hey. uh, sorry, but can we drop the notion that Dazai arranged for the Flags to die in Stormbringer? Look, I'm too lazy right now to go back and pull up the direct scenes, but that was never stated, it is heavily implied Dazai gave Verlaine the information after they had already died, and if you look at this post by @/popopretty, you'll see that Chuuya only punishes Dazai for doctoring the intel so that he got tortured and Murase died. There is no mention of the Flags.

and Chuuya just so happens to browse online marketplaces when he sees a BEARista plush with a little coffee mug in its hand being sold for 3x its retail value and the background looks eerily familiar, and when it clicks, it's just, Goddammit, Dazai, not again

But Chuuya just keeps his mouth shut because he's taken home ingredients and coffee syrups before to use for himself, and nobody can pry the coffeeshop's matcha powder from his hands. And maybe he has a secret account he uses to vent about work online and doesn't want it coming back to bite him

so then Dazai and Chuuya just give each other the Look. I know that you know

They have to wear nametags at work, but the guidelines never said it had to be their own name, so sometimes Dazai's nametag will say 'Chuuya' or some other random name, and Chuuya will sometimes hear from the back a customer thanking the wrong Chuuya, aka Dazai, for their drink and he just makes a fist and sighs

They're both guilty of sampling pastries that were either wrong orders or the customers didn't want anymore, and they've both walked in on each other scarfing down a slice of swiss roll in the back or a macaron. Dazai just gives a placating, innocent smile as he continues to eat, but Chuuya will give death glares and tell Dazai not to say anything as he's licking away cream from his lower lip before turning away to keep eating

Chuuya dropping milk on the floor and the whole gallon exploding, shouting for Dazai to get a mop, who he finds out has been in the restroom the entire time. Dazai making a cappuccino but he aerates the milk too much and it goes everywhere

I think the reason people believe chuuya would be the more open and affectionate in soukoku (as like. A romantic relationship) is because they believe him to be the mentally stable one and i think the reason people seem to believe he’s one of the few “mentally stable” characters in bsd is because he does not let himself be seen as vulnerable, and the few times we do see him go through something genuinely horrible and having a moment of vulnerability he does not really have the time to truly process it and ends up “moving on” pretty quickly (for example when he was at the flags’ funeral and adam interrupted him, or how when the sheep betrayed him dazai was immediately at his side trying to convince him to join the pm). And even if he does process it and thinks “man that was pretty fucked up wasnt it” it is never shown on screen so i feel like a lot of viewers end up seeing it as him not being bothered by these events and just a pretty chill dude that doesnt wallow in grief or self pity. But i think him never wallowing in grief or self pity is kind of a problem because in the end all he is doing is suppressing all that trauma and not really trying to acknowledge it, but at the same time when he does he ends up pinning the blame on himself (how the sheeps betrayal was his fault, the flags dying because of him). I feel like this impacts how affectionate he is too because he has built up so many walls that at the point when the flags make a party to celebrate the one year anniversary of him joining the pm he gets suspicious, then surprised and then flustered and tries acting like he doesnt care about it. All this is to say that i think him believing he cant show weakness and has to maintain the facade of being “the strongest” makes him seem like some regular degular guy (if he’s not fighting dragons) ends up him getting viewed as some mentally stable, communicative guy with maaaybe just a bit of anger issues when in reality he got so embarrassed by dazai’s corny speech in mersault that he shot him in the head with a gun

This is probably more of my personal headcanon / how I best like to interpret the characters rather than something canon based but... I have been thinking, at the end of the day most of the relationship bonds Dazai created in the ada span between rough and silently hostile. He doesn't get along with Yosano because of their shared link with Mori, and he doesn't like Ranpo because Ranpo being the only person he can't trick or manipulate probably makes him feel unsafe. It's not like he can exactly get along with the Tanizakis either, he's simply... Too distant from them to actually build anything positive with either Naomi or Jun'ichirou.

I think this explains why Dazai is so obsessed with Kunikida and can't leave him alone one second: because despite everything, I truly believe Kunikida is fond of Dazai (for reasons he himself would never be able to explain), and I feel like due to Kunikida's straightforwardness the tension between Dazai and Yosano and Ranpo would go completely unnoticed to Kunikida (whereas otherwise his seniors' negative opinion of Dazai could have negatively influenced Kunikida's feelings for him). That's why Dazai loves to spend time with and torment Kunikida, because he's the only member that doesn't feel directly hostile / out of reach. Even better, you know Kunikida isn't happy with Dazai; but it's also all very superficial, kind of a game, and the hostility isn't personal. It all makes me reflect on how Dazai feels truly desperate for human connection despite what he makes it look like. It's maybe more of a gut feeling, but I do truly believe Kunikida cares about Dazai and is willing to play their game, because I feel like otherwise he would have already told Dazai off definitely.

That also explains why once he met Atsushi Dazai absolutely latches onto him. It's like he's saying, this is my dude, I brought him to the agency; he's under my wing, and he's on my side. Which is a weird thing to say, there's no sides in the ada, but be it relapsing to old habits, be it a deep insecurity of Dazai, I feel like he's trying really hard to create connections and find allies. And Atsushi is such an ego boost for Dazai, I have no doubt Dazai absolutely loves him. In the end, as crazy as it may sound, I'm convinced that Dazai is way more dependent on Atsushi than Atsushi is on him.

But Atsushi is in good terms with the whole agency. Well, because he's Atsushi, and he's kind and clumsy and just trying to do his best, I feel like everyone warms up to him sooner or later. It's very nice to think in the end it may be Atsushi himself to bring Dazai closer to the rest of the ada, by breaking sides that never existed to begin with and linking them all together.
