things to pay attention to when observing a captive animal
re: lrb i figured i might as well just stick these in its own post since this is, in fact, one of the big animal video websites.
i know that most people do not have access to wild animals on the reg and i know that most people have not had continuing education about the care of captive wild animals. fwiw, neither do i! but over the years i have watched enough documentaries and read up on enough failed animal "sanctuaries" to have gathered a lot of tips. so here are some easy things anyone can keep an eye out for!
1. is the animal's enclosure relatively clean or are there signs of accumulated filth? some wear & tear is expected but you shouldn't see what looks like multiple days of shit, piss, food scraps, etc. an animal's enclosure should be cleaned every day.
2. can you see obvious access to water sources and does that water look clean? if you don't see clean-looking & full buckets, troughs, or a natural source of running water, you should question whether that animal has anything to drink.
3. is the animal left alone when it walks away or does the caretaker continue to follow and bother it? perhaps understandable if something medical needs to take place, but if it's just for "fun" or something that doesn't seem totally necessary, that's a bad sign. an animal should be free to walk away from something pestering it.
4. if outside, is there shelter from the elements? something like a run-in shed, open barn, thicket of trees, natural overhang etc. animals need sources of shade to protect themselves from sun exposure and heat.
5. can you see enrichment toys or materials? especially true for smaller zoos where animals can't roam much. you want to see evidence that there's an effort to provide mental stimulation to the animal.
6. is the animal displaying repetitive behaviors like pacing or walking in small circles? because that's bad! it could indicate anything from anxiety to psychosis.
7. if you search for pics of the animal in the wild does its body shape approximate examples you find? it should. if the animal is much thinner, it could indicate starvation. if it's much rounder, it could indicate that although it's being fed, it's not being fed an appropriate diet. (think of those captive tigers with bellies that almost touch the floor, for example)
8. is the animal entirely alone or do you see other animals with it? most animals want some form of companionship. of course some animals are kept solitary for safety reasons or maybe they're loners in the wild. but most animals benefit from social interaction with other animals.
9. if in a zoo, does the animal have a place it can retreat from the public? it should!
10. does the animal display aggressive behaviors like charging its caretakers? it could indicate the animal has been traumatized or abused in some way.
11. in good zoos, the keepers will physically handle an animal as little as possible. so if you see the animal being manhandled a lot, that's a bad sign.
if you see these signs, you can try to find mechanisms that let you report the facility to local animal welfare agencies. and you can also not engage/boost that content and instead go engage with a reputable sanctuary or conservation-forward zoo instead :)
also please keep in mind that every time a captive wild animal goes viral, the exotic pet trade booms—and it's completely despicable. wild animals should not be pets. end of. if anyone else has other tips to add, please feel free!

Is it ethical to resurrect fossil pokemon?
The answer to that is a solid: It depends.
For the most part, I would argue that yes, it's fine to take a fossil to a lab. The biggest worry most people have is that "if it gets out, what about the eco-system?" but in truth, the fossil pokemon is the one most in trouble for the simple fact that.
Well.
The eco system has moved on and the old niche is filled by pokemon with millions of years of natural selection against the resurrected one. For an example, lets look at lileep. Back in its time period, where the diversity of the eco-systems was still a new thing, lileep colonies stretched for miles. They were the dominant life form. You can't stub your toe in Hoenn without turning over a lileep fossil. Because they were the first really successful grass type, the ocean beds were theirs. Nowadays, though, the sea floors they used to rule are crowded with corsola, sea weed, kelp, shellder beds, etc. There's no room for the fairly basic lileep to get a foot hold.
Sometimes even the basic environment itself is an issue. Anorith struggle in modern oceans due to changes to the ocean such as pH and salinity.
One of the few exceptions to this is omanyte, which is becoming quite prevalent. However, a number of fairly smart water type pokemon are working out how to get into that tough shell to get the meat inside, and so its likely the eco-system may eventually resettle once its position on the food chain is established. Until then, omanyte meat is very slowly picking up as a delicacy. (Though frankly, you'd have a better time eating an old boot.)
Another reason they pose little threat to the eco system: most of their food no longer exists naturally. Aurorus, for instance, can just barely hold its own against rivals like tropius, but their natural diet of large cycads and ferns are hard to find or just plain extinct. Combined with the warmer temperatures of today, and a large pokemon that could have been destructive of the eco-system is rendered incapable of doing so.
