[Equius's POV] well. that was odd. it is not every other day that that Vantas seeks you out, though he did seem rather on edge. the highblood wouldn't really have attacked anyone, would he? it isn't time for him to do that, right? well, if it is true, it would probably be best to follow Vantas' instructions and find the others.

please be safe, Nepeta. of course, she can take of herself, but this is not a normal situation. maybe the highblood will ignore the lowerblooded trolls and start higher on the hemospectrum. in which case you might be in trouble. it would probably be wise to keep moving. perhaps you should look for Ampora. if the highblood starts targeting the others the way you thought, he is also in danger, more so than yourself. and the nobility must be served.

[Eridan's POV] this whole magic thing (or rather, ironic science magic) is getting easier. Kanaya deserves a thank-you. or she would, if you hadn't killed her. a shame, really. you honestly feel sort of bad about it. however, you've got more important things to do. after "borrowing" Kan's computer and looking through her exchanges with the human sorceress, you've developed a plan to win everyone's admiration. and save the universe, you guess. too bad it involves interacting with the dumb windy human. ughhhh. wait. what's that sound?

Propaganda for Meowrails:

They're part of an alien species that has four major relationship types, the one they're in is call 'moraillegiance'. It calls for a very high level of interpersonal commitment but doesn't seem to carry any sort of romantic undertones. There are multiple instances throughout the comic where these two are held up as the textbook example of their relationship type, it's stated that them being 'moirails' is 'extremely obvious to everyone around them', and there's basically an alternate universe where the people that were their distant ancestors find out about their relationship and, even though they previously had no interest in one another, they decide to try being moirails too because the idea of having something similar seems so appealing and promising. They also give each other a lot of shit but clearly care about one another and at times risk their lives to save each other.

Thank you for your response and reflection. Definitely one of the best analysis I have read about them in a long time. Thank you for being honest and holding the characters to what they actually do, and how the text is trying to guide the narrative of them, instead of the fandom's perception.

I don't think I have encountered this argument for their relationship before (I mean I might have, over the years… but I couldnt remember when) , but it is absolutely valid, because it's reassured by the text.

Later on Equius does mention to her that he 'shudders to think' what he might ended up as, were it that Nepeta was not his moirail.

And this what the text tells us, as in, what the point of moirallegiance is. Trolls are described as an angry race, who need the help of others to avoid causing damage to themselves or their surroundings.

In essence this is a effed up responsibilty. Everything about trolls is messed up but. If you think about it, even this is too. Like "I dont really care for or like that guy but somebody needs to hang out with them or theyll kill everyone". This is the kind of shit Alternian kids need to think about. Kids and fun.

Yes he definitely *tries* to mold her into something of his own image, but fails, because Nepeta is resilient and also because he is a massive screw-up. Like an ineffectual villain that destroys his own doomsday device, and makes himself look like a complete imbecile.

And yes Nepeta is indeed just simply a nice person. As you said, she is an optimist, and because of this, a little naiive. She can detect bad intentions but still wants to give a chance to basically anyone. In the chaotic and cutthroat world of Alternia someone like her wouldn't really fit in, but she still manages to survive and keep being an optimist.

I definitely like this being added to their narrative because it makes them imperfect.

And yes. That is something that is important. Because now, meowrails no longer have this 'pristine perfect model relationship' flag hanging above them, as the fandom so graciously awarded them this honor.

I admit I am a complete and utter hypocrite, because I too was always a part of those people who loved to sing praises about meowrails to the moon and back.

I still do, I still love them. But I think it's important to take them as they actually were. Instead of always living in tooth rottingly sweet headcanonland. So with all this, I feel like this pairing gained some layers as far as my interpretation goes.

It's a complicated matter. He's misguided and doing shit that is morally wrong, but aligns with the stuff he was taught. She thinks he's putting up an unnecessary front, but doesnt have the worldlyness to really dig into it. She's a little disconnected from everything, but can sense the potential goodness in all. He, as a blue blood has privileges that were granted to him, and even encouraged to do, so he tries to single her out and shut her off from the others. Even Eridan had black flirt-flarping sessions with Vriska. But when most trolls would try and completely avoid him, this one, Nepeta, stuck around. He can't let that go. He can't let her hang out with potentially dangerous trolls. He doesn't want to be alone.

