this whole post is that this one is Mendeleev. Isn’t she the principal now or something? Idk but she’s a strict teacher who needs order, so I think the name matches her because 1: rulers are school supplies, especially for a science teacher who needs everything to be measured exactly, 2: ruler meaning leader with a totalitarian connotation, 3: the French title means straightener which connects to disciplining students or controlling how the school is run.

I think she’ll get akumatized because her students lack respect for her, and her strictness makes them dislike her which actually hurts her feelings as seen in the NY special. She might have a hard time adjusting to this new school system and her new role, not seeing the same positive relationships Bustier and Damocles held with the kids. She’ll go way overboard and turn into an evil school-themed dictator to try and regain control, but then learn her own lesson.

16) Noe

This is most likely a new character or something, but I love the idea that it’s just like, evil Zoe. Zoen’t. Noe.

OR imagine if it’s a more powerful version of Nino’s brother because it’s Noel but without the L, meaning this time, he won’t be taking the L. Coincidence? I think not. He is Lila’s pawn or whatever after all.

In all seriousness I have no idea what this is and the name could mean a lot of things, so I’m gonna just go with a completely new character.

17) La Fee De Beaux Reves/A Fairy Good Night

This is so Pigella energy. Not Rose, Pigella. In Jubilation, we saw how terrifying her power is when used for evil, trapping people in their own daydreams. Maybe she’ll struggle with nightmares or sleep problems and turn into an akuma that forces everyone to get stuck in imagined utopian illusions so they can “rest”. This idea is kind of the opposite of Sandboy and Nightormentor. I’d love to see more of her power and how it can be used for both good and evil, especially since a lot of people seem to think it’s useless or too situational.

18) Les Crassetastrophes/The Dirtifiers

This might be the little kids in another obligatory babysitting episode. The villain name is plural, so it could be a comic relief moment where the kids get mad because they don’t want to clean up or something silly. Otherwise maybe this is another pollution situation? I’m leaning more towards children, though. Another possibility is that we might be getting our first animal akumas.

19) Riginarazione

So I’m pretty set on this being Lila herself. Italian words? Check. Villain name having “queen” (rigina) in it because they can’t be too creative? Check. I’m guessing the pun is supposed to be regeneration rather than “queen ration” so maybe she’s gonna make herself some sort of nearly invincible self-healing villain.

20) Renverse-cœurs/Heartfixer

This sounds like that monstrosity Andre and Audrey turned into. Heart Hunter. I had to Google the name because I erased it from my mind. Out of all the old villains, I’m surprised this is one they’d choose to revamp since it was such a jumpscare, but I can see how they’d want to revisit it in the context of the Bourgeois’s messed up relationship since they were more of a temporary joke villain the first time. Maybe we’ll get some backstory on Chloe and Zoe as kids and who this Lee guy is who’s supposed to be Zoe’s American Dad (goooood morning, USA!). Based on the akuma name… maybe they’re gonna get less divorced. Wouldn’t that be a shocker? Audrey character development? Or maybe they’ll feel the need to keep it together for the kids.

21) Les Titans Chaines/The Chained Titans

I have no idea but it sounds awesome. Clearly more than one person. My first thought was s5 finale energy with the miraculized, like a whole mob of people sharing the same negative emotions. The metal vibes make me think maybe Couffaine family just because they’re so dramatic, and Jagged was a titan in the music industry who didn’t want to feel chained down? Kind of a stretch perhaps. Of course, it could be something new.

22) Lady Chaos

I’m saying Marinette akuma idc. I know people have been making this prediction for the past couple seasons and the writers were saying no but. Episode 22 is the one where shit goes down. Now that Bunnyx is active full time and there’s an entire team of other superheroes, there’s finally a chance to beat her if she does turn evil. I’m guessing it’s gonna be a bad timeline one like the Adrien akumas.

My concern with this type of ep is that they’d Mary Sue her and be like “her power levels are so high that nobody stands a chance against her, the best ladybug ever” even with like 20 heroes fighting her. I don’t think it’d be too bad though, because thinking about Chat Blanc, if she instantly blows up the whole world and the goal is just to undo that timeline, it’d probably be about equivalent.

23) Tristanansi

Using triste in two of the French akuma names is uh… we couldn’t come up with anything more creative? Anyway obv Nora so this could once again be a Nino episode like the first, but it could also (more likely imo) be an Alya one. Nora has a fiery personality and strong opinions so maybe Lila could’ve taken advantage of that to manipulate her kind of like what happened with Jalil. We were briefly introduced to a character who is her friend or boyfriend last season, and he may be more relevant this time, like maybe they have a fight. Similar to Sentibubbler, maybe Lila is targeting Alya’s family to try and get information out of her or steal the fox miraculous.

