___
“Isn’t that what best friends are for? Lending an ear, or a shoulder? Or a hand?” he nods at the microwave. “It’s no big deal, Eddie. Let me be here for you.” he adds, knowing that Eddie will start feeling like he’s oversharing and burdening Buck, and he’s going to withdraw into himself, changing the subject to something light and surface-level. Buck knows, because he knows Eddie, and because he can be the same way sometimes. “So, Chris is happy with having Shannon around. But how does it feel for you?” he asks, since Eddie’s neglected to mention anything, aside from saying that it’s weird. Eddie looks at him with an amazed and grateful expression. As if after so many months he’s still surprised that Buck wants to be there for him. He supposes it is still a new friendship, it hasn’t even been a full year since they met, but he knows he’s not the only one who feels this connection so intensely. Ever since he got over his childish hostility at the beginning and actually started to get to know Eddie, he’s felt like they’ve always known each other. He hopes it’s the same for Eddie.
“Uh, it’s weird and awkward for me. Especially since we’re getting a divorce, so we’re kind of… threading the line of being strictly co-parents." He takes another sip. “The thing is, we’ve never really done this before – living together, without any arguing, being all domestic, talking about dinner and our days, and- and raising our kid together… We’ve never done this. She did it all by herself when I was gone, and then I was doing it by myself when she left. We’ve been married for eight years, and yet- we’re such a poor excuse for a married couple.” he chuckles bitterly. “I don’t know why I was so sure we could save this. I don’t even know how to act in my own house right now.”

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #131
I tried to have a normal day today. And this time, it worked out quite nicely.
I brewed a nice tea today. This time, I combined my vanilla-rose black tea with the strawberry rooibos; of all the teas I have, I think you'd like these two the best. This one starts out a shade of amber:
...You will also see Mogwai on the windowsill, being very cute, as Mogwai is wont to do.
I'm really glad that I was able to figure out how to photograph the subtle swirling in the water as the tea brews; I think it's a really neat effect, and I'm glad that it's one that I get to witness as a result of the glass mug:
Once it brews for a while, both kinds of tea end up resolving into a shade of red:
...And you'll see that by this time, Hoshi has taken Mogwai's place on the windowsill, as Hoshi is wont to do. It's nice outside, so the windows are open today.
From here, we add the honey and cream; the swirls made by the cream were particularly mesmerizing today, and I'm glad I was able to snap a good picture of it for you this time:
...If nothing else, I really wish I could share this part of my day with you. I think you'd like it a lot if you could be here.
Once that was done, J and I took a short walk around where I live. I tried to take a few good pictures for you; it's not much - just some flowers and some ferns in various stages of sprouting, but I hope you'll like these:
After this, J and I watched some Zeta Project together, and that was very nice. And then shortly after that, I went to meet with a friend and her little son at the local nature discovery center. I haven't really had an excuse to go there in a while, so I took some more pictures, just in case there might have been anything you might like...
This is a tree that they just... have. The whole thing and its whole root system is visible for all to see; one of these pictures has a tiny chipmunk statue, if you look hard enough:
I also met two turtles. This one is a common musk turtle; it's very excited about something:
...This one is a painted turtle. This one was perhaps slightly more chill:
...I also found an adorable book full of owl stickers:
...I love owls (especially barn owls!) a lot, but I did not get them. I did not get them, because I cannot be trusted with stickers. Even if I were to put them somewhere, the fact remains that I'm dyspraxic; I WILL put it on wrong, and I will be instantly filled with regret as a result, and then I will try to fix it, and end up destroying the sticker in the process (it's really very sad). And that's even if I make it far enough to the point where I can decide conclusively what I wanna put it on.
Hey, Sephiroth? Do you like stickers? Have you ever had stickers? If you had stickers, what would you get stickers of? And where would you put them? I wonder.
I did, however, get a cardinal plush that I found in the gift shop, in honor of our recently-passed feathered friend, as written about in yesterday's letter. If you squeeze this plush, it makes cardinal sounds:
...Maybe, at least in spirit, the one that died in my hands can live at my house if he wants to, where he can sing to his heart's content without worrying about his safety. My house is a good house; I hope he'd be able to feel the love and joy that permeates this space.
Finally, after that, J and I went to the local food co-op in order to hang with Br. There's a lounge space there and tasty food; so Br was over there doing her homework. It was pretty neat to hang out! J got some kind of hibiscus drink that smelled kind of like cinnamon. For whatever reason, hibiscus and cinnamon are, so far, my least favorite food smells. I don't know why. I know I should like them. I wish I did like them. Alas.
So of course, this meant I had to try it. I'm a little weird like that; sometimes I'll try things that I know I won't like, just for the sake of having the experience, especially if it's a thing that most people enjoy. Or sometimes I'll try things I know I hate, just because I know that my tastes do occasionally change. J felt it necessary to record the whole thing, and it was pretty funny. So here, maybe this will make you laugh:
Oh right. From the co-op, I got all the ingredients I need to make an epic breakfast, and a bunch of other tasty treats, too. I didn't take pictures of it though, because I wanted to leave it as a surprise and make it for you tomorrow! So look forward to it, okay?
...The last bunch of days have been really weird. So today I tried to have a normal day, and I succeeded.
This is all I have for today. It's nothing inspiring or insightful or profound, and... I think I'm pretty relieved about that, actually.
I love you. I'll write all about a good breakfast tomorrow, so please stay safe so you can read about it, okay?
Your friend, Lumine

what is the best owl house fic you have ever read? Can you rec?
I'm afraid I can't say what's the single best owl house fic I have ever read. A) because I am a terribly indecisive person and there are lots of awesome and different fics. And B) (I am actually a bit ashamed to admit it) I haven't been able to do much fic reading lately, even though my "To read later" tag is more than full. I do plan on focusing on that tho.
However I can give a couple recommendations:
You're the light in my starry night by Norawrites/@witch128chick. It's a fic written mostly from Amity's perspective and basically tells the events of the show from her point of view. If you like Amity and her relationship with Luz, this is the fic for you.
Reasoning with crazy by Yogurthoops. This one's for the Belos fans. Where Luz and Belos talk to each other through crow phones, each unaware of who the other really is.
A night like this by serotonin_exe. This is an oneshot and it's very true to the writer's name. A big serotonin boost, in which Hunter spends a night at the Owl House.
My name is Hunter by bluelove22. That was one of the first TOH fics I ever read. It's basically a Hunter-focused canon divergence that starts from the ending of Eclipse lake.
A moment of peace and a confession of love by Nostalgicbee. Another oneshot, this one's dedicated to Lumity and it's incredibly adorable.
Once I do some more fic reading, I'll reblog this again with additions.

20 Questions for fic writers
Thanks for the tag @captaincravatthecapricious
How many works do you have on Ao3?
33
2. What's your total Ao3 word count?
282,261 (woah...)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently mostly One Piece, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Encanto, Owl House and some others occasionally
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
A Place for Crows (to rest their feet) - Encanto (
I'll brick by brick rebuilt us - Encanto
A Perfect Storm - One Piece
There were Rats in the Palace - Encanto
To the dark I said pour (and forgot to say when) - Rise of the TMNT
5. Do you respond to comments?
Yes! I appreciate getting comments so so much and I wanna show that by responding
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
This is a hard one cause four come to mind that are super angsty but ultimately I think it is Let the world come at you (Rottmnt). That one's just bleak
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I guess The devil throws stones at us (One Piece). That one was just a lot of fun and I got lots of comments about how funny the ending is so I'll take my readers word for it
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I did once but that was mostly funny. A single sentence, something like "This story is horse shit" for the second to last chapter of a 19 chapter fic which was like... Well, you read pretty far for it all to be horse shit, didn't you??