However, these pokemon often thrive in human care, as we can use science to make supplements that fill in the nutritional gaps and provide care and enrichment to help them enjoy their new life. A well loved and looked after fossil pokemon is a fascinating window into a past so different it may as well be another world.
However, there is one more thing I must address.
"Professor" Cara Liss is a hack who got her PhD from the back of a cereal box.
Those poor pokemon she resurrects are travesties of science. Though it is our responsibility to provide the current specimens living today with the medical care they deserve, it is DEEPLY morally wrong to create more of them. A dracovish might have a good reputation as a battler but it can barely function without a diet that is almost half medication by volume (I exaggerate, but only slightly).
Fossil pokemon do need some thought, as there are extra elements to their care, but if you want to bring your lucky fossil feather back from the dead as an arceops, go forth and do so if you think you're ready.
Just don't give it to that fraud in Galar.

how do you reconcile being a feminist, single, and a high-value woman? maybe I'm misunderstanding the concept but I always thought HVW and hypergamy were all very centered on seeking a male partner.
Hi love! Great question. I think your curiosity offers a great opportunity to dive a bit more into my personal views and philosophy.
I believe that the goal of feminism is to protect all women and provide them legal protection, structural resources, and social power to live equitably in society. In my eyes, a high-value woman is one who is unapologetically self-respecting and sets her life up in a way to allows her to work towards goals that meet her needs in all areas of life.
Hypergamy, by its modern definition, is the idea that women "date up" to intertwine their sexual relationships with men to those who offer more or equally high social, financial, or sexual capital to them. The traditional idea of hypergamy was exclusively referred to as "marrying up" as marriage was the only way women could achieve most resources (like a bank account, credit card, housing, and certain medical care – it's so terrifying, honestly).
In the latter case, hypergamy is nearly synonymous with centralizing men. Before women gained certain freedoms (in the U.S. this was mostly in the 1960-70s), centralizing men was a survival mechanism, not a preference or act of self-imposed oppression.
I believe in the modern world where women can have their own bank accounts, careers, and access to birth control (the latter one is an anxiety-inducing topic at this point in time, ugh), women are given the choice to be hypergamous either while centralizing or decentralizing men.
I believe that you can uphold hypergamous standards in your dating life without centralizing men in your life. For me, personally, my relationship or dating status has no bearing on how happy or successful I am in my life. No man (or lack of one in my life) will ever determine my self-worth or reflect my progress in life. My metrics of fulfillment and accomplishment stem from thriving in my professional life, staying in good health, practicing consistently healthy habits (WFPB diet, regular exercise, mental health hygiene, sexual wellness, mindfulness, self-care, etc.), and maintaining nourishing friendships. Dating and my interactions with men (in non-platonic ways) are fun ways I enrich my life, so I believe this mentality embodies the modern – albeit hyper-progressive – definition of hypergamy. Remaining single allows me to enjoy all of the ways men can uplevel my life – socially, financially (to the degree some nighttime activities, such as dinners, drinks, car services, club fees, etc. are paid for – no sugaring activities or anything), and sexually without the aspects of dating men that would contradict my sense of self-respect or autonomy. I'm not personally designed to be a man's therapist or feel like I should have to include a man's needs in all of my life or day-to-day decisions because we're sexually involved with each other. I have a strict vetting process regarding who I will entertain in my dating/sexual life to ensure they're adding value to my life and there's mutual compatibility considering the type of arrangement we're both seeking.
Personally, I believe the only way to maintain equity in dating is to remain single, which allows me to meet all of my other standards in life. I will never sacrifice my life goals for a man, but I do not believe that means you have to approach dating or sexual relationships from a black-and-white perspective. However, if I'm going to date men (which can be a headache for certain), I believe they need to enrich my life in some way – whether that's interesting conversations, gaining business acumen, social relationships, fun sexual experiences, or just learning about different cultures/world perspectives.
From my observations, women who use hypergamy as an excuse to centralize their life or aspirations around a man are glamorizing regressive/oppressive ideologies (like submitting to a partner or relying on men financially) as a last attempt to uphold the patriarchy as women wake up to the fact that having to do all of society's emotional labor plus having to contort ourselves in a world designed for men, namely in our professional lives, is not the truest form of feminism out there (not to mention it's lack of intersectionality, but that's a whole other rant lol). I don't use the "hypergamy" tag on my posts anymore for this reason, though. I believe that many people are conflating the textbook concept of hypergamy with regressive political agendas, which I will never promote let alone subscribe to.
