Geneva ‘74 50 years on: Michelotti Lem. The Laboratorio Elettrico Mobile has started as an idea by engineering journalist Gianni Rogliatti who proposed an electric car with wheels in a rhomboidal layout. Michelotti built the prototype using bonded aluminium with the centrally placed rear wheel driven by 48 Volt batteries. It was displayed 50 years ago at the 44th Geneva Motor Show

Renault Project 900 Series II, 1959. The same team that produced the first 900 prototype also made a second car. The main difference between the two was that the V8 engine in the green car was moved further forward and in front on the rear wheels to create a mid-engine layout to improve the car's handling. Both 900 prototypes used aluminium bodywork to reduce weight. Project 900 was abandoned, not just because of doubts over whether the market would accept such a radical concept for a flagship model but also on cost grounds. Because of a deal with AMC, their flagship Frégate saloon was replaced in Renault's showrooms by the Rambler Classic Six, assembled in Belgium (early examples were US imports) from CKD kits and badged as the Rambler Renault. It wasn't until 1975 that Renault would again make their own executive class car with the V6 engined 30TS.
