Shadow & Bone Season 2 Predictions
Prediction 1 (Why a Memory Palace, not a Tether): I was watching an interview about S2 where the cast briefly discussed the difficulties of adapting the “tether bond” aspect of Book 2. I initially scratched my head because, it’s really not with the way the book writes the conversations. In the book its basically Darkling appearing to Alina like he’s in the room, but no one else can see him. That’s not hard to shoot. Then the actors mentioned that they are instead using a “Memory Palace” technique, and everything became clear.
There is potential in a memory palace that does not exist in a tether bond. Regular communication is hard when two people are as angry at each other as they are. With a memory palace we as an audience can watch Alexzander can find memories of the aftermath of his actions in the fold and Alina can find Alexzander’s history of how the fold was created in the first place. It means a fuller understanding of where each other is coming from, and possibly some good self-reflection. All we need to create enough empathy that they don’t kill each other in the finale.
Prediction 2 (Psycho Darkling Cuts): I don’t think we will see Alexzander perform his darkest Book 2 moves (Blinding Baghra, disfiguring Genya, and the creepy Mal doppelganger thing). I think he’ll lock his mom in a cell, and he scare the shit out of Genya with the threat of disfigurement, but no further. The rapey stuff will definitely not make an appearance. I do expect see him building his grisha following by massacring some Grisha experimentation labs in other countries. This way it will be a violent and rage filled “Reputation Era”, but also understandable a la Dany in GOT.
Prediction 3 (Toxic Mal Cuts): To my recollection a large part of Book 2 is Malina relation drama AKA Mal acting like an insecure, self-centered, possessive tool. I don’t expect to see most of that junk in the show. Show Mal is a dream (and I say this as someone more interested in the SHOW Darklina ship). I think we might get a little jealousy and insecurity as he realizes he is travelling a very different path from her. He will at some point have to break the news to Alina that she is pretty much immortal. However I generally expect to see them romantically together and supportive of each other on their Amplifiers hunt.
Prediction 4 (Amplifier Hunt): Based on the trailers think the whole of the amplifiers hunt discoveries will make it into this season. Darkling’s comment about her being willing to sacrifice want she loves the most seems suspiciously like he knows about the third amplifier. The fold won’t come down this season, but Alina will be aware what its going to take before the end of the season.
Prediction 5 (Crows and Nina): I think anyone waiting to see Nina’s and Matias’ story move is going to be disappointed. I think Nina will see him at the prison, but if he speaks to her at all it will be ugly. Nina for her part I think will spend the season proving her worth to the Crows, so that they’ll help her free Mattias next season. The Crows will need to deal with a pissed off Pekka until they are hired to steal information about the firebird from the Shu Han by Alina and co.
Prediction 6 (Darkling Final Fight With Alina): I think this season is the last time we will see a big showdown between Alina and Alexzander. In the trilogy it was so anticlimactic that all three stories end with Alina vs Darkling. More than twice is too much. I also don’t think we’ll get the Mal interference (which always reminded me of the Rose/Finn disaster at the end of Last Jedi). Alina will “win”, by which I mean I think they’ll play chicken and Alexzander will blink first, either allowing himself to be taken into custody, or running.
Prediction 7 (the New Enemy and Uneasy Alliance):  The Apparat and/or the Royal family will betray Alina in the finale, leaving the final moments to be Mal visiting Alexzander and forming a pact with him.

for the asoiaf themed asks: 19. a theory you’ve adopted as canon / 20. a theory you pray never comes true?
19. A theory you’ve adopted as canon
I don’t even necessarily ship them bc they’ve yet to interact in book canon but I kind of operate under the assumption that Jon will be Dany’s third and final husband…they’re Henry Tudor (Dany) and Elizabeth of York (Jon)…there’s a lot to support it in the text but this vision from the House of the Undying alone is incredibly convincing to me:
Glowing like sunset, a red sword was raised in the hand of a blue-eyed king who cast no shadow. A cloth dragon swayed on poles amidst a cheering crowd. From a smoking tower, a great stone beast took wing, breathing shadow fire.... mother of dragons, slayer of lies ... Her silver was trotting through the grass, to a darkling stream beneath a sea of stars. A corpse stood at the prow of a ship, eyes bright in his dead face, grey lips smiling sadly. A blue flower grew from a chink in a wall of ice, and filled the air with sweetness.... mother of dragons, bride of fire ...
“A dead man in the prow of a ship, a blue rose, a banquet of blood ... what does any of it mean, Khaleesi? A mummer's dragon, you said. What is a mummer's dragon, pray?”
Bonus: after reading A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms I think it’s pretty obvious that Young Griff is not just the aforementioned mummer’s dragon but also a Blackfyre
20. A theory you pray never comes true
Unsurprisingly I hate theories about Daenerys that are some variation of “she’s going to go mad/she’ll be enslaved and raped by Euron/she’ll turn evil and willingly become his consort and corpse queen analog.” Obviously I’m biased bc she’s my favorite but I think that type of theory is misogynistic and fucking stupid and based on my analysis of the text and its historical influences I don’t really think George would go there. But if he did I would still call it misogynistic and fucking stupid

Notes: This is the first part of the work based on this.
Dany and the Darkling (I’m using Aleksander, because it’s a bit weird calling him the Darkling the whole time) are the catalyst to the party that brought in the chaos. Although, Thranduil is to blame more, because he brought the wine.
Anyway... I still haven’t figured out the ships, but I’m working on it. I want 5 crossover pairings based on the fandoms that were chosen.
***
Chapter 1
Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons, groaned before grinning as she felt lips on her neck.
She knew very well who those lips belonged to.
She rolled to her back and opened her eyes.
“Good morning, General.”
Aleksander, the Black General -and now her husband -grinned at her. “Good morning, Your Grace.” He gave her a slow kiss that made Dany’s toes curl. “Politics never felt this good.”
She chuckled. “Heavens… I feel… Heavy.”
Aleksander nodded. “It was that wine the elves brought. Dangerous thing.”
Dany groaned as the memory came back. She wasn’t a weak drinker, but whatever the elves put on that wine...
Which reminded her… “Did we really see…”
Aleksander opened a smirk “Oh yes.”
Well, the wine was strong. And it was a party, people tended to get… Well… Some were drunk, and it wasn’t strange that they would look for company, but…
Oh great. She’d just got married and now they possibly had a diplomatic crisis in their hands because people had gotten frisky because of a wedding and some wine.
“Was that really Stark kissing…” Aleksander started, but it was her time to cut him.
“Yes.”
They shared amused looks, before Daenerys remembering that there were actual kings involved, and it could as well end very badly.
“I don’t even want to imagine how this is going to turn out.” If this was a normal crowd, people would wake up, regret their decisions and move on. But… These were not normal people.
Aleksander shrugged dismissively. “We’ll find out pretty fast after the first scream.”
“First scream?” Dany asked confused.
“The first one to wake up and scream in shock once they find themselves with company, will wake the others.” He predicted.
Dany chuckled. “How do you know?”
“This place is chock full of warriors.” He pointed out. “A scream will set them all off, hangover or not.”
Dany was laughing, but then a piercing, feminine scream rang out in the long hallways.
The new couple shared a look.
“Now it starts.” The Darkling grinned mischievously.

Jon Snow = Rhaegal
This is a sibling post to this. It works precisely in the same way.
When she opened it, she found piles of the finest velvets and damasks   the Free Cities could produce … and resting on top, nestled in the soft cloth, three huge eggs.  (...) One egg was a deep green, with burnished bronze flecks that came and went depending on how Dany turned it.
Hypothesis: Jon Snow = Rhaegal
If Aegon = Viserys, then Jon = Rhaegal.
Other thing to note is the bronze is a metal important in the north, for example the crown of the kings of winter was made of bronze. The egg has a duplicitious nature, things appear and disappear depending on how Danerys looks at it.
The green one shall be Rhaegal, for my valiant brother who died on the green banks of the Trident.
Like Aegon = Viserion post, what Rhaegar die for exactly? Robert’s Rebellion was fuelled by Aerys being a crazy loon, but in specific Rhaegar’s death came at Robert’s hands, who killed him for “kidnapping” Lyanna Stark.
"The Others take your honor!" Robert swore. "What did any Targaryen ever know of honor? Go down into your crypt and ask Lyanna about the dragon's honor!"
"You avenged Lyanna at the Trident," Ned said, halting beside the king. Promise me, Ned, she had whispered.
"That did not bring her back." Robert looked away, off into the grey distance. "The gods be damned. It was a hollow victory they gave me. A crown … it was the girl I prayed them for. Your sister, safe … and mine again, as she was meant to be. I ask you, Ned, what good is it to wear a crown? The gods mock the prayers of kings and cowherds alike."
Tumblr media
(his face... HIS FACE...)
Like Aegon = Viserion post, all these aspects are also present in House of Undying visions.
three fires must you light . . . one for life and one for death and one to love (...) Viserys screamed as the molten gold ran down his cheeks and filled his mouth. A tall lord with copper skin and silver-gold hair stood beneath the banner of a fiery stallion, a burning city behind him. Rubies flew like drops of blood from the chest of a dying prince, and he sank to his knees in the water and with his last breath murmured a woman's name. . . three treasons will you know . . . once for blood and once for gold and once for love . . .(...) Her silver was trotting through the grass, to a darkling stream beneath a sea of stars. A corpse stood at the prow of a ship,  eyes bright in his dead face, grey lips smiling sadly. A blue flower  grew from a chink in a wall of ice, and filled the air with sweetness. .  . . mother of dragons, bride of fire . . .
There’s the love of a woman, since Rhaegar dies whispering a woman’s name, then there’s the result of that love, Jon represented as a blue flower (Lyanna’s favourite) on the Wall (where he spends most of the narrative. Fits.
Considering the trichotomy Rhaegar / Rhaegal / Jon applies to the third stanza of the first and the third groups, it’s natural to apply it to the second stanza, so somehow must fit, so in the end we have. “three fires must you light . . . (...) one to love (...) Rubies flew like drops of blood from the chest of a dying prince, and he sank to his knees in the water and with his last breath murmured a woman's name. . . “ and “three mounts must you ride (...) one to love (...) From a smoking tower, a great stone beast took wing, breathing shadow fire. . . (...) and “three treasons will you know . . . once for gold (...) A blue flower  grew from a chink in a wall of ice, and filled the air with sweetness. . ."
