Hey yall don't skip on local food drives and charity work. I just got about $200 worth of groceries from one that will last me upwards of two months if I freeze and manage shit properly, including a couple nonfood items like toothbrushes, face masks, and laundry detergent
Don't be afraid to go sign up for these things, even if you're not "that poor", even if you think it's embarrassing, just fucking go do it. I'm emotional and in tears from how much this donation service does.
And if you do have the money? Go give a couple bucks to local charities rn, trust me, they're VERY good at stretching what they get and these volunteers work their asses off in the heat to get food and help to those who need it
#like i go to the monthly food box at the town hall most months and they have SO much stuff#but i checked out a second one recently bcz we'll usually run out halfway through the month#and now I'm like actually emotional over how much fucking free food these people gave us#I'm homebound and cant leave the house very much#so this shit helps so so much#aaaaaaaaaaaa#also is amazing seeing local farmers donating stuff#so many fresh fruits and veggies#i don't rven know what to DO with bok choi#but i got it! and now I'm gonna eat it!

Just rebloged that “solarpunk community center” art and now I’m thinking a Solarpunk Community Center. Like, how cool would it be? I wonder what they would have inside? Definitely some eco friendly arts and crafts inside. Maybe some stuff to make paper? For people who want to like, restock the paper used for the arts and crafts (maybe there’s an area where people can bring in their paper scraps and they use that to make the new paper?) maybe a little area for workshops to cycle throughout the week/month like in a library. I can totally see a day where someone comes in to teach people how to make paint and ink from plants and rocks (mostly paint from rocks). Maybe they would also have some toys made out of cloth and wood for the younger kids and like, maybe a little daycare like area? Board games for the older kids and adults, an area to work on computers and study, maybe an area that’s like a lounge/commons room? And definitely an area to fix things, like your clothes and electronics. Maybe they even have a little kitchen area for people to come and go with food and drinks. Idk I never actually been to a community center before 😅
Oh totally!! I think a community hub becomes something entirely different we see all over the place once most places becomes third spaces.
Like they could be a cafe/public kitchen/food distribution space, they could just be a neighborhood library with all the organizational stuff. It could be an event center. It's amazing to think about!
The community center near me, which is actually holding a vollunteer thank you tea today (but it's-35 and I don't wanna take a baby in that) but here's some of the services they already do so you should find the nearest community center and see what they got:
Little library/pantry/blockbuster outside
Fresh veg/fruit drop off is boxes for 35$ from local farmers
Game night - weekly until end of winter (mostly board games)
Movie nights - adult and kid ones (with snacks)
Free ice skating/garden plot when you get a membership
Jellybean dances
It's also got a pub in the basement where they sell a local beer primarily and have pool/darts/other pub games
A shared free circular store where ppl donate stuff and anyone can come and pick up whatever (lots of books/toys/clothes but also dishes and other stuff!)
Yoga, Dodgeball, and kids music classes
And hopefully next year a communal kitchen and girl guide meetings once the halls renos are done!!

Supercorp Artist AU
Kara Danvers is something of a local celebrity artist in Midvale. Every street fair she can be found drumming up interest in the arts by taking improv requests from the crowd and drawing each idea on the spot, from memory.
Most are goofy: lazy dogs with lolling tongues begging for belly rubs, a little girl with a bubble of gum exploding across her cheeks, cartoon ducklings splashing happily in hyper realistic puddles. All the while, she explains the color choices she makes, reducing her figures to their basic shapes, the concept of scale.
She also puts in shifts at the face painting station, drawing long lines so they can receive whatever ornate design she'll bestow on their cheeks. All of them are clever and fantastical-- fire engines turned to water dragons, pandas with bamboo pompoms cheering on their wearer, tigerish housecats prowling jungles of books.
But she also takes time for larger projects. Each festival, she can be found in front a wall of canvas, painting whatever strikes her fancy as crowds gather to watch for ten, twenty minutes before wandering off in search of candy apples and funnel cake.
During one such festival, a photographer from out of town is prowling the cordoned off streets, snapping photos to capture the charm of small town americana. They pause at Kara's wall of canvas, and... don't leave. They stare, captivated, as Kara swirls colors together in amorphous shapes that don't resemble anything at all but somehow convey... comfort.
The photographer snaps just one more photo: Kara, oblivious to the world around her as she focuses on the world of color blossoming in front of her. They longer a little longer, hoping to speak with her, but Kara doesn't look up from her work for hours more, long after the festival closes down.
A few days later, the town paper is delivered to Kara's doorstep. A picture of her graces the front page, but one unlike any she's seen before. Haloed by the lights of the festival behind her, Kara's profile was captured in a moment of utter concentration. The crowd at the edges of the image were hazy, but Kara was in perfect focus.
The photograph is breathtaking. A balance of color and proportion that draws the eye to her frozen image. What catches Kara's focus the most, though, is her own smile. It speaks of some hidden knowledge, of happiness. She can't recall what she might have been thinking about-- all she remembers of that session is being entirely in the zone.
The credit at the bottom of the image lists the photographer's name.
Lena Luthor.
It's not long before Kara's agent calls her.
"I've got a buyer for your festival painting," James tells her, the sound of his smile plain even over the phone.
"You know I don't sell those, James."
She donates them around Midvale, as a thank you to libraries, cafes, and schools.
"I know, but you were already not sure where this one would be going." It's true. She's already running out of new recipients around town. "And trust me, what the buyer is offering is worth breaking tradition."
He tells her a figure, and Kara nearly chokes on her coffee. "Are they insane? It's not worth that much! I did it for FUN--"
"A painting is worth what someone is willing to pay. And that was only their first offer. I could probably broker more..."
"Who is it?"
James makes a hesitant noise. "The client wants to remain anonymous. I've only spoken with an intermediary."
Kara scrubs a hand over her face. She can hardly wrap her brain around it.
"Youve been saying you want to grow for a while now. What do you say to taking that first step?"
She sighs. Midvale is comfortable. Her work is beloved, even the stuff she doesn't like. A precipice looms under her feet, and far below her small fish is about to leap into a large pond.
"Yeah, okay."
"Great! I'll make it happen. How soon can it be ready for transport?"
"As soon as they want." For that kind of money, she'll deliver it herself.
---
The painting is shipped that day, and so begins a whirlwind of notoriety. The picture in the Midvale Chronicle spreads to the county times, and then to the internet as word of her painting's fate spreads.
Galleries all along the coast invite her to show more pieces, and private collectors reach out in droves. Other artists start sending her invitations to art shows of their own, and suddenly she has connections and contacts across the country.
People want to know her.
It blows her mind, but she loves it. She loves it so much that she moves to National City and open the private studio she's always wanted. Barely a week after arriving, she receives yet another invition to a gallery opening, this time for a local photographer. She almost tosses it before she catches sight of the artist's name.
Lena Luthor.
Kara makes James come with her as backup. She doesn't know any photographers, and anxiously worries that her invitation had simply been a mistake. But when they arrive, the other guests smile at her like they've already met, nodding in greeting as Kara tries to scope out which one of them could be Lena.
She finds herself before she finds her host.
That is, on the wall under a warm focus of light, she finds the same photo of her that had run in the gazette. Again, she's captivated by her own face, somehow even more beguiling in a gallery full of other, equally breathtaking art.
"Can I tell you a secret?"
The unexpected voice beside her makes Kara jump. She turns to find a tall woman in a patchwork velour dinner jacket and wide rimmed glasses.
"This one's my favorite."
There's something about the way one hand is tucked into the pocket of her trousers, and the sharp study in greens eyes that sparkle in a smile, that clues Kara in.
"You're Lena."
Ruby lips spread into a smile. "Guilty." She extends a hand in greeting. "Thank you for coming. I was hoping to meet you."
"L-likewise," Kara stumbles, struggling to maintain her composure and not focus on the heat of Lena's palm in hers. "Wow. Y-your work is amazing."
"Thank you."
"This photo launched my career," she blurts. "And the rest... just, wow."
It's true. There are pictures from all across the country. Some are pastorals, but more feature the people that populate the towns she visited. Twin girls busting a gut laughing over a dripping ice cream cone-- a farmer's face in zoom, weathered and creased by life-- a woman alone on a bus bench, tears in her eyes. On and on and on Kara sees life captured in plain honesty.
"That's kind of you to say," Lena says.
"No, I mean it! It's amazing! I mean, when I paint like that," she gestures towards the photo, "it's because I don't see what I want to, so I have to make it. But you... its like you see the beauty that's already in the world."
Lena looks at her in warm regard, her smile turning quiet.
Only then does Kara realize that their hands are still joined together. "Oh! Sorry."
"I didn't mind," Lena returns smoothly.
Kara's heart pounds furiously. Before she can think of something else to say, a suited man sidles up to Lena and speaks low in her ear. She watches Lena nod, before turning to face Kara directly.
She's not wearing a shirt. The lapels of her jacket plunge downward to meet just below her ribs, framing another work of art in the form of pale skin and gently curving cleavage.
"Mingling duties call," Lena tells her, apology in her voice. "It was lovely speaking with you."
Kara nods dumbly.
"Please enjoy the champagne. It was very expensive."
From anyone else the comment might have seemed pretentious, but the devilish smile that comes with it has Kara laughing.
"Sure thing. I'll take care of those potstickers too."
She keeps an eye out as the night progresses, but she never gets a chance to speak with Lena again. She makes some new friends though, and regales them all about which stall to get the best popcorn balls from at the Midvale Festival, and how they'd need to stop by Buzzed and Toasted for the best cocoa and cupcakes on their way out of town.
Exhaustion drags her home before she can catch Lena's eye again. Disappointment stains the thrill of their meeting, and she spends the next morning picking apart the few words they'd shared for where she'd gone wrong.
When her phone buzzes, she's distracted enough not to notice that the caller is an unsaved number.
"'Lo?"
"Is this Kara Danvers?"
"Um... yeah?"
"This is Lena Luthor."
Kara jolts, banging her hip against the corner of her kitchen table. "Oh! Hi! Hi. How are you?"
"To be honest, I'm a little disappointed we didn't get the chance to continue our conversation last night."
A flush heats Kara's cheeks as she nervously adjusts her glasses. "To be honest... I was just thinking the same thing." She pauses. "Wait, how did you get my number? I mean, I'm glad you did, don't get me wrong, but how?"
"Mr. Olsen left your card with my assistant last night."
James is getting a bonus. Immediately.
"So, I was wondering," Lena continues, "would you be at all interested in joining me for dinner at my place tonight?"
"Wuh-- yes! I definitely would be interested in doing that."
She can practically hear Lena's smile. "Great. How does seven sound? I can text my address to this number?"
"Yeah. It's my cell. Seven sounds great."
She'll have to pre-game a snack in order to make it that long til dinner, but she can do it.
"I'll see you then, then."
"Looking forward to it."
She barely manages to end the call before her knees go weak and she slithers to the ground to lay in a pathetic heap.
"What is my life right now?"
----
The address Lena sends leads her to an upscale neighborhood near the wharf. Color lurks behind every corner: graffitied on the sides of buildings and traced onto shop windows and adorning every bus stop overhang.
Kara knows why James hadn't directed her to this area when she'd been scoping out apartments-- even with her recent windfall, she couldn't afford a place here long term. She half expects a doorman when she approaches Lena's building, but all she finds is a normal callbox.
She's buzzed in immediately and one short elevator ride up deposits her into a short hallway left artfully unfinished with polished concrete floors and exposed lighting.
Lena's loft is little different, but the industrial feel works with the high ceilings and simple floor plan. Art exists everywhere Kara as she steps inside: sculptures and beautifully blown vases, and art hangs on every wall.
Including one very familiar piece.
"You're the anonymous buyer!"
Lena looks not at all embarrassed. "I fell in love with it that night in Midvale. It makes me feel."
"Feel what?"
"Depends on the day." Lena tilts her head towards the kitchen, where tantalyzing aromas brew with promise. "Shall we?"
Pasta and wine occupies them for one hour, then two. Over chocolate cake they talk for hours more, about everything and nothing. Lena is smart, and funny, quick to smile and wildly disarming when her eyes soften halfway through their second bottle of wine, focusing on Kara like she's suddenly the only art that exists.
"You intrigue me, Kara Danvers," she says as the clock nears midnight.
Kara holds her gaze, emboldened by the wine humming in her veons. "Can I kiss you?"
"You're welcome to do more than that."
Their lips meet in a tangle of wine and chocolate frosting, and the rest of the world falls away. Kara doesn't leave until morning.

