i just completed Hypnospace Outlaw

i sincerely love how much the sci-fi genre is just explaining how much sci-fi stuff would suck if it was real

the reason you play hypnospace outlaw is the aesthetic and presentation, just so were all on the same page. the reason this game got your attention is because its a passionate parody of web 1.0, and it does an excellent job of that. i can tell this game was made with a deep nostalgia for what made the past special without being blinded from its flaws (like the viruses and general difficulty to navigate).

the only problem is that im 24

well i shouldnt say thats a problem. just because i dont have nostalgia for what theyre throwing back to doesnt mean the game doesnt stand on its own. i didnt grow up with a ps1 or n64 but i still enjoy that specific form of lowpoly modeling, for example. its just unfortunate that i cant have the same hit of nostalgia that people slightly older than me can, yknow? i wish i could enjoy this game as much as them

again, the game was still very enjoyable. the puzzles start out very grounded, introducing you the the world and how it functions very effectively, before ramping it up with more abstract mechanics and compounding techniques needed to find more results. the only problem i found myself stuck on in an unfun way was figuring out how to decrypt sandwich files. its one of those puzzles that make you feel silly for not getting it earlier, but in my defence... who the hell would program something that esoteric

as an aside, i saw people discussing what genre games like this would be. by "games like this" i mean hypnospace outlaw, outer wilds, rain world, animal well, that kinda thing. i dont think applying one genre is effective, but instead its about how they combine the genres of exploration and puzzle. instead of having all the tools to solve a puzzle when youre presented with it, you have to leave and seek out the solution elsewhere. notably, if the game isnt build to accommodate/encourage this, itd be pretty unfun. these games and their open-ended design manage to skillfully mesh both genres together: the exploration is the puzzle

so yeah, i really enjoyed the game! there arent a lot of games where its just fun to explore the world as its presented, and HO does a fantastic job of that even without considering the puzzle design. i love just reading about the characters and their lives in hypnospace. this games greatest strength is just how charming it is, theres really nothing that matches it in that regard

i also found it really inspiring. i love how much personality all the characters fit into their webpages. maybe someday ill move this blog to neocities just so i can evoke something half as impact

i love colours have i ever mentioned how much i love colours. becausee i do. theres SO mang fucking ways to use tbem. to manipulate them. there’s ways to make pieces FULL of colour look flat and full because you chose colours that fuckin- cancelled each other out. did you know that green cancels out red and thats why theyve got those green little makeup sticks its awesome. one od the things i love doing with colours is thinking about like- the Vibes isnt quite the right word for it but i like thinking about what i want to stand out or what i want to remain sorta. flat. and standing out does Not mean the focal point to me sometimes it just means “what someone would talk about if asked abput this thing.” like the bogboyhalo piece?? i normally dont make things that has so many similar muted tones. but because it DOES have v similar tones it comes out v peaceful

values do SO much for the intensity of a piece like my guxning gosh. it really stands out that it isnt just colour contrast that matters in some of the jaiden ones ive done

like here ^ you got a mix of warm and cool colours. id say cool reds and warm blues/purples?? because of the way its muted and rhey interact w each other.i dont know. but its like a sliding scale along the colour wheel there of colours which are usually Not similar at all given cohesion /softness by muting and matching (and making sure that the colours that Arent muted are used minimally and at least match)

but then also youve got shit where theres a lot if similar colours but Intensity. there’s not a lot of colours here! mostly blue! but the selective contrast of the values makes it Stand Out more, PLUS the red does something fuckin- wild here. its almost like faux bouncing light? it helps attach the subject (blue) to the environment (dark reddish purple). its not a very intense value so the light blue still gets to be the Intense thing against the dark blue of the rest of him, but it still adds a little somrthing.

Fucking. its so wild too how as you play with art and look at art and experiment it becomes so instinctive. there’s a lot of factors that go into why i use x or y or z brightness or hue or size and its Always Changing because every environment demands something different !! you can tell so many different stories with the same things paired up differently its so so awesome

"Do Me This Way" Atlas Genius. Early/mid 2010s radio-friendly alt rock vibes. The nostalgia got me, ngl.

Bad Bunny's song about Hurricane Maria, "Una Velita," feels painfully relevant today with its call from humanity, not neglect from the government.

Baekyun released a new R&B-inspired project, Highlights for me are "Good Morning," "Rendez-Vous," and "Cold Heart" but the entire project is worth checking out if you love smoother, suaver Kpop.

"Clock Hands" Billyrrom. Some of the instrumentals would appeal to you if you like the Persona OSTs, though the singing is just more dreamy Jpop on top of that.

