2019 - an attack is launched in picadilly circus, london, and price meets sgt. kyle garrick for the first time. together they aid farah karim, hadir karim, and alex keller in their quest to track down and neutralize stolen chemical gas from a raid in verdansk. hound is busy translating intel for the arw at the time, but when price asks them to join his task force later that year they accept without reservation.
2020 - simon “ghost” riley asks for backup he can trust in verdansk after a blown mission. price sends hound. several months later their knee is shot out when a mission goes south. price and ghost rush them to the nearest hospital. though difficult, the surgery is successful, and amidst fraught emotion price realizes that he loves hound. he does not tell them.
2021 - the situation in verdansk worsens. price keeps busy while hound undergoes intense physical therapy. they insist on helping sort through paperwork and translating intel after laswell suggests that an honorable discharge might be their best option.
2022 - hound is recovering after complications from a second surgery when general ghorbrani is assassinated and task force 141 is assigned to track down hassan zyani and several missing american bombs. they provide backup on comms as needed, filling in where laswell asks. not long after shadow company’s betrayal and the recovery of the stolen missiles in chicago, the 141 shifts its focus to makarov. hound is cleared for active duty and accompanies price on a black op in moscow. they interrogate one of makarov’s men. they plan to stage an ‘accident’, but when he threatens hound price shoots him point-blank. he and hound confess their feelings and sleep together for the first time. that christmas hound brings price home to their granddad, and soon after they convince him to get a flat together in kildare.
2023 - price is captured by makarov’s men after a mission goes sideways. hound and the rest of the 141 track him relentlessly, leading to his rescue from a not-so-abandoned gulag deep in the russian wilderness. hound tells price that they love him for the first time in the hospital afterwards. he doesn’t say it back until months later on a beautiful sunny day in a london park over leave, but they’ve both known all along.
2024 - price asks gaz to accompany him engagement ring shopping in london. after hours of searching they finally find the right one, and price proposes to hound just a few months later. gaz is asked to be the best man.
2025 - hound and price are married. they have a wonderful ceremony held in the church price grew up going to, though he’ll admit he never found much religion there until he saw hound walking towards him in white.

Appearance & Personality:
Angel has a slender build and is the tallest of the main cast of characters. He is estimated to stand around 8 feet with his heels on.
His fur is white and he has a mop of fluffy white hair that extends from both the front and back of his head, with splotches of light-pink across it. He also has a distinctive and focal light-pink heart pattern on the back of his head. The light-pink outline of a heart also encircles his chest, the bottom point of which extends past his waistband and down to his crotch area.
His eyelids are light pink and the color extends up to his eyebrows, giving the effect of eyeshadow, and his lashes are dark and thick.
His irises are cerise pink. His right eye has a light yellow sclera, his left eye has a dark sclera. He has a wide mouth full of sharp, pointed teeth and possesses a single golden fang that sits slightly to his right of center, a feature he shares with his boss, Valentino. He has three cerise-pink dots under each of his eyes, which are intended to evoke freckles, although they are actually another set of smaller eyes.
One of Angel's most noticeable features is his prominent chest. The chest is actually composed entirely of fluffy fur, however, which Angel intentionally pushes up into a breast-like formation with his tightly pinned jacket for show.
Angel's everyday attire consists of a long light pink suit-blazer with horizontal white stripes down the length, reddish-grey miniskirt, and long reddish-grey thigh-high heeled boots, accessorized with a reddish-grey bowtie with a cerise pink center and a black choker. On his top set of arms he wears long cerise pink gloves with white detailing at the cuffs, on his bottom set of arms he wears long white gloves.
Though usually depicted with six limbs, Angel has a third retractable set of arms that he usually keeps hidden but can summon at will.
In background artwork seen in the pilot, Angel Dust's feet resemble those of a spider's.
How would you describe Angel Dust’s personality?
• Reckless
• Sexual (OTT)
• Sarcastic
• Sharp-witted
• Destructive
• Playful
• Vulgar
• Confident (excessive)
• Flippant
• Callous
• Cynical
<> Particularly about the idea of redemption however has a small hopeful part that it’s possible for him
As Anthony:
• Defensive
• Family orientated
• Shy
<> Through copping constant abuse from Valentino which would often make him nervous in his presence
• Hopeful
• Self assertive (outside the Porn Studios contract)
• Volatile
• Comedic (genuinely)
• Inferior
<> Seen when Charlie declared Sir Pentious as “official patron” at the Hazbin Hotel
• Attentive
<> Seen when Angel Dust rejected Cherri Bomb’s offered drugs after Husk mentioned about “undoing his progress”
• Protective
• Traumatised (via “Poison” at the end)
• Broken
Trivia:
• When it comes to physical contact Angel Dust always backs away (which is common in SA victims) seen with both Husk in “Masquerade” to bring him back to the hotel and Vaggie when throwing him off the building for a trust exercise
• The more Angel Dust (Anthony) gets upset the more his (New Yorker) accent gets thicker and automatically breaks out of his persona
• If Angel Dust hadn’t died at 30 years old he would have been around the same age as Husk if not somewhere between 12 years younger
<> However Angel is actually older than Husk down in Hell because he died first (which is kinda cool)
• Angel & Charlie have a “brother/sister” relationship (both Headcanon and implied but not confirmed)
• In a earlier draft of Angel’s character it appeared that when he blushed it showed on his upper body (face and chest area)
• Blake Roman (Angel Dust’s VA in the Hazbin Hotel series) is a huge Huskerdust fan
• Angel Dust’s birthday lands on April Fools Day (which explains he loves pranks so much 🤭)
• The name Anthony may come from the word "antonia", which means "priceless/praiseworthy and or beautiful".
<> His real name officially appears in the episode "Masquerade", signed on Valentino's soul contract.
• "Angel Dust" is Angel's chosen all-encompassing persona name, and one he uses exclusively in place of his actual name. It is intended as multipurpose for both his drag queen persona and his sex-work persona.[30] It is also a possible reference to his mode of death, a drug overdose.
* Whenever Angel is outside of work and doesn't feel the need to maintain his public persona, he prefers to dress in very cozy, comfortable, unsexualized clothing.
• In an earlier development stream, when asked if Angel is venomous, Vivziepop stated she did not think Angel was venomous due to being based on the jumping spider. However, she returns to this in a later stream, stating that Angel's bite may be venomous. But, that venom in Hell can't actually kill anyone, it just causes temporary pain or disfigurement and making them fall ill.
• During the gang war with Sir Pentious, when Angel's shadow is cast behind him, it appears much larger than him, with six arms and glowing red eyes. This implies that Angel can possibly transform into a larger form like other sinner demons.

egg yegg
Contradictory assessments. First recorded in 1925–30, Americanism; of obscure origin; the proposals that the word is from German Jäger “hunter” or that it is the surname of a well-known safecracker are both very dubious. Or how about a fictitious safecracker? Popularized by the Pinkerton agency detectives. The 1900 "Proceedings of the 26th annual convention of the American Bankers' Association," whose members were protected by the Pinkerton's National Detective Agency, reported a letter dated Nov. 23 or 24, 1899, returning $540, taken earlier that year, to the Scandinavian-American Bank of St. Paul, Minn., noting that the thieves had been so hounded by detectives that they gave up the gains and advised the bank to advertise that it was a member of the American Bankers Association, because "the American Bankers Association is too tough for poor 'grafters.'" The letter supposedly was signed "John Yegg," but this was said to be a pseudonym and the report identified the man arrested later in the case as William Barrett. Though / AND Its earliest known use in print is from a 1901 New York Times article. This same article also includes the first known print use of the variant yeggmen. Goo Goo g'joob.
A jolt on Archie's head.
I think the revising editors are just screwing around with this one.

Notes from The Tale of Prince Steven of Avalon
OKAY so I decided that instead of going back and editing this fic's notes and risking nobody seeing the relevant info that I desperately want to share, I'd stick it here! (I'm calling it the Ficcyclopedia™.) SO! If you have any interest at all in the inner workings of my brain in regards to this fic, it's all below the cut. 💜
In the first chapter, these are the relevant tidbits, neatly sorted because my OCD said to.
Places:
The original fairy tale takes place in Ireland, and I kept that the same, save for the name of the kingdom. Avalon is a play on the land Tír na nÓg, which is the mystical "otherworld" in Irish mythology. Avalon is just another name for "paradise" or afterlife, basically. I wanted something pronounceable, so this happened. It also is really fitting with Steve's character (both in this story and in MCU canon), in my opinion.
I basically decided to run with the whole "Bucky is probably Jewish" Fanon thing, and decided his mother was possibly (in my head most likely) from Poland. Thus, a lot of locations and names and things stemmed from Polish culture and mythology. So, bouncing off of the whole "Avalon-is-based-on-Irish-afterlife" thing, I named Bucky's homeland Verais (Vehr-eye) as the phonological equivalent of Wyraj, which is the afterlife in Polish mythology. And yes, it is spelled a little prettier than just phonetics, because I said so.
In conjunction with the Verais thing, I named the people there the Lechian people, which is for Lechia, an ancient name for Poland.
"The Land of Ice" is a pretty obvious (to me) way of saying Russia.
Gidra is Russian for Hydra. Do with that what you will. ;)
Names/Creatures:
The name Drew means "from druids" which is a play on the fact that in the original story of Conn-Eda, the prince's stepmother was the daughter of a druid. I wanted to include that little thing, even if it wasn't exactly the same.
His last name, Balcombe, means "person who casts an evil eye." It's also a surname that's common to the Isle of Man, which is the place I based Drew's homeland off of.
In the original fairy tale, the supernatural hound is called Samer. Samer means lots of different things in many languages, but my favorite was the Sanskrit for "air" or "wind." I turned it kind of Polish and gave the hound the name Zenon, which is derived from the Greek god Zeus. And Zeus, as we know, is the god of the skies or whatever. ;P This one is a bit more convoluted, but I think it still works.
Even though "Alkonost" seems like a made-up word, IT'S NOT!!! It's the English pronunciation of Алконост. The Alkonost is a woman-headed bird in Russian mythology. And the creature that Conn-Eda goes to see in the original fairy tale is a bird with the face of a human. This one took me ages to find, but I did it for you guys. :D (JK I really did it for me, but y'all benefit, so.) (Also, in chapter two, I made the Alkonost a man. I know it's not perfectly in line with the mythology, but it's really important to me that it be a guy, okay? You'll see why.)
Almaz is the English pronunciation of алмаз, which means "diamond." I wanted the stone Alexander gives Steve to be something precious, but also Russian, because reasons.
Movyatzekon is a semi-made-up word for talking horse, strung together from the words "talking" and "horse" in Polish.
In a related vein, the horse breed that I imagine Bucky is is called a Gypsy Vanner. I picked it because it has famously shaggy hair (and so does Bucky at certain points in Marvel canon!!). The very specific horse I envision for Bucky is in the moodboard above.
Misc. Stuff:
Mulct is an actual word!! It means "a fine, or compulsory payment." Basically, it's the punishment Steve gets for losing the challenge his stepfather gives him.
Variola is an ancient name for smallpox. I chose this as the disease Steve's dad dies from in the fairy tale because, canonically, he dies from mustard gas exposure. Mustard gas exposure can cause skin lesions that can mimic the look of smallpox.
And chapter two stuff, which is literally only places:
Steve and Bucky pass through a kingdom called Albion, which is a very ancient name for England (going back as far as 5th century B.C.E.). Guess where on the map I imagine it is? Yes, you're right. It's England. ;D
They also pass through a land called Veneti, which is named for an ancient west-Slavic tribe called Veneti. It's meant to be where Belarus is, roughly.
Chapter three stuff, which is one measly thing:
(in reference to the chapter title) Travail: painful or laborious effort
If you want to talk about where certain MCU characters come into play, you can always scream at me in whatever way you want! I am probably disproportionately excited about how I've managed to work in so many MCU characters in general, so it's a whole thing in my brain now.
And if you read all the way to the bottom of this long-ass post, thank you and I love you. I mean, I'll love y'all regardless of whether you read the post, but yeah. ✌🏻
#Raven rambles#The Tale of Prince Steven of Avalon#as seen on ao3#you can click the moodboard to get to the story if you wanna#I feel like I am so fucking awkward for posting this ngl#but I'm doing it anyway#Stucky fic#my writing#fan fiction#I'll just go before I start rambling in the tags too

Brief Biological info:
Name: Genevieve Bellerose
Age: 19 (Professor Killings era), 29 (canon events)
Gender: Female
Occupation: Cosmetic chemist
__________________________________________
“A cosmetic chemist that works to bring about a new era of healthy, better-quality Beauty products directed towards the ladies of all social classes starting from London and to include Great Britain. Resolves to become the voice of empowerment for Victorian women who want to embrace their femininity and enhance their own beauty through her vision. She hopes to a inspire a future in which make-up is no longer frowned upon through the magic of her home-made ingredients!
“A refined typical victorian lady who possesses the most gentle and mature yet also firm and strong aura, like a flower that can please you with its appearance and smell but also cause harm to you if you touch its spikes ….This is how Genevieve Bellerose is described. Her life takes a big turn when Lady Baskerville and other important characters enter her life.”
*******************************
Trivia:
— Partially inspired by the Sherlock Holmes adventures: The Hound of the Baskervilles, and to give Shu Takumi’s Lady Baskerville a direct family relative (aside from Iris) , Genevieve was born! :D
— Baskerville is Genevieve’s true surname, but was later changed to cover up her illegitimate birth as that would’ve cause a great scandal.
— Given that the original author Shu Takumi did not provide a name for Lady Baskerville, I decided to give her a fanon name: Charlotte Rose Baskerville.
— Charlotte Baskerville, to the utter dismay of her father who didn’t want to have anything to do with Genevieve, made sure to regularly send telegrams and gifts to her (consisted of accessories, fancy dresses, cosmetics...), often inviting her to the Baskerville family mansion, and even encouraged her to follow what she wishes for, ultimately inspiring the latter to create cosmetics for the women. (Lady Baskerville as a good older sister figure being a direct parallel to Klint van Zieks lets gooo!)