The majority of 2018 I spent educating people about the worst drought in 800 years. The Central Coast listened; we not only banded together to raise thousands of dollars, but we filled an entire truckload of donations to deliver to farmers in Western NSW.
It all began sometime around February, when I can recall seeing an article somewhere about how Australia was currently in drought. My family own and operate Mangrove Produce and Hardware, where we supply hay, grain and feed to locals in the Mangrove Mountain region. My mum had mentioned she was having a bit of trouble sourcing feed, because with no grass for cattle to eat, the demand was quickly rising – and so were the prices.
One night when I was reading statistics and stories about the drought, I stumbled across a charity called Rural Aid, who’d been running their fundraising campaign, Buy A Bale, for some time. The aim was to encourage donors to purchase a bale of hay for a struggling farmer by donating $20 or more. It was a fantastic idea, and I got in contact with them. At a time when they weren’t a very well-known non-profit nationally, they were eager to send me fundraising materials to help raise money and spread the word.
March 2018: Help my Mum & I raise money for Buy A Bale!
As I asked around friends and family, and began posting about the drought on social media, I found that most didn’t even realize the majority of our own state was in the middle of severe drought. My good friend and photographer Andrew Cooney approached me with an idea; he discussed travelling to the worst of the drought-affected areas to document the damage, and we agreed to team up with our fundraising efforts to educate the Central Coast and just how bad it really was. Below are some of his photographs from his first visit to a farm in Gunnedah, NSW, and they speak for themselves.

His photographs caught the eye of Samuel Lentini from Eastcoast Beverages – a local juice company on the Central Coast. Sam decided that he wanted to come on board our fundraising campaign as well, and so – with me still busy collecting our donations, spreading the word, and putting together marketing materials – Andrew and the Eastcoast Beverages team headed to Gunnedah once again, where they delivered a truckload of orange peels from the factory for the cattle to eat. It was such an extraordinary site, it attracted a lot of media attention, including The Daily Telegraph, ABC and Prime 7!

We spent another few weeks fundraising in person and online, when all of a sudden, the national media seemed to wake up. TV stations and major news publications started to report on all the debt, all the cattle lost, and all the mental struggles the farmers were dealing with.
That was when I met a lady named Sara Evans. She came into my workplace at the radio station, after listening to the breakfast shows discuss the massive impact of the drought. A co-worker steered her in my direction, as I had already been campaigning and fundraising to support our farmers for several months. Sara basically said to me, ‘I’ve got a truck and a driver who’s willing to donate his time, I want to do something really BIG to help these farmers.’

We both agreed to organize a Coast-wide donation drive, which was a huge job, and we’d only given ourselves a month to plan, market and collect donations leading up to the event day. The idea was to run a drive-through drop-off zone in a central location near the freeway, as we wanted to make it as easy as possible for the public.
We both had a bit of previous fundraising experience, but nothing of this scale, and we hadn’t taken into account exactly just how much help we were going to need – pallets to pack the donations on, a place to sort and store the goods before they were loaded onto the truck, a forklift and qualified driver, traffic control on the day, a LOT of fuel money to get the semi-trailer across the state and back… we’d sort one problem, and then another would arise. And we were juggling this all while still working full-time. It was definitely a giant learning curve for both of us, but we were so incredibly grateful to have the help from dozens of local businesses.
Working for a media company, I was lucky enough to have marketing materials at my disposal – radio interviews and commercials, flyers and posters, and access to our promotional cars to draw listeners in on the day. My whole workplace was extremely supportive, and I am still so thankful to this day for all of their help. I couldn’t have pulled it off without a platform to send out the message across in the first place.
The Central Coast For Our Farmers Donation Drive was a success – while the number of people we had wasn’t as many as we were hoping, the amount that came brought an enormous amount of goods. There were donors who had collected that much dog food, groceries and water that they had to make second and third trips to bring it all to us. We had local schools collect items, business owners filling boxes and boxes of stuff at their workplaces, and families who had added extra items into their trolleys every week when they did their own shopping. It was just phenomenal how much people wanted to help. I certainly didn’t expect collecting enough donations to fill the entire truck, but we did!