Chanyeol saw his bandmate releasing music and said me too!! My faves off his latest release are: "Black Out," "Hasta La Vista," and "Clover." I think his music is more conventional alt pop, reminds me almost of Post Malone's "Circles" era. Which I did enjoy, ngl.

"Vigilante" & "Closer to God" Fat Dog. I prefer the lead singles but these are great too. Chosic calls this music "crave wave," I call these tracks chaotic and alien. It fucks.

Ibibio Sound Machine came out with "Honey Bee," which is extremely slick and funky. It's a song that crawls up your spine and presses against it. If you want more check out their collab with Joe Goddard, "Progress." It's less funky, more Royksopp-y, but ISM's vocals shiiiine.

More and more dance music--Jamie XX released an album. I wasn't as hot on it as the critics but outside of the singles, "Wanna," "Waited all Night," Still Summer," and "Breather" are my highlights. Just some dreamy electronica that gets a bit conceptual and indulgent.

And back to Kpop... Loossemble released "TTYL" a bubbly, glitchy, and high energy track as well as "Confessions," which is just more straightforwardly part of the current Kpop sound.

Just discovered Luxx Noir London (I don't watch RPDR sorry) and "Light in the Dark" sounds so much like early Gaga meets Pussycat Dolls that I had to shout it out.

"Future Enemies" Yola. Kinda power-poppy. Is power pop a thing? If it is it probably doesn't match what I mean here, lol. Powerful, assertive but poppy and electronic with some bass going on.

Also, Buck Tick put out a live album but it makes me too upset to listen to it so... check it out but also :(

Gameplay: 5 stars - introduces simple but cool features, nothing extraordinary for my taste but serves what it does perfectly. Low res visuals: 4 stars - just fine, low res as i like it, doesnt crash your computer just watching a LP. loses a star bc its 3d obviously Aes/scenery: 5 stars+ - such creative and artistic sights. awe inspiring. just the DLC's world is incredible by itself but everything is different and unique Mood/vibes: 5 stars+++++ infinite - makes me cry just thinking about it. perfect perfect perfect cannot understate this Storytelling: 5 stars+ - the way the story is told tells just enough and leaves you to figure the rest out, exactly as everything should be. any other type of storytelling is garbage but thats my own subjective opinion Innovation: 5 stars - never seen a game like this. Symbolism: 5 stars+++++ infinite - watched a bunch of hours long analysis videos and learned something about the themes every single time. i still feel like it has more to tell too Worldbuilding: 5 stars+. so creative so creative so creative. sadly the storytelling style doesnt allow for more depth which is fine the way it is for this style. but i yearn to know more Music score: 5 stars+++++ infinite - sound design in general is perfect. idk what else to say its just amazing. not my fave music style though but perfect for what it does here and the associated emotions are gut wrenching. Bonus replayability rating: 0.5 stars - i want to wipe my memory to experience it again, over and over. considering not interacting with it for 10 years to try it again from the top. not likely as im hyperfixating on it currently.

Ken.shi Gameplay: 5 stars+++++ infinite - i never want any other style of gameplay in a game. Low res visuals: 3 stars - low res as i like it. unfortunately this isnt 2d. would have matched the aes so much better. the game is beautiful but could be more which is why this rating is low. Aes/scenery: 4 stars - would be 5 but so much space is empty. it serves the vibe of the game but its also overkill lets be honest Mood/vibes: 4 stars - great. could be better though. see above Storytelling: 5+ stars - i think it isnt infinite stars only bc ive known this game for years and became a bit jaded by it. otherwise my absolute fave style of storytelling. tell almost nothing and speculate. every art do this or die Innovation: 5 stars+ - comes up with so many cool ideas that it actually makes you feel like there are more than there are. anyway unprecedented, never been done before, etc etc etc. the gameplay, the concepts, etc etc. Symbolism: 4 stars - there are a lot of things to say about it. provided that you speculate correctly. could be more but fine the way it is. Worldbuilding: 5 stars+++++ infinite - perfect. Music score: 2.5 stars - its fine but loses at least one star bc part of it makes it annoying. not very diverse either. i usually just turn it off. otherwise great vibes for it. Bonus replayability rating: 4.5 stars - never tire of starting over, in fact its way more fun than the end game stage. play regularly Now lets do Dar.k Chr.o.nicle. Gameplay: 4 stars - cool features for a game like this. Low res visuals: 4 stars - its got that playstation/gamecube goodness Aes/scenery: 4.5 stars - some areas are so pretty Mood/vibes: 4 stars - makes me feel nostalgic and like the world is simple and good, which is kind of the point bc it has black and white retro rpg morality. Storytelling: 2.5 stars - its fine, very conventional for the genre. the time travelling mechanic is incredibly cheesy, best not to think about it too much. Innovation: 3.5 stars - introduces many features ive never seen in a rpg, but at its core stays very true to its genre. Symbolism: 1 stars - good will prevail no matter what and people are evil bc theyre hurt. doesnt really have any deeper themes. Worldbuilding: 2.5 stars. actually 1.5 stars only due to elves and moonfolk Music score: 5 stars - one of my fave instrumentals ever comes from this song and i just still listen to the OST regularly despite the fact that ive played this game as a child first and foremost. ive never forgotten its music Bonus replayability rating: 3 stars - 1 star due to nostalgia factor and another bc its nearly impossible to complete everything. i come back to this game about once every few years