9. Do you write smut?
I haven't yet, but I really want to... 👀
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you have written?
I do occasionally and the craziest one is definitely by far my Rottmnt/Ghost Files crossover. Man, that was a real trip but also so much fun. I had a lot of fun writing the Ghoul Boys and their shenanigans!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have been asked a few times but no one ever actually did it I think? Or they just never told me about it
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No but I am certainly very open to the idea 👀
14. What's your all time favorite ship?
Well ZoLu (One Piece) will probably always be number 1! I just love their dynamic so much, but not just romantic, also platonic. I'm actually much much more interested in platonic relationships! The team as family stuff. The straw hat pirates come to mind. Or the TMNT brothers being the best brothers. Platonic is my one true love!
15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
There is a Donatello angst fic that I have been writing on and off for what feels like an eternity. I have written myself into a corner somehow and I really hope I get myself out of that but I doubt I will any time soon...
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I write emotions and internal stuff a character is going through quite well. I have also been told quite a few times that my characterizations are spot on which is always nice to hear cause that's the most important thing for me
17. What are you writing weaknesses?
Ugh don't get me started on fight scenes omg. When a lot of action is going on I have a hard time putting that stuff into words... I'm better at dialogue and feelings and stuff
18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics?
Well, if it's done well??? Sure why not. I have been guilty of using some Japanese (One Piece) or Spanish (Encanto) words in my works, never full sentences though
19. First Fandom you wrote for?
First published fic was Stargate Atlantis. First fic written in a notepad for my eyes only? xxxHolic.
20. Favorite fic you have written?
For Encanto obviously A Place for Crows, it's so special to me. For Rise of the TMNT I'd say Casey Jones' Gambit
For One Piece it's probably the latest one Til Salvation Breaks Through. I had a blast writing this one because it challenged me quite a bit and I could let loose a little bit
******************
Not gonna tag anyone, everyone who wants to take a trip down memory lane, be my guest!

20 Questions for Writers
Tagged by @atlas-affogato Thank you so much for the tag
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
10 (what really? It feels like there should be more, whoa)
2. What's your total ao3 word count?
310,441
3. What fandoms do you write for?
The JCA brain rot is so real, I've got pretty much everything else on hold, but I have completed and uncompleted fics for Star vs the Forces of Evil and some Owl House that are on indefinite hiatus because I really don't care for the series anymore.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Holding onto Dust - Completed Svtfoe multi chapter
Vicissitude - Indefinite Hiatus, toh fic multi-chapter
Enemy Mine - Uncompleted, indefinite hiatus svtfoe fic, that I might revisit some day multi chapter
Healing to the Hurt - Complete Doctor Who One Shot, I was planning a series of one shots connected to it, but lost inspiration for it
Be All my Sins Remembered - Indefinite Hiatus Toh Multi chapter based on an AU I was role playing
5. Do you respond to comments?
I'm really trying to get into the habit of this, even if it's just to say thank you. I used to only respond if people had question
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
90% of my fics don't have happy endings, even the ones that aren't finished are likely to end in angst. I feel like it would be a disservice to choose one with the angstiest ending.
Though, as a personal pick of the one that made me cry the most while writing, it's The Enemies of Fate. Please, do note that this is a svtfoe one shot featuring my OC that I wrote for myself for my birthday.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Hmmm, I guess it's too early to to say JCA ↺ since I am obviously nowhere near the ending and there will be plenty of pain between then and now, so I guess the most feel good fic is the Doctor Who one, but despite the angst, I think Holding onto Dust ends with a cute hopeful scene that satisfied my readers.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I've been called evil (affectionate), but hmm, I don't think I've gotten legit hate since I started writing again. Had some hate comments on my ff.net days from high school but eh... tbh I got more love for it even then so even though I want to nuke my old ff.net account because I don't like most of my old stuff, I'm not going to
And I'm not sharing my old penname either
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Hm, so I've written love scenes, but calling it smut implies a level of raunchiness that I'm not sure I actually write.
10. Do you write crossovers?
No, I'm kind of becoming more disinterested in crossovers outside of a few jokes with Oddity
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don't think so? Back in my ff.net days, I would get people who asked to translate my fics into their native languages, and I occasionally saw people do it without permission but I was at least credited as the original author.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Haha, yes, I just answered this. I haven't had it happen since moving to A03, to my knowledge but it would be an honor. I've had comics drawn of fics, too.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Oddity and I have collabed in the past, she doesn't write fanfic any more but I consider her my co-pilot, I bounce my best ideas off of her.
14. What's your all time favorite ship?
Can't really say I have an all time favorite
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I mentioned it before, but Enemy Mine. I haven't touched the fandom in over a year, but if I ever get the svtfoe bug again, I would love to finish it
16. What are your writing strengths?
Pain. Scope, definitely, I have big ideas and I definitely have what it takes to make them a reality, no "I'm not good enough to write this" here. I also am really good at connecting my ideas with little bits of lore and setting up plot threads with big pay offs later (↺ fans get hype) and my fics defintely have reread value.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I'm told that I'm really good at writing fight scenes and action sequences, but no matter how many times in how many years people assure me that they are amazing, I do not believe this and cannot be convinced otherwise. Dialogue, too. If I get stuck on a project it's 80-95% because I don't know how to make the characters say what I want them to say
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I don't see a problem with it, as long as there is some effort into getting it right. I'll use online translators and cross check on sources to try to make sure what I'm writing is authentic for small snippets of dialog, but I'm always open to and encourage native speakers to correct me if there's a better way of saying it. However for long conversations, I like to use italics and distinguish that what's being said is not actually in English.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Posted online? Pirates of the Caribbean. Off the record, I turned in what was essentially Digimon fanfic with name swaps for grades when I was a child. I was told I was very creative.
20. Favorite fic you've written?
Completed is definitely Holding onto Dust. I was pretty excited about where Vicissitude was going until I fell out of love with the fandom, but I'm still pretty proud of what I had written. But I cannot emphasize enough how excited I am for JCA ↺

Fic Writer Interview
Tagged by @wheremermaidsdwell
tagging @asparklethatisblue, @degenezijde, @hyenabeanz if you want to.
How many works do you have on ao3?
441. 183 of those are The Owl House because I have a problem.
What’s your total word count?
360,262 (ish). Some co-written, so not all my words.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Silver is the Moon (Old Guard, Joe/Nicky)
Calling Across the Sea (Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley)
Remedy (ST: AOS, Kirk/McCoy)
Teasing Means We Love You, Irritation Means You're Still Alive (Old Guard, team fluff)
Such Simple Trials (MCU, Bucky/Steve/Peggy)
Do you respond to comments? Why/why not?
Always! I appreciate them so much!
What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
Coupla Owl House ones. Maybe Raine captured by Kikimora: Leashed, or Camila and "her daughter's" changed behavior: Changeling.
What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
Ehhh... A lot? Like. So many? "We saved the world and got back together and find each other wildly attractive, let's fuck about it!" is not an uncommon theme for me. New Morning Dawning (Raine/Eda) is fun.
Do you write crossovers?