Applying the same logic to the trichotomy Viserys / Viserion / Aegon, we then have. “three fires must you light . . . (...) one for death (...) A tall lord with copper skin and silver-gold hair stood beneath the banner of a fiery stallion, a burning city behind him.“ and “three mounts must you ride (...) one to dread (...) A cloth dragon swayed on poles amidst a cheering crowd. (...) and “three treasons will you know . . . once for gold (...) A corpse stood at the prow of a ship, eyes bright in his dead face, grey lips smiling sadly."
Like Aegon = Viserion post, I said the conclusion of all that Viserys being crowned with a “golden crown” by Drogo, Viserion named after him, and Aegon echoing in that specific’s dragon subtext was Danerys feels betrayed by Aegon crowning himself king of the Iron Throne, then she burns King’s Landing as a response.
Similarly, the conclusion for all this Rhaegar dying for the woman he loved, Rhaegal being named after him, and Jon echoing in that specific’s dragon subtext is Danerys is betrayed by Jon loving another. In the show, Jon Snow loved his sisters, that’s why he betrayed her and killed her. So... it fits, though the types of love aren’t the same. *shifts eyes*
It’s worth noting that applying this logic to the first stanza of the three groups, we get Danerys / Drogon. Three heads has the dragon.
----
What else? All of Rhaegal’s mentions are listed below... and some of them fit what we saw in the show.
A CLASH OF KINGS
The green one shall be Rhaegal, for my valiant brother who died on the green banks of the Trident.
We all know Rhaegar’s story. In broad strokes, he was “born in grief” while others died around him, something happened as a young child which made him decide to become a warrior despite not being fit for it, he’s melancholy by nature and goes to Harrenhal to brood, is fond of wearing black to battle, he’s in love with a Stark (in Jon’s case, only platonically, *suuure... rolls eyes*) and let hundreds die for her sake, etc etc. Like Viserys isn’t Aegon, Rhaegar isn’t Jon... but you know..
"Your hair is coming back, Khaleesi," Jhiqui said as she scraped sand off her back.(...) Dothraki men wore their hair in long oiled braids, and cut them only when defeated. Perhaps I should do the same, she thought, to remind them that Drogo's strength lives within me now. Khal Drogo had died with his hair uncut, a boast few men could make.
Across the tent, Rhaegal unfolded green wings to flap and flutter a half foot before thumping to the carpet. When he landed, his tail lashed back and forth in fury, and he raised his head and screamed. If I had wings, I would want to fly too, Dany thought. The Targaryens of old had ridden upon dragonback when they went to war. (ACOK ~ Danerys I)
Danerys thinking of her defeated hair and of Drogo’s undefeated hair, followed by Rhaegal screaming and Targaryens fighting in wars, suggests Danerys will be defeated by Jon but not in battle. This is what happened in the show, Jon defeated Danerys but not in battle. Some thing between Rhaegal and a braid had already been alluded to in AGOT (see at the very end of this post).
"Then I grieve for you, Dragonmother, and for bleeding Westeros, bereft of its rightful king."
Beneath Dany's gentle fingers, green Rhaegal stared at the stranger with eyes of molten gold. When his mouth opened, his teeth gleamed like black needles. (ACOK ~ Danerys II)
The (ship!) captain laments Viserys’ death, who was the rightful king of Westeros, then Rhaegal basically bares his teeth like a dog or... a wolf.. ready to attack. I once thought this was just a pun on Jon being the rightful king of Westeros, but it might be the case that Danerys kills Aegon, who’s the rightful king of Westeros, with Jon taking offence on his behalf.
It’s also worth noting Danerys is being “nice” to Rhaegal as she’s touching him with “gentle fingers”, while he’s the one being aggressive and baring his teeth. We’ll see this pattern of her being nice and soft with him (except for ONE notable occasion), but he’s always a bitch to her, many times.
"A dream delayed, no more." Dany's tight silver collar was chafing against her throat. She unfastened it and flung it aside. The collar was set with an enchanted amethyst that Xaro swore would ward her against all poisons. The Pureborn were notorious for offering poisoned wine to those they thought dangerous, but they had not given Dany so much as a cup of water. They never saw me for a queen, she thought bitterly. I was only an afternoon's amusement, a horse girl with a curious pet.
Rhaegal hissed and dug sharp black claws into her bare shoulder as Dany stretched out a hand for the wine. Wincing, she shifted him to her other shoulder, where he could claw her gown instead of her skin. She was garbed after the Qartheen fashion. Xaro had warned her that the Enthroned would never listen to a Dothraki, so she had taken care to go before them in flowing green samite with one breast bared, silvered sandals on her feet, with a belt of black-and-white pearls about her waist. For all the help they offered, I could have gone naked. Perhaps I should have. She drank deep. (ACOK ~ Danerys III)
Like in Aegon = Viserys, where the talk of poison was mentioned, here it shows up once more (it will appear one more time). I do think this is plenty of suggestion that someone from #TeamAegon is most likely going to attempt to poison Danerys, just like Varys tried in the show.
Danerys realises they never saw her as queen, just an amusement with a curious pet, which is followed by Rhaegal hurting her by sinking his claws into her skin. The subtext is interesting, because the former is what political!Jon was based on (Jon never seeing Danerys as worthy of being queen, but using her for the dragons), while the latter is basically what happened in the show (Jon killed Danerys with a knife). Some malicious stabbing is definetly occuring, whether she dies or not... maybe. I’m still holding on to my girl Arya to come through.
Also worth noting, there’s a whole description of Qartheen fashion of one bared breast, but she thinks she might have gone naked instead. In the show, Danerys is delusional enough to try to rekindle her relationship with Jon after blowing up KL and he entertained it to distract her, before stabbing her. Then I remember Littlefinger’s quote "When you find yourself in bed with an ugly woman, the best thing to do is close your eyes and get on with it. (...) Waiting won't make the maid any prettier. Kiss her and be done with it. (...) A steel kiss." I didn’t think that Danita begging for her nephew’s cock while he kills her couldn’t be topped, but doing it while thinking they’ll do the nasty...
I have become the most splendid beggar in the world, but a beggar all the same. She hated it, as her brother must have. (....) I have something Viserys never had. I have the dragons. The dragons are all the difference.
She stroked Rhaegal. The green dragon closed his teeth around the meat of her hand and nipped hard. (...) Aggo guarded on her other side, while Rakharo rode behind the procession, watching the faces in the crowd for any sign of danger. Ser Jorah she had left behind today, to guard her other dragons; the exile knight had been opposed to this folly from the start. He distrusts everyone, she reflected, and perhaps for good reason.
As Dany lifted her goblet to drink, Rhaegal sniffed at the wine and drew his head back, hissing. "Your dragon has a good nose." Xaro wiped his lips. "The wine is ordinary. It is said that across the Jade Sea they make a golden vintage so fine that one sip makes all other wines taste like vinegar. Let us take my pleasure barge and go in search of it, you and I.”
"The Arbor makes the best wine in the world," Dany declared. Lord Redwyne had fought for her father against the Usurper, she remembered, one of the few to remain true to the last. Will he fight for me as well?  (...) I mean to sail to Westeros, and drink the wine of vengeance from the skull of the Usurper." She scratched Rhaegal under one eye, and his jade-green wings unfolded for a moment, stirring the still air in the palanquin.
A single perfect tear ran down the cheek of Xaro Xhoan Daxos. "Will nothing turn you from this madness?"
Danerys thinks of how she’s superior to Viserys, she has dragons while he has not, followed by Rhaegal attacking her. It happens once more a few paragraphs down. Danerys says she will kill the usurper and Rhaegal is basically raising his hackles. Again, the subtext of Danerys killing Aegon because she doesn’t think he’s a real dragon like she is, but then Jon taking offence on his behalf and attacking her shows up.
Interestingly, in the same segment Danerys thinks how Viserys was known as the beggar king, but as we also know from the Aegon = Viserion post, Viserion does what Viserys could not, Viserys begged (even though he said the dragon doesn’t beg) while Aegon refuses to beg for Danerys’ help (” Why should I go running to my aunt as if I were a beggar?”) and goes on his own.
Also interestingly, after Rhaegal attacks Danerys, she looks outside to watch her bloodriders protecting her and thinking Jorah distrusts everyone with good reason. But Rhaegal is inside of her palanquin with her, the bloodriders won’t protect her against the dragon. In the show, Jon was allowed inside the Red Keep past her Unsullied / Dothraki guards, then attacked her.
There’s also yet another mentioned of foul wine. Danerys’ was almost killed in AGOT with poisoned wine. In the show, Varys tried to kill her with poisoned wine (which was one of his suggestions when Robert was brainstorming how to get rid of her). She mentions the Redwynes and what loyalty they have. At this point, Redwynes are Tyrell loyal.
In the show, Varys backs Danerys (instead of Aegon) and Oleanna (who is a Redwyne!) allies with Danerys to get revenge on Cersei (in theory, she has Aegon’s role). Whatever conodrum D&D made to compensate for Aegon being slashed off, we have elements in common here. Varys (#TeamAegon) and poison as well as wine and the Redwynes (in specific, Oleanna).
Drogon was curled up beneath her arm, as hot as a stone that has soaked all day in the blazing sun. Rhaegal and Viserion were fighting over a scrap of meat,  buffeting each other with their wings as smoke hissed from their  nostrils. (ACOK ~ Danerys III)
Like said in Aegon = Viserion post, Aegon and Jon, fighting over something (most likely north versus south). This happens while Drogon (Danerys) soaks beneath the sun (Slaver’s  Bay, Volantis, you know beyond the narrow sea). Speculation for book only, most likely Jon and Aegon will naturally clash in TWOW / ADOS, while Danerys is terrorising elsewhere.
A STORM OF SWORDS
Viserion's scales were the color of fresh cream, his horns, wing bones, and spinal crest a dark gold that flashed bright as metal in the sun. Rhaegal was made of the green of summer and the bronze of fall. They soared above the ships in wide circles, higher and higher, each trying to climb above the other.
