M!ik Mafia AU Chapter 16 Thoughts

There are a lot of things, events rather, to talk about in this chapter, but this specific panel intrigued me the most.

Who could be the person who paid Dali (sensei) to give that information to Alice?

WHY would that person want Alice to side with Babel?

Of course, that person is a woman, as seen in the panel.

Let's all go back to Chapter 12 where Iruma visited Raim (sensei) on a Cabaret to ask her about human trafficking. As Asmodeus walked out, Raim-san followed him.

When I first saw this, I just thought that maybe they met on a certain mission in the past. Or Alice has visited the cabaret before while being on undercover.

But have you ever thought that MAYBE they know each other because of Asmodeus Amuryllis? In the original manga, even in the anime, it was revealed that Raim-sensei is one of Amu-chan's best students. Since this is a canon parallel world (Osamu Nishi said that if demons didn't exist, this would be Iruma's life), it's highly possible that they also have this teacher-student relationship.

Now, jumping onto the next chapter, Chapter 13 showed us a flashback of Alice's childhood and how Amu-chan was also a member of the national police.

Unfortunately, due to certain circumstances, rumors said that Amu-chan collided with a criminal organization and died during the incident but no body was found.

Don't you think this sounds a bit familiar? Doesn't this parallel Asmodeus' current situation?

As soon as Asmodeus hesitated to fulfill his mission (kill Iruma), the National Police immediately acted, sending assassins to Asmodeus' apartment. In other words, they want him dead. For what? For not shooting Iruma straight in the heart? Isn't that a bit unreasonable to kill someone?

Following this, as per chapter 16, Dali-san said that the National Police was planning to burn the whole auction down.

He KNEW that Alice would come. It is stated in the chapter that the amount of gunpowder was enough to burn EVERYONE in the building, that includes Asmodeus.

What if the same tragedy happened to his mother, Asmodeus Amuryllis?

What if the rumors about Amu-chan colliding with criminals were made by the national police themselves? What if they were never criminals in the first place?

Considering that her body has not yet been found, what if all this time, she's alive, hidden by a certain organization?

Maybe Babel's? Maybe Delkira's? (considering that she's a thirteen crown)

With that, it would come down to my main theory of this chapter.

What if Amu-chan wanted Asmodeus out of the National Police and bring him into Babel instead? It's possible that she's the one who paid Dali-san for the safety of her son.

That's just a theory, though.

No no no, my fellow Amuto fan, you're not being creative enough. Ikuto is going to pull a Nikaidou and infiltrate Arcana Academy as a music teacher/assistant.

Good Lord can you just imagine how hilarious it would be for Amu and Ikuto to pretend like they don't know each other, and Amu has to refer to him as "Tsukiyomi-sensei" and Ikuto has to refer to her as "Hinamori-san" when they've always just used their first names with each other and never used honorifcs. They wouldn't last a fucking day before one of them (my money's on Amu) fucks up and lets a first name slip. Amu can't act to save her life and Ikuto would be milking it for all it's worth.

Or maybe Arcana Academy has a high school division after all - because technically Ikuto is supposed to be a third year in high school during this time... but he dropped out of high school and ran off to Europe.

Whichever scenario happens, someone (Erito or Niya, take your pick) is going to find out that they know each other.

Meanwhile Tadase is like:

He likes working together with Amu but when Ikuto's involved everything goes to hell, those two are too busy fucking flirting instead of focusing on the mission, Niya is trying to jump Tadase every 5 minutes, and every single dorm leader is a weirdo. Also the principal seems shady as hell.

Tadase is probably thinking "please Uncle, send one of the Jacks, I don't care which, I need help".

I’m rereading Shugo Chara (it’s been years and the nostalgia I feel is immense) and I’ve got to be honest…

I think Amu and Ikuto is the funniest ship in the whole world.