Occasionally. I've done a few Good Omens ones:
We Must Bear Witness (GO/Tolkien, female maiar Aziraphale & Crowley, fusion)
Knightly Virtues are a Pain (GO/Arthuriana, female Aziraphale & Crowley, fusion)
Østenfor engelen og vestenfor demonen (GO/East of the Sun, West of the Moon, female Aziraphale & Crowley, fusion)
Out of Ambit (GO/Discworld, male Aziraphale & female Crowley, isekai)
A Holmes/Doctor Who drabble: A Loose End (Ninth Doctor & SH minor character)
A HP/Justice League Intl. remix for an exchange and a Girl Genius/Marvel comics one for my own joy: Nadia Not-Heterodyne and the Spark Girls (Jaeger OC & Nadia Van Dyne)
An Owl House/ST: TNG fic: Away Mission (King & Tasha & Deanna).
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
No, but I did get a self-identified aro person telling me I was doing romance wrong while having me blocked so I couldn't respond without logging out of my account to respond to a comment on my own fic. That person's comments no longer appear on my stories.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yeeeeep. What kind, like...genders? Species? Yes.
M/M, M/F (occasionally), F/F, F/Nonbinary, M/Nonbinary, Nonbinary/Nonbinary, Multi. Monsterfucking. Some bondage. Angsty masturbation.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I know of.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yep! With @intosnarkness: And mony a canty day, Jim, We've had wi' ane anither (ST: AOS, Kirk/Scott)
and @hyenabeanz: Eda's Reprise (Be Refreshed, and Be Well) (Owl House, Eda/Raine)
Also 10 years and thousands (millions?) of messages of epistolary RP.
What's your all-time favourite ship?
Aging antifascist queers. Raine/Eda, Joe/Nicky, Baze/Chirrut.
What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
I'm GONNA. I'll figure it out! I ONCE tried posting a WIP in hopes that it would make the words come out and it did NOT but I'm going to figure it out eventually! Hyenabeanz helped me figure out what the overarching theme is, so I do in fact have a general direction now. It's already the longest thing I've ever written.
Threads Binding a Wide Universe (Old Guard future fic, sci fi team adventure with new immortals)
What are your writing strengths?
Emotion and worldbuilding. Precision with words.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Sustained plot is hard.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I use it very occasionally and provide translations in a footnote if I don't think readers will be able to figure it out from context.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Good Omens. Long time community member on LJ. Counterpoint (Aziraphale & Crowley, the Arrangement)
What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?
Ehhh. Might eventually write for MXTX, but no ideas have really jumped out at me.
What's your favourite fic you've written?
Again this question... Today, let's say I am very proud of A Reflection Bereft, Not Dark (Old Guard, Joe/Nicky, parallel universes).

Walking a Grim Path
Bones and stones and sleeper's lungs Add palistrom wood and you're begun. Though if here you've begun, where will you end? A child? A servant? A solider or friend? Fate or freewill, which will pull you? To Guard the many, or play with a few? Which is more noble? And which is your right? Who will your trust, and who will you fight? I couldn't tell you, for it's not mine to say How a man-made man should go on his way. But I have this to say, if you're asking me, May your heart be your guiding Key.
I...wrote a poem about grimwalkers?
I really haven't written poetry since I was in school, it's kinda neat that words are coming to me again. I'm not sure exactly why, but this is the second poem I've written in as many days. I wouldn't say I'm "good" at poetry, I was better when I was a teenager, but that's alright I think. It's not the worst thing I've ever written anyway...
It starts off as grimwalkers in general, then turns to Hunter specifically. And a little bit of Kingdom Hearts thrown in cuz it touches everything in my life, and The Owl House is Disney, it could be a KH world as much as anything else.

i'm curious as to what made you choose non-speaking plants as the daemons in your wc au, since a lot of your daemon fic seems to deal more with daemons as sentient beings. is it something you're planning to explore more or just a case by case thing?
of course!
the shortest answer to this is "because it's warrior cats." i also call this a "daemon" au for that exact reason--it was INSPIRED by daemon aus, but yeah, as i write daemon aus its very much a distinct sort of thing.
ive really struggled to make a daemon au work with warriors because at face value (at least to me) it just flat out doesn't--giving cats a second, talking body like...doesnt track? daemon aus give human characters animals. this works. but if your main characters are cats, do the cats...also get animals? if the cats have daemons that means humans have to, as well, and other sort of animal life--which just becomes needlessly complicated and also not warrior cats anymore.
so, i gave the cats plants, because then you can stick with the symbolism aspect of things, but don't have to deal with the logistics of actually having Two Animals Now. plus, in-universe the daemons are given to clan cats by starclan--it is not a normal cat experience and thus it makes much more sense to limit it to just the clans. in my head the plants are also sentient to some extent--they move around the cats' bodies and react to things and do think, its just. they're plants so it's not really in any way a human (or cat in this case) can see 1:1. plus it was actually inspired by some stuff from my owl house daemon au dnkgdfg.
also, technically none of my daemon lore carries over across my various fics. like, mostly it will, or at least bits of it will, but if you look at daemons in like, the nimona daemon au vs the wolf 359 daemon au, i'm clearly exploring different themes with them lol. with the warrior cats au it falls more into the themes im really drawn to with warrior cats, which is starclan as a destructive force and then for this one specifically i really wanted to write about leafpool, bc i adore her but haven't ever written something w her as the main character.
i doubt i'll explore this more in future works, though, unless i happen to write another warrior cat daemon au! you're right in that for most of my daemon aus i treat daemons just as much as people as i do their human counterparts, and that's what i truly have the most fun doing. warrior cats is an outlier and also only a daemon au by the barest definition of the word.

13, 26, 35, 39, 44 from this ask game
Ooo, that's a lotta questions!
13. Do you outline your fics? How much of a headache would someone get if they just looked at an outline of yours without reading the fic?
The short answer? NOT EXACTLY BUT I REALLY REALLY SHOULD
The longer answer?
Technically, I have almost every major plot point written down in some form or another before I write a thing. That said, they usually aren't in any sensible order, and are buried in a mess of a channel in my private discord server, where ALL my brainrot goes.
When I write, I mostly just pick a starting point from one of my notes, and walk it forward from there. I tried properly outlining for one of my fics, and it got me... somewhere, but for the most part, my brain just doesn't work that way. An outline becomes a task list, and I can't stand task lists.
My current system is kinda horrid, but I'd be more worried about someone getting bored sifting through all my scattered notes than getting a headache from them.
26. What’s your biggest distraction when writing?
That one's... probably a tossup between a lot of things. Bodily needs, background streamers mentioning something I actually have an opinion on, my mother barging in with shame and deadlines for cyclical tasks (man, I need out of this house), my twin having something funny to show me... basically just ~Life~, lmao.
I guess part of the problem with my current life situation is that I don't have a lot of time that's truly, unequivocally my own, so I get pushed and pulled around by whatever or whoever calls my attention loudest.
...Or maybe that's just the adhd talking.
35. How much has writing fic changed your life?
SIGNIFICANTLY.
Now, I've been known to struggle with feelings of situational/emotional permanence, so I could be a little biased by the fact that it's my current biggest hobby, but at this point, around half of my social life happens in fandom/fanfiction circles, which wasn't the case a year or two ago.
Two years ago, I didn't read for fun. Like, full stop. I only started doing that after Thanks to Them released, when the hiatus brainrot got me seeking content and community from more than just the show itself and the friend who got me into it. I think the very first fanfic I read was a oneshot someone cross-posted to tumblr, which somehow convinced me to join both tumblr (technically rejoin tumblr) and Ao3 around the same time. Well. maybe a month or so apart, because of the weird account-creation queue thing Ao3 has goin' on. But still.
I don't think I started to consider writing my own fanfiction until I read A Blight on Bonesborough, by GeminiAlchemist, and got a bunch of ideas from the way they expanded upon the lore and magic system and characters and all that of the Owl House.
From there, it kinda took over my life completely, lmao.