Dragons always preferred to attack from above, Dany had learned. Should either get between the other and the sun, he would fold his wings and dive screaming, and they would tumble from the sky locked together in a tangled scaly ball, jaws snapping and tails lashing. The first time they had done it, she feared that they meant to kill each other, but it was only sport. No sooner would they splash into the sea than they would break apart and rise again, shrieking and hissing, the salt water steaming off them as their wings clawed at the air. Drogon was aloft as well, though not in sight; he would be miles ahead, or miles behind, hunting. (ASOS ~ Danerys I)
Same sentiment as above. Aegon and Jon fight each other, with the added bonus that it isn’t very serious (or not “permanent” enemies), while Danerys is doing something else elsewhere.
Rhaegal and Viserion were the size of small dogs, Drogon only a  little larger, and any dog would have out-weighed them; they were all  wings and neck and tail, lighter than they looked. And so Daenerys  Targaryen must rely on wood and wind and canvas to bear her home. (ASOS ~ Danerys I)
Like said in Aegon = Viserion post, most likely, just flavour test. Could indicate Danerys’ forces will outmatch Jon and Aegon separately though. In the show, this fit for #TeamJon. And now that I think of it, also fit #TeamCersei (who’s filling for Aegon’s role).
She took a chunk of salt pork out of the bowl in her lap and held it up for her dragons to see. All three of them eyed it hungrily. Rhaegal spread green wings and stirred the air, and Viserion's neck swayed back and forth like a long pale snake's as he followed the movement of her hand. "Drogon," Dany said softly, "dracarys." And she tossed the pork in the air.
Drogon moved quicker than a striking cobra. Flame roared from his mouth, orange and scarlet and black, searing the meat before it began to fall. As his sharp black teeth snapped shut around it, Rhaegal's head darted close, as if to steal the prize from his brother's jaws, but Drogon swallowed and screamed, and the smaller green dragon could only hiss in frustration.
"Stop that, Rhaegal," Dany said in annoyance, giving his head a swat. "You had the last one. I'll have no greedy dragons." She smiled at Ser Jorah. "I won't need to char their meat over a brazier any longer."
"So I see. Dracarys?"
All three dragons turned their heads at the sound of that word, and Viserion  let loose with a blast of pale gold flame that made Ser Jorah take a  hasty step backward. Dany giggled. "Be careful with that word, ser, or  they're like to singe your beard off. It means 'dragonfire' in High  Valyrian. I wanted to choose a command that no one was like to utter by  chance." (ASOS ~ Danerys I)
All three dragons are eager to fight. “three heads has the dragon”. The Dance of Dragons II. Other things to note. Danerys hits Rhaegal for being greedy. I cannot believe she hit him. Like... he’s just a baby. :(
"The warlocks in Qarth told you that you would be betrayed three times,"  the exile knight reminded her, as Viserion and Rhaegal began to snap  and claw at each other.   (ASOS ~ Danerys I)
Like said in the Aegon = Viserion post, Aegon and Jon, fighting over something. It’s likely they’ll fight as a north  faction versus south faction. Either against each other for the land, or against Danerys to defend each of their factions. Either way, these must be the root of their betrayals. This is speculation for book only, for TWOW / ADOS.
Dany had commanded that the top be removed, so her three dragons might be chained to the platform. Irri and Jhiqui rode with them, to try and keep them calm. Yet Viserion's tail lashed back and forth, and smoke rose angry from his nostrils. Rhaegal could sense something wrong as well. Thrice he tried to take wing, only to be pulled down by the heavy chain in Jhiqui's hand. Drogon coiled into a ball, wings and tail tucked tight. Only his eyes remained to tell that he was not asleep. (ASOS ~ Danerys III)
Viserion and Rhaegal (Aegon and Jon) know something is wrong. Drogon (Danerys) doesn’t give a shit. This is the same chapter Danerys burns Astapor sooo... not a good look for Daniella.
Drogon flew almost lazily at Kraznys, black wings beating. As he gave  the slaver another taste of fire, Irri and Jhiqui unchained Viserion  and Rhaegal, and suddenly there were three dragons in the air. (ASOS ~ Danerys III)
Like said in the Aegon = Viserion post, a three way battle  “the dragon has three heads”. The Dance of Dragons II.
(there’s a bunch of Rhaegal references already covered in Aegon = Viserion post, fast-forward to the next not covered one).
Daario is right, I shouldn't have banished him. I should have kept him, or I should have killed him. She played at being a queen, yet sometimes she still felt like a scared little girl. Viserys always said what a dolt I was. Was he truly mad? She closed the book. She could still recall Ser Jorah, if she wished. Or send Daario to kill him.
Dany fled from the choice, out onto the terrace. She found Rhaegal asleep beside the pool, a green and bronze coil basking in the sun. Drogon was perched up atop the pyramid, in the place where the huge bronze harpy had stood before she had commanded it to be pulled down. He spread his wings and roared when he spied her. There was no sign of Viserion, but when she went to the parapet and scanned the horizon she saw pale wings in the far distance, sweeping above the river. He is hunting. They grow bolder every day. Yet it still made her anxious when they flew too far away. One day one of them may not return, she thought.
This one was actually covered before, one of many Viserion turns away from Danerys, paralleling Aegon’s choice of not going to Danerys and invading Westeros on his own. However, what I didn’t notice the first time because this isn’t a proper meta, just dumping thoughts, This is the narrative block of Danerys finding out of Jorah’s betrayal (what she thinks is one anyway). Twice poignant!
Rhaegal is asleep beside a pool, Drogon is atop a pyramid where a harpy once stood, and Viserion is hunting in the distance. Obviously, distance doesn’t matter. These are stand-ins for Jon and Winterfell (the godswood pool... that’s an interesting place for the betrayal for platonic love to be in :)...) and Aegon attacking Westerons, while Danerys is still beyond the narrow sea. If this lecture is correct, she’s reaaally coming very late to Westeros.
Tumblr media
A DANCE OF DRAGONS
Almost the whole shtick was already covered in the Aegon = Viserion post. Things to note: Rhaegal is aggressive towards Danerys and towards those that hurt his brother.
Once, not long ago, he had ridden on her shoulder, his tail coiled round her arm. Once she had fed him morsels of charred meat from her own hand. He had been the first chained up. Daenerys had led him to the pit herself and shut him up inside with several oxen. Once he had gorged himself he grew drowsy. They had chained him whilst he slept.
Rhaegal had been harder. Perhaps he could hear his brother raging in the pit, despite the walls of brick and stone between them. In the end, they had to cover him with a net of heavy iron chain as he basked on her terrace, and he fought so fiercely that it had taken three days to carry him down the servants' steps, twisting and snapping. Six men had been burned in the struggle. (ADWD ~ Danerys II)
Jonnathan Snowflake died went to the gym and flexes hard. I’m kidding.
The subtext suggests it’s more difficult to subdue Jon than Aegon. Or better, it suggests Danerys actually tricked Aegon into submission with some kind of tempting offer, while Jon had to submitted by force. For example, it would make sense if Danerys offered an alliance to Aegon and he accepted but then never followed through (like Astapor or Yunkai). While Jon wouldn’t be swayed, so he was forced to do it. Not quite it went in the show, when Cersei (Aegon) was the one that refused to yeld, while Jon... well that trainwreck. It could be that Jon was also playing some of Aegon’s (maculine) role.
The rain had drowned the worst of the fires, but wisps of smoke still rose from the smoldering ruin that had been the pyramid of Hazkar, and the great black pyramid of Yherizan where Rhaegal had made his lair hulked in the gloom like a fat woman bedecked with glowing orange jewels. (...) The only Meereenese the dragons had slain since Harghaz the Hero had been the slavers foolish enough to object when Rhaegal attempted to make his lair atop the pyramid of Hazkar. (...)  He wondered where Rhaegal was. Thus far the green dragon had shown himself to be more dangerous than the white.     (ADWD ~ The Queen’s Hand)
A dragon on top of a pyramid = king. It could be Winterfell / North sure, but this came AFTER Rhaegal killed Quentyn on Viserion’s behalf. Such it could be King’s Landing. I’d always though Jon would very briefly be king at the end, until he abdicated in favour of Bran to avoid another war, as nobody wanted those Targs on the throne. Doesn’t fit with the punish part though.
It’s also worth noting that once again, the subtext plants the idea that Jon is more dangerous than Aegon. As a final note, Rhaegal making his lair hulked in the gloom like “a fat woman bedecked in flowing orange jewels” is very Smaug of him. <3
----
Now, for bonus, the eggs proper. Not Rhaegal, but his green egg features in an important scene, just after Danerys hits Viserys for the first time.
"I am the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, not some grass-stained savage with bells in his hair," Viserys spat back at her. (...) His fingers dug into her arm painfully and for an instant Dany felt like a child again, quailing in the face of his rage. She reached out with her other hand and grabbed the first thing she touched, the belt she'd hoped to give him, a heavy chain of ornate bronze medallions. She swung it with all her strength.
It caught him full in the face. Viserys let go of her. Blood ran down his cheek where the edge of one of the medallions had sliced it open. "You are the one who forgets himself," Dany said to him. "Didn't you learn anything that day in the grass? Leave me now, before I summon my khas to drag you out. And pray that Khal Drogo does not hear of this, or he will cut open your belly and feed you your own entrails." (...) Drops of his blood had spattered the beautiful sandsilk cloak.  (...) "Please, bring me one of the dragon's eggs."
Irri fetched the egg with the deep green shell, bronze flecks shining amid its scales as she turned it in her small hands. Dany curled up on her side, pulling the sandsilk cloak across her and cradling the egg in the hollow between her swollen belly and small, tender breasts. (...) She was lying there, holding the egg, when she felt the child move within her … as if he were reaching out, brother to brother, blood to blood. "You are the dragon," Dany whispered to him, "the true dragon. I know it. I know it." And she smiled, and went to sleep dreaming of home. (AGOT ~ Danerys IV)
Like in Aegon = Viserys post, I said that there is evidence for Jon taking offence over Danerys trying to usurp his brother Aegon. We can see that reflected in this scene. I once thought the whole thing was about Danerys’ trying to usurp Jon (I thought the visions were more complex than what they were), but right now I’m thinking that is about Danerys’ usurping Aegon (and / or his cousins) and Jon taking offence over it.