A Proper Knight
Pairing: Jorah Mormont x reader
Requested by: anon ‘Okay, but also, imagine a low born girl falling in love with Jorah because she sees him as an honourable knight like the ones she heard from the stories and he doesn’t understand how she can think so highly of them... and they fall in love <3’
Warnings: talk of war, description of violence (including murder and rape), implied PTSD, younger woman/older man
Gif creds to owner
“Wait here,”
You did as the Unsullied soldier asked, waiting behind the heavy door of the Great Hall of Winterfell, brushing imaginary dust off your simple dress. It was your best one, albeit much plainer than even some of the servant girls of Winterfell, and you were self conscious.
You had come to pledge your allegiance against the Lannisters, to the King in the North, or to Lady Sansa Stark. You would pledge your allegiance to almost anyone so long as it was against the Lannisters- you still remembered your mother’s screams as a Lannister bannerman raped her before slitting her throat.
The door opened and the clamour of the lords and ladies inside trailed off as the unsullied soldier directed you forward. “Lady YN of house...” you stared hard at the maester as he squinted at his scroll. You were the last name on his list, crammed in after all of the nobles due to your status as a bastard.
You stood awkwardly, feeling the eyes of everyone staring at you- the lords and ladies behind you staring and murmuring, and the occupants of the head table: Jon Snow, Sansa, Arya and Bran Stark and Daenerys Targaryen, who was accompanied by a man and woman you did not recognise.
“What is your name, my Lady?” Jon Snow asked, quietening down the restless hall.
You looked around, worrying your lip between your teeth. “I-I...” you began, before clearing your throat. “Don’t call me ‘Lady’” you blurted out, resulting in murmuring scattered throughout the hall. “I’m sorry, I-”
“What’s your name, girl? It’s a simple enough question!” One man heckled and you sighed, beginning to turn away.
“Stop. Lord Glover, be quiet,” Arya quipped. “Go on, what’s your name,”
“And your house, if you please. You neglected to include that in your letter,” the maester added.
You took a deep breath. “My name is YN. I- I don’t have a house, I’m sorry. I’ve come to pledge my allegiance against the Lannisters,”
“And your surname? The name of your father,” the maester asked, dipping his quill.
You bit your lip. “I- I don’t know who my father is. I’m a bastard. Just put YN Snow. I’ve come to pledge my allegiance to the King in the North,”
There was a brief silence before Jon spoke. “There is no king in the north. I’ve bent the knee,” you turned to Bran, given that he was Ned Stark’s surviving true born son. “To Daenerys of House Targaryen,”
You frowned briefly, staring curiously at the dragon queen. “They say you have dragons, as big as a house. Is that true?” You asked. “Your grace,” you added quickly.
Daenerys smiled slightly. “Bigger,” she said with a smirk.
“Then Cersei Lannister and the Mountain that Rides ought to fire-proof their buildings,” you said. “If you’ll have me, I’d like to... well, I can’t fight, not with a sword at least. But I can fire an arrow in a straight line and that’s something. And if you don’t want me on the battlefield, I can cook, and my mother taught me to repair clothes, and my brother taught me how to sharpen blades. Just because I’m a bastard, doesn’t mean I’m not useful. Isn’t that right, Jon Snow?” Jon smiled slightly and nodded, seeing the twinkle in Brienne of Tarth and Lyanna Mormont’s eye as you spoke.
Slowly, every member of the head table nodded their heads. As you were beginning to seek out an empty seat, Daenerys spoke up. “Ser Jorah with help you refine your archery,” she said, gesturing to the tall man behind her. You looked at him properly for the first time. He was old, old enough to be your father at least, and handsome. “Yes, your grace,” you said.
**
“Draw the string back to your ear. These bows are probably stiffer than you’re used to, so really pull,”
You nodded, your hand trembling by your ear with the effort of holding back the string. You were eager to impress Ser Jorah Mormont- he was the first proper knight you had ever seen, and the first person more noble than a true born commoner you had had a proper conversation with.
“Loose,” he said and you did as you were bid. You turned to get a new arrow, assuming that one had missed the target, but as you were knocking it, you looked up. Ser Jorah was smiling. “Impressive. If that were a soldier, he’d be floored,” you smiled bashfully, fumbling and dropping your new arrow. Jorah smiled softly, picking it up and handing it to you, smiling softly at you from the ground.
He found you endearing, and he knew from your speech in the great hall that you were a force to be reckoned with. “Here. I think we’ll be able to hit the bullseye by the end of the day,” he said, moving behind you. “Knock,” he murmured, observing your movements. “Draw... turn your hips ever so slightly to the left, your arm will follow,”
“Like this?” You murmured, eyes focused completely on the target in front of you.
“Exactly like that. Loose,” you held your breath as you let go and watched the arrow soar towards... the bullseye!
“Well done, My Lady,” Jorah said softly.
“Ser Jorah, I’m not a lady. Why D’you keep calling me that?”
“It’s... polite, I suppose. And it’s a habit by now,”
“You really are a proper knight, aren’t you?” You teased, going to collect the arrows that littered the target.
“I mean... I’m a Ser, if that’s what you mean. I was made a knight by a monarch,”
“That doesn’t make you a proper knight. You’re like the ones in the songs and the tales. A gallant, generous, brave man, with honour and dignity and all the things that we sing about,”
Jorah smiled fondly and shook his head. “I’ve done bad things, YN. I’ve killed people,”
“So have I. So has Jon Snow,”
“You’ve killed?”
You froze, before nodding, turning away from him. “When I was fifteen, two Lannister knights broke into our home. They murdered my baby sister. They took turns raping my mother, then they slit her throat, for the crime of being a northerner, and for recognising Robb Stark as king,”
“What did you do?” Jorah said softly, approaching you slowly, as if you were a doe about to bolt away. “You can tell me. You won’t get into trouble for it,”
“One of the soldiers was huge. I thought he was the Hound at first, but he had no burns. It was his brother, the Mountain. The other knight told him to ride on, to find another village to ransack while he... finished with my mother. I was hiding in the pantry, and I took the knife that was on the table, still covered in my sister’s blood. A-and I crept up behind him as he wiped his hands on my mother’s dress... and... and...” you shuddered, remembering the heat of the blood over your hands, the way you scrubbed and scrubbed at them in a nearby river, the way you vomited at the thought of the Lannister knight’s corpse covering your mother’s...
“And that’s why you came here?” Jorah said quietly. You were leaning into his chest now as he rocked you, rubbing your back.
“Mm... they weren’t proper knights. They weren’t noble or gallant... they attacked two women and a baby in the dead of night. They had no honour. They were not just. You may think you are a bad knight, Ser Jorah, but what I saw that night... nobody could be worse than that. Goodnight, Ser,” you mumbled, pulling away from him as you made your way to your allocated room, dazed. Jorah stared after you, his heart twinging with more than just sympathy...

OC Names Tag Game (pt. 3)
once more, thanks to @belorage for enabling me to do this, haha
If you’d like to play, the name of the game is character name meanings and any relevant reasoning you may have for your choices
F/O, G/T/A, and T/E/S kids:
KATE ANTILLES
Kate: origin, shortened form of Catherine/Katherine meaning “pure”. ngl, i almost always make my first save file named “Kate” until i come up with an actual character name and backstory...however, my LW remained without a first name for a long while and by the time i thought to give her one, only “Kate” fit in my mind at that point so it stuck lmfao. also works that her mother’s canon name is “Catherine” so she was named in honor of her.
Antilles: Caribbean origin, name of a chain of islands. Taken from the Star Wars character, Wedge Antilles
JEM
Jem: English origin, shortened form of “James” or “Jemima”. Play on words for “gem” and “jem” and how she takes a sarcastic comment calling her a “gem” and chooses that for her name. Also taken from James “Jem” Coughlin from the 2010 film “The Town”, and a similar reasoning he gives for his nickname
DECKARD CONNOR MURPHY GRANT
Deckard: Taken from Rick Deckard of the 1982 film “Blade Runner”
Connor: Irish-Gaelic origin, meaning “lover of hounds”. Taken from Sarah Connor of The Terminator film series
Murphy: Irish-Gaelic origin, meaning “sea warrior”. Taken from Alex Murphy of the 1987 film “Robocop”
Grant: English-Scottish origin, meaning “tall” or “large”. Taken from Dr. Alan Grant, from the 1990 book and 1993 film “Jurassic Park”
NATHAN ALEXANDER GRANT
Nathan: Hebrew origin, meaning “he has given” or “he will give”. Just the game-given name for Sole’s husband that i rolled with, no other reason behind it.
Alexander: Greek origin, meaning “defender of men/mankind”. Just had nice flow with Nathan/Nate, so i picked it for that reason alone
Grant: English-Scottish origin, meaning “tall” or “large”. Taken from Dr. Alan Grant, from the 1990 book and 1993 film “Jurassic Park”
ALESSANDRA ISABELLA FORELLI
Alessandra: Italian origin, form of “Alexandra”, meaning “defender of mankind”. Chosen for Italian origins and the number of nicknames that can be derived from it, including “Sandy” which is the name she is most known by, haha
Isabella: Italian origin, variant of “Isabel” and therefore also “Elizabeth”, meaning “devoted to god”. Chosen for Italian origins and its aesthetic appeal
Forelli: Italian origin. Sandy is the younger sister of Sonny Forelli, the main antagonist of Vice City, and thus also shares his family surname.
EVA MARIE RUSSELL FORELLI
Eva: Hebrew origin, variant of “Eve”, meaning “life”. Just liked its short, briefness, especially since her first name is not all that important to this character, haha.
Marie: French origin, variant of the Latin “Mary”, meaning “star of the sea” or “of the sea”. Just sounded nice paired with “Eva”
Russell: French-Old Norse origin, meaning “red headed”. Taken from Russell “Stringer” Bell of the tv series “The Wire”
Forelli: Italian origin. Russ is the bastard child of Sonny Forelli and eventually takes her father’s name for herself after leaving Liberty City with her lover, Claude.
VESPER
Vesper: Latin origin, meaning “evening star”. Named for Vesper Lynd from the James Bond book/film “Casino Royale”
LYRA
Lyra: Greek origin, meaning “Lyre”. Name taken from Lyra Erso from the Star Wars film “Rogue One”.
SONYA
Sonya: Russian origin, variant of “Sophia”, meaning “wisdom”. Named in honor of Sonya Blade from Mortal Kombat
#Seba|Faras|Lilandra don't fulfill the criteria for this game - they have no real 'origins' outside of fictional names and naming conventions#and then my other OCs i either don't talk about enough or no one would care about lmao - so here's the last part!

