tng night SIGH number four. tonight's eps were uhhh [checks] "lonely among us" and "justice." verdict: idk, i kept getting bored and looking at my phone

"lonely among us" was about a little electric thing that kept hopping bodies. this was initially kind of fun, if stupid, because it seemed SO OBVIOUS that crusher should report missing time right away and she just didn't lol

i do like that deanna finally got something to do (hypnotizing them) but it just made me remember that in tos they werent allowed to do that and this hypnotism could have been an email (vulcan mind meld). i'll get there. i just miss him.

the aliens who wanted to eat live animals were like. unfunny. especially when menacing tasha yar. idk, she always looks incredibly tense and it's starting to make me feel bad for her. she seems to hate everything. poor ms whoever is playing her

data's bit with the sherlock pipe was kinda cringe but i love him anyway. i was VERY mad when picard told him to knock it off. you're stopping him from stimming!!! leave him alone!!! also, in the next episode, he got onto him about babbling and watching data shut down in response was SOOO sad jail for picard for ONE THOUSAND YEARS im glad his ass apologized

unfortunately during the middle of the pipe thing is when i found out about the loz movie via destiel meme (ep was boring i was looking at my phone sorry) so i ruined the best part of the episode for myself

i am coming to understand that generally speaking data is the best part of any given tng episode <3

there was a moment in this episode where wesley was once again right and told to buzz off. in the next episode he does something stupid and they spend the entire time defending him. i DONT understand why it always has to be like this. i don't even dislike wesley, i just dislike the way the other characters are written is reponse to him. he's like the theo teenwolf of tng (dont get me started)

big moment in this ep was the potential mutiny. once again it's too early for this shit. i wanted some episodes where they explore planets and fight some guys (like the ferengi ep!) before we did anything deep. i bet if this happened in like seasons 3-5 i'd be beside myself about it the way i was when it almost happened in tos. but i don't like some of these guys yet, let alone care deeply about them (except data, who is my best friend).

next ep: The Sex Planet. once again, it is inappropriate to be having children on a starship, but it is especially inappropriate to send your fifteen year old """honorary""" """""ensign"""""" down to a planet that you don't know anything about except how they LOVE to fuck. the greeting party literally didn't even know what to do with him if they couldn't feel him up. he had to explain in 1987 hays code that he was a fucking virgin. maybe some research besides "they love to fuck here" would have helped with this situation but also "let's not send the 15yo to the brothel planet" would be a good line of thought too???

anyway he breaks the law has to die and theyre twisting themselves into knots over the prime directive and the setup was ACTUALLY almost interesting except they just beamed away with him in the end without finding a third option, which they could have done like 20 minutes in. also, if theyre trying not to break the prime directive, why are they allowed to tell the aliens they're from space and beam one aboard their ship? like, i actually love ethical questions posed by the prime directive, so this episode is cool on paper, but the execution flopped

oh i nearly forgot worf was bragging about his prowess in bed and how he was too much for weak human partners and riker looked SO intrigued which was like the funniest fucking thing. good for both of them. also it was androidphobia that they didn't let data go to that planet to get laid

anyway, as of now, i have been OFFICIALLY DITCHED. catherine maulthots has decided to let me do s1 and s2 of tng on my OWN and then show her the relevant ones so it's time to watch this shit on 2x speed until i hit the good parts

M*leven: a relationship that was never meant to be

I would like to say this is not an attack towards anyone who ships Melvin. I don’t even want it to show up on their tag, but if any of them find this, just know I am doing an analysis and that anyone who attacks me for it is not cool. I also ship byler which could make my point less convincing, but I am not trying to be biased. None of this comes from a bias, just me talking about a relationship that I have grown to highly dislike and show why it has a high chance of breaking up.

With that out of the way, Melvin is a relationship between the characters Mike and El in Stranger Things, and has been canon since season 1. They didn’t really get together until the end of S2 and it has been that way ever since. Many people think that this relationship is cute and yes, it is, but let’s replace the is with was.

Ever since season 3 this relationship has been shown to be quite toxic. I noticed how my opinion on Melvin was positive until season 3 and it’s funny how it’s when they actually became a couple. In fact, I noticed that Melvin became toxic when they got together. This shows that maybe they should not be together at all and that has been Duffers intention.

To show why it’s always been toxic, is how no one in the show has said anything positive about it at all. Ever since season 1, the party thinks Mike has crush on her, but they don’t find this cute or endearing, they mock it. An example would be Lucas teasing Mike about El:

Lucas: El! I love you so much! Would you marry me?

Mike: Shut up Lucas

You could say Lucas approves of the crush, but the way he also went “If you love her so much why don’t you just marry her?” Which is more of a negative thing to say than a positive. I get that this was when the party just met El, and Lucas didn’t trust her at the time. But still, it was intentional. The over exaggeration that Lucas does is, in my interpretation, a way of the Duffers mocking Melvin. Which goes into my next point.

The Duffers show how their relationship doesn’t work romantically. Ever since they have become a couple, they have had problems. S3 is a huge example with them breaking up and both of them not even being sad about it. You’d think that such a strong bond would be sad about their relationship ending at least a little, but it’s not. Even the scene where Mike says he loves her, everyone reacts in such a weird way. Like they think he’s lying.

What makes it better is how humorous their breakup in S3 is. Like the Duffers do not take their romantic relationship seriously. Whenever they are together, they act so out of character to where it doesn’t feel real, which is most likely intentional. Because their romance is a lie.

This also just doesn’t affect the two of them, it also affects everyone else around them. With them ditching their friends when they were going to meet Dustin’s girlfriend and have them all complain about it. Sure, Max says “It’s romantic” but not even an episode later she starts going against their relationship. I feel Max is supposed to represent the audience, most found it romantic or cute in earlier seasons, but after seeing their relationship more clearly, it’s just bullshit and they need to break up.

Let’s not forget the constant Ted and Karen parallels. Which I touched upon here. Especially with the new season’s main messages being about conformity, which is what their relationship is, conformity. These two work better as friends, not as a romantic pairing.

Another example of their romance being a lie is how when they became a couple, they both lie to each other. First it’s Mike in S3, then it’s El in S4. Which actually can be proven with of the most popular phrases in this show “Friends don’t lie.”

Friends don’t lie. El never lied to Mike when they were just friends and vice versa, but when they became a couple, it was all lies. Because their love is a lie. They didn’t actually love each other in a romantic sense.

Now you could say that S4 has taken a more serious tone with their relationship and argument, but the reason it’s serious is because this is where they realize that this isn’t what they actually want. They are taken seriously when they are a friendship. The fact that eulogy played in the background of their argument in S4 shows that their romance is dead. It’s always been. This can also be proven with Mike calling it an “argument you can’t come back from.” What’s something that you can’t come back from? Death. Their romance is dead.

There’s also the whole superhero thing. This has been here since season 1. In the same scene I mentioned with Lucas mocking Mike earlier, Dustin compares El to plenty of superheroes (X-men and green lantern) with Lucas saying “She’s not a superhero. She’s a weirdo.” You’d think Mike would shut both of them down, like with something like “She’s a person.” Or something like that. Usually I find that to be more romantic when it comes to something like this and you have a character who’s supposedly in love. But he does the same thing Dustin does by saying “The X-men were weirdos.”

This to me shows how Mike does not love El, with season 4 proving this even more, but it also shows how this was intended. Mike admires her, of course he cares about her, but it’s not romantic it’s just admiration. And that’s why having Mike tell El he loves her would be more damaging to their relationship because now El has her powers back, so Mike saying he loves her after just proves how he doesn’t actually love her. And you know what? Maybe we should have a scene where Mike tells El he loves her, but she shuts it down and tells him that he doesn’t. Making him realize that maybe they shouldn’t be together, after all, friends don’t lie.

There are plenty of other examples of how their romantic relationship never worked from the start and how they are not endgame, but I am going a bit too long here, and I feel that I might continue this post with more examples, like a part 2 or something. But that’s all for now.

In conclusion, Mike and El were never supposed to work out as a romantic pairing. And they will break up this season as that is the more healthiest and logical conclusion for their romance. Despite this show not exactly being realistic (it involves supernatural beings after all) it is realistic with their relationships. Keep that in mind.

OK why I think byler would help Mike's character let's go

SO we all know Mike was a great friend (tho a bit of a hothead) in s1 and s2 but then suddenly in s3 and s4 he's kind of an asshole (conviently when he starts dating el)

So right there it's alr a clear connection that milkvan isn't good 4 him bcs?? A relationship isn't healthy if u feel the need 2 detach from all your friends and give nobody else attention except each other...

BUT ANYWAYD I think byler s5 would change SO MANY THINGS 4 mike LIKE 1. HES WELL KNOWN 2 BE NOT THAT GOOD AT FIGHTING RIGHT okay well hear me out will is good at fighting and they have a moment where he teaches him (kind of like that jancy moment where Jon and nancy swapped the gun and bat 2 find out which 1 was better 4 them) and WE KNOW that will brings the bravery out of him (ex he litr goes 2 all means 2 save will despite knowing there's monsters and ppl dying and things) a bravery that was sort of snuffed out in the fact that Mike didn't really have 2 do anything after they found el, he just kind of was like 🤯 el use ur powers and she did so he doesn't rly have 2 do any of that anymore BUT WITH ELEVEN GROWING INTO INDEPENDENCE I think it wld be so nice 2 see a scene of him also learning 2 take care of himself and I think the best one 2 teach him that wld be will (showing him how 2 load a gun nd aim nd shit)

2. He wld finally be able 2 open up abt how he was feeling more often

In the show we've seen like.MANY many times that Mike opens up 2 will more often and more genuinely than he does 2 any1 else (including el)

If byler ends up being real I think it wld be so much more healthy for Mike bcs he would be lying all the time which is like the main msg of their group (friends don't lie!!!!)