I have a lot of thoughts about this. I love the jsr games music to death but its so very 2000s, as in that kinda music isnt really being made anymore and if it is its in a deliberate atempt to capture the nostalgia of it rather then just making stuff in the style... one of my biggest worries for jsr3 is how the soundtrack is gonna pan out, brc did a great job of keeping the vibes while doing something new, but The First JSR game in 20 Years has a certain standard its gonna be held to.

I think ultimately whats the most striking about the games music is the sense of community and simultaneous individuality that comes from being a young artist surrounded by other young artists who love music. The first games soundtrack is made up of people the sound team knew! I honestly feel the hyperpop (as much as ppl dislike the term) scene would be a pretty good match for the games cuz it kinda feels like the only space where youd see someone like folie grouped with underscores and william crooks. Talking about this is hard cuz nobody can agree were the boundaries even lie, if the "genre" includes alt country and dubstep and glossy bubblegum pop and modern classical collage it kinda just stops being a genre n thats perfect for an eclectic radio station adores by a bunch of weird defiant kids with pronouns. Idk, i also just think itd be cool if some of my friends were in a sega game. Whatever.

i do actually really really like Ray Chase as kara but the way that Nakamura pitches his voice down for him and then when something karamatsu isnt like. prepared for or whatever happens he goes back up into his regular vocal range or sometimes a bit higher really adds to karamatsu's whole. everything HJGKHFJGH LIKE his whole identity pretty much IS performance so even his voice being part of his front is so fun to me, Ray Chase's voice feels so naturally deep and smooth that its like. his voice is Too Cool for kara yknow like his voice being Actually cool? karamatsu fucking wishes JHKGJFGHD BUT i do think he is one of the better choices that the casting directors made compared to the rest of the brothers

Just realized i have a penchant for Kaeya fighting to-be Diluc’s suitors or partners to the most non-violent and aggressive things ever-- like dance battles, sports matches, who can make the best snowcones, etc.

Its probably because, despite how much Kaeya wants to keep him away from all that, he doesnt want any bad blood between all parties involved and just wishes for Diluc’s happiness

So he fights them in any way that isnt an actual physical fight or battle. Although id imagine if this was Chiluc, he'd get really close to just straight up punching Childe in the face AHAH

Oh Kaeya, Childe is a bit battlecrazed-- if you introduce him to fights that arent "fights", you have just created possibly the most dangerous skill monkey in all of Teyvat.

So the only one I think Kaeya would actually approve of is Thoma. cause he knows Thoma is a good guy. Like everyone else can screw off even Albedo. Cause you can't convince me, Kaeya fully trusts Albedo. You just can't. Like yeah, they bond over caring for Klee, but still, Albedo gives the vibes he has his own goal and will place them above all else. Also, Albedo and Diluc would never talk about their relationship, so Kaeya would hear about it until Klee spills the beans about them planning to get married or something.

And funny enough, Kaeya would start out liking Zhongli but quickly grow to LOATH him as he sees Diluc buy everything for him and ends up probably convinced that Zhongli is totally in it for Diluc's money. Probably ends up as the one Kaeya hates the most. Cause with the other, he can kind of see how well they treat Diluc and the effort they put in. It is much harder to see that with Zhongli.

Eula is not allowed cause she's obviously trying to use Diluc to clear her name.