BATCHES OF SIX
________________________________________________________________
Some thoughts about ‘series of five’ and ‘batches of six’ - about pips, busts, bombs, memory sticks and empty houses - in Sherlock BBC.
Series of ‘five’ are not uncommon in Sherlock BBC. Most famously there are the ‘five Greenwich pips’ in TGG, paralleled by the ‘five orange pips’ in TAB, respectively the five bust owners in TST.
But also this: Sherlock becomes the fifth victim in ASIP and John the fifth hostage of the bomber in TGG. In THOB there are five separate biographies of Thatcher, five floors at Baskerville and five scientists worked on project HOUND. Five different residues are left behind in the kidnapper’s footprint in TRF, while five networks are closing in on Baker Street. Mr Shilcott, the train enthusiast from TEH, has repaired his hat five times very neatly and in TSOT Major Sholto sits at table nr 5 while five women work for him who deny too quickly that they have secrets and Sherlock mentions five funny stories in his best man speech. There are five murdered husbands in TAB, five bust owners in TST and in TFP Sherlock has to solve five tasks at Sherrinford. More examples can be found throughout the story and I haven’t included all the occasions when timespans of ‘fives’ (seconds, minutes, years) are mentioned.
A lot has been written about the topic of ‘five’ over the course of the years. On a first glance the six Thatcher busts don’t seem to fit that pattern ... unless one takes the five owners (‘Who’s a fan of Maggie T?) also into account. Series of five linked to batches of six actually turn up several times in Sherlock BBC and this looks like a really interesting pattern.
TBC below the cut .....
Busts and bombs - cases and series:
TST Case One: The Welsboroughs - entirely new characters and a new story have been created for Sherlock BBC, The Six Thatchers. As mentioned in this post, the surname chosen for the family sounds very much like WELL’s BURROW - ‘digging a hole in the ground to get water’. Only two episodes later a well, deliberately flooded with water, old bones resting at its bottom, plays a major role. (Two times Charles The skull - the friend Sherlock and his skull)
And so it begins: Sherlock desperately waits for a new case that might be somehow connected to ‘the late’ Jim Moriarty. Finally DI Lestrade comes to Baker Street and seeks Sherlock’s help in a mysterious case. David Welsborough, who occupies a certain postion in the british government, has lost a family member. One week after Mr Welsborough’s fiftieth birthday, his son Charlie, allegedly on vaccation in Tibet, had been found dead in his car in front of his family’s house. By accident, a drunken driver (chemically affected transport operator), chased by the police, had chrushed into it. Both cars exploded, the drunken driver survived and Charlie’s body was found, burned to a crisp. Sherlock deduces that the young man must have secretly returned from Tibet to surprise his father at his birthday party. During the phonecall between father and son, Charlie had ‘some kind of fit’ and died, hidden in his car behind an extra seat cover, without anyone noticing it. It looks like ‘the fit’ must have been triggered by the flashlight of his father’s phone, whom Charlie had asked to take a picture of the blue actionman on the bonnet of his car. At some point between flashlight and explosion an intruder entered Welsbourough’s house, took the Thatcher bust and smashed it just outside the door. Because of this, Sherlock has the strange feeling that a great game has just started anew and that there’s still a loose thread in the world which needs to be picked at. Meanwhile Mycroft, unsuccessfully, wants to get him interested in the theft of the Black Pearl of the Borgias, that got lost in the East.
Series One ... Sherlock desperately waits for the moment to be consulted in a new case. Finally DI Lestrade comes to Baker Street and seeks Sherlock’s help in a mysterious case of serial suicides. Four people are dead because the driver of the car they got into, turned out to be a serial killer who uses chemistry as murder weapon and is sponsored by a mysterious ‘Moriarty’. The murderer communicates with the pink ladie’s pink phone. Dr John Watson has returned from the East and seeks new lodgings. He moves in with Sherlock and becomes his blogger aka his PA. A precious little thing - a reptile-shaped, green hairpin from the Far East - gets smuggled to London and finds its final destination on the head of a fair-haired PA. Mycroft Holmes, who occupies a minor position in the government, has lost something very important. He comes to Baker Street and tries, unsucessfully, to engange his brother to retrieve a memory stick with plans for a top secret missile defense system, presumably taken by a Mr West. It turns out that this case is just one among five more, all of them arranged by a fascinating ‘consulting criminal’. They are communicated through the dublicate of the pink lady’s pink phone and all of them are quite explosive. A really great game starts and Sherlock expects that something new and exciting might be coming. Five pips, five bombs strapped to five hostages and a pair of shoes lead Sherlock back where he began - back to the pool in which once Carl Powers died, because he had ‘some kind of fit’ in the water and drowned. Now, twenty years later, Sherlock faces Carl’s murderer, master criminal Jim Moriarty, at the very same pool. It becomes clear that this man is the driving force behind the explosive great game and the pink case. Instead of returning the retrieved memory stick to his brother, Sherlock offers it Jim as a getting-to-know-you present.
The memory stick with the secret missile plans sinks deep into the water and a bomb is ready to explode ...
TST Case Two: Mohandes Hassan - another bust gets smashed. Appart from name and address the owner remains invisible. The combination of the names chosen for this character has the potential to connect two important aspects of the story.
Mohandes means ‘Servant of Mohana’. That’s the male and female epiphet of three gods, who represent the greatest powers in the universe: creation, destruction, transformation, protection, compassion, love, lust and desire. Mohana (deluding) is also the name of one of the five ‘missiles’ of Kama, the winged god of sexual love, lust and desire (Cupid, Amor).
Hassan - in its Gaelic form ‘Ó hOsáin’ means ... ‘descendant of the fawn’ of the ‘little deer’ and is closely connected to Londonderry, Ireland. Other words for stag are hart and deer, which invites to a nice word play ... deer/dear, hart/heart. (Sherlock, the Stag and the Skull)
Series Two ... Sherlock starts wearing the deerstalker hat (Stalking the Deerstalker). Dominatrix Irene Adler and Jim Moriarty, Mrs and Mr Sex ... the female and male representatives of sexuality ... make their appearace and challenge Sherlock to play their game. The character Molly Hooper, romantic love (John’s mirror), slowly starts growing until she becomes ‘the one who always counted’ (It’s always you. John Watson). On Christmas Eve Irene and Molly leave almost identical and colour-coordinated gifts for Sherlock at Baker Street. Sherlock opens only that of Irene. Molly’s gift stays untouched. Sherlock gives Irene’s phone, full of secret informations, away. When he gets it back, it is empty. In the next episode the HOUND arises and affects the mind with a new deliriant drug which renders anyone exposed to it incredibly suggestible, deluding them into seeing a monstrous hound from hell. This drug also causes ‘severe frontal lobe damage, blood-brain and gross cranial trauma’. Immediately after the Baskerville case Mycroft releases Jim Moriarty from prison. As a consequence the Reichenbach Fall follows and leaves both - Sherlock and Jim - with shattered skulls on the ground. (Coffin for love)
TST Case Three: Dr Barnicot - a third bust gets smashed. When Sherlock looks at the shards inside a plastic bag, the doctor’s broken bust merges for several short seconds with Sherlock’s face and gives the impression of a crumbling mask - a facade - that starts running down his face. Sherlock puts the remnants of the bust under his microscope and investigates the fragments closely. On it, he finds a drop of blood (information) from the one who broke it. Toby the bloodhound is fetched to follow the scent of chemistry: haemoglobin, caffeine & whiskey (two drugs with opposite effects) and the ‘H-Family’. In the end the trace gets lost in a puddle of blood at a meat market (like a tree in a wood, a book in a bookcase, ...). The identity of the bust smasher remains hidden, yet Sherlock is convinced that none other than Jim Moriarty must be the ultimate cause for the demolition of the busts.
Series Three ... is dominated by Sherlock’s investigation of Mary Morstan, the woman he marries to John Watson. Sherlock announces Mary’s pregnancy. Later he takes on a case that revolves about secrets and scandals and he starts to consume drugs (chemistry) deliberately. Unexpectedly Mary turns out to be at the centre of that case. To guard her secret and to keep John in the dark, she is even willing to eliminate Sherlock. Her face is projected on the facade of twin houses that are Sherlock’s property. A memory stick with secret informations, marked A.G.R.A., that are meant to be Mary’s initials, burns in a fire. But in the end all traces get lost in a puddle of blood - first Sherlock’s, then Magnussen’s, who is the keeper of a mind palace full of secrets and scandals. The cupboard is bare and all the informations are gone. The series ends with Jim Moriarty back on every TV screen in the country and Sherlock has to go deeper into himself in order to solve the case.
Alternatively ...
TAB takes Sherlock back to his historical roots and starts a new cycle of his experiment, focussing mainly on two aspects, represented by Emelia and Jim - Ghost Sister and Mr Sex, who turn out to be closely connected. Jim’s bombs become Emelia’s orange pips and the master criminal hides behind ghost sister’s veil. Contrary to Sherlock’s conviction, nothing can be found beneath Ghost Sister’s coffin. Again ‘the cupboard is bare’, as Mycroft puts it. Sherlock follows Jim down the abyss into the Reichenbach cauldron out of his own free will and then he reruns his experiment once more. But this time Sherlock changes his approach of ‘the problem’. He adds a different prefix to his equation, one he’s never used before ... LOVE.
TST Case Four: Orrie Harker - Sherlock investigates the origin of the targeted busts. The trail leads into the East, to the supplier Gelder & Co from Tiblisi in Georgia. It gets clear that a batch of six identical busts is involved in the game. The moment Sherlock knows names and addresses of the two remaining bust owners - Harker and Sandeford - DI Lestrade phones Sherlock from the next crime scene. When Lestrade confirms that the latest victim is indeed Harker, Sherlock is convinced that the bust smasher is chasing the Black Pearl of the Borgias. On the way to the crime scene, he starts to research that theft on his phone. At the late Miss Orrie’s place Sherlock learns that this time not just one but two identical busts got smashed at the same time. Now only one possible victim remains - Jack Sandeford of Reading - and Sherlock is on his way.
The surname ‘Harker’ is that of the journalist from canon but the first name 'Orrie' has been specifically chosen for this adaption. It’s unisex but more often used for boys than girls. Furthermore it's old fashioned, even ancient - the name of a famous Gaelic king, a viking, a pirate, a dominator of the Irish Sea.
(Side note: Sherlock mentions five proposals for John’s hidden middle name in TSOT - H, Henry, Humphry, Higgins - before Hamish is revealed. Higgins, the fourth, is Irish and means ‘Viking’. The Hamish Investigation)
Miss Orrie’s twin busts got smashed at the same time. She’s a woman lying dead in the garden, dressed in blue. The culprit destroys the twin busts inside the house but kills Miss Orrie outside in the garden. Sounds a bit odd and it reminds me of two other women whose fate is linked to a ‘GARDEN’:
Jennifer Wilson, the woman lying dead on the floor, dressed in pink. She worked in the media (like Harker from canon), lost a stillborn daughter and died in an empty house at Lauriston Gardens - in a derelict children’s room.
Mary Watson’s secret begins to unfold and as a consequence, her fate is sealed, from the moment, when Sherlock projects her face on the facade of the empty houses at Leinster Gardens. Mary is pregnant.
A hammer is used to destroy Miss Orrie’s first bust. Then a hand in a black glove turns the shards around. When nothing is found, the hand reaches for the second bust and flings it hard down on the table right amidst the shards of the first one. The second bust is just as empty as the first. This flashback sequence about the smashing of a couple of busts is framed on both ends by transitions to scenes with Mary and John, the Watson couple (here).
Series Four ... two characters get shot and although different guns are used, both incidents are visually linked to the same gun. (The smoking gun 1 & The smoking gun)
by the end of TST Mary is shot by Vivian Norbury (Mycroft=intellect)
by the end of TLD John is shot by Eurus (Sherlock=emotions)
Two busts - two facades - are destroyed at the same time - Mary and Dr Watson - the ‘wife’ and the ‘eternal friend’. But both busts turn out to be empty - just as empty as Magnussen’s cupboard in HLV. Like Mycroft, standing beside the ‘faithful sister’s grave’ in TAB, one is tempted to say: “Oh dear. The cupboard is bare.” At this point the whole bust smasher case is very much unsolved. No solution in sight, just the conviction that one bust and it’s owner are still out there. The remaining owner’s first name is JACK (synonym: little John/Johnny) but the true identity of the person who actually destroyes the plaster busts (masks/facades) is still entirely in the dark. Sherlock more than ever suspects an involvement of the late Jim Moriarty.
The hammer blows that destroy Miss Orrie’s first bust with violent force, remind me of John’s brutal attack on Sherlock in the morgue, while the gloved hand that covers the second bust’s mouth, has some resemblance with Culverton Smith’s equally gloved hand, when he tries to suffocate Sherlock in his favourite room ... both happens in TLD. In the next episode, Sherlock as well as John are called ‘pirates’ and they enter a ship to reach Sherrinford, a high-security prison island where Sherlock’s secret sister is held captive. And by the end of TFP a Viking lies motionless on the floor in the livingroom of 221b Baker Street. The whole story still feels very much unsolved.
TST Case Five: Jack Sandeford - Sherlock knows that Mr Sandeford will be the bust smasher’s last victim. He reaches Sandeford’s house by nightfall and observes how the man tells his daughter to get out of the pool because it’s time to go to bed and he has ‘things to do’ now. Mr Sandeford puts out the lights and when father and daughter leave the rooms, Sherlock enters the pool area and waits for the one who is responsible for the demolition of the busts (facades). A clock shows 19:00. Three hours pass. It’s later than 22:00 when the anticipated intruder shows up, his face unrecognizable under a black balaclava and a hooded shirt. He carries a black bag, intended to transport the plaster bust. The ensuing confrontation between Sherlock and the bust smasher proceeds in three stages:
1... Sherlock approaches the black-dressed person silently from behind before he suddenly starts speaking (very much like in Magnussen’s bedroom). When the intruder becomes aware of Sherlock, the person quickly turns round and (like Mary in Magnussen’s bedroom) points a gun at Sherlock. This time though Sherlock is able to knock the gun aside before it is fired. There is a short but very intense and violent fight. It pauses when Sherlock pulls the black mask from the intruder’s face - who turns out to be a man - and starts to confront the bust smasher with deductions about how the Black Pearl of the Borgias must have found its way into the bust. Completely taken aback the intruder asks Sherlock who he is. When Sherlock tells his name, the man responds with: ‘Good bye, Sherlock Holmes’ (Ciao, Sherlock Holmes, Jim TGG) and then ...
2... the man hurls himself at Sherlock and togehter they crash through a glass window into the swimming pool. There’s another severe and desperate fight in the water. Sherlock just barely manages to escape and get out of the pool. He runs into the adjoining room where the plaster bust still lies in the bag on the floor. Sherlock grabs the bust and uses it to hit the attacker over the head. The bust smasher drops to the ground and Sherlock starts talking again. He wants to know about the intruder’s connections to Jim Moriarty. The man on the floor has no idea what Sherlock is talking about and tells him so. Confident and sure of himself, that he’s solved the case, Sherlock throws the last plaster bust with force on the floor to reveal the Black Pearl of the Borgias.
But it's not a pearl that comes to the light of day next to that swimming pool in Jack’s house ... it’s a memory stick with secret informations!
3... while Sherlock stares in bewilderment at the A.G.R.A. memory stick lying amidst the broken pieces of the bust, the bust smasher uses the opportunity and takes hold of his gun again. In a flashback Sherlock sees John, at Christmas in the Holmes cottage, throwing Mary’s A.G.R.A. memory stick into the fire where it burns. ‘I don’t understand ... she, she destroyed it’ is all he can think of to say. The moment the bust smasher hears Sherlock talkig about ‘she’, in association with the smashed bust and its content, he suddenly knows that the woman he is after, must be the same Sherlock is talking about. Both men realize ... ‘This is about Mary’. The intruder wants to have the memory stick but this time !!! Sherlock refuses to give the secret away !!! Meanwhile DI Lestrade and the police have arrived and approach the house. The bust smasher decides that it’s better to leave without the memory stick. His message to Mary is: ‘Tell her she’s a dead woman. She’s a dead woman walking.’ Sherlock answers that Mary is his friend and under his protection. When he wants to know who he’s talking to, the bust smasher answers: ‘I’m the man who’s gonna kill your friend’ (The skull-the friend). Then he fires at a sensor, all lights go out and the bust smasher manages to leave the building.
At this point the true identity of the intruder is still in the dark. Only his face is now known and an involvement with Mary can be expected. What follows is the flashback to the hostage operation in Tiblisi, Georgia. Soon it gets clear that the intruder and Mary must have been agents of the same group. The flaschback shows how the man hides his memory stick, also marked A.G.R.A., in one of the plaster busts. Then he is caught, interrogated and tortured (like Jim in THOB). The bust smasher case continues ....
Sherlock meets with Mary and confronts her with this new A.G.R.A. memory stick and with pictures of the bust smasher. Mary recognizes the man immediately and indentifies him as Ajay. Only then she admits that the letter sequence A.G.R.A. aren’t her initials at all, as she’d claimed in HLV. Instead each letter stands for the surname of one of four agents - ALEX, GABRIEL, ROSAMUND and AJAY. Until six years ago - until Tiblisi - those four people were not only a very special group of secret agents, they also had a close relationship, calling each other ‘family’. Occasionally they were employed by Mycroft Holmes and the britisch government. This was also the case in the Tiblisi hostage incident that went spectacularly wrong. Mary believed to be the only surviver of that operation. Ajay on the other hand, who also managed to survive and escape, is convinced that Mary is the person who’d betrayed them, that she's responsible for his inprisonment and torture and for the death of Alex and Gabriel. That’s not true though. Not Mary but a voice on a phone and the code word AMMO/AMO triggered the fateful operation. Since then Ajay’s life is dedicated to revenge. He is convinced that Mary ows him something and wants to kill her. To protect her ‘new family’, Mary runs away and tries to go undercover ....
A phone, a heart whispers about explosive love ....
It isn’t difficult to see the similarities between Mary’s hiatus in TST and Sherlock’s in TRF. I wrote about that in On the roll of a dice. Ajay’s desire for revenge equals that of Jim in many ways - except one. While Jim’s attitude towards Sherlock is full of sexual innuendos right from the beginning (’Hello, sexy!’), nothing of that sort can be detected between Ajay and Rosamund Mary. It really seems that the prefix for Sherlock’s new experiment has changed. He ignores sex and instead adds LOVE as top priority to his equation.
SHERLOCK: Amo, amas, amat. MYCROFT: I love, you love, he loves.
Another pattern isn’t that easy to discover. Only lately I realized that the ‘plaster bust cases’ from TST mirror the ‘cold cases’ from TGG in surprising ways. By the end of Series One Jim Moriarty invites Sherlock Holmes to play the ‘great game’. He offers the ‘consulting detective’ a bunch of intriguing little cases - already closed by the police but with the wrong solution. Each one of those ‘cold cases’ is the work of Jim Moriarty himself in his capacity as ‘consulting criminal’. Five Greenwich pips are meant to announce five cases. As of yet, only four pips could be heard. Each case starts with a random victim who gets abducted and has to wear a bomb vest strapped to their chest.
Five cases, five victims, five bombs ... no, that’s wrong!
There are actually six bombs involved in that game. The very first one explodes right at the beginning, before the case has even started. It destroyes the house opposite Baker Street 221 and smashes the glass windows in the livingroom of 221b, hurling Sherlock to the floor with violent force. (The symbolism of exploding bombs)
There’s been a massive explosion in central London. As yet, there are no reports of any casualties, and the police are unable to say if there is any suspicion of terrorist involvement.
‘It’s hardly anything left of the place after the explosion’, tells DI Lestrade (very similar to the passions-grenade-explosion in 221b in TFP). But amidst the ruins of the house a strong-box is found with a dublicate of the pink phone from ASIP inside it. This phone provides the connection to Jim Moriarty and it delivers the Greenwich pip countdown for each of the five cases.
Jim (Ciao, Sherlock Holmes) places six bombs
Ajay (Good bye, Sherlock Holmes) sets out to smash six busts. He manages five. Sherlock himself destroys the sixth.
The five cold cases in TGG - respectively the five bust owner cases in TST - seem to point to a five act structure of the story told in Sherlock BBC. Four of those cases already mirror certain occurances among each other but they mirror also events happening in the four existing series of the show - and the five funny stories from TSOT can be added here as well.
(The five hostages Pills & Bombs, they come in fives Five funny stories Four stages - Four cases Five tasks of Sherrinford Under the microscope (5?????)
List of bust owners, cold cases, funny stories and Series
ONE - introduction, user manual, chapter list
TST - First bust owner ... the Welsborough case is the beginning. A car explodes. Charlie has a fit, dies and burns. Sherlock has the feeling that Jim might be responsible for the following bust smashing.
TGG - First cold case ... a massive explosion destroyes the house opposite 221 Baker Street and smashes the glass windows of the living room. The pink phone inside the strong box starts the Great Game and leads Sherlock back to his beginning- to Carl, had a fit, died and drowned. Sherlock has the feeling that something new is coming ... ‘Moriarty’.
The bomber’s first hostage is at a carpark where the transport stands still. (Transport - from standstill to movement)
TSOT - First funny story ... a ‘hollow’ client comes to Baker Street. Just clothes (just a facade) and they are placed on John’s chair.
Series One ... the beginning of the story - with introduction of the ‘players’ (ASIP), user manual (TBB) and chapter list (TGG). A memory stick with very secret ‘missile’ defence informations gets thrown into a swimming pool and Jim threatens to burn Sherlock’s heart out. (The meaning of Series One)
TWO - awakening, confrontation with sexuality, fear, evasion and flight
TST - Second bust owner ... Mohandes Hassan. His first name means ‘Servant of Mohana’ - the male and female representation of the greatest powers in the universe as well as one of the arrows (missiles) of the winged god of desire and sexual love. His last name refers to Ireland and a fawn (stag).
TGG - Second cold case ... Ian MONKford, banker and city boy, fakes his death and goes far away to the West, to Columbia, a country with high mountains and a history of drug production.
The bomber’s second hostage is placed at a traffic junction, under the very eyes of Anteros (winged god of requited love, equipped with bow and arrow) where the transport moves rapidly.
TSOT - Second funny story ... on a roof a poison giant of short stature blows little arrowheads at Sherlock and John - like the gods of dersire and sex - Amor, Cupid, Kamadeva - are expected to do.
Series Two ... Sherlock has to deal with Irene Adler and Jim Moriarty, Mrs and Mr Sex. Mr Archer is told to shoot Dr Watson. At a theatre Sherlock dons the deerstalker. He is confronted with and afraid of the HOUND. When Mr Sex takes hold of the royal insignias (crown jewels), controlls power (money), releases dangerous criminals (emotions), threatens his ‘family’ and manages to bring discredit on the famous detecive, Sherlock confronts Jim and talks him into suicide. Then he fakes his own death (flight down from the roof) and goes far away to the East, to the Himalayas and - according to Anderson - unmasks there a blond drug smuggler disguised as MONK.
THREE - return, investigation, realisation, fear, evasion and flight
TST - Third bust owner ... Dr Barnicot. There’s blood (information) on the doctor’s bust. The ‘family’ Sherlock, John, Mary, the baby and a dog try in vain to track it back to the bust smasher. But Sherlock is convinced that Jim must be involved somehow.
TGG - Third cold case ... The Prince’s case is about the unhappy ‘family’ Connie, Kenny, Raoul and Sekhmet, the cat that didn’t do it. (They come in pairs). Connie (controller) wasn’t murdered by CAT but by Raoul’s chemistry (sex). Kenny (Sherlock) loses sex to prison and is left with CAT (pet love ... ‘but then people do get so sentimental about their pets’ Jim, TGG)
The bomber’s third hostage is a blind, old lady (love) who dies when the bomb explodes. (Love actually)
TSOT - Third funny story ... Sherlock opens a little box and discovers the inexplicable light inside (love).
Series Three ... Sherlock investigates Mary Morstan/Watson. There are two secrets about her. Sherlock reveals her pregnancy and later a dark secret regarding her past. When that secret (the facade) explodes, it backfires at Sherlock (not with the CAT-gun though). Sometimes ‘families fall out’. The secret information isn’t pursued further. It’s source gets destroyed and Sherlock doesn’t learn the entire truth about Mary’s history. His flight into exile is cancled because suddenly Jim Moriarty (out of straitjacket and padded cell) is back on every TV screen of the country (every transmitter of the body). Sherlock has to react and decides to go deeper.
INTERLUDE - reflections on sex and emotions, reaching the changing point
FOUR - return, restart with new prefix, confrontation with love and landing
TST - Fourth bust owner ... Miss Orrie Harker. She owns two busts - manifactured in the East (past) - and BOTH GET SMASHED. The lady with the name of a Viking, lies dead in the garden, all dressed in blue. Sherlock assumes he has solved the case and starts off to the last bust owner’s house - Jack Sandeford - to catch the culprit and reveal the Black Pearl.
TGG - Fourth cold case ... Security guard Woodbridge and professor Cairns (stargazer&conductor of the universe), BOTH GET KILLED by the Golem because both know about the fake Vermeer painting with the supernova explosion - a case with a distinctly ‘bohemian’ feeling (Conductor of the universe). Sherlock doesn’t use his laptop but instead the pink phone to communicate the solution, successfully, while a countdown is running backwards. Then he is ready to deal with the first and last case of the game, which are the same ... Mycroft’s missing ‘missile’ plans.
The bomber’s fourth hostage is an unseen kid who cries for help from an unseen location.
TSOT - Fourth funny story ... an oscillating client on the pavement - oscilliation always hints at a love affair - says Sherlock.
Series Four ... Sherlock’s road becomes a river with only one destination and blue the dominant colour of the story. Mary gives birth to a girl. The occurences told in this series are constantly ‘oscillating’ back and forth and mirrow events throughout the whole show, which have already happened but in a different setting. TWO CHARACTERS GET SHOT - two facades crumble - the ’wife’ and the ‘eternal friend’. Sherlock becomes the detective ‘lying down’ (like pink Jennifer, like blue Orrie) and 221b explodes. It is what it is (and what it is, is love). A girl cries for help from high above the clouds. A boy cries for help from a well deep down below. And Sherlock starts a countdown before he solves the secret-sister-case. Then he and John run off to new adventures. The whole story feels very much unsolve.
FIVE - speculation: final battle, acceptance and reunion of the divided ‘family’ - love, sex, intellect with the main character
TST - Fifth bust owner ... Jack (Johnny) Sandeford. He has a daughter and owns a pool. Sherlock himself smashes Jack’s plaster bust near that pool and reveals - not the Black Pearl as he expected - but a second AGRA MEMORY STICK. Sherlock keeps the memory stick, this time he doesn’t give the information away. Despite the unmistakably loud fighting noises, the police sirens, the loudhailer and the shooting, neither Jack (Johnny) Sandeford nor his daughter seem to notice anything about the occurances of that night. Father and daughter are not involved in the confrontation beside the swimming pool. (Maybe ‘real’ John and his ‘love’ aren’t involved in Sherlock’s 'great war’ at all?)
TGG - Fifth cold case ... the lost missile plans on a memory stick. The fifth case closes the circle backwards to the first. A massive explosion smashes the glass windows of the living room at 221b Baker Street and destroyes the house opposite. The pink phone inside the strong box starts the Great Game (the great war) and leads Sherlock back to his beginning. Mycroft orders his brother to investigate the murder of Mr West to retrieve the lost missile plans. When Sherlock shows no interest in the matter, Mycroft refers the case to Dr Watson. It turns out that the tracks changed direction and Mr West’s dead body fell from the ‘transport’ near the disused Battersea Power Station. His murderer is 'family’, drug dealer (chemistry provider) and biker. Sherlock doesn’t return the missile memory stick to ‘the government’ but offers it Jim as getting-to-know-you present. The consulting criminal throws the MEMORY STICK into the swimming pool because he isn’t interested in it anymore. He has what he wanted to have. (And what could happen in a different version? In one in which Mr Sex doesn’t leave the building? Sherlock between Sex and Love, next to a massive bomb ready to explode and a pool full of emotions? ‘You, ripping my clothes off in a darkened swimming pool’ .... then people will definitely talk ... :)
The bomber’s fifth hostage is Dr John H. Watson - ‘Johnny-boy’ as Jim calls him - placed right next to the swimming pool in which once little Carl died. But has the ‘fixed point’ changed by now? Has Dr Watson finally become John?
TSOT - Fifth funny story ... the elephant in the room ...
Series Five ... ???
Looking at those connections, what can be expected of a Fifth Series - if ever there is one? The conditions for a full blown stage drama of the finest quality are clearly given, I think. In any case, the memory stick, the lost and retrieved data, the secret information seems to be the key stone of the story - the last and most important puzzle piece.
Bombs, plaster busts, memory sticks and AGRA
Those are the connecting elements, as it seems. Most of all - the memory stick - lost, changed/burned and found again - thrown into a swimming pool, into a fireplace, revealed next to a swimming pool.
"That’s what it’s all been for”, says Sherlock in TGG beside a swimming pool, raising a memory stick in his hand high up in the air.
“This is about Mary”, says Sherlock in TST near a swimming pool, staring down at a memory stick on the floor.
Does this mean that Mary will return to the story? I don’t know. The thing is ... when Sherlock thinks the memory stick and the case is about Mary, he doesn’t know yet the whole truth about A.G.R.A. He still thinks that A.G.R.A. are Mary’s initials. But that’s not what A.G.R.A. is. Mary isn’t A.G.R.A. after all. She’s just ONE part of A.G.R.A. which originally consisted of four agents:
Alex, Gabriel, Rosamund and Ajay
Rosamund and Ajay die ‘on stage’ in TST. Alex and Gabriel haven’t survived the hostage incident in Tiblise six years ago. At least that’s what is said. Both characters died ‘off stage’, so who knows. Ajay was believed to be dead as well and yet, he survived. Maybe Alex and Gabriel (respectively what or whom they represent) will return from the East as well and appear ‘on stage’ in a next chapter, just like Mary and Ajay did.
About the meaning of names (because this is always interesting):
ALEX (Alexander) is of Greek origin and means ‘defending man’. In Greek mythology it is another name of the hero Paris. He gave the ‘golden apple’ to Aphrodite, who promisid him the love of Helen, the most beautiful woman on Earth. But the lady was already married to someone else, and thus Alex/Paris caused the ‘great war’ (x). ((Sounds like a description of John))
GABRIEL is of Hebrew origin and means ‘god is my strong man’ (derived from strong man/hero & god). Gabriel is regarded as an archangel in Judaism (Guardian Angel), Islam (Angel of Revelation), Christianity (Angel of Announcement). The archangel announced the pregnancy of MARY and ELIZABETH - the birth of Jesus and John. Gabriel blowing the trumpet is often related to the resurrection of the dead (x). ((Sherlock announces the pregnancy of Mary Elizabeth Watson and Jim thinks he’s on the side of the angels))
ROSAMUND is originally derived from the Germanic elements hros 'horse’ and mund ‘protection’, later influenced by the Latin phrase rosa munda ‘pure rose’. The phrase ‘sub rosa’ (under the rose) is associated with secrecy. ((Fits perfectly for Mary’s role as guardian and facade)). Little Rosie’s name is associated with Rosa Mundi, the Rose of the World. A real rose of that name is Rosa gallica versicolor - the rose of many/of changing colours. ((versicolor=iridescent=rainbowlike))
AJAY is of Indian origin, derived from Sanskrit and means ‘unconquered’. ((However hard the attempt to eliminate Jim is, he always comes back to continue the game - quite unconquerable, that man))
Turns out that each one of the A.G.R.A. agents is a defender, a guardian, a strong man, a hero, an archangel, a protector, unconquered, brings revelation, even resurrects the dead. What a dramatic selection of names! That’s a rather ‘indestructible’ family indeed. But then, Sherlock says of himself: ‘I am known to be indestructible’. :) ( A.G.R.A. - Under the sign of four)
Empty Houses .....
The very first of Jim’s bombs destroyes the house opposite Baker Street 221 and leaves behind a very strong box that contains a dublicate of the pink lady’s pink phone. It’s Jim Moriarty’s choice of connecting device to communicate with Sherlock and to deliver the countdown pips for the cold cases. The Great Game has begun. Isn’t it interesting that the creators of Sherlock BBC describe Sherlock’s sexual impulses not only as ‘that’s where the story is’ but also as something he decides to keep locked up inside an iron box?
Sherlock Holmes, again, must have sexual impulses because human beings tend to -- most human beings, not absolutely all, but that's the majority. The fact is, he decides to put all that in an iron box to make his brain work better. Of course, the fact that that iron box bounces around and shakes and bangs from the inside is what makes the story interesting. He wants to rise above us like a snowcapped mountain, but he's actually a volcano, and that's where the story is. (IGN Interview, February 2014)
That house opposite 221b is actually the ‘empty house’ from canon. Camden House it is called and chosen by Colonel Sebastian Moran for the assassination of Sherlock Holmes. Holmes sets his trap, to catch the last remaining member of Professor Moriarty’s criminal network, the most dangerous man in London, at that same place and takes Watson with him. Meanwhile Mrs Hudson secretly moves a bust, made of wax, near the window of the livingroom in 221b. That bust has been artfully shaped after Holmes’ likeness, to fool his killer.
I had the strongest possible reason for wishing certain people to think that I was there when I was really elsewhere. ACD, The Empty House
Pic from Granada Series, Sherlock Holmes, The Empty House
A ‘dublicate man’ indeed - like the one from the spinning-the-plates cases in TST. Sherlock says about that case: ‘it’s never twins’. Another interesting quote from that canon story is “Journeys end in lovers meeting” - the famous line from Shakespeare’s play ‘Twelfth Night’. The creators of Sherlock BBC used that quote in their Dracula adaptation and included it into the final meeting - the last battle - between Zoe Van Helsing and Count Dracula (Into battle).
(The Empty Houses John’s wedding is the Eleventh Night by @lukessense S4 is set duringTwelvetide by @sagestreet)
The house opposite Baker Street 221b plays also an important role in the Unaired Pilot. ‘Good old Dr Watson’ chooses exactly this house to shoot serial killer Hope. A very odd decision of the story tellers, in my opinion. Dr Watson has only been twice in Baker Street and on both occasions just for a very short period of time. How could he have known that the flat, the house, opposite 221b is uninhabitated, that he can enter it unnoticed and take his shot at the cabbie? Why doesn’t he go right away into 221b to stop the serial killer, who actually is unarmed in that version? (Some musings about the strange parts of the Unaired Pilot)
The ‘official’ Empty House in Sherlock BBC appears eight episodes later, in HLV, and (like the college in ASIP) it’s a twin house. According to Anderson, the Empty Houses at Leinster Gardens are Sherlock’s bolt hole number one. The houses are Sherlock’s property but actually just a facade - created to make way for the steam trains behind. Mary’s face is projected onto them, suggesting that she is Sherlock’s facade number one (Mirror hiding in plain sight).
Five to six
As mentioned at the beginning, I stumbled accross this interesting pattern of ‘five to six’ while writing on ‘Who’s a fan of Maggie T?’. The theme of 'six busts owned by five people’ is taken straight away from the canon story The Six Napoleons. But the bust case isn’t the only one in Sherlock BBC where a ‘series of five’ becomes a ‘batch of six’:
Regarding the Thatcher books in THOB, Sherlock lists them as follows: ‘Copy of “The Downing Street Years”; one, two, three, four, five separate biographies of Thatcher.’ That makes one ‘memoir’ and five ‘biographies’, a total of six.
There are five dead men in TAB, murdered in their own homes by ‘The League of Furies’ in the attempt to revenge their ‘sister’. Rice on the floor, like at a wedding and the word YOU written in blood on a wall. And then there is a sixth - Mr Carmichael.
Sherlock lists five funny stories at John’s wedding and then entertains the guest with a sixth case - The Bloody Guardsman, which finds its solution in its ‘twin case’ - The Mayfly Man.
Five of Sherlock’s ‘rats’ in TEH behave perfectly normal. Not so the sixth - the big one, rat number one, Lord Moran, the ‘Sumatra-Rat’.
Something intersting can be read in a newspaper - on page five, column six, first sentence - a tabloid nickname - Bachelor John Watson.
Five Greenwich pips are meant to announce the bombs for the ‘cold cases’ in TGG although there are six bombs in the game - five for five people and one for the (canon) empty house (facade in HLV) opposite 221 Baker Street in PILOT/TGG.
While in ASIP Sherlock becomes the fifth victim of serial killer Jeff Hope, the Unaired PILOT starts out with five murdered people and Sherlock becomes victim number six.
Short and condensed ‘circle’ summary
TGG - there are five pips for six bombs, of which the last one is linked to a memory stick and a swimming pool. Jim (James) Moriarty is the driving force behind it. A memory stick gets thrown into a swimming pool.
Two bombs actually explode. Victims are the house opposite 221b - the empty house from canon which turns out to be ‘facade’ Mary in TSOT - and the blind old lady from the Prince’s case (love).
In PILOT 'good old Dr Watson, the fixed point in a changing age’ uses the ‘empty house’ opposite 221 Baker Street to shoot Hope. In ASIP the location for the shot changes into a ‘twin’ further education school.
-
TST - there are five characters who own six busts, of which the last one is linked to a memory stick and a swimming pool. The last owner’s first name is Jack (alias Johnny). A memory stick is revealed next to a swimming pool.
The one character, who owns two busts dies in a GARDEN, dressed in blue, while the smashing of her twin busts is framed on both ends by transitions to a married couple ... John Hamish=James and Mary Elizabeth.
In PILOT/ASIP Jennifer Wilson (pink case/pink phone) dies in an ‘empty’ house at Lauriston GARDENs, while in HLV Mary’s face is projected on Sherlock’s ‘twin’ empty houses at Leinster GARDENs. (Fateful gardens - empty houses)
Thanks for reading that far and thanks @callie-ariane for the scripts.

