Hey, in your bio you claim that your fanfics are 100% true to canon. If that's the case, why do you keep misspelling the names of Victor and Yuri? Viktor and Yuuri are not their canon names :(

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by canon, but I gather that your ask refers to the spelling in the subs?

Yuuri is the romanised spelling of Yuuri's Japanese name. I've talked about this at length in this post if you're interested in a quick dive into Japanese language. Long story short, Yuuri is an accurate romanisation of 勇利 that's also less easier to confuse with the Russian Yuri. It has been in use by fans since the YOI aired and if you go to the Yuri!!! On Ice category on AO3, you will find that the official tag there is "Katsuki Yuuri" that even honours the Japanese order of 1. surname, 2. last name. The romanisation into Yuri would imply that the name consists of different kanji which meaning would stray away from the canon "bravery/courage and advantage/benefit".

I haven't posted about the origin of Viktor's name yet, but your ask gives me an excuse to do so - so let's go!

Originally, Victor is a Latin name, meaning "winner" or "conquerer". Since people in Ancient Rome didn't know the letter K, the word was spelled with c. Nowadays, the name can be found in various cultures. In French- and English-speaking countries, it is spelled with c. In German and Slavic name conventions the letter k prevails, although the variant "Wiktor" exists as well (not sure, how popular that one is, though, I have yet to see it in the wild).

However, Viktor Nikiforov is from Russia. There, his name is spelled Ви́ктор. Usually, when Russian names are transliterated to the Latin alphabet (i. e. our alphabet), the к is transliterated into k (in passports etc) whereas the Cyrillic letter that looks like the Latin c, с, is transliterated into s (Россия -> Rossiya/Russia). Unless he wants his name to sound Western and I don't know why the figurehead of Russian figure skating should even want that, he would probably prefer the spelling with k. Anyway, both spellings are correct. Just as with Yuuri's name, "Viktor" is truer to the character's origins.

I'm not sure why the English spelling was used for the subs. Maybe it was because every appearance of his name in the anime (e.g. in some scores table) uses the English spelling and the YOI creators simply decided to use the spelling of the more universeal language. Plus, the letter c is much more used in English language than the letter k, so the transliteration from Ви́ктор / ヴィクトル -> Victor probably made more sense to them. I wouldn't think too much of it, especially since you can find some funny spelling in the screencaps. Things can get messy super quickly when a name is transliterated from one language to another and then to yet another, especially since Japanese has their own script for non-Japanese words. The letters k and c are transliterated based on their pronunciation in their original language: ka (カ), ke (ケ), ki (キ), ko (コ), ku (ク), tsi/chi (チ).

Tldr: both Yuuri and Viktor are correct spellings of their respective names. Transliteration of spellings differ based on language region and these can even be a source of error.

PS: Ignoring canon would be like calling Viktor Vitali or Vassiliy because that's a totally different name.

Christmas at the Onsen - a YOI Advent Calendar!!!

Hey guys, I've made an advent calendar that tells a silly little story of Yuuri and Viktor's Christmas adventures in 25 drabbles of 100 words.

Synopsis:

After their retirement, Yuuri and Viktor return to Hasetsu to spend their first Christmas without competitions with Yuuri’s family. While Yuuri would be happy just going on a date, his perfectionist husband wants to celebrate big time, especially since it’s also his birthday. Needless to say, Viktor has dedicated himself to making this day unforgettable for his Yuuri and himself and thus, his preparations wreak total chaos over the onsen. Follow the boys' adventures through 25 silly little drabbles and sweeten your Christmas time.