3. Again I think we would get better insight 2 mike as a person for the first time since s2, his thoguhts his wants, needs, motivations, everything. Again when has he ever had a truly honest dialogue with eleven about how he feels (and don't tell me the stupid superhero speech bcs that was trash), he never has not really. He never tells el the complexities of his emotions but rather dumbs it down 2 😟 sowwy I was angy and that's it

But with will they really deeply talk abt things and admit things 2 each other that they don't talk 2 any1 else abt and having a connection like that be one of the main focuses in the show wld totally let us see into mikes thoughts and therefore him as a character so much better

4. HE CLD INTERACT W HIS FRIENDS IN A NORMAL WAY AGAIN one thing that irked me so bad w milkvan is they are insanely clingy 2 thr point of being unhealthy

Even though Mike and will have one or two moments in s4, this like?? Unhealthy obsessed attitude is still present (in mike at least, el seems 2 be getting over it), all he talks abt is el, he hardly even mentions anyone else at all despite seeing will for the first time in a year (u think he wld talk abt the party more?? b4 el got kidnapped I mean)

BUT ANYWASY yeah s3 was also rly bad w that where he wld just abandon his friends 4 her ALL THE TIME and there's a point where like.you really aren't a good friend if all u do is ditch them 24/7 and they all call him out 4 it.

BUT when el's out of the picture he seems to have no problem hanging out w the party (ex. When hopper told mike 2 stay away from el or else, and mike immediately starting hanging out w lucas and will again?? Yeah)

so I think byler wld make him a better friend as well

This is way too long but I wanted to hear your opinion on this, so I'd be glad if you answered, lol.

Do you think Vecna is going to try to make Will join him? I think Henry/Vecna/001/Mindflayer (God... the dude has so many personas) is essentially Will's foil in the story. Many people think the parallels between them prove that Will's gonna become a villain or get possessed but I don't think so. Him becoming a villain outright makes no sense, unless he's forced to. I don't think he's fully gonna be possessed because we've seen the same thing happening in S2, so it would be pretty boring.

If the characters try to use Will's connection to Vecna as a way to stop Vecna then I'm guessing Vecna would target Will. I don't think he wants to kill him though. This whole situation between Vecna and Will is kinda weird to me because in no way in the story Vecna actually tried to kill Will.

When he took Will to the UD, he didn't really kill him, Will managed to survive while all of the other characters died in the UD. When in S2, he tried to possess him but again Will states that the Mind Flayer/Vecna actually didn't want to kill him, he wanted to kill 'everyone else'. So what is up with Vecna and Will exactly? Why their connection stayed the way it is (and only got stronger as the series went on), why do they have this connection still?

I used to think El is Henry's foil with all the parallels considered between them, but if you think about it Will seems more of a foil to Vecna. Plus, Will and Vecna have this mysterious connection that still hasn't been fully explored yet and they have a psychic connection.

Other ominous things to consider:

1- Vecna specifically targets Will and takes him to the Upside Down. Why did he choose Will specifically, did he consider Will to be like him? He also didn't kill him in either seasons

2- Upside Down is stuck on the same date Will went missing.

3- Their 'emotional/psychic connection, the parallels between them visually, both being outcasts, both being described as sensitive, both being rejected by the society, both being artistic etc.

4- Will literally knows how Henry feels, what he thinks and how he thinks. He can also sense if he's alive or not. How deep their connection goes?

5- Henry probably knows everything about Will too, then. Kinda creepy if you ask me.

6- Something others have also pointed out, it seems like Henry ''appears'' whenever Will feels sad/devastated. Vecna appears at the SnowBall dance (when Will was forced to dance with a girl, and when the literal script said ''his eyes on Mike'', so we know Will wasn't having his best moment at that scene), Vecna appears in the hospital scene when El and Mike are together and Will is kinda third wheeling again, He appears after Mike and Will fight and Will destroys the Castle Byers (this, honestly, the biggest evidence so far out of everything), He appears during the theater when Mike was late to their ''movie date'', He appears when Mike and El ditch the rest of the party in that hill in S3, etc. Why does he constantly appears when Will is implied to feel sad/devastated.... and those moments always seem to be in the presence of Mike? Does Vecna know Will loves Mike? He seems to, tbh. Don't know if the show outright will confirm this subtext but it's getting too obvious atp, so why not.

Writing this stuff out, it kinda implies that for Vecna to get defeated, Will's gonna play a big role alongside Will's feelings for Mike, and probably Mike's feelings for Will.

(conclusion: Will is Henry's foil and he doesn't end up becoming a villain or getting possessed by him because the story structure doesn't make any sense for Will to end up like Henry when they are paralleled in a sense to show the contrast between them, not making Will the next Henry. I also think Will and Mike's love for each other seem to be the key to defeating Vecna the next season tbh.

Yeah, I don't agree either with the ideas that Will would become a villain by choice (I mean, have those people actually seen Will lmao) or that he'd get possessed again because they've already done that. I mean, you could say they've already done the "join me" thing with El and Henry too, but.. I'm almost thinking that's part of why Will has suffered so much throughout the whole series and has never gotten a win because they want him broken down for a moment like that on a broader scale. A moment where Will, for maybe even a split second, might think everyone would turn against him, maybe even for being "different". The two plots for him - his sexuality and supernatural plot - could be intertwined, and self-acceptance and returned loved from Mike may play a huge part in him finding his strength to turn Vecna away. A classic.. Should I Stay Or Should I Go? moment, one might say. Being foils to each other, I could see Vecna totally taking advantage of the "I'm just like you" thing, trying to get through to him with relatability, some creepy attempt of a heart-to-heart, maybe even promising Will a world where he could have the happiness he wants, but that he could only get it through him. Making him think that he's all he really has and that everyone else already has someone else to lean on. There's something about Will we just don't know yet, some ulterior motives on Vecna's part for why he wants him, and that's still TBD, but I'm interested to find out.

Do you have any hopes for the season finale? I saw in another ask, you described the dynamic between rick and morty this season as "very weak, distant, and downright frankly boring" and I completely agree with you! I hope that, because this is most we'll see rick and morty interacting this season, it'll have at least a few moments of what makes their dynamic so interesting to watch.

(Ok i started airing my grievances with this season, which ended up being... long, so skip this paragraph (starting at / / /) to get to my thoughts on the finale)

Oh gosh I remember that ask (I think-). And yeah, maybe I'm being a bit overly critical. I'll probably look back on this season with retrospect, and a kinder, fonder view. Ik androgynousblackbox (think thats right) made a great point about it being the season FOR rickorty shippers. And sure, I agree on some bits, like Rick acting all pissy and partying the way you would if your ex got with someone new in the planetina ep. Overall though, i think my problem lies in that I was enjoying more individual moments than episodes themselves, especially the middle three. For example- Amortycan Grickfitti. Like, I really liked the idea of the Ship getting on a crazy adventure with Summer and Morty (and Chutback). I like the idea of a Beth-Jerry-Rick adventure. But put together, it's just kinda... meh? You know? I liked the first half of the Thanksgiving special... but it kinda dragged on after that. I get that they want to give other characters (particularly female ones) more attention, which is completely understandable and i encourage it(!) but I can't help but find it underwhelming. Like, Summer in the voltron ep was like- girl how are you STILL vying for Rick's attention! He's the worst! Haven't we done this already? (I will say though I ADORE how far Beth has come, props to her for continuing to seeing through her dad's BS. I was worried the character would relapse into a more typical s1/s2 Beth, and I'm glad she didn't). Some of these plots, funnily enough, seem more fitting of the comics (they actually had a voltron parody already). Fun and entertaining for two or three-something issues, not so much a 22 minute episode. i think most of my complaints come from the dynamic between our titular characters- ok, I know I'm very biased (I mean you can see it), but I came to the show primarily for their relationship. It doesn't even feel drama-fueled, just that they kinda... can't be arsed. I'm torn because on the one hand, they're unhealthily codependent and this separation is probably a good thing, but on the other... it doesn't feel natural? I'm not sure if that's the right word- it's like, season 4 had them practically joint at the hip, but all that's suddenly flung out the window. It just kinda feels like this "i got better things to do" vibe from both of them and its strange. The only time they both got a solo adventure (I'm classifying "solo" as an adventure where they spent a significantly large portion of time together, without the other family members) was in the sperm ep and Thanksgiving ep. And, well, in the Thanksgiving ep Morty felt like a side character in his own show, and the sperm ep... um. Yeah. I don't think it's AS bad as people were saying, but I was cringing the whole time (the second hand embarrassment for Morty was so strong I had to turn off the episode multiple times and return to it. It's just like- godammit MORTY). And I think there's good reason those two seemed to be the most disliked episodes overall. They're the ones RaM spend the most time together and it's... meh. Meh? Meh. I don't mean to say the season overall is bad (it has loads of good points, and its amazing for Smith family as a whole) just that if we're talking specifically about the dynamic between these two? Yeah, I wouldn't recommend a single episode from this season so far to use as an example of their relationship.

There's one thing this season has been pretty good at, though. And it's showing us what happens when Rick is alone.

