Manga I've read that were licensed in english in 2022-2023

Meant to do this roundup forever but I some pleasant surprises the last 2 years when I saw these titles I enjoyed in Japanese be licensed/re-released in English and wanted to do a very short roundup. I unfortunately can't attest to the quality of the print editions or the translations as I haven't been able to justify a double purchase just yet but still recommend these as fun and interesting reads. Voiceplay Visuals: Queen In 5 Minutes

This is one of those videos where I'm gonna have to remind myself to not talk about the music, because Queen is awesome, I know quite a decent amount of their songs, and this arrangement/performance is really freaking good. But the video itself certainly isn't boring either (Freddie would be proud), and I'm very excited to talk about this one, so let's go! (Yeah this one's a long one, you have been warned)

Apparently this video (released on the 24th of November, 2018) was at least in part inspired by a health scare that Earl had while touring with Voiceplay, which no doubt was very distressing for all of them, but he obviously was fine or got better, which I'm glad about, and this video is creative as heck!

Won't talk about their appearances just yet, but of course I gotta point out the iconic Bohemian Rhapsody diamond configuration thing!

Cool necklace! I don't know the exact meaning of it, and whether or not it was just acquired for the video, but I do know that the album/track image for this cover on Spotify takes inspiration from it!

I have no clue what mythological being Layne's character is meant to be based off of, if any - "Guardian" is a bit of a vague name after all - and the main thing that popped up when I typed "mythology sentinel of the underworld" into Google was Cerberus, the three-headed guard dog from Ancient Greek myths. And well... it'd check out actually. Layne doesn't talk/sing in this video (not counting vocal percussion of course), he's wearing a big furry grey coat, and none of the other 3 are from Greek (or even Roman) mythology, so it's entirely possible that "Guardian" could just be a human-form Cerberus (minus the two extra heads).

Apparently "Yama" is the Hindu god of death and justice, though he was also adopted into Buddhist, Chinese, Tibetan, Korean, and Japanese mythology as the king of hell, so-

A 19th-century painting of Yama on his mount depicts him as completely blue, so Eli's blue face paint definitely fits.

("Dark angel" definitely sounds fitting)

Geoff is based on Baron Samedi, who is a spirit (Iwa) of the dead in Haitian Vodou, as well as of course the more well-known Louisiana/New Orleans Voodoo. Fun fact: Dr Facilier in The Princess And The Frog is partly inspired by Baron Samedi!

I'm sure most if not all of us have heard of Anubis, but regardless, Anubis is the Ancient Egyptian god of funerary rites, and he's also a protector of graves, and of course, a guide to the underworld. He can take both human and animal form, and in artwork is often depicted with the body of a man and head of a jackal/canine animal (which Voiceplay subtly refers to in this shot here with the little Anubis Shrine statue sitting next to J)

"Anubis" is of course weighing Earl's heart against a feather to see whether or not he is worthy of ascending to the heavenly afterlife. And since the heart appears to be slightly lighter, he's good! (Not that he's actually ready to pass on, though)

(Also, from a production viewpoint, I'm guessing they had some small stones or counterweights hiding underneath the feather?)

Not talking about the arrangement but I'd like to thank the Good Omens fandom, because I wouldn't have recognized/known the bridge of Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy in this medley otherwise (I didn't first see this video until like a year or so after it first came out)

If you ever wind up in hospital, don't actually try to rip out IV drips or cannulas or any other tubes connected to your body!

If I had a nickel for every time a different member of Voiceplay played air guitar in a video, I'd have at least four nickels! (Earl here, Cesar in Hellfire, Eli in Top 10 Sitcom Themes, and Geoff in at least three or more videos (maybe 5 if we count J None in the Frozen 2 Medley))

There's a reason why so many people adore this video/cover. The arrangement is stunning, the vocals are great, the costumes are cool, the makeup is really well done, and the whole plot/direction of the video is such a creative and original concept! Outfit 3 won the poll for Elizabeth's next outfit redesign, so here ya go!

