Day 3: Prayer
“You didn’t pray,” she said the moment they left the Grand Palace’s chapel behind and she could be reasonably sure that no-one was deliberately eavesdropping on them. It was an unforeseen and unfortunate consequence of being the Sun Summoner: as technically part of the court, she was expected to attend service every Sunday morning. She hated it with every fiber of her being, but at least she had Aleksander with her most of the time. “When the Apparat told everyone to pray, you didn’t.”
The arm that held hers stiffened momentarily, but then he shot her a mock-accusing glance, a hint of a smile hiding at the corner of his mouth. “If you noticed that, it means you weren’t praying either.”
She tried not to make a face. “They made us go to church twice a week at the orphanage, and Any Kuya, the matron, she watched us like a hawk to make sure we behaved appropriately—and she did not spare the rod when she thought we didn’t. I think I’ve prayed enough for a lifetime.”
The corners of his eyes crinkled. “Well, I’ve lived a fair bit more than you have. If you’ve had enough prayer for a lifetime, then what about me?” Despite his teasing tone, she winced, and was just about to concede to defeat when he spoke again. “I don’t put much value into the kind of prayers the Apparat expects and the court practices, the kind with carefully memorized wording and intonation, but little meaning. And I’ve been around for long enough to understand that any master, let them be worldly or divine, that demands such a mindless worship deserves no devotion.”
It was blasphemy, plain and simple, a sin much greater in the eyes of the church than her own indifference, but she did not call him out on that. Instead she asked, “But you do pray?”
“I do.”
The logical, the dangerous, question at the point would have been To whom?, because he clearly did not pray to the saints, but instead she asked, “How?”
He did not answer right away.
“I think that real prayer, honest prayer, comes from the heart. It does not necessarily include words—it’s more of a feeling. It’s standing with your face to the sun, and letting the gratitude fill you, because, by the grace of some unseen force, you are there to feel it.”
She thought about his words for a moment. “You know what?” she said, pulling just close enough to him that it was on the verge of being indecent. “I think I, too, prefer that kind of prayer to the Apparat’s droning.”

REVERSED: imbalance, disharmony, misalignment, indecision, conflict
When The Lovers card appears, it foretells a deep bond between two people, two opposing forces that together could create balance. Remember that true love and harmony come from embracing all parts of yourself and others. Can you put aside pettiness and strife to become bigger than the sum of your parts?