Like, they just like each other. They like spending time with each other. Amu is genuinely comfortable around him until he starts flirting, then she’s mostly just kind of exasperated. All of Ikuto’s interactions with her are based on cats. He brings her food (human can not hunt for themself) and he lays on her (human is the most comfortable pillow) and he teases her (human must be kept on their toes). Like, he’s just a big ol’ cat and I love it.

But also, the manga is fucking hilarious.

When Kukai is graduating and everyone’s saying goodbye and Tadase asks “When I’m in trouble, can I talk to this picture I have of you?” When they’re all talking about what happens around springtime and Ikuto casually says “Being in heat. Because we’re cats.” and Amu’s respons is “Can he say that in this manga?” And Sensei… “Why are you still teaching here?” “I do have credentials.”

Ikuto is the funniest character. He brings cookies because he broke Amu’s tart. He brings ice cream because Utau dropped Kukai’s ice cream (and maybe Amu’s? I’m unclear) ((how did he even know that that happened? Does he have a sixth sense, “Someone just ruined my human’s meal. I have to fix this immediately.”)) He always shows up with a bag of food and just drops it on Amu, then leaves. He came here for one reason and one reason only, and it was to drop off food, bye.

My favourite part of the manga is Nadeshiko/Nagihiko. I love Amu’s comment early on “Nadeshiko changes so fast!” I love Temari, who just repeats “my kimono will get dirty.” And when they’re crawling through the vent or whatever, and Temari is crawling while still covering her face with her sleeve and says “my kimono is getting dirty.” Hilarious. I love Temari so much.

I love that Nadeshiko is Amu’s best friend. They are besties. The extra where Nagihiko breaks out of his house to spend time with Amu? Perfection. Nagihiko holding Amu’s hand, and when she points it out to him, he just goes “Oh yeah. I forgot I’m different today.” I love Nagihiko, he’s the best. The whole explanation is totally wild and honestly baffling, but I love Nagihiko and his weird ass family all the same.

I liked the show a lot as a kid, and I liked the manga even more. I think Amu and Ikuto are adorable. I think it’s funny that the characters don’t act like any elementary school students I’ve ever met (including the ones who were in elementary school with me). I like that Kukai is everyone’s favourite, and he’s just so chipper. I like Tadase’s wish being to conquer the world, and everyone agreeing to help him with it because “It’s fun :)” I especially like that Amu is consistently and constantly judging the capes.

Maybe it’s nostalgia colouring my view. Maybe I’m biased because it made me laugh a couple times. Maybe I just like Ikuto and Amu being comedic foils to each other. Whatever it may be, I really enjoy the manga. Would I recommend it? Yes. Would I recommend it if you’re going to be pissed by the age gap? No.

(“The age gap is so problematic!” But have you considered that they are funny?)

Chikawa Week Day 1: Flower

I've spent a great deal of time thinking about what to do for Chikawa Week. I don't think my fanart is all that good and it takes me a chunk of time to make, and I can't write fanfics to save my life. Then it dawned on me that I don't have to do anything new at all. I just need to stick to my strengths. As it happens, I enjoy writing "essays". So for Chikawa Week, I will write one essay based on the prompt for the day!

The prompt for Day 1 is "Flower" and I couldn't think of anything better to get started. When you mention "Flower" when talking about "Kono Oto Tomare!", one cannot but think about the beautiful pink ranunculus Chika gifted to Satowa on the day of the Revitalization Concert.

In this essay, I would like to delve deeper into the symbolism and importance this flower has in Chika and Satowa's relationship.

For me, it all starts with Isaki, funnily enough. That week, Satowa had invited him to assist to the Revitalization Concert that would welcome her back into the Hozuki Clan. Chika, of course, was thrilled to go, but I'm afraid he was not aware of the etiquette involved in these kinds of events. Not too surprising, he is just a teenager, and it's not like he has ever had to go to an event where a certain dress code is needed. It's his first time, we have to cut him some slack!!

Thankfully, Isaki is there to help him out. We love an Aunt who knows her nephew has a big fat crush on the Hozuki Lady, and is willing to captain the Chikawa Ship for the day.

