What do you consider to be upper middle class nowadays?

Honesty idk. I live in a part of America near a lot of wealth and my parents never really talked about money. I went to school with people whose parents paid for everything no sweat + lived in mini mansions, and those whose electricity was getting cut off semi-regularly. (These folks were at different schools though.)

I’ve looked up your question quite a few times myself and still haven’t found a satisfactory answer.

My own context:

We aren’t struggling to pay for groceries during this inflation and I keep seeing my mom buy new clothes. A natural disaster semi-forced reconstruction on our home and insurance didn’t pick it up, so my mom has been spending almost any spare minute in the past 5 months navigating government aid and loans bc ~70k is NOT something blow-over-able. My parents are both homeowners, but not yacht-owners. We hire a cleaning lady to come every two weeks. We can get take-out/go to restaurants without worrying about the last time we ate out or quite how much it will be, and we eat a lot of frozen food. My parents def used to be flush rich at one point bc they have money set aside for me to go to an expensive college with almost no student loans.

I think if the parents/moneymakers of a household can say they’re living “comfortably,” then they’re upper middle class.

okay so what really confuses me is that ya'll say that nothing is real but " " (yourself) and other people dont exist.... but like, if others dont exist.. why r u explaining this philosophy to non-existent people.....? so now buggy has amassed a huge following by accident and the public gets even more thirstier because of the thirst trap photos,, and shanks be on his knees and jelly that so many ppl are thirsting after his buggy, and then ransacked a ship carrying the buggy pics n merch and had added it to his buggy room, which is a room full of buggy merch n pics lmao,, the red force r exasperated at first but then took a look at the pictures and they kinda understand their captain now lolll

And buggy still remains oblivious,, maybe until he decides to sail to an island and instead of ppl being kind of wary yet accepting due to his charisma,, he'll be bombarded with ppl carrying his (maybe thirsty) photos/posters asking for gis autograph,, and he be so shocked n confused but hes still a performer at heart so he fakes smiles thanks the crowd of ppl and signs the posters,,, Then suddenly he goes back to crossguild n asks them about it and is pissed at the fact that he couldve made more money in his knowledge lololol

Some general headcanons here on my end, but Buggy is STRONG okay, both bc of his circus skills, knife fighting and devil fruit. He just isn't Full Six Pack Washboard Abs. He's got a little curve. A layer of cuddly softness. HEALTHY muscle.

So he absolutely has a multi-faceted fan club of pirates, civilians, marines, alike. Some love the soft prettiness. Some like the fierce candid shots. Some are absolutely FERAL over casual competence.

Buggy regularly has cross training classes, I bet. He's a bit of a jack of all trades, and so he's got some skill in all sorts of topics that are useful. Piracy and circus performing are a lot more alike than a lot of people think, after all. He arranges classes and stuff to make sure everyone has some sort of transferable skill.

It's not HIS fault that he has his hair up for practicality, a sleeveless leotard and high waited capris. He's dressed for class, that's all.

If he does catch anyone staring, he bristles, taking it the wrong way.

Later on down the line, all of the sudden realizations that people are making MONEY, off of pictures from HIM hit him like a sack of bricks, and he rushes to his sassy besties, just "Gal, Vida. Am I pretty??? Like seriously, AM i????"

The candid shots become photoshoots, become thirst traps, become eventual pin ups after Mihawk and Crocodile get Inspired. Buggy has the range to play the masc and femme with ease, and he's surprisingly photogenic.

like the last set of propoganda, there is a healthy amount of bullet points. u have been warned lol.

i will say that this ep is not as poetically beautiful as last one with the themes, the symbols & subtext, the parallels, the dichotomies etc. etc. but there r lots of special lovely moments. & what can u do! character quality only goes downhill from here!! i'm absolutely bitter!!! anyway here are a bunch of scenes where they make heart eyes at each other (:

after house & park have just made their bet on whether park will get fired after the sexual harassment hearing, the queen herself (adams) enters stage left...