In this case, Danerys gets Viserys some clothing offers. Viserys doesn’t take her offer well and rages against it, saying he’s the king. The two fight and Danerys reaches for the belt and uses it like a whip, drawing blood from his cheek and staining the cloak. Danerys then covers herself and the green egg with the bloodstained cloak and saying that Viserys isn’t the dragon, Rhaego (Drogon) is, and dreams of home.
Let’s recap how Viserion is taken prisoner, which is basically the same steps as the Danerys and Viserys fight above. Danerys tricks Viserion by baiting him with a meaty offer, then he rages on the pit when he realises the truth. Much later, Quentyn tries to subdue Viserion with a whip and someone draws blood from his neck. Moving forward, Danerys says unborn Rhaego is the true dragon, which implies she believes that Viserys isn’t. You know, the reason why Danerys says once Viserys is murdered by Drogo. So, this all fits with the subtext of Danerys killing Aegon because he was crowned king.
Then Danerys covers herself and the green egg with the sandsilk cloak, but note that this cloak is stained with Viserys’ blood. Then she dreams of home, which in Danerys’ chapters ALWAYS means Danerys burning King’s Landing (I made a post about this before, it’s somewhere). All it was missing from the Danerys and Viserys fight versus Viserion taken prisoner is Rhaegal killing Quentyn for the affront against his brother. However, Rhaegal is in this scene too, inside his egg beneath the bloodied cloak. It’s “missing” Viserion though... or is it?
Dany gave the silver over to the slaves for grooming and entered her tent. It was cool and dim beneath the silk. As she let the door flap close behind her, Dany saw a finger of dusty red light reach out to touch her dragon's eggs across the tent. For an instant a thousand droplets of scarlet flame swam before her eyes. (AGOT ~ Danerys III)
The Usurper has woken the dragon now, she told herself … and her eyes went to the dragon's eggs resting in their nest of dark velvet. The shifting lamplight limned their stony scales, and shimmering motes of jade and scarlet and gold swam in the air around them, like courtiers around a king. (...) Cradling the egg with both hands, she carried it to the fire and pushed it down amongst the burning coals. The black scales seemed to glow as they drank the heat. Flames licked against the stone with small red tongues. Dany placed the other two eggs beside the black one in the fire. As she stepped back from the brazier, the breath trembled in her throat. She watched until the coals had turned to ashes. (AGOT ~ Danerys VI)
The Dance of Dragons between the three Targaryens might feature in the three egg mentions described above. It’s worth noting the first features Danerys returning home (”entered her tent”) and a red door (”the door flap close behind her, a finger of dusty red light”). In Danerys’ chapters, either always means burning King’s Landing (”a thousand droplets of scarlet flame swam before her eyes”).
"Yes?" the maegi asked. "What is it you wish, Khaleesi?"
"Bring me … egg … dragon's egg … please …" Her lashes turned to lead, and she was too weary to hold them up.
When she woke the third time, a shaft of golden sunlight was pouring through the smoke hole of the tent, and her arms were wrapped around a dragon's egg. It was the pale one, its scales the color of butter cream, veined with whorls of gold and bronze, and Dany could feel the heat of it. Beneath her bedsilks, a fine sheen of perspiration covered her bare skin. Dragondew, she thought. Her fingers trailed lightly across the surface of the shell, tracing the wisps of gold, and deep in the stone she felt something twist and stretch in response. (AGOT ~ Danerys IX)
Danerys doesn’t want her child or Drogo, her first thoughts are the eggs. This is quite telling where her priorities lie. Regardless, Danerys just miscarried Rhaego and the egg chosen ot be there is... Viserion’s. There’s Rhaego in the sandsilk sequence after all and this link between Rhaego and Viserion is suggest a third time in...
She climbed the pyre herself to place the eggs around her sun-and-stars. The black beside his heart, under his arm. The green beside his head, his braid coiled around it. The cream-and-gold down between his legs.(AGOT ~ Danerys X)
Danerys’ places Egg!Drogon besides Drogo’s heart and the dragon was named after the man, so Drogo’s blood sacrifice awakened Drogon. Danerys’ places Egg!Viserion at Drogo’s loins, who produced... that’s right, Rhaego, so Rhaego’s blood sacrifice awakened Viserion. Danerys’ thought Rhaego was “the true dragon”, not Viserys... and that’s how she justified killing him. But Rhaego’s blood sacrifice awakened Viserion, the dragon that is symbolic of Aegon, whom she’ll kill for not believing he’s a true dragon.
Also, Danerys’ places Egg!Rhaegal next to Drogo’s head with his braid around it, the symbol of his undefeated status (congruent with ACOK mentioned somewhere above), so Mirri Maz Duur’s sacrifice awakened Rhaegal. Danerys’ thought she was using Mirri Maz Duur, teaching her a lesson... but the dragon the maegi’s blood awakened, is also the dragon that is symbolic of the man that kills Danerys.
Narrative vengence served (very) cold.

omg it’s so nice to see someone who loves the darkling as well 🥺🥺 i read S&B way back and the fandom was pretty chill with him even LB used to retweet a lot of alarkling fan art. it’s only now that she’s talked about it being inspired from her abusive relationship and kinda trashed him lol. which i mean he is a villain but it’s just kinda funny that she’s only doing it now. i think it’s the “reylo effect”😂. back then the marketing for S&B really pushed for alarking. idk i feel it’s kinda sad seeing people hate on him now😭😭 on a happier note ben barnes as the darkling is literally a give from god❤️ also didn’t know LB is a dany anti i’m disappointed🙄
I just read the books after the show so I don't know anything about fandom past so yeah feel free to drop by in my asks to nerd out about the darkling. Ben Barnes really elevates everything he's in. And as a show to books fan I find the darkling to be the only interesting and compelling character in the story. The only other character I enjoyed reading was Nikolai and I'm really excited to see who plays him next season.
I just hate it when any creator trashes their own character. Like that came out of your brain bro. Why trash your own creation especially when it's the only thing you made that sells. Plus characters based on "evil sexy exes" and projecting that baggage on stories and audience was cringy when male writers made their femme fatales and vamps that die violent deaths. And it's still cringy when female writers do it. Sexy vamps and villains will always outshine their bitter creators for me 😂
I personally don't ship darklina because I didn't like the writing for alina's character but I get it since their first makeout scene is the only sexy scene in the entire series.
I was disappointed by the dany anti thing too but wasn't surprised because the grisha trilogy really exudes that boo freggin hoo seeking power bad status quo good even in dystopian hellscapes vibe.

Answers for Jonerys
Tumblr media
The arguments put forward for the X theory are level by level. Level 1 arguments often contain the strongest sign. Second level arguments support level 1, but alone have only "thought-provoking" effects. Third level arguments, on their own, have no effect, and are additional arguments that support level 1 and 2.
> Her silver was trotting through the grass, to a darkling stream beneath a sea of stars. A corpse stood at the prow of a ship, eyes bright in his dead face, grey lips smiling sadly. A blue flower grew from a chink in a wall of ice, and filled the air with sweetness… . mother of dragons, bride of fire …
The strongest argument naturally ranks first. In fact, the whole theory is based on this argument.  There are two problems with this argument.
The first problem is that this is the only level 1 argument. No other level 1 argument was presented, whereas a strong theory must have more than one level 1 argument. (It is not completely necessary, though.)
The second problem is the misinterpretation of this quote.
We need to understand what a shipper theory is. Both sides have to fall in love with each other, have a relationship together, and something (even if it doesn't end with a happy ending) at the end of the day.
For example, one-sided love or forced coexistence can never be a shipper theory. Or something like a one-night romance. (An example is Arya and Gendry on the show. This is not a ship.)
Let's go back to the argument. When interpreting this argument, Jonerys fandoms overlook a fact.
Dany is warned by the Undying Ones. They told her that some events would happen and that it would be her disaster. Dany didn't understand the jigsaw words. So Dany asked them to explain and show her and they did.
This vision is an image shown to explain those disasters. To show Dany things and people that will hurt in the future ... The blue flower on the ice is Jon Snow. This flower emits sweet scent into the air. This is not a "love" sign, but a "death" sign. In books, the word "sweet" appears to be a sign of death in weight (or to face death). In addition, the word sweet and death are used side by side. So we need to pay attention to the places where this word is used.
For example, Sweet Raff, nicknamed "sweet", shows that GRRM sentenced this person to death. He died in his Mercy POV. Dany remembers Sir Willem smelling "sweet" when he was on his death bed. (Sickness)+dead=sweet We see that later. Bran's fall. Before fall he felt sweet pain in his body and also he used "sweet peach" word and he almost died, he was in coma. Who gave poison to Jon Arryn? "A sweet old friend."(Lysa and LF). Varys calls Lancel as "sweet boy" And Tyrion too in second book. He almost died in Battle of Blackwater and he may die in the future. Dany's wine was described as "sweet" The wine was poisonous. Drogo's wound smeel "sweet" He died. Jorah even gave Dany a sweet peach. Just like the Renly and Stannis scene (both brothers are dead, will die) (These are just a few examples, more dozens. https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/cr8me0/a_death_mark_in_asoiaf_sweet_spoiler_main/ )
If we pack it all up, Jon Snow will have a direct or indirect stake in Dany's death in the future. So, Jon Snow = dead for Dany.
No one can draw ship theory from such a fate.
> These quotes make a subtle connection between Dany and Val. Jon as we know is very attracted to Val. He first describes Val’s hair as pale silver; Dany of course has pale silver hair. In fact it is one of the most distinguishing features about her. So the connection here is that Val is a substitute for Dany. Also, note that the moon is mention, which as we know is strongly connected symbolically to Dany throughout the series, ex. “Moon of my Life”.
Val's hair is blond. Just once looked like silver hair because of moon. Okay, this is a second level argument. Available.