24) La Reine de Frayeurville/Queen of the Dreadzone

Other people have been saying this could be a Halloween special but… I want to say this might be a powered up Horrificator. This might be one of those episodes where they make it more lighthearted before the finale, and we haven’t seen her act on her own since s1 which is like the whole point of her akuma. She isn’t effective at all in groups and everyone’s been kinda desensitized to what’s supposed to be scary about her. Maybe they’re bringing her back scarier. Mylene has come far with her phobias, so they’d need something to really scare her.

I remember something about a proposed Halloween special taking place in the catacombs, which is coincidentally where Lila’s lair is. There might be a connection where the gang figures out she’s there, and something spooky goes wrong while investigating. The Paris catacombs are an understandable place to get scared in and a great setting for horror.

^^^ Ok I don’t know what specifically to say about the finale except that they’re probably gonna fight self-akumatized Lila since they tend to be kind of unpredictable.

What I do want to do is bring everything together and point out that Lila knows the identities of like half the heroes from the beginning because she stole Nathalie’s iPad or whatever happened. In Miracle Queen: Alya, Nino, Luka, Kagami, Kim, and Max had their identities revealed, which was relevant again in Optigami. Alix didn’t even try to keep a secret. Lila can easily connect that five of these people are her former classmates and all of them are friends, so she must have figured out that the rest of the heroes are also from their group. In the London special, it didn’t take a lot of hard work to uncover Marinette’s identity. She also targeted Kagami last season on a personal level. Side note, I have no clue if she knows Felix is Argos or not. That point is unclear to me, but I’m gonna assume she does since Gabriel knew.

We have Marinette, Adrien, Juleka, Rose, Mylene, Ivan, Zoe, Marc, Nath, and Sabrina left in the safe zone. I predicted most of these characters will get akumatized, and I believe Lila will be targeting them on an individual level under the suspicion that they’re on the team. It’s likely that she will even expose some if not a lot of them. In fact, she might have gone after Ondine as a red herring because she’s friends with them and King Monkey’s gf. From her perspective, Marinette could be one of the superheroes just as easily as anyone else could.

I’m not too worried about Adrien since he’s been the best at staying secretive, and Lila might not even suspect him because of the idealized yet untrue preconceived notions she has about him.

She may also be going down the list to see who does and doesn’t show up to each fight, making ladybug feel the need to call the minimum number of people to help her, which would solve the narrative problem of “why can’t ladybug sic the whole team on every akuma”. Discounting any Mirage tricks, having a certain hero help fight an akuma would tell Lila that the akuma is for sure not that hero. And obviously if every hero except one shows up that’s uh… suspicious.

Something very interesting is that out of all these characters, the episode I predicted to focus on Sabrina is one where the akuma is not her. Perhaps Lila will overlook her because she only recently made new friends, thinking she’d never be trusted with a miraculous. This same mistake of underestimating Sabrina is what led to her downfall the first time, so it’d be poetic if Sabrina managed to play the spy twice.

I did not predict any of these episodes to potentially be a Juleka akuma, but you know this girl will never in her life catch a break, especially with the rest of the pattern I’ve laid out above. Which episode do you think is secretly gonna be Reflekta? I guarantee you it’s one of them.

As a final note, I think Nathalie will be instrumental in helping the team identify Lila as the villain. They’re very unlikely to defeat her this season for good, but Nathalie knew about Lila’s little internship with Gabriel, and she was the one who originally had all the grimoire pages and Optigami identity data digitalized. She may recognize that information has been stolen or connect that Lila may have had the opportunity to physically take the butterfly miraculous by entering the lair. She’s in a unique spot because she’s the only one who knows this much about Lila’s villain plans, but also knows Ladybug’s identity now. I’m interested to see her role as a redeemed ally to the team.

tips for entering the new semester!

since i chose to take courses in my summer semester that are usually half the length of regular courses, i definitely know that i have to be prepared to lock-in so i can pass with an A+. these are just the steps/tips that i have taken that may help anyone who is also in my position :)

clean your area make sure to clean your area; not just your room, but also your bathroom, closet, desk, etc. a clean space = a clean & focused mind! i have personally been making sure to prioritize keeping my area clean because other than the fact i moved two moths ago, i also find that when my living space is messy, so is my mind. i focus 100x better when my area is clean compared to when it’s messy; i tend to get distracted and want to clean mid-study session haha.

create a schedule having a set schedule, not only for studying, but also for just daily tasks is super duper important when starting a new semester. since my classes are online & have flexible times, i just scheduled that i’ll work on that subject for about an hour and a half every day (minus the weekends). i recommend planning your day around your fixed classes then adding what else is important. example: if i only have one fixed class that is set for 8-9:45AM every Monday & Wednesday, then i will plan my day around that class & make sure i add time for studying for my other classes. here is an example of my schedule! i planned all 3 of my classes with some empty space for either some time with friends, freetime, some time to focus on my hobbies, etc.

