In "Perp Walk", what do you think Bruce means when he says Joker "made him better"?
I have a few answers to this, starting with how the comic places the dialogue over visuals that, despite the lack of Red Hood, appear to recount Joker's fall into the vat.
[Batman: the Brave and the Bold #13]
Bruce had been Batman for some time before that night. I believe it's usually a year or so? But anyway, he says that he started out thinking of himself as a symbol of fear and justice, and note that "justice" is positioned over the fall into the vat. Initially this feels like it indicates the fall is a deserved consequence, but then the next panel with Bruce pulling Joker out, says, "Joker changed all that." As in Joker made him rethink his approach of focusing on fear and justice, which puts a different light on the "justice" panel, implying that it was anything but. Joker was only fleeing from a robbery that night, after all.
As the page goes on, the panels focus the pain and horror of Joker's transformation and Bruce's reaction to it. Bruce's face first looks determined, then shifts to wide-eyed surprise, and then appears understandably disturbed by the acid eating away at Joker's face. And over this, Bruce says that Joker changed him. Certainly over the years Joker pushed Bruce to confront greater threats than he ever imagined, but with this imagery, I also take this remark to mean that Bruce had to rethink being a force only of fear and justice. Even if Joker refused to be a beneficiary of any compassion Batman offered, Bruce saw firsthand how reacting to crime only with intimidation and violence compounded the problem he was trying to address.
We can also zoom out to the meta perspective. Joker has been Bruce's primary nemesis since 1940, and a hero is only as impressive as the challenges they overcome. The Clown Prince of Crime's schemes escalate higher and higher as time goes on, and Bruce continues to deliver defeat after defeat. It's this perseverence as a nonpowered hero that's made Batman a figure of hope to so many people, and of course contributed his indelible mark on pop culture. (And yes I still say this as someone who constantly talks about how insane he is.)
Joker making Batman better has been mentioned in comics before this, of course. A recent example is Snyder's Death of the Family storyline, in which Joker insists to Batman that his human connections make him soft, and that he was a better Batman when he was a loner.
[Batman (2011) #13]
You know how you help your pal and get back to how things used to be by trying to convince him to kill his own family.
Obviously Bruce does not do that, and he protests that his family makes him better. And yet throughout this whole ordeal, Bruce has to rise above and use all his skills to stop Joker like always.
Joker pushing Batman happens again not too many years after that in Tynion's Joker War. Through elaborate machinations, Joker takes away Bruce's fortune, his main resource in fighting, incapacitates him, and unleashes anarchy, like ya do. In their final confrontation, Joker gives this speech about his reasoning:
[Batman (2016) #100]
All this talk about how Bruce doesn't even understand the city, and yet Joker's endgame here is to force Batman to start over from nothing. He expects Bruce to get back up again, to work at correcting his mistakes.
Of course, Joker ends up defeated. But in the next issue, Bruce says that in some ways, Joker was correct:
[Batman (2016) #101]
And Bruce does make some changes, such as moving from the manor to the brownstone in the city to live among the people he protects.
Now, considering the context, one may return to Bruce's appreciation in "Perp Walk" and think, "Hey, Bruce, you remember Joker killed people, right?" Yes! Welcome to batjokes.

Page 3 of 6. You can read the rest here.
This was the emotional page of the whole thing since its the lowest point of despair the Inkling girl hits, I put a whole lot of effort in making her as sad as I could while also making Peach the most welcoming that I could muster.
The usage of colors was very important for this page, methinks. For one: I can and have drawn things with both colored outlines and even without outlines and all (I mostly do the later for backgrounds, since I find that having the black outlines help the characters stand out in front of them no matter how much detail I put into the background), but for the whole comic I deliberatedly chose to make the outlining process to be entirely black. This is because I wanted the panels featuring peach's warm smile feature the colored outlines to make her even warmer than usual.
The trick of coloring also extended to the backgrounds. If you notice at her lowest point the backgrounds are dark and they become more and more lighter the closer it is to revealing Peach into the story, at which point it uses bright and warm coloring. The usage of blues did help set a feeling of relief at the tail end too.