Dany's contact with the moon covers her relationship with Drogo only in book 1. No one except Drogo calls him "my moon" and has no reference to the moon in the future. So we cannot say that there is a "very strong" moon reference. Ned also calls Arya "the moon" in the first book. By showing this; Can we say Arya = Moon? No, this alone cannot be used. However, for 5 books, Arya has many moon references, unlike Dany. (https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/eo3ghb/arya_stark_and_braavos_moon_and_water_spoiler/ )
This alone does not matter. The word moon shows signs similar to death as the word "sweet".Even though it does not cover all the words of the moon, there has been a death many times before or after the moon appears. Moon Door is a dead place, the moon and moonlight are mentioned all over the place in AGOT’s prologue. The Others appear after a half-moon rises, and there are multiple references to the moonlight reflecting off the Other’s blade. There is a moon icon all over the FM house, even at the door. FM = death. Braavos is a moon city from the beginning. They are enemy of Valyria and dragon lords, and probably all Braavos played a role in the Doom of Valyria (with FM) So Drogo called Dany all the time “my moon” and Dany killed him with a pillow.
That's why it's hard to use the Val and Jon scene for Dany and Jon. At least we can't use it for Jonerys.
What does the moon and sweet weather mean for Val? Death. Twice a death mark. (Jon smelled sweet in book 5 before he died.)
> In these quotes we find a connection between a dream lover of Dany and Jon Snow. In her dream/vision Dany’s lover is a comely young man whose face is hidden in shadows. Jon is described by Ygritte as having a sweet face (comely) and in the two additional quotes below we see Jon describe himself as being in the shadows and we see Mel describe his face as hidden in shadows. These descriptions associate the young lover Dany sees with Jon Snow.
Maybe it's available but I'm not so sure. This sound a bit like a pushing.
The word dream used in the quote of Dany is not a dream seen asleep. This word is a dream used to imagine. Something you do consciously while awake. Here, Dany naturally (awake) dreams of a younger and handsome man for herself. Jorah is old and ugly for him. The word shadow comes naturally from Dany not thinking about a particular man. Because there is no type of man she desires around. Already later she met Daario and found the man she desired. That shade now has a face, and Dany fell in love with him. She constantly thinks about him, and we even see Dany thinking about him in her last POV. (Just like Jon thinks about Arya and Rhaegar thinks about Lyanna. ;) )
> Although the timeline is unclear, Jon was stabbed and presumably killed within the same time that Dany found herself alone in the Dothraki sea. Dany hearing the wolf howl could be the author making a connection between Jon’s death and how Dany would feel about it.
>If Dany knew who Jon was to her, his death would be incredibly sad but most importantly it would be lonely. Jon of course is Dany’s last living relative, although she does not know this. That this wolf howl brought such strong emotions to Dany is definitely something of interest.
Jonsa fandoms also used the same argument. Sansa heard a howl of wolf, and they interpreted it for the same thing. Which of you is correct to interpret?
I'll say it. None of you. There is one to four months between Jon's death and the scenes of these two characters. Another important detail is that in the scene where Jon is dead, the Ghost is not howling in any way and making a sad voice.
In the second book, Jon has the Bran scene, and the Ghost is howling sad and long. A few chapters later, Arya hears the howl of the wolf, which is described in the same words while in Harrenhall. (Here: https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/5cw18j/spoilers_extended_something_strange_about_aryas/d9zw29r/ )
> There would have been a sixth, but the Usurper’s dogs had murdered her brother’s son when he was still a babe at the breast. If he had lived, I might have married him. “
Yes, Young Griff is probably is fake Targaryen and Rhaegar’s son is Jon. But this level 3 argument doesn't mean anything for the Jonerys ship alone.
Dany is not talking about a love subject here, but a traditional “political” Targ marriage. We also see in the same book that Rhaegar's son has a character named Aegon, and he is(was) coming to her to marry Dany. So it's all about the two character stories that Dany and we think are real Aegon ... We will not see a happy marriage anyway, as we know Dany's arc end. So this argument is invalid for Jonerys in any way. (Even if we assume that Jon is in psychology who can marry his aunt)
Most likely, all that is done is the GRRM throwing a fishing rod to us(Dany-Aegon.. or not and we can see those two can marry, maybe, i do not know. Not sure when i think about Euron, whatever).
> Here the author winks and nods at us as Jon is wishing for the very same thing Dany has, three dragons.
> “He might as well wish for another thousand men, and maybe a dragon or three.”
Yes, I smile when I read this scene. I just couldn't understand how you interpreted this for Jonerys. It's hard to say even a level 3 argument. It seems a little bit of pushing again.
Jon asked for 1000 men and then he took it, Jon also asked for 3 dragons. Maybe he will take all Dany's dragons? He's a Targaryen and probably a powerful warg. He can take it all for himself. Or as a matter of "alliance" for the danger of the Other, it is more correct to accept it as a weapon. Already, at first, Jon wanted 1000 men for defense, just as he wanted to defend all three dragons. There is no romantic reference from this.
> Finally, this pair of quotes is both a parallel and a connection between Dany and Jon. Both find themselves laying next to the person they love/are attracted to, as Jon ponders his lost of Ghost and Dany wakes from her nightmare not even the presence of these people they care about can drive the deep loneliness that they both feel.
Parallel scenes can be used as arguments. Sometimes level 2, level 3 ... However, they do not make sense on their own.
Remember, level 2 arguments are to support level 1 strong arguments, but there is no level 1 argument. You put forward one, but that is also completely misinterpretation.
Parallel scenes do not mean anything by themselves, because logically all characters have parallel scenes, life stories. Jon and Arya; Arya and Dany; Jon and Tyrion; Dany-Tyrion-Jon and Dany-Arya ... this is how it goes. For example Arya and Dany   https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/ew2z2y/ice_and_fire_two_sides_of_a_coin_spoiler_main/ and even Dany and Davos: https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/gj1wnp/spoilers_extended_a_big_parallel_between_davos/ Should we call a new ship “Daverys”? :D
Parallel scenes may be a reference, but never a FS. “You are going to marry a King...” This can be FS. “My heart sometimes like a stone...” (Cat) is a FS. Sweet and Moon signs maybe can be a FS.
If this is the case, we can produce ship theories for all characters by looking at all these parallel scenes. There are too many parallel scenes between Arya and Bran. Shall we write another incest ship theory? For example, we can make a very crazy romantic ship theory between Dany and Arya, their life stories and their psychological developments are so similar to each other .. it's almost hard not to say their fate is one. Jon and Arya have similar parallel events too. If we can say Jonerys, we can say JonArya, right? How many characters will Jon have a romantic relationship with? I hope I was able to explain what I mean?
I have read the pov of Jon and Dany many times. I could not see a FS that there would be a romantic relationship between these two. If something is going to happen between two important characters, we cannot say that GRRM does not mark it. He does that. When I read Sansa povs, many signs for SanSan are laid before me without the need for a search. Or Jonarya signs.
First of all, it is necessary to wait for an infrastructure for a love relationship. Foreshadowing sentences are a sign for events that will happen, but is there any meaning unless there is character and story development?
In his speech, Jon and Ygritte, we saw that Jon had no problem with his love affair with foster sibling if he had no blood ties. So have we seen Jon volunteer to have a relationship with his own aunt? No. He can never be comfortable with incest because he wasn't raised that way.
This could happen without Jon knowing his identity, you might think. Just like in the show ... Possible. But we know that Dany will come in the 7th book, and they will probably meet in the middle of the book at the earliest. If you especially believe that the 2nd Dance will be between Dany and Aegon, the other kind seems hard to me.
So I'm asking, when will Jon learn about his real identity? At the end of the book? It is not possible. He needs to learn either at the end of Book 6 or at the beginning of Book 7. For his other danger, Jon is the real weapon and leader ... His family history will be his strength and superiority in this war. That's why he needs to know. Lord Reed knows everything, he will warn and inform Jon about everything. So when Jon meets Dany, he will either have learned his identity or will learn soon after meeting. So it's hard to wait for Jon to have a romantic relationship with a Dany. Another issue is that when these two characters meet, there is no suitable environment and time to form a love relationship between the two. Others have come and war has begun, death is everywhere and will these two find time to fall in love? Will it be possible to develop a story in this way? How? This book is not written by D&D, so let's not expect a disgrace like the show's script.
Thank you for read(Sorry for may bad English).

Polyships and Threesomes
I have zero problems shipping the same character with more than one person. I’m a ship whore. For instance, I’m usually very drawn to Reverse Harems, stories in which many men are in love with a single woman.
So I made this list of my favorite love triangles. When I say there is a possible threesome is because the relationship between the characters is based on trust and deep friendship, so they might come to a agreement of sharing a bed. If they are underage, assume I’m talking about the future.
I’ll only be counting non-platonic examples. Friendship or fraternity not included, doe some ships are also heavily based on that, such as the first one on this list.

