Sneak Peak

Some of you may remember a post on another account about a fanfic that never came to be: Kung Fu Hornets. That was me. And technically it is still in production, I had a hard time for a while and fell into some serious writer’s block. But I really do want to continue it, if you guys are interested in it?

Amy shook those idle musings from her head as she reached the cliff where the apricot tree stood, humming softly to herself as she glanced around. It was quiet and serene, the sounds of Seth and Sarah’s spar carried off by the soft breeze around the mountain. The apricot tree stood in all its glory, green leaves fluttering in the wind, the ripe orange fruits hanging from its branches. The tree was there, the cliff was there, the sun was where it should be up in the sky- and there was no sign of the fox she was looking for. She frowned a little bit, calling out his name just to be sure, “Brian? Are you out here?”

One side of the apricot tree rustled as she said his name, and in the next moment Brian popped into view, hanging upside down by his knees from one of the branches. He grinned when he saw her, dropping down from the tree to flip over onto his feet. “Hey, Amy! What's going on?”

“I think I should be the one asking you that.” Amy hummed in amusement, a knowing look on her face. “We were supposed to be traveling to the next village over today so you could spread out your search for a successor. Remember that?”

Brian winced at the reminder, a guilty look crossing his expression as he sighed. “I didn’t forget, I just…it didn’t feel right.” He shrugged almost helplessly, knowing his reasoning probably sounded like nothing more than a pitiful excuse.

He turned to walk back over to the trunk of the tree, reaching up as he did to pluck one of the apricots from the branch above him. He moved to sit down with his back against the tree, right next to where he’d propped up his staff while he’d been up in the branches. The golden marble material of the staff glittered in the sunlight, reflecting brightly off the yin and yang emblem that sat at the very top. For such a gorgeous and mystical staff, it sure was causing him a lot of trouble. He turned the apricot over in his hands, more so to have something to do with his hands than actually inspecting it, his gaze instead trailing over to the staff beside him. A troubled frown marred his features, trying to put together the words to say what he wanted to. Amy didn’t press him for answers, she was patient enough to wait for him to find the right words to say. Instead she walked over to the tree as well, sitting down beside Brian with her back against the smooth bark of the tree’s trunk. It was a peaceful, content silence, the warm breeze brushing past them, the warmth from the sun’s raze cascading through the leaves of the tree above them.

“I don’t really know how to describe it…it almost feels like I shouldn’t be searching for the right person, but waiting for them to find me. What's that expression- you can’t rush time? Or something like that?” Brian pulled a face as he tried to remember the exact turn of phrase, one of his sandy ears twitching in vague frustration. After a moment he gave up, sighing and turning to look at Amy with a somewhat lost expression, “Does that sound crazy? I know I’m supposed to be all wise now that I’ve got this staff, but I don’t feel any different than I did before…”

Amy took a moment to consider what he’d said, humming in a soft, thoughtful manner. She tipped her head back against the trunk of the tree, glancing up to the blue sky peeking through the green leaves. It was like a kaleidoscope above their heads, shifting and changing with every breeze that swept by. After a few moments of quiet thought she spoke up, her tone musing, “No, I don’t think it sounds crazy. You’re supposed to be more in tune with The Universe than any of us, so if that's what you’re feeling then I’d say you’re probably right. The right person probably will come to you, just like you came to us.”