MUN QUESTIONS.
Q1 : if you could write your character your way in their own movie , what would it be called , what style would it be filmed in , and what would it be about ? A1 : Recently I decided that if/when I try to write anything serious about Eve again, it’ll center on her being a jewel thief because it presents me more fun, and emotionally diverse, opportunities. That and I have a very specific cover image in my mind. Ideally, her adventures would be a series of books. I have no title in mind, no idea about how ‘it would be filmed’ ( although a style replicating 90s films would be excellent, film grain and all. ) but, I do have a bunch of plots in mind that I really don’t feel like typing out here.
Q2 : what would their soundtrack / score sound like ? A2 : Her score would have a vintage sound (or a jazzy Spike Lee sound, if you will) with instrumentals by Dorothy Ashby (a Jazz Harpist) the Ahmad Jamal Trio, Pharaoh Sanders, Yusef Lateef and Tarika Blue. For music with lyrics, the soundtrack would include the likes of Julie London, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dionne Warwick.
Q3 : why did you start writing this character ? + Q4 : what first attracted you to this character ? A3 : Whenever I make NPCs for my character’s lives I actually can’t just let them just be NPCs. I start thinking about them too much. Developing them too much. And then I’m like, ‘wow! I really like this character!’ Eve was a different character when I began writing her, and likely wouldn’t be considered the same character as she was previously, if I told someone in real life who knows about my writing (like my grandma) about all the changes she has undergone. Originally Delores was a university professor, because I thought it could lead to interesting interactions with college-age muses. And her previous history with the mafia was also something interesting to tap in. But then I started thinking about what was realistic, what wasn’t realistic, what did I feel comfortable/interested writing? What didn’t I feel comfortable/interested in writing? So as time went on, things would alter about this character. And the new things I came up with attracted me more.
Q5 : describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse. A5 : I have a love/hate relationship with Eve’s quiet demeanor. On one hand, I think quieter characters need love and the ability to be fully dimensional but on the other hand, writing louder characters has always been more fun for me. But really, Eve’s guarded behavior makes writing her stressful in some cases with others because sometimes...if I’m going to be honest...people don’t know how to carry a thread and interact with someone of her demeanor effectively.
Q6 : what do you have in common with your muse ? A6 : We’re both black, we’re both into art (although our exact interests and aesthetics with art differ)
Q7 : how does your muse feel about you ? A7 : Realistically she would think I need to take better care of myself.
Q8 : what characters does your muse have interesting interactions with ? A8 : We skippin’ this question.
Q9 : what gives you inspiration to write your muse ? A9 : Films such as, “Waiting to Exhale,” “The Kitchen” and “Widows.” Books by Alice Walker, like “The Third Life of Grange Copeland” as well as her short story, “Roselily.” The historical mob figure Stephanie St. Clair.
Q10 : how long did this take you to complete ? A10 : A few hours.