Book Haul
November 20, 2022
Tumblr media
So, I've gone to the bookstore three times in the last couple of weeks. The first time was after work where I bought three books. The second time was last weekend when my bestie/roomie went to pick up one she'd ordered, but I didn't get anything that time. And then I'd planned not to buy any more books this month, but ended up at a bookstore again yesterday anyway, and really splurged that time. 🙈
Tumblr media
These are the books I bought during my first visit:
The Martian by Andy Weir
I originally read this as an ebook back in 2015 and I've been wanting to get a physical copy of it for years now, but for some reason I put it off time and time again. But then, during this bookstore trip, I finally decided enough is enough, and I finally got it. 💪🏻 This book is one of my favorite books of all time and I'm really happy to have it on my physical shelf now. ✨️
Chain of Iron by Cassandra Clare
The Last Hours is one of the series in the Shadowhunters franchise I haven't read yet and since the covers are always beautiful, I of course wanted a physical copy of them. The bookstore I went to only had a copy of the second book, not the first, so I'll have to go back at some point to see if they have the first one in stock again. I'm still reading The Bane Chronicles, so it'll be a little while until I get to this trilogy, but for now, I'm happy to have it. 😋
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
I watched the movie for the first time several years ago and loved it, so of course I also want to read the book it's based on. This edition of it has a very charming cover, I think, so I'm excited to read it in the near future (though likely not before 2023). 💪🏻
Tumblr media
And this is the splurge I went on during my third bookstore visit 🙈:
The Demon in the Wood by Leigh Bardugo, illustrated by Dani Pendergast
I've been seeing this beautiful graphic novel prequel of the Shadow and Bone trilogy in bookstores for a while now and kept wanting to get it, but always ended up walking out without it, but not this time! 🤣 This time I got it and immediately read it when I got home, which you can read a little more about in my reading update for this week. 😇
Shadow and Bone / Siege and Storm / Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo
I got this one as a box set. Similar to The Martian, I've been wanting to get physical copies of the S&B trilogy for aaaages. While I have only read the first two books and still need to read the third, I love this world a lot and the conflict and dynamic between Alina and the Darkling. I'm really excited to finish the trilogy and see how it ends. 👀👌🏻 And the covers and the spines are so pretty! 💖
Six of Crows / Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
I started reading Six of Crows as an ebook after I watched the first season of the S&B show on Netflix because I really fell in love with the Crows in it. I have yet to finish it, my ADHD brain got distracted after a while, but I really enjoyed it so far and am looking forward to reading the rest of the book. 💪🏻
Tumblr media
And now I really need to take a book-buying break, this is getting out of hand. 🙈

Note
I think I've read the passage of the House of the Undying an thousand times by now but I don't get what they are hinting at. Who are the mounts and the treacherous people and so on... Any thoughts?
Ohh boy. The thing to remember about the House of the Undying prophecies is that, well, they’re prophecies. Some of them haven’t happened yet, so we can only make guesses. It’s likely that after the books are complete, we’ll be able to go through all of Dany’s storyline and match up all the passages, but for now, we might be right or we might be wrong.
Anyway. These are my theories, based on the events of the books so far, TWOW preview chapters, other people’s thoughts, and other general speculation:
Dany first sees visions when she enters the House of the Undying, behind the doors of the hall. The beautiful woman being ravaged by little men is Westeros during the War of the Five Kings; the feast of corpses is the Red Wedding; the house with the red door in Braavos is what it is; the old man on the Iron Throne is Aerys commanding his pyromancers to light the wildfire when he hears Robert’s army has come to King’s Landing; and the last room shows Rhaegar with Elia and newborn Aegon, saying that Aegon is the Prince that was Promised but deciding he needs another child (in addition to Rhaenys) because “the dragon has three heads”.
Then Dany enters the chamber of the Undying, and they proclaim various prophetic statements:
…mother of dragons… child of three… […] three heads has the dragon…
Dany is the mother of dragons and one of the three heads of the dragon (part of the prophecy of the Prince that was Promised), that’s a given. What “child of three” means we’re not sure yet – it could be that she was one of Aerys and Rhaella’s three surviving children, it could mean that she’s one of the three heads of the dragon, it could be related to how these prophecies are given in sets of three, it could mean something else.
mother of dragons… child of storm…
Daenerys Stormborn, born during a great storm that hit Dragonstone and wrecked the Targaryen fleet.
three fires must you light… one for life and one for death and one to love…
One for life: Drogo’s pyre, which birthed her dragons
One for death: uncertain – may be the fire that burned down the House of the Undying, may be the “dracarys” that freed the slaves of Astapor, may be something related to her potential interactions with the Dothraki and the dosh khaleen in TWOW, might be related to the King’s Landing wildfire theory, or something else
One to love: what a fire to love means is extremely confusing. I personally think it will be a fire that will guide her to her love, but it could be something else.
three mounts must you ride… one to bed and one to dread and one to love…
One to bed: her silver mare, that carried her to her wedding night with Drogo
One to dread: Drogon, probably. (Since he’s Balerion the Black Dread reborn, or that he is dangerous even to his mother, or both.)
One to love: ??? unknown. May be a mount that will carry to her to her love, may be a mount to be loved (in which case “mount” for all three may be metaphorical), we just don’t know yet.
three treasons will you know… once for blood and once for gold and once for love…
Once for blood: Mirri Maz Duur, probably
Once for gold: might be Jorah’s betrayal, might be the Second Sons’ betrayal, might be something in the future (Daario perhaps)
Once for love: Very confusing right now. But I feel that a treason for love is different from a treason of love – that is, not a lover betraying her. Also, the fact that this is a treason she will know – it may be Dany herself is the executor of this treason for love. Some connect this to Azor Ahai and Nissa Nissa, I say we can’t be sure, it’s something complex without the full context we need to understand it yet.
Then the Undying show Dany three sets of visions, each related to a certain theme. First theme:
Viserys screamed as the molten gold ran down his cheeks and filled his mouth.
His golden crown.
A tall lord with copper skin and silver-gold hair stood beneath the banner of a fiery stallion, a burning city behind him.
Rhaego conquering Westeros, a might-have-been. (Note Dany wasn’t by his side; perhaps if Rhaego had been born, she might have died instead?)
Rubies flew like drops of blood from the chest of a dying prince, and he sank to his knees in the water and with his last breath murmured a woman’s name…
Rhaegar, at the Trident.
mother of dragons, daughter of death…
This refers to the last three visions – Viserys, Rhaegar, and Rhaego had to die so that Dany could be the mother of dragons, could be queen in her own right.
Second theme:
Glowing like sunset, a red sword was raised in the hand of a blue-eyed king who cast no shadow.
Stannis.
A cloth dragon swayed on poles amidst a cheering crowd.
Aegon, the mummer’s dragon.
From a smoking tower, a great stone beast took wing, breathing shadow fire…
Unknown, almost certainly hasn’t happened yet. May be something Melisandre creates, as she does want to birth dragons from stone, and she makes shadow illusions and actual shadow creatures. May be related to something Euron does at the Hightower. We’ll just have to see.
mother of dragons, slayer of lies…
Again, referring to the last three visions – Dany must slay the lies that Stannis is Azor Ahai (she is), that Aegon is the Targaryen ruler of Westeros (nope, that’s her, he’s a Blackfyre), and whatever the lie is regarding the shadow dragon. (If it’s Melisandre’s creation, it’s probably regarding the prophecy that Azor Ahai Reborn would wake dragons from stone, because again, that’s Dany.)
Third theme:
Her silver was trotting through the grass, to a darkling stream beneath a sea of stars.
Dany’s wedding night with Drogo.
A corpse stood at the prow of a ship, eyes bright in his dead face, grey lips smiling sadly.
Uncertain. May be Hizdahr zo Loraq, dead and made the figurehead of Victarion’s ship (as Euron does to Aeron in his first TWOW chapter). May be a punning reference to a “grey joy”, either Euron or Victarion. (With Euron’s living figurehead thing being a metaphor for him by proxy.) We need TWOW before we can be sure, unfortunately.
A blue flower grew from a chink in a wall of ice, and filled the air with sweetness…
Jon Snow, the son of Lyanna Stark (given a crown of blue roses by Rhaegar), at the Wall.
mother of dragons, bride of fire…
The theme for these last three visions is Dany as a bride, so almost certainly these visions show her husbands. (That’s why the uncertainty with the second vision, as she did marry Hizdahr, but Euron and Victarion have both declared their pursuit of her and the willingness to kill anyone in their way.) And of course, the third vision is a major reason for the existence of the Jon/Dany ship amongst book readers, especially because of the “sweetness”, the suggestion that this marriage, at least, will be for love.
Then there’s a last series of visions, showing Dany where she came from, what she will become:
Shadows whirled and danced inside a tent, boneless and terrible.
Mirri Maz Duur’s tent, where she performed the ritual that saved Drogo’s life (but not his soul and mind) and killed Rhaego.
A little girl ran barefoot toward a big house with a red door.
Almost certainly little Dany in Braavos, but some wonder if this is a vision of the future, Dany’s own daughter.
Mirri Maz Duur shrieked in the flames, a dragon bursting from her brow.
The birth of Dany’s dragons (metaphorically).
Behind a silver horse the bloody corpse of a naked man bounced and dragged.
The wineseller who tried to assassinate Dany at Vaes Dothrak. (And the reason why Drogo decided to support her conquering Westeros, the reason he ended up in the battle where he took his deathly wound.)
A white lion ran through grass taller than a man.
This may be the hrakkar Drogo slew in the Dothraki Sea, whose pelt Dany now wears. Or it may be a metaphorical vision, referring to Tyrion (a lion of Lannister with white-blond hair, and a dwarf). We’ll just have to see.
Beneath the Mother of Mountains, a line of naked crones crept from a great lake and knelt shivering before her, their grey heads bowed.
Hasn’t happened yet, but will – after Dany is brought to Vaes Dothrak by the khalasar that finds her in the wilderness at the end of ADWD, something will happen (perhaps the fire for death), and the dosh khaleen will accept that she is truly the promised prince, the khal of khals, the Stallion Who Mounts the World.
Ten thousand slaves lifted bloodstained hands as she raced by on her silver, riding like the wind. “Mother!” they cried. “Mother, mother!”
The mhysa scene, after Dany frees the slaves of Yunkai.
And that’s it. Hope that helps!

Aegon VI Targaryen = Viserys
When she opened it, she found piles of the finest velvets and damasks the Free Cities could produce … and resting on top, nestled in the soft cloth, three huge eggs.  (...) Another was pale cream streaked with gold.
Hypothesis: Aegon VI Targaryen = Viserion
“The cream-and-gold I call Viserion. Viserys was cruel and weak and frightened, yet he was my brother still. His dragon will do what he could not.”
What Viserys couldn’t do? Be crowned as the Kng of the Seven Kingdoms. In the show, Aegon VI does not exist. However, Cersei was crowned as the Queen of the “Seven Kingdoms and she employs the golden company. It is likely that Cersei’s story was based on Aegon’s.
Tumblr media
Viserys was “crowned” though... a golden crown.
"You cannot touch me, I am the dragon, the dragon, and I will be crowned!"