... smiling so friggin softly at park as she walks in. this is then contrasted to adams' smile dropping as soon as house opens his mouth. clearly the only conclusion is that adams views park as a ray of glorious sunshine whilst house is it's antithesis.

when adams says she was at a job interview, park looks down & then does the tiniest smirk when house says he hopes it went terribly. make of that what u will.

may just be me with my googly eyes, but park does a lot of lil glances at adams in this scene (:

secondly, park - who is clearly not used to breaking rules - is worried about holding the ddx in foreman's office, which adams smiles off to the side at. adams also bites back a smile when park falls for house's teasing that foreman's in the office, like she thinks it is sweet (also, i very, very respectfully admire the way adams is sitting in this low quality image. & the confidence she exudes).

when adams is getting righteously pissed bc of the patient who hires children in his factory, park opens up about this happening in her family & it being for the best thing for them in a tough situation. park's body language (limited eye contact, softer voice) shows that this is a kinda vulnerable for her to do - especially for someone who is so close to her family, implying this as a sign of trust. but the certainty and calmness in the way that she speaks shows that she does it bc she thinks it's important for adams to have perspective on this. & adams looks so genuinely caring about her family's issues (not that anyone had any doubt tbh).

on loyalty: "to willfully identify yourself as something else is a perversion of self-expression". house back at it in this episode with his elder gay mentor tutorials for park & adams. first session in last ep was flirting through prank wars, this second session in this ep is now on self-acceptance. glad he has his priorities straight on what's most important to learn first in these tutorials <3.

not relevant but wilson as the other elder gay mentor giving park a tutorial on bets (another ritual amongst the gays of this show) so that she can beat house, the master of all gay betting procedures. they r both teaching park & adams how to blossom into themselves. truly beautiful. if only we had enough time with park & adams to see them make a bet against one another. alas ):

so park asks adams for a character ref to give to the committee. which is huge; the last ep demonstrated that park hates owing ppl, most likely an immigrant pride thing according to house. so the fact that she's willing to abandon her pride & be vulnerable, willing to owe herself to adams establishes the trust they have developed since.

adams teases her a bit "i thought you don't like favours" & mimicking what park said to her last ep "i hardly know you". park sighs like she regrets even saying this. she underestimated adams' ability to hold grudges lol <3

like look at her pouting about it 😭 she is so salty she basically refuses to give the favour purely to fuck with park. which is actually a hilarious contrast after last episode where adams payed like $5000 to fix what she thought was park's car, got her a job interview & gave her expensive shoes - purely to fuck with her. complete role reversal. she's so mentally ill. i love her <3

park also does a lot of glances at adams in the following scene, crucially when adams isn't talking too (:

when they go into andrews' room, even though park is ahead in the corridor, adams walks into the room first before park. this may have been intentional on adams' part, to deflect the attention of off park straight away & to give her time to brace herself. protective gf <3

also adams saying "can we go now" when house makes an inappropriate comment at park to andrews.

adams doing the tilt-table test for park by herself, disobeying house's orders & putting herself at the most legal risk so that park can prove her worth to house & prepare for the hearing. this is the first example of sacrifice as a sign of love between these two (for other ways love/flirting is presented between these two, hilson and others in this show, see the s8e3 propoganda post).

adams sticking up for park mid-hearing, taking the blame for the tilt-table test going awry. then park doing a 'no i'm spartacus!' immediately in response. bear in mind that this is at a hearing in front of a board which has the power to remove them both from their positions, and yet they both unhesitatingly sacrifice their positions for each other in the name of loyalty & honesty. these r attributes that they both value deeply (park bc her family & adams bc her ex-husband), making them compatible. this is also the second example of self-sacrifice as a sign of love, now reciprocated by park.

adams' devastated, helpless look at park after all this, mouthing "i'm sorry". she did everything she could to protect her & yet ): </3

then cut to adams being pissed at house, all like "ah fuck, i can't believe you've done this ):<" & gritting her teeth but resigned, knowing arguing won't solve anything.