When deciding on where we were going to deliver the donated goods, we had a look into some of the most remote parts of the state, where help hadn’t yet reached. We chose the Packsaddle region, an area about 180km north of Broken Hill. The standout feature of this barren land was a popular venue called Packsaddle Roadhouse on Packsaddle Station, where tourists and truck drivers would often stop to stay the night and grab a feed. The roadhouse was also home to the local SES Base, and Sara got in contact with the venue owner, who kindly offered up the venue for free to deliver and unpack the donations for the farmers, as well as a place for us to stay the night.
We began the road trip about 2 weeks later, with volunteers from Rotary Gosford North coming along as well. My wonderful Dad offered to drive my partner and I in his car, and on the first day, we traveled 14 hours to Broken Hill. As soon as we passed the Hunter Valley region, it was like entering a different country – the overcast weather and rolling hills of the wine country suddenly turned into flat open plains scattered with gumtrees. Everything was so incredibly dry and brown, it was hard to believe that it was once all green. We passed lots of herds wandering the roadside, with farmers leading them from behind to any patches of greenery they could find – the paddocks had turned to dust, so they were forced to look beyond their own properties for food.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The halfway point to Broken Hill was a town called Cobar, and that was really when the effects of the drought were evidence. I almost expected a tumbleweed to roll past as we got out of the car for a stretch. From there, it got worse – we passed countless signs marking where rivers once were, now dry as a bone. The amount of dead animals on the roadside almost doubled, and as we drove the endless, straight route towards Broken Hill, there was almost no evidence that it had actually rained 50mm in the previous 24 hours. Most of the puddles had dried up already, and the sudden dump of rain had washed away the top soil on any spring crops that were planted. It was heartbreaking to think that at the time we were travelling, it was supposed to be the peak season for growth, but there wasn’t a blade of green grass in sight.
After a night’s stay in Broken Hill, we drove another 4 hours north to deliver and unpack around 60 pallets of donations. Sara and I had organized a party for all the local farming families at the roadhouse, and some had already arrived when we got there to help us set up.
The people I met were just amazing – the most hardworking, honest and down to earth people who could laugh at anything. The best part was seeing the joy on their faces. These farmers, they’d been stuck in a depression, some had really been struggling to get up to work each day. I feel so humbled and privileged to get to see first hand these people reunite with their neighbors and friends, some who they hadn’t seen for months, but had known all their life. We cooked them a free feed for lunch and dinner, treated them to plenty of free beer and set up the truck as a stage where they sang, danced and partied on till early hours of the morning.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Most of them owned well over 100,000 acres. I spoke to a beautiful woman who’d lived on the land her whole life. To give you an idea of the size, the entire city of Chicago in the USA is around 149,000 acres – she had 250,000 acres, with a few thousand head of cattle. I asked when she’d last received rain. She laughed and said the last time she can recall was late 2015 – more than 3 years ago.
She had 10 working dogs, and the bagged dog food cost too much, so she was shooting kangaroos for them to eat instead. Each dog needed about 2 kangaroos each for a decent feed, but the ammunition for the bullets cost hundreds as well, with each bullet equaling about $5 each. There were hundreds of goats on her property which she could also shoot and sell (too skinny for the dogs to eat), but their value had dropped to $2 per goat – less than the cost of the bullet needed to shoot them.
This same lady had broken down in tears when we showed her the shed full of donations, because it wasn’t the donations themselves that brought these people overwhelming joy – it was the fact that we had gone to the effort to collect them, bring them out here, and put on a big party for them.
We wanted to show them that we cared beyond just making a cash donation for a farm thousands of kilometers away, we wanted to say ‘we hear you, we know you’re there, and we’re coming to give you a well deserved break from the day-to-day stresses of the big dry.’
Every farmer would only take the bare minimum of what they needed, insisting that there were others that needed it more. It was like a big supermarket; they could grab bags and boxes and fill up their utes with whatever they needed. They put aside boxes and pallets of stuff for their friends and neighbours who couldn’t make it.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Many had told me that a major problem they’d encountered was the rise of bore water in the area. The water quality from the bore water, due to a substantial increase in bores being put in, meant they had to go deeper, and the little water that they could get was full of poisonous minerals and wasn’t drinkable. Most of the money they had went to buying bottled water and bagged feed, because hay prices had skyrocketed.(My family’s own business was suffering too, and we were getting phone calls from all over the state with people willing to travel hours and hours for any hay available to purchase). A lot had told me in terms of food, water and feed, they were down to about 3-4 weeks supply on hand at a time, because they couldn’t afford to redirect any money to stock up. The donations we brought have added another few weeks’ worth of supplies for them and – as equally as important, if not more – a well needed mental relief.
youtube
Andrew and I have continued to raise funds for Buy A Bale, long after I returned from delivering donations with Sara and the Rotary team. We just recently crossed the $19,000 mark, thanks money raised at our local Grill’d restaurants through their Local Matters program. We also raised money through selling merchandise and continuously spreading the word through an online campaign, radio commercials, money tins in our workplaces and articles in local newspapers and magazines.
Despite raising the money and delivering the donations, what truly touched my heart and made this experience stand out from other non-profit work I’ve done was actually travelling there and seeing the devastating impact of drought for myself. It’s one thing to press a button, share an article, give some money, but to actually see the difference it’s making is just extraordinary, and to this day it is one of the most challenging but life-changing things I’ve ever done.
Local businesses are doing it tough and desperately need an economic boost from visitors. A recent NSW Business Chamber survey in regional areas found the drought has negatively impacted more than 84%. Domestic tourism is the backbone of many regional communities, with 86% of domestic travel done by car.
Tourists spent $110 billion in local towns, cities and communities in regional Australia during 2016-17. However, of the international tourists that do visit, over 90% only stay in Sydney or Melbourne.
The best thing you can do to support our farmers is get out and shop in the local shops, eat at the local pubs, and get the money flowing through the local economy again, because the drought affects everyone – not just everyone in these remote towns, but our whole economy.

The most obvious place to find supplies for quilting, embroidery and sewing is, of course, the quilt or embroidery shop. Those shops are either brick and mortar stores or online. However, there are many alternative ways to get supplies for quilting or embroidery. In this article will tell you about four of them:
Befriend a tailor or dressmaker.
Second-hand stores.
Give away groups.
Old clothes and other leftover materials.
I depend mainly on the options I’ve mentioned above. I don’t want to discourage you from going to official stores. Especially the small-scale indie designers do great things for the creative industry to keep it fresh and lively -I will dedicate an article to my favourites later. However, there are many reasons why it is sometimes better to find alternative ways to get supplies:
The environment: Every new item we buy needs to be made and requires resources to do so. It is better to use materials that are already created, be it second-hand materials or materials which had a different use before like clothes. This also prevents more waste from going to the landfill or waste incinerators.
Budget: Buying from specialist shops can be expensive. It is possible to find high-quality material cheaper if you learn how to look for it.
Creativity: Working with a limiting range of materials you cannot influence a hundred per cent triggers creative thinking. Also, I love that each piece becomes unique because you cannot buy the same materials time and time again.
I’ll discuss each alternative option below with some examples of my work. In that way, I want to motivate you to try alternative ways for yourself. It makes the whole creative process less predictable and controllable, and to me, that is part of the fun. And most importantly: it makes our beloved crafts more sustainable.
1. Befriend a Tailor or dressmaker
When I lived in Kenya for the first time in September 2018 I build my fabric stash with scraps from a tailor. At first, they gave me a long and strange look the first time I came round asking for their scraps. However, they gave me what they had and I showed them my work and both parties were happy. When I came home to unpack my scraps I discovered that scraps might not be the right word. Some of the pieces they gave me were HUGE. Most of the fabrics in my Kenyan quilt are from that tailor. Also, there were enough leftovers to give my mother as a souvenir.
The Kenyan Quilt top is finished!
Kenyan quilt block finished
Currently, I am living in Kenya again, and I am doing the same trick with tailors to build a fabric stash again. However, this time I am using different tailors to get more of the African kitenge fabrics. You can see some of my loot in the picture on top. The picture below will give you an idea of how many scraps I already got. I’m planning a paper-piecing quilt with the fabrics and also the Bible Sampler Quilt by Laurie Aaron Hird, creator of the Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt, with these fabrics. It will look amazing and colourful. And something says me my mother will be interested in these fabrics as well…
A treasure chest bag of scraps
The added benefit of getting fabrics through other creative people is that you will make friends. The last batch of fabrics I got through a new friend who makes souvenirs from kitenge scraps. Also in my experience, tailors love to see what you do with the scraps they give you which gives you a perfect reason to visit them again to check on their scraps. You don’t have to only focus on professions though, you can also ask hobbyists. I’ve seen many people in clothes sewing facebook groups wondering what to do with their scraps. You can do the honourable thing and relieve them of that problem.
2. Second-hand Stores
I love second-hand stores! They have such amazing potential to find the unexpected and awesome both in cloths and crafting materials. Plus, those stores are habituated by friendly old ladies which make you instantly feel at home (at least mine where). The start of my first fabric stash, both for sewing and cross stitch is from second-hand stores. Also, I got many cross stitch kits and finished embroidery pieces from those stories, which can be used in so many amazing ways. One example of that is the dragon bookmark you see below. This dragon is created from a pattern I found online. and two cross stitch kits with a rose pattern. I didn’t like the rose pattern, so I used the floss and fabric to create something else. I’ll write a detailed post about this process later.
Finished embroidery pieces add a nice original touch to sewn projects. And since I don’t have the time to embroider the number of pieces I’d like to use, I also save finished pieces from second-hand stores, because it makes me sad to see that something somebody has spent months or years to create ends up in the landfill. One thing I did with one of those saved pieces is making a small material bag:
To turn an embroidered pillowcase into a material bag
Embroidered material bag
Second-hand stores are an amazing source for materials, however, it depends on luck as well. I used to live close to a second-hand store which always had an amazing stock of fabric and embroidery materials. Which is interesting, because it was tiny. It felt as if all the old ladies in my old hometown were on a schedule to donate their materials so I could stumble upon it. Although, it is more likely that the manager of the shop knew embroidery materials sold well in that place, so all the national supply went to that particular branch. My tiny store was part of a chain of stores run for a good cause.
3. Give-Away Groups
Most of the giveaway groups I know are on Facebook. However, I also hear people getting materials from Craigslist and other websites. It serves to check local buying and selling groups and see what is available for free or a small price. I asked people for leftover fabrics and clothes in a local facebook group and got enough materials for more than two quilts! Creative people like to give stuff away because most of them have more materials in their homes than they can handle. My rally for materials ended in my first finished big quilt:
How to make a scrap quilt with many pieces
Finished scrap quilt
Also, sometimes your local quilt or embroidery guild gives away materials during meetings. At my local guild in the Netherlands, there is a table every meeting where people put fabrics and books they don’t want anymore. Members can take what they want and pay a price what they think is fair for the guild account. There, and second-hand stores, is where I got a lot of the fabric for my Dear Jane Quilt and my Nearly Insane Quilt.