TELL ME ABOUT UR DEMON OC TJEY SEEM SO COOL AND I WANNA KNOW MORE ABOUT THEM!!!
assuming yu might be talking about him [hes the recent one i posted]
his first name is still undecided, but his surname is mccullough Mac Cú Uladh, (hound of ulster); the name is irish gaelic, primarily found in ulster and the provinces history spread throughout family surnames.
his birthplace will most likely be in ulster and he's in his late 30's, and the story will take place in 2005, by this, he grew up during the troubles.
he's an albino/white demon [6'3], having very pale skin (completely white) and black/grey features. his hair is naturally grey, including the rings around his eyes as black and same for his horns. his claws are white. very the same for the rest of his species.
he has a fairly large family (all same species) 1st relative wise, and has a younger nephew who has a career in producing.
he'll be a protagonist of one of my original works, a hitman, and before he travels to the US to persue his dream of becoming a successful boxer [where he later becomes a hitman], he picks up his friend (goblin/elf) from prison after his release and thats where the scrap of the story begins. i plan for the story to take part in both a US city or two, and ireland.
he's intended to be tough-headed, judgemental, hold long grudges, have issues with trust, have either slow/fast reactions depending on situation and upfront. but has a natural comedical side to him, and is very passionate for what he cares about and loves deep down. can act dumb sometimes and if he wants alone time he'll make it clear by using physical force.
#i have big plans for him#can act a bit drool sometimes like he'll sneeze loudly in front of an important meeting or make goofy faces#hes one of my favourite characters esp design wise that ive made#im very proud of the way it turned out#i was just doodlin back in 2019 didnt feel very confident with my art much back then and what came out was him#his design hasnt changed much since#gargo_art#my ocs#ty for the ask man this one really meant a lot to me#if yu wanna hear more about my ocs feel free to ask anytime

David Willows MK 2
A/N: Just an updated version of David’s profile, complete with a few changes and a more in-depth description of certain characteristics. Hope you guys enjoy and if you’d like your MC to be friends with him, message me and let’s chat about it.
Some more things to note:
-Merula is not the mole.
-I’m using the female version of Rowan as David’s best friend because to hell with game restrictions. Also, she survives, at least... David’s Rowan does.
-Drastic alteration to the Quidditch storyline. Skye is in David’s year and a Gryffindor. Orion, Murphy and Erika are two years above David and are in Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin respectively. Also including Andre and Charlie while introducing Oliver Wood and Lee Jordan.
-It goes without saying but spoilers for my ideas. Some are kept deliberately vague and some aren’t covered entirely more so because I intend to write about it someday. Let me know what you guys think of those that are given though.
-------------
General Information
Name: David Owen Willows (Formerly David Owen Hall, changed to mother’s maiden name in 1982).
Gender: Male
Age: 11-18 (1984-91), 19-25 (1992-98)
DOB: 30/03/1973
Species: Human
Blood status: Half-blood
Sexuality: Straight
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Ethnicity: White-British
Nationality: English (maternal side of family is Irish, paternal grandmother is Scottish, paternal grandfather and father are English).
Residence: Liverpool/ Lancaster (during his Hogwarts years and depending upon who he’s staying with).
Wimborne (during his career as a pro Quidditch player)
Hogsmeade (final place of residence after becoming Charms professor)
Myers Briggs Personality Type: ENFP, The Campaigner
Character summary: Though he may come across as stand-offish at first, David Willows is a friend as loyal as he is bull-headed. A student of Erika Rath, he became known as Hound on the Quidditch pitch for his relentless pursuit of opposing players. A skill in duelling and the muggle martial art of muay thai (also a pair of knuckledusters) ensures David is a formidable opponent with or without magic.
Personality:
Aggressive: While he tries to reign in his anger, David is known to have a short temper when it comes to certain taunts. Chief amongst them, comparing him to Jacob. In his early years he was even willing to physically fight much older students despite the clear difference in both size and strength.
Aloof: For all of his first year and a good portion of his second year, David isn’t the one to initiate a friendship (except for Chiara but that was when there was no one else to really talk to while spending a night in the Hospital Wing due to the Devil’s Snare incident). However, while undergoing his first time as a quidditch player, he’s taught by Penny how to be a bit more social at pre and post-match parties.
Artistic: David was taught by his mother Rue to draw in greyscale sketches, something he improves on during his time throughout Hogwarts. In the midst of Jacob’s disappearance, his parent’s divorce and especially the stress that comes at Hogwarts, drawing provided an escape for him. His favourite things to draw are people and creatures.
Competitive: This aspect of David tends to come out the most when it comes to sport. With Erika as his mentor, he nurtures a healthy sense of competition as well as a determination to best the other houses and put Hufflepuff on top when it comes to quidditch.
Courageous: Largely as a result of his loyalty, David is willing to throw himself headlong into danger. The Sorting Hat didn’t nearly put him in Gryffindor for no reason.
Determined: When David sets his mind to a goal, he wants to accomplish it to the best of his abilities. In the case of finding Jacob however, it led to a sort of tunnel-vision, one that was finally broken when Chauncy and Philip succumb to injuries sustained under the sleepwalking curse.
Empathetic: Throughout his years at Hogwarts, David starts to empathise with people in his life. Even in the case of Merula, he sees how lonely she must really be and tries to reach out to her on numerous occasions. If he doesn’t fully understand it, he’d like you to share your feelings with him, at your own behest of course.
Loyal: In spite of a prickly exterior at first, once you win David’s loyalty, he’ll return it ten-fold. The type of friend who would take a bullet for you.
Snarky: David has a sharp tongue, preferably he tries to shut down an argument with his wits. Only going for duelling when he feels it necessary. That being said, he isn’t shy about getting petty in a verbal spar, for example his response to Merula when first being taunted about Jacob supposedly teaming up with Voldemort: “At least that’s just a rumour, can’t say the same about your parents.”
Stubborn: A self-described ‘stubborn git’, David is quite notorious for not budging from his position once he thinks he has all the facts he needs. If he’s being especially difficult, just get Merula.
Appearance
Face Claim: Dave Franco (as an adult at least).
Voice Claim: Paul McCartney.
Game appearance:
Physique: Athletic, broad shouldered and fairly bulky as a result of weight training with Erika.
Hair Colour: Dark Brown
Hair style: Chin-length (1st-2nd year), crew cut (3rd-4th year), short but long enough to slick back (5th year-present).
Eye colour: Dark brown.
Height: 5′11″ (as of 6th year)
Weight: Approx 80kg (when fully grown)
Scarring: A few small ones sustained during duels and the occasional mishap in quidditch, mostly on his upper body with a few on his legs. Sustains a burn scar on the left side of his waist during the battle with R.
Body modifications: Get’s the phrase “You’ll never walk alone.” tattooed on his right bicep at eighteen. Later gets a ram skull tattoo on his upper back just between the shoulder blades at age twenty. Finally, gets a shepherd crook just below the ram skull tattoo at age twenty-one.
Inventory: His wand, a pair of knuckledusters, a sketchbook, a pencil case containing stationary.
Fashion: He trusts Andre’s advice on what looks good on him though knows what works for him and what doesn’t. Partly influenced by his musical tastes (mainly punk, and rock and roll), has a love of leather jackets and slightly ripped jeans.
Background/ History:
Pre-Hogwarts:
-David was born in Liverpool, living in the suburb of Allerton. One of his favourite things to do was play football with Jacob and his dad.
-His mum would teach him to draw, most often on rainy days.
-Close to both of his parents as a result but it all changed when Jacob disappeared. He knew Jacob and his parents had arguments after being expelled but hadn’t heard any of it on account of the use of a muffling charm. Furthermore, Rue and Matthew were driven apart, Matthew blaming Jacob’s change in attitude and eventual disappearance on magic in its entirety.
-Sometime after Jacob disappeared and when the general shitshow stirred up by the Daily Prophet had died down, it was settled that Rue and Matthew would divorce. Given that David would go to Hogwarts as well, they thought it would be best for David to take Willows as his surname, hopefully not being recognised as Jacob Hall’s brother.
-This was fruitless, Rita Skeeter caught wind of the proceedings and sensationalised them, exposing the name change in the process. The stress and grief caused both parents to distance themselves from David in some way. Rue threw herself into work and became even more strict with David’s freedom while Matthew just left.
-David however, was fighting his own battles, it became known at his muggle school about Jacob going missing as well as his parents divorcing. This caused him to become quite reclusive from his classmates and would lash out at anyone who said a bad word towards him, especially if it concerned his family drama. He lost any friends he did have and refused to make any more.
During Hogwarts
-Year 1: He first meets Rowan, even being introduced to her younger brother, Alder (basically male Rowan).
David, Rowan, Tonks, Diego, Chiara and Penny first begin to form what becomes known as the Hufflesquad.
Also befriends Ben and Charlie.
Angelica Cole takes him under her wing despite not being in the same house and even shows David a group of trolls she’s been tending to in preparation for her apprenticeship in training security trolls.
Meets the Booths during the Christmas break and despite a rocky start, begins to develop a positive relationship with them even coming to an understanding with his dad.
During one of his expeditions with Angelica, he’s confronted by Needle, an acromantula that previously belonged to Jacob.
Finally stands up to his mum properly, resulting in him staying with the Booths for the summer in Lancaster.
-Year 2: David meets those who are involved in the Quidditch scene at Hogwarts, including Erika Rath, who he briefly develops a crush on until he’s let down gently at the end of Year 2.
He duels Merula for a second time, winning once more, which makes her cry albeit in private. This then results in having his first encounter with Barnaby Lee, who confronts David about upsetting Merula. David tries to get past but Barnaby wraps his hands around David’s throat. Not actually choking him mind, more to get his attention. David panics as it reminds him of the Devil’s Snare that wrapped around his throat and lashes out at Barnaby.
David puts Barnaby in the hospital wing, much to the anger of Liz Tuttle.
The last Quidditch match for the House Cup between Hufflepuff and Slytherin is interrupted by the spread of the cursed ice. Ultimately resulting in Gryffindor’s victory in the cup for that year.
Rue comes back, mentioning how Corey Hayden (David’s American cousin in this AU) would like to transfer to Hogwarts.
Year 3: Amelia comes to Hogwarts as a first year and gets sorted into Hufflepuff. Similarly, Alder starts at Hogwarts and is sorted into Ravenclaw.
Amelia brings Dusty, her cat, along with her. However, Dusty goes missing shortly after arriving at the castle.
Later, in a COMC class, Barnaby mentions that he found a cat matching Dusty’s description. Initially, David is very suspicious to the extent of threatening Barnaby if he harmed Dusty in any way. Barnaby refutes this and returns Dusty to him unharmed, causing David to apologise for both for the accusation and the events that happened last year. Eventually, he even befriends Barnaby.
In a similar vein, when tending to some of his creatures on the reserve, he bumps into Liz and winds up introducing her to Needle. The two get a friendship going, David admiring Liz’s passion for creatures and Liz appreciating David for not finding her weird when she rambles about animals. To the extent that they go out on a few dates.
Close to the end of the year, he rants at Merula. Effectively asking the question of why she seems to hate him. Yet despite the rant he closes off with how he understands Merula, he’s been that lonely kid lashing out at the world and it’s not fun. Despite her reluctance to admit it, Merula knows David is right.
He gets the chance to verbally unload on Rita Skeeter for the articles she wrote about his family when she comes to the school looking to interview an interesting student. Later, several of his friends plus Merula of all people step in to put Skeeter in her place when she successfully provokes him into a fit of rage to make him look bad. The situation is eventually diffused by McGonagall.
Year 4:
Corey officially transfers to Hogwarts from Ilvermorny after exchanging letters with David throughout third year.
Though David wasn’t particularly close to them, Chauncy and Philip (two of his dormmates alongside Diego) succumb to injuries sustained when they were attacked by a red cap under the Sleepwalking curse. When he learns the truth of what attacked them, David slays the creature.
David starts to realise he has a crush on Merula after assisting her in casting Expecto Patronum. Later in the year, he takes her out on a date to Hogsmeade, gets her a songbook for Christmas and even takes her out to the Celestial Ball.
Merula’s parents are freed from Azkaban by R, her mother even meeting Merula in secret throughout the year. During one of their meet-ups, she has a hunch Merula is starting to develop a crush on David (something which is true but not something she would admit it at the time).
In order to eliminate this apparent threat to her family’s blood purity, she asks Merula to bring him to her in the Forbidden Forest under the guise of allowing the two of them to join R like she has. Instead, she subdues David with Petrificus Totalus, attempting to convince Merula to leave him, that David isn’t worth it.
Merula sides with David even though it pains her initially. David stays with her over the summer, where they try to figure out... whatever the hell their relationship is at the moment.
Year 5: Throughout this year he dates Merula in secret until Valentine’s Day. It’s here that she confesses she’s ready to have their relationship out in the open.
One of the most major event for David is Rakepick’s betrayal, he had actually grown fond of her as a mentor. Being stabbed in the back wasn’t a good thing for him.
The second is Jacob leaving immediately after David finds him. It’s hurtful and David becomes a bit reclusive for a while. Finally, he’s comforted by Bill, Orion and Erika, the older sibling figures in his life.
Year 6: Jacob returns, under the watchful eye of Alastor Moody, acting as the DADA teacher for that year. Naturally, there’s tension between the brothers, which eventually resolves.
Jacob does join David for the Christmas break, where he gets along well with the Booths and reunites with his parents.
As well as this, R attempts to come after Amelia, resulting in the death of Alder Khanna. As well as being a devastating loss, it causes a rough patch in David and Rowan’s relationship when in her grief she winds up shouting “I wish I’d never met you, David Willows!” She only realises what she just said when the words leave her mouth but regardless, it causes a fracture within David’s larger circle of friends.
Eventually, the time comes for when David, Jacob and their allies take on the vaults like they had always dreamed of. Together, they face off against the guardian of the Sunken vault, an Ammit (based on the creature of Ancient Egyptian Mythology). Eventually the beast is defeated and they claim the treasure of the vaults, what seems to be the base of a necklace.
In a celebration at the Three Broomsticks, R attacks and murders Jacob. This sends David spiralling into grief, hitting his truly lowest point. He worked so hard, he rebuilt his family at home and forged a new one at Hogwarts, all the while hoping Jacob would be able to join them. And what was it all for? Nothing.
Before the school year is up... he snaps his wand and runs away from Hogwarts. Not to Liverpool, not to Lancaster, just anywhere but there. It will keep his friends and family safe or so he reasons. Deep down though, he thinks it’s cowardly.
During this time, he finds his way to Glasgow and starts sleeping rough on the streets all the while battling with grief, anger and self loathing. This goes on for two months before Moody tracks him down, apparating him to a secluded area of the Scottish countryside, kicks his arse and talks him down. Taking him to Grimmauld Place afterwards with the intention of formulating a plan to take the fight to R.
Where he finds most of his remaining friends waiting for him. At first he staunchly refuses their help, feeling he’s already put enough people in danger. Yet they refuse to leave.
This is actually the moment where the Circle of Khanna is formed, this time named for Alder. Reconciling with Rowan after a serious heart-to-heart.
Year 7: ...Let’s just say R is going to regret setting David Willows on the warpath.
R’s destruction becomes widely regarded news, however David allows Moody to take the credit for it. Frankly, by this point he’s sick of any attachment to the Cabal and just wants to play Quidditch.
He’s able to pass his NEWTS and win the Quidditch cup for Hufflepuff one last time, resulting in him being offered the position as beater on the Wimborne Wasps.
Post-Hogwarts:
David and Merula work things out, moving in together. Though it’s odd with David still keeping at his Quidditch training and Merula now working for Gringotts as a curse-breaker. After winning the British and Irish League for the Wasps in 1993, he proposes to Merula which she accepts.
In 1994, they have a wedding in the summer time with Rowan being David’s best woman. They did plan on having kids until Cedric’s murder at the hands of Voldemort. With Quidditch cancelled and Merula being affiliated to Gringotts, both are approached to work for the Order.
Though initially very hesitant, David agrees. Eliminating Death Eaters, rescuing their hostages and even fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts.
He returns to the Quidditch scene when it starts up again in 1999, helping the Wasps win the cup three more times. 1999 is also the year in which Merula and David have their first kid, Robin. After the latest victory in 2002 he discovers Merula is pregnant again, and his retirement from Quidditch is looming on the horizon. He’s convinced by Judith Harris (@judediangelo75) to teach for a few weeks over the summer at KC’s (@kc-needs-coffee) quidditch summer camp. It’s here that he develops a love for teaching. Getting in touch with professor Flitwick to work as his assistant before becoming the Charms professor.
In early 2003, he welcomes his son Nicholas into the world.
Family
Matthew Hall (father):
Face Claim: Ben Miller
A stern but fair man and CIMA-qualified accountant originally from Yorkshire, Matthew met David’s biological mother Rue when he was on a business trip to Dublin in 1956. Encountering her in a quiet pub being told “I’ve dealt with a real dragon today” when he asked if she was okay on account of how tired she looked. Matthew took it as a joke but Rue was being entirely serious. They struck up a friendship and began dating, eventually getting married in 1961 and having Jacob in 1964.
initially, he was fascinated by the existence of the wizarding world but soon came to fear it after Jacob’s disappearance. Divorcing Rue afterwards and cutting off contact from David aside from agreeing to send child maintenance. However, after being chewed out by his girlfriend Lyra, he all but begs David to come visit him in Lancaster over Christmas in 1984.
The reason being that Amelia’s magical abilities finally began to manifest, which became a cause of conflict between David and Matthew, largely from David thinking that was the only reason he was invited. Eventually, they come to an understanding and try to work on improving their relationship.
Rue Willows (mother):
Face Claim: Fiona O’Carroll
A dragonologist from Dublin in the employ of the Dragon Research and Restraint Bureau. Though she was strict, she was generally attentive towards David, being the one who taught him to draw.
After Jacob’s disappearance however, she became very withdrawn and austere. It was her way of opting for a ‘tough love’ approach, thinking she had been too soft and in her misguidance tried to control David’s life. Even then, she still grieved, frequently getting into arguments with David about his behaviour at school, bringing up Jacob when David tried to make her proud of him and other such things.
During the start of the summer break between first and second year, David finally stands up to her properly. The words that get through to her are the following, “That stranger’s name is Lyra and she’s been a better mum to me in the weeks I’ve known her than you have for me in years.” and “I love you too mum... but I don’t know if I like you anymore.”
She does a lot of soul searching after that, staying with relatives in America for a year before coming back and promising to do better with her and David’s relationship.
Lyra Booth (nee Robinson) (step-mother):
Face Claim: Ruth Wilson
A muggle and CIMA-qualified accountant originally from London, left widowed in 1980 after her first husband, Peter died in a car accident. She met Matthew when working at an accounting firm in Lancaster shortly after his divorce from Rue. After a couple months of knowing each other, the two began dating, Lyra introduced him to her children, who he hit it off well with.
She knew he had a son who he sent child maintenance to but it wasn’t revealed until Amelia accidentally made a plant pot explode in a fit of frustration that Lyra learned the truth. Consequently... she blew up at Matthew for as good as abandoning as his son. Insisting on inviting him around for Christmas.
While David was prickly when he first came around, he eventually warmed up to her and the rest of the Booths, being a positive maternal influence on him.
Jacob Hall (brother) (deceased):
Face Claim: Tom Holland
David’s only biological sibling, a gifted though trouble-making student, first became interested in the cursed vaults during his first year when he was informed about the legend by seventh year Patricia Rakepick. In his sixth year, he stood up for fellow Gryffindor Angelica Cole when she was being bullied (at the time she was a first year).
His investigation into the vaults would put him into conflict with the mysterious cult known as R. A conflict that would put his family in danger and even cost him his life.
Alex Booth (step-brother):
Face Claim: Jody Latham
The eldest of the Booth siblings, Alex is a highly protective big brother and was worried upon realising his little sister was going to be part of a world none of them had any knowledge about. He tried to make David feel welcome despite the younger boy’s hostility.
When David attempted to run away during his first stay with the Booths, Alex caught him in the act and made a deal, get past him and he wouldn’t tell anyone he’d left. Though David was tenacious, Alex stopped him every time even pointing out the flaws in David’s technique if he tried to physically fight Alex. After David finally gave up, Alex didn’t breathe a word of his run away attempt to anyone. David would take up Alex’s offer to teach him muay thai during his first visit.
Sarah Booth (step-sister):
Face Claim: Emilia Clarke
The middle child of the Booth siblings and also the least welcoming, Sarah was most vocally against Amelia being part of the wizarding world. She treated David coldly at first, going on a grouse hunting trip with her friends the day after he arrived to stay with them for Christmas.
However, at some point, she caught him reading an old copy of a Shooting Times magazine and after some persuasion by Alex, took David clay pigeon shooting. Becoming quite impressed, and even a little endeared from how quickly he picked up shooting.
Amelia Booth (step-sister):
Face Claim: Maisie Williams
A muggleborn witch and the youngest of the Booth siblings, Amelia was surprised to realise she possessed magical abilities. Though was even more shocked to learn Matthew already knew about it.
When she was five years old, she was involved in the car accident that killed her father. Resulting in her being scarred with a gash on the right side of her forehead, a similar one on her left cheek and a larger one that cuts across from shoulder to her chest. Though she repressed the memory, she did indeed see her father die, thus Thestrals are visible to her. Another thing the accident did was give her motorphobia, though can tolerate it as long as she’s A) In control of the vehicle and B) It’s not motorised.
However, she does have a love of cycling, she was taught to do so by her dad before he died. Similarly, gymnastics helped her get some of her confidence back after the accident and still keeps up with it. A love of plants and animals prompts her to excel in Herbology and Potions, then later COMC.