I didn't initially plan on having the zapfish inside of the light bulb, it was just a thing that came to me when I was coloring the panel.
The implication of the cellphone is that Orange saw her profile through the SplatNet app on NSO, as a nod to how this whole comic was inspired to begin with. I did faithfully recreate the app as much as I could (its not editted, its redrawn) but there's slight differences: for one you wouldn't be able to see her rank (it shows as a badge on the name plate, so it would be too small) and I didn't bother adding the weapon stats or the game mode shown on anarchy battles to leave it ambiguous (normally you'd see the type of battle, such as splat zones or clam blitz).
One thing I wanted to do with the comic was to challenge myself to see if I could tell the tale with as little text as possible (I limited myself to UI jokes), so I hope that Orange yelling "101" does get across that she wants lessons on the charger. That was the hardest thing to convey.
If you're curious about the arrows around Peach when she gets glomped on the 101 panel, that's the marker the inklings leave to the point they're super jumping to.
I honestly love drawing in the Paper Mario style, even though I normally don't get much a chance to. So calling peach a saint through the depiction of the Overthere was fun to do.
Also, she's got Parakoopa wings on.

Lost in Space 26
Hello, Isolans! We have conducted an activity check for the month of November!
If your character isn’t on this list, make sure to check this page to see how many stars that character has earned this month! Stars can be used for purchases at the marketplace.
The blogs that were removed from the Isola Radiale masterlist are under the cut. Note that both blogs with broken links and deactivated accounts will be included both at the top of this list and in their proper categories.
If you were removed in error, please simply send a re-application message. Several different people work on the activity checks, so it’s possible there are mistakes! If this happens to you, you will be able to keep everything you previously had, you just may be placed in a different residence.
Our general activity rules regarding checks are as follows:
Make at least three in-character posts during a calendar month (for instance, if the activity check is for January, have three in-character posts between the 1st and 31st of January).
Only one drabble and/or meme response of 300+ words counts as activity.
One-liners or minis not tagged #isola mini also do not count.
Please Note: If you are removed during two consecutive activity checks, you will not be allowed to re-apply as that character for two calendar months.
Additionally, anyone removed during the activity check will have a 12-hour window from the time of posting to re-claim their character. Any character not reclaimed during that period will be open to the community at large.
Please send in your reapplications from the account of the character that was removed.

For The Past 5 Years, My Hero Academia Has Changed Superhero Stories
*spoilers detected in the area*
The past thirty years of Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking have given us multiple lessons on the ins and outs of superhero stories. Someone's origin will be revealed, somebody will try to take over the world or blow up a city, and we'll all learn a valuable lesson in the end ... and then came My Hero Academia.
All of these tropes do show up in My Hero, but there's just so much more. The series has woven an intricate, incredibly detailed infrastructure that just so happens to be filled with superheroes and villains. And with that very specific change, the series has forever altered how superhero stories are told.
Quirks Are The New Normal
Hey, wouldn't it be great to have superpowers? How cool and unique and special would that be? In the My Hero universe, it actually wouldn't be special. Like at all. Because the vast majority of everyone on Earth has a power of some sort. Sure, there are some standouts, but the true quirk in this world is not having a quirk at all. When the world has become oversaturated with a thing, the absence of that thing becomes unique. Thus, the heroes aren't celebrated simply for having powers, but for how they choose to use them, going back to that old adage that it's what's inside that counts.
My Hero Academia doesn't expect us to be especially wowed by people flying around or shooting lasers. All of that has been a staple in American comics and manga for decades now. Instead, by showing us the heroes in training, it gives us a step-by-step portrayal of what it's like to have superpowers as a normal part of your life. It shows us the lengths that characters will go to stand out when 90% of their classroom can shoot something from their hands.
Heroes Are Integrated Into Society
We like to ponder on how the government would actually react to flying men with capes and big green smashing monsters. Would schools start teaching Hero-ing 101? Would superheroes become the new form of celebrity? According to My Hero, yes and yes. Heroes are the new Olympic medalists vying for their picture on a Wheaties box. Their skills have become so accepted as to have earned them an actual income. Have we heard of a single mega-popular actor or pop singer in this series? They've all been replaced by heroes-for-hire who sell their skills to those in danger and their likeness to those with a lucrative film deal.