Xiao is probably the one Kaeya grows to like the most and ends up slotted behind Thoma. Because I can see Kaeya noticing how Xiao is always so very careful with Diluc. And honestly won't talk about really anything until you talk about Diluc. So Yeah

ok hold on im here with my band thoughts about riptide the musical. full disclosure this may not make sense i tried to be coherent.

i think that in the dunjon the orchestra would get real spooky during this. I ALSO REALLY WOULD LIKE SOMETHING CHOIR GOING ON IN THE BACKGROUND. what im thinking is like op 32 - 7 neptune, the mystique by gustav holst. they have an all female choir that sings this really nice chord and adds a lot to the song. this would mainly play while gillion stands before the elders and i think it would be interesting to play with the idea of the key and melody instrument changing between trials. i ALSO think it would add to the whole "this isnt real. but you dont know that" idea if the song stayed the same. no matter the scene.

assigning characters certain instrument melodies like how they do how to train your dragon is SUCH a cool idea to me. i think gillions motif would be played by a french horn. not too sure on the notes but definitely something with those typical heroic tones. chips would be played by a bassoon. hear me out on this. i actually dont have any reasoning. its just vibes alone. jay tripped me up for a bit due to her more complex character, but i think she would be played by bell chimes

going back to arrangements matching certain scenes i can TOTALLY imagine the island of zero scenes with movement three of west highlands sojourn as it is primarily navy based. (this is totally a bias since i play this piece for my competition this year. but i just generally really like west highlands sojourn)

i think it would be SUPER cool to have band involvement on stage. im not sure if this goes across for all productions, but i once saw a high school production of Catch Me if you can in which the jazz band was directly on stage in certain scenes. in certain scenes like the casino arc, anytime they enter a tavern, or just a place where there's street performers. having just soloist or a small ensemble on stage would be SO incredible. i think it would be so cool if the whole band was up there during the noctis like fancy party all dressed up. god id go insane.

i think anytime theres a navy related topic/scene there'd be this BRASS HEAVY melody (id say led by low trombones) if you've ever listened to arabesque. its a little something like the saucy lick they have going in that. i also think that whenever marshall john shows up the brass thing still plays but it sounds like a circus march.

SPEAKING OF CIRCUS MARCHES. i think that the entire time they are in Kas' Karnival (or however you spell it) a different strain of a circus march plays. specifically here im thinking Grand Galop by Johnnie Vinson because it has such wiggle room for tempo that you can play around with the mood of the carnival. in the pixieland and other peaceful areas the trio (a clarinet and euphonium led part. very soft and silly. most of the band rests during this.) plays. in the big top extravaganza the final strain plays (thats basically a rebalanced version of the trio to include the full band) i think the break strain would play anytime things got stressful. the other two strains could be anywhere really as they are pretty general.

those are the thoughts ive had so far abt it but if i have anymore ill let u know ^_^

i was thinking like for jay it could be something like a violin or viola. like it’s usually a fancy and elegant instrument but it can go CRAZYY when you want it to <3 and in scenes like the block i imagine jayson would have a strong cello playing for him and jay’s violin would be echoing his notes… ough. wind chimes are a really good idea though it plays a lot into some of her wind imagery (THIS IS THERE I KNOW IT IS OK<3)

and !!!! brass instruments for the navy are so really actually they are very loud and strong and generally inspiring :3 also something like a french horn for gill’s theme???? mwah mwah in love

HAVJNG THE BAND ON STAGE SOUNDS SO COOL?????? in taverns and big islands it makes so much sense. i feel like it would tie the roots back to dnd a little and it would make the town feel more real!! i love it <3

i am soosooo in love with all of this <33 gillion’s theme would be very strong and powerful like you can feel it in your bones, but through out the musical it dies down. it’s not as loud and intimidating or out there.

jays theme would be very subtle. it would be as loud but it is definitely there. the song wouldn’t sound the same without it. OH MY GOD. her theme plays in the block when she walks to her fathers side but it doesn’t have her specific instrument and it just isn’t the same. then a few measures in it gets replaced with a big cello and her instrument echoes the cello <333

chips theme would be very sudden and sharp. like it’s always on the verge of growing into something HUGE but it never really does. like ouugh. <333 sorry i’m having so many thoughts. his theme would have a harmonica ive just decided <3333

HEARTSABYUL PICKING POKEMON STARTERS (and why)

im bored and so i bring together two of my favorite things. I’ll do every dorm eventually and each person will get their own pokemon (probably.)

ACE ~ he’s an oldie pokemon fan, loves the classics isnt as much of a fan of the newer gens and will rant about it on twt. the first thing i thought of for him was fire type bc he’s rather headstrong and blunt and has that sorta firey energy about him. with all of this said, Ace picks charmander. Sue him for loving the classics. He also absolutely loves the fact that charizard is a fire flying type bc it means they have matching magic (kinda, he just thinks it’s cute) but still wishes that charizard was a dragon type bc he thinks dragon types are cool. He prefers charizard y over x and deuce calls him weird for that. believes in charizard supremacy.

