hi, yes, me again—quick notes just cause i got like 15 asks abt certain things in relation to kotn in my time away and answering them in one is easier:

finney doesn’t LIKE torture. it does not bring him joy. he really doesn’t. partly because of childhood trauma, partly because of mr. b; the only person he actively likes causing pain to is robin. he tortures because he’s told to. the reason he goes off the rails so often and is never really seen being a perfect soldier in the present-tense of the fic is because bruce and griffin let him. when i said they were the ones who held the leash, i meant that. anything and everything he does is because bruce and griffin Let Him. if his actions bothered them past momentary concern it would be Known. quickly. they don’t get him in line because they don’t WANT him in line. they don’t jerk the leash and tighten it because they don’t WANT to. if they wanted to, they are not above it and will do it. finney knows this. he says, even in his own thoughts—that they’ve never done it to him. not that they never WOULD. if they view it necessary, they can do it.

griffin does like torture, but he doesn’t explicitly view it as torture. he doesn’t kill people often solely because he has never had much of a reason to, even on missions. he is with billy, and has since become unbothered by his own reveal to billy, because he has nothing to worry about. billy has proven he would do anything to keep griffin but only momentary pain and betrayal like injections and spiriting away via plane. griffin tortures people. he dissects people. it’s his day job. he is not at all worried whatsoever.

i also feel it’s imperative to say or rather to reiterate due to the chapters that will be released: bruce doesn’t like unnecessary violence, everything is a necessary death for a plan he has, calculated. he has never, and will never, kill without purpose in this fic. he does very horrific shit and i truly want to stress that. he is not at all above murder. and i want to also add he is the only character in this fic who is not above killing children if needed. vance may occasionally surprise him but do not think he is, by any means, the damsel in distress here. this is not a beauty and the beast situation. they are both the beast. (bruce’s previous reactions to death wasn’t because he doesn’t kill—it was because it was unnecessarily gorey which he is not a fan of or he didn’t like the dead bird bc it was freaking him out n the implication it was a GIFT for him/red knew his location n then AFTER the momentary panic he thought it (the bird) was cool. his nightmare about said bird in the next chapter was because he didn’t like the idea of being at someone’s mercy and being a goddamn bird? “he’s ‘lucifer’ he’s not a goddamn bird or pet” - bruce yamada probably)

also, them giving away their real names does not matter in the slightest😭 it is mentioned like three (3!) separate times that the only thing that can be found on the boys is what “donna wants them to find” like ive gotten three asks & two comments on why finney “gave up his real name”… because it didn’t matter? like. robin assumed witness protection, finney used that against him + knew robin wouldn’t dig deeper if finney begged. it is stated (by robin) and acknowledged by finney, himself, that he took ‘benny’s’ feelings for finney and used them against him! he knew exactly what he was doing/asking! besides the most robin would find using finn’s real name is that he’s an fbi agent. they kept the fake names n stuff bc it’s more practical than running around w their real names.

and finally, because this is a little ridiculous now: THE TAG ‘UNRELIABLE NARRATOR’ IS THERE FOR A REASON. what vance sees is not what bruce or finn sees. none of the characters experience events the same way, n some of them have very different feelings than others would think. that is, in fact, the point😭just bc it’s not overt as in ‘vance remembers an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT CONVERSATION with different words said entirely’ way. unreliable narration can also be found in feelings and vibes characters have or portray vs what other people see.

What is the Tarnma penpals au? I've seen you mention it a couple times and am super curious about it!

So the Pen Pals AU is an idea that I got a couple of weeks ago. Kind of self-explanatory by the name, but the idea is it's a post-war scenario with a diplomatic ending b/t the Autobots and Decepticons. One of the many efforts to normalize relations is a pen pals program that's set up to pair Autobots with Decepticons under randomized pseudonyms. The goal is to try and create positive relationships based only on these letters and not any preconceived notions based on faction or identity. (Also it's pre-Earth which means it's pre-Delphi for Pharma, so his normal non-traumatized personality features.)

Pharma and Tarn naturally get paired up under this program, and the first part of the AU/fic (yes I'm going to write it eventually) is them basically having their pen pals relationship turn from friendship to heavily implied mutual romantic attachment. Their individual daily lives are also shown bc each of them is dealing with their own identity-related crisis: Tarn struggling with depression and addiction in the aftermath of all the things he did for the DJD and confusion over why Megatron just had them change so suddenly. Pharma with the realization that his whole life has just been defined by his accomplishments and he's lived his life in a way where he's oft-respected and admired, but never loved for who he is as a person rather than what he does.

The whole AU was originally meant to be fluffy and slice-of-life-esque (there was even an arranged marriage component in the very first conception of the idea), but as I fleshed out the setting more, I realized I wanted to actually delve deep into the implications of a post-war setting. So the Pen Pals AU has taken a darker turn recently; not darker as in fluffy romance to dead dove, but it's more like, the fluffy romance develops and then the past/war comes back to haunt Tarn and Pharma's relationship in a way that's very (re)traumatizing, both for them individually and their chances of being able to stay together as a couple.

So the fact that Tarn was in the DJD/oversaw Grindcore and did countless atrocities is very much an element of the story that's explored rather than shied away from. At first he deals with it on his own, and for a while he lives in blissful ignorance knowing that his pen pal is the one relationship he has with a "normal person" (he knows that his pen pal is a doctor, aka not a hardened soldier and criminal). Unfortunately things get complicated when his pen pal asks to meet IRL because he wants them to be more than friends, and Tarn realizes that he can't move forward with this new, blooming relationship without being honest about who he is. On Pharma's end, he has to grapple with the idea of choosing love over reputation, following his heart rather than his fear of social rejection/ostracization. Especially when the consequences of continuing to date Tarn could go from just "people judging him" to.... well, that's what me eventually writing the fic is meant to reveal. :)

TLDR: Tarn and Pharma meet as anonymous pen pals, end up having a lot of shared issues re: loneliness and isolated public personas, help each other solve their personal problems, share a mutual love of music, and fall in love, then realize who the other is. Complications ensue.