I wanted to write about Luz's experiments with glyphs, and some potential avenues of missed opportunity brought to my attention by The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled, by IdeaHunter, and that eventually turned into the Artificer|Overthinker AU (to this day i still haven't picked the name).
Later, I wanted a story about Luz experiencing human high school again after all the dust settled, and after reading a fun fic whose premise was great but whose execution didn't quite scratch the itch (Luz Noceda and the mysterious case of her imaginary girlfriend, by Imkindagayyk), that slowly evolved into Masha and the Very Normal Nocedas (which I actually started writing over a year ago, and still haven't gotten to a postable state with even a single chapter, lmao).
Ever since, I've pretty much been rotating some fic idea or another in my head 24/7.
Nowadays, I wake up and check ao3 for fic updates/new fics, I read while I cook and eat breakfast, I browse tumblr for new stuff from my faves and mutuals, I check ao3 again every few hours, sometimes (but not often) I find the motivation and such to actually write, and I kinda keep up like that all day.
It's maybe a little excessive/obsessive/destructive/etc, but fanfiction kinda defines all the intentional parts of my life right now.
39. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?
Voice and gimmicks.
The most prominent examples I can think of are the various literary tropes I try to imbue certain characters and such with. I usually write in 3rd-person limited perspective, so the characters' voices influence not just the way I write their dialog, but the way I write entire scenes.
There aren't any good examples of it in either of the fics I've actually posted so far, so you'll kinda just have to trust me on this, but a great example is the way I establish the POV character of a given scene.
It's easier for some characters than others, and I haven't come up with a gimmick for every character yet, but I try to open each scene with a literary trope that emphasizes some aspect of the POV character's voice.
For example, scenes written from Luz's point of view always start with speech, either hers or directed at her. Luz is a rambunctious, chatty, and kinda awkward character, who tends to exert herself on every situation she comes across, so I figure an unconventional (and arguably obnoxious, according to some people) opener works great for her.
Hunter is an outwardly-cocky character with some deep-seated self-worth problems (and a very slanted worldview besides), so his scenes always start with a self-affirmation of some kind, usually followed by a contradiction. Often, he's either intentionally or subconsciously trying to convince himself of something, or to do whatever it is he's about to be doing in the scene.
Vee is a bit of a special case. Like Luz, her scenes start in media res, but she tends to borrow the gimmicks of characters around her. She's a shapeshifter, and learned about life in the outside world as a doppelganger, so she has a tendency for mimicry, intentional or not. She also has a secondary gimmick, one that's a bit more her own, in that narration about her often finds itself filled with alliteration, especially involving the letter S (since she's sort of a snake, and snakes hisssss (and doing it with the letter V was too hard lmao)). It started as a running gag she played on Masha in MatVNN, but then I couldn't stop using it, so it's kinda everywhere now.
Masha is a superstitious (though slightly apathetic) character with a keen eye (and no attention span with which to wield it). They tend to seek out meaning even where there isn't any, and thus often completely miss the broader details in favor of the little things. Their scenes start with an isolated excerpt, usually a tarot reading. In an ideal world, the readings would foreshadow both the events of the scene and at least one of the ways they've misinterpreted them, but unfortunately, I haven't yet actually learned enough tarot to do that. It's a big part of why Masha and the Very Normal Nocedas is taking so long to get to a postable state 😅.
That's pretty much all the opening gimmicks I've worked out so far, but another one I'd like to mention has to do with the way magic is written.
Whenever a spell is cast, I whip out my thesaurus and try to sprinkle in a few words nearby that relate to the kind of spell being cast. For instance, I might say that when Willow casts a wall of vines, she first "plants her feet on the ground", or "stifles her budding anger". Before Luz casts an invisibility spell, she might think about "hiding the cards she was dealt" or maybe "her hands disappear into her pockets". Stuff like that.
The way I imagine it, magic taps straight into the caster's homonculus (broadly, the part of their brain that decides and understands what encompasses "the body") in such a way that the caster becomes part of the spell just as much as the spell becomes part of the caster.
Luz in particular, having the knack for magic that she does, tends to start this process of "becoming the spell" as soon as she decides to cast it, not just at the moment she actually casts it. It's like working yourself into the headspace of a thing, before sitting down and doing it. I've got a whole huge segment in one of my more dramatic fics that's basically an entire page of this kind of thing, with Luz preparing to cast a really big spell (or, well. technically a pair of big spells (TECHNICALLY technicaly it's one normal spell being used to prepare to cast the two massive spells. it's a whole thing)). It honestly might be the highlight of my writing portfolio, which is a huge shame because it's a MASSIVE spoiler.
Anyways, uhhh yeah. I really like gimmicks.
44. Rant about something writing related.
WELL SHITDAMNFUCK, IF ONLY I READ ALL THESE QUESTIONS AHEAD OF TIME! I COULD'VE SPARED SOME OF THOSE PRIOR RANTS FOR HERE!
Well. Guess I aughtta find something else to write about.
How about the ultimate enemy, the scourge of our people, the cornerstone of suffering itself, the dreaded and feared, the great and terrible:
Writer's Block.
It may come as a surprise to the ignorant among us (hehe, amogus), but I, too, suffer from Writer's Block from time to time! In fact, I'm even suffering from it right now! And I have been for the past... oh goodness, over 2 months now.
I had one good day of writing, in all that time, which only came about because I nearly fell asleep in the tub. I somehow daydreamed my way into a really good turn of phrase that I just HAD to put into context for Backlight and Bitrot.
So far, that singular scene, set (the equivalent of) several seasons into the story, remains both the only thing I've written for that fic, and the only thing I've written at all since January.
It's infuriating! I have all these ideas, all these things I WANT to write, all these people I want to share these ideas with, all this time, all this passion, all this brainrot, and yet I Just! Can't! Write!
AUGH!
It would be one thing if I'd simply run out of ideas; I could call this whole thing something pretty like a "dreaming phase" or a "break in order to recharge" or whatever. But I've been dreaming for ages! This break has been in no way relieving! I'm just wallowing in my inability to do the things i love, while the world moves on around me!
You've had an excellent way of phrasing this for yourself, recently: "The executives are on vacation."
It's not some pleasure cruise for me! Those darn jerks (basic brain functions) who dictate every little thing that goes on around here just fucked off to who-knows-where! Completely blind to the consequences (stagnation, suffering, shame) of their absence, and how those affect their employees (me)! I just work here, man! Lemme do my job! I wanna do my job, but I can't if you don't let me! Ugh.
I want to write so goddamn bad. I've got all these projects to write for, all these brainrot spores to spread. I've got so much I want to accomplish, and yet my dumb bitch brain can't seem to get the memo. Work phone is powered off, I suppose.
It's gotten to the point lately that even those random notes to myself have slowed down. I'm having less new ideas than before. I'm picking old ideas out and polishing them less than before.
I'm worried I might end up having to find a way to cater my writing to the dumb mammal part of my brain somehow, in order to bring some momentum back. Write about something crude and easy and filled with every instantly-gratifying fantasy I can imagine.
No more of this 'careful thought' and 'consideration for themes' junk, we want it LOUD and we want it NOW.
Ugh.
Writer's Block is the worst.
What a bummer to end on. Oh well, I'm gettin' kinda sleepy, and I'm out of questions anyways. Thanks for the ask!

20 questions for fic authors
Thank you for tagging me, @candyskiez!!! I shall use this wisely (to procrastinate. And to ramble because I love rambling). Tagging @pascal-oswell @justmagicalgirl and @drbtinglecannon if you wanna do it, if not, that's okay!