make sure you have the supplies needed make sure you have at least a big enough notebook & writing utensils (or a good notetaking app on your ipad; i use goodnotes but i’ve heard that notability is good too!), your textbooks, and anything else required for certain classes. some classes with labs or any other science-based class most likely has a few other needed supplies. for example my chemistry classes required me to get safety glasses & a lab coat, which she told us on the first day of lab, so make sure you have everything you need prior to at least the second class!

organize your electronics some things i’ve done is going through both my phone & ipad and deleting unnecessary apps as well as adding widgets that will either motivate me or help me stay organized (calendar widget, canvas widget, etc). i have also been going through my social medias & unfollowing people who don’t post anything that would motivate me or anything that i’m not interested in, as well as un-liking and un-saving posts that i don’t need anymore/don’t have interest in anymore. some other things you could do is changing your wallpaper to something motivating or changing it to match your aesthetic better, deleting photos or contacts you don’t need, clear tabs, wiping down your electronics at least once a week, and update your apps!

setting realistic goals the way that i view having realistic goals is to make sure that you aren’t setting unrealistic goals that may make you think negatively about yourself or your abilities. for example, if i don’t study but expect to get at least a 90% on an exam, but then i get a 60%, not meeting that high goal of mine may make me think that i’m stupid or i don’t have the abilities to perform well in that subject. my main goals for this summer semester is to have at least a 3.5 GPA & complete any extra credit work that is offered, but a more specific goal i have for mainly psychology & ASL is to actually retain the information to make sure i am understanding.

getting rest getting rest is a very very veryyyy important thing to prioritize especially if you’re a very active student that studies even a couple hours a day. getting good sleep can help you get less sick less often, reduce stress, and even improve your attention & memory (source). some tips to help fall asleep, and stay asleep, include getting some exercise, going outside for at least 30 minutes a day, avoid electronics for around an hour before your actual bedtime, and sticking to a sleep schedule (sleeping & waking up at the same time everyday). i usually have a hard time sleeping mainly because i get very hot in my sleep, which causes me to wake up feeling sick, but a way that i’ve been managing this is to make sure i’m wearing breathable clothes, having a thin blanket to sleep with, and drinking a bunch of water which can actually help regulate body temperature.

some other general tips that may help - finding out what study method helps for you. some popular ones are active recall, feynman, active recall/blurting, chunking, spaced repetition, pomodoro, and mock test/exam. if anyone wants a more detailed post on these techniques lmk! - finding a place to study. some common places are a cafe, a school library, or even your own bedroom; just make sure to eliminate distractions. - alwayyyyys check your emails, canvas inbox, or whatever platform your prof uses to communicate. checking these things will help with staying updated with any announcements, upcoming assignments, or anything else that needed to be communicated with the class. - seeking academic help. if your school offers a writing center or any other tutors, take advantage of that resource!! personally, i haven’t been to my school’s writing center, but i know others who have greatly benefited from seeking that help. - go. to. your. classes. i cannnnoooottttt stress this enough. missing one class will just start a snowball effect where it goes from missing once, to twice, to then missing three classes and therefore missing a ton of important info. the only negative of actually getting up & going to your classes is getting ready and actually getting moving. it is so much more worth it to attend your classes then to miss a ton of info. - get a planner. as someone who’s been using a planner since middle school, it helps so much with keeping assignments & important events organized & remembered. - work on what assignment is due first/soonest. literally do not work on that small 250 word assignment that isn’t due until the end of next week; do the reading that is due on monday, do that 1500 word assignment that is due on tuesday. do the stuff that’ll take the longest/that is due the soonest. a way i recommend to make sure you’re doing this is to double and triple check to make sure that you’re prioritizing the correct assignments over the others.

alright y'all. now that babbity kate's second samantha video is up (and you should go watch it if you haven't, it's delightful!), let's talk about the date of gard and cornelia’s wedding and its possible narrative implications. this is a very long post, so we're going to jump below the cut to do so.

to catch everyone up to speed, on march 19, babbity kate posted a preview of part of this video on her patreon, whereupon i learned that she'd also had the thought that one version of gard and cornelia's wedding timeline makes it seems like they moved up the date of the wedding, which makes one automatically think that there was a baby. if you don't feel like clicking the link, the important thing to know is that i'd had a draft as of march 8 for a meta post wondering if the wedding timeline for gard and cornelia was because of a baby that they then lost.