(oof that quality sorry lol) but then house reveals he manipulated park into doing the tilt-table test so that he could win the bet that she would get fired & adams is pissed again for park <3

on other notes, park's hearing broke my heart ): but then her victory dance cured me so all is fine (also her victory dance was soo much better than wilson's "fff-fifty bucks!" one. godddd). & then adams' rage room sequence to morning has broken was elite <3 yeah this was a lovely ep for these two (:

my observations on canon nxx team typing/texting styles and behaviors within the nxx gc

wc: 1.1k words about words

vyn richter isnt texting, he's writing memorandums

texts like hes writing with a quill and parchment, like hes writing MISSIVES TO SEND OFF INTO THE VALLEY OF YONDER.

in terms of vocabulary (he's used the word "posthaste" and the sentence "I also lack such leisure" sounds like it came from a black and white photograph) hes slightly archaic.

and his sentence construction ("A name that rings familiar", vyn, it's a TEXT, why do you sound like a yellowed note found in a haunted house) like, vyn texts as if he's a fucking lovelorn maiden sending letters off to his lover who is fighting in the war

HE REFUSES TO USE CONTRACTIONS AND IT DRIVES ME NUTS. vyn richter says FUCK UR APOSTROPHES!!! it must be Should Not (not shouldnt) must be I Will (not i'll). apostrophes found dead in a ditch and vyn richter killed them all.

the reason why im getting "My Dearest Rose, My Most Beloved Lover, When Shall You Return To Me?" kinda shtick from vyn is because his word choice seems to be chosen for aesthetics and vibes, his sentence construction does not scream utility but instead screams DRAMA, the lack of contractions betrays the writer's desire for the reader to SAVOR EACH WORD. vyn could just text "I don't have that kind of time" or "That's familiar" but he wont because that lacks the PANACHE he so desperately maintains in almost every aspect of his gosh dang self.

(sidenote: im so sorry for his students, lol???? most profs ive encountered write rlly short and to the point emails and usually it ends with "Sent from my Ipad" because profs rarely give a fuck about looking smart in emails. but dr. vyn richter...the emails he'll be sending will be...an experience lmao)

although he HAS been noted to say "Heh" in chat. i wouldnt put it past him to type a "Hehe" if he's feeling particularly mischievous (or if he REALLY wants to unnerve others). in the nxx gc, he's not above engaging in some squabbles against the others (but in his defense, marius is always starting it, haha) but generally he's civil, tho he is VERY CAPABLE of passive aggression. vyn's Off The Shits texts would be like "Respectfully, get fucked. Best regards," in a cursive font

overall: vyn texts gracefully to the point that he sounds like he shouldnt exist in the year 2030 but instead in an old regal portrait in a musuem.

artem wing texts like there's a job to be done and (he gets that job done)

texts EXTREMELY TO THE POINT. i dont notice anything special with his vocabulary or sentence structure; he uses ordinary words and puts them all together in efficient messages and he uses contractions when it's smoother to do so. what i DO notice though is that ALL his messages in the nxx gc (his personal texts r another matter) are the following: questions, answers, observations, and MC I'm Worried About You Please Stay Safe.

artem texts as a means for no nonsense information exchange which very much fits who he is as a whole!!! the conversation needs to move forward productively but he isnt immune to using a message to compliment mc or express one (1) feeling.

additionally, that one bit in the symphony of the night event chat where vyn and marius were throwing rocks at each other through texts and artem came in like "shut up" and then steered the convo back on track n just STEAMROLLING over vyn and marius trying to continue their insult hurling like KJBSJKGSDSSD. artem is really the mom friend of this group. hes like "Is This Necessary? No? Well Then Stop Talking About It."

overall: artem texts pragmatically and clearly and for a purpose. of all the boys, he's the one i personally would enjoy communicating with the most because i value clarity a LOT.

sidenote: however, i do think that artem, in his effort to find the most efficient sentence, sometimes does not realize connotations of words/phrases. so like at themis law firm, he's definitely sent the emails pictured below (can we get a prayer for the poor intern who got these emails? they had a heart attack....)

thankfully, marius von hagen and luke pearce are texting like normal people

im lumping these two together because theyre pretty similar on basically all strictly language fronts: vocabulary, sentence construction, contractions, punctuation (they both like using "!" and sometimes "!?", theyre so cute lol)

i do wanna note that marius does like going for the occasional onomatopoeia. "Tch", "Uh", "Ah" that kind of stuff. i like it a lot because it fits marius who is just so fucking noisy all the time HAHA.