Flips The Script On Orphaned Children
Quick, think of a fictional character who starts out as an orphan, discovers strange and amazing powers, and goes on to save the world! Woah, woah, that's enough. We could do this all day. Many superhero origin stories feature parentless, bullied children who go on to become some of the most powerful people in the world. But Izuku Midoriya has parents, both of them! His dad isn't around a lot, but he is very much alive and well and providing for his family while working overseas, or so the legend goes. This gives Midoriya's mom lots of time to stay home and take care of her baby boy like the amazing, best-ever mother she is.
When we are introduced to Kota -- an orphan whose parents died while superhero-ing -- he absolutely hates and resents heroes. He doesn't understand their purpose or celebrity or why his parents had to die because of what they did for a living. In fact, in this case, it's Kota who is the bully, taking his frustrations out on Deku. Despite the fact that all of this very much turns these tropes on their heads, none of it feels forced. It's just a well-written way to explore a different side of the super coin.
The Stakes Are Very, Very High (And Different)
Death and the destruction of the entire planet are definitely high stakes ... but they've never really been a facet of My Hero Academia. Instead, we see heroes who suffer very, very longterm consequences from their daily fights (think Izuku's hands, Aizawa's face/eyes, and All Might's general decline) and villains who put an entire social structure at risk. An economy, a belief system, a way of living, are in danger of collapsing thanks to the anarchy left in Stain's wake.
We see characters beginning to wonder if maybe the heroes don't deserve the acclaim they receive, if maybe they are just after fame and money. Even if this were to be true, the changes wrought would leave a lot of businesses scrambling to restructure their entire mode of operations. Without endorsements to live off of, heroes and/or officers may need to charge more for a simple rescue mission just to survive. And thanks to the League of Villains, an entire academic framework is already very close to being shut down.
With threats like these, the presumably inevitable death of All Might almost seems to pale in comparison. (Almost.) But we'll have to see if any of it comes to fruition, which means that we need to keep watching My Hero Academia on Crunchyroll.
What superhero tropes have you noticed are missing from the series? Let us know in the comments!

I hope you'll forgive me for intruding into this conversation, but I would like to add a few extra points, if you'll allow me.
As far as great councils/kingsmoots are concerned, historically-speaking, it's not unheard of for mostly-hereditary monarchies to resort on occasion to elective bodies when it comes to succession for the throne, eg. the Witan in Anglo-Saxon Britain. (Medieval historians feel free to butt in) Despite the decisions of said elective bodies definitely constituting a common law precedent, I would like to point out that, once it is decided to call such a council, all bets are off in regards to the election. Candidates present their own case and the electors vote for whomever they wish - laws and precedents and claims may, of course, be taken into account, but mostly people would vote for their preferred candidate. This isn't a court of law where people necessarily decide who has the best claim, more so who they would personally like to see on the throne, in accordance to their own interests.
Gyldayn definitely views the decision of the Great Council of 101 as "an iron precedent", but that's his interpretation. He's a historian with his own biases, writing about the fact more than a century and a half after the events, based on shoddy sources. How does he know about "in the eyes of many"? Did he time-travel so as to carry out an opinion poll? Others have gone at length to dissect Gyldayn's biases in other parts of Fire & Blood, so all I'm trying to say is to take his own opinions with a grain of salt.
We all know that, if they have any wiggle room, good lawyers can argue opposite outcomes based on the same text of law or precedent. So, in that regard, one could simply argue that the Great Council of 101 simply decided to pick Viserys over Rhaenys because he was "more suited to the role", not that female claimants will forever be excluded from the position of reigning monarch from now on.
When it comes to Rhaenyra, however, I agree that she was named heir at a moment in time when she had no living brothers and it happened in accordance to Andal Law, as well: a daughter comes before an uncle. It is very likely that, had a Great Council been called, Rhaenyra would have been voted for at Daemon's expense, since it is said his reputation was reviled. However, the lords of the land (not just Otto, even the Lord of Casterly Rock) fully expected Viserys to accept and acknowledge Aegon as heir as soon as he was born and lived past infancy. However, he did not and many were quite surprised/confused by this. This is where the succession "debate" begins. How is Rhaenyra still the heir with a living, breathing brother?