She can do without him though. But she's afraid if she's not around he might do something that everyone would regret. So she sticks around. Its scary. He looks really menacing. But then ends up kind of genuinely liking him? Because he is actually less rigid than appears to be.

It seems they're getting the hang of it. All of Nepeta's mannerisms rub off on him. It's real psychology, we all adapt our friends and surroundings way of being in small ways. It really seems like they have made such progress.

And then they were gone.

But the point is, Nepeta is struggling with complicated, multi-layered feelings regarding him. Not to fall off too much into romanticism (because I will like the bleeding heart moron I am), but I think that's great, because it makes it seem more real. It wasn't the absolute most perfect relationship that popped out fully formed from Hussie's head. No. Like real relationships there's a bit of hurt in each of us. We don't always mean to hurt those we love. But sometimes we end up doing it anyway. The question is, if we can learn from these points of our lives.

Him failing at a critical moment, perhaps the most critical moment in paradox space, was all that bad shit finally catching up with him.

That's why I agree with Hussie now. I know him now, like you do Hussie. And yeah a massive force of whiplash was always heading towards him, courtesy of the universe.

But the aftermath is important too. I remember how I always feared that the actual meowrails reunion would be absolutely completely bitter. Just cuss him out and leave him to rot. I always thought, "well that's what he deserves", so that's what he'd get.

But the eternal shining light of friendship proved me wrong. All off-screen of course (nepeta already furgave you for that). Figures. But still. Maybe we can continue after the hurt feelings? After the damage? Maybe we can start over? Maybe we don't have to burn the bridges? Guess we'll never know. It doesn't make it easier IRL neither. I don't know if holding on is a good idea. I don't know if Im letting them 'get away' with stuff, or if Im using them for my own purposes. I dont know if Im holding them back or if its other way around.

But for a small, fleeting moment it seemed like friendship was real and unrelenting. And that's all I cared about.

This is wonderfully put, anon. This might be the first time I've read such a thoughtful reflection of Meowrails that acknowledges the relationship's flaws, yet still comes out with a positive outlook on it.

Though our preferences may not align, I find your perspective valid and I can definitely understand the appeal it holds for you. Thanks for sharing this with me.

davepeta...... the thing u gotta consider about them is the fact that homestuck is really explicitly a Narrative. like, sure, it sucks that davesprite couldnt have a satisfying story as his own person, but thats BECAUSE he was structurally a Less Important Dave in the storyline, and he knew that, and it made him really depressed. I love davesprite, but he was always always always going to be held in comparison to dave, and dave was always always always going to be the one more important to the living players, and the one getting real character development. there was no way forward for davesprite alone! which sucked

wrt nepeta..... she had been dead a long time. she was a ghost, she was pretty happy hanging out w her version of equius in the afterlife, and it was really awkward and shoehorned in to have her brought back as a sprite just to make jasprose happy. but u know what? her version of equius became arquius. and the x2 combo of a meowrails and strider bros reunion in arquius and davepeta makes me gd cry

the thing about merging into davepeta for davesprite especially is that it made them a distinct, relevant character again. something seperate from dave, something that could narratively have their own development and relationships. its similar to how rosesprite became much happier as jasprose; she didnt have to bow down as the alpha rose anymore, because she was something different now. neither of them felt relegated to the sidelines the way the sprites prototyped w only one person often do.

While writing conciliatory relationships, I like to switch it up between "one party is the concilliated and one party is the concilliator" (as in canon) and "both concilliate and are concilliated", though the former is never quite as strict as canon.

For example, in Eldred, Leusse, and Mentis's auspisticism, the concilliator is pretty clearly Eldred, but Leusse and Mentis do also have to auspitize between the other two from time to time, especially towards the end of their relationship when things are falling apart. This is especially interesting considering how badly their ashen relationship is failing, honestly. Eldred tries his best to be a good auspitice while dealing with growing feelings of dissatisfaction with the relationship and the knowledge that there's something else going on that he doesn't understand, which over time make maintaining the relationship increasingly daunting. Mentis will occasionally try to more overtly control Eldred like she does with Leusse, and Leusse "auspitizes" them to keep her off him. Mentis' attempts at auspisticism are also fake, even more so than Leusse's, because when their relationship starts failing it's Leusse that tries to fix it, mostly by talking to Eldred, and Mentis finds excuses to "mediate" as a way of getting between them before they realize just how much of a problem she is or try to break up.