And that brings me to the finale.

"Who is Rick without Morty?"

Well... we already know the answer to that. Pathetic. Sad. Lonely.

This season has been phenomenal in humbling Rick. (And trust me I'm happy for it- every time someone beats the crap outta this shitty old man I'm like YES!!! IT'S WHAT HE DESERVES!). Ep 1 had his "nemesis" clearly besting him, ep 2 had Beth making constant digs (love her) and overall pointing out his extreme callousness and cruelty towards even himself(ves). Ep 3- when Morty shows interest in a girl and ditches him (like seriously it's not like he's moving out, chill) he immediately goes on a bender and develops a deep attachment to the first person he can (wearing yellow, funnily enough). Ep 4, he devotes himself to becoming an "honest man" for his new child, only for it to instantly be taken away from him. Ep 5 highlights how RICK is the asshole for making fun of and taking advantage of someone well-meaning and honest, if "simple", and how literally not cool that is. Ep 6 has his crazy rivalry with the president, and they both get smacked down a couple pegs for that. Ep 7 shows what happens when he allows himself to get carried away, and that he can end up driving everyone else away in the process (lucky they still wanted to save his ass when he needed them). And episode 8? Hooooo boy. Episode. 8. We see a direct parallel in Birdperson with Morty, and the whole "Rick and [insert] 100 years!" Rick has few people he cares about, arguably only one or two that he truly devotes himself to, but when he does, boy does he go HARD. We see younger Rick, optimistic, energetic, friendly and hopeful. And we see all of that crushed in minutes. Rick is desperate for a companion, someone to see the stars with. He needs someone there, someone he can trust and rely on to stay. Someone like Morty. So without Morty, who is Rick?

No one.

And the thing is, Morty doesn't need Rick anymore. Not like Rick needs him. In season 1, Morty was this bright-eyed kid who was new to the cosmos and the multiverse, who needed his grandpa there with him as they explored all these places together. But that's not him anymore. That's not them.

The promo has Morty using the portal gun to go somewhere w/o Rick's permission (i like to think it's boob world lol). It doesn't matter to me as much where he's going, as much as he's doing it alone. He doesn't just not need Rick there, he doesn't want him.

(Also correct me if im wrong but I've missed that sweet portal gun so much. I think the last ep was like- the first time this season we saw it).

Morty's response to Rick? "Replace me!". And wow. Wow. WOW. Morty doesn't give a FUCK! I think Rick thinks that because he's so smart, that he can offer so much, that Morty will come crawling back, and I don't think he will.

Hopes for the finale! Hmm. I mean, I definitely hope "evil" Morty makes a reappearance, haha. I think we all do tbh ;). I want to see some Morty development too, this season has been very Rick-centric (not that there's anything wrong with that!) so I wanna see what's in store for Our Boy. I really hope we get to see the Citadel again, and see the state it's in, but I doubt it. We know something super big is in store, it's just a question of what? Other hopes I have is some Summer + Beth action (please let them team up Im BEGGING) and Jerry too ahaha. I'd love if some other side characters made an appearance as well. Oh- I'm definitely expecting a dramatic cliffhanger at the end of the first half leading to the second half, with the kind of angsty music that leads into the credits (pls that shit is so good (OH WAIT imagine if it was like, for the damaged coda, but like- the chopin version or smth so it could be more subtle maybe bruhhhh)). Ok haha, maybe that's asking too much, the writers made it clear in the story train ep that they weren't gonna do that big dramatic showdown (... unless 👀). Oh, I'd also love some Premium Angst too, like someone getting kidnapped/nearly dying (like ACTUALLY nearly dying). These stakes better be so damn high I could spear a man on them! OH, also I remember androgynousblackbox (is that right? I hope it is) mentioned something along the lines that they could be driving Rick and Morty apart this season in order to have them come back together stronger than ever in an explosive finale, which, I'm strongly hoping for myself.

i wrote a thing about skam couples and if i think they are gonna stay together forever or break up or break up and then get back together (just self indulgent head canons basically)

Skam og

Evak: break up in uni stay kind of on the outside of each others circles still pretty fucked up about the other and actually reconnect as friends while they are both dating other people in their mid 20s, talk a lot of shit out and remain kind of friends for a couple years and suddenly find themselves single at the same time and decide to try again.

Joneva: fuck once after the end of s4 and laugh a lot about it, they end up fucking a couple times through uni and go in one very awkward date and decide its not what they want. They stay friends forever and give each other great dating advice. End up being those kinds of close family friends that kids call uncle and aunt and sometimes get drunk and laugh about their hs drama (also in my heart they are both bi and they are the first person the other tells)

Noorhelm: stay together all through uni still super toxic and then noora finally gets therapy and breaks up with him and blocks him on everything.

Yousana: decide to wait and get actually together after uni but stay real close while sana does uni. Def have way too many kids that yousef stays home to take care of and def argue a lot about more kids yes/no. Elias cries the most at their wedding

summary: troy and abed wake up in the library surrounded by their disoriented classmates with their memories wiped. unfortunately for troy, one look in his friend’s eyes caused the entire forgotten ordeal to play out inside his head-- including the love confession that ended with a scream of agony.

The first thing Troy noticed was the pounding headache. The lights were all too bright and everyone was too loud and he felt like he’d gotten hit by a car. It was almost as if he was hungover, but one glance at his surroundings disproved his theory. The library was filled with groggy students and staff, the hallways jammed by sluggish athletes and a passed out Leonard. Troy didn’t really care about them, though, all he really cared about was the fact that Abed was lying on the floor beside him in a torn up Predator costume.

It was Halloween. The dean had thrown a party-- why couldn’t he remember it? It was all a fuzzy cloud of nothingness; for Troy, that’s almost normal, but something about this felt… different. Almost as if the gaping hole in his brain was made by something other than Troy. For a moment, the memories teetered on the edge of his conscious stream of thoughts, but they were quickly dissolved by Abed’s groan of discomfort.

“Troy,” He whined. “Are we hungover or were we drugged by Russian spies?” Abed’s hand brushed Troy’s as he struggled to sit up beside his friend. “Or maybe the dean’s Halloween party descended into chaos to the point where the government had to get involved…” Abed trails off. Troy was too disoriented to focus on anything other than the wisp of a recollection that swirled in his hippocampus. He felt sick, but Abed made it a little better.

“Abed,” Troy asks. His voice is unsure and the sentence is punctuated with a fitting voice crack. “Do you--”

“Remember anything from the past 12 hours? No. I’m assuming you don’t either, which leads me to believe that no one here does. Usually, I’d be more than happy to launch ourselves into an investigation, but to be honest, I feel like shit,” Troy can only smile at Abed’s ability to read him like a book. It’s almost as if they shared brain cells-- Abed was, in every sense of the phrase, Troy’s soulmate. Something in Troy’s brain stirred the moment the word ‘soulmate’ crossed his mind. Something was lurking beneath the fog in his head, he just needed to draw it out.

“We should save the adventuring for tomorrow,” Troy agrees after a long pause. “God, my head hurts,”

“When we get home we can watch a movie and lay down for a bit, that might make you feel better,” Abed assures before rising to his feet. He looked down at Troy expectantly, but Troy was frozen in place. Something about hearing Abed call his tiny dorm their home struck Troy differently than usual-- he held onto the phrase before looking back up at the man above him. Anxiously, Troy took Abed’s hand and rose to his feet. It was apparent that Abed mistook Troy’s silence for something negative.

“We don’t have to watch a movie-- if you wanted to you could just go home. Or we could make a blanket fort and sleep in there,”

“I don’t care what we do, as long as we’re together,” Troy grins. “And, uh, away from the dean. He looks oddly… manic.” They both glance over at their dean and erupt into giggles at the sight of his askew wig and ruffled skirt. Dean Pelton’s costume was great, sure, but in that moment he looked less like Lady Gaga and more like a barbie doll that got caught in a garbage disposal.

Troy and Abed walked hand-in-hand to Abed’s dorm room, small groups of confused students hidden in the corners as they walked. The feeling of Troy’s fingers intertwined with those of his best friend was both familiar and foreign-- they held hands all the time, but this time felt different. It felt less like a simple sign of affection and more like a statement; with every brush of Abed’s fingers on Troy’s knuckles, something between them changed.

“I was thinking something mellow,” Abed cuts through the silence. “I don’t know why, but I don’t think I can handle anything too intense,” Troy nods, a movie suggestion falling silent on his lips as his eyes meet Abed’s for the first time that night. One glance in the spiraling brown irises his friend dawns opened the floodgates of Troy’s mind. It was everything, all at once-- an overwhelming whirlwind of emotion and struggle and pain and confusion. There were zombies and a hot doctor and chaos and the U.S Military, but Troy didn’t care about any of that. No, his main focus was the echoing goodbye in his brain.

He and Abed were cornered. Troy could escape, but it soon became apparent that he would have to leave Abed or succumb to the zombie virus that overtook their community college. And so, Troy said the one phrase he held back every single time he saw Abed-- he spilled his guts before his best friend was torn apart.

“I love you,”

“I know,”

Troy’s eyes filled with tears; the mixture of the overwhelming rush of the past 12 hours and the emotions that rocked him to his core making his tears inevitable. It’s not uncommon for Troy to start crying, but Abed could tell that this time, something was different.

However, Abed had never been good with handling emotional situations. He did his best, hastily tugging Troy into his dorm room. He sat him down on the sofa, grabbing the first blanket he saw and wrapping it snugly around Troy’s shoulders. Abed darted around the room, frantically searching for something to comfort Troy; it wasn’t until Troy grabbed Abed’s forearm that he paused.