Khal Drogo unfastened his belt. The medallions were pure gold, massive and ornate, each one as large as a man's hand. He shouted a command. Cook slaves pulled a heavy iron stew pot from the firepit, dumped the stew onto the ground, and returned the pot to the flames. Drogo tossed in the belt and watched without expression as the medallions turned red and began to lose their shape. She could see fires dancing in the onyx of his eyes. A slave handed him a pair of thick horsehair mittens, and he pulled them on, never so much as looking at the man.
Viserys began to scream the high, wordless scream of the coward facing death. He kicked and twisted, whimpered like a dog and wept like a child, but the Dothraki held him tight between them. (...)
When the gold was half-melted and starting to run, Drogo reached into the flames, snatched out the pot. "Crown!" he roared. "Here. A crown for Cart King!" And upended the pot over the head of the man who had been her brother.
The sound Viserys Targaryen made when that hideous iron helmet covered his face was like nothing human. His feet hammered a frantic beat against the dirt floor, slowed, stopped. Thick globs of molten gold dripped down onto his chest, setting the scarlet silk to smoldering … yet no drop of blood was spilled.
He was no dragon, Dany thought, curiously calm. Fire cannot kill a dragon.
Viserys is held down by the Dothraki preventing him from escape, while Drogo uphends the melted gold upon his head. Similarly, Cersei was held down in King’s Landing by the Dothraki preventing her from escape, while (Danerys upon) Drogon burned the castle upon her head.
Danerys usurps Viserys, despite him being the rightful king. More, she doesn’t believe Viserys is a true dragon because he was killed by fire.  It’s safe to assume she’ll justify her actions the same for Aegon. He burns with the rest, he’s no true dragon either.
Tumblr media
Its in the House of Undying prophecies as well...
three treasons will you know . . . once for blood and once for gold and once for love . . .(...) Her silver was trotting through the grass, to a darkling stream beneath a sea of stars. A corpse stood at the prow of a ship, eyes bright in his dead face, grey lips smiling sadly. A blue flower grew from a chink in a wall of ice, and filled the air with sweetness. . . . mother of dragons, bride of fire . . .
There’s the gold and there’s the corpse... but also, a bride of fire.
She had sensed the truth of it long ago, Dany thought as she took a step closer to the conflagration, but the brazier had not been hot enough. The flames writhed before her like the women who had danced at her wedding, whirling and singing and spinning their yellow and orange and crimson veils, fearsome to behold, yet lovely, so lovely, alive with heat. Dany opened her arms to them, her skin flushed and glowing. This is a wedding, too, she thought.
Danerys turns King’s Landing into Aegon’s funeral pyre. Evil.
Tumblr media
What else? All of Viserion’s mentions are listed below... and some of them fit what we saw in the show.
A Clash of Kings
“The cream-and-gold I call Viserion. Viserys was cruel and weak and frightened, yet he was my brother still. His dragon will do what he could not.” (ACOK ~ Danerys I)
As said, Aegon will be crowned King of the Seven Kingdoms, doing what Viserys could not. If show!Cersei took over book!Aegon’s role... this fits.
How long the city had been deserted she could not know, but the white walls, so beautiful from afar, were cracked and crumbling when seen up close. Inside was a maze of narrow crooked alleys. The buildings pressed close, their facades blank, chalky, windowless. Everything was white, as if the people who lived here had known nothing of color. They rode past heaps of sun-washed rubble where houses had fallen in, and elsewhere saw the faded scars of fire. At a place where six alleys came together, Dany passed an empty marble plinth. Dothraki had visited this place before, it would seem. Perhaps even now the missing statue stood among the other stolen gods in Vaes Dothrak. She might have ridden past it a hundred times, never knowing. On her shoulder, Viserion hissed. (ACOK ~ Danerys I)
Vaes Tolorro, the city of bones , a city sacked by Dothraki and that they think is filled with ghosts. Six alleys coming together at an empty marble plinth. A city beautiful from afar, cracked and and crumbling up close. Similarly, King’s Landing, the city of ashes, after Danerys and the Dothraki are finished sacking it. Six dragon roads coming together at the capital. A city that Danerys believes to be beatiful from afar, but she’ll reduce to ruins once she comes close. Fits.
She wondered whether Aegon's Red Keep had a pool like this, and fragrant gardens full of lavender and mint. It must, surely. Viserys always said the Seven Kingdoms were more beautiful than any other place in the world. The thought of home disquieted her. If her sun-and-stars had lived, he would have led his khalasar across the poison water and swept away her enemies, but his strength had left the world. Her bloodriders remained, sworn to her for life and skilled in slaughter, but only in the ways of the horselords. The Dothraki sacked cities and plundered kingdoms, they did not rule them. Dany had no wish to reduce King's Landing to a blackened ruin full of unquiet ghosts. (ACOK ~ Danerys I)
Not even subtle... Fits..
[Robert Baratheon] sent me poisoned wine, yet I live and he is gone. "What was the manner of his death?" On her shoulder, pale Viserion flapped wings the color of cream, stirring the air. (ACOK ~ Danerys II)
In the show, Varys tried to poison Danerys because she’s crazy. In the books, Varys is #TeamAegon. It’s likely Varys will try to poison her on his behalf. Fits, though the motive will most likely be another.
Tumblr media
Drogon was curled up beneath her arm, as hot as a stone that has soaked all day in the blazing sun. Rhaegal and Viserion were fighting over a scrap of meat, buffeting each other with their wings as smoke hissed from their nostrils. (ACOK ~ Danerys III)
Aegon and whoever stands in for Rhaegal (Jon), fighting over something. It’s likely they’ll fight over north / vale / riverlands. This happens while Drogon (Danerys) soaks beneath the sun (Slaver’s Bay, Volantis, you know the warm places, etc). Speculation for book only, most likely Jon and Aegon will naturally clash in TWOW / ADOS, while Danerys is terrorising beyond the narrow sea.
A STORM OF SWORDS
Rhaegal and Viserion were the size of small dogs, Drogon only a little larger, and any dog would have out-weighed them; they were all wings and neck and tail, lighter than they looked. And so Daenerys Targaryen must rely on wood and wind and canvas to bear her home. (ASOS ~ Danerys I)
Most likely, just an introduction. Could indicate Danerys’ forces will outmatch Jon and Aegon separately though. In the show, this fit for #TeamJon.
"Well, how long does a dragon live?" She looked up as Viserion swooped low over the ship, his wings beating slowly and stirring the limp sails. (ASOS ~ Danerys I)
A dragon lives until you kill them. A corpse stood at the prow of a ship, eyes bright in his dead face, grey lips smiling sadly.. Fits.
So I see.
"The warlocks in Qarth told you that you would be betrayed three times," the exile knight reminded her, as Viserion and Rhaegal began to snap and claw at each other. (ASOS ~ Danerys I)
Not even subtle. “three treasons will you know . . . once for blood and once for gold and once for love . . . (...) Her silver was trotting through the grass, to a darkling stream beneath a sea of stars. A corpse stood at the prow of a ship, eyes bright in his dead face, grey lips smiling sadly. A blue flower grew from a chink in a wall of ice, and filled the air with sweetness.
Aegon and Jon, fighting over something. It’s likely they’ll fight as a north  faction versus south faction. Either against each other for the land, or against Danerys to defend each of their factions. Either way, these must be the root of their betrayals. This is speculation for book only, for TWOW / ADOS.
Her sudden laughter made Drogon hiss, and sent Viserion flapping to his perch above the porthole. "The ploy worked well."
The exile knight did not return her smile. "These are Illyrio's ships, Illyrio's captains, Illyrio's sailors . . . and Strong Belwas and Arstan are his men as well, not yours." (ASOS ~ Danerys I)
Viserion turning away from Danerys, once he hears her laugh and Drogon hiss. Similarly, Aegon turned away from Danerys, once Tyrion implies that Danerys wouldn’t take him seriously because she’s more powerful than him (Drogon is bigger than his siblings, he bullies them often). So Aegon takes Illyrion’s ships, captains, sailors, what have you, they are his and not hers. Illyrio is invested in Aegon, not Danerys. Much later, we have this...
I know she is strong. How not? The Dothraki despise weakness. If Daenerys had been weak, she would have perished with Viserys. I know she is fierce. Astapor, Yunkai, and Meereen are proof enough of that. (...) Now, how do you suppose this queen will react when you turn up with your begging bowl in hand and say, 'Good morrow to you, Auntie. I am your nephew, Aegon, returned from the dead. I've been hiding on a poleboat all my life, but now I've washed the blue dye from my hair and I'd like a dragon, please … and oh, did I mention, my claim to the Iron Throne is stronger than your own?' "
Aegon's mouth twisted in fury. "I will not come to my aunt a beggar. I will come to her a kinsman, with an army."
"A small army." There, that's made him good and angry. The dwarf could not help but think of Joffrey. I have a gift for angering princes. "Queen Daenerys has a large one, and no thanks to you."
Aegon will not beg.... Viserys bristled. "Guard your tongue, Mormont, or I'll have it out. I am no lesser man, I am the rightful Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. The dragon does not beg." I’m not saying Aegon’s like Viserys. I’m saying Aegon is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. It is his by right, not hers. Fits.
Drogon raised his head and screamed, pale smoke venting from his nostrils, and Viserion flapped at her and tried to perch on her shoulder, as he had when he was smaller. "No," Dany said, trying to shrug him off gently.
"You're too big for that now, sweetling." But the dragon coiled his white and gold tail around one arm and dug black claws into the fabric of her sleeve, clinging tightly. Helpless, she sank into Groleo's great leather chair, giggling.  (ASOS ~ Danerys II)
Viserion’s behaviour is interesting. Might suggest Aegon tries to seek an alliance later after all. Speculation.
"They have been wild while you were gone, Khaleesi," Irri told her. "Viserion clawed splinters from the door, do you see? And Drogon made to escape when the slaver men came to see them. When I grabbed his tail to hold him back, he turned and bit me." She showed Dany the marks of his teeth on her hand.
"Did any of them try to burn their way free?" That was the thing that frightened Dany the most.
"No, Khaleesi. Drogon breathed his fire, but in the empty air. The slaver men feared to come near him." (ASOS ~ Danerys II)
Viserion tried to escape again. Fits.
"Remember. To go north, you must journey south. To reach the west, you must go east. To go forward you must go back, and to touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow.