Lastly, there is a specific cross stitch facebook group where you can offer a WIP you don’t want to finish anymore. This group is perfect for people who get stressed by all the WIPs they have, but they fell out of love with:
Adopt a WIP facebook group
There are groups like this around for any kind of craft. Google and the search function will help you out here.
4. Old clothes and other discarded fabrics
The last way to get fabrics I want to discuss is using old clothes and fabrics. There is a particular style of quilt called a memory quilt where people use the clothes of persons as a memory to that person. This quilt I’m making for a friend is an example of that:
The big quilt for a lovely friend
The big Quilt example
Beyond this kind of quilts, clothes are in general not considered as suitable quilting materials. I don’t agree with that though, because it all depends on picking the right clothes, knowing the right techniques and the end look for the quilt you’re going for. I love the challenge of making any kind of fabric work in a quilt. It gives the quilt an original look and it teaches you lots of sewing techniques and tricks on how to make unruly fabric behave. And using any kind of scrap fabric is the tradition were quilting comes from after all: in the older days, quilts were made from any old scrap people had. The scrap quilt above has a lot of material from clothes, my Kenyan quilt has, and the quilts below are made from old clothes as well.
The most suitable clothes item is a shirt. Shirts can have amazing patterns, especially the funky shirts that are popular nowadays. Also, they are made from a non-stretchy material. The quilt below is made from shirts and ties. Ties are trickier to work with because the fabric is slippery, but nothing using a lot of pins cannot deal with. The shiny effect of the fabric compliments the shirt fabric nicely in this quilt below.
Using old shirts to make a new quilt
This bird tote bag is another example of what you can do with old shirts.
Geometric bird tote bag
Beside old clothes, there are also other fabrics you can use for your sewing projects. The bag below I made from leftover curtain fabric from a friend. It was a strong fabric, which makes it suitable for a backpack. Especially because I like to carry around a lot of stuff. It was a fun thing that when I visited that friend to see how long it took people to see the similarities between his curtains and my bag. Jeans are also very popular to work with. My aunt makes amazing bags and pillows out of old jeans.
Penguin backpack
Conclusion: And did you learn?!
Now, here are my suggestions to find quilting and embroidery fabric cheap. Now it is time for you to go out and to explore for yourself. Maybe you’ll save a tree by upcycling some long ago loved coats or you’ll keep the ocean a bit cleaner by using the forgotten cross stitch supplies of a neighbour. Anyhow, every little thing we do in our day to day life to reduce the number of resources we use and the amount of waste we create contributes to a better environment. And many small steps will add up into a big leap. Follow my blog to read more of this kind of articles in the future. Let me end this post with some questions for you:
Which alternative ways to get materials do you use?
Are there techniques you use to make your hobby more sustainable?
Which of my alternatives inspired you most and why?
Will you share some of your upcycled projects in the commentary sections?
Would you like to know more?
Melanie Brummer has created the Up-cycled cloth collective. She aims to motivate sewing people to re-use more materials and to buy less new materials. In this way, the creative communities become more environmentally sustainable. Her global facebook group is a good place to start:
Upcycle collective.
See my DeviantArt or Instagram (username: bella.g.bear.art) for more artwork and WIPs. You can also follow my blog by clicking on the button on the left or by filling in your email address. There will be a monthly update at the end of every month and a new blog post every Sunday or Monday.
There are many alternative ways to get supplies for quilting or embroidery. In this articleI will tell you about four of them: 1. Befriend a tailor or dressmaker. 2. Second-hand stores. 3. Give away groups. 4. Old clothes and other leftover materials. The most obvious place to find supplies for quilting, embroidery and sewing is, of course, the quilt or embroidery shop.

June 25th 2018 My cough is getting worse, and I’m not sure if I should go back to the doctor to get antibiotics or not. Every time I cough for a continued period of time, Rina and Abuela come into my room and give me tea or cinnamon milk. I think it is also keeping Rina up at night because she will come into my room really late and give me medicine to rub on my chest or ask if I am okay. I feel really guilty about this, but it often reminds me that they are a shoulder to cry on, even if that shoulder doesn’t understand what I am saying. Their worry makes me feel like I can openly communicate my issues with them, big or small, and they will sincerely care about my well-being and do their best to make it better. In class we had a lecture by Greg after we reviewed our papers over water or smallholder agriculture. Today he is talking about his research, looking at traditional smallholder farming tactics and modernization. Most geographers think that farmers and mountains do not belong together, so the ultimate question is: Is mountain agriculture doomed? There are a number of downfalls to this industry -It has bad soil (steep slopes, erosion) - climate change - poor access to markets. Part of this diminishment of mountain farming is nontraditional exports, made possible by free trade agreements and low transportation costs. We now see broccoli, asparagus, artichokes, cut flowers, and quinoa from the central and high Andes. Later the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act was founded. The people of the Andes agreed to help them with the drug war, and in return free trade markets would be opened to them from the United States. This was done with individual countries throughout South America; Peru was approved in 2007, Colombia in 2011, and Ecuador was pursing one but renounced in 2013 because of the Snowden case. It was rumored that Ecuador was housing Snowden, and when Joe Biden called Correra and demanded that he follow the U.S. orders and allow them to prosecute the fugitive, Correra, being the socialist-liberal that he is, abruptly ended the trade agreement. This angered Ecuadorians involved in the nontraditional export business because it raised export tariffs. While Dr. Knapp was researching the agriculture of the mountains, he discovered extremely high value flower farming, in the greenhouses that popped up around Andes landscapes. They were surrounded by chain-linked fences, and a guard with a semi-automatic weapons. He went to the mayor to get access to these plantations for his research, and they eventually allowed him to view the houses. This floriculture started in Colombia in the late 1960s, and spread to Ecuador in 1983. It was born from a local, grassroots innovation that is now a multi-billion dollar industry. ATPDEA took off in 2001, so now Ecuador could ship and sell to the United States. 2014 was the Snowden shock and end of ATPDEA, but today it is still growing. Presently, there are 700 plantations, with 4200 hectares in 2017, making a billion in exports a year. There are about 60,000 people employed by the industry, usually women in the countryside that are now getting paid minimum wage. Local employment is an amazing opportunity for them. Previous fates for these women included employment as maids in Quito or hitchhiking to America on trains, which came with harsh mistreatment. Flower plantations do not practice land alienation, and it use local smallholder labor, encouraging pluractivity. Consisting of a wide diversity of cultivars, continuous selective breeding, and pluraculture. Water access is negotiated, and this product lacks scalability, unlike monoculture farms. Today, capitalism co-exists with smallholder farming, inserting itself with opportunities for transformative encounters, and local smallholders retain pluractivity. Their agrobiodiversity can deploy aspects of new technology An example of a portion of the flower industry is Babies Breath. Ecuador is the #1 exporter of Babies Breath to the United States. They employ 12-15 people per hectare, and in contrast to capitalism it absorbs labor, but are still capitalist plantations. A local Babies Breath plantation owner practices charity to his customers by donating flowers to United States veterans killed in combat for Memorial Day. Flower farm owners, in terms of labor, try to stay between 7 to 40 hectares, because over 40 it is not scalable or expandable. Several years ago, the American company, Dole, tried to take over flowers farms, but it was a disaster. They did not know how to deal with the Ecuadorian government, labor union, or strikes so they gave up and left. In Ecuador they have many employment problems because it is illegal to fire anyone. This rule is actually very common outside of the U.S., and as a result the informal economy is hesitant to hire people. Age discrimination is the result; young women are desirable because when they have children they usually quit the job, and free up the company to hire another young woman. Typically, older woman over 40 are not hired because they want it for the rest of their life. Before Ecuador established agricultural regulations, plantations were self-policing to make sure child labor and health laws weren’t violated. Big industries actually prefer to be regulated, because it prevents them from doing something that will ultimately hurt their market, for they do not want to attract unwanted attention. Eventually they had county-level regulations, which included the requirement of Environmental impact statements. Recently, Correra has started to regulate the industry. Now they are only allowed to have green and blue pesticides, color coded by severity in impact, and plastic recycling by factories is required. These requirements have been a result of public pressure. In terms of marketing, rose breeders have relocated to Ecuador. Free trade agreement with European reunion starting in January 2017. For every market, there is a different style of favored flower. For example, Russia prefers red roses with very long stems, while China prefers roses that have painted edges. One could compare this industry to the world of fashion. After class a group of us met up to talk about making ceramics on our last day in Cuenca, and going to Piedra de Agua Fuente Termal & Spa around 2pm. I got a taxi with Allie, Griffin, and Ginger and we arrived at about 3pm. This spa is built almost entirely from limestone rock of volcanic origin. Their main attraction is the thermal water coming from the volcano, but our group did the spa circuit, which included two different types of volcanic mud treatments, a sauna, steam baths, contrast baths, and box steam baths. The water is said to have medicinal and healing properties designed to relieve stress and find serenity. They provided us with these cute, yellow robes, and we spent about 5 hours here. During our circuit we met a couple groups of U.S. students, and a couple traveling South America, so this was definitely a very touristy activity. The student group is doing a two-month social entrepreneur internship in Ecuador, and they stayed in various rural houses around the country. They also showed up all their bedbug bites, and lowkey I think I have bedbugs too and am kind of worried about it (!!!). We had drinks at the spa’s restaurant after and I got a REALLY good frozen strawberry daiquiri. Soon I got another cab home with Ginger, Sylvia, and Whitney. Ginger and I got dropped off second at CEDEI and I got home to eat dinner with Abuela and Freddy. Our meal consisted of dates, rice and chicken…I think? Not sure what type of meat it was. Rina was at her Monday night therapy class, so Abuela came into my room and wanted me to help her pick out colors for her coloring book. She said I was getting a lot better and understanding Spanish! I even was able to know that she wanted to color a sunflower!! I didn’t realize this till the end of our stay in Cuenca, but if I leave my door open to my room, Rina and Abuela come in all the time and visit. Even though Rina has been very kind to me, I feel like I have connected with Abuela more. She is super funny, and even gets annoyed about me about things she thinks I should not do, in a kind of “grandmotherly” way. For example I have been sick and I was drinking coke, so she came over and told me that it’s bad for my throat and to not drink it. Also whenever I wake up she tells me to wrap my neck in a scarf, and put gloves on. I think her favorite word is “chi chi” because she always repeats it to me and then laughs. I don’t know if it means that she is cold or she is dancing lol, but I assume the former. She went to bed after coloring, and Rina arrived home shortly after. We had our quick nightly conversation, and she went to sleep as well. I am still coughing a lot and it woke up Abuela. She came into my room three separate times: once to check on me, the second time to put this minty stuff on my lymph nodes and nose, and a third time to give me this breathing mechanism where the goal was to breathe through a tube until all three of the balls were at the top. I have no idea what the purpose of it was, but I had to do it like fifteen times before she went back to bed. I ended up staying up till about 12:30am, paranoid about if bed bugs were biting my ankles, but also grateful that I have the opportunity to get bites in ECUADOR.