This is what many fans on both sides do not want to accept or acknowledge and something the show did indeed made a very poor presentation of. The truth is that in 12th Century terms (Anarchy time), Rhaenyra's claim is quasi-non-existent. The show/books had to work overtime to pump up her legitimacy as heir, since in reality it is comically weak. Even going at great lengths to make the greens doubt themselves over this. This is complete fiction and the conversation would never have happened that way in real life. But it's very convenient to hate on Otto for pushing Aegon as heir, since he's the face of the patriarchy pimping out his daughter and plotting Rhaenyra's murder.
Again, this time, had a Great Council been convened, many lords would have voted in favour of Aegon. Conversely, if Rhaenyra had no living brothers, she would have been accepted as Queen - and this precedent would have completely counteracted the 101 one.
Another aspect I would like to add is that - while Westeros had only been united for the first time under Aegon the Conqueror - the constitutive kingdoms must have already had their own rules on establishing succession, that may or may not have been similar. Consequently, they would be much inclined to apply the same kind of logic that had informed succession in their own home kingdoms.
And, lastly, I do agree re: Jaehaera. GRRM needed/wanted Aegon III to become King no matter what, so he worked his way backwards to fit his ending. I SUSPECT this is the reason he chose to make Jaehaera "simple". The succession was further muddied by this, but it's the reason why she couldn't, in practicality, become Queen Regnant, on account of her disability. So, it wasn't so much of an "usurpation" as it was that George simply needed a reason why the greens wouldn't follow Andal Law. I personally don't think this was the best choice; it would have been much simpler not to include Jaehaera as a character at all, instead of giving her a disability and then promptly killing her off, only to replace her with Westeros' Hottest Six-Year-Old.
In this instance, he kind of wanted to have his cake after eating it: he wanted to fit in his perfect War of the Roses ending (because it's always a cool ending to settle on and it ties the loose ends neatly), only to disregard it later (for reasons known only to him, lol).
Nevertheless, sorry for hijacking!!! I have this bad habit! 😭
I think, if people are going to comment on how Rhaenyra was usurped, they should no about law or have common sense. Rhaenyra was made heir when it was only her and Daemon but when Aegon was born HE was the one in the throne. As unfair as it is, brothers go before sisters.
Just like Viserys shouldn't have inherited the iron throne. Rhaenys was the child of the oldest son so she should have inherited the throne, not Viserys.
i think the show screwed up in not pointing out that it wasn't necessarily Rhaenys that the Council was deciding on, it was moreso Laenor, and that he should inherit because he was the son of Jahaerys's eldest son, who had been Jahaerys's longtime heir. So the Council wasn't just saying that women couldn't inherit, but that men couldn't inherit through the female line either, which really should have put the kibosh on Rhaenyra or her sons inheriting the throne.
I'm willing to give the Great Council some leeway that I'm not willing to extend to later generations, because the whole point of that was that nobody was really sure what protocol was given how messy the Targaryen succession had been at that point and things were starting to amass to violence (Corlys was gathering a fleet to defend Laenor's claim and Daemon was gathering himself an army), so that's why Jahaerys decided to try a more democratic approach, and it was a majority of people who decided the outcome. There's issues with the fact that it's landowning highborn men who comprised the vote, but it is profoundly more democratic than just straight up birthright monarchy, and Viserys, and more importantly the precedent that selecting Viserys meant, is what they ultimately chose. It was a bad choice because of nearly everything about Viserys, and that Rhaenys likely was better suited, but as an American, I can very firmly state that sometimes democracy gives us decisions that we don't like but we have to deal with anyway (#StillWithHer).
