I don’t even know what the hell to do now because I had been with this place for so long and I got nothing but glowing performance reviews (including today! was literally told “we love you and you’ve been amazing but your position is now dissolved”) so this has just really knocked the wind out of me. I know they said a bunch more stuff about like my insurance and 401k and such but I was like completely dissociated most of the call and do not remember like at all. I think they’re emailing it to me.
it doesn’t help that this was also an incredibly niche, nice job in an industry that historically pays very poorly so my odds of finding something like it again are slim to none. and I’m also losing my vet care discount which fucking sucks.
they are giving me a 1-month severance at least which dgmw is NOT appropriate for a 7+ year tenure but it’s better than nothing. and I did file for unemployment. But I’m so so nervous about what happens now. I liked my job. I liked working remote. I liked my coworkers and my friends. I don’t know what is out there or what’s realistic. I don’t know what’s possible. I’m so tired and mad. I just want to take a week off but I know that’s dumb strategically but I’m so fucking tired.

Coila Snowdrift, owned by Clive H. Owen, Minneapolis, Minn. 1906
"His sire, Coila Laddie, is one of the best Collies in Canada, being the sire of many winners, and his grandsire on both sides is the famous white winner, Knight Errant II. His dam, Coila Kelpie, and granddam, Wishaw May, are also well known winners. Coila Snowdrift is a very large, rangy dog, with a beautiful eleven inch head, and a very heavy coat."
#old timey white collies can be really wild looking#if you’re at all interested I strongly recommend reading gayle Kaye’s writing on white collies (you can find it online)#peak purebred dog bullshittery#(said both exasperatedly and fondly)

i saw two rough collies today on my drive and went omg just like weewa and keppy.... because your dogs are celebrities to me
last weekend I took the dogs on a hiking trail and someone came around a corner that ALSO had two rough collies (a tri boy and sable girl) and we were both just like 🫵 SAME DOG
#hey if u drive around New England your odds of seeing a wild weewa and keppy are low#but never zero

its killing me tbh because i knowww I would be a good dog owner and Ive done Extensive research on care and training but I dont have a car and work from home isnt an option for me so its constant feedback everywhere I look that it would be Literal Animal Abuse to get a dog. ugh
yeah that’s such a shitty position to be in :/ if you’re struggling to find a rescue or breeder to work with, in my experience city animal control/pounds are normally much more forgiving to adopt from bc their main priority is just getting the animals out of their facility. or you can always do a private rehome as well! but if you just mean that the general consensus is the problem then yeah I get that.
my go-to reassurance anytime I have to do something that I’m nervous at failing at or don’t think I’m good enough is to remember that people far dumber than me have done this successfully. there’s plenty of idiots out there that still raise great dogs, therefore I will be fine. probably not the most mental-health friendly way of looking at it, but, it’s worked so far.
#I think it’s very reasonable/recommended to wait for your life to get more stable before getting an animal#depending on the circumstances#but it also gets to a point where it’s like. well if I can provide 95% of what is needed is it even worth trying to do 100% yk#don’t listen to me I’m just some guy

its weird being a dog groomer who works at a crate & rotate salon because we'll have dogs who are like a little anxious in the kennel whos owners act like the dog is lterally being tortured and killed. shes not even baking that much its ok. chill
I think a lot of ppl (myself included!) forget that it’s not only normal, but honestly healthy for dogs to feel “bad” feelings like boredom or discomfort, bc they need to learn how to process that and self-soothe. like a dog being a little restless and whining in a kennel is fine (as long as it doesn’t escalate, obviously), they can figure out how to deal with that. life will move on.
actually the last time Kep got groomed after they had finished and crated him, they texted me like “hey you need to come pick your dog up right now he’s barking like crazy” so I was like shit ok and started heading over and then they texted me 5 minutes later to say “nvm he’s fine now he got bored and went to sleep” 😅 but like, that’s because he KNOWS that he can have a tantrum all he wants and he’s going to have to deal with it. so he goes GRAAHHHH HATE THIS and then moves on.
#reminds me of my first vet job#I took history on a cat in the room and then I was like ‘ok I’ll bring her back to do her nail trim’ and picked her up#and the cat made the tiniest little ‘mrrf’ sound of ‘im a mildly annoyed cat’#and the owner immediately GASPED and fled out of the room saying I CANT WATCH THIS#and I was just left holding the cat like 🧍♀️

the whole "never leave your puppy alone" attitude also really really hurts the dog. so many people now refuse to even crate train because 'it will cry and be upset!' - your dog is going to have the worst separation anxiety and also freak out at the vets and groomers, congrats! also i hope you like never sleeping soundly again.
I fully admit I’m throwing stones in a glass house bc my first dog, Boone, refused to be crated and would lose his shit no matter what I tried so I gave up. and it SUCKED. he was literally so stressed out by being in a kennel at the vet that multiple doctors thought he was going into heart failure! after him I swore that all of my pets would be crate trained and so far with the other dogs it’s been nothing but beneficial. never again.
#it helps that the puppies are also from good breeders and didn’t have a chance to develop separation anxiety#since for some dogs they will get that no matter what. so I do get it.#but man if you have the CHANCE. you gotta.#even if you hate crates and never use them your dog needs to AT LEAST be able to tolerate being in one#for emergency travel or emergency vet care#it’s so important#Stellina liked crates immediately. Kep took a much longer time to train but he’s great now