Meanwhile, in every single instance of Laedre/Cuimia moirallegiance (they're the meowrails of Fragments sheerly in the sense that every Laedre is in a moirallegiance with their respective Cuimia. Which, funnily enough, was an accident.) it's a situation where they're both concilliating. Both Peleme and Pasque, despite being generally very nice people, can be exceptionally violent at times, Peleme because of how she was socialized and Pasque because he's used to being powerless and living in fear. Leusse helps reroute Peleme's more aggressive urges into the relatively non-dangerous and objectively funny outlet of cartoon villainy. Carcer handles Pasque's issues at the source: he and Pasque have been through a lot of shit that, while very different, has a lot of similarities, and they've both got some similar feelings about it. He's got a sort of "if we're backed into a corner, at least we're in it together" that works wonders on Pasque's feelings of powerlessness in a way that a less pessimistic form of comfort just can't. On the other hand, you've got Leusse and Carcer, queen and king of self-destructive behavior. I'll elaborate on this part another time, but the long and short of it is that Peleme keeps Leusse out of trouble because she's one of the few people whose advice Leusse respects; meanwhile Pasque does his moirail duties the way they're more typically portrayed, in that he comforts the bullshit out of Carcer.

None of this is to say, of course, that the first type of conciliatory relationship is bad and the second is good. I picked the examples I picked because they're the most prominent examples of conciliatory romance in Fragments.

calling it an act 6 take was probably kinda inaccurate since it diverges so much from the canon story.. really it would've been an AU where equius and nepeta lived because they happened to get distracted and by wasting time they end up not crossing paths with gamzee and dying. thanks to some contributions from them, everyone is able to meet up together on the meteor instead of getting separated

from there it was just kind of bunch of disorganized ideas that i thought would be cool lmao, so here are some in no particular order:

other characters try a lot harder to help gamzee manage his issues since he hasn't killed anyone. rose would become his very qualified 13 year old psychologist

the canon alpha timeline still exists and aradia realizes pretty quickly that everyone in this adventure is doomed because meowrails weren't meant to survive. would explore the nature of doomed timelines and the idea of paradox space as a computer figuring out when a particular instance of a character or place no longer has any important links to the alpha timeline and deallocating their spots in memory when that's the case, basically cosmic decision tree pruning. other characters also eventually realize this and try to find ways to prevent this from happening to them.

the kids and trolls would learn that they'd have the chance to revive some of the dead using the kernelsprites in the alpha session and they'd be faced with deciding who to bring back. the cast would continue to talk to the trolls who died in murderstuck in the dreambubbles and the dead trolls would have various opinions on whether or not they wanted a second chance. the kids would also have varying opinions on whether they wanted to try bringing their guardians back.

caliborn appears at various points as a ghost offering guidance of questionable quality. we find out later that he's specifically the instance that was in LE, and he's now in the dreambubbles after the death of LE and is contributing to LE's demise because being LE actually sucked a lot. against all odds, he becomes good friends with nepeta (i also had him becoming buddies with john in this au and liked some of the dialogue i imagined for them so much that i made an adventure about them talking at each other)

LE is incapacitated through a team effort that involves caliborn, dirk, equius, and gamzee all rejecting the flaws that their canon characters at the time of LE's creation had failed to overcome. equius successfully shoots an arrow at him and hits him in the shin, thematic stuff like that, etc.

the final blow on LE is delivered by nepeta, who uses her rogue of heart abilities to steal his identity as the indestructible arbiter of the alpha timeline, and the end is about nepeta rewriting the laws of the universe in a scene that's a ripoff of madoka

the tone would still be mostly pretty silly it wouldn't have been hardcore sadstuck and the ending would have been about as happy as i could reasonably make it.

but anyway yeah that was the first adventure idea i had and i do think it would've been a lot of fun! like i said, i decided to do something smaller since i had no idea if i could commit to any kind of webcomic type project and because i'm still trying to get better at drawing and animating even now.. maybe eventually though, since i still think there are some decent ideas in there.

John Ruins a Wedding is one of the BEST things I've seen for homestuck in literal years. Like before Homestuck even ended. Everything is so in character. Can we just hand you over act 6 and let you rewrite it?
