Kep unexpectedly got a chance to score himself an A+ grade in Being A Collie tonight!
I let the dogs out for the last potty and suddenly Keps tearing off after whatā€™s obviously a rabbit he startled. Now my yard is the ONLY one on our street thatā€™s fenced but rabbits just fucking love to dig in under the gate and fuck up my flower garden, so I hate them. And this rabbit is clearly so panicked it forgot where it came in, because itā€™s racing in laps around the yard and slamming into the fence to try and escape. This goes on for a good 1-2 minutes and Kep is tailing this thing like a gd coursing hound, he is INTENT (Stellina also chased but visibly lost interest halfway through once the rabbit kept repeating its laps). And then finally the rabbit just freezes in some brush along the back fence in sheer panic/exhaustionā€¦ and Kep just stands there, looming over it, muzzle punching it. Not biting, not pawing. Just ā€œhey, move.ā€ now I donā€™t particularly care what happens to this rabbit but Iā€™m also not the kind of asshole who letā€™s my pets torment wildlife so after it clearly wasnā€™t going to move anymore I picked up Kep and carried him back to the house, which he was quite miffed about. Hopefully bunny catches its breath and remembers how to leave the yard overnight.
but I am proud of Kep, because that was exactly what a collie should have done! Herding drive = prey drive, the only difference is that in herding dogs their drive is modified to be fully stalk-chase and no catch-kill (as compared to a dog like a greyhound, whose drive is (CHASE-catch-kill). But a herding dog who bloodies the livestock is useless, so thatā€™s bred away from. Maybe he would try to bite if he were older, or if it was a rat or mouse as opposed to a (comparatively) large rabbit. But he showed excellent collie instincts and I definitely need to test him on sheep once heā€™s a bit older.

tales of the passerine retcon -- did i say danny broke his ankle from the fall? I mean his leg. He broke his leg. And injured his shoulder. probably bruised a few ribs.

I have new neighbors and today they were out in their yard (the youngest kid saw a cool bug) and their little dog was offleash so I got to meet neighbor dog! Neighbor dog is my new favorite
#the person behind the yarn#neighbor dog is small and has curly fur and tiny little corgi-esque legs#and her tail is so fluffy it drags on the ground when it's down#but she mostly walks around with her tail up and waving like a flag#absolutely adorable! I sat on the ground to greet her (to be less intimidating)#and once I passed the sniff check and she'd greeted my dad and brother too#she came back to me and flopped against my legs for more pets#I am delighted to meet her and hope I will see her again in the near future#and since she's an offleash dog and my yard is not really fenced between my house and my neighbor's#I'm sure I will lol#I do not understand offleash dogs? like. fundamentally don't get it#but also none of my childhood dogs were recall trained#and my main two dogs in childhood were A. a runner. wanted to run more than anything. if the door was open he'd run and run and run#not to get away he just really liked running#and B. my dear Wolfie who had the common sense of a block of concrete#we could not let that dog offleash because he would get lost inside the house#he got stuck up a tree once (only like a foot off the ground)#he was the size of a sort of large rabbit (another reason not to be offleash)#so he was offleash in our fenced in yard but only supervised#either by a human or by our other dog (who was both smart and scary enough to scare away other animals)#okay I guess I had three childhood dogs? I think we got Lilly when I was an adult though#Lilly could not be an offleash dog because she had an EXTREMELY high prey drive. she was a hunting dog#she was also Wolfie's bodyguard