She first tells him he should dress adequately, and that under no circumstances should he present himself to her house empty-handed. Of course, Chika asks her what should he buy, then. And she suggests flowers. I find it endearing that Isaki is trying to educate Chika on chivalry, and in how a lady should be treated. Specially when you are someone important to her. And of course, she is being sneaky because we all know what a man gifting a woman his age (and not related to him) flowers means.

As awkward as Chika can be, he knows his Aunt speaks the truth, and he should trust her. That's why without more complaint, he stops by a flower shop before heading to the Hozuki Household.

At the flower shop, the Helmsman (or Helmswoman as it happens) of the Chikawa Ship for the day is waiting for him. The florist sees a doubtful teenager intensely looking at the flowers, and she understands she has an assignment to ace. And wow does she ace it.

I can only imagine that, in the beginning, Chika intended to buy flowers as a sort of "assignment". His aunt told him they were necessary and it was not like he was going to question that judgment, but he thought it was just a matter of picking whatever he first saw that looked okay, buying it, and going his merry way. And they are just flowers. They grow all over the place, how expensive can they be, right?

When he sees all the types of flowers and arrangements? Well, things just get complicated. Because what flowers should he buy then? Also, he is broke. Our helmswoman won't let that be an impediment, though. No, sir! She gently asks if he is searching for something, and Chika awkwardly replies "A bouquet". Worth noting, he stumbles over the word "bouquet", and it's so cute because you just know that's a word he hasn't used much, if at all, and he is already making an effort to get out of his comfort zone.

Now, the budget. As I said, Chika is broke. He is SO broke, he can't even buy a mini-bouquet. He has a measly 254 yens (equivalent to 1,70 USD) to his name.

This will never NOT be funny.

Chika's financial situation won't deter our Helmswoman. She will see this through!

She offers him the option of buying a single flower. One with his thoughts and emotions on it. And unknowingly, at that moment, she turns what was an "assignment", into so much more. Because Chika immediately relates it to "Treasuring each sound".

He understands that one single flower might just hold the power to tell Satowa what he thinks and feels on her Special Day. And is not something that he should think about superficially.

However, there is challenge in transmiting his thoughts and emotions with one single flower. Very similar to "Treasuring each sound". But also, different. He is not versed in the "Flower Language". He finds it easier to communicate with music than with words! Not to worry, our Helmswoman is there to stir him in the right direction.

She asks him "What sort of girl is she, this girl who isn't your girlfriend". That is not an easy question to answer. It demands honesty and vulnerability. If you really want to give her the perfect flower, you have to be transparent, you can't gloss over things or tell half truths. You only have one chance to get your message across.

For the first time, Chika puts into words how he sees her. She is powerful and strong, yet sometimes surprisingly weak. The store clerk is sort of confused by the contradiction, yet it makes perfect sense. And it is a testament to their relationship. When he first met her, she put up a front, acting strong, refusing to ask for help and struggling to open herself to him and the koto club. But behind that mask, was fear. Fear of being left behind, of her sound harming others. When the clerk asks "Which is it?", he replies "Mostly strong, definitely". To him, who has seen her face her fears, and come up the victor, she is more powerful and dazzling than when she was trying to act like she was strong. A woman who shines her brigthest when she performs. "When she performs, she is amazingly cool". And then he adds "Always very awkward".

That is what knowing someone really is like. They have so many colors and shades to them, that is so very difficult to make a uniform statement about who they are. They can be strong yet weak, cool yet awkward. Chika doesn't only like Satowa's brightest colors, he finds all of her shades and tones charming and worth noting. He also sneaks in her "Huge chest". He couldn't let us forget he is just a growing boy, with blood in his veins.

"Is she cute? Or beautiful?", asks our invested florist. Chika falls silent, ruminating over the question. But how could he possibly choose one? How could he simply pick one of her tones? Satowa is "Both", he replies quietly. And our Helmswoman understands in that moment that this flower is not only meant to be given to a performer, or some kind of unreachable idol, but to the girl this boy loves, wether he knows it or not. The girl he finds most charming, admirable, but also wishes to protect.