What I changed:

I made her skirt shorter, but gave her long pants underneath, just to make her outfit more interesting

The ruffles on her jacket didn't make any sense, so I just made the sleeves bell out (or whatever the right word is)

Her boots also made no sense. Why did they randomly have fur when there's no other fur on her outfit? And assuming Brittania has a warm climate, having furry boots would be really uncomfortable when she's running, jumping, climbing, and fighting all day.

Gave her four smaller wings on her lower back since that's what I'm giving Goddess Elizabeth (who I renamed Uriel to not cause confusion) in my rewrite

Kept her original bangs, because the ones she originally has with this outfit look bad, and they remind me of Vivian... Who I hate, along with all the other pedos in this damn anime-

Gave her a necklace with the crux immissa quadrata, because I'm adding a lot of Ancient Greek and Roman influence into my rewrite, and it's the Greek version of The Cross in Christianity... Because there's a lot of surface level Biblical references in SDS

And ofc, by the time she's in this outfit, she'd be 18... Because a 15 to 16 year old wearing the outfits she's constantly put in is just... Creepy-

Well how about... A dog-wife!? Alagadda wouldn't be a full-fledged citadel of debauchery and decadence without its own furry hangout!.. Well, it's not furries - it's chimeras. Two or more bodies fused into one and raised by the power of the Hanged King. 

Meet the inhabitant of Alagadda and the servant of the Red Lord, half a woman, half a dog - Guzelit, a rare phenomenon even for Alagadda.

At the court of the Wearer of the Mirthful Mask, Guzelit has two positions at once. The first is quite expected - a simple concubine, basking in luxury and excess. But the second position is a consequence of the fact that her mongrel soul (although there is as much of a real dog in her as there are grapes in Alagadda’s wine - and then it's time to remember that it is made from a different kind of juices) gets tired of the monotony of a well-fed life too quickly. Usually the servants of the Red Lord are faceless, and lead an unremarkable existence full of excesses, but if you meet a Guzelit, you will definitely remember her, and not only because of her outstanding appearance. She is charming, sharp-tongued and playful - It is her job to amuse the Lord and his guests at receptions and feasts held by him, and she always has the latest and most interesting rumors, stories and jokes in store. She is a parasite, an heiress of the ancient Roman and Greek profession.

Parasites were men who were specially invited to feasts and celebrations for a fee to entertain guests and hosts with conversations and stories. For Guzelit, this is a good way to see as many new faces and stock up as many fresh rumors as possible to tell them at another feast.

 Such a stormy life, filled with passions of all kinds, brings her pleasure. In any company, she becomes a welcome guest, and in any environment finds a place under the sun. However, her ability to blend into any society made her almost insensitive to someone else's grief. She cares little about the fate of other servants or her lovers, and sometimes she crosses the line even with her close friend – the servant of the Yellow Lord named Asmodir. Therefore, if you meet a charming chimera in a hat with feathers – be careful. No one knows what her flighty Lord will demand of her this time.

More interesting facts:

1. All chimera residents have more than one mask on their body. For Guzelit, such is attached to the back of her head – and she hides it behind the fabric of the headdress. 2. On her hat you can notice the figure of a sparrow – an ancient symbol of fertility, dexterity, cunning and... harlots. Lol. 3. In my interpretation, the abode of the Red Lord is called Mercurian Towers of the Winged Lion. And the statue that Guzilit leaned on is a reference to who she serves. 4. Chimeras prefer to stick together. Really like a little furry party... 5. And the head of all furries is the Yellow Lord! Almost all of Alagadda's chimeras eventually become his subordinates, to the envy and bewilderment of the other Lords. Chimera is a rare and desirable acquisition for them. But for some reason, only Citrinitas is surrounded by a lil Alagalla’s mess up menagerie... He-he-he!

L’appel du vide: You’re waiting for the train when an inexplicable thought flashes into your mind: What if you jumped off the platform? Or perhaps you’re driving up some precarious mountain pass, when you feel strangely moved to jerk your steering wheel to the right and sail clear off the road. American psychologists in 2012 published a paper in which this feeling was dubbed the “high place phenomenon” (and their study suggested, by the way, that its presence does not necessarily signal suicidal ideation), but the French term for the phenomenon is much more alluring, as French words so often are: l’appel du vide, or “the call of the void.” As the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre once observed, the emotion is so unsettling because of the way it “creates an unnerving, shaky sensation of not being able to trust one’s own instincts.” It’s a reminder, then, to perhaps not always let your emotions rule your behavior.

