I did not play the games so I only know his characterisation via fandom discourse but it seems to me that consent is a very important thing for the og tinman. From what I can tell, the glorious evolution is only for willing participants and he wouldn't do that to anyone else. But Arcane Viktor? The scenes before Ekko's attack were not giving "consent king" vibes from him.

Based on that, my idea is:

so. i forgot to say. skeptic IS a detective. a pi. a gumshoe. a dick, if you will. but i guess thats sort of implied already. i just wanted to state it clearly.

this whole thing was made bc im so fucking insane about the cage chapter. the themes about being a slave to fate and how our actions are not our own and losing control of yourself and your life. just. ugh. it speaks to me a lot. and ofc skeptic being an old timey detective is so universal. i joke about hating him but i Do like him and find him interesting. i want to put him in situations.

and thats what this whole au is. putting skeptic in situations. hearing new perspectives, having his theories proven wrong, dealing with uncooperative suspects, red herrings. i love when hes wrong or ignored or otherwise slighted. he seems very. sure of himself? not an arrogant fool, but more. a guy who hasnt been wrong before. ykno. and i think ur typical film noir (with slay the princess elements like cycles and fate) is just a really natural fit to explore all that.

but its Also about playing with the whole "perception based creature" thing that the princess has going on. i Love "character nobody really knows" and the princess, with her multiple forms and fluid personality, works Rlly rlly well with this concept. i love the princess and i think she deserves to be a mysterious "haunting the narrative" type character. shes like a spy with multiple disguises. or someone in witness protection.

and also bartender hero lives in my mind like a parasite. oh my god that reminds me i need to talk about the others ok.

hero is the bartender (as stated before) of "the long quiet" bc i think its funny theyre still in tlq even in this silly film noir au.

stubborn is the bouncer/bodyguard/whatever the fuck you call it. he kicks ppl out when they get too rowdy.

cheated is The regular there. he either sits at a table and mopes or gets roped into a card game with opportunist that results in both of them being kicked out (theres always blood drawn).

opportunist is a conman/snake oil salesman whos only still allowed bc hero is too nice and opp is too good at buttering ppl up.

smitten is a tortured artist, lamenting to anyone who will listen about his lost love and muse. he is never paying his damn tab, but again, hero is too nice.

cold is a mysterious figure who only visits the bar like. once a month. he barely talks to anyone and only drinks water. (hes an assassin LOL)

broken is the local priest (the god is shifty btw) who only visits bc hero told him to get out more. he doesnt drink either. he just looks vaguely haunted.

contrarian is a guy whos hard to pin down. you cant find him, you just have to pray he appears ykno. the only people who Know him are hero and cold, but hero refuses to divulge anything abt him and cold is just. Cold. ykno.

paranoid is skeptic's partner (lol) and secretary. he does half the work around the office (maybe more) and lives with skeptic. he complains and protests and threatens to quit, but its all bark. hes very loyal. to his own frustration.

now im going to be honest. hunted is Super difficult to put in this au. given his role as a fight or flight, base animal instinct type, he cant be fit into an au like this very easily. ive considered a hunter, but that doesnt fit him at all. so. im a hack and i should delete my tumblr.

GOD I absolutely agree re:werewolf tropes, especially in romance. I want to read so many werewolf books, but So Many play into pack dynamics/violent werewolf bf/etc etc tropes that it feels nigh impossible to find something that will Hit for me specifically. Do you (or anyone who stumbles upon this) have any recs for werewolf media? Particularly that which is outside of romance as the main plot/genre? (Nothing against romance as a whole, I just don't tend to enjoy it when it's the main focus of a story)

god yeah im the exact same, its why i usually end up gravitating more towards horror werewolves cause at least then i dont normally have to worry about weird alpha boyfriend tropes lol. Being Human (US) is really good in a lot of places (one of my absolute favorite werewolf designs), but the last season really falls into a bunch of those werewolf bullshit tropes so i pretend it doesnt exist lol. i think the good bits outweigh the stupid though! I have also watched the UK version and its. not bad. i just didnt really get into it idk.

The Order 1886 barely feels like a werewolf game even though it is for sure a werewolf game lol. i would recommend just watching a playthru tho cause the gameplay is pretty much nothing but the plot and characters are very cool!!!!

Uhhhh everyone knows van helsing which is an objectively just an ok movie but the werewolves and vampires go so hard i have to like it. Dog Soldiers is also a fun campy flick, and i enjoyed werewolves within but thats more of a mystery than a genuine werewolf movie. Annndddd i did actually like the wolf man 2025 like. its gonna piss a lot of werewolf fans off i think and i know why people dont like it but i think the ideas and themes it presents are really interesting to me specifically! so idk if the individual werewolf enjoyer will like it in the same way i did but i will recommend it if u like werewolves that really lean into the disease/virus aspect of it.