"Quaithe?" Dany sprung from the bed and threw open the door. Pale yellow lantern light flooded the cabin, and Irri and Jhiqui sat up sleepily. "Khaleesi?" murmured Jhiqui, rubbing her eyes. Viserion woke and opened his jaws, and a puff of flame brightened even the darkest corners. There was no sign of a woman in a red lacquer mask. "Khaleesi, are you unwell?" asked Jhiqui.
"A dream." Dany shook her head. "I dreamed a dream, no more. Go back to sleep. All of us, go back to sleep." Yet try as she might, sleep would not come again. (ASOS ~ Danerys III)
No idea.
Drogon flew almost lazily at Kraznys, black wings beating. As he gave the slaver another taste of fire, Irri and Jhiqui unchained Viserion and Rhaegal, and suddenly there were three dragons in the air. (ASOS ~ Danerys III)
A three way battle  “the dragon has three heads”. The Dance of Dragons II.
"Yunkai will have war," Dany told Whitebeard inside the pavilion. Irri and Jhiqui had covered the floor with carpets while Missandei lit a stick of incense to sweeten the dusty air. Drogon and Rhaegal were asleep atop some cushions, curled about each other, but Viserion perched on the edge of her empty bath. "Missandei, what language will these Yunkai'i speak, Valyrian?" (ASOS ~ Danerys IV)
In this chapter, Danerys threatens Yunkai, the yellow city, whose thematic are a lot of betrayals for... yes, that’s right... gold. The Wise Masters try to bribe her, Danerys steals their gold, Daario kills his boss for beauty (but he’s a sellsword, they only care about gold, and accordingly he dresses in... gold!). There are betrayals... for gold.
Drogon and Rhaegal keep together (alliance) but Viserion breaks away and goes to perch on the edge of the empty bath. Considering what the show did to “Aegon” (Cersei) and considering this, it reminds me of the King’s Landing summit where they agree to fight the Others together but then Cersei breaks faith and never shows up north. Fits, somewhat.
Something similar may happen in the books. The three dragons call a cease fire, but then Aegon shows them the middle finger and conquers King’s Landing (the empty bath) instead. Interestingly, the bath is empty, suggesting there’s nobody in power (maybe the Lannisters / Tyrells finally defeat each other and Aegon seizes the opportunity). Would fit perfectly. Aegon “betrays” for a gold, the golden crown of the Seven Kingdoms (Joff and Tommen’s crown is gold).
Tumblr media
"Wise?" Dany sat crosslegged on a cushion, and Viserion spread his white-and-gold wings and flapped to her side. "We shall see how wise they are," she said as she scratched the dragon's scaly head behind the horns. (ASOS ~ Danerys IV)
This is all in the same “betrayal for gold” chapter, so it’s interesting. Maybe after that trolling, Aegon attempts a new alliance. After all...
Griff put a black-gloved hand upon Prince Aegon's shoulder. "Spoken boldly," he said, "but think what you are saying."
"I have," the lad insisted. "Why should I go running to my aunt as if I were a beggar? My claim is better than her own. Let her come to me … in Westeros."
Aegon grows bold, just like the dragons grow bold (this word is used) when they’re chained in the pits, and refuses to be beg. A dragon does not beg.
"When all the slaves have departed, you will open your gates and allow my Unsullied to enter and search your city, to make certain none remain in bondage. If you do this, Yunkai will not be burned or plundered, and none of your people shall be molested. The Wise Masters will have the peace they desire, and will have proved themselves wise indeed. What say you?"
"I say, you are mad."
"Am I?" Dany shrugged, and said, "Dracarys."
The dragons answered. Rhaegal hissed and smoked, Viserion snapped, and Drogon spat swirling red-black flame. It touched the drape of Grazdan's tokar, and the silk caught in half a heartbeat. Golden marks spilled across the carpets as the envoy stumbled over the chest, shouting curses and beating at his arm until Whitebeard flung a flagon of water over him to douse the flames. "You swore I should have safe conduct!" the Yunkish envoy wailed.
The dragons go cray cray at Daniella’s “madness”. Maybe they rebel against her once she threatens to burn King’s Landing, unless Aegon surrenders. Speculation, but somewhat fits (Jon shanked her when she burned KL).
There’s something here for sure though, Danerys behaved abhorrently here with the Yunkai masters and at the show’s rendition of the dragonpit, trying the same dragon intimidating tactics and breaking safe conduct.
Daario upended the sack, and the heads of Sallor the Bald and Prendahl na Ghezn spilled out upon her carpets. "My gifts to the dragon queen."
Viserion sniffed the blood leaking from Prendahl's neck, and let loose a gout of flame that took the dead man full in the face, blackening and blistering his bloodless cheeks. Drogon and Rhaegal stirred at the smell of roasted meat.
"You did this?" Dany asked queasily. (ASOS ~ Danerys IV)
Daario IS NOT a precious cinnamon roll in search for love. Danerys is stupid.
Her captains bowed and left her with her handmaids and her dragons. But as Brown Ben was leaving, Viserion spread his pale white wings and flapped lazily at his head. One of the wings buffeted the sellsword in his face. The white dragon landed awkwardly with one foot on the man's head and one on his shoulder, shrieked, and flew off again. "He likes you, Ben," said Dany.
"And well he might." Brown Ben laughed. "I have me a drop of the dragon blood myself, you know." (ASOS ~ Danerys V)
Ben is a sellsword who betrays Danerys for... gold!, then reveals that he never betrayed her. Yeah right, LOOOL. As I said, Aegon might seek an alliance later, so Ben’s twice turncloak might alude to that. Would fit that scenario.
I was going to take you home! Her dragons sensed her fury. Viserion roared, and smoke rose grey from his snout. Drogon beat the air with black wings, and Rhaegal twisted his head back and belched flame. I should say the word and burn the two of them. Was there no one she could trust, no one to keep her safe? "Are all the knights of Westeros so false as you two? Get out, before my dragons roast you both. What does roast liar smell like? As foul as Brown Ben's sewers? Go!"   (ASOS ~ Danerys V)
Dance of Dragons II. Seems to suggest the Jon and Aegon take arms against Danerys once she shows her true bitch colours. Again, suggested before.
There was no sign of Viserion, but when she went to the parapet and scanned the horizon she saw pale wings in the far distance, sweeping above the river. He is hunting. They grow bolder every day. Yet it still made her anxious when they flew too far away. One day one of them may not return, she thought.    (ASOS ~ Danerys VI)
Viserion running away from Danerys. Aegon turned away from Danerys once he grew bolder (a good word to use). Fits.
A DANCE OF DRAGONS
Viserion sensed her disquiet. The white dragon lay coiled around a pear tree, his head resting on his tail. When Dany passed his eyes came open, two pools of molten gold. His horns were gold as well, and the scales that ran down his back from head to tail. "You're lazy," she told him, scratching under his jaw. His scales were hot to the touch, like armor left too long in the sun. Dragons are fire made flesh. She had read that in one of the books Ser Jorah had given her as a wedding gift. "You should be hunting with your brothers. Have you and Drogon been fighting again?" Her dragons were growing wild of late. Rhaegal had snapped at Irri, and Viserion had set Reznak's tokar ablaze the last time the seneschal had called. I have left them too much to themselves, but where am I to find the time for them?
Viserion's tail lashed sideways, thumping the trunk of the tree so hard that a pear came tumbling down to land at Dany's feet. His wings unfolded, and he half flew, half hopped onto the parapet. He grows, she thought as he launched himself into the sky. (...) She watched Viserion climb in widening circles until he was lost to sight beyond the muddy waters of the Skahazadhan. (ADWD ~ Danerys I)
Fits. Bye bitch. The Martells send their regards.
Dany did not want to talk about the dragons. (...) Down in the pit, Viserion had snapped one of his chains; he and Rhaegal grew more savage every day. Once the iron doors had glowed red-hot, her Unsullied told her, and no one dared to touch them for a day. (ADWD ~ Danerys IV)
The dragons craned their necks around, gazing at them with burning eyes. Viserion had shattered one chain and melted the others. He clung to the roof of the pit like some huge white bat, his claws dug deep into the burnt and crumbling bricks. (ADWD ~ Danerys VIII)
Viserion running away from Danerys’ shackles, likewise Aegon turning away from Danerys’ entrapments and going his own way. Fits.
"The white one is Viserion, the green is Rhaegal. I named them for my brothers." Her voice echoed off the scorched stone walls. It sounded small—a girl's voice, not the voice of a queen and conqueror, nor the glad voice of a new-made bride.
Rhaegal roared in answer, and fire filled the pit, a spear of red and yellow. Viserion replied, his own flames gold and orange. When he flapped his wings, a cloud of grey ash filled the air. Broken chains clanked and clattered about his legs. Quentyn Martell jumped back a foot.
A crueler woman might have laughed at him, but Dany squeezed his hand and said, "They frighten me as well. There is no shame in that. My children have grown wild and angry in the dark."  (...)
They’re not fans of Danerys anymore, not even “sweet” Viserion (he’s the nicest of the three dragons). Rhaegal especially never was, since he’s been biting her hand since before he could fly. Hopefully, they have become fans of each other. Me wants some quality time between the dragon bros, complaining about their shitty father mother.
"All I know of dragons is what my brother told me when I was a girl, and some I read in books, but it is said that even Aegon the Conqueror never dared mount Vhagar or Meraxes, nor did his sisters ride Balerion the Black Dread. Dragons live longer than men, some for hundreds of years, so Balerion had other riders after Aegon died … but no rider ever flew two dragons."
Viserion hissed again. Smoke rose between his teeth, and deep down in his throat they could see gold fire churning.
"They are … they are fearsome creatures."
No idea. Reminds me of that dumb cliff talk in the show tho. Instead of Quentyn being afraid and (later) being killed by Rhaegal, Jon was brave to pet the lizard.
I leave outside this post Barristan’s and Quentyn’s chapters, which have a lot of description. They’re basically about Viserion and Rhaegal breaking free. Of note, Viserion tries to run away from Quentyn (he just wants to be free :<) and Rhaegal kills Quentyn after he raises the leash against his brother (oooh).