Ilinx: There exists a GIF of a fluffy white cat that speaks directly to my soul. Umpty: Perkin Flump is in a very bad mood. (The Flumps was a 1970s children’s cartoon presenting the home life of a family of round furry creatures who lived in northern England.) The water is too cold. The floor is too bumpy. His porridge is too lumpy and too sticky. “I feel umpty” he tells his mother. “What’s umpty?” she asks. “It’s a too-much morning” he explains and stomps off to be on his own. Umpty: a feeling of everything being “too much” and all in the wrong way.

Mono no aware: Murasaki Shikibu, a poet and lady-in-waiting in 12th-century Japan, crafted what is often described today as the world’s first novel, The Tale of Genji. Set in the imperial court, it recounts the political intrigues and love affairs of an emperor’s illegitimate son. The book is infused with a quiet feeling for life’s transience, a sensitivity to the beauty of decay and the fading of all living and inanimate things. To read it is to become well acquainted with the feeling the Japanese call mono no aware (pronounced: moh-noh noh ah-wah-ray). Literally translated as the pathos (aware) of things (mono), it is often described as a kind of a sigh for the impermanence of life. "Monoaware" is "the pathos of things." It is the awareness of the impermanence of all things and the gentle sadness and wistfulness at their passing. "Bitter sweetness of fading beauty".

Itadakimasu - means “I will have this." It is used before eating any food to express appreciation and respect for life, nature, the person who prepared the food, the person who served the food, and everything else that is related to eating. "I humbly receive with gratitude".

Kogarashi - is the cold wind that lets us know of the arrival of winter.

Yuugen - is an awareness of the universe that triggers emotional responses that are too mysterious and deep for words.

Shoganai - The literal meaning of "Shoganai" is “it cannot be helped." However, it is not discouraging or despairing. It means to accept that something was out of your control. It encourages people to realize that it wasn't their fault and to move on with no regret. "It is what it is".

Hanafubuki - "flower petal storm" is usually used to describe how cherry blossom petals float down en-masse, like snowflakes in a blizzard. I certainly wouldn’t mind being caught in this storm.

Tsundoku - Booklovers are all too familiar with the truth behind the Japanese word tsundoku. In English, this untranslatable Japanese word describes the act of piling up books that you never get around to reading.

Natsukashii - While the Japanese word ‘natsukashii’ does have an English equivalent in the word ‘nostalgia,’ the use and meaning of the word are quite different. Natsukashii is used quite often in everyday language in Japan. When used, Japanese people are not saying “nostalgia”; they are expressing a feeling that warms the heart because it brings back memories.

Kouyou - Like Hanafubuki is used in Cherry Blossom season, Kouyou is used as Autumn arrives. Kouyou is a way to say, “The leaves are changing colour, so Autumn is near.”

Komorebi - In a single untranslatable Japanese word, ‘Komorebi’ illustrates a beautiful forest with sunlight peeking through the leaves of the trees. What English word could compare? "Light filtering through leaves".

Kawaakari - Just like many untranslatable Japanese words, kawaakari conjures an entire landscape in the mind’s eye. This word refers to light reflected off a river at night or dusk.

Kyouka suigetsu - is a Japanese phrase that can’t be easily translated into English. It refers to something that is visible but can’t be touched, like the moon’s reflection on the water. Or, an emotion that can’t be described in words.

Tsukimi - Japanese festivals often revolve around nature. Tsukimi is the act of viewing the moon, which is often enjoyed en-masse during moon-viewing festivals in September or October.

Mottainai - Having a hard time parting with clothes you never wear or throwing out expired condiments? ‘Mottainai’ is a colloquial term used when confronting the feeling of regret that comes with wastefulness. ‘Mottainai’ doesn’t only refer to items that you toss in the bin, but also perfectly good things that are left unused or sitting in storage. The term can also be used to describe a waste of talents or missed opportunities

Irusu - 'Irusu’, a word combining the Japanese terms for ‘here’ and' ignore’, is used to describe a situation where you’re home but don’t feel like answering the doorbell. If you have a sneaking suspicion that the person at your door is there to sell you another subscription plan you don’t need, you might feel tempted to just ‘irusu’.