Local Flavor
Local Flavor:
Hey friends! Matt, Riese, Freyja, Zara, and I enjoyed our first full weekend in our new home!
We did a fair amount of eating out because there are so many great places walking distance to us now, which we love.
First up: burgers on Friday night at Holy Cow.
Plus truffle fries + sweet potato waffle fries shared with Matt. So good!
We spent the rest of the night working on unpacking and organizing around the house. I’ve been slowly working my way through ALL my clothing trying everything on one by one and am basically donating or consigning about half of it. Feels really good to declutter!
On Saturday morning, we took a nice family stroll and then dropped Freyja off and walked over to the Del Ray farmers’ market! We used to be walking distance to a farmers’ market at our apartment back in the day and LOVE being able to walk to one again.
These peaches were so good! We bought a bunch.
Other farmers’ market finds (I’m hoping Riese likes the veggie burgers):
That watermelon gazpacho was so good. Riese didn’t like it but we did!
This pasta with kale pesto was delicious, too.
We picked up breakfast sandwiches from Hog Haven Farm at the market and then walked home for lunch. I added some greens on the side of mine with a simple olive oil + lemon juice drizzle and some fresh dill.
The rest of Saturday was spent doing more house stuff!
We did as much as we could while Riese was napping, and then when she was up we went to Target to get some random odds and ends, and also discovered this awesome pillow that my fellow Stranger Things fans will enjoy. I was seriously tempted to buy it. ;)
We were hungry after unloading everything back at home so we decided to walk over to Tacqueria el Poblano for dinner.
We started with some guac (which Riese loved) + chips, and then I had the grilled fish platter. Everything was delicious!
We had a bunch of leftovers so Matt threw together a huevos rancheros variation for us on Sunday morning for breakfast.
Also, Riese randomly slept until 7:45 and it was the most amazing thing ever (she’s been getting up anywhere from 5:15 to 6:15 lately, so this was a really nice change).
Post-breakfast we took Freyja for a walk, but Riese refused to get in the stroller (#toddler), so the first part of the walk looked like this until I bribed Riese with a pouch to get her to sit. ;)
We met friends at the pool on Sunday mid-morning and had lunch there – their blackened salmon BLT wrap is so good.
And then we did a lot more work around the house that afternoon before my parents came over for dinner! We had our usual: grilled steak + salad, so I didn’t get a photo, but it was delicious.
It feels good to be getting more and more settled into our new house and neighborhood! I’m actually testing out a new co-working space in Old Town Alexandria today which is fun – before Riese was born I used to work out of a co-working space in Dupont Circle in DC, but since she arrived it has made more sense to work at home due to nursing and not wanting to waste time unnecessarily commuting while paying for childcare, etc.
But now that she’s weaned and we are settled in our new house, I decided it was time to mix it up! It has gotten really hard to work from home nowadays because if she sees me and then I disappear again she gets really upset/tries to get into my office. Plus, I can hear her having fun with our babysitter and that makes me sad! So, yeah. I decided it was time to find a separate space to work, take calls, and meet AnneTheRD nutrition clients on my 2 childcare days per week.
I’m liking this space so I think I’ll sign up – it’s cheaper than my old co-working space so that’s a win, especially since I’ll only be here twice a week! And it’s a really short drive or bike ride away. Easy!
Have a nice day and I’ll see you back here on Wednesday! I have a great giveaway coming for you marathon runner readers… get pumped. :)

How to travel the world on a budget
It's no secret, we love to travel, and traveling can get expensive, especially when you take a vacation with the family. We try to take as many trips as the wallet allows. We are not rich, nor we have a secret stash of money under our mattress.... We budget our money rigorously, so we can do what we love the most; making memories around the world. We have gathered some tips and ideas to help you also save up, and whether it is for travel or anything else you love, we hope you find these tips helpful.
1. TURN OFF THAT LIGHT.
I'm starting with the less obvious, most misunderstood way to save. It might not sound like a lot, but turning off lights and appliances that are not being used can save you some in your monthly electrical bill, especially if you are still using incandescent light bulbs. IF you are still using those, consider switching to CFL or LED bulbs. I promise you'll see the difference in lighting and savings. While regular incandescent bulbs use 60 or more watts, CFL and LED are energy efficient and only use 10-18 watts (and LED bulbs can last up to 20 years!) saving you lots of money a year if you add up all the bulbs in your house. Do the same thing when you are brushing your teeth or showering... turn the water off when not in use. Save money and help preserve our earth!
2. DON'T BE TEMPTED TO WINDOW SHOP.
I know, I know. This one is hard. For instance, I just love to go to stores like Target or Walmart or the mall to walk around and look at goods. Sometimes I do it because I have time to spare, but 9 times out of 10 I end up buying something I don't even need. Even if it's something small, if you don't need it, don't buy it and save that money!
3. MAKE A LIST
My friends will tell you, I like lists. I make a list for everything, and over time, I've come to learn that this actually saves me time and in many instances, money. Going to the store when it's only absolutely necessary was discussed above, but when you go, make a list. Only get the items on your list. For example, you can always make a schedule of recipes for the week (there's another list) and make your shopping list for the items you will need to have all your meals. Also, another good tip is to buy your non-perishables at whole-sale stores. You may pay a little more up front, but will end up saving money in the long run. Oh and before I forget, do not grocery shop while you are hungry! Your list will go to waste if your hungry stomach is demanding your brain to void the list and grab every edible item there is. True story.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
4. LEARN HOW TO COUPON
If you have the extra time, couponing is a great way to save on your groceries and toiletries. It takes time and dedication, but you can get many things for a few cents and even free when you find a good deal. But beware! with this method, you will be tempted to buy things on sale that you do not need or that you will never use! It's happened to me, and to many people I know. Grocery stores have modified their rules on coupons over the years to prevent people from getting dozens of the same item at once, but there are always ways around it. Don't be tempted! If you want to learn the art of couponing you can check many websites that will teach you step by step how to do it and will give you a list (love lists lol) of deals by grocery store. I use www.southernsavers.com and coupons.com for my coupons and information. Using Groupons for amazing deals on restaurants (on special occasions or when you travel) and other services and items is a great way to save some money when you find the right product (but as always, don't forget to read the small print to avoid misunderstandings).
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
5. COOK AT HOME
Unless it's a special occasion, cook all your meals and don't eat out. I think this is what saves us the most money. Note, that this also includes your morning coffee...and nobody loves a good cup of Starbucks more than me! I make my own coffee each morning and pack my left overs for lunch that day. Each member of your family can do the same and save. Just think. The average cup of fancy coffee is $4-$5 (if not more), the average lunch including a drink could be $10-$15. So if you visit the coffee shop and eat your lunch out every work day, you are spending about $75 a week (in the low end of price), plus your weekly groceries for the meals you do cook at home. If you and your spouse have the same habits, you are spending $150/week. I'm sure you can do math, but just to reiterate that is $600 a month that you can be putting towards your dream vacation. -** see some ideas for delicious easy recipes***
6. BEING FRUGAL IS NOT BEING CHEAP!
Maybe it is because I'm not super techie, but I don't need the latest Iphone every time a new one comes out, or every apple device that actually does the same thing than the other (talking about iphone, ipad, iwatch...same thing, different size). Me personally, I only need a good laptop, a reliable phone, and a good camera (for our field of work). If you don't work with technology or computers, why spend hundreds on stuff you don't really need?
I also, like most women, like to dress well. I don't like fancy clothes, but I do like for things to look nice. That's totally OK. BUT I have no need to buy a $300+ purse or $200+ shoes when I can get what I need for less than half that price. Well, if someone wants to gift it to me, I gladly accept it, but I'd rather save my money to go see the world. Material things are just that, material that the brand makes you believe you need. Let me tell you a secret... you don't need that, but you do need to take vacations.
7. NAILS, HAIR, AND OTHER NON-ESSENTIALS
For years I would spend $150 or more getting my hair done every few weeks, or $30+ every couple of weeks getting my nails done. That adds up, quickly. One day, I wanted to take a trip out of town (before we started traveling often) and my husband informed me that we couldn't afford it that month. Fine, I thought; no big deal. But the more I thought about it, the more I envisioned myself with my toes in the sand for the weekend. I also had a hair appointment scheduled for that week, so I made a deal with hubby. I canceled my hair and nail appointment, and voila! extra money to get out of town! This doesn't mean that I wanted to look like a slob, so, eventually taught myself how to fix my hair and do my own nails. Doing your own nails is especially easy when you take your time. I also learned how to give myself a hair trim and how to color my own hair (although this is still a work in process, it has worked pretty well so far). I understand that this is not something everyone can do, but it's a big saver if you are able to learn to fix your own hair and nails. This also applies to hubby's hair and children's hair. I became our little family hair dresser.
8. BARGAIN WITH THE CABLE AND CELLPHONE COMPANIES
You see a great deal for cable/satellite TV. You call them, and set everything up. You are happy for a short period of time, and suddenly, one day, you open your monthly statement and your rate has doubled. You all know this story because it happens to everyone. What I do: call them up and bargain. Before I do this, I do my research and I make sure to have their competitors comparable rates and offers on hand. That way I can subtlety throw in there their competitor's current offer to get a reaction. If you have paid your bill on time and don't call every month with a bogus complaint (yeah, they won't help you if you are a bad client), they will give you a deal. I do this every 6-12 months with each company (cable, internet, cell)- basically when they increase my bill- and that way I keep my rates stable. If they don't want to reduce or change my plan, I will switch to whoever gives me a good rate.
Another good idea (if you are not a super obsessed TV show fan like sometimes we can be) is to cancel your cable or satellite all together and just get a streaming provider like Netflix, Hulu or Amazon to watch your shows and movies. Also, most network channels offer their last 5 episodes of popular shows for free streaming online, if you must have certain shows. There is a big difference in $120+ Cable bill and a $20 streaming provider a month. If you can survive without live TV and DVR, cancel your cable, stream your shows, and save that money.
9. HAVE A YARD SALE
I know this is not something you can do every week, but at least once a year have a big yard sale with all your old stuff. Clean out your closet, the kids's old toys, and all the "junk" accumulated in the garage and sell it out. You can also sell your stuff on craigslist or offerup.com. Some thrift stores will buy used clothes and toys if it's in good condition for a reasonable amount. Do this once in a while to clean out your house, and make extra travel money. You can also consider donating your gently used clothes, toys, and household items to your local womens shelter for extra good Karma.
10. SAVE A PENNY
Always be on the look out for bargains, deals, and best prices when it comes to buying the things you need. Make a list of things you want (not need) and set a separate budget for those. It's OK to give yourself a gift once in a while, but budget your expenses. For things you need (food, clothes, toiletries) find ways to get good quality things for less. Visit farmer's markets for fresh produce, buy wholesale when possible, and shop at specialty stores that offer organic products for less. I find that stores like TraderJoe's carry many items for way less than the chain stores simply because they are not the commercial brands that we are used to. I also shop at Aldi's and similar stores in the area. Save a penny if you have one to spare. You would be surprised on how much you can save little by little.
We are always open to other suggestions and ideas on how to save. Whether it's to travel or to buy something you really want, how do you budget your money?