in terms of behavior, theyre also p similar. though, marius is more likely to give in to his desire to be a bit of a shithead and go off topic. marius is also more likely to share his opinions and thoughts (and yeah theyre related to the case but compared to the rest of the boys, marius is rlly like "im sorry what, we have to go to a school??? STUDENTS R INVOLVED IN THE INTERNATIONAL CYBERCRIME????") which also fits because marius loves letting everybody know that hey! hes here! and him being here means he has STUFF TO SAY

luke is the CHILLEST PERSON in the gc, in terms of texting. he doesnt clash against the others, keeps the convo going, and is polite in a laid back way. the only time in the nxx gc i saw him experience some kind of intense emotion was when i made my mc go "but i can go to the abandoned server room on my own"

and then luke starts texting gravely as if HE AND EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE GC IS ABOUT TO FUCKING DIE. no chill on this dudes. theres either 0 stakes or ALL OF THEM to the highest degree. very much fits luke's tendency to be like "haha im having a wonderful time and im smiling and now ive spiraled into a ditch of despair and suffering and sadness"

sidenote: marius and luke's dms would be a fucking trip to read.

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)

The thing is, he actually really loves giving affection. He’s usually just busy, so he never has the time. But when he does have time, expect him to be all over you (respectfully of course). His favorite form of affection is when one of you is cooking and the other will come up and give a hug from behind. He melts no matter which position he’s in. 

B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)

Most of y’alls hangouts include baking or having tea. He also likes when you follow him around while he works so that he has company. In his free time, he likes to take you to different stores and restaurants in both the Human World and the Devildom so that you two can sample what they have. He’s also lowkey chaotic, so he might drag you into pulling pranks every now and then. 

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

Again, he’s actually really affectionate, so cuddles aren’t off the table. For him, cuddling after a long day is a great way to unwind. It’s also one of the few times he lets his guard down a bit and actually begins to relax. Basically what I’m saying is, please give this man cuddles. He deserves it. 

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)

He’s honestly one of the best choices if you want to settle down. He can cook, clean, and any other chores you so desire. And he also loves the idea of settling down. He’s been working for so long and, while he loves his job, it can be pretty taxing on him sometimes. The idea of just leaving it all behind to settle down with the one he loves sounds like a dream to him. 

E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)

Probably the bluntest out of anyone. Like, he does not care about how the other will react. He’s more used to people breaking up with him since he cares about his job more than them in most cases, so if he’s the one initiating the break up, then it’s for a reason. And that reason is probably not a good one. He will probably make the person cry. 

F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)

Marriage isn’t all that interesting to him. he doesn’t find it all that necessary like others do. To him, just being together is enough, so he doesn’t need anyone to certify it for him. However, if you wanted to get married, he would never refuse.  

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

He’s surprisingly gentle. He understands how sensitive emotions can be, so he’s super careful with the one’s he cares about. The last thing he wants is to hurt someone he loves, so he’s super gentle. He’s also aware of how physically strong he is, so he tries his best to control himself so that he doesn’t accidentally lash out and hurt you. 

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

He doesn’t have a lot of time, so hugs are usually rare. But he loves them anyway. they’re a great way for him to recharge throughout the day. Just pop in every now and then and give him a quick hug and he’ll just die but you won’t know that.

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)

It takes him a long time to say it. Not necessarily because he’s scared or not ready, but just because he doesn’t see the point in rushing it. He knows you love him and that he loves you too, so he knows the words themselves aren’t needed. When he does say it, it’ll be absolutely perfect. 

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

He may seem like he doesn’t get jealous, but he does. In fact, he gets insanely jealous, especially of the brothers. You spend so much time with them, and he never has any time to spend with you since he’s always working. He hates that you two never seem to have time to be together, and that ends up making him jealous. Just give him some attention and he should calm down some. 

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

His kisses are so amazing. He always knows just what to do and when/where to do it. You will always be satisfied with him. His favorite place to kiss you is the nape of your neck since he likes the reaction it gets out of you. He also likes when you kiss his cheek since he finds it cute. 

L = Little ones (How are they around children?)

Oh, he hates kids. Absolutely despises them. The only exception is Luke since he is tolerable for the most part. But other than that, kids are one of his least favorite things. They’re messy, loud, and distract him from his work like Dia and the brothers lol.