Let's start with the 1st of 4 major factions:

The Stellar Commonwealth

The Stellar Commonwealth is a union of 4 gorvenments: the Republic of United Nations (R.U.N), Solar Roman Empire (S.R.E), Holy Mortal Kingdom (H.M.K) and the United Republics of Kilenios(U.R.K), we'll talk about them later.

The Stellar Commonwealth was formed by the Solar Emperor Maximus and was built upon a core belief: Synthesism.

Synthesism states that every single belief has it's opposite, the anti-belief and by combining the "good ideas" of both would result in the true one, the only that works not only for mankind but for every single sentient species in the Milky Way galaxy and beyond.

The Commonwealth is capitalist, it is socialist, it is democratic and also authoritarian. It is everything and is damn proud of it.

Now let's talk about the members of the Commonwealth.

Humanity is split into two: those who consider themselves to be part of colonies or of the renmants of 21st century Earthling nations and those who consider themselves to be the sucessors of ancient empires. The R.U.N is for the former and the S.R.E is for the latter.

R.U.N fights for Mankind's greatest creation: Democracy. Their objective is to spread such gift across the stars using the Commonwealth’s military might and diplomacy, sometimes. Their soldiers wear various types of camouflage and their vehicles and guns are inspired by those from the 1980's to the 2000's but with futuristic elements added such as holographic sights, wrist-mounted computers and railguns.

While the S.R.E has "Roman" in its name, it isn’t entirely Roman, they have Persians, Byzantines, Greeks and even Samurais figthing for Earth, the Dux and for their civilized, alien friends. The S.R.E believes that everyone should follow the "True Belief" and is willing to use force to do so. Their soldiers wear ancient armor and mettalic masks with glowing visors, the armor was also upgraded to feature mordern stuff like life support systems, ammo pouches, radios and etc. While they use the same vehicles as the R.U.N they add a bunch of golden ornaments, shields and banners to them. Also they like melee.

Then comes Humanity's greatest ally: The Civiti, an alien species who resemble an anthropomorphic version of several species of Earth's insects. They blindly follow the H.M.K's current monarch as their gods have been long gone, stuck or dead in their homeworld's, Mortalis, core. Sacrificing themselves to stop the advance of an unstoppable parasite called the Seed. They are partly inspired by some aspects from Hollow Knight. Basically, they are a bunch of alien bugs in Renaissance-like armor using the magical tears of their missing gods to power their technology, on an eternal crusade agaisnt the parasite that ruined their homes and the ones who awakened it: themselves (More on that later)

Then we have Humanity second best (and unwillingly) ally: the Khileni. An alien species native to the radioactive world of Kilenios. They are anthropomorphic and resemble Earth's mammals, primarily wolves, foxes and red pandas. Sadly though, they are always wearing a gas mask alongside hazmat suits or military uniforms. Their homeworld is a gigantic wasteland covered in the ruins of old battles and forts-turned-to-cities. They have been conquered by the Commonwealth a long time ago and has been loyal to it since then, although it is mostly because they need the Commonwealth to survive the other, bigger, threats on the Milky Way. They have a dieselpunk aesthetic and their uniforms are inspired by Earth's armies from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century (1850's to 1950's). And the only reason they exist is because i thought that furry stuff needed a little more edgyness.

The R.U.N and the Khileni are for the "average joe", their soldiers aren't that strong and rely on their gear and weapons to do the job, but whereas the R.U.N uses special forces and combined arms assault to win their wars, the Khileni like to dig trenches and charge at a bunch of active bunkers.

The H.M.K and S.R.E are for the "Cool guys", they look cool, they prefer melee and are EXTREMELLY zealous, fighting for their rulers and their species. Whereas the S.R.E combines mordern weapons and tactics with old ones, the H.M.K combines magic with technology.