Kaiyuan to Jianshui
July 30, 2015 (written on the day)
My alarm went off at 7. I actually was able to make myself get up and make it down stairs for group breakfast... but it was only me, Jessica, and Sophie. Little by little, everyone else was getting too lazy to get up early to eat. Our hotel didn't provide breakfast, so the three of us got the task of finding a decent local place to find something to eat.
Luckily, Jessica was able to spot the entrance to a local farmer’s market not too far from our hotel. We walked across the street (through crazy traffic) through a small gap between the strip of stores and businesses. I couldn't tell from the outside, but the entrance led into a huge farmer's market. They had set up all behind the strip of buildings. There was plenty of fresh and hot food as well as vegetable and meat stands.
These were definitely where the locals came. We passed by a lot of people on bikes with baskets of their fruits they had picked. There were families that were shopping for the day's ingredients. We walked around a bit until Sophie found a rice noodle shop she liked. She ordered from there, and Jessica and I got some steamed buns for ourselves and the rest of the group. It was so cheap! Only 1 yuan (about 15 cents) for one bun, and they were big buns!
When we got back, it was time for our morning routine of putting all of our stuff into Dr. D's room, transferring all of our equipment for the work day downstairs, and checking out of our rooms.
It was a nice morning so I decided to walked the short distance to the hospital with FangQi, Jess, Zhangrui, Landy, and Sophie. The streets were much more alive than the evening previous. I'm starting to get the impression that these smaller Chinese towns really like the "the early bird catches the worm" saying.
Once at the hospital, we were warmly met and welcomed by the hospital staff, most of which we had met the night before. At the entrance of the building was an rolling banner of LED lights that read, "Kaiyuan welcomes the China California Heart Watch!" Wow. These people really knew how to impress.
The meeting with the head director and co was equally as impressive. We were brought to a large conference room with a huge table that was able to accommodate our whole team of 10 and their staff, who I didn't count. We were served tea in glasses, instead of plastic cups. They also introduced themselves one by one, making us do the same. There was applause after every person was introduced. Their head director spoke before we started our proposal and conditions for work, and it seemed as if he had memorized and pre-rehearsed it. Maybe he was just very articulate? I'm not sure, but it was pretty professional. Lastly, at the end, they had the typical photo taking with Dr. D and the directors, but they had them take it in front of another room where there was already big screen with a fancy background set up.
Kaiyuan really, really, knew how to welcome us.
We separated into our clinic and training groups. Clinic was set up on the pediatrics and OB/GYN floor. I don't actually remember how many patients we saw that day. Maybe 7 or 8? Half of our patients were infants, less than a few months old, making our job fairly simple. A lot of them didn't have much of a problem, some were just follow ups.
There was one family in particular that stood out to me that day. It was an 11 year old girl who came in with her parents. I could tell by her father's extremely dark skin and over worked hands and her mother's traditional outfit, that she was from a very poor family. As we interviewed them, Sophie and I realized they didn't speak Mandarin well. We had to get one of the other doctors to interpret for us. They had traveled hours from their small village to come into town to have her examined. They were also of an ethnic minority group, which explained why they spoke a different dialect of Chinese.
The reason this girl really stood out to me was because they were so extremely poor (well, most of our patients are) and she was very sick. We found several heart issues on her that were operable. With the funds and resources ChinaCal has, we were able to help arrange to send them to Kunming and accommodate her for surgery. They were worried because they had never been to Kunming and would most likely get lost, they were also worried about having to take time off work, but Shanshan and the other doctors helped work out a plan for them to get her the help she needed.
It is cases like this that make me remember why we are here and my motivation for coming in the first place. She is a prime example of what good all the donations went to. Many of the kids we see don't usually have anything direly serious wrong with them. Our purpose is to find and help the unfortunate few that do. I was extremely happy to see them get what they needed for their little girl. Without this organization, I don't think she would have ever even been seen for her issues.
Sophie and I finished well before 12 pm (our designated lunch hour), so we opted to go get a tour of the maternity ward. Similar to the NICU in Mile, we had to dress up in the whole gown attire. Unfortunately, this woman we toured with didn't realize I didn't speak Mandarin well. Sophie and I also didn't get a chance to really tell her, either, because she kept talking... and talking... But it was kind of cool to at least walk around. The ward was empty (thank Jesus), so there wasn't really anything for us to see besides the rooms and a little bit of equipment.
We hung out a bit longer, finding things to watch in the ultrasound room and the hallway. Pretty soon we went to lunch. Lunch was almost exactly like the day before, welcoming staff, lots of pre prepared food, and toasting. Most of us chose not to drink wine this time, though, including myself. My redness gets embarrassing.
When we got back, we had only one or two more patients to do an ultrasound examination on. The last child was one of those that was so afraid of the doctor's, he'd cry just by entering the room. He was really cute though, a little 2 year old boy. He had been so fussy before lunch that we told the family to go out, get him really tired, and come back after lunch. They came back and he was less fussy, his dad was carrying a large toy truck that was still new in the box. It was a cute attempt to try to calm him down, but he didn't care for it once we got him in the examination room. Poor kid.
I actually had to help with this one, he was so bad. He kind of reminded me of how I used to be with needles. We finally were able to get him to lay still and stop crying by playing a few episodes of Tom and Jerry that Jessica had on her iPad. It was like magic. He was mesmerized by the cartoon. His mom was also there next to him narrating the whole thing to him. It was adorable.
Once we were finished, we packed up and then... nothing. It was only about 2 when we finished. The training team had finished, too. We had 2 hours to kill while waiting for our car that would bring us to the next city at 4. I spent my time working on blogs out on this nice patio they had and watching the baby yoga and swim session.
What? Baby yoga swimming?! What's that you ask?
Probably one of the cutest things I've ever seen. It's an out patient service where parents bring in their babies to be given a thorough bath and let them swim around. Babies obviously can't swim, so what they do is put a round floaty right under their chin and around their necks. Then, the nurses have a huge sink of water, and let the babies float in there. It's seriously the funniest and cutest thing I had seen all trip. The babies are literally just floating heads. A lot of them really enjoyed it, they were kicking and swimming around, one even fell asleep. After their designated swimming time (maybe 15 or 20 minutes) the nurses would come over and give them a good washing. The entire team was so fascinated by this whole procedure. We stood at the viewing window taking pictures, video, and coo-ing over how funny they all looked.
Car came right on schedule at 4 pm to pick us up at the entrance of the hospital. I was confused at first because on the outside, it was just an ambulance van. But then the door slid open and I saw that it had been remodeled on the inside. There were enough seats for all of us, plus two extra! We were amazing able to fit every person and every one in that one van. It was also the most comfortable ride thus far. We each had individual seats, AC, cushioned with SEATBELTS (something that is not often seen in public transportation, let alone used at all in China).
This ride, I was less tired than before. I was actually awake for half of it, but that also could have been because the road was extremely bumpy at times. The road was very wound around the mountains, as well, causing me to get constantly bumped against the side of the van. Nonetheless, I was awake and able to watch the scenery. It was beautiful. We were finally IN the mountains, not just driving through them or by them. There were several turns where one wrong slip of the tire would mean us tumbling down a cliff.
We arrived at our next city Jianshui, our 5th city of the week, and it was only Thursday. We weren't greeted with a parade like Kaiyuan, but the hotel was extremely nice, the nicest so far. We had a western toilet (a valued commodity for Donna and I), a shower that was closed in (most showers just pour out onto the ground and everything gets all wet), a coffee table and a couch, breakfast was included in our stay... the only bad part was the wifi. It was terrible. I had to go out into the lobby to actually be able to use it at all.
Oh well, you win some, you lose some. We were staying there over the weekend, so I was extremely happy about that.
Around 7:30 we went out for dinner. We had to walk a bit to find a Muslim restaurant for Zhangrui's sake, but I'm so glad we did. We ended up at a place that had HOT POT. Even though it was the middle of summer, it was SO GOOD to have some real hot pot. I ate to the fullest I've felt all trip. I can't describe to you how amazing that place was. A group of people actually went back the next day for dinner again haha.
When we got back, our stomachs stuffed, Donna decided it was time to do laundry... by hand. She had brought soap to wash some clothes in the sink. Everyone in our group did it that way, too. My dad had told me to find a place with laundry service, but honestly, I couldn't find anything that said they had laundry service. The only place that had was my 5 star hotel in Kunming, and they charged, like, $2 per SOCK. Shirts and pants were even more.
Nope. I was going with Donna's plan.
We were going to be there over the weekend, so we'd have plenty of time to make sure our clothes dried. They had plenty of rails and a laundry wire where we both hung our clothes to dry. I also felt very safe and clean at this hotel, so I washed everything I could. It surprisingly did a pretty good job. Some of the water I washed in actually turned dark because of the dirt I was getting out.
After I finished that and showered, we got ready for bed and our last work day before our first "free" day!