DEUCE ~ like ace, deuce is also an oldie pokemon fan and is proud but hes less outspoken about it (keeps a gameboy and ds hidden in his closet). my bf argued that deuce would be good with a fire type starter and while i can agree to an extent i still went with a water type so i didnt have any repeats and bc i personally think he’d pick a water type and he enjoys pokemon meta, especially in the early games. he’s probably into speedrunning and mods too WHICH IS WHY deuce picks squirtle as his starter. he thinks turtles are cool—and you know whats even cooler? a giant turtle with guns on its back. he and ace get into arguments about whether blastiose or charizard is better constantly with no end to them in sight. I also enjoy that adeuce both get matching gen 1 starters

RIDDLE ~ now riddle, unlike the other two, hasn’t got much if any pokemon experience or knowledge save for… maybe a few pokemon cards that chenya gave him when they were kids and he hid away somewhere safe, but he doesnt know much about pokemon at all. so what does this mean when he’s picking out his pokemon? well, he doesnt lol. he gets someone else to choose for him based on what’s “optimal” bc he doesnt want a bad pokemon and trey ends up picking cyndaquil for him cus he thinks that cyndaquil/typhlosion and riddle are similar (also he doesn’t know pokemon meta) and riddle grows very attached to his cyndaquil, probably ends up giving it a nickname too. no one tell him about nuzlockes, he will cry at the thought of loosing his cyndaquil (and hes died a lot in games, hes learning tho)

CATER ~ im ngl cater is one of the last people i assigned a pokemon to so if it seems slapped on then thats why but also i still think the vibes work so well with him. if this was like an actual twst characters in a pokemon world au cater would absolutely be a pokemon coordinator or some sorta thing like that. definitely take a lottaaa photos with cute pokemon too, he’d be rly drawn to any cute pokemon HOWEVER (bc there’s always a however) the pokemon he picks isnt one of the main pokemon that most people would consider the cutest out of the starters, its one he’s very drawn to and finds super cute regardless of what others think. this pokemon is… CHIMCHAR! idk if others will agree with me on this but i personally think cater and chimchar would make such a cute combo and his chimchar would be super camera ready at all times, they’d have so many selfies together. i didnt mean for caters thing to be so long but to wrap things up fast he plays the games bc theyre recommended and popular, and has watched some shows for the same reason however he’s not a die hard fan of pokemon.

TREY ~ and finally the dorm mother! as mentioned in riddle’s thing, chenya was very into pokemon as a child (still is for nostalgia probably) and thus he tried his hardest to also get trey into pokemon though trey only ever rly got as far as watching some of the shows and collecting some of the cards. he actually knows how to play the pokemon card game the official way though! which is certainly a surprise considering the fact he forgot the basic type matchups. when the others get trey back into pokemon he ends up growing attached to chespin very quickly. Just a little cute quirky grass guy, he grows attached instantly. he likes all the grass type starters a lot but chespin stands out to him most, probably because he has an attachment to the kalos region too. he finds chespin in the show to be a very charming lad and now he wants a chespin/chesnaught pokemon card.

I’ll do the others when i feel like it i just didnt wanna cram all 22 students on one post thats a lotta effort. maybe ill do an actual twst characters in a pokemon universe someday tho who knows

THERE. finally she just grabs him and makes him do things with her!! like messing around with his messy hair!! or playing games!! she tells him everything that's happening with pico because he always listens!! pcnj is initially startled and tries to get away the first few times but really who can escape a demoness so he just accepts his fate and plays along... until hes not. because gf may be a casual gamer but she really tries her best, and not to backseat game but he kinda likes giving her pointers or helping her solve puzzles shes stuck on. they spend a lot of time hanging in her room before bf BUSTS in to be territorial and gf is like oh!! we can all play together!! and pcnj and bf are like OKAY YEAH LETS FUCKING GO and pcnj always makes sure to beat bf within an inch of his character's life, but he'll let gf win every other match because "wow gf you're getting better lmao good job" and bf is fuming. hes so mad. gf is so happy but he wants to tear out pcnj's throat so much. pico is just happy that pcnj and gf are getting along, to the point where she starts actively messaging him tiktoks and he responds back with emojis or keysmash. he gets so used to gf just up and carrying him away that almost looks forward to it, and hey, would you look at that, maybe having friends with real people isnt so bad. bf is so mad tho, he cant stand this twink why is here, why is gf playing stardew valley with him, he likes it better when pcnj is crying somewhere, but gf gets all sad if pcnj accidentally slips up and makes his little heartbroken faces around her like no!! bestie let's go get some milkshakes :((