1. How many fics do you have on ao3?
36, which would probably be insane to me a couple of years ago, but they're nothing compared to the amount of wips I have, enlisted or not (please, send help).
2. What's your total ao3 word count?
170,058! Nice
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Mainly The Owl House.
I have a couple of fics for the Shadowhunter Chronicles, mostly The Last Hours (though I do have a Wicked Powers wip) but I haven't had the most pleasant experiences in the TSC fandom so that'll probably be it.
Oh! I do have 4-ish Mob Psycho 100 fics in the works and a Star Wars one.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
So, what was your name again? No surprises there, it's still lowkey insane to me how much attention that one got
Sentimental, grieving to survive: I think we all were longing for the family reunions after Thanks to Them, so I get it too
Operation 'Make Darius like me': If I had to pick something as my fic writing legacy, it would be Hunter causing Darius psychic damage by saying"meow-meow" in the most deadpan expression in the world
Long lost lies: I remember being sooo excited to write this one and then having a mental illness episode in the middle of it so overall it's funny it came out nice
An unsung melody, mine for safekeeping: I think this was like my third fic??? And it's just pure fluff so... really nice to have it here
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! I cherish each comment dearly so I try to reply to them all within the week. Though I have been going Through It the past couple of months, so I've been falling behind on that :( I love them tho, I'm kinda sad when I don't get any
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Okay, it's either "Loyalty Binds you" or one of my puppet Dadrius reunions which is, in retrospective, incredibly funny because I wrote those 3 one after the other, no hurt/comfort to be found.
I would argue the puppet ones have some hopeful undertones tho, so perhaps "Loyalty Binds you", especially because there's no hopeful ending in sight unless the whim strikes me to write it. It exists. In my head.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I write SUCH cheesy endings, you have no idea, I'm generally not one to leave things in a sad note because I'm too soft for that. But if I have to pick, I woud say "So, what was your name again?" if only because the ending is happy like in most of my fics, but this one, because it's a reunion fic, has a ecstatic sort of quality, I would say.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I have gotten a couple of weird comments, but not hate, no.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Girl, I can barely write people kissing, this is asking too much from me. In all seriousness, I mostly write found family, so no smut here.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Same as candyskiez said, I prefer to write AUs in the setting of other media. I think crossovers can be fun but most of them aren't my thing, ngl.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Once as far as I know. When I went to ask the person to take it down, they deleted their whole profile so... win?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Someone asked me once for permission to translate a fic to Russian, I believe, but I'm not sure if they went through with it.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not really, but Will and I should really get on with the one we have planned. To be fair, I have not replied our unhinged planning in a While™ so it's mostly on me. Oops.
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
I don't think I have one. Half of the ships I like don't compel me to read fics about them and the other half feel to fresh to even begin to compete as all-time favorite.
If I had to pick tho, I'm going with Cecilos because they meant everything to me from like 14-17.
15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
All of them /j
Okay, kidding, I have been so exhausted lately in the writing department buuuut probably "Children of Dust and Ashes". I still love the concept and ideas I had for it but the one other person who cared about it is an ex-friend and as I mentioned before, TSC is a tricky fandom for me so I don't think I can cheerlead myself into finishing this one. I'm sorry to the like... 2 people who seemed interested.
16. What's your writing strengths?
You think I know myself that much? /j
Um. I'm gonna say characterization? I don't think it's perfect, but I do try to keep it consistent and it's something people have praised before so let's go with it.
17. What's your writing weaknesses?
In theory I know a shit ton of vocabulary. In practice, I feel like the language I use is too basic, which I blame a bit on the language barrier, and my descriptions too simple, which is a problem for me in Spanish as well, so that one is all me lmao.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I eat that shit up. Of course, I think it also depends on the context, keep it consistent! Like if a character canonically sprinkles their speech with words/sentences in their own language, one should absolutely strive to imitate that.
I think adding the translations at the end as a note works well.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
In general in life? Lord of the Rings, especifically, about Gimli, he was my guy.
Actually posting online? I'm. Huh. I'd rather not say... I'm willing to say the second one was Voltron Legendary Defender, so you can imagine how bad the first one must have been.
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
"Loving Echoes (In loving memory of Emperor Belos)" is one I was super fond of when I wrote it and I still think back to it when considering my best pieces. I just really liked writing the speech/monologue there.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Tagged by: @noodyl-blasstal thanks!!
Tagging: @fandomsnstuff @duck-newton I think a lot of people have been tagged already but if you haven't pls consider this an invitation to answer these as well!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
2 currently, but I plan on putting up my TAZNC work at which point I will have 15!
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
4,680 right now, but that number will increase by a lot shortly since I think all my TAZNC works were between 1,000-4,000 words.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
TAZ, and I've got a few Owl House things in the works I hope to finish some day.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Show Me Yours, then The Thing With Feathers
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! I love receiving comments and I love being able to talk a bit about what I was thinking when I wrote things.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don't usually write a lot of angst, but probably this unnamed ficlet because nothing really gets resolved at the end, although it is a fairly hopeful ending.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
It's hard to pick, I write mostly things that leave a lot of possibilities open, but I'd say probably my 10th entry for TAZNC this year (man I really gotta name these things) because I think the emotional journey makes the ending more satisfying.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Nope! I've only gotten very kind words and I'm extremely grateful for all of them.
9. Do you write smut?
Yup. Nothing I'm quite finished with yet but I have several in the works and I hope to get some posted soon
10. Do you write crossovers?
They're not really my style, but I think they are fun to think about and play around with!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of, and I'm small enough right now that I think it's unlikely.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I've heard of
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I did once on a previous account, unfortunately I was very bad at finishing anything at that point in my life and I hadn't gotten on ADD meds, so we didn't finish it (my fault). I'd like to co-write something at some point, but I think I'd need to have more practice with writing/finishing longer stories before I felt confident about doing it again.
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Taakitz babey! Top tier meet-weird plus some truly beautiful moments, and such a great dynamic to play around with
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I'm not sure I'd say "never," but there is one Taakitz fake dating fic that I would need to seriously rework in order to make it coherent. I hope to finish some version of it someday, but it certainly won't look like the current WIP.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Boy I wish I knew! Someone told me I have a "lyrical" writing style, so I'll take it! I do really like working with the flow of words. Also I wrote a lot of tender romantic scenes when I was a touch-starved closeted high schooler, and I was surprised by how easy those scenes feel to write in my current work.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I have a tendency to write too much lead-in and too much ending if I'm not careful, so I basically have to chop off the first and last bits of every fic. I am very bad at coming up with plots. I worry a lot about capturing characters' voices and can struggle with differentiating them. And as previously mentioned, I tend to start a lot of things and not finish them, although I think I'm improving in that regard!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I'm very wary about it for myself. I could just about manage French but for anything else I'd want someone fluent to look it over for me.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Good Omens, back before the TV series came out! It was a pretty small fandom at that point, and I had to get my Aziraphale/Crowley angst out somewhere when I only knew like three people who'd read the book
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
I'm really proud of my TAZNC work, but I think I'm still proudest of The Thing With Feathers because I feel like I did exactly what I wanted with it and captured everything I was hoping to.

My comfort characters?
One of my long time comfort characters was Juudai Yuuki from Yu-Gi-Oh GX, a trend that you'll ses with my comfort characters is that they're either A, super adorable, or B, a suffering wet cat in the rain. Juudai is an example of A, at least in season 1. He's also a comfort because, like a lot of other people, I can relate to him. I will always stand by the idea that GX is really just a coming of age story, and Juudai represents that well. I can make a whole essay about this boyo if I wanted.