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)

He usually has to wake up pretty early in the mornings, so they can go one of two ways. If you’re an early riser like him, you two will get ready and go to the kitchen to have breakfast together before he has to start work. If you tend to sleep in, he’ll get out of bed without waking you and send in another servant to bring you breakfast in bed with a schedule of where he has to be today so that you can come find him. 

N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)

Night time is pretty much the only time he ever gets to just relax and not have to worry about work. Expect to be pulled away to his room and not leave until morning. This is maybe the only time he can spend with you without the fear of being pulled away from you, and he’s going to enjoy it damnit. 

O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)

I doubt he’d ever reveal everything about himself. After all, he is quite mysterious. Obviously, he’d trust you enough to open up about some aspects of himself, but mostly just surface level things. If you really want to know something about him, your best bet is going to Diavolo, and even then it’s most likely a lost cause. 

P = Patience (How easily angered are they?)

This man is the definition of patient. It takes a lot to rile him up enough to actually snap. He’s been working a Dia’s butler forever now, so he knows how to keep his emotions under control. He may feel irritated or annoyed fairly often, but he will not let it show unless he is truly angered. 

Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?)

Of course he remembers absolutely everything about you. You so much as mention something you enjoy, he already has it to give to you. He has a great memory, and that’s only enhanced by how in love with you he is. 

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)

He isn’t one to have any one specific favorite, but he does love any time you two bake together. It’s such a calming thing, and you two can simply just have fun alone without having to deal with Dia or the brothers. It always brings such a smile to his face when he remembers all of the baking sessions you two have had. Even if you don’t know how to bake, that’s fine with him, cause he’s with you. 

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)

He’s very protective, but in a subtle way. He’s never one to be bold or over the top, but he still feels the need to protect you if he ever feels you’re in danger. Honestly, he’s scary enough on his own, so most other demons tend to leave you alone if you’re with him. And because you’re always around him, his scent started to rub off on you, alerting other demons to stay away even when he isn’t there. 

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?)

He’s used to planning huge events, so he can go as all out as you want. You want a party with every demon in the Devildom? It’s done. You just want a lowkey date alone with him? He can do that to. It all depends on what you want him to do. 

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)

He has a hard time separating himself from his work. After all, he’s been working for Dia for so long, so it makes sense that it would be hard for him to leave it alone, even for a few hours. Sometimes, you may have to pull him away from his work and force him to rest. If that doesn’t work, you might have to talk to Dia about getting him some time off. 

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

He is concerned with his looks, but only because of who he works for. He knows that he has to keep up appearances lest he embarrass Dia at all. Other than that, he could honestly care less about his looks. 

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

Quite honestly, he was already incomplete before he even met you, and he’s still somewhat incomplete now. He’s never once felt whole, and that didn’t change very much when you arrived. Yes, he loves you, but you didn’t change much of how complete he feels inside. So, yeah, he’d feel incomplete without you, but he feels incomplete regardless. 

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)

This isn’t so much a headcanon as just me being an angsty mess, but I just love the idea of him being lowkey jealous of Lucifer. I mean, ever since Luci fell and started working for Dia, he’s been getting so much credit for basically everything. I like the idea that maybe he gets a bit jealous of Luci and the attention and praise that he gets despite doing the same amount of work. (and yeah, I know this totally isn’t the case at all, and I’m sure he gets plenty of attention, but I love the idea of jealous, and kinda sad Barb). 

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)

He doesn’t like someone who's lazy and doesn’t take work seriously. he also doesn’t like anyone who consistently distracts him from his work without legitimate reason. Also anyone who insults Dia or presents any possible threat to him. Other than that, he’s surprisingly chill with almost anyone. 

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habits of theirs?)

More like lack of sleep habit honestly. I genuinely don’t believe that he sleeps. And if he does, it’s for a couple hours at the most. Really, he just works too much to sleep that much.

A lot of her lore unfortunately gets over shadowed and is misunderstood by the fandom. I understand not understanding her character but saying that shes badly written is discrediting cc!niki a lot. Because of the framing of her character its very easy to misunderstand her arc especially because c!niki is an unreliable narrator. This was an overgeneralization I made for the sake of brevity. I don't necessarily think that all of her fans were there before the dsmp. Another anon also said that they were there for her character (maybe I'm misremembering?), I don't find any particular problem with that.