“Abed?”

“Yeah?”

“I--” Troy stopped. He didn’t know what to do. He was anxious and tired and all he wanted to do was fall asleep in the middle of a stupid horror movie next to his best friend, but he couldn’t do that because his hellbrain was screaming at him. He loved Abed, sure, but did Abed love him? An offhand Star Wars reference doesn’t count as an ‘I love you’, although when it came to Abed, you could never be sure. Troy thought back to the night he dislocated his shoulders. He thought about how he acted under stress, how he ruined his chances at a football scholarship; he ruined his life and made the best decision he ever had in the same move. He couldn’t take the risk again-- he couldn’t risk losing his closest friend over something so trivial. He took a deep breath.

“I-- uh-- I really appreciate everything you’ve done. For me.” A second passes and Abed doesn’t react.

“Oh. It’s okay, you’re my friend. I’ll always take care of you,” Abed’s voice was calculated and robotic, but his words held depth that only Troy could truly understand. Abed smiled before opening the cabinet beneath his TV, revealing a plethora of movies ranging from rom-coms to thrasher to historical fiction.

“I went through the movie selection we have-- our mellow options include Coraline and--”

“There is no way that Coraline is mellow, that shit is horrifying!” Troy chuckled, wiping away the few remaining tears on his face. The mood was lightening and the natural rhythm the two shared was once again buzzing through the air.

One day, Troy will tell Abed how he feels. He did it once, he could probably do it again. Or maybe he can’t. Maybe he’ll be a coward forever. Maybe he’ll die alone in a ditch with a stray cat named Doug-- hell, even Doug will leave him--

“Troy?” The swaddled man was snapped out of his thoughts. Troy tried his hardest to hide his anxiety, but it was apparent that he was failing.

“Yeah?” Abed paused. He looked down at his palms before intertwining his fingers in his lap. There were three movies laid out on the coffee table, but Abed didn’t acknowledge them. Troy was afraid, but he wasn’t sure why. It was the odd seriousness that muted the buzz from before. Abed knew-- he had to. That’s the only reason why his mood would shift so drastically. He knew that Troy loved him, he remembered the disastrous party and the zombies and he knew. Finally, after three solid minutes of Troy’s silent panic, Abed spoke.

“I love you.”

MY HUGE THEORY ON EL’S PLOTLINE IN S4

before you guys even start, YES I know that 99.9% of what I say is going to be wrong but this is literally just for fun.

its march 1986, middle of the school year and el HATES school

when we left her she was barely literate and had just started getting accostomed to speaking full sentences, NOWHERE NEAR a 9th grade level, so shes struggling in her classes to say the least

on top of that, she barely knows how to socialize with other people, so shes evidently getting picked on

with joyce and jonathan both working to keep the family afloat, will and el get left alone alot

but outside of the party, they socially have nothing in common

in fact, will is adapting to the new town a whole lot better than el. he fit right in with all the creative kids he met in class, but el didnt mesh with that crowd

anyway, our girl is sturggling

the only time she really has fun is when she visits hawkins, or when someone from the party visits them

which leads us to spring break

mike obviously comes to visit, and el doesnt want them to waste a single second so she begs mike and will to come explore the town with her

at this point joyce is already in her detective mode, hatching a rescue plan for hopper so she doesnt notice theyre gone

and jonathan is battling the heartbreak of nancy ghosting him when she was supposed to come visit

so the trio goes off on an adventure without anyone noticing.......... or so they think

because brenner is back, and he knows el is with the byers, but he cant go and snatch her because he doesnt have the resources all the way in california

in fact, he doesnt have the resources at all. his numbers experiment is seen as a catastrophic failure that lead to the deaths of hundreds of lab employees

the only way for him to redeem himself in the community, and gain his funding back is to present his peers with proof that the project can work, so he needs to get one of his numbers back

el is the only one he can track down, but he doesnt think he can do it himself. if she saw him, she could just kill him with her powers, he assumes because he doesnt know she lost them

so who does he employ to get el back to hawkins? lonnie byers

its almost too easy. it doesnt take much to bribe lonnie, and hey, its not like its his kid. so lonnie accepts the bribe, and goes all the way out to california to find el

he shows up at the byers house..... only to find it completely deserted. so he waits

and the trio finds him there after their day out (why are you here? what do you want? where are mom and jonathan?)

and lonnie, being as crafty as he is, comes up with a good excuse on the fly (hes craftier than i am because i genuinely have no idea what he would say)

anyway, he gets them in his car and on their way back to hawkins

jonathan shows up after theyve already left, and is too stoned tired to think anything of the empty house

and joyce is already halfway to russia

will knows his father. he knows that his father doesnt give a shit about him, the family, or anything about hawkins. he knows that his father wouldnt get involved in anything unless he had something to gain. so hes wraking his brain

maybe.... lonnie pulls over to take a suspicious phone call? maybe will figures out an inconsistency in his story? either way, the gang is onto lonnie and figures that they gotta get away from him and get back to joyce and jonathan

they tuck and roll out of the car. idk. all that matters is that they get out of there

as theyre rolling out of the car, el bonks her head a little and has a quick flashback to her time in the lab

since her intuition is always spot on, she takes this as a cue the breener is back and lonnie is working for him

she tells the boys it isnt safe to go back to california or hawkins, so they come up w an alternative plan, somewhere neither brenner nor lonnie would think to look for them

and while theyre on the road, they stop at a diner to eat (dont ask me where they got the money) and we get will leaving an emotional voicemail home, probably sobbing to jonathan about how much he means to will, which gives el an idea

because who has the resources to help her, as well as a desire for vengeance on brenner? kali

el uses her superb hitchiking skills to get them to chicago

maybe she just has some hints of her powers left, but it isnt too hard for el to find kali

she explains everything thats happened, and lets kali know that if she want revenge, the opportunity is hers

unfortunately, lonnie was hot on their trail, and called for reinforcements

theyre ambushed by the few employees brenner has working for him. initially, everyone is hiding, assisted by kali’s powers

but el knows they arent leaving empty handed, and would rather get taken away then have kali’s freedom taken from her

so el reveals herself, followed by mike because he wont leave her, followed by will because he wont leave mike

all three get taken away, back to hawkins lab, but now kali is even more motivated to bring down the lab once and for all

so kali and her gang get to hawkins, almost simultaniously with jonathan, who has been looking for his family in a frenzy since the morning he woke up to find eveyone gone, without even a note or a phone call, as well as argyle, who came along for the ride

the video store is being used as home base this season, so thats the first place they go, where they find steve, shortstaffed and not knowing whats going on because the whole team ditched him

they catch him up to speed on how EVERYONES GONE and steve catches them up to speed on how EVERYONE IS GETTING MURDERED

meanwhile, brenner has three predicaments

1) no matter what he does to el, what kind of torture he inflicts, she isnt using her powers because she doesnt have them. she tells him this several times. he refuses to believe it

2) lonnie byers is demanding his payment, which he didnt recieve because the deal was that he bring el to them, and he couldnt even do that

3) he has to find a way to dispose of mike and will, who he had no intention of bringing into the lab but theyre here and they know everything

and this is the moment where mike screws up by letting them know that people know theyre in the lab and people know about all the experiments and any second now, someones gonna come banging that door down to save us. nancy, jonathan, steve, robin max, lucas, dustin, kali-

and the second mike says her name he knows he screwed up

brenner decides in that moment that all he can do is round up everyone involved and get rid of them. conveniently, the string of murders occurring will serve as a good cover for what happened to them

and this is the part where joyce, murray, and hopper get back to hawkins

this is also the part where nancy and robin and the gang get back to hawkins

so nancy and robin immediately go to the video store armed with all the new information they learned from victor creel

..... and are met with jonathan, argyle, kali, and steve in pandemonium

they close the store for the day, and get ready to storm the lab

they realize that they need something from the school, so they head there to pick it up

and soon after arriving, theyre met with the all to familiar hawkins lab vans

they make a hasty escape, taking out some of the goons but they need to find a way to get the rest off their trail

they head for the woods, hoping to hide out in the cabin

meanwhile, the russia crew has taken the mostly demolished cabin as their haven to recover from whatever injuries they sustained

theyre all running through the woods, but they realize the people from the lab are closing in on them

and then nancy and jonathan pass a very familiar tree

they use whatever weapon they have on them to break through the bark, and head into the upside down

the lab people keep going into the woods, eventually finding hopper’s cabin

epic showdown between the russia crew and the lab people, joyce, murray and hopper win, they realize the lab is back, immediately head there realizing theyre gonna have to rescue someone

nancy and robin use the info they learned from victor creel to keep the gang alive in the upside down, max, argyle and eddie are freaking out because omg we’re in another dimention, we get some big reveal about the truth about the upside down and the gang makes their way out and head to the lab

and while this is all happening,we get some super emotional monologue between brenner and el (ala-the last 10 minutes of the truman show) and brenner realizes that el isnt going to be the naieve superweapn she used to be, and decides the best thing he can do with el is give her the standard punishment, time in the closet

and being in the closet triggers all sorts of flashbacks and emotions (mbb’s opportunity to show off her acting chops for an emmy)

joyce and hopper bust into the lab like they did in season 1, but this time they dont get caught

they decide to split up to cover more ground, and hopper finds el in the closet

and around the same time joyce finds mike and will and gets them out of there

here comes the REAL emotional performance

hopper sees her, we get a teary eyed “el!” “dad!”, and then hopper gets pulled away from el by lab workers

exactly the same way terry did

we’re watching this happen from el’s perspective, with a heart-wrenching “noooooooooo” from el, accompanied by cuts to every time el has had to be separated from someone she cares about (terry, the s1 ending, billy dying, her leaving kali in s2, saying goodbye to everyone on moving day, her being separated from mike and will when they got to the lab) accompanied by some terribly sad 80s song, then back to the present moment, she reaches her hand out and boom, the guards go flying. her powers are back

except she doesnt have control of them the way she did before, and now shes bringing the whole building down

her and hopper race to the the first floor, and meet joyce and the boys, they get out of the building at the very last second, and the whole thing collapses.