back when i posted that, @emilybennettstan had asked if i could actually explain what this all was about, so let's finally give a recap about what babbity kate was explaining now that the video is public, and then talk about my thoughts on the narrative of it all.

if you are only very vaguely familiar with the samantha books, it is important to note that the series seems completely incapable of keeping canon intact. maybe that's a little harsh, but the series often has a details out of step with one another, such as the fact that bridget and jenny cycle through every hair color imaginable, the word-of-god date for nellie's birthday doesn't make the most sense, and who even knows when samantha's grandfather dies.

the date of gard and cornelia's wedding is another one of these instances, and babbity kate does a great job of getting into it (seriously, i'll still recap her thoughts, but you should also go watch the video starting at 1:20:40). when gard and cornelia get engaged at christmas, they tell samantha and grandmary when they are thinking about having the wedding--and the date which they say varies from edition to edition (and yes, we do actually have the short story with the wedding, but that was published way after the main series, so ignore that for now). the important thing to remember here is that they always are married by happy birthday, samantha!, which takes place in late may. and yet, there's one version of the date that they announce at christmas where they say that they are going to have a june wedding, which means that by the time the next book rolls around, it makes it look like they have moved up the wedding.

i was aware of the date changing around (hence the draft post), but babbity was clever enough to look at when ag printed what dates. as it turned out, the first edition had gard and cornelia saying that they would have a march wedding. for some goddamn reason, the next printing changed this to them saying that they'll have a june wedding DESPITE the established timeline. this mistake is then corrected in another printing with them saying they'll have a spring wedding (which does work fine with that established timeline), but that still leaves this one bizarre instance of ag deliberately changing the books to make it seem like gard and cornelia moved up their wedding from what they were planning at christmas.

as babbity then goes on to say (and the actual thing i wanted to talk about when i made the draft), this makes one automatically think that, for the mucked-up timeline, it is because of a baby. when you hear that a wedding's been moved up, especially in the era of the samantha books, you think baby. unfortunately, the implications of ag messing up their own timeline then further go on to spiral out of control, because then cornelia doesn't have a baby for over another year.

so, to recap, ag messed up so bad that they created a divergent timeline where the implications, as an adult looking at the series, seem to be that aunt cornelia has had a miscarriage.

let's also be super clear: babbity doesn't pose this theory because she likes or agrees with it, but because it's a logical train of thought to go down with the june wedding timeline. i would very much agree with this--again, i started drafting a post about this same situation with a lost baby because of this inconsistency in the timeline--but i do still think there's some narrative implications to think about here. like it or not, one of the timelines that ag created is this one, so now that i've recapped babbity's incredible research into how this timeline happened, i'm want to go further down this rabbit hole.

for the sake of the rest of this post, we're going to be looking at the june wedding timeline as if it were more canon than it actually is (because the fandom does correctly seem to mostly treat it like the mistake it is, but i'm here to overanalyze everything, so you're getting what you signed up for). as a reminder, an overarching theme of samantha's stories is building a family after loss. now, depending on what kind of person you are, the idea of a lost baby can make this narrative even more compelling, or it can really detract from the progression and characters of the series.

on the more compelling side, if gard and cornelia lost a baby somewhere in the first half of 1905, it gives a bit more weight to how readily they build a family with samantha and the o'malley girls. they are grieving the loss of what they thought would be the start of their new family and, given the opportunity to have a family through adoption, they jump on it. much like the how samantha's healing process culminates with her getting the parental figures and siblings she's always been dreaming of, this moment of adoption can become more significant for gard and cornelia if you work with the idea that they, too, have now suffered a loss as expectant parents, and are still choosing to heal and rebuild from that.

but this can also just be a total bummer, and i think the narrative also supports that. in particular, gard has been going through it for years with the loss of his sister and the fact that he then is forced to step into a more parental role with sam than he maybe would've if he had just gotten to be her uncle. and now he's finally getting married! he's open to love and creating a relationship and they're off on a lovely honeymoon and... oh wait, the child they thought that they'd have is no longer going to happen.

and so, this timeline seems like it can also cut into the overarching development of gard's life in particular towards happiness, which he is pretty firmly on by the stage in which a miscarriage would happen. furthermore, it also could detract from his and cornelia's strength of character by giving them an underlying personal motive for adopting all the girls, instead of just them wanting to do what's right and being in a stage of life where they can finally do that. it also complicates the grief expressed in the books--all the focus has been on lydia and her husband, despite the fact that grandfather edwards also died (potentially) fairly recently. why add another loss into the mix?

and… yeah, i think that’s my full exploration of how one editorial/printing error can create unintended implications in the narrative! hopefully more people than me find this interesting:) and if any of this is unclear, feel free to pop into the replies or my dms. oh, and go watch babbity kate's video--it'll be worth your time, i promise!