Professor Sprout, his head of house and someone he feels he can go to if he needs advice. One of several people who warned him about being careful with Patricia Rakepick.
Professor Mcgonagall, his Transfiguration teacher and head of Jacob’s house when he was at Hogwarts. Though they disagree entirely on him tackling the vaults, he always pays attention in her lessons as while she’s often stern she can be a great teacher.
Professor Flitwick, as his Charms teacher, David always found Flitwick to be respectable. David especially respects Flitwick for teaching him Expelliarmus, even after he was honest in what he intended to do with it (i.e. use it in a duel against Merula). Also came for Flitwick’s help in developing Cometa.
Least Favourite Professors:
Professor Binns: Finds his droning entirely too boring and really only passed History of Magic thanks to Rowan.
Every other professor he’s either neutral on (Snape and Trelwany) or he likes but aren’t his favourites (Kettleburn).
Best Canon friends:
Rowan Khanna
Diego Caplan
Nymphadora Tonks
Penny Haywood
Chiara Lobosca

Bill Weasley
Charlie Weasley
Erika Rath

Badeea Ali
Barnaby Lee
Liz Tuttle
Love interest:
Erika Rath (crush)
Nymphadora Tonks (first kiss)
Liz Tuttle (dated briefly in third year but broke things off fairly amicably when they realised they were developing crushes on other people).
Merula Snyde (began dating in fourth year, later marries David in 1994)
Best MC friends:
Judith Harris (@judediangelo75): The closest of his MC friends, David and Judith first get acquainted by being pushed into friendship... somewhat subtly by Penny Haywood. Both of them catch on when Penny mentions they should try out for the Quidditch team. Both of them still go for it, bonding over a shared love of martial arts and proving they have the potential to be fearsome beaters.
Throughout their time at Hogwarts, David and Judith would demonstrate a fierce loyalty to each other, being as close as siblings. David even becoming godfather to her children, Bakari and Kendrick.
Cato Reese (@catohphm): David was first introduced to Cato by Penny. The two find themselves sharing very similar values, having a great love their friends and absolute ruthlessness towards their enemies.
Like anyone involved in the Quidditch scene at Hogwarts, David has a bit of a rivalry with him. Tending to trash talk him (though with no real weight behind it), Cato understands that David doesn’t mean it.
Katriona Cassiopea (KC) (@kc-needs-coffee): The two of them are sports fanatics, they could talk to each other for hours about Quidditch. While David definitely knows more about footy, he’s eager to learn about any sport, such as baseball which KC is highly knowledgeable about.
KC would be one of the first to jump at the football matches David organises during his time at Hogwarts.
Lizzie Jameson (@lifeofkaze): Like David, Lizzie is an avid fan of LFC. Even meeting up at some point with their respective partners to watch a footy match at Anfield, where Liverpool were playing.
On the quidditch pitch, Lizzie is a chaser and knows she can count on David to keep the bludgers off her back.
If any of your MCs would want to be friends with David, let me know!
Rivals:
Merula Snyde (For most of his time at Hogwarts).
During Quidditch: Erika Rath, Skye Parkin, Andre Egwu, Charlie Weasley, Angelica Cole, Oliver Wood, Cato Reese and Katriona Cassiopea.
Enemies:
R (including Patricia Rakepick, Fenrir Greyback and Peter Pettigrew).
The Snyde family (minus Merula)
Voldemort
Death Eaters
Magical Abilities
1st Wand: Blackthorn, unicorn hair core, ten and a quarter inches, slightly springy and flexible. Snaps it in half shortly just before the end of sixth year, citing, “What kind of warrior can’t even protect his own brother?”
Blackthorn, which is a very unusual wand wood, has the reputation, in my view very well-merited, of being best suited to a warrior.
Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard. Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may ‘die’ and need replacing.
2nd Wand: English Oak, Dragon Heartstring core, twelve and a half inches, unbending.
A wand for the good times and bad, this is a friend as loyal as the wizard who deserves it. Wands of English Oak demand partners of strength, courage and fidelity. Obtained from Garrick Ollivander while being accompanied by Alastor Moody.
As a rule, dragon heartstrings produce wands with the most power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types. While they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner. The dragon wand tends to be easiest to turn to the Dark Arts, though it will not incline that way of its own accord. It is also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental.
Animagus form: A ram, specifically of a Dalesbred Sheep. Rams symbolise determination, initiative and leadership, factors that are put to the test more than once during his time at Hogwarts.
Misc magical abilities: Legilimens, Rue informs him of potentially inheriting her legilimens ability between third year and fourth year when he tells her of his delve into the Vault of Fear. David prefers not using it on people, rather using it to see through the eyes of animals as his great grandfather Reuben used to do.
Occlumency: Snape, at Dumbledore’s behest begins teaching David the art of Occlumency in fifth year.
Non-verbal magic: David began learning the non-verbal use of magic in fifth year thanks to professor Flitwick. Becoming highly skilled in it by his seventh year.
Spell creation: Assists in the creation of Stella Cascadia alongside Badeea Ali. Given how dangerous the vaults could be, he begins to work on another spell inspired by Stella Cascadia alongside several of his friends, Cometa, the comet jinx.
Boggart Form: Initially, Jacob as a death eater after hearing about the rumours of him taking Voldemort’s side.
From year four onwards, himself as a dark wizard as he worries about the path the vaults will set him on.
Riddikulus Form: Death eater Jacob’s mask turns into a pie that promptly splats him in the face.
Later, his dark wizard self in the uniform of Everton Football Club with a blue clown nose and wig to match. Since he’s a Liverpool Football Club supporter, seeing himself in one his rival team’s colours as a clown is hilarious to him.
Amortentia (what do they smell like?): A sea breeze and heather.
Amortentia (what do they smell?): Freshly mown grass and clear air after a rainfall.
Patronus: African wild dog, a symbol of his loyalty and relentless pursuit of his goals.
Patronus memory: -Attending the LFC vs Nottingham Forest semi final match of the Football League Cup at Anfield on the 12th February 1980 with his dad and Jacob. They drew 1-1 and LFC didn’t get through to the final but David was still happy to be there with both them.
Mirror of Erised: Jacob being back, alongside all of his friends and family. All of them are safe and well.
Specialised/ favourite spells:
Cometa, a spell that David creates in sixth year with the help of Badeea Ali, Rowan Khanna, Merula Snyde, Diego Caplan and professor Flitwick. Inspired by Stella Cascadia, and using some principles from the Ice Jinx, the spell initially creates cricket ball-sized pieces of ice that explode into a mist when they impact against something. This makes it especially useful for blinding or disorienting a target. Later they develop the more-powerful Cometa Maxima in seventh year. Its main limitations are maintaining eye contact directed at the target (as is the case for all jinxes) and its general range is quite short (about twenty five feet) due to the “comet” (really a mix of ice, dust and gases) disintegrating quite quickly.
Protego Diabolica, A spell taught to him by Felix Rosier in sixth year, nothing says “Get away from my friends!” Like a massive wall of blue flame that incinerates enemies and leaves allies unharmed.
Expelliarmus, the Disarming charm taught to David by Professor Flitwick in first year is one of his go-to spells when duelling.
Protego, learned in order to protect himself from spells and other projectiles.
Healing spells: Largely taught to him by Chiara throughout their time at Hogwarts, healing spells have come in handy more than once when he needs to preserve his own or his friend’s lives.
Expecto Patronum, though niche, a spell that can get rid of a dementor is nothing to scoff at. Plus it’s a sentimental reminder of his friendship with Tonks.
Incendio, good as a fire-starter and a duelling spell, also reminds him of a time when Merula stood up to Rita Skeeter for him by burning her camera.
Misc Information
-David is a huge supporter of Liverpool Football Club (LFC), so much so one of his casuals is a club uniform.
-As well as Needle, David has other creatures on the reserve, Lucky (Knarl), Clop (Porlock), Bonita (fairy), Mori (thestral), and Chen (Chinese fireball).