Gifting a ranunculus, in the language of flowers, means "I find you dazzingly charming". Then you add the meaning of the color. Pink signifies love, romance, and gentle feelings. I highly doubt she told him that, though. I imagine she simply prepared the most beautiful pink ranunculus she could find, and gave it to him with a smile, knowing she had found the perfect flower, for the girl who is perfect for that boy.

And we know Satowa received the feelings and emotions that Chika's gift carried. Because even if she received countless bouquetes that day, there was one single single flower that wasn't given to her out of obligation, one single flower that was given to her with honest feelings of happiness for her returning to her family... One single flower that was meant for her, given by a boy who loves every shade and color that makes her who she is.

And so, Satowa framed the flower and hung it in the lobby. Because before going out to face a new day, she will have the reminder that there is a boy who admires her and wants her to do well. And when she comes home, there will be comfort waiting for her.

Without knowing it, Chika gave her "home" within one flower.

i get your concerns OP but i think you're taking a lot of this at face value or by standards the mangaka didn't intend.

raim's "sexiness" scope is for attraction or cuteness in general, or that was the best translation.

by western standards this stuff might be seen as concerning, but this is a japanese manga by a japanese author; it's best not to think of the worst possible implications here

a common example would be nudity in children having gross/cp implications by the average viewer in the west, but in eastern media, nudity is often used to portray innocence

the babies have 3% sexiness isn't literal as in they're sexually attractive. the blushing part also kind of applies with the difference; in eastern animation and illustration it's often used to express joy or all types of love, it's not necessarily sexual. clara's sneak attack and hug touched her, she thought it was cute. it's not necessarily sexual

tl;dr: social cues and cultural differences in implication

same with amu-chan, she knows when to back off and has clear knowledge and wisdom on boundaries deeper into her character, and i don't see her actually overtly being inappropriate with iruma. maybe i'm biased but as an east asian, her behaviour would be seen as overbearing and silly but nobody would EVER think of it as sexual advances or even one sexual implication here

in the west, maybe or definitely. in the east, no. idk it's just pretty disheartening to assume some eastern typical social behaviours or artistic directions are how they would be perceived in the west, personally

also there literally is an established rule that teachers are not allowed to make advances on students (cue buer blushenko and stolas suzy ganging up on ipos ichou after thinking he might have made one on a student, which he didn't, but they were super serious about it)

i really don't agree or think that murmur sensei was trying to make advances on elizabetta or has a thing for her. elizabetta's magic IS psychological. it would make perfect sense for him to want to see how it works objectively.

considering murmur literally teaches psychiatry, it wouldn't make sense if he wanted to get entranced by her, because that would 1) go against his role in the exam and 2) as a teacher with standards and a code of conduct, he obviously can't let himself succumb to desires, which full love gauge would do.

i'm also pretty sure that a rank 7 demon like murmur would be immune to elizabetta's magic to begin with, due to knowledge and training and rank shit. all i saw in that panel was murmur wanting to see her power up close so he could analyse it; hell, me and my psychology permafixation would want to see how it works as well

And so, like my other birthday commemoration posts, I’ll be listing some of my favorite Takahiro Sakurai roles here. I made this post last year, and now I’ll be revamping it :)

Cloud Strife - Final Fantasy

Sakurai is my one true Cloud. His work as this seemingly cool mercenary with a difficult past is just *sob* so good?? Especially in Remake. Like. God!! This right here is OG Cloud. Cool, standoffish, sometimes coming off as a jerk, but he’s also very awkward, doesn’t know how to deal with people, and is just an overall sweetheart?? And Sakurai nails every single line. Just take my heart, damn you T-T

Kururugi Suzaku - Code Geass

I will forever love this man. Even after all these years, my heart still hurts for him. His broken voice at the end of both seasons (his confrontation with Lelouch in the cave, then the culmination of the Zero Requiem) will forever be ingrained in my mind. 