Wilde Life is a webcomic that i really enjoy that is.... werewolf adjacent. I wouldnt really call Cliff a werewolf, more of a shapeshifter, but they sometimes call him a werewolf so its close enough for me to mention it and theres lots of other cool critters and scary bits to make the comic worth recommending.

I dont think Prague Race (webcomic) is officially available anymore but that also had some fun werewolves in it. You can probably find an archive of it if you google the name (the artist's new comic, 'tiger, tiger' is also very good but has nothing to do with werewolves lol)

How to be a werewolf is another webcomic that does do a bunch of the pack dynamic trope but the characters are charming and has some romance but it isn't the primary plot, its more about family than anything. and a female werewolf main character is always a plus!

Because there was def so much angst involved with Croc's childhood, it had to be traumatic to loose your whole family in one swoop: Xebec seemingly dead, Newgate left him behind for one reason or another (I also think everyone believed Croc dead for a while, I mean, if Roger can find Shanks in a chest after God Valley, then Croc can be found on some other random island as well, everyone believing him dead and he thinking he was abandoned - cue the angry feeling when he hears about the Whitebeard pirates and their Pops) and the whole crew, or what was left of them, scattered. And now years later, when Croc has come to terms that he's alone (even if he isnt, even if his father Whitebeard does actually care for him and yearns for some kind of relationship) and has built his own new family, his dad comes back and Croc is confronted with the fact that yes, actually, Xebec loved and does love him. How do you move on from that, when one of you had years to try to confront his tangled feelings about his childhood while the other one realizes that he left his child alone, that this child grew up without him and he has been left behind?

I love to imagine that they make it work, it involves therapy (Dragon: That's what you two call telling unlucky captured Marines/Pirates about your issues??) and tears. So many tears, even if both of them would deny it to their death.

And that's how we get the Xebec trailing after his oldest Granule (I fucking love that title omg) and seeing his ex again! Time for more angst with those two!! (Maybe Xebec becomes a hot topic for the WB pirates and they jokingly start referring to him as mom which ends up biting them in the ass when someone let's that name drop because they got used to it when Xebec visits them again to see his Granule: Newgate is mortified, Xebec a gremlin who gets a kick out of "stealing" the affection of "their" children. The family dinners would be disasters.)

Yes, I think there's a lot of potential for an interesting dynamic with Crocodile and Xebec having to come to terms with what happened back then - the abandonment and the realization that the abandonment happened even if it was an unfortunate accident! besides wolfgang's and ingrid's, i've also noticed that both desmond and toshiko being sagittarians fit their respective talents really well, considering the sagittarius sign is represented by a bow and arrow. desmond being the ultimate marksman (plus literally carrying arrows on his back) and toshiko, as the ultimate matchmaker, could be a reference to cupid and his arrows of love.

i also had a theory that jett being a gemini could be hint that he has a twin (gemini being latin for "twins", and their representation being twins: castor and pollux) it's a common trope that geminis are associated to lots of twin-related stuff, so why not!

as for cassidy also being a gemini, i interpret it more as her having this other part of herself that she hides from people, which her echo art also seem to imply, at least in my opinion.

continuing, i find it intriguing that ulysses is a pisces, a sign often associated with creativity, dreams, illusions, and escapism (due to being ruled by neptune). since i believe ulysses was neglected in his childhood, these symbolic themes really reinforces that for me.

there's also mark being an aquarius, which is interesting since despite being an air sign, it is represented by a vase of water/water bearer. i think it fits really well with mark's *alligator animal motif, since they are semi-aquatic animals. aquarians are also fairly known for having difficulty expressing themselves, which i think is correspondent to both mark and eva.

i believe aries is a sign that fits grace perfectly lol. if you know the stereotypical personality traits of being an aries (competitive, bold, impulsive) it's literally grace.

i find it kind of funny how jean is a cancer (water sign) since it is represented by a crab, which reminds me of his dislike for shellfish despite being a ship captain and all.

the virgo sign really suits diana; they're usually known for being helpful and people-pleasers yet are quite secretive about themselves, which describes diana perfectly. in that same respect, damon also fits the taurus sign well as they are particularly known for being hardworking and practical. with what we know of kai so far, i also think the interpretation that scorpios are often misunderstood people is a pretty good match for him.

At first it's a bit of an adjustment, you never really saw yourself being a teacher, but with the new Minister of Magic being who he was, this was the best job you could get.

You have to keep your identity as a vampire a secret, which is hard considering what you look like.