I guess I understand her appeal, but as someone who was eager to get into her story and tried to analyze her character from every possible angle just to find a part I enjoyed/thought was good, I sincerely doubt you can change my mind.

thank you so much for taking the time to tell me this!!!! i really can't express how darn happy it made me and i'm so glad that you enjoy my writing this much!! to answer your question about how lucifer knows luke but not our lovely boy - the way i see it, i'm pretty sure luke knew lucifer before he fell, since we're told that he used to admire him even more than michael before he and the brothers rebelled and fell from the celestial realm (though i'd assume he was still very young and doesn't remember it clearly, since he apparently doesn't remember lilith), and i'd assume that he and lucifer have interacted since while the latter was a demon considering how much luke apparently hates him and how familiar lucifer's teasing is, while himbo angel hasn't really stepped foot out of the celestial realm and his gardens until joining simeon during his transfer year and was made during the war, which means that lucifer wouldn't have had an opportunity to meet him outside of maybe seeing him head butting demons out of the sky

ANYWAY............ do u mean like in general or me personally lmao bc my answer to the second is probably like. totally unhelpful bc I just kinda vibe it most of the time when I’m writing adflkjagdfk at least first drafts. editing is another story (standby. we’ll get there lmao)

[sidebar: OH MY GOD THIS ANSWER GOT SO LONG I’M SO SORRY IF THIS WAS A JOKEY ASK AND I JUST RAMBLED UNNECESSARILY FOR LIKE FOREVER I am just. I am very passionate about writing even though my own process is a Mess aldkfjglkgf anyway I’m putting this under a cut bc uh. this really got away from me]

alright so theoretically??? I think transitions are less important than like. there should be a point each scene is trying to make. it either develops character or plot or relationships or any combination of those, and you need to have enough to make that point and then it can end (though I overelaborate a lot so. idk. I don’t think I follow most of this advice even though I understand it In Theory adlfkgjlkf). similarly, when you string the scenes together, they should to build towards a larger narrative arc. like because character a learned this thing about themself in the previous scene, now they can confront character b about something else. or because of this character establishing moment, we can now have this character do this thing because we, the readers, now have some insight into their motivations/fears/desires/etc. or whatever. I guess this is sort of about transitions lmao but the point is that the larger narrative should connect, not that you need to be super careful always about making the words/physical scenes themselves connect, if that makes sense

imo scenes can start and end abruptly and like as long as the narrative point is made you don’t really miss out on much. I’m terrible at actually doing this which is why my fics all wind up so long but I don’t mind it at all when I’m reading. I think it’s really cool when someone can make a really powerful point with far fewer words than I ever could. idk who told me this maybe a professor or maybe I just read it somewhere but it’s often a good move to drop readers right in the middle of the action like you don’t need that much buildup to it (unless the buildup serves a purpose. maybe your character is hesitating. maybe they’re overthinking.) you might need more buildup/general exposition in the beginning to get us acquainted with the world of the fic, but especially as you go on, exposition only as needed can be a good move. something something kill your darlings, y’know?

actually this last bit I do follow sometimes lmao I often wind up with several pages of just. unused text that I’d written and then decided was extraneous to the point I was trying to make or made a scene drag on or just didn’t click. like for my current ongoing fic, I have entire scenes I’ve cut. I wrote 2k of a high school scene that I ended up only using slivers of for flashbacks. there was a scene when onigiri miya opened at one point. for my bkak big bang fic I literally have over 6k that I took out completely that if I had kept in would’ve given the whole thing a completely different tone that I decided I didn’t like after I’d already written like half the fic. so I scrapped them. I usually save these, not do anything with really but just because deleting text forever is hard lmao so saving the writing somewhere, if not in the fic itself, makes it easier for me to cut