If you’ve ever gone traveling with us then you know we like to have fun, we like to go to bed early, and we love when we find awesome free things to do. We know lots of the cool fun free things to do at home because we do so much local travel but free things to do in Los Angeles sounded like a joke knowing how much a cocktail costs in LA. But guess what! There are loads of free things to do in Los Angeles that are really fun and unique.
Depending on what you want to do on your trip to Los Angele, our ideas may fit into your schedule just perfectly. Yes, some of our free things to do in Los Angeles are totally cliche but it’s us talkin’. We love being cliche and seeing what the tourist fuss is all about. Remember, our ideas are not all inclusive of the entire Los Angeles area, but these are pretty awesomely fun tips for what you can accomplish the in a weekend or in your afternoons.
Obvious free things to do in Los Angeles: beaches
Kind of impossible to visit Southern California and not go to the beach. Even in the winter you still have to go to the beach. Well most beaches are going to be pretty similar these are our recommendations for where you’ll have the most relaxing or fun experience.
Los Angeles Beaches
Of course our first choice is going to be the beach at Santa Monica. The Santa Monica Beach and Pier are two of our favorite hangouts whenever we go to Los Angeles. Yes, I understand that Santa Monica is a separate city from Los Angeles but it’s still part of our LA trip and time in Santa Monica includes some of our favorite free things to do in Los Angeles. The beach here is great because the waves are a good size where they are enough of a challenge to fight and yet not too dangerous. The waves are also perfect for body surfing. The beach stays fairly clean due to Los Angelenos taking Pride in their City and there are ample trash bins around.
And don’t forget the Santa Monica Pier. We absolutely love the pier for its people watching and for the fun activities you’ll find. There are great places to grab a bite or a beverage, and who doesn’t love a ferris wheel that is out over the ocean? The Santa Monica Pier is for sure part of any fun Los Angeles visit, whether you’re there for a weekend or longer.
Let’s add a few more beaches: Manhattan Beach has tough parking, but it’s awesome. And Hermosa Beach is less crowded. And we’ll add Long Beach to our list too. Long Beach is fun for the beach itself as well as the vibrant neighborhoods close to it. And you can see the Queen Mary depending on where you are…
Orange County Beaches
Orange County is big. True, it’s not Los Angeles at all, but if you are visiting the Los Angeles area you may find yourself in Orange County (hence why this is listed in our “free things to do in Los Angeles”). When we lived in Orange County our favorite beach to go to was Seal Beach. There are hardly any people, there’s parking, the sand is clean, and the water is warm.
Huntington Beach is our next favorite. Huntington Beach has a pier and it’s wonderfully long. It’s great for walking and for watching the waves. Huntington Beach also has plenty of space for sprawling your Beach blankets and umbrellas and again, the waves aren’t too bad. You can actually walk out pretty far at Huntington Beach.
If you don’t mind driving a bit farther then of course you can get to Laguna Beach and beyond. We’re starting to really expand on that Los Angeles idea though so let’s keep it to the north end. The beaches of Southern Orange County are indeed beautiful and the communities are gorgeous, but let Orange County be its own vacation sometime.
Tip: Orange County’s beaches are perfect for kite flying. Be sure to bring one if there is any breeze. We always do.
Free Museum Experiences in Los Angeles
Every city has a couple of museums that are free. Sometimes they’re historical and sometimes they’re art museums. Of all the free things to do in Los Angeles there are several museum options that are fantastic. Keep in mind that in addition to what we share, you can also do a paid portion of the museum space that is going to be much different and ALWAYS worth it.
The Getty Center
We love the Getty Center. When we lived in Southern California we would come to the Getty Center all the time. You do have to pay for parking but there is a train ride that goes from the parking lot up to the hill of the Getty Center, and then the museum and its grounds are free of charge for you to roam. Donations are always appreciated.
Tip: quite often there is a portion of the Getty Center that is dedicated to a special or traveling exhibit which usually does have its own entrance fee. We saw the weirdest 19th century circus animal art once. Totally worth the extra fee.
An afternoon at the Getty Center is great for getting a little art, a little outdoor time in the gardens, and a really cool view of Los Angeles. There are cafes that you can get lunch at or you can wait until you head back down the hill and find some stellar taco truck somewhere. The permanent collection at the Getty Center is fantastic and rivals that of most paid museums you’d visit in other cities. For sure, the Getty Center is one of the best free things to do in Los Angeles.
LACMA Outdoors
LACMA, also known as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, is a really cool place to explore. Inside there is, of course, incredible exhibits of permanent and rotating collections but outside is great for spending some time in the sun and enjoying public art. From the landscaping to lawns, from this huge weird rock that traveled around to the famous installation of street lamps, there’s plenty to wander around and explore outside at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Parking at LACMA is frustrating. Yes, there is a parking structure but if you are a street parker, like we are, you’ll find yourself in one of the layers of hell. You’ll conquer it though, so still go and visit and spend an afternoon walking around.
Tip: plan to actually go into the museum. For all of the times we’ve visited Los Angeles and done awesome stuff we’ve never carved out enough time to explore LACMA.
And right next door you’ll find…
La Brea Tarpits
The La Brea Tar Pits are amazing and are surprisingly one of the best free things to do in Los Angeles. It’s funny because until I just visited, I’d always heard from people that the La Brea Tar Pits are actually really lame and not worth the time. That is completely not true. They have their own museum so you can actually see all the fossils and fascinating things they’ve pulled out of the tar pits, but there’s also incredible outdoor space.
The main pond at the La Brea Tar Pits is really huge. It’s the strangest thing. As you approach it just looks like this nasty swamp until you look at it closely and you can see bubbles, both small and enormous, coming up from the bottom of the pond. These bubbles are methane gas with some sort of tar and weirdness that has been festering in the earth for thousands/millions of years. The top of the pond has a beautiful rainbow colored slick of naturally occurring oils and again, tar.
Beyond the main pond there’s a great walking path that takes you all around the La Brea Tar Pits and you can see other places that the tar boils up. And don’t forget that the La Brea Tar Pits are actually working paleontological dig. You can see a lot of the equipment that they use as well as active and former dig sites. It’s really fascinating. It’s completely different than the archaeological dig at the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an, China but some of the same concepts and equipment are in play.
Tip: stay on the path because there are random bursts of tar all through the grass, some of which are marked by an orange safety cone, others that have a fence around the, and others that you’ll just end up stepping in. It’s the natural world happening right before your eyes. Super cool with kids!
The Markets
Every city has its own markets, whether they’re flea markets or farmers markets, each is different. Los Angeles a few great markets that we want to point you towards.
3rd and Fairfax Market
When we first moved to Southern California this was our favorite discovery of our very first trip up to Los Angeles. The 3rd and Fairfax Market is easy to visit and full of delicious treats. It reminded us so much of Pike Place Market in Seattle that we kept on going back. Each time somebody would come visit us we would take them to the market at 3rd and Fairfax. It was immediately one of our favorite free things to do in Los Angeles. Even though some of the vendors have changed over the years, the feel of the market and the awesome fresh food options are constant.
This is a really easy stop to add to a day in Los Angeles when you’re focusing or planning some stops in Hollywood. It’s also rather close to LACMA and the La Brea Tar Pits so you might as well stop in and get some goodies.
Directly adjacent to the Third and Fairfax Market is the Grove. The Grove is an outdoor shopping center with high end stores, a couple of bars, some restaurants, the theater… it’s basically your catch-all for whatever you’re going to want to do on a day or evening in Los Angeles. And the fountains are fun too.
Tip: if you weren’t actually planning on any time in Hollywood, change your plans to at least see the Chinese Theater or something notable. There are lots of free things to do in Los Angeles and iconic sites are so easy to check out!
Tip 2: Brunch. That’s all. Actually Monsieur Marcel Pain Vin et Fromage is awesome for brunching.
Grand Central Market
I don’t know how in the world we just went here for the very first time. After all of our many trips to Los Angeles and living there we somehow never discovered the Grand Central Market. It is very similar to Pike Place Market as well, in fact much more so than the 3rd and Fairfax Market. The Grand Central Market is much more hipster than the 3rd and Fairfax Market, it has super cool brewery and dining options, and its neons are unrivaled.
Directly across the street from the Grand Central Market is the Angels Flight, a retired funicular that used to cart people up and down the only hill in downtown Los Angeles. Okay, there are other hills, but they’re rare. Recently it appeared in the movie La La Land and now people are aching for the LA landmark to be fully operational again. (apparently Labor Day 2017 it may open…)
The Grand Central Market really is a beautiful, vintage place to stroll through and start a night on the town. And it’s one of the best free things to do in Los Angeles.
Tip: for more fun market ideas, check out what our buddies Tiana and Shannon recommend on their blog, Power Couple Life. They’ve got a pretty comprehensive list for good eats and fun atmosphere.
All of these ideas are great ways to fill your time without hitting your pocketbook. And just like any type of travel, even a free activity can cost you if you’re not paying attention or if you want to dig into the experience further. So, feel like adding a day in Los Angeles to a family Disneyland vacation or a business trip? Of course you do.
Want to pin this for your vacation planning? Go for it!
Free things to do in Los Angeles to make an awesome trip If you've ever gone traveling with us then you know we like to have fun, we like to go to bed early, and we love when we find awesome free things to do.