One of my more significant (if that makes sense idk how else to describe it) comfort characters is Dimitri (fe3h). He's got the best of both worlds, imo. He's both adorable and a suffering wet cat in the rain, oh the duality of man. Can I just give him a hug? I wanna give him a hug. He was a surprisingly big influence on my writing. The way he was written (at least in azure moon i haven't played azure gleam yet and i refuse to be spoiled) like... that's how I wanna write a character. I also cried during his supports with Marianne, and it's definitely an achievement for a work of FICTION to make me cry.
I get a lot of comfort from the Kirby characters a lot. It's because they're just so freaking cute I can just turn my brain off and enjoy the spoingles :D If I could be in any fictional world I would definitely be in the Kirby world. Even when there is stressful world ending stuff, it's still super cute! Very stress free and I need to be stress free... 😅
I have more but I don't really have as much to say about them other than whether they're adorable (A), or a suffering wet cat in the rain (B), so I'll just give a list. Some of them are from fandoms that I'm no longer a part of, just a heads up!
Yuusei Fuudo (Yu-Gi-Oh 5DS) A but in a mature way if that makes sense
Kaiser Ryo (Yu-Gi-Oh GX) Sometimes I just find comfort in other people's suffering. (People being fictional characters,I'm not a sadist irl don't arrest me)
Ok this might sound really weird and you're probably gonna lose a lot of respect for me for this but Sans the Skeleton. He's the exception to the A or B rule. I really only find comfort because some (keyword SOME) fan art is just really, really pretty and calming to look at. Also he's chill.
ENA (ENA YouTube Series) A. I find them (I still don't know what gender they are) to be just really fun. They're world is definitely number 2 for which one I would be in. ENA's kind of an "unreality" thing for me. They're world is a form of escapism.
I just started watching The Owl House and I'm kinda obsessed with it lmao, and with this obsession came my newest comfort character that I think about too much to be healthy! 🥳 It's the mother fricking Golden Guard. He's both A and B, if you were wondering. I'm a little ashamed about it, and I don't really know why, but then again I feel shame for everything I've ever done soooooo

Fic Writer Interview
Tagged by @hsavinien
Tagging: you, if you wanna. Seriously, always like reading stuff about people I follow.
How many works do you have on ao3?
10. Mostly Owl House, couple of She Ra, couple of Steve Universe short things.
What’s your total word count?
19,566, though one is co-written.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
One Breath in Front of the Other (She-Ra, Catra centric)
All of You, All of Me (The Owl House, Raeda NSFW)
Do You Have a Flag? (The Owl House, Luz and the Hexsquad gen)
Sleeping patterns (Steven Universe meta about Ruby and Sapphire)
Catra's Shield (meta about SPOP finale)
Do you respond to comments? Why/why not?
Almost always! I appreciate them so much, and I like fandom as interaction.
What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
Of the ones on Ao3 probably "Legacies." (Steven Universe, no longer canon compliant.) It's Pearl yearning for Rose Quartz. But while most of my fics are angst filled, I try not to end them there. For real angst you'd have to uncover my teenaged ff.net account and Fruits Basket fics.
What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
"Plans (Fulfilled)" Raeda has some of my favorite fluff I've written, but "One Breath in Front of the Other" has like, real positive character growth and recovery that warms my soul deeply.
Do you write crossovers?
Not really. I’m very rarely interested in worlds crossing that way for whatever reason even as a reader, so writing it doesn't happen.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Not on anything I've written as an adult on ao3, no. Some on much older stuff I wrote as a kid.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Lmao yes, though only two so far. Old witch monsterfucking, apparently. I'm open to writing more, I just haven't. I have part of another Raeda smutfic in progress where no one turns into a giant monster first. ......but there might be plant magic involved.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I know of.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yep! With @hsavinien Eda's Reprise (Be Refreshed, and Be Well) (Owl House, Eda/Raine) was really fun. We both are big fans of the ship and generally jive in how we like them written.
What's your all-time favourite ship?
That's hard because it always shifts, but Raine/Eda touches on some deep parts of my soul, particularly with Eda's character development. But I think Ruby/Sapphire from Steven Universe too. Both of these have some staying power due to personal feels and connections about the characters and ships.
What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
I have a fic I was noodling around about Eda having to quit grudgby because of the curse. My angst fics tend to be me working though some shit; I was going to write this one because I was feeling utter despair at some of the ways my disabilities were limiting me from doing sports I cared about. But I've since worked through those things a bit, and am more at peace. I still DO wanna write the fic, but a lot of the initial motivation has (thankfully?) waned for now.
What are your writing strengths?
I think emotion and creating images. it was what people said they appreciated in the non-fandom writing workshops I was in, and what comments seem to imply.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Just actually doing it. Like so many things in my life, the executives don't function well so I do far less of it than I want. Which makes me sad, because I went to school for this shit, and was constantly told I have a talent for it. I'm good at words. I feel bad that I mostly waste it.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Needs to be a reason for it imo. If everyone is speaking the same language, it usually makes little sense to suddenly interject it. It makes sense if the characters aren't speaking the same and you have a limited perspective. Or if you have a character that is bilingual and switches back and forth the actual way bilingual/ESL speakers do. So there are times that it's appropriate, but saying sacre bleu! to occasionally signal these characters are all speaking French! Or whatever is not one of them.
What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?
I kind of have some Locked Tomb ideas bouncing idly in my head but nothing concrete yet.
What's your favourite fic you've written?
Idk. I like many of them. Maybe The Blood Behind the Dam, which is an Owl House Raine and BATs centered fic that not many people seemed to check out for whatever reason. But I loved writing it, and I still like reading it sometimes.

20 questions for fic writers
I was tagged by @the-real-azalea-scroggs! Thank you <3
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
35! And hopefully one more before the end of the year.
2. What's your total AO3 wordcount?
201,451. Which is mad.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Zelda (Linked Universe), The Owl House, Spiderverse and as of that fic I need to upload before the end of the year, Revue Starlight.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Five Teaspoons - Also the fic that took me the least time to write out of all of them. But it's Wild-centric LOL
The Pink Heroes - Legend and Wild discuss gender while Twilight chills in the background.
Someday We'll Stand Here By The Sun - My Owl House longfic that explores Luz and Amity's relationship post S2, pre S3.
The Quiet Kitchen - The prequel to SWSHBTS.
Walking the Same Path - Wind and Wild discuss gender- yeah this is a running theme isn't it LOL
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I respond to comments because you must be crazy if you think I'm gonna pass up a chance to discuss the blorbos I write about more
6. What's a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably the weight of your actions, but I swear it's only angsty bc the canon of Gwen's universe in Spiderverse is angsty! Author is not responsible!
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Can I cheat and do a fic I haven't written yet? Because the ending of the Wind and Wild gender series is going to be so sweet it may cause cavities. Other than that, probably Eudemonia, cause it's just pure fankids fluff.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
No, I think half my fics are probably too niche to attract bad faith types.