The issue is that nothing was done afterwards to rectify that situation. The law wasn't made any clearer (precedent isn't set in stone law but it's still pretty powerful) and more importantly Viserys didn't do jack shit when he himself was on the throne. Like yeah he named Rhaenyra as his heir when he was widowed and had literally only her as an option as opposed to his psycho brother. But once he had multiple sons, the expectation and the precedent of the Great Council meant that everyone in the entire country is going to see Aegon as de-facto heir. So Viserys should have either abided by that or he should have clarified the law and codified Rhaenyra's succession (and thereby codified absolute primogeniture, at least for the Targaryens, which might be why he never did it) to make it the crystal clear law of the land. Because if all you've got is precedent that goes against Rhaenyra and twenty decades passing since the loyalty oaths were sworn, most people are going to assume that legality is on Aegon's side, even if the legality is unclear.
It's unfair to call Aegon a usurper, because usurpation by definition relies on someone taking power illegally. We can debate whether it was ethically and morally right for Aegon to take the throne all the live long day (just not with me because I don't care, all birthright monarchy is a scam anyway), but whatever law there was remained on his side, and even then the law as it pertained to Targaryen succession was so muddied that there's no law that Aegon could have been breaking by taking the throne. Like yeah, it's a mess, but the Targaryen succession up until that point had been Aegon doing his thing and then passing the throne to his eldest son (straightforward, normal, God bless you Aegon I miss you) and then Maegor seizing the throne from his nephew because shrug.emoji I guess he was crazy, then Jahaerys kinda falling into it after the Iron Throne murked Maegor, and THEN we had the Great Council followed by all of this nonsense. And in all that time no one thought to hammer out the law? We're relying on the precedent of Aegon to Aenys and then the Great Council and only that? It's so insane to me, succession at that point was basically a free for all and stayed that way until Aegon ended up having Aegon the Younger as his heir and cementing the concept of "closest male descendant available is the heir no matter what".
(And no I don't see it as a usurpation of Jahaera because a) no law and b) Jahaera was not fit to be a reigning monarch any more than she was fit to be married if whatever intellectual disability she was hinted at having ended up making her seem half her age mentally, sucks but it is what it is).
#rhaenyra doesn't even have to die for aegon to become king#that's how weak her claim is#the entire show/books are pretending she has more of a case than she does#historically speaking this is hogwash#succession for the iron throne#i honestly wish more conversations would be like this instead of the very surface level 'aegon stole rhaenyra's throne'#the anarchy tm#dance of the dragons#jaehaera targaryen

Leftist Zines: The PDF Masterlist
Here’s a list of all the leftist zines I could find online that have free PDFs available. With these you can read them for yourself or you can print and share as many as you want. Hand them out at your school or put them in your local coffee shops. You can even host a table at zine events and give them out (maybe ask for donations for your printing and binding efforts). Maybe these will even give you some ideas on how to start your own political zine.
As far as the PDFs, there’s going to be a few options for some of them but they’re mostly just different layouts options or one’s in black and white and the other is full color. We also have this listed on our blog. Alright here we go:

15 best nostalgic movies and TV shows to watch immediately
CLOSE
Cable watching may still be more popular than streaming, but as Disney+ and others join the battle, will streaming remain the cheaper option? Just the FAQs, USA TODAY
The Disney Vault is, at long last, open.
With the debut of Disney+, the new streaming service from the Mouse House, many films and TV shows that have been out of public circulation for years are now available at the click of the mouse, delighting diehard Disney fans and nostalgic millennials alike.
The service is billed as a mix of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, “Star Wars” and National Geographic, and while the other brands are great, they weren’t locked away in a “vault” for years on end when you just wanted a VHS copy of “Beauty and the Beast” for Christmas. One of the biggest benefits of the service is access to Disney’s theatrical animated films, along with the campy collection of Disney Channel Original Movies, series and a few gems from the 20th Century Fox studio that Disney acquired this year.
More: Disney+ to Apple TV+ to Netflix: All the major streaming services, ranked
Disney+ includes more than 7,500 episodes of television and 500 movies, which might make choosing just one childhood classic difficult. But fear not, we’ve picked 15 films and shows that should be at the top of your queue, from everyone’s favorites to hidden gems you probably haven’t thought about since you were 12.