It has been six months since starting this blog, and now feels like the ideal time to give you all an update and help remind myself of what we’ve already achieved and what we want to work towards in the months and years ahead.
It’s also time again to spend a little more, in hope of saving a lot later. I’m also really keen to lessen our impact on the planet some more and in the process become a smidgen more self-sufficient.
Food, Shopping & Waste .
I am working more hours than I’d like, to pay off our little loan. However, we have found ourselves with a few extra pennies each week. Rather than continue to cut our food budget to the absolute minimum, we have decided to take responsibility and have set ourselves a few guidelines for the food we will buy in future.
Our food should meet as many of the following points as possible:
be organic
be vegetarian (but we’re still eating eggs)
be fair-trade
be as locally produced as we can find
have minimal packaging, especially plastics
There’s one exception to buying local, as I’m not aware of any coffee plantations in Spain.
Giving up caffeine is something I’ll work towards, but not before my hours drop back down. It’s also a bit too cold for us to grow olives here, something that has become a favourite snack of ours.
Organic, fair-trade and local produce tend to be a little pricier than normal products found in supermarkets, but we’ll also be supporting local businesses, small shops, and also local producers when buying fresh stuff in the bi-weekly farmer’s market. Which seems like a good compromise.
We’ve already come to accept that going totally moneyless is not a reality for us, not just yet. We will of course continue to reduce our need for money as much as we can.
And of course, we’re hopeful that the majority of our vegetables and some of our fruit will be home-grown… eventually.
Also, we hope to reduce our weekly waste. Something that has already happened without much thought. 80-90% of our weekly rubbish is recyclable and another 5-10% is organic.
After last summer’s worm massacre, we’ve yet to set up a real composting system. This is something else we will address. Having today spent some money on a decent compost bin, both one for the kitchen and one for the terrace.
I’m hoping to get all those rubbish numbers as close to 0% as I can. Composting kitchen waste and using reusable bags not just for carrying our groceries but for rice, oats and anything else I can find bought from larger sacks. Thankfully most of the organic shops have options for buying these plus nuts, quinoa, couscous and more in this manner.
So, we’ll try to make some sacks of our own to avoid using the plastic (supposedly biodegradable) from the shops loose produce section. We’ve also paid a bit more than usual for truly biodegradable bin bags, made from corn starch[!?] or something similar.
We’ve not gone fully vegan, but are still largely vegetarian. We eat eggs and have the odd treat of some cheese. Once in a while we still eat some chicken too. (More about chickens/eggs in the garden section.)
I’m currently looking into healthier options for our cat, the food we buy her now is expensive and processed. I have found a supplement that can be added to meat. Sure, we’ll still be supporting the meat industry and all the problems that brings, but my cat is a part of the family and deserves a healthy diet.
Keeping Warm.
We’ve given up on the olive oil lamps, not great light sources and yet amazing little heaters. I’ll try to find some way to use the parts and might come back to them next winter. The heating is now off and will stay that way indefinitely.
We’re also using our current small increase in financial stability to invest in beeswax tea lights. I hadn’t really thought about the ones we were using before, it was only when the last batch we bought produced a very nasty smell that we decided (much like our food) to go as natural/organic as possible.
I’ve found some that are sold with the option of not having the aluminium cups/containers. I have actually been keeping all of the ones we’ve used with the idea of an art project or upcycling of some sort in future. So, I can reuse them again for now with the new candles. I should do the same with our other light-candles, but we will use what we have first.
Power.
We found out where our power comes from, a nice move on our power company. Utter transparency and honesty, but not such a pleasant surprise. The breakdown was more or less:
20% renewable (a good start)
25% coal (the horror!!!!)
25% nuclear (oh dear!!)
I still need to translate the remaining 30% which came from several different sources.
Well, finding alternatives to both save money and not use this wicked electricity has become an even bigger issue for me.
Thankfully we have unplugged the fridge-freezer and the only major energy we use is my computer for work. Having eventually failed at trying a tablet and a low-energy computer like the Raspberry Pi.
The other three big items is the washing machine, and my husband’s Xbox and TV. He is very much willing to take on this lifestyle change with the exception of one of his favourite games. I’ve asked him to play less, but have promised not to ask him to stop altogether.
Let’s see how it goes, sometimes he says he wants a new electric razor and this and that. Maybe it’s old habits or maybe he’s just thinking out loud and not entirely serious about getting these things.
Currently we are generating our own power from the wood burning oven and kettle that both use heat to make power, plus the old small solar panels and a some wind-up torches.
In the future I’d really like a small wind turbine, rather than a questionable (environmentally-friendly speaking) solar panel and perhaps more human-powered options.
I’ve decided to donate my Kindle to my father, once I’ve read all the books, as I know he is interested in getting one. I’ll ask that he sells/hands it on in future and so my concerns over its sustainability should have been solved.
Cleanliness.
I have been using soaps and shampoos again, and I did need a shave last month.
I had a Xmas treat of a haircut too. I kept the top long, and just had the sides shaved. So, I can still see exactly how much my hair has grown.
I am not changing my mind about not shaving or cutting my hair, this was simply an end of year treat.
I am reading about making my own soap/shampoo and won’t buy new products. I need to be ready with my own by the time our supply runs out, or go a few weeks again without any.
I am still peeing in the bidet to save water, but once our compost bin is established I’ll be peeing there. I’m sure the neighbours will be giving me some funny looks, but I need to set up a screen for me to also have showers outdoors come summer.
It’s entirely possible for this screen to evolve into an outdoor shower and compost toilet cabin. I have been doing my research into compost toilets. And am wondering why these aren’t mandatory in all new buildings?! Well, it’s at the top of my wish-list but being one of the more pricey items, will not necessarily happen this year.
What about the garden?
I spent the princely sum of €0.80 to buy some garlic, lettuce, cabbage and a little more on a new apple tree, raspberry bush and I forget one more. We’ve planted seeds for some insect friendly flowers, more peas (our current ones were badly damaged in gales), cornflower, borage and chard.
I’m finally getting organized and have began making monthly planting schedules that I can refer to again year after year.
Some lettuce and cabbages I got at the farmer’s market €0.80 for all six and some garlic.
Some lettuce and cabbages I got at the farmer’s market €0.80 for all six and some garlic.
An iris, a survivior from our last house.
Some “Spanish Bluebells”, not really sure what these are. Some flowers we bought with us from our old house.
I also harvested some onions, but have replanted them to produce more. I was very excited to see five little onions had grown from the one I planted last year. Never have I smelt fresh onion before, wow!
We need to get more soil but have plenty of wood chippings left, and we’re avoiding spending money on more pots by upcycling anything and everything that has no other value or use. As part of our cutting down on rubbish, we now only have one bin, our old coffee maker, which no-one wants to buy, joins an old kettle, old cat litter box, mugs, vases, packets and more.
Having bees is a long way-a-way, given finding them locally has proven a headache. My source of worms has also disappeared, meaning I can’t get some once our compost bin has been established. :-(
And chickens? Given we still eat meat, and that I have found much cheaper starting options than I originally posted? Yes, they are back on the radar – but with no clear date in mind for when we’ll get them. I can always feed the kitchen scraps too, but will there be enough for feed and compost?
What else is new/old?
We’ve still got plenty of old pallets and wood to make more things but have no real need for anything just yet. Maybe our outdoor bathroom/screen or some pot containers. I guess there’s no rush to decide.
Sadly, I am still waiting for my Altered Nozzle, the sooner we get this and save some water the better.
We’re ready to sell on more items such as books and other odds, but having got sick of boxes, we recycled or upcycled them and will now just have to accept less for items than we had once hoped.
I’ve been checking through my social media and have lost access to my Tumblr, but I’m not currently too bothered by this. If you’re messaging me there, I won’t get it.
The future?
Let’s just see what happens with Instagram, vlogging and other social media, but for sure I am excited to continue writing here.
As I said, chickens sometime this year and hopefully bees who knows when.
Willow coppice for firewood is also on my list, but this may not be a reality until we have our own land… along with the wind turbine.
I plan on getting/making a camping shower for free hot water this summer, but in the meantime we will need the boiler and gas for short hot showers.
Other things for the longer future that require we own our home, need more land or basically money are a plant-based grey-water filtration system and that compost toilet.
I don’t expect many people dream and wish for a compost toilet, but I’m one of them now.
And of course, more crop plants.
Phew. I think I’ve said enough. Thanks for reading this mammoth post. I’m so excited for the year ahead, and hope you continue to follow us on this journey.