9. Do you write smut?
I'm baby.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I rotated the idea of Owl House x LU in my brain for a while but never wrote it, and now that I haven't, I probably never will.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Lol yeah someone uploaded an incredibly similar fic to in how many grey hours a few hours after I did, but nothing ever came of it. It wasn't Stolen stolen so I don't really care.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I haven't hit that milestone yet :(
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
The Lumity fankids are a brainchild of myself, @heleirylis and our friend maisa even if the fics on my profile for it aren't actually co-written. Also me and leir still need to do a joint fic for one of our fandoms (it WILL happen soon)
14. What's your all time favourite ship?
Lumity or Kuromaya now I've gotten back into the latter. I could write essays about both. I have in the case of Lumity
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Can I say all of them? LOL er jokes aside I could answer this question with my timeloop fic where Time dies in front of Twilight and Twi uses the ocarina to try to save him over and over, but I haven't even started that properly, and I still reserve the right to say I WILL finish it. It's just a way more complicated fic than anything else I've ever written and requires much more brainpower than I fear I currently have. I guess the WIP that is actually never getting finished is my Fluffbruary 2023 collection. RIP.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue and writing characters in character.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Anything other than those two things. But particularly writing descriptions.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
A couple of my fave blorbos are bilingual so I do it occasionally. But my brother is the one with a languages degree, not me, so I honestly try and avoid it.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Zelda, back when I was 11. Which makes me happy that I'm still writing for it now.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
It's a bit hard to choose but I really love I've Built My Life Around You. I was attempting to capture a very specific feeling and I think I did it. Plus my writing is way too good in that fic, to the point where whenever I reread it I forget I'm the one who wrote it. And I reread it a lot cause it's my niche I want to read, which is why it probably qualifies as my fave.
Tagging anyone who wants to do this!

not specifically a stones ask but what's your favorite conditions to write in? do you have a preference for location, weather, time of day, etc.?
Interesting question!
My writing location is always at my desk, since it's where my PC is. That said, I always have a notebook and pen with me, no matter where I go, in case I get ideas and need to jot them down. I haven't written actual chapters longhand for many years, though; usually it's just sparks of inspiration that go into that notebook, or thoughts on additional fleshing-out for things that are already planned. And yes, that notebook even sits beside my bed, since oftentimes those moments between wakefulness and sleep - at both ends of the night - are the most productive for mulling over ideas.
(I do have a laptop, btw - a gaming one, like my PC is a gaming rig - but I barely ever use it. It's more of a backup in case anything goes wrong with the PC itself.)
As to preferred weather conditions for writing? No real preference, although in general I tend to wilt in hot weather, so I never really feel up to doing much at those times. Summer in the UK isn't as punishing temperature-wise as I'm sure it is elsewhere (although we did breach 40℃ [104℉] last summer), but we have this weird kind of energy-sapping heat; it's not tropical levels of humidity, but 25% humidity and 25℃ [77℉] wet bulb isn't fun. Our houses here are built to retain heat, not dissipate it, and we don't have AC (unless we fork out quite a bit of cash to buy a portable AC unit, which I did several years ago), so on hot days most of the UK either swelters with just a fan, or heads out to the nearest park to get sunburned. That said, I do adore a good rainy day (being a Brit, I kinda have no choice in that matter!), so I tend to feel more productive on those days. But I don't really have a preference when it comes to writing.
(Yeah, get a Brit onto the weather and they don't shut up…)
Time of day? Usually night time. I'm a night owl by nature, so when I'm on leave from work my bedtimes can gravitate toward 5am quite easily. Sadly, I have to drag myself up at 6:30am for work (and quite a while back I spent 20 years getting up before 4am for work) so at most I have to be in bed by 1am, otherwise my creativity suffers. Suffering from occasional insomnia also doesn't help with that, but I do what I can, when I can.

Huh, somehow missed this. Looks fun! Let's get this done real quick.
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
Currently, I have 6, though I have a good few others in my notes that probably won't see the light of day for a long time. Got enough current projects already going, ya'know?
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
416,663. Honestly, I thought there'd be more.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
I'm a bit all over the place with my hyperfixations. Right now, I've got fics for The Owl House, Undertale, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, and Ratchet & Clank, with more fics in all of those fandoms prepared. I do also have some notes on a couple Percy Jackson fics, but I'm not sure those will ever see the light of day.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1 - Another Child Lost to the Mountain 2 - To Be Wild, To Be Happy, To Be Free 3 - Sketchy Potions & Magic Commotions 4 - Dress Up Party 5 - I Hate You (I Love You)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Oh absolutely! I love engaging with comments, whether it just be a quick little "I love your work!" or a detailed comment about the chapter. Comments are honestly some of my biggest motivators to keep going, and I can't describe how happy they make me. I will admit, I'm a bit selfish because part of the reason I respond to comments is because I hope it'll encourage others to comment, but I do just like talking to people about my works too!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Angsty endings aren't exactly my style, so m angstiest ending isn't really saying much, but it'd probably have to be I Hate You (I Love You). A story about grief is always going to have a bit of bittersweetness, even if it did end on a hopeful note.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Most of my big fics are still either works in progress or part of a series that's still going, so I don't have too many endings to work with. So with that in mind, my happiest ending is probably in Dress Up Party, since its a pure fluff fic. Everything is hopeful, the characters are happy about the future, and things seem good! It's as fluffy and fun as can be.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Nope. The closest I ever got was some very valid criticism on one fic, and the person who gave it asked if it was okay first. People on AO3 have been absolutely lovely to me.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Naw, I don't write smut. I don't think people realize how hard writing good smut is. It's a skill that takes a lot of time to hone, and it's not something I'm personally interested in doing. But I've got a lot of respect for folks that can pull it off. ...also, a lot of the fandoms I'm in are focused around minors, and it would be hella weird for me to write smut about those.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
So far, no. The closest I've gotten to doing so is some cute character interactions I've written between characters in me and my friends' fic, and we have considered doing an actual crossover one shot between us. As for fandom crossovers, I haven't done any yet, but have considered doing a couple in the past. The biggest one being an Avatar x Owl House fic, with Eda finding Luz thinking she may be the Avatar because she picked out the correct toys, only to find out she's a non-bender, but sticking with her anyway cuz she gets attached. Maybe that'll come out some day, but if it does it won't be for a long time.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of. I certainly hope not, but with A.I going the way it is, I wouldn't be surprised if my work has been chewed up by the algorithms.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Once again, nope! I'm nowhere near big enough for that kinda thing. Would be pretty neat though.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not really, though like I said, I have written a few crossover scenarios with other writer friends. If we ever do that crossover fic I mentioned, this answer will change.
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
...ok so fun fact about me, I suck at picking a favourite anything. I just can't do it. How can I have a favourite ship when I like different ships for different reasons? It doesn't make sense! Am I supposed to make like a scoring system and say whichever gets the most points is deemed my favourite? So yeah, can't say a 100% definitive favourite, so here are the big ones I love and why I love them Lumity (Luz Noceda/Amity Blight) will forever hold a place in my heart for how wholesome and pure it is. These two have no strife or angst, and even when problems come up like Luz lying about what happened with her mum, the two handle it with surprising maturity! They're just so tooth-rottingly sweet and I adore them. Camilraeda (Camila/Eda/Raine) is one of my favourite poly ships of all time. These three are tired, chaotic in their own special ways, and can and will adopt any stray child they meet, whether they be human, witch, or cosmic god, and stars above do I love them for it! Percabeth (Percy Jackson/Annabeth Chase) is the first ship I ever got invested in, and I love it to death to this very day. The OG slow burn of my childhood. These are two of the most loyal, ride-or-die idiots you will ever meet, and their complete devotion to each other is so sweet to read about. And finally, a bit of an ambiguous one, but Hero/Partner from the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. With all of the games, the vibes between the Hero and their Partner are so sweet. They always go through so much together, and there's always so much trust and love between them, and once again, they are so insanely ride-or-die for each other. Whether they're running from the law as they get hunted across the land or dragging themselves through a literal hellscape, the two of them always have each other's back. It's very sweet.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I had an idea for a fic in the Percy Jackson universe a while back about a clear-sighted trans girl getting saved and picked up by the Hunters of Artemis, with them training her and trying to bring her into the group. I have a whole series planned around it, with all the big plot points planned out, but I just don't know if I'll ever have the time to write it with all the other stories I have. Plus, motivation. It's hard to hype myself up to write a story centered around an OC when I know they can be a bit disliked by some communities.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue is easily my biggest strength. I can write characters bantering for days and days, and a lot of the time I have to cut myself off and make the characters shut up so I can move the plot along. A lot of the time, chapter planning for me involves writing everything in a script format with dialogue as the focus, with me filling in the exposition and fluff text around the character's chatting. While dialogue comes pretty naturally to me, I like to think I'm decent at writing fight scenes too. They are definitely a lot harder to do, cuz a lot goes into making a good fight scene; setting an interesting stage for the characters to move in, making sure the movements are clear and you know where everyone is at all times, while also not bogging things down with too many words to keep things snappy and quick, and emphasizing key words and moments to give combat the satisfying crunch that you get in media you can watch. It's hard, but I like to think I've done a good job of it in the past, and hope that I can continue to do so!