Let's talk about some Irish newsies-
Hey! So I thought it'd be cool to look into the research I've found indicationg that some of the newsies might have Irish ties! (I'm Irish so that might explain my interest) I'm not an expert at all or anything, this is just the research I've collminated while scouring through newsies facts.
Oh course this isn't set in stone, this is just information I've found so if I've got anything wrong, please tell me! I was inspired by this post to do my own research. (A lot of my research has to do with the original movie but stick around for some fun facts about surnames?)
And now, onto Jack Kelly :
^This is David's description of Jack in Newsies : a novel by Jonathan Fast which can be found here on pg 9. Both surnames "Kelly" and "Sullivan" have their roots in Irish history.
^on pg 27 of the same book David describes Jack again as "an Irish boy". I just thought this would be worth noting, seeing how David wants to make it obvious to us, the reader that Jack appears to be Irish or of Irish descent.
"Kelly", originally anglicized from the Gaelic "Ó Ceallaigh" meaning 'descendant of Ceallach', an ancient Irish personal name, originally a byname meaning 'bright-headed' or 'troublesome' (fitting huh?) Source found here.
Fun fact for you livesies fans, the reigning chieftain of Ui Maine (mid Galway, South Roscommon, sometimes referred to as "O'Kelly's Country") O'Ceallaigh (c1351), was a renowned patron of the arts. Source found here.
Another fun fact : Jack means Seán in Irish.
Bet you weren't expecting that. Or maybe you were. Anyway, source is found here. I also remember it being a topic of conversation in 3rd class Irish class. Wonder how Spot and Jack would feel about that.
^On pg 23 of the original 1992 movie script found here Jack describes himself as a "mick" which was a commonly used derogatory term used against those of Irish decent/Irish immigrants at the time. However this line was not included in the movie. Source found here.
Now for "Sullivan". The original Irish for the surname Sullivan is O'Suileabhain, however the actual derivation of the name is debated. There is no doubt that the root word is 'suil' meaning eye, but whether it is to be taken as 'one-eyed' or 'hawk-eyed' is usually left an open question. Sources found here and here.
The surname is associated with the southwestern part of Ireland and was originally found in County Tipperary before the Anglo-Norman invasion. Source found here
Also, in both movie and stage versions Jack tells us his father "taught me not to starve" indicating his father may have taught Jack about the horrors of the Famine/An Drochshaol/The Great Hunger that plagued Irish families for years after. Source is found here.
Okay! On to Spot Conlon :
^This is David's description of Spot Conlon from the same book, pg 51 (okay he may not outright say he's Irish but they really said "throw all the stereotypes at him like red hair". But seriously in the Hard Promises script and the Newsies script he's described the same way. I guess they really invisioned that red hair huh?)
Spot is interesting seeing as he is the leader of the Brooklyn newsies, Brooklyn being an infamously known place for Irish immigrants to live due to the Great Hunger/An Drochshaol (translated meaning "Hard Times") or as it's more commonly known as "the potato famine" between 1845-1852. Source found here. At least 1 million people died from this and another 1 million immigrated, a lot to America (although the exact numbers are disputed.) Around this time New York becoming the busiest port city in the world. There was labor work to be had in Brooklyn, in the manufacturing and loading and unloading of goods to be sent around the country and around the world. Irish immigrants who had been left poor and malnourished by the famine had no other option but to take on this manual labour to earn money. Many took jobs by the ports and settled by the Watershed i.e. near the ports. This could be a reason to why we're first introduced to Spot and his "cronies" at the port in the movie. Source is found here and here.
Supposing Spot was born between 1880-1886 (he's quoted to be 14 in real life in this article however it's stated in the Newsies Novel on pg 51 to "be around Jack's age" and it's stated in original script before Newsies was rewritten to be a musical and was still a drama, "Hard Promises" he's quoted to be 19 on pg 28. So take this with a grain of salt.) the U.S. census, which counted both place of birth and parents’ birth place as well, estimated that one-third of all New Yorkers were of Irish parentage. By 1890 as Brooklyn neighborhoods were expanding east and south, the amount of people with Irish stock is at 196,372. Source found here.
Also how people will usually use the name "Seán" or sometimes "Patrick" for Spot (one of the fandom wiki pages cites it as his real name here but admits to having no proof of it). Both of these are traditional Irish first names, Patrick being popularised by the patron saint of Ireland St. Patrick/Pádraig. Might have heard of it-
Now for his surname.
Conlon is an Irish family name, it being a variation of the anglicised version of Ó Connalláin. The name may be derived from two Irish Gaelic words "Con" (the genitive case of Cú, meaning "hound") and "Lón" meaning lion - thereby implying a person who has the characteristics of a lion born of a hound - strength and speed. Source found here.
Conlon had a Gaelic form of Ó Conallain or Ó Coinghiollan in Connacht however it's Ó Caoindealbhain in Munster and Leinster. Fun fact, Connal or Connall is claimed to be a pet name for a sprout or little sprout. Source found here.
The history regarding the Conlon surname is complicated to say the least- however it can be traced back to County Meath, where the Conlon descendants are from an important sept near Trim, which traces back to Laoghaire, King of Ireland circa 432. O'Coindealbhain was also anglicised 'Quinlivan' in Munster. Source is found here and here.
This post isn't letting me include the video of Jack, David and Boots going to Brooklyn to negotiate with Spot and the Irish traditional music in the background but I'll make a separate post about that.
Now, onto Racetrack Higgins.
I'm going to keep this kind of brief. We know Racetrack is described as "tall, skinny gambling Italian beanpole" in the Hard Promises script on pg 1 and he's described as "an Italian beanpole" on pg 5 of the Newsies Script. However the surname "Higgins" is Irish as far as my research has told me, not Italian.
The real Ed "Racetrack" Higgins lived in Brooklyn and is quoted to be the real leader of the Brooklyn union, and was elected vice-president of the general union after Kid Blink and David Simmons were accused of selling out. Source found here. I haven't been able to find much information about Racetrack Higgin's life after the strike or his family life which could connect him to Ireland however I thought it would be interesting. If anyone is curious about the real Racetrack Higgins this source has been really useful!
'Higgins" is an Irish family name with ancient royal connections. It is an anglicisation of O'hUigin, from the Irish word 'uiginn' meaning Viking. The original holder of the name was a grandson of Niall of the Nine Hostages, High King of Tara, and all of the O'Higgins claim a common descent from him. Ancient records show that several members of the O'Higgins claimed a hereditary right to be file or poet in the courts of the Irish Chiefs and Kings. Source is found here and here.
Because of their loyalty to Gaelic culture and religion, the Higgins suffered under the English Crown in Ireland and had lost all their lands in Sligo and Westmeath by 1654. Some of them remained in Ireland as tenants on their own lands, but many of them migrated to Spain where they achieved high office in the service of the King. Source is found here.
Fun fact, Racetrack has the same surname as the current (9th) President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins!
Lastly, on to Crutchy/ie Morris!
^This is from the 1991 original script of Newsies when it was called Hard Promises and was written to be a drama. Obviously this wasn't the movie that we have today but I thought this would be a cool add on. I couldn't find a lot of information about the real Crutch Morris, whom Crutchy/ie is based on. The surname Morris isn't strictly Irish, it's a popular surname throughout the British Isles however with this piece of information I thought it would make sense to research it anyway.
"Morris" (Ó Muiris in Irish) was introduced to Ireland by the Normans, along with the variant Firzmaurice (Mac Muiris). A branch of these Morrises moved to Galway in 1485 CE and later became one of the Tribes Of Galway. The name may also have been an abbreviation of Morrissey (Ó Muireasa), a branch of the Uí Fiachrach clan. Sources found here and here.
The ancient Irish name Ó Muirgheasa (variant Ó Muirghis), a personal name thought to derive from muir, meaning "sea" and geas, meaning "taboo" or "prohibition." Source found here.
The Morris family does have an Irish family crest/coat of arms which I'll post at a later date, further cementing themselves in Irish history.
This is most of the information I have regarding the origins of the characters and their surnames however I could go on about the music in Newsies, the family crests, the housing circumstances of poor Irish immigrants in New York at the turn of the 19th century ect.
If you want to learn more about what life was like for Irish immigrants in New York I recommend reading the non-fiction book The Gangs Of New York (or watching the movie. It isn't completely historically accurate but give a decent overview of what was life) or reading this article by the Irish Times.
I've barely scratched the surface of this topic and hope to go into it father in the future!
May I leave you with this gif of the boys doing some Irish (inspired) dancing and David with his twirl combo!
Ps. If the links aren't working for you I'd be happy to provide a list of the resources I’ve used throughout my research on a separate post if needs be.
pps. @maggs-is-a-muppet @annihilatedthenightstalker @newsies-bun @letter-from-the-refuge thanks for the motivation last night 😌

Max Mayfield and Tory Nichols in a horror film, what would be the plot/monster and would they survive?
this is it. this is the tumblr ask. the ask i've been waiting for my whole life. my time to shine, here we go!
filming begins under the cut:
tried and true creature feature, this is a werewolf movie. let's go with a werewolf between the van helsing (2004) and trick r treat (2007) variety. the beast once transformed is fucking huge, clearly both lupine and human, head almost entirely wolf, body primarily bipedal in shape, but robust, sinew shredding claws and big ass bone tearing teeth. also tails!! bc tails are cute!!! powers include monstrous strength, accelerated speed, healing factor. weaknesses silver and decapitation.
okay, so van helsing (2004) werewolves are mindless rage monsters and trick r treat (2007) werewolves are cognizant. for our max & tory creature feature, they're gonna of the in between variety. i chose a werewolf movie for these two specifically bc they both have their anger problems and the werewolf has long been a symbol of anger unleashed in the horror genre, even tho common gray wolves are just like. i mean, yk, animals, they hunt and howl and pee on trees and most of the time would rather avoid humans. but obvi horror genre werewolves are not common gray wolves, they need to be scary, and like, the remnants of traditional folklore influenced by rabies and discourse in the middle ages...wait, where was i going with this? anger, yes, max and tory both have anger problems and i think this works for what i'm gonna do with this theoretical movie.
who's the werewolf in town? terry fucking silver. bc terry is evil and dramatic and also, i think it's rly funny for a werewolf to have silver as a surname. he's fully cognizant in his transformation and he's purposefully biting kids and teenagers bc he wants more talented karate students. and like. yk, with the enhanced strength, speed, and regenerative recovery of lycanthropy, well. there u have it, more talented karate students.
do max and tory know each other, if so, how? okay, so in this 'verse tory is a lil older than max. that reflects their canon ages, i think. let's say max is 13 and tory is 16. billy has tory in some of his classes and he more or less makes a deal to spilt his allowance with her if she'll babysit max bc he's tired of neil riding his ass to babysit max. tory needs money so she's like, 'sure, why not.' max finds it rly stupid that she's 13 and neil thinks she needs a fucking babysitter but as far as babysitters go, tory is fun. she likes to show max what she's learning in cobra kai and they spar together a lot. max would actually like to join cobra kai but 1) neil would throw a fit on various fronts and 2) lucas is in miyagi-do. max knows there's some rly intense beef between cobra kai and miyagi-do. ofc tory's filled her in on the karate war, how could she not?
well one day tory takes max to the playground to watch a plane fly like she does with miggy in ck, and it's nighttime, ofc, and lo, the full moon is out. shining up in the sky. they hear a howl. they both look at each other. max is kinda curious but tory's like nah, nah, we gotta go. she grabs her, starts pulling her along. but the next howl is a lot closer and they can hear smth running and it just sounds fuckin big. they're running too now, legs pumping hard, but there's no escape once the beast is right behind them, hot, rancid breath blasting the backs of their necks and harvest gold eyes glowing in the dark.
max gets bitten first. tory tries to kick the big ass beast off of her and then it rounds and bites her too. the terror is real now. and then shockingly, as fast as it'd come, it leaves. neither girl has an explanation for wtaf just happened but tory takes max home. billy gripes at her for being out late but helps her patch up. when susan learns what happens she decides to take max to get rabies shots right away. loads her up in the car, runs her off to the emergency room-- but when the bandages come off, they are no wounds.
tory's bby bro tries to help patch her up too. but he's like 4 yrs old and his idea of "help" is sticking bandaids with cartoon characters up and down the wounds in haphazard fashion. tory plans to redo it all properly once she's put him to bed. sure enough after he's asleep, and she peels the bandaids off from every open mouthed pac-man to every green teenage mutant ninja turtle, the wounds are gone.
meanwhile there's missing ppl err day on the news. terry turns kids and teens but kills adults for the lulz.
tory and max know what happened to them was an event that tangibly, definitely happened but neither have any explanation for their wounds just disappearing. max, our resident horror fan, is the first to propose a real life werewolf as an explanation. she cites the missing ppl on the news. tory thinks she's tripping balls but reluctantly gives an inch when she acknowledges no, she can't think of any other explanation.
life goes on. max tells lucas what happened only she leaves out the part abt tory bc she's not gonna tell a miyagi-do student she's kickin it w the enemy. he doesn't rly believe her, like how she didn't rly believe him about the upside-down in their canon. he thinks the horror movies are rotting her brain.
tory almost tells her dojo but she gets distracted being pissed off by sam and that should be her priority, right? sensei kreese is always going on abt getting back at the enemy. she spends her shifts daydreaming abt revenge bc it's more comforting than worrying abt past due bills and her mother looking paler by the day.
full moon next month comes around. neither tory nor max are cognizant of or during their first respective transformations. max's first kill is neil. she's seven feet of fur and fury, tears his ribcage open with claws like daggers and sinks her teeth into his putrid, maggoty heart. susan isn't home. billy is, but he doesn't hear any of the fracas. he's unconscious on the living room floor, crisscrossing impressions of neil's belt buckle blaring red on his back.
tory's first kill is sam. sam larusso wants to think she's a bully?? fine, tory will show her a bully. she hops the miyagi-do fence after hours. she just wants a fight. just a fight, they always fight. but then she's sprouting fur and tory as tory gives way to smth else. she'd not aware of being a person when she doesn't have fur. not really, all she knows is rage and ravenousness and the morsel below her has bunny rabbit wide eyes.
neither of them remember what they did the next day. not vividly, anyway. it's there but it's cloudy and hard to discern, like a groggy fever dream more than a memory. but max burps up neil's wedding band and tory finds señor octopus (sam's stuffed animal) bloodied in her bed. it's apparent what happened. max accepts this more easily than tory bc 1) she always kind of suspected she'd turn, since she sincerely considered what attacked them was a werewolf and 2) max isn't terribly upset abt killing neil while tory is acutely horrified she killed sam.
max kinda had some smidgen of attachment to neil bc like, he's the only father figure in her life and here and there they've had their moments. but his abuse (psychological/physical toward billy, sexual/financial/psychological/emotional toward susan, psychological/emotional toward herself) outweighed any and all of those moments. she is genuinely concerned that she tore a human being to pieces and only vaguely remembers it but like, if she had to kill anyone, she figures neil was the best to kill. max is mostly concerned bc she can't kill neil a second time. she's worried the next time she turns it could be an innocent person, or one of her friends, or her mom, or billy.
tory is blindsided and scarcely able to comprehend the reality, holy shit, max was right, she's a fuckin werewolf. and she's sick to her stomach bc she hated sam but she never wanted to do anything like that. she didn't want to kill, she just wanted to break her face. scare her. rough her up. she didn't want to eat her. she just killed someone. she's a literal horror movie monster and she just killed sam. what's miguel going to think?
tory and max talk. they decide they need to find the werewolf who turned them. we get montages of them going over the news articles with a fine-toothed *ba dum tss* comb and searching areas where it seems like a werewolf would be. the woods. some caves. max all of a sudden has a freakishly tall man constantly hounding her to join cobra kai. neil's gone but she still hesitates bc of lucas being in miyagi-do. also he believes max now and with the proff, she's decided to let the rest of the party in as well. they also exist in this 'verse. she showed them the crime scene and the wedding band she burped up. billy isn't a roid rage racist in this 'verse bc that would be a giant buzzkill. he doesn't believe the werewolf shit either. he thinks max saw neil get attacked by some animal and that the carnage was so traumatizing for her, she subconsciously created a werewolf fantasy to cope.
tory meanwhile spirals downward. bc she passes sam's memorialized locker in the hall everyday. her memorial table in the other hall, full of sticky note condolences and mournful teddy bears, and a picture of sam right in the center always, always accusing her. miggy is heartbroken and distraught. hawk didn't care for sam but even he's freaked out by what happened, how the news said there were only torn up chunks and bones picked clean found in her bedroom. tory is terrified of herself. she's desperate to find whoever did this bc she wants to make them pay. if sensei silver has been asking her extra questions lately and presenting her performance to the class more than normal, she doesn't notice at all. aisha notices tory's fucked up but tory can't exactly tell aisha that she *ate* sam. aisha is also mourning, she and sam used to be bffs. so she doesn't say a word.
max has a theory that if u can learn to control ur anger, u can learn to control urself when u shift. she is, after all, v familiar with angry horror movie werewolves. and she's savvy enough to know it's smth she and tory have in common. neil is dead but that doesn't mean max isn't angry anymore. she's still angry at the damage already done and tbh also angry that there's some werewolf around turning ppl willy nilly bc she recognizes the danger in that and it wasn't smth she consented to. but controlling ur anger is an easier feat for max than tory insofar that max has a support system w her friends, and better relationships with the remainder of her fam. tory has two mentors actively, adamantly teaching her and her friends to be ruthless, view the world as ur enemy, use violence as ur go-to solution, and that mercy is weakness not to be tolerated.
when the next full moon rolls around, they decide to spend it together under the correct inference that they will transform. they think it's better to be together. they're hoping they'll be able to control each other, if not themselves. or that if they are both mindless rage monsters again, that rage will be turned on each other. this would be a better outcome operating on the presumption that one werewolf will be able to take what another can dish out, at the v least more so than a regular human being.
max is successfully able to maintain enough of her consciousness to control her actions once transformed. she feels aggressive and hungry, but not enraged and ravenous. she can keep it in check. tory, on the other hand, uh...tory can't do it. she throws her wolf head back in the most bloodcurdling howl ever and takes off like a bat outta hell. max goes loping after her. they can't speak like human speak in this form, but max tries to communicate with her. whimpers plaintively. tackles tory at one point, not out of anger but just tryna subdue her, licks at her ears and tries to get her to settle. tory bucks her off.
tory runs off again, max in pursuit. they wind up at the skate park where billy n robby are prolly up to some fuckery or another. i could easily see pre miyagi-do robby n billy getting up to all kinds of mischief. ooh, actually, they're prolly arguing abt that. now that robby's in miyagi-do he has another outlet for all his energy and he's getting the positive attention he craves so he's not participating in hooligan activity or shenanigans w billy anymore and billy is like. offended. except suddenly there's werewolves. fucking. snarling, gigantic, toothy, hairy ass werewolves.
let's say robby kicked miguel down two stories in this 'verse too and tory recognizes him in her werewolf form even if she isn't exactly cognizant of herself. she tears straight for him, jaws open. billy doesn't exactly *mean* to protect him but it's kinda an automatic reaction from putting himself in between whenever he thought neil was getting too aggressive w susan or max. and like, sure, robby's the better fighter (not that billy would ever acknowledge this) but it's not like he's gonna karate kick the motherfuckin werewolf anyway-- billy is bigger, he's bigger and it's instinct and the next thing he knows, he's in between robby and the thing w sharp teeth (tory).
and that's when max gets serious. she bowls tory over, away from billy before she can bite. they're rolling, tearing at each other with teeth and claws. lo and behold, terry silver is lurking in the background like the evil mastermind he is, just watching them shred each other and evaluating his experiment. it's a p close match and tory is the more aggressive of the two but she's also been going, going, going since she shifted and she's burning herself out. she's also fighting with the blind instinct of a threatened animal while max maintains more precision bc she has better control of herself. max also isn't wasting energy unnecessarily. max gets her jaws around tory's throat and tory just goes slack. but she can think and she doesn't want to hurt tory, so she opens her mouth and relaxes her maw, teeth grazing harmlessly thru tory's fur.
tory's being shown mercy. possibly for the first time. it's so unlike her conception of others' ruthlessness, so unlike the worldview that's been instilled into her that it startles her enough to crack thru to her cognizance. she does the wolfy deference thing where they tuck their tails and lick at the dominant pack member's muzzle. max responds in kind and lets tory up.
this is when they notice terry lurking (billy's already worked out the werewolf that came to his defense is max so he's just dumbfounded watching all this shit, and robby's not abt to leave someone who just saved his ass, so he's stuck unsuccessfully tryna pull billy away and inevitably watching too). terry calmly slinks over, sizing up his charges. he's pleased with the performance. but tory and max are anything but, another werewolf fight ensues.
so while they all get huge after transforming sheerly on the basis of being werewolves, i'm gonna guess the size is proportionate to their human forms. so tory is a little larger than max and terry significantly outsizes them both. terry is also the more experienced werewolf. it's two against one but it's not the curbstop it would be if this was some weaksauce werewolf, it's dramatic evil karate werewolf terry fuckin silver. terry's shredding tf outta these two. their healing factor can't keep up, he's dishing out faster than either of them can recover and tbh they were already winded from fighting each other first.
but it'd be a major buzzkill if our movie had a downer ending. and also, the power of determination and friendship and shit. terry's got his jaws around max's throat now. he's a millisecond away from tearing it open. tory's pinned under him but she thinks fast, frees a hind leg, and rips her claws down his soft underbelly as deep as she can and doesn't stop ripping, like pedal kicking almost for a human, but with her hind claws. his intestines shoot out like paper snakes from a gag candy can!! okay, well, maybe they don't shoot out w that much gusto, but still. the bowels are free, the bowels are hanging low and tory's tearing 'em tf up, fluids n fecal matter errywhere. on tory. i'm sorry tory. ur under him, that's just how gravity works.
terry dies. healing factor can't keep up with the damage done, it's too critical. but nobody knows it's terry until the dawn breaks and he reverts back to his human shape.
max is v much 'i told u so,' in billy's face. robby promises not to tell. he doesn't want to get mauled or killed or anything. tory's able to cope better with what she did to sam knowing that it won't happen again, that she won't hurt anyone else she doesn't want to be she can control herself now. tory believes in mercy now bc max spared her, she trashes kreese's philosophy and joins eagle fang when johnny and daniel join forces in this 'verse too. max also joins eagle fang, takes her place in the front row right between tory and lucas at her v first practice.
credits roll.
after the credits we see tory considering turning her mother in the hopes that having the healing factor would help her mom's condition improve.
is that a teaser for the sequel?
idfk.