This is all just my take, so I hope it all makes sense and resonates with some members of this amazing community. Every woman should figure out what approaches to all of these matters would make her the most genuinely happy and fulfilled regardless of society's expectations or cultural norms.

Just curious, how do you find time to care adequately for 50+ animals? Not insinuating you’re not caring for them correctly or anything. I understand that reptiles and rodents don’t need much if any 1on1 enrichment time with you, and some reptiles have infrequent feedings. But that’s gotta be at least like 30 tanks/cages to maintain, do you ever get free time between work and pets/fosters??
Short answer is I don’t get very much free time and I’m in hell
Long answer is a lot of spreadsheets and to do lists and frustration and I am often a day or two behind on at least one thing that isn’t super time sensitive. Especially right now with the foster rats getting medicated 2x a day.
My current routine is: Wake up, medicate rats, check everyone’s water sources, go to work.
After work if I have any intakes scheduled I do those- I am currently at capacity at my home but I still pick up new intakes and deliver them to their foster homes. Then I go home, feed the rodents, feed the reptiles if needed, water enclosures as needed, check water sources again, medicate the rats.
I give the small rodents (gerbils, hams, and mice) enough food for the week every Sunday so only the rats get fed on a daily schedule but I do give treats, fruits and vegetables, etc a few times throughout the week. I also do visual checks on everyone who is out and about and dig around for anyone I haven’t seen in a few days.
Right now the baby rats get their cages cleaned 2-3x a week because they’re so messy but the adults get cleaned 1x a week. My mice get cleaned 1x a week. Gerbils every other week and hamsters 1x a month and really only their pee spots. I spot clean throughout the week, this just refers to major cage cleans (usually between 1/4 and 1/3 of the bedding)
My permanent rats are on the Shunamite Diet so I meal prep their fresh meals every 2-3 weeks and make enough to last me for a while. I freeze whatever won’t be used within the week. They get fresh meals 2x a week and dry meals the rest of the week. The fosters are on Oxbow and Science Selective pellets.
Niobe (ball python) gets fed 1x a month, Ricearoni (hoggie) 1x a week. Freak, Meryt, and Lucky (pacman frog, axolotl, and leopard gecko) get fed 2-3x a week. The house geckos get fed 3-4x a week and luckily my girlfriend works at a pet store so usually she just brings me home feeders and I drop them in that day.
Most days it isn’t all that much maintenance but it is a LOT of different little things that all add up. For things I know I need to do but feel no motivation for, I’ll often make an instagram reel about it to basically force myself into doing it- same reason why I post my to do lists on here and check them off where people can see.
And I am very lucky that my friends & partner are understanding of the fact that sometimes I have to make last minute changes to plans because the pets need something that I can’t put off and oftentimes are happy to just accompany me on errands and chat while I clean cages instead of like, going out.

listen. cringe is dead and staying dead, but i'm still going to make some disclaimers. the multiverse is an already established/accepted thing, and is a running theme in my AUs. in fact that's kind of the whole point of them: that the multiverse exists, and its worlds/people are there to play with. second chance au exists literally just to enrich my enclosure and spoil the absolute hell out of shadow. ok? good, ok, listen
some truths in the context of second chance au:
shadow is the equivalent of an adopted child
he does not have the context of the events of his namesake game
he does not have access to his own medical/creation records on account of not being able to revisit his (or any adjacent) timeline/world. the most he knows is what gerald told him, which is effectively just "you were made (to be perfect)" (there's nuance to this fact but don't worry about it for the sake of the argument here)
this is the multiverse, remember, where several iterations of shadow already exist, and at least two of his timelines have already overlapped/split off from the other. so it stands to reason that there are other iterations of the black arms, right?