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I've been told in the past that my writing can be too straight-forward at times, not taking the time or using enough flowery language to really sell certain emotions. In some situations, that can be a good thing, but there have been moments where I have failed to really sell the emotion of a key scene and make my audience feel what I wanted them to. It's something I'm working on, finding the balance between getting to the point and selling emotions right.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
...one of the main fandoms I write for is The Owl House, with the main character being an Afro-Latino girl. I think that answers the question. But seriously, I do love it. It adds a lot of charm to dialogue, but at the same time can be a bit difficult to sell in written media. In things like T.V shows, you can just add subtitles to show what the character is saying, but in written media like fics that can come off a bit awkwardly. Luckily, I've found a nice workaround, with some HTML script on AO3 allowing me to show the translation to things Luz says when you hover your mouse over the text! I think it's a nice mix, allowing me to show Luz being herself while not leaving the audience confused on what she's saying.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The Owl House is what got me into both reading and writing fanfic, with me getting my start on my first series with Sketchy Potions & Magic Commotions. You can definitely tell its my first work too, with my style developing as I go. Heck, I even had to go back and edit a couple of the super early chapters because of how rough they were.
20. Favourite fic you've written?
Hah! No. I've already established I can't pick favourite. I will say, I'm the most invested in continuing my two biggest projects, those being The Wild Light Series and Another Child Lost to the Mountain, but calling them my favourites? That's inaccurate at best.
Alright, so I guess it's my turn to tag folks? Floof already got most of my writer friend's in that friend circle, so how about I pick a few of the writers I love here on Tumblr?
@teshamerkel, @ocil91, and @memory-overload, I challenge thee to answer some questions! Enjoy!
Twenty Questions for Fic Writers
Thank you for the tag @sneakyfox55! I don't normally do tag games, but this one looks really fun. (What author doesn't want the chance to ramble about their writing?) (This one is also copy/paste, so I'm less worried about clogging up people's dashes)
I'm going to put it under a cut since this is pretty long!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
As of now? 9! (But I have more than 35 fics in progress in my drafts that aren't posted.)
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
129,647! But like, triple that (or more) if you want to count unposted stuff.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Undertale!
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. Heart on the Table
2. How to Defeat a Human in 6 Easy Steps
3. faux pas
4. How to Comfort a Panicking Child
5. How to Help a Human in 2 Easy Steps
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes!!! I love responding!!! I'm behind horribly right now because of my work's busy season, but I plan to catch back up! It's so fun to get to talk to people about the things I've poured my heart and soul into, you know? And I'm always glad to get to thank the people that took the time to leave a comment! It's a bit hard to keep up sometimes, though.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
"Is it Home Without You?" definitely. I'm still really proud of that fic, and it's part of a series with a happy ending, but the actual oneshot is the immediate aftermath of Gaster's lab accident from Sans's PoV. So, uh. Dead dad that no one but you remembers (not even your little brother) is pretty angsty. It's a step away from the norm for me, since normally I only write things with happy endings. But since this is part of a series that has a happy ending, I suppose my brain allowed me to end it off on a bittersweet (sad and angsty) note.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
This is really hard to say! I like big, happy endings, so most of my stuff gets them! Probably.... Hmmm. Either faux paus or How to Defeat a Human in 6 Easy Steps
8. Do you get hate on fics?
For the most part? No. (And I will always be grateful for the kind people that have picked me back up after I've been shot down in the past.)
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
None you'll ever find under this username! I try to keep it family friendly here. ...Welllll, depending on if you count fics that tackle trauma and child murder in them family friendly.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I haven't written any cross fandom crossovers! ...I have, however, been guilty of writing cross fic crossovers (none posted). I like to make my characters from different fics interact with each other. I've also done some crossovers for fun with my friends, making our characters interact. All still Undertale fandom, though! The craziest one is probably "How to Adopt an Interdimensional Traveler" which may be posted at some point. It's a crossover between Heart on the Table, and my How To: series. What, you're telling me Papyrus has TWO children to deal with now? (Here, have the first little bit of that because I love it. And I love Papyrus.)
Step One: Find out their name “FRISK!” Papyrus’s voice was not a shriek. No. He was perfectly composed as he stared down at the… little Frisk in front of him. The very little Frisk. There was a familiar thumping behind him as… his Frisk crashed down the stairs in their familiar clumsy way. For all the elegance they displayed in battle, that did not tend to follow them home. He partially whirled around to face them, keeping… mini Frisk in his sight at the same time. “What’s up, Dad?” Mini Frisk made a small noise that may have been confusion as they rapidly looked between him and their larger counterpart. “…Dad?” Oh. Hm. Yes. That was. A thing. Apparently Papyrus had two children now.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know! And I sure hope not!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope! That would be cool as heck, though!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
None that are posted! But I like to write with my friends, sometimes.
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
Surprisingly! Not Undertale! (Though I do like Alphyne!) Zukka! (Zuko x Sokka, Avatar the Last Airbender) I've loved that ship for years, and even though I'm not really in the AtLA fandom anymore, it still has a very close place in my heart.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Hmmmm. Again, nothing posted. I don't post fics unless they have a first draft completely written to prevent that kind of thing. (Though, I do rewrite stuff, and that can cause pretty big posting delays. But if for some reason I can't find the motivation to finish my rewrites, I could always just slap my first draft up so that it's not completely unfinished before I'd abandon it completely.) Of my fics not posted, though? I've got a fic called "Ghost of You" which is a fated soulmate dusttale!papyrusXreader fic. I hope I can finish it one day, but... well. I'm not sure if I will or not.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Characterization, and internal dialogue, I think! I like to think I'm pretty good at writing a character in such a way that even if you pick just a sentence at random, you know who's head you're in. Or, perhaps my strength is hurt/comfort in general...
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
It used to be dialogue, though I'm working to get better at that! I also struggle sometimes when it comes to making sure that the pace is engaging and that we aren't just stuck in someone's internal thoughts for 5 paragraphs. Gotta break that up with some stuff actually happening!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Very cool, and a great way to show characters that speak other languages than the one you are in the PoV of!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Well... the fic itself is long gone, but! I wrote for Ouran Highschool Host Club when I was like 12.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE! HOW COULD YOU ASK ME TO CHOOSE BETWEEN MY CHILDREN? MY BABIES! ...Heart on the Table has a special place in my heart though.
No pressure tags (only if you want! this is just for fun!): @lizavet @timeofjuly @humankk and anyone that wants to!
Also... Shall I dare? invoke the potential wrath of a god(ess)?
I dare. I'm curious about the answers (if the goddess does deign to answer this mortal/jk) @llamagoddessofficial (please feel free to just ignore if you want!)