eventually they find the other group, the whole team is now together, they go and take down the big bad from the upside down, joyce almost KILLS lonnie

nancy and robin drop a huge bombshell that has to do with hawkins/the upside down, specifically pertaining to el, which they pieced together after talking to victor creel

we get a massive cliffhanger, season 5 starts like 10 minutes after the ending of season 4

Okay start us out with those Magicians Opinions!

the first character i ever fell in love with: LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT QUENTIN COLDWATER. Okay, but yeah, they really introduced him in a way that worked-worked for me – that whole opening sequence that cuts between Quentin being tense and closed-off and miserable in this hollow, almost angry way in the office of the hospital, and Quentin trying to act normal at a party, making wan jokes while the misery and the anger leaks out of him and makes him just so unpalatable to be around – I mean, Jason Ralph just takes the character by the throat instantly and Goes There. I remember thinking as I was watching it that this was the first “anxious nerd dude” character I'd ever seen who wasn't being framed as actually funny/weird/charming/vulnerable/the clear audience stand-in, but framed as if he were a real person who's really eaten up by depression and self-loathing, and just as off-putting as that is in real life. I vividly remember just having that reaction of, “Oh. This is about someone who's really hanging on by his fingernails, not just Hollywood Depressed,” and latching on so hard, because I needed to see that so much, and I needed to root for him to find his reason, not in spite of but because as a character he was resistant to being liked by other people, by the audience. It's not loveable and charming, to hate yourself, to find your life barely tolerable. It's not a position from which it's easy to see your way forward, and to me Quentin is the most honest expression of that reality that I had ever seen in genre tv. So like, I get why some people didn't like him in first season – he's intentionally tough to like – but I was ultra-invested from minute one, and literally everything he ever said or did made me love him more.

a character that i used to love/like, but now do not: I think I was kind of intrigued by Fen early on – I liked the idea that she was this naive fairy-tale girl who was going to have this harsh awakening when her Destined Prince turned out to be a real person who couldn't fulfill her fantasies, who was going to have to figure out who she was beyond “going to marry the king someday.” That seemed like an interesting arc, and here and there they were kind of doing it – I love the realpolitik she occasionally comes out with, particularly that one scene on the boat when she's like, “The dipshits from my hometown are going to execute me because of you, so sticking with you is kind of my only option and that's just happening.” But then...I don't know, she's really irritating, and they got this weird thing in their heads where her problem is that Eliot sucks, instead of that being The Girl Who Will Marry the King Someday is a sucky role to be forced into making a real life out of, and I just gave up trying to like her eventually.

a ship that i used to love/like, but now do not: I liked Penny/Kady all right, until they started doing the weird thing where “in Doomed Love with Penny” was Kady's only emotional arc, like – they actually had her say that all she ever cared about was being Penny's girlfriend, and that's the kind of thing that kind of retroactively ruins the pairing for me.

my ultimate favorite character™: So after everything I said up top – it's actually Eliot. That snuck up on me! And my love for Quentin never went away, not by any means, but. God, Eliot.

prettiest character: If I try to take an objective stance, I'd say it's probably Margo? Like, she's just unearthly beautiful. But there's something about Jason Ralph's goddamn face that – I don't know, it just enthralls me; he does okay-ish at playing Normal-Looking for TV, but also if I look at him for too long it kind of hurts, he's so stupidly gorgeous.

my most hated character: Hyman. And I thought we were supposed to hate Hyman, but then season 5 allegedly happened, and everyone was like, aw, Hyman's okay! But – no he's not? He's obviously not okay? He deeply sucks? Ugh, season 5.

my OTP: Hi, I'm Milo, and welcome to my Tumblr. But yeah, it's Quentin/Eliot, canonical soulmates and The Ditch I Will Die In.

my NOTP: You know, they kind of wore me down to the point of “fine, what the fuck ever,” but I still don't support Margo/Josh. It's bad, it's a bad relationship, it was a bad idea.

favorite episode: I really love Be the Penny, but the actual answer is Escape From the Happy Place. I feel allegiance to Be the Penny, I have not a negative word to say about it, but Escape from the Happy Place is just a level beyond, it's astonishingly good.

saddest death: This question is a microaggression and I will not stand for it.

favorite season: I'm about to break your brain, but – it's 4! It's season 4! I fucking love the first ten episodes of s4! I love the Monster, I love Bad News Bear, I love Hard Glossy Armor, I love fucking Santa Claus. I think s4 has this great propulsive energy where the rest of the series has always been plagued by a tendency to kind of throw everything at the wall and see if anything sticks, the stakes are clear, the external villain and the emotional stuff work together for once, everyone's performances are so strong. The collapse at the end feels so appalling to me in part because I was totally on the ride for most of the season.

least favorite season: I mean, it's season 5, but it didn't have to be. I was never going to get over Quentin's death, per se, but I think there were ways to structure the next season that would've been workable, and honestly there are things about s5 that I do like. I watched most of 5 feeling like it was – messy, but messy in the same way that s2 was messy, the same way The Magicians has always been a little messy, and it wasn't until the end when I really just threw up my hands and was like, okay, I get it, there was never a plan, none of this was going anywhere. God, the last couple of episodes still frustrate me so much, because right up until that point, there was still time to salvage a lot of character work, but nope!

character that everyone else in the fandom loves, but i hate: So I don't hate her, and in fact I came to kind of like her eventually, but I did actively hate Julia for a long, long time. Just. Like, she really – pushes my buttons in a very specific way, and if she were a real person I would absolutely love myself by having as little contact as possible with Julia, but because everyone except me loves her so much, I really kind of forced myself to delve into her and try to see what people liked about her, and I do think it was a pretty successful project. I would definitely say at this point that I appreciate Julia as a character, and I have a pretty good sense of what Stuff she activates in me that produces that ruffled reaction, which has allowed me to go beyond Julia Sucks Actually to This Character Is Not Really For Me. I love and support the 98% of fandom who like Julia! In my way, I love and support Julia! But kind of like – a sibling you're sort of forced to into a relationship with, that you love even though they drive you crazy and you're not too sure you will really ever like them.

my ‘you’re piece of trash, but you’re still a fave’ fave: The Monster. I mean, it's not that I wanted a redemption arc for him or anything (although @portraitofemmy has always been onto something with the idea that if the Monster is essentially a child, allowing Quentin to save the world by parenting him would've been a pretty clever payoff for long-term arcs), he's just the kind of villain that is just endlessly fun to watch.

my ‘beautiful cinnamon roll who deserves better than this’ fave: I mean, that's a pretty succinct summary of the entire Eliot Waugh Experience.

my ‘this ship is wrong, nasty, and makes me want to cleanse my soul, but i still love it’ ship: With the caveat that I still don't believe in guilt because these are just imaginary people in imaginary stories, I definitely still think there's a great romantic tragedy right there for the taking with Eliot/Seb. I wouldn't say the show should have done it, because that would obviously have been just a very different direction than they intended to go, but as a non-canonical ship, I think it's so potentially rich, and someday I'm going to have time to go back to that story I was writing about them, whether or not anyone else ever gives a shit about it.

my ‘they’re kind of cute, and i lowkey ship them, but i’m not too invested’ ship: I never could figure out what people's issue was with Julia/Penny23, they seemed to make each other happy. He was a sweet, supportive dude, and I like their little Wild Thornberrys Interdimensional Adventurers family at the end, although I wish they'd done it on purpose, because “guess what life-changing thing is happening to Julia's body without her consent this week!” was not a well the writers needed to go back to, in my opinion. But I like the idea that Julia ends up with a good guy and a magic kid and is off doing quests and shit, the whole shebang, I thought that was a nice ending. For whatever that's worth, and I imagine that from the perspective of a real Julia fan, my opinion at this point is not worth much!

i owe y’all a skames s2 review. here it is

(bonus: s1 review?)

alright, i did a s1 review back before these were a thing so it’s wonkier than usual, and having watched og s1 after that i have a couple more things to say about skames s1, so here i go:

there are two major changes that really help to make jorge nicer than jonas and show that he really cares about eva. the first and biggest one is that jorge isn’t going to inés’ house to smoke weed with her brother, but to get a fake id as a surprise for eva’s birthday. that gives him a reason to “lie” to her beyond “blah blah i know you’d make a big deal out of that”, and while he should’ve told her the truth so she wouldn’t freak out and think he was cheating, his reason is way more understandable and after all, it is a gesture of love to gift her a fake id. the other one is the cabin episode, that thank god was moved to the second half of the season - i’ve always thought it drags things down and it’s kind of underwhelming on the big scheme of things. first off, it’s lucas who lends them the cabin so they can be alone, but then it’s also there where lucas’ parents fight and his dad leaves and jorge tells eva that it would be unfair to kick lucas out of his house when he’s going through such a rough patch (instead of bringing friends in a intimate vacation which he knows his girlfriend really cares about), which he’s right about and makes the whole thing more nuanced. it’s also a great moment in eva’s development because she ditches going with the girls to zaorejas just to be with jorge, and she ends up resenting him for sticking to his friends for what happened to lucas, but it was her choice to choose him over her friends, but eva snaps at jorge for never showing remorse as he pretty much ditches her... it makes it equally as messy but more balanced for both.