Animated treasures
‘Hercules’
Before you dive into the heavy hitters from Disney animation (and we have several on this list), take a moment to enjoy one of the most underrated films from the “Disney Renaissance” of the 1990s: “Hercules.” The powers and adventures of the Greek gods are brought to life in the film, which uses a gospel and jazz score and original music to bring it all back down to Earth. Definitely a hero, not a zero.
‘Aladdin’
Please, we beg you, ignore this year’s Will Smith remake of this story and stick to the one with a brilliant voice performance from Robin Williams. There are few times in animated films where the vocals and animation feed off each other in such wonderful ways, and it’s infinitely better than a guy covered in blue makeup.
‘The Little Mermaid’
While you’re forgetting “Aladdin,” forget ABC’s “live” version of “Mermaid,” too. The original 1989 film, in all its hand-drawn glory, is all you need to be “part of that world” (get it?). The music, by the legendary team of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, is among the best Disney’s ever produced, and it’s worth revisiting just to hear the songs in context again.
‘101 Dalmatians’
One of the movies that feels like it was sealed in the vault forever (in part because of Glenn Close’s later live-action films), “Dalmatians” is a veritable explosion of puppy love and good boys and girls. The film has a great villain and an even better villain song. If Cruella de Vil doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will.
‘The Aristocats’
“Dalmatians” is for dog people, and “Aristocats” covers cat people. One of the more under-the-radar Disney films, “Aristocats” is sleek and sweet with a great soundtrack. Released in 1970, it’s a little dated (though not as dated as other Disney films), but still full of cool cats.

Live-action films that aren’t remakes
‘Escape to Witch Mountain’ (1975)
No offense to Dwayne Johnson, but there’s no beating the original version of this paranormal tale about two mysterious orphan siblings with powers and a mad millionaire chasing after them. The retro special effects and action sequences just make the the whole film better.
‘Heavyweights’
Though not a Disney Channel original, this Ben Stiller comedy aired on the network so often in the 2000s you wouldn’t be remiss for thinking it was. The sometimes problematic story of young boys sent to a torturous fat camp run by a psychotic fitness instructor (Stiller) is a celebration of individuality and adolescence. That Stiller makes an incredibly hilarious bad guy is simply gravy.

Millennial DCOM Favorites
‘Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century’
There is, and never will be, a better Disney Channel Original Movie than this campy sci-fi classic, about a girl raised on a space station who faces a tough transition to life on Earth. The film portrays a version of the 21st century with a distinctly 1990s flair (all the cars are Volkswagen Beetles), its own catchphrase (Zeedus Lapidus!) and a boy-band tune that you won’t get out of your head anytime soon (“Supernova Girl”).
‘Smart House’
This 1999 movie beat “Black Mirror” in depicting technology as dangerous instead of empowering. Before we had Alexa or Siri, this Ryan Merriman DCOM asked, “what if Alexa could cook and had separation anxiety?” Come for the dance parties, stay for Katey Sagal (“Sons of Anarchy”) as the human embodiment of the Smart House.
‘Quints’
Millennial fans of Disney Channel may know Kimberly J. Brown better from the “Halloweentown” films, but “Quints” is just as worthy a use of her Disney charm. The movie follows 14-year-old Jamie (Brown), who hates being an only child until her mom gives birth to (you guessed it) quintuplets. Diaper humor is mixed with some surprisingly deep insights about forging an identity as a kid, and what you want and need from your parents.

The Fox lot
‘Miracle on 34th Street’ (1947)
The Christmas classic, from the vast and historical catalog that went to Disney after its 20th Century Fox deal, airs often on broadcast TV during the holiday season, but now you can queue it up whenever you want. As many new Christmas movies as we get each year, there’s really no replacement for a young Natalie Wood learning to believe in Santa Claus. Sorry, Hallmark.
‘X-Men: The Animated Series’
Almost a decade before Hugh Jackman stepped into Wolverine’s clawed shoes, the comic book mutants came to life for kids in this fabulous animated series. Part of Fox’s old Saturday morning cartoon lineup, the series told complex, deep stories of heroes and villains while we ate our cereal from 1992-96. Now you can binge all 76 episodes over overnight oats.