pet peeve is when a story tells us something is aberrant, but it seems to matter more about who does the behavior than the behavior itself. rorschach in snyder's watchmen isn't going too far; we watch nite owl and silk spectre ii snap necks and arms with gleeful, loving abandon, in slow motion no less, while they lecture the audience about rorschach's violence. heroes frequently torture the plot contrivance out of a villain and then moralize to the camera when the villains do the same. indominus rex's killing spree doesn't shock or appall me; all the jurassic world dinosaurs act like mindless killing machines, and the camera lingers, rapturous, on their cruelty. it's not an outlier. there's nothing interesting about it beyond as a set piece.
in a better script, the indominus rex would have had pathos; a chimera made for entertainment, for profit, stitched together with no regard for itself and placed in a lonely box. a freak among freaks. of course it would be mad. but the film wasn't interested in it as an animal, or a character, only as a moving piece of scenery for people to scream at or breathe tensely while it can clearly smell and reach them but doesn't, because it isn't a character and doesn't have motivations.
it's just sort of boring, i suppose. it tries like all other empty drab things do to cover it with bombast and roaring and soaring brassy scores but it's just sort of dull. a sprawl of nothing.
conversely peele's nope is a transcendent monster movie, imo, because it thinks about the the whys and hows, how jean jacket perceives the world, how the world perceives her, and lets that shape the narrative as much as jupe or emerald or gordy. they consulted biologists and behaviorists, digging into the meat of it. the creature as a camera as an animal as a device. nope has layers. it takes its own insane premise seriously, and has something to say, and is a goddamn good movie. i forgot where i was going with this.
#always rattling that quote from peele about the difference between horror and comedy being a matter of timing#creature horror is my favorite horror and most of it is Bad but i love it. sometimes you strike genuine gold and other times. well.#drives me crazy when monsters behave only in ways meant to be scary rather than how a real living thing would act. you can do both.#i remember hearing about a woman attacked by a moose in her own back yard. it gored and stomped her then left back into the woods#a few minutes later as she tried to crawl away it came back and attacked her again. terrifying! for no purpose!#a prey animal attack is often more frightening and vicious than a predator's imo#because to be eaten -- that carries its own logic. a prey animal though holds fear and rage and desperation in the core of it. it Knows.#a lion is a simple creature compared to a beef bull who just managed to corner the farmer against the fence#unlike say movie monsters continuing to chase and kill and attack while a volcano goes off around them and literally burns them to death#don't get me started on the icy swimming feathered raptor#also the goddamn dimetrodon in the caves like. i have never seen a beast less suited for a goddamn cave. why is it acting like that.#the book jurassic park goes into the behaviors and dynamics and such of the dinosaurs and what it means that we made them and why#using the cutting edge of science to craft both story and its monsters#but the franchise is dreadfully incurious#as many franchises end up being in the end#frog croaks#i guess i wanted to complain about the jurassic world franchise specifically actually#i haven't read crichton since high school. maybe i should revisit and see if my opinion holds lol

I've finally finally just gotten around to putting casters on the bookshelf in front of my basement room's egress window so it can easily be moved aside, with the theoretical intention of being able to clamber in and out to hang out in the yard whenever I feel like it, and right now I have a step ladder in here to that end but god if I thought I could manage something structurally sound enough to hold my weight it'd fucking rule if, when you moved the bookshelf, a hidden stairway unfolded out from the wall behind it

well absolutely fucked up my first attempt at bringing the cats outside in harnesses/leashes! it's much harder to introduce two of them to the concept than one. anyway no one escaped at least and we will try this much more slowly and one at a time. it was very traumatic, though.

We had to put him down this morning. His health was getting too bad and I couldnā€™t stand the idea of him suffering.
itā€™s just crazy to think I donā€™t really have puppy pictures of him because we got him before we even had cell phones. I picked him because all the other puppies had cute little shirts on and when I asked why he didnā€™t, the guy giving him to us said he was too rowdy and was a wiggly little fighter and I was so charmed by that. He had so much personality and would wake me up at ungodly hours in the morning for our walks. But like, he gave me a reason to get outside and see the sunrise everyday. I hope I took even half as much care of him as he did for me. Love you forever, fuzzy ā¤ļø
#I feel so sad but Iā€™m so grateful to have had this long. 15 almost 16 years is crazy#the grief will be forever but so will the love#animal death#fuzzy#animals#dog#sanchoyorambles#ive known it was coming but I donā€™t think any amount of time or knowing could really make it hurt less. itā€™ll just take time#he was safe and I hope he wasnā€™t scared#I did what I could to make him feel comfortable but it never feels like enough I wish I couldā€™ve done more I wish he couldā€™ve lived forever#I know itā€™s selfish but I wanted more time with him. I wish I couldā€™ve got him a house with a big fenced in yard.#and always have fed him home cooked meals and spoiled him even more#not just any crusty little white dog. MY beloved crusty little white dog#he got along with cats better than other dogs and used to bark at even the WORD squirrel before he lost his hearing#he was so silly and Iā€™m going to miss him so so much#I wish we couldā€™ve seen a million more sunrises together buddy#itā€™s so quiet without him I donā€™t know what to do with myself#making this as an online memorial. but I did make him a shadow box with his collar and leash and paw prints and pictures and his#adoption papers and everything and his grave is going to be marked with a cute engraved thing itā€™s just not here yet#Iā€™ll never love a dog so much again man I canā€™t handle this#but I want something online to look back on#I want people to know he was great and I love him and Iā€™ll always love my baby#Iā€™ve been trying to distract myself but god. ow