i feel like the writers took a look at eva and noora heart eyeing each other on episode three and were like “yeah... we can’t have that”. the addition of lara is a cute subversion and makes the cheating-on-jonas plotpoint better because eva is friendly with the girl involved on the final end of this... love square? lmao. even though nora appears way later than the rest of the girls, they clearly click immediately and noreva is one of the most precious friendships within skames and that’s saying a lot. also, giving cris the scene where she drunkenly makes out with a girl at a party and then making cris go through a sexuality discovery journey is such a power move LOL

skames reaaally went out of their way to make amira very different than og sana. i like the change tbh, but it makes me worried to their approach to amira’s season soon, because amira pretty much behaves according to the lesson sana “learnt” at the end of her season, which is not to think that everyone is automatically attacking her because of her religion and they’re just curious/ignorant instead. but i do like that since we’ve got rid off most of sana’s nagging to vilde, the girls simply don’t take viri all that seriously and since she’s infuriating during s1 i’m alright with it.

aaaand i would slightly improve their score to 8/10. okay i’m done. now, what you all are here for...

what did skames s2 do better than og?

mentioned this on my skamfr s3 review but i fail to see an immediate chemistry between isak and even in their first encounters, which makes their coming together a bit rushed. however skames greatly increases their chances by having cris meet joana in the very first day of the season, and by working together on class they also have more scenes to show a lot of playful banter as well as their infinite romantic staring. things like that make me believe that joana and cris would be friends if they weren’t into each other, which i couldn’t say for sure for isak and even.

idk, does this even count as better than og? but amira is such a good jonas, and they adapt that role to her character so well. while i thought that waiting for isak to come at him and calmly accept his identity and then offer advice was super in character of jonas, amira confronting cris after she lies to her multiple times because she thinks that she doesn’t want to be her friend anymore fits them perfectly. this also makes it so that cris has someone to lean on as she begins to have problems with joana pretty early on, and not on episode 7.

(tw suicide) i love that joana gets to tell cris herself that she has bpd and both eloy and her parents respect that part of her life: she is the one who tells cris about her own issues. crucial moments regarding joana’s mental illness are handled in such a idk, such a respectful way? i feel like other remakes would’ve capitalized so hard on those dramatic moments, like making eloy yell at cris that joana is ill, or idk cris overhearing joana’s parents talk about her attempted suicide before they see her on the hallway, or even making joana tell cris that she attempted to kill herself as a big dramatic finale of episode 9. but skames handled all of that with a lot of care.

i always thought that the thing about isak choosing to be with even because he loves him but he also wants to live a fulfilling life and not a fake one always felt poorly executed - like if you were really looking for it you could find it, and i think that’s done better with cris. from the moment where dani tells cris that she needs to start thinking about the consequences of her actions and that she can’t basically joke her way through her problems, to cris saying that she doesn’t feel capable of being a good girlfriend to joana because she’s only the funny party friend of the group, all of that is well established and followed through and it’s cris’ character growth that leads the couple to be together at the end. and at the same time there’s a great job done with joana’s insecurities. from the cuddling clip where she implies that there’s no one whom she can count on, that everyone runs away from her, from cris promising that she wouldn’t run away and even when joana pushed her from her life cris still wanted to be with her... i just love that both of their insecurities are so personal to them but they challenge and better each other by being together, joana by realizing that cris won’t leave her alone and that she can open up and give love and be loved in returned, and cris by realizing that she is strong enough to be with someone and can take responsibility of her life and actions. i also love that the girl squad tend to challenge those insecurities too - especially cris’s, when nora suggests that cris isn’t ready to be with someone with bpd and then viri or when viri says that joana broke up with cris to protect her. it’s all sooo well done and i love that it all comes back to the “minute by minute” clip the end. it’s such a nice way to balance their personal issues with what can they bring to each other in a relationship, and after they’ve passed through them they can get together and have a stable relationship. *insert lady gaga gif*

relating to that point: making joana tell cris about having bpd in ep 7 instead of 8 makes more space to have compelling drama about their relationship rather than holding off to that dramatic revealing two episodes before the season ends.

so, which is the remake that will look at the gigantic mess that is noorhelm and say “sigh, let’s fix this shit”? of course it’s skames. i love that they made use of them swapping s2 and s3, by making nora and alejandro become friends off-screen (maybe that ride home in the new years clip was the start of it all!) and then follow through that during the season. like yeah alejandro was kinda shitty on s1, but fast forward to s2 and he’s a) no longer chasing nora romantically and b) no longer being an asshole to the girl group, esp viri. him trying to move on with inés is the moment where i said “wait, maaaaybe he’s not all that bad” and has only gone uphill since then. he’s on friendly terms with viri, even when she’s still crushing on him - but there’s never malicious intent behind that and there comes a point that viri realizes that it’s all one sided and it’s very unlikely to happen. then, moments like nora telling alejandro that he only wants to be with her because he feels entitled to her romantic companion is such a cathartic moment for me, an anti noorhelm - even though i do think that alejandro really really still liked her, breaking up with inés and expecting nora to get with him immediately was a dick’s move anyways. still, he shows the most growth any william has ever shown (well ignoring druck, wtfock, nl and austin bc i haven’t seen those yet) in a season that isn’t even his. my main problem with s2 is that yes noora is romantically interested with william but there’s never enough time to make that happen naturally so william speeds things up by blackmailing her to a date and being the abusive manipulative shitty person he’s for the rest of the season. skames really understood how to make an enemies-to-friends-to-lovers trope right, and erase most (all?) of alejandro’s toxic traits in the process.

i love lucas as an eskild. i said this before on an ask i got some time ago, but cris and lucas have what’s either a direct or unintentional parallel to the s4 bench scene. however the scene just works a lot better because lucas can directly empathize with the discrimination cris’ receives and give her support and love when she needs it the most, and therefore the convo doesn’t lean to the side of almost-distasteful but as a beautiful wlw/mlm bonding moment. also, lucas is like the first non creepy eskild i encounter in the skamverse and for that i’m very thankful.

rubén is a great improvement from the source material. because he’s a bit older than cris, that gives him more maturity that also challenges cris’ insecurities and inability to face her problems all by herself, as well as her sexuality journey. they could’ve easily made him into a one dimensional creep but he’s a decent guy who seems to like cris enough, and without being mean he lets cris know that she needs to be honest with him about her feelings. i was on the fandom around the time s2 aired and everyone seemed to hate him so much - i could never get behind that because cris used him as a tool to get joana jealous and then ghosted him, and like it’s not farfetched to think that he would want an explanation, right? and rubén wasn’t like, 24 years old or whatever. he was one grade above cris, according to s1... max one or two years older than her and the girls.

there’s this tiny meta commentary about “blue is the warmest color” and how the male gaze affects wlw representation that i can totally get behind. mentioning the song and movie at the beginning, just for the show to never put cris and joana in super heated, half-naked situations is just such a win!!! the most that they do is make up heatedly for some seconds with their clothes on and mentions of off-screen sex, which is so great. despite cris being the most established sex crazed isak, they never go through the lengths of framing their relationship for male consumption and most of the interactions between the main couple are like, soft and tender. and when the rumors about her relationship spread, some of them are male classmates expressing that they want to see them both together, and cris obviously reacts badly to that. as someone who hates that last scene with the dance girls, where they basically say they like isak now because they’re into two hot guys kissing each other and whatnot and there’s never a critic about it, i felt pretty satisfied with how it was handled on this season - and like, the dance girls commentary was pretty much a reality with the perception of evak in the fandom irl, so.

uh, as a non-muslim girl, maybe this is not entirely my place to speak about it but i enjoyed the little exposition things amira said about ramadán and her religion. in og/other remakes it’s through the vilde’s casual islamophobia that sana gets to explain more about her religion and culture, but the concern of the girls seem to come from a place of curiosity and respect for their friend. it was also good that cris to stand up for amira when her mother was being islamophobic (i think it’s all great buildup for amira’s season), and making an iftar for her was such a sweet way of closing the season while thanking her for being the absolute GOAT that she was during the season.

what did skames do worse than og?

why isn’t cris a lesbian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! look, all the hints were there. s1 cris could not even fathom being in a relationship w someone whenever she imagined a guy. joana is the first girl she was ever attracted to and look at how that ended up. and like, all that compulsory heterosexuality, s1 cris commenting on how fuckable jorge is and nonchalantly hooking up with guys and telling them she wanted nothing more, then on s2 hooking up with rubén because it’s what she’s supposed to do (there’s a guy. guy is hot. guy is into her. period). and think about the trailer!!!!! all the hot guys walking behind cris holding those pool noodles that clearly represent their dicks and cris being completely unaffected by them, to joana being the only one to get in front of her and literally splash her wet. and like, this is all coming from a bisexual girl. i did my fair share of heternormativity and all that, but for a season that makes cris spell out the world bisexual it doesn’t do much to specify on how her attraction works. if they were going to align cris’ sexuality with irene’s, then at least change a couple of things so it’s different than og where isak is exclusively attracted to his same gender, no? sigh. i’ve seen similar arguments made for the case of lesbian joana, that she looks/feels trapped on her relationship with eloy and it all could have been comphet from her as well. to that i’m not so sure about tbh, but it would make much more sense if cris has been a lesbian. i mean, my personal headcanon is that she will later realize that she’s a lesbian.