eclipse is a literal child soldier, made in a way mirroring shadow, who was mistreated in nearly the same way, and deserved better
so now let's imagine an alternate take on the black arms, where:
their diets still consist largely of meat, but they don't prey on sapient species. like, maybe they did in the past, but realized hey that kind of sucks, we should maybe not do that to things we can literally communicate with (still need to survive, though)
the paternal qualities eclipse displays is now species-wide; a majority of them are extremely protective and caring of their young. they're an incredibly social species who look out for one another. think of them as rats in that regard
while they still share an at-will hivemind, they are not a homogenous species and in fact have as much of a physical/class diversity as shown in canon. black doom and black death share one such particular class, for example, rather than black death being intentionally made to replace doom in the event of his demise. this particular class is one of "royalty", in that if the current leader dies, the next one in line takes their place
the role that black doom holds is more of a title, in that upon his demise, whoever takes his place also gradually inherits his personality/values/takes on his appearance/etc. this ensures that the person in power maintains a consistent mindset, that overthrowing the previous leader is effectively pointless, and that the concept of "black doom" always exists at some capacity, even if the "original" has long since passed
regardless of generation of black doom they're on, the guy is comparatively peaceful and practical. he's not a doormat, but he's also not going to steamroll someone/a whole species just to get what he wants. he'll attempt to find a compromise if possible (and if not, then too bad. i said he's practical, not perfect. maybe you can see where shadow gets it from) (there definitely exists a timeline where, in the context of this alternate take, he provided his DNA for shadow's creation because he was intrigued by humanity in general and wanted to see them prosper. the deal would have been "give me the chaos emeralds in 50 years because the power source we're using for the comet will be depleted by then". but predicted gerald would betray him, so they just mutually planned to destroy each other)
their names come from an old tradition of naming themselves/their young after morbid or upsetting things in attempt to ward off said things. even if they don't have this superstition anymore, they still tend to maintain the tradition
they have settled in very small pockets across multiple worlds and such, opening namely restaurants and other shops. they like to interact with other cultures and share their own, but will meet wayward other black arms/descendants/etc in particular with open arms and maybe a little too much enthusiasm
tldr i think shadow should get to meet a version of his biological father (or the closest approximation) who isn't batshit murderous, because he needs a dependable (and unequivocally caring) parental figure in his life who can help teach him things about himself not even gerald would have known, and that eclipse should get a second chance and get to be a normal kid/have a family again alright thanks for listening bye

Ah, the Zorua line. An interesting one. Just as a note, I generally write these for trainers, but I'm sure you can probably get some pointers here.
General notes: The saying among trainers is "you don't catch a zorua. They catch you." and they aren't really wrong. Many parents have smiled indulgently at their child's newly caught "weedle" until it sneezes and breaks the illusion. I generally advise trainers to be aware of basic zorua and zoroark care as the odds of them catching one accidently are slim but never zero.
General care: Though in diet and general housecare, a zorua is not dissimilar to an eevee or vulpix, they are very VERY smart, and as such require near constant enrichment and entertainment. A bored zorua can be destructive. Games, toys, and plenty of training are essential. Another factor to keep in mind is that zorua in particular can be timid. They aren't very big and strong when young, and are potential prey for many larger pokemon, so place a number of hiding spots around the house.
Be mentally prepared to encounter a number of shenanigans. They may take the form of large dangerous pokemon, small silent children, or just hide for hours and watch in amusement as you panic. A patient trainer is a MUST. Zoroarks have slightly different care requirements. Around human sized, they need a little more space, larger sleeping spaces etc. As well, zoroarks are capable of speaking in human form, though how much depends on the pokemon in question. Some can be chatty, others may simply request more treats and fluffier blankets.
Much more important to note is that zoroark are capable of making larger and more realistic illusions. it's not unknown for them to turn their house or bedroom into a forest or glade when they want a nice nap. So be aware of this.
I do not generally recommend the zorua line for people who struggle with disassociation and unreality. Discuss with your medical professional. Care rating: Orange.
Training: Dark types sadly have undeserved reputations for being hard to train. Zorua and zoroark take to battling and training well, and generally enjoy it.
For general day to day behaviour, work on teaching them the difference between funny and cruel pranks. They will play tricks, and you do need to accept that, but there is a difference between playfully hiding your phone and playfully hiding your medication. They aren't cruel by nature, but like children, they do need to be taught that some things just aren't acceptable. As with all pokemon, positive reinforcement is best. Laugh when appropriate, and offer stony silence when it isn't. With time, they'll soon learn the difference.
The zorua line isn't hard to train, but you need to be consistent and fair. Training rating: Green
Safety: No real notes here. Though the illusions can be distressing for some people, as a general rule the zorua line is pretty safe. Though if you let it play with children make absolutely sure the right kid gets taken home. Safety rating: Green.
Overall ranking. A somewhat tricky pokemon, the zorua line is best for people who are patient, alert and tolerant of japes and tomfoolery. Probably not a beginner pokemon, but with its tendency to hide its form, it may wind up being one anyway.

It ties right back into how for a lot of people it isn't just about having a cool animal it's about getting clout or money out of it. And I just can't respect that.
Something something that post about caring about animal welfare means you need to be a massive killjoy sometimes. I don't give a shit about that damn squirrel and raccoon being euthanized they shouldn't have been pets in the first place much less used to make internet content.