ALL THAT SAID it’s also totally cool to just trust your gut and run with a vague idea. like this kind of writing should be fun and I wouldn’t let worrying about this stuff get in the way of having a good time. and also everyone’s process is different!! everyone’s writing style is different and your writing probably won’t have the same tone or style as writers you admire and that’s okay!! it’s a good thing, even, imo. that’s what’s so cool about writing and honestly a lot of my favorite writers do not write like I do and I love that

and when I said I vibe it w my fics I really honestly do 90% of the time. I usually have a general sense of where I’m going but it’s more enjoyable for me discover things on the way. some people swear by outlines, I fundamentally do not other than like. AT MAX writing a short bullet point list of scenes I want to include as I think of them bc my brain is like a sieve. and usually weeks after starting something, I’ll write a line/paragraph/scene and have an epiphany like oh my god. oh my god I get what this whole piece is trying to say. (this is my favorite part of writing tbh. discovering that moment) and once I have that, it’s much easier to figure out what belongs and what doesn’t when I go back and edit earlier scenes and make sure that everything ties together

and also, finally, (sorry I know I’ve been rambling for a while now I swear this is the last point) I want to note that all of this gets easier and more natural with practice. I’ve been writing for over 10 years, on and off. ao3 says I have 500k+ of published fic, not to mention I probably as much if not more from abandoned wips that will never see the light of day AND a bunch of stuff floating around on livejournal (lol) from the pre-ao3 days, so I have written. a LOT. and over time you sort of hone your intuition about what works for you and what doesn’t and at least for me, now I think a lot less abt the nitty gritty and just go wherever my writing takes me and I’ll usually land in the general vicinity of making sense. I think anyone can get there (or wherever it is you’d like to be if this isn’t your style). the trick is just to keep writing! it’s a skill like everything else ☺️

1) Keith (Voltron: Legendary Defender)

Okay I'm- trying not to laugh too hard because oh boy, this show was a complete mess. BUT Keith still stays as one of my favorite characters ever just because no matter how badly I was hurt by vld he'll always be precious to me 💖 He's hotheaded, cool and a lone wolf, but needs affection more than anyone else on the team. He's easy for me to relate to as I am more likely to push someone away than to keep them close just to avoid being hurt as well. His development is amazing tho and I love love him so much 😭 also it might be just that I have a soft spot for emo characters lmao

2) Todoroki Shoto (Boku no Hero Academia)

This just reinforces my statement earlier since Todoroki is pretty emo too :') But in a different way than Keith. If you are a part of bnha fandom you know he's generally a little bit overrated, but I couldn't help falling in love with him at first sight anyway lol His backstory is tragic but he keeps pursuing his dream and damn is he good at it. Also the combo of fire and ice is aesthetic goals. However, what I admire the most about Shoto is probably his loyalty to his friends, his will to fight and sometimes his goofy attitude (even if he probably isn't aware that he's being goofy lol) In conclusion: I love him, let's move on.

3) Uenoyama Ritsuka (Given)

Can I just stop to say how much I love given for a moment? Like I've never seen a bl anime/manga that would portray gay characters so respectfully 😭❤️ Ue is basically me gay panicking, I feel the boy so much :') OH also what's up with gays & guitars bc first given, then why r u and now also 2gether :') (I might be falling in love with this trope help) okay so: Ue is panicking when he starts liking Mafuyu but he handles it so well in a way? He doesn't deny his crush even if he is slow to notice it lol He's straightforward and sometimes a little bit rough around the edges, but even if he's supposed to be "the cool guy" we see him in the most hilarious settings and that just makes me love him all the more 💖 he respects Mafuyu and his boundaries and I want more of that in bl anime please

4) Eiji & Ash (Banana Fish)

Uhhhh this anime,,, I CANNOT choose between Ash and Eiji, I'm gonna forever see them as a pair and that's simply it. Ash is another emo one I would like to say that but he's actually not. He's backstory is heartbreaking and the life he has to live is dangerous and scary. He gets used to this reality where he has no one to rely on and no one to trust but then Eiji appears tearing his walls down and making him finally be able to show his soft and sensitive side to someone. Eiji is like a salve for his wounds and yes, I'm still emotional about it bc their relationship is one of the best developped I've ever seen. Their bond is so strong it's beautiful, they would literally die for each other. It's so apparent that they love each other and care for each other so much (don't mind me crying in the corner)

5) Percy Jackson (Percy Jackson & the Olympians)