kind of following that last point... to me it seemed like the only impact of cris being bisexual instead of lesbian on the plot is that bit about her hooking up with guys because she likes them and she wants to. the last scene with cris and hugo where he asks her if she was just pretending when they hooked up, it felt so... unaware? lacking in self awareness? like, yeah, hugo was still crushing on cris and all, but she shouldn’t be there to soothe him and reassure him that she was actually attracted to him and she wanted to hook up with him and whatever. hugo transforming into emma mid season is probably the worst choice they could’ve done with him lol, i had liked hugo so far but that read to me as such typical straight guy behavior that i held off from his character for a while.

eloy’s character is... sigh. he’s one of the few moc in the show and while i think that him not telling about joana’s mi before she gets the chance actually helps his character (and joana breaking up with him for good in ep 5 helps her character too), the problem is that there isn’t even a character to begin with. i don’t think we ever get to hear his voice for more than two seconds in the entire season. he doesn’t have a personality at all, he’s just joana’s disposable boyfriend. this wouldn’t piss me off as much if it wasn’t because eloy is a character of color and rubén, played by a white actor, gets to have a personality while eloy doesn’t.

suuuuuuuper nitpicky, i know. but the first kiss clip is beautiful until that underwater kiss. if they didn’t have the actual tools to make it look good in slow motion, they should’ve come up with someone else. c’mon skam españa..... you’re an expert at that! improvise! adapt! overcome! mermaid hair on point though

generally not a big fan of the coloring of this season, i think it looks nice on some morning/afternoon scenes but it looks wacky on night shots which skames has a lot of.

while i did mention that i love what skames did with norandro in the season, some of their scenes felt way too detached from the story and cris’ development. looking back, i think they did alright, but on the live experience it did felt infuriating lol. also switching to the viri show on the last episodes was so weird? after seeing s3, it doesn’t feel like the buildup was all that worth it, and viri passing out in school was never really explained, was it? it all seemed like it would follow on an ed plotline for viri, but that never happened.

look, if someone ever asked me about this particular choice i would defend it because damn am i a slut for skames, but like... why was lucas punched in this season :/ while it wasn’t that carelessly managed, it could’ve been easily replaced by a scene of cris either being called a slur, or by witnessing lesbian bashing or reading it on the news or something like that, instead of making such a dramatic plot point that is dropped super quickly and it’s such a minor stepback in cris’ development. i don’t deny that those things happened but i wish it could’ve been done differently, that’s all

i certainly don’t connect/relate to cris in the way that i did with isak and i’ll hold og s3 very dearly in my heart forever, but they did make so much out of the source material and it’s probably their best season so far. the main relationship is the biggest highlight and they don’t fall short in other areas, developing the best isak&sana relationship and also bettering their noorhelm on the background. irene’s a phenomenal actress and rizha is too and their chemistry is incredible as well, but the writing and planning of this season was also super well executed and it achieves almost everything that they set up. 9/10!!

Notes: this chapter is pretty short, but I hope you guys still like it! Sorry it’s taken me awhile to get around to writing it, I have been super busy lately!

I awoke to my head pounding, alone in my bed. I wondered why and when Steve ditched me, but found a note on my bedside table.

A soft smile swept on my face as I got ready to face the day. After popping some pain reliever and grabbing my water bottle, I headed for school.

Shortly into my day, I had my study hall period, which typically took place in the library. However, on this particular day, they had started putting in new floors, so we had to spend the hour ‘studying’ in the gym on the bleachers as the boys basketball team had their practice.

First, Billy came out of the locker room. I looked up from my work, I gave him a soft smile. He seemed surprised to see me, but instinctively responded with a wink, before jogging onto the basketball court.

Then, Steve came out of the locker room. At first his face looked distressed, until he locked eyes with me. We both shared a cheesy grin, and my cheeks got slightly warm. I looked back down at the papers on my lap.

As Steve made his way onto the court, I glanced up to see Billy with an annoyed look on his face. I assumed he caught the exchange between me and Steve, as he rolled his eyes before he went to begin the drills.

I sat on the lowest level of the bleachers with my math book on my lap. As I worked through a few problems, I could hear the two boys exchange a few words as they played the game.

“Harrington right? I heard you used to run this school. That true? ‘King Steve’ they used to call you. Then you turned bitch.”

“Hey, maybe you should just shut up and play the game.”

Billy was able to steal the ball and skillfully got it into the basket.

“Woo! That’s what I’m talking about!” He exclaimed.

All of a sudden I heard Nancy’s voice to my right, “Steve!”

He went to speak with her outside of the gym. I was scared of where this conversation would go, so I went to the gym door to listen in.

“What are you doing here?” Steve asked her.

“What do you think? Where were you this morning? I missed first period.” She responded with attitude.

“I figured Jonathan would take you.”

“What are you talking about?” Nancy questioned.

“Jesus, you really can’t handle your alcohol. Uh.. you remember going to Tina’s party last night?”

“Yes.”

“And then what?”

“I remember dancing and... spilling some punch... you got mad at me because I was drunk... and then you took me home.”

“No, see that’s where your mind gets fuzzy. That was your other boyfriend... that was Jonathan.” Steve said.

“I don’t understand.”

“It’s pretty simple Nancy, you were just telling it like it is.”

“What?”

“Apparently we killed Barb and I don’t care because I’m bullshit and our whole relationship is bullshit and I mean pretty much everything’s bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. Oh yeah, also you don’t love me.”

“I was drunk, Steve. I don’t remember any of that.”

“So what? That makes everything you said what just bullshit, too?”

“Yes!”

“Well then tell me!”

“Tell you what?”

“That you love me.” His voice projected his pain.

“Really?” Nancy scoffed.

Just then a basketball player ran out the door to inform Steve that Billy was killing their team.

There was silence for a moment, which indicated to me that Nancy had no response. I heard Steve’s footsteps heading my direction as he said, “I think that you’re bullshit.”

Steve made his way through the door and walked past me.

“Steve.” I said as I swiftly followed behind him.

At the sound of my voice, he turned around and engulfed me in a hug. I squeezed him tight, trying my hardest to relieve his pain. I didn’t even care about his sweaty smell or his sticky skin. All I cared about was being there for him.

“Better get back out there, Harrington.” I said to him.

He nodded, and his shoes squeaked as he retreated from me.

At the end of the school day, I headed for my car. A tension came into my shoulders as I realized that a certain curly haired boy stood in front of his Camaro, which was parked next to mine.

I tried to ignore him as I made my way to the drivers side of my car, keeping my eyes towards the ground to avoid eye contact.

He took a drag of his cigarette, let out the smoke, and said, “He doesn’t deserve you.”

“Excuse me?” I responded, dropping my backpack inside my car, then making my way around to get closer to him and look him in the eye.

“Harrington. He’s not good enough for you.” Billy replied.

“And you know what’s good for me?” I replied with sass.

“Well I at least know what’s not good for you.”

My heart pounded as anger flowed through my veins. I moved closer to the boy. “I heard the way you talked to him today during practice! I’m sorry, but that didn’t actually convince me that you’re a nice guy!”

“He deserves it for playing with your feelings!” He snapped back.

“Hargrove, I swear to god, if you keep trying to act like you know me... or Steve... or what goes on between us...”

Before I could finish my thought, Billy went on a fiery rant. “It doesn’t take a fucking rocket scientist to see what he constantly puts you through. (Y/N), you’re his rebound! He only gives you attention when Nancy shuts him down!” He inched closer to me and lowered his voice, “Be pissed at me all you want, but don’t criticize me for seeing that you deserve so much more than to be someone’s second option.”

I gazed into his bright blue eyes as he slowly raised his hand to my cheek. The smell of cigarette smoke lingered from his lips. I felt as though some sort of otherworldly force pulled me to him.

Our lips crashed together, causing a heat to rise into my chest. I hadn’t had such a mesmerizing kiss in so long. I suddenly realized where I was, and pulled away from him.

I bit my lip, fighting back the smile that wanted to emerge onto my face. My eyes darted away from Billy’s and I managed to see Steve, across the parking lot, gobsmacked at the sight he saw before him. He rolled his eyes at me, and turned to walk the other direction.

“Hey,” Billy whispered, “Don’t worry about him. He’ll get over it... and you deserve to be happy.”

I softly nodded. “I gotta go, Hargrove. I’ll see you around okay?”

He gave one nod of his head before taking his pointer finger and his thumb to grasp my chin. He planted a sweet kiss on my lips, winked at me, and got into his Camaro.

As I sat in the driver’s seat of my car, an overwhelming sense of confusion swept over me. Unbeknownst to me, the conflicted feeling I had in this moment, would be recurring for a significant period of time.

canon divergence, begins with courtenay being found in time, progresses through his convalescence at downton through to the end of the war when thomas becomes his valet/caretaker

He arrives at King’s Cross ten minutes before the train is due, and stands jittering at the correct gate, his father’s valet lingering at his elbows, clearly unsure if he should be offering a guiding hand or not.