You're very grateful, really, even if the students all make fun of your long black clothing and overall dark aesthetic.

That's what made you notice Severus at first, he dressed a lot like you.

Long dark robes, pale skin, long dark hair, it was all very vampire.

You had asked Dumbledore if he was also a vampire, but he'd said no. You weren't quite convinced.

You always bumped into him at night, as a vampire, you didn't have to sleep so you would roam the halls in the moonlight, looking for something to do.

You seemed to bump into him every other night, gliding about the halls in his elegant robes.

He would nod at you and keep on walking, being terse but polite if you tried to engage him in conversation.

It bummed you out a little that he didn't seem to want to speak to you, as you wanted desperately to know more about him, feeling like he was in some way a kindred spirit.

The ministry cut funding to vampire support programs, meaning you were without your appetite suppressants.

It seemed backwards, hate vampires because they're 'dangerous' then make them even more potentially dangerous.

You feed on various small animals for a while until it becomes unsustainable.

When you come to him, the master potioneer, for help, you expect to be sent away.

Instead he is outraged on your behalf, muttering about the state of the ministry as he gathers up the ingredients to make your suppressants.

But it turns out he really isn't a vampire, to your surprise.

With a little convincing he agrees to make big batches so they can be sent out to other vampires too.

You start to spend much more time together as you help him brew and otherwise continually find yourself trying to repay him for what he's doing for you, despite him never asking for anything in return.

You bring him coffee and pastries, gorgeous blackbird feather quills, top-ups for his personal potion ingredient supply.

Yet he still seems tense around you, like he can't relax and he doesn't want you around, despite being polite.

It hurts, but you continue being kind and helpful, you owe him a lot after all.

You wish you understood why he disliked you, at first you thought it might be prejudice, but he has proven that isn't the case.

Every morning, like clockwork, a vial of suppressant appears on the windowsill of your quarters, delivered by one of the school owls.

On the morning of February 14th, an owl arrives with your suppressant, but also a dark red rose clutched carefully in it's talons, which it insists on dropping into your hand rather than onto the windowsill.

Severus has sent you a rose, on Valentine's day.

When you finally find him to ask him about it, he admits to being enchanted with you, but not really knowing how to act around you because of it.

Despite his nerves and apprehension, you begin a secret relationship (you don't want the students finding out).

You look like quite the couple as you walk around Hogsmeade arm in arm, him holding your black lace parasol to shield you from the sun, both in dark billowing robes.

You spend nights sat by the windowsill, reading your respective books in blissful silence.

Your limited ability to go outside during the summer months is hardly an issue for him, happy to stay home with you.

He often asks you to turn him into a vampire with you, but you refuse, knowing the ostracism he would face.

You agree that perhaps one day, in lieu of a traditional marriage, you will turn him so you can remain young together forever.

But it's a serious commitment so you want to wait, and he promises that he will wait as long as it takes.

He would probably fantasise about you biting his neck (that's as much as I'll say about that)

He will often sit and trace your face, describing your beauty to you as you can't see yourself in a reflection.

Then you will return the favour, even though he could easily go look for himself, yet he enjoys your kind words greatly, the handsomeness you describe not being what he sees in the mirror.

He is now a firm vampire advocate, harshly correcting students who express backwards opinions or pushing Dumbledore to demand changes in the ministry that might help you.

There is no doubt in his mind that he will one day be a vampire too and after a few years together, you finally turn him, binding your blood forever.

Not much changes in his life from being a vampire, only a life-long commitment to you is new.

But in his opinion, it is a great change.

I’m so happy I read this book, I adore Holly Black’s writing style and I hope all of the other books in this series are written like this. This is a shorter book than what I have gotten used to reading, but honestly everything about this book is perfect for me. I normally like spice in my books, and I was content with this story even without it. I had so so so much fun while reading this book that I never did my bookish habit of checking how many more pages I had until I was done. I already figured that I was going to love Jude because I saw fanart of her with her “horns” hairstyle and I’ve always wanted to do that hairstyle but for whatever reason was too scared to but once I saw her fanart, I was inspired to try and now I do that hairstyle often! I recently dyed my hair brown after 7 years of being blonde and had to do a big chop as well. I had to find things to make me feel more confident about the big change. The horns even help hide how short my hair is while I regrow it. I just knew that I was going to love Jude before reading this book and now that I finished the first book, I can say that I was right. She has to do a lot of uncomfortable things but still stays so empathetic and I love that. She is also so relatable because of it and her emotions are so valid and realistic feeling to read. She’s strong and so very brave. I admire her very much. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series and know everything there is to know. Sorry this was a bit of a ramble it’s exactly 2am now and I require sleep lol
