it's (most of) the books i read in 2022!

i finally joined the local library i have only lived in this town for ten years it's about time and set up my old paperwhite kindle so i can check out ebooks, too.

i was really looking forward to aquanaut, by one of the cave divers involved in the 2018 thailand cave rescue, and to the third pole, and neither of them disappointed. station eleven was achingly beautiful, and the six of crows duology knocked me sideways with how much i loved it. the three-body problem was fascinating. the dark forest was...not.

life has been so rough lately but on the plus i turned back to my original favourite (healthy) coping mechanism of reading and i’ve finished almost 2 books this week. i forgot how fast i can read when i enjoy a book and im trying to distract my brain lol.

still no internet, also I had a bit of a breakdown over our dishwasher today (the damn thing doesn't fit with the door that we've got, but we'll figure it out, and if not I'll just explode or whatever).

BUT. I started listening to The Thursday Murder Club yesterday because it was on my phone and I've listened to almost all the other audiobooks on there now, and oh my god? I love it so much. haven't been obsessed with a book in a long long time but this might do it lol

just finished reading dark matter by blake crouch and wow, i LOVED it. i'm actually tearing up a little, it was really, really good. i mean, from the moment i saw andy weir's endorsement on the cover i knew i was in for a good ride, but it really surprised me with how emotionally invested i got in it.

totally reccommended if you're in the mood for a good, exciting thriller with a sci-fi flair and a really strong emotional core that ties it all together 👍.

books that wouldve been in my top 9 this yr if not for something near the end (spoilers obv. but out of these id only highly recommend the 1st one i think)

bangkok wakes to rain - absolutely just a personal dislike but the near future scifi part ruined it for me

the woman in the window - as before mentioned, the killer was a sociopath all along! hes a sociopath so hes evil! a compassionate depiction of mental illness unless you have one that makes you evil

the majesties - another mental illness twist, im not entirely sure but it looks like the character who commited mass murder had an alter who was good. i dont. think. she had childhood trauma that would have caused did which is what makes me unsure but we all know authors dont care to research mental illnesses they want to demonize (which is so baffling too i thought authors loved researching every little thing for their books. but i guess not when they already have their idea of how something works. idk. i dont understand it at all.). it kinda has me like ? was that problematic ???? is it supposed to be a clever little twist that she doesnt have a murder alter, SHES the murderer? but that doesnt. work. like thats still bad to do

i think my hottest one piece take is that oda's artstyle is really sexist and racist, even though the writing is fantastic and most of the messages of the story are great. i enjoy this story because of what it says and how the characters are written, as well as the worldbuilding and the magic system and what have you, but i cannot find it within myself to blame someone for being turned off of it by the fact that oda knows how to draw one woman and that he does the minstrel lips for every black or black-coded character. literally one of the straw hats has these lips and he's the one who, when oda was asked what country each of the straw hats would be from in the real world, was given the entire continent of africa. all the others have a country. so like oda definitely holds some racist and sexist biases and those will stop a lot of people from enjoying the series and i think actually that it's fine for those people to dislike those things and a lot of OP fans need to chill out about that

Because of my cognitive decline over the past few years I haven't read any books in ages. But I've decided to give it a try again!

I've had this book on my shelf for years now. I remember buying it when it was on the "new releases" shelf of my local book store, right before I stopped being able to focus on reading. It says © 2019 on the back. Just goes to show how long it has been...

I want to get my life back together a bit, so this seems like a good first step. Fingers crossed I can do it!