Edward hears the train as it pulls in, and closes his eyes against the rush of heat that billows off it, a dragon’s breath washing over him. He wishes bitterly that he could see, that he could watch Thomas get off the train and come towards him, surrounded and silhouetted by steam, that he could see the smile on Thomas’ face as well as hear it in his voice. He takes a step forward, ignoring the way the valet’s fingers brush against his elbow, and silently prays to the god he stopped believing in when the gas crept under his mask and to his eyes that Thomas didn’t change his mind, that he came.

And then he smells tobacco smoke and feels the platform tremble minutely under his feet, and Edward can’t help it, he breaks into a wide smile, the kind that hasn’t graced his face since before the war.

“First class ticket, Lord Courtenay,” and god, he can hear it, he can hear Thomas’ smile, and they must look a pair of idiots, standing and grinning at each other and Edward couldn’t care less, “you do spoil me.”

Edward opens his mouth to reply, to make a similarly snappy retort, but then Thomas grasps his elbow and he’s a lost man. Somehow, Thomas turns it into a caress, a private, illicit thing in the middle of King’s Cross station, and Edward discovers that all the poets were right as Thomas slowly crawls his hand up his inner arm. You really can go weak in the knees.

“I thought it best to treat you well,” he manages, and Thomas slides up beside him, positioning himself at his side the way they’d done before, and Edward touches his forearm, trying to impart all of his gladness, all of his joy and delight, into a single touch. He fails, he’s sure, but feels that Thomas probably understands all the same.

the trees sweetly blooming (series) by darthnickelscanon divergence, original fic is post the canon s2 timeline where thomas is established as courtenay’s valet/caretaker and they find themselves visiting downton abbey for christmas, but there is also an in progress prequel. varying points of view.

“Do you remember the day we met?” Thomas asked, softly. It wasn’t a genuine question—Edward had come off the transport drugged to the gills and burning with fever. His first week in Downton was a long stretch of darkness.

He took Thomas’ hand.

“I don’t,” he said, “will you remind me?”

“It was pure chaos,” Thomas murmured. “All the nurses were fresh out of training, dithering and useless—the men were groaning and crying—”

“How romantic,” Edward cut in, dryly.

“Oh, it was,” Thomas gave his arm a squeeze. “Because I looked up and saw two lads carrying in the most handsome man I’d ever seen in my life.”

“Oh? Who was he?”

“You, stupid,” Thomas gave him a playful shove.

“My entire face was covered in bandages,” Edward replied, exasperated. “All the way down to my neck—”

“I know these things. Got a keen eye for it, I do—and don’t interrupt.” There was snow falling now, light and soft, and it caught in Edward’s hair like tiny sparkling gems. “I ditched my patient and rushed to your bedside, where I was urgently needed—”

“Of course you were—”

“And I said ‘nurse, if you jostle this man one more time I’ll have you sacked’—”

“—such a terror to the poor nurses—”

“—she said, ‘It’s a sad story, Corporal, the blisters were infected, unsanitary conditions, raging fever, poor soul won’t make it through to morning.”

“She was nearly right,” Edward said, darkly.

“It is, I suppose. More house than any family could even need.”

“What is it like?”

“Oh, big - monstrous, really. Even at shooting parties we don’t fill it. It’s like -” It was so strange, to have had Edward there, right on the doorstep of the place, and to know he knew nothing of it. “Here,” he said, and reached out to touch Edward’s hand. Edward let him take it without asking his intentions, though his eyebrows wrinkled slightly. Thomas turned his hand, resting it on his own gloved fingers. Edward’s palm was very soft and pale, none of the marks and calluses of a worker, only one Thomas recognized as being the mark of a shooter, still not worn down - or maybe exacerbated - by time in the trenches. “Big and square,” Thomas said, tracing the silhouette of the building on Edward’s skin, “With four small towers on the corners, and a tall one in the middle. All pointed like an old church, but much newer.”

“Ah,” Edward said, as though he understood it all from Thomas’s brief description. There was the smallest pause before their hands separated. “It sounds impressive.”

Thomas nodded slightly, without much conviction. “It’s all right.”

“You worked there before the war.”

“First footman.”

Edward nodded and was silent for a moment, and Thomas felt the difference between them drawing out like a string pulled too taunt. One would not have imagined them, heir and footman, sharing a couch like this. Touching hands, even for that brief moment. “How have you been, then?” Edward asked, and Thomas watched his fingers tighten on the couch’s arm, slightly - this was more difficult, somehow, than their visit at Downton Abbey, stranger.

“Well enough. Busy.”

“I hope I’m not taking you away from things you want to be doing.”

“No - you’re not.” There was nowhere else he wanted to be, and he’d made sure to get any necessary tasks done or relegated before he left for the day.

“And you? How are you?”

“Bored,” Edward said. “Always bored.”

“Hopefully I won’t contribute to that.”

“No - you’re the only exciting thing in my life.” The words came out fast - he was on the verge of being upset, Thomas knew the tone, the tightness of his jaw, the slope of his eyebrows. He remembered all of it.

S2 speculation, part 1

Alright, I know I’m sort of late to the game but I’ve been combing through the S2 trailers and I wanted to get some of my thoughts down in writing.

NEW CHARACTERS First things first, the Final Space twitter gave us a list of 8 new voice actors joining the cast for S2: Claudia Black, Ashly Burch, John DiMaggio, Ron Funches, Christopher Judge, Jane Lynch, Vanessa Marshall, and Alan Tudyk.

According to ScreenRant, Jane Lynch is going to be the voice of the new ship’s AI, and Conan O’Brien’s S1 character Clarence is going to be returning as a series regular. Ashly Burch and Ron Funches are also going to be joining our crew, so I assume that they’re these two:

who I’m gonna be calling Ash (which is actually the character’s confirmed name) and Ron respectively. Ron has a pretty sweet gun arm that kinda makes him look like Barret from Final Fantasy VII, and apparently it’s an intentional reference. As for Ash... I’m going to diverge from popular fandom opinion here and admit that I’m not sure how I feel about her character design. Every character in S1 was very visually distinct, but Ash just looks weirdly similar to Gary and Mama Goodspeed to me. (The conspiracy theory part of my brain is shouting LONG-LOST SISTER, but that seems unlikely lmao.) But I do have to say that she’s animated really well. Her body language manages to convey a lot of characterization in just a few short clips, so I’m pretty impressed on that front.

On the subject of Mama Goodspeed: according to the same ScreenRant article, she’s voiced by Claudia Black and is going to be an antagonist. Christopher Judge will also be playing an antagonist (a titan, maybe?) and Alan Tudyk voices this guy:

That just leaves John DiMaggio and Vanessa Marshall unaccounted for. I kinda wonder if Marshall might be the one saying “You cannot hold me... I’m coming” towards the end of the trailer, buuut it’s really hard to tell with all the vocal distortion.

The FS twitter also confirmed that Shannon Purser will be returning this season, though her character was absent from the trailers, and that David Tennant will only have a minor role--but also that he would have a larger role in a potential season 3. So, despite whatever’s going on here:

this is probably not the actual end of Lord Commander.

As for the actual content of the trailer: supposedly the majority of clips come from episodes 1-3, with a handful of additional material from 4-6. With that in mind, I’m gonna try to break down the scenes we got into possible episodes.

REASSEMBLING THE TEAM SQUAD I think we can safely assume that Gary waking up on the new ship, “meeting” HUE in his new robot body, and angsting about his failures is one of the first chronological sequences.

I’m guessing that they reunite with Little Cato shortly after that. All three of them seem to be together later on Garbage Planet, where they reunite with KVN:

Clarence is also there in the last shot--so maybe this is where they meet up with him too?

By the time they go to see Bolo, they’ve also added Nightfall, Mooncake, Ash and Ron to the adventuring party:

I feel like this has to happen pretty early on--possibly even in the first episode--in order to set up the overarching plot for the season, so they’re probably going to collect the rest of the team squad pretty quickly. (Though I have no idea how they’re gonna rescue Mooncake, considering the state we left him in at the end of S1!)

Nightfall is absent from a lot of the other group shots in the trailer, so I suspect she’s going to end up ditching everyone again to... go do whatever it is that Nightfall does. \_(ツ)_/¯ If that's the case, then all these other Nightfall scenes must take place shortly before or shortly after their encounter with Bolo.

Regarding that last image, Nightfall and Ash look like they might be inside the creepy red ship that's, uh... got a bit of a dead body infestation:

so I dunno what to think about that. Although it does make me wonder whether Nightfall could be the one who introduces Ash to the rest of the crew? After all, she must’ve been up to something during episodes 9 and 10...

THE RACE

It’s... a race? Not sure what else to say about this sequence lol.

This is based on absolutely nothing, but I’m gonna guess that the race is in the second episode. Feel free to make fun of me later when I turn out to be totally wrong. :P

INFERNO SNAKE Who is this snake thing, and what the heck is its deal? It sure seems like a destructive menace, but apparently someone took the time to make those really nice banners visible in the bottom images.

Ash is front and center in half of these, which makes me think that the snake is somehow connected to her. Also, the zombie-looking people visible in the background are dressed similarly to Ash and they have the same... eye goop?... that Ash does in that one really unsettling clip:

It also seems that they swapped out Ron Funches for Tribore on this adventure. (Hopefully Ron didn’t actually get eaten by Mooncake...) I’m guessing that this is episode 3, but ofc now that I’ve gone and said that publicly it’s probably going to end up being episode 6. c’est la vie.

Anyway, I have some more thoughts, but since this has gotten pretty long I’m gonna continue in a separate post!