A reminder just in case anyone needs it: Japanese surnames typically describe a place or the origin of the family it belongs to, for instance if a family came from a “forest origin”, their name might be Morimoto. Or someone from a “snowy village” would be Yukimura. MHA names are not quite so literal or realistic (like Usagiyama “rabbit mountain”), and are meant to be a little more fun.
Keep in mind that this is not a complete or comprehensive list, and that these are NOT all the readings for the kanji. Some of these kanji have different nanori that were not included in this list.
Also a quick note in case anyone was wondering:
When to use KAMI vs. GAMI, SAWA vs. ZAWA, etc.?
Sometimes when you put two kanji next to each other in a name, the second kanji has a different pronunciation/reading. Why? The short answer is, it’s easier to pronounce that way. So some short rules:
Putting two or more kanji together is like a compound word in English, and when you “link” those kanji together, sometimes the latter kanji sounds different (NEVER the first kanji though).
Most kana have a “voiced” (dakuten) version and some have a “half-voiced” (handakuten) version, but it’s mostly the “voiced” version that occurs in pronunciation/spelling when “linking” two kanji.
“ka” ⟶ “ga”, “ki” ⟶ “gi”, etc.
“sa” ⟶ “za” (note: “shi” ⟶ “ji”)
“ta” ⟶ “da” (note: “chi” ⟶ “ji/dji” and “tsu” ⟶ “zu/dzu”)
“ha” ⟶ “ba” or “pa” (though “pa” isn’t used for linking, it’s the “half-voiced” sound)
In the list of kanji above, the 2nd “spelling” for the kanji is the “voiced” pronunciation, for your ease!
Not every linked kanji will change its sound. It’s probably subjective to whoever came up with the family name to begin with, but basically the sounds will be voiced if the person who has the name thinks it flows better as a voiced sound.
Remember that while you might not hear a huge difference in “Ota” and “Oda” or something, there are different nuances in Japanese language that native speakers will pick up that you will not. You might not understand why some names “link” the sounds and others don’t, but to native speakers it makes sense.
In the case of MHA names though? I’d say don’t worry about it too much. Go with the flow of whatever sounds best--or whatever puns the best. (Like Mina Ashido’s surname! Typically it’s pronounced Ashito, but Ashido sounds a lot more like “acid” than Ashito does, right? :D)
Want to read more on the subject of name kanji, know about their history/culture, and look at some examples? Here’s a couple links to a few other sites that list more kanji and readings than what was included on this list too, as well as more info on the spellings and kanji “linking”: [ 1 2 3 4 5 6 ]

HOLLYWOOD BOND CAVALCADE
September 4, 1943
On September 4, 1943, the Hollywood Bond Cavalcade departed to raise money for America’s Third War Loan. It began in Washington DC and went through 16 American cities before ending in San Francisco 21 days later. Millions of Americans flocked to these events buying war bonds as their tickets, with seat prices ranging from $18.75 to $1 million. After crossing 10,091 miles, the campaign raised a total of $40,110,000 and pushed America’s War Loan over the $2 billion mark.
The Hollywood Victory Committee was an organization founded on December 10, 1941 during World War II to provide a means for stage, screen, television and radio performers that were not in military service to contribute to the war effort through bond drives and improving morale for troops. It was associated with the Screen Actors Guild. The Committee organized events between January 1942 until August 1945. Its first chairman was Clark Gable.
This was not the first such event. In 1942, Desi Arnaz participated in the Hollywood Victory Caravan. He was joined by stars Joan Bennett, Joan Blondell, Charles Boyer, James Cagney, Claudette Colbert, Jerry Colonna, Bing Crosby, Olivia de Havilland, Cary Grant, Charlotte Greenwood, Bob Hope, Frances Langford, Laurel and Hardy, Bert Lahr, Groucho Marx, Frank McHugh, Ray Middleton, Merle Oberon, Pat O'Brien, Eleanor Powell, and Risë Stevens. The Caravan show played in 12 cities and netted over $700,000 for Army and Navy relief funds. [Note that in the above Minneapolis welcome sign, Desi’s surname is mis-spelled!]
Along with Lucille Ball, some of the celebrities involved included:
James Cagney ~ had just opened his film Johnny Come Lately on September 3, 1943.
Judy Garland ~ won a 1940 special Oscar for her contributions to film. In September 1943, she released Thousands Cheer (co-starring Lucille Ball) and two months later, Girl Crazy with Mickey Rooney.

Paul Henreid ~ was most known for playing Victor Laszlo in Casablanca (1942). His name was mentioned on “I Love Lucy” in “The Adagio” (ILL S1;E12) when Ricky lights two cigarettes at once, just a Paul Henreid did for Bette Davis in 1942′s Now Voyager.
Greer Garson ~ won Oscars in 1940, 1942, and 1943, for Mrs. Miniver, her most recent success at the time. She had a film in release called The Youngest Profession and was about to debut another hit, Madame Curie.

Fred Astaire ~ was one of Hollywood’s most legendary dancers. In July 1943 he released The Sky’s The Limit with Joan Leslie. In 1943, he had already done three musical films with Lucille Ball, and was about to film a fourth - Ziegfeld Follies. His name was mentioned on two episodes of “I Love Lucy.”

A Typical Cavalcade Performance (depending on celebrity availability)
Kay Kyser served as master of ceremonies and started the show with his band's theme "Thinking Of You". James Cagney came on to read a poem - "What Do We Do When We Buy A Bond" - and did two numbers and a dance from Yankee Doodle Dandy, for which he had recently won the Academy Award. Dick Powell then crooned some of his hits: "Don't Give Up The Ship," "Let's Get Lost," "In My Arms," and "Happy Go Lucky".
Harpo Marx would intermittently chase a blonde across the stage. He eventually settled down to play two harp solos, bang on the piano, wheeze on the harmonica, and finally played a pantomime poker game with Lucille Ball, who had appeared with Harpo in Room Service in 1938 and learned physical comedy at his knee. Harpo ended the game by cutting the cards with an ax!
After Fred Astaire danced, Kyser brought down the house with a burlesque imitation of his style. Mickey Rooney did imitations of Franklin Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Wendell Wilkie, and then played the drums.
Betty Hutton performed some hot boogie-woogie. Judy Garland sang "The Man I Love," "Embraceable You," and "Blow, Gabriel, Blow."
Greer Garson urged continued bond purchases, saying, "If we relax, if we don't back the attack, the war will go on indefinitely."
Upon arrival in Washington DC on September 8, Lucille Ball and the stars paraded through the streets in military jeeps, waving to the assembled crowds on their way to the Washington Monument. A similar parade was held in most all subsequent cities.
After departing DC, the stars embarked on a 15 city ‘barn-storming’ tour of American cities.
September 9 ~ the Cavalcade played Philadelphia's Convention Hall...
...and moved to play Boston on September 10.
September 11 ~ at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It was here that Betty Hutton announced her engagement to camera manufacturer Ted Briskin. They tied the knot in 1945 but the marriage ended in divorce in 1951.
September 12 ~ Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The newspapers promoted its arrival with this photo from their Los Angeles departure.
September 13 ~ the Cavalcade rolled through Cleveland, Ohio the stars spoke to an assembly of Defense Workers. That night, at the Civic Auditorium, Kay Kyser auctioned off an American flag for $10,000,000 and two pounds of butter and a three pound steak for $100,000 each!
September 14 ~ Detroit, Michigan
September 15 ~ Cincinnati, Ohio. Stars rode into town on chartered Cincinnati Street Railway buses kicked off at Union Station. Lucille Ball is 8th from the right, next to Harpo Marx.
September 16 in Chicago’s Soldier Field.
September 17 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
September 18 in St. Louis, Missouri at the Kiel Auditorium. Most of the stars lodged at the Hotel Jefferson, where police had to chase 300 autograph hounds out of the lobby. They also had to drag a high school girl out from beneath Fred Astaire's bed. In another incident, surging fans shattered a plate glass window, which tore Judy Garland's dress to shreds.
September 19 was left as an ‘open’ day in New Orleans, Louisiana, before their official performances on September 20 at the Tad Gormley Stadium. Variety reported the crowd at 50,000, The States stated it was between 65,000 and 75,000, while The Item claimed 100,000 showed up, despite the actual venue only seating 35,000!
September 21 in Dallas, Texas at the Cotton Bowl...
...and in San Antonio, Texas on September 22.
September 25 in San Francisco to perform...
...and on September 26 went home to Los Angeles to conclude the 10,000 mile tour. A crowd of 6,000 greeted them at the station in Glendale as the Navy Band played "California, Here I Come."
The song would memorably be sung on “I Love Lucy” to launch the Hollywood episodes in 1955.
Lucille Ball helped sell bonds throughout her career. Click here for a look at Lucy and US Savings Bonds!

Hints regarding last RAIN post & Pitch
In line with the post regarding Tobin’s whole deal, I’m gonna do one with Pitch.
I’ll start by saying yes; Pitch was planned to be Nyssa’s father from the conception of his character - otherwise the character would have never existed. So without further delay, let’s get into it:
Evidence in Design & Character Basis
Pitch’s name, is a reference to the term ‘Pitch Black’. Like Nyssa, his signature colour is Black.
He’s only ever known by ‘Pitch’, and it’s never clarified whether it’s a forename or a surname (it’s a surname, Nyssa took ‘Noirette’ from her mother.)
Pitch’s weapon is literally a sword with a built in gun, just like Nyssa’s own revolver-swords.
Pitch is derived from the Greek God of the Dog Star, Seirios (Where he gets his forename from), who operated under many guises - including Laelaps, the hound of Orion. Pitch himself was the personal guard to Orion Lincoln - his loyal hound.
Evidence in the Comic
Pitch’s first appearance on Page 312 introduces the reason for his helmet. He is scarred, sure, but this was also an easy way to hide his ears and his general facial features.
Page 425: Nyssa says she feels like Pitch is ‘staring at [them]’ - he’s staring at her specifically.
Page 535: Pitch obviously sleeps without his armour on, but hides his identity with bandages. One can observe him carrying a mug that says “World’s Greatest Dad” - an ironic hint at his absentee father status - and his skin tone is incredibly close to Nyssa’s (I think it was actually the same in this scene).
Pitch is absent during Chapter 4. He’s probably stalking Nyssa and Irving.
Page 641: Pitch reappears after being absent for a few chapters, and tries to probe Robin for information on where the others are. He words it as a general question, but he’s growing ever more concerned. This leads into...
...Page 643: After hearing from Robin that Nyssa is headed to the Sisterhood, the home of someone who knows his identity, Pitch snaps and punches a wall. This reveals his aura - something banned from Lincoln society - and that is the first overt hint to him not being what he seems.
I’m sure there are more hints somewhere, but these are the stand-outs.