Cory (Ben Savage) and Shawn (Rider Strong) in “Boy Meets World.” (Photo: Disney)
Disney and ABC TV series
‘Boy Meets World’
Cory (Ben Savage), Topanga (Danielle Fishel) and Shawn (Rider Strong) are the kind of friends you can count on for a very long time. “Boy” seems as if it was made for the binge-watching era, considering the long-running series (1993-2000) covered the trio from junior high to college and marriage. One of the best shows about growing up, it now can help teach a new generation about the ins and outs of puberty and young adulthood.
‘DuckTales’ (2017)
A rare instance where the reboot outshines the original, this recent take on Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck (along with the evil Scrooge McDuck) is an absolute delight. Parents can enjoy watching with kids, in part because the voice cast includes so many talented actors, including Ben Schwartz, Danny Pudi, Bobby Moynihan and David Tennant.
‘So Weird’
“So Weird” is something of a kid-friendly take on “The X-Files,” in which a family (with “One Day at a Time” star Mackenzie Phillips as the mom) travels around the country and encounters supernatural occurrences. The series covers a wide variety of weird, including crop circles, mythic Sirens and curses. Today’s kids may have a little trouble identifying with the early internet website protagonist Fi (Cara DeLizia) uses chronicles her adventures, but it’s important to learn there was life before TikTok.

The Dark Knight has spoken, and he apparently can’t wait to get a look at the latest incarnation of his most iconic foe.
At this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, both Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and Christian Bale’s upcoming car racing biopic Ford v Ferrari were screened. Bale’s latest film…

MMOs I have played throughout the years
This is gonna be a long one, so I’m gonna put a read more to not eat a whole dash board. It’s gonna show my age a little ^^;
MUDs: I didn’t actually play these myself, but I vaguely remember my parents typing white letters onto the black screen. One of them let you add more description as you entered a room as you got higher level. I believe my mom had green light in the shapes of trees and my dad had cold wind and skulls.
Ultima Online: I made a blonde named Sarah, based on one of my classmates. She chopped wood, cooked food, and was told not to leave town. I got curious and followed my parents into the forest to watch their raid, and got attacked. I was very upset when they ate my corpse. I don’t think I played again.
Everquest: ah my first 3D MMO. I had a woodelf which meant my starting area was in the trees, where safety railings did not exist. You learned quickly to walk instead of run, or else you would have to wander around under the city to find your corpse to get your equipment back. Skeletons that were dead looked the same as when they were alive, so sometimes a pile of bones would jump up and start attacking you. I got as far as a keep that led to the desert, and boats that took a long time to get you places.
Anarchy Online: The rare SciFi MMO, but I unfortunately played during the beta. Starter quests could not complete and many other bugs prevented me from enjoying it. The idea of implants instead of armor was pretty freaking cool though. I heard it did pretty well once the bugs were ironed out.
Dark Age of Camelot: I technically played this, but all I remember is auto following in massive clumps where you couldn’t see your character (no collision detection lol) in order to fight at keeps. I think I mostly watched my parents play this one.
Rune Scape: How do I bury bones? TEACH ME YOUR DAMN GAME. Got bored in the first hour.
Adventure Quest: A browser/flash game that was pretty cool. I think I got decently far before I forgot about it. Animation was basic flash but the art was good.
Eve Online: I tried this recently and just.... it’s not fun. I was trying to do the basic missions and figure out what skills I should train eventually and like... I don’t like video game homework. And this is straight up a second job.
Horizons/Istaria: Vaguely recall requiring people to move around so that resources in an area could recover from depletion. Being able to play as a dragon is pretty cool. Looking it up, I’m surprised both that it is alive and that it changed game titles.
Maple Story: I played this with my brother and it was pretty fun. Many killing of slimes. Don’t even remember what class I played.
Star Wars Galaxies: All I remember is dancing in the Cantina, I don’t know if I did much else. My mom did not like the crafting system and the lack of ability to label same shaped storage crates.