PJ technically got me into fantasy/sci-fi in elementary school and it stays at the top of my favorite book series list ever (big props to Uncle Rick 👏) The whole series is funny and I would say pretty light-hearted even tho you know,,, Percy saves the world several times, lol, usual demigod things™. He's lovable. Son of Poseidon so he has seaweeds instead of a brain (or so you thought, he is brilliant at strategic planning and has a charisma to be a great leader), has a very good sense of humor, is loyal and would risk everything for his friends. Also he loves his girlfriend very much and I was crying while reading the House of Hades but no one needed to know that oh well. I'm also gonna mention Nico de Angelo here, since he fell in love with Percy (didn't we all tho) and was the first gay character I saw portrayed in the book and oh do I love him 😭💖

6) 707 (Mystic Messenger)

Was I losing sleep over this game? I was. Do I regret anything? Absolutely not. I think my choices are pretty boring tho, since Seven is literally everyone's favorite but oh boy there's a reason for that. Apart from being a talented hacker who knows too much (and I think is cautious of us the most at the start) he has a lovely happy-go-lucky personality composed of all the lame jokes, questions "have you eaten already" and anxiety (another emo one). He's that type of a character who will always try to make you laugh but you never know what's going on inside his head. He's mysterious and we don't get to know him well till his route so pretty much till the end of the game lol. Also he loves his brother, phd pepper, honey buddha chips and Elizabeth 3rd the most in this entire world and I love him for that

7) Evan Hansen (Dear Evan Hansen)

ANOTHER EMO ONE okay but hear me out Evan has social anxiety and its portrayal is almost too real for me. He makes a big oopsie which at the start seems like a little innocent lie but then snowballs to enormous sizes. He gains everything in this bargain, a best (dead) friend, a caring mother, a father, a girlfriend even - and then everything falls apart since it all is built on one fat lie. He makes a lot of mistakes and then some more but you get it and you feel for him, and you cry with him and you're happy for him. And when all of this is over you're glad that he's still there trying his best, taking it one day at a time. And sidenote: Ben Platt's voice is angelic and I love him as Evan 💖💖💖

8) Isak (SKAM)

Another gay panicking one. I'm starting to realize there's a set of traits that I particularly like in fictional characters lol But ye, when I was watching skam ofc it was the third season which gripped me the most and kept me on the edge, bc yet again Isak taking an "are you gay" test was way too real for me. He makes a lot of mistakes along the way of figuring out his sexuality and sometimes stuff with Evan becomes really messy (for both of them) but he stays with him nevertheless ❤️ Skam is literally so good in its portrayal of the characters :') Anyways: alt er love 💖

9) Viktor & Yuuri (Yuri on Ice)

Em, another one that I absolutely can't break up to just one bc how could I? Yuri on ice got me into skating ❤️ I went to an ice rink for the first time bc of this anime and I almost died but now look at me actually finishing my first three months of ice skating training and watching real life figure skating competitions :') Little did I know then. But they're not only my favourites bc of that, I genuinely love the development of their relationship from fan - idol through skater - couch to lovers and history makers in the end. I love how Yuuri is a ball of insecurities and how Viktor manages to reassure him. I love how Viktor fell in love with drunk Yuuri clinging to him. I love how at first Yuuri wasn't able to get too close to Viktor without getting flustered and it changes so drastically to them basically always holding onto each other. I love how Viktor was stuck with no inspiration but then Yuuri came and turned his world upside down. I love how they support and respect each other. I could probably go on into eternity like that and Yuri on ice isn't even the best anime I've ever seen but it's certainly my favourite one ❤️

10) Tutor (WHY R U)

I can't believe I'm so obsessed with thai dramas rn and I'm only gonna include Tor on this list smh He's mental attitude inspires me. He's able to hold so much and appears totally unfazed even if he's barely holding on inside. He's hardworking and doesn't want others to pity him since he can manage it all just fine. He has a kind heart, he's a wonderful friend (especially to Hwa, he always listens to her, gives her pieces of advise, supports her and tries to cheer her up). He never forgets to say thank you when he genuinely feels grateful. But as we've seen he also is passionate and when he loves he LOVES. Also he's the biggest tease to Fighter and I love him for that :') I am so satisfied just by seeing him happy, please do not change that whyru gods 🙏