Arataka Reigen - Mob Psycho 100

How can you not love Reigen? XD He’s a dork, but an earnest dork, who does shady things on the side and have done some questionable things, but he cares a lot about Mob and is just the perfect mentor for him. I love him?? So much?? Tbh, I didn’t expect Sakurai to voice him, but when I finally heard him, I could not imagine any other seiyuu as his voice lmao. 

Oshino Meme - Monogatari Series

This eccentric dude who lives in an abandoned building and acts as a somewhat mentor/informant to Araragi is one of the best characters in the series and I am sad that we don’t see much of him after Bakemonogatari. I miss the series. I need to continue it. 

Hayashida Takashi - 3-gatsu no Lion

Is this soft Sakurai? Somewhat soft I would say? One of his softer roles, at least. I haven’t read the manga, but the anime was amazing and though Hayashida-sensei is only a supporting role who didn’t get enough screen time, I love how he just supports Rei on the side without asking for anything. This is one admirable teacher 

Shimogamo Yasaburo - Uchouten Kazoku

Now this is soft Sakurai :3 A cute anime about the life of a tanuki family living in Kyoto. Based on a novel by the same person who wrote Tatami Galaxy. Of course it’d be good.

Matsuyuki Atsumu - AnoHana

Yukiatsu is...annoying ^^; He is obnoxious and some of his behavior triggered me. But, AnoHana is still Nagai Tatsuyuki’s best work in my opinion, and this is one of the first Sakurai role I encountered, so yeah, it’s got that nostalgic point. I didn’t like the guy, but I still liked Sakurai’s performance

Mitaka Jin - Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo

Sakurai’s soft ikemen voice gives me heart attacks (and now you know why Sakurai is the best version of Cloud imo because aside from the range of emotions he displays there, there’s that soft and sweet voice every time he speaks to Tifa so :3 ofc there’s also the fact that he’s also a Tifa fanboy). Not to mention that this is another masterpiece anime with a cast of characters that I love wholeheartedly. A coming-of-age slice-of-life story about high school kids trying to achieve their dreams. Between people with talent and people who works hard. Struggling against all odds. Wondering if he have what it takes. Wondering if maybe he should pursue something else. I remember relating to Jin when I first watched this - maybe because he wrote the script to Misaki’s animations. Yep, I love this anime. 

Majime Mitsuya - Fune wo Amu

This awkward, taciturn, yet endearing fellow with a love for words. You can’t help but love him. Need I reiterate? Sakurai is *chef’s kiss*

Souma Ayame - Fruits Basket

One would wonder how Sakurai would voice this loud, gaudy, obnoxious character that couldn’t stop you from laughing. Rest assured, the first time Ayame spoke, I laughed XD I love him

Making my work a little bit better. I ate jambalaya for the first time, but I ended up not being able to figure out what kind of cuisine it was.

I listen to all kinds of TV and radio, but by the end it becomes silent. The food in the neighbourhood izakaya was really delicious.

I have all kinds of anecdotes since my family moved around a lot. I felt lonely in kindergartens outside the country as I couldn’t understand the language.

I spent about a year and a half in Taiwan. I think it was because it was during kindergarten that the language barrier was so difficult for me to overcome.

What place/region would you like to live in someday?

As a citizen of Fukuoka, I’d love to live somewhere in Meinohama. I’m happy that Volume 1 has finally been released.

Even though this is what I wrote, I didn’t realize it at the time. That I might not have felt it even once, the feeling of being happy that a volume was released.

Do you have a habit you try to do?

Sometimes I go for a walk. I finally bought Skyrim. I’m looking forward to seeing how it’s different from Oblivion.

I think I prefer Oblivion, since Skyrim only takes place on a snowy mountain.

Starting my graduate research 2 weeks before the submission deadline...I made it in time, but I still have dreams about it.

The best is to just eat normally. I went to see Kooza. I was so deeply moved that I teared up. It truly was the best.