Toontown Online: My brother played this far more than I did, but I had fun when I did play it. Don’t remember what the name of my yellow cat was. The revival (fanmade) server is doing pretty well, last I heard.
City of Heroes: <3 My favorite MMO, I was there when City of Villains was an UPCOMING release. Played both my main hero and main villain to approximately the same level. I would probably pay a good $40-60 to play with that character creator again, especially if powers were included. The villain became my default D&D character, and the hero became a wanderer in my never-finished Kingdom Hearts fan comic.
World of Warcraft: Probably the most amusing rogue I played, and actually got to feel useful in dungeons (assuming I remember correctly). The last quest I remember was titled “Snakes on the Plain”.
Club Penguin: Briefly wandered around, danced a bit.
Roblox: I vaguely remember being in a difficult to control fighting match with my brother. I think one of the people from the community is still on my Steam friends list?
Lord of the Rings Online: Very beautiful, but somehow failed to capture my interest. My sister had great fun fishing and wandering around the Shire.
Age of Conan: My mom knew whenever I got a critical because my cackle could be heard from across the room. Was very satisfying to playing the beginning 20 levels a few times, but never bothered leaving the first city.
Aion: Two races of winged flying people fighting against each other for holes in the sky. As a female you either were “good” (wore high heels) or “evil” (had clawed feet that JUST HAPPENDED to be like high heels). My mom theorized that everyone was actually only three inches tall, which is why we had leaves for umbrellas and could, ya know, fly.
Wizard 101: A simple but polished game, with a sense of incoming paywall surrounding it. Didn’t get very far, but it was a decent concept and execution.
Rift: Play as the magic jerks or the machine nerds, each blaming the other for causing the end of the world. I really enjoyed that rifts open up and everyone runs in together, fights a good fight, then go back to whatever they were doing. I still fire this up once in a great while.
Star Wars KOTR: Had a good story, just like the original single player games. It forgot to expand the walkable area, however, in it’s transition to MMO. You always rode an object to the next location, with no option to just hoof it and explore. With a strict Lightside/Darkside, sometimes you got lightside points for just.. being efficient. No Mr. Evil Science, putting different brains in the creatures is not helping our cause of domination you are just wasting money. I am going to report you so we can get a competent scientist instead. *lightside points granted*
TERA: I played this briefly with a housemate in college, but she and her boyfriend wouldn’t stop to read what the quests were saying. May have been more fun with different people.
Guild Wars 2: Currently trying to play this one again, haven’t played since it was first released so I have a lot to catch up on. I always enjoy their stories and active encouragement of exploration. Getting enough points to unlock the new toy (a glider) was a bit of a chore, but not enough to stop my enjoyment so far.
The Secret World: Started playing this with my group of friends, definitely enjoyed the atmosphere and themes. Keep thinking I should play it again, but I never seem to get around to it.
Archeage: I locked onto this game in an obsessive way after college, since it was great at making me feel useful. I love fishing, jumping onto other ships to invade them, and building houses. Over time it has become more focused on gear comparing, since it is PvP only servers. Everyone took the politics of not killing each other (mostly discussed in voice chat) very seriously. I’ve never enjoyed the homework involved in PvP builds or top level gear, so I saved it to be the very last thing I tried. The random chance for upgrading gear, and massive decline in player population, really lowered my interest in logging in.
Elder Scrolls Online: This had a worse time than Star Wars KOTR transitioning into an MMO. While the world is technically more open, it still follows the MMO logic of “things that direction will kill you until level XX”. The main thing that hurt it, for me, was that I was playing with my boyfriend. If you are on the same quest with someone and go ahead a step, or make a different choice, you can no longer help them fight because the monsters DO NOT EXIST on your screen.
Revelation Online: Tried to make my usual sexy thief (City of Villains character) and was thrown off by how GIRLY the female Blademaster is. I’m talking cute swinging of arms, softly cheering up people, and RIDING A HORSE SIDE SADDLE. I want to be the strong independent woman stereotype, not the polite flower stereotype. In general, I was surprised that your height was restricted by your class but happy with overall character customization. My mom gave up on this one because it was even more pay to win than she expected.
