severance season two finale understands tragedy better than most stories overall, actually. a good tragedy doesn't need a villain. mark s. is not the villain. mark scout is not the villain. they're both selfish and impulsive and deeply human. gemma and mark scout can't be happy without dooming mark s and helly r, and vice versa. that's good tragedy right there. there was no right decision to make. it was always going to be this way. two hearts, one body; you can't follow both. they want the same thing: a happy ending with the woman they love. but a happy ending for one is always going to a tragedy for the other.

mark s's loyalty to his outie was what drove him to this point, but when he sees gemma, i think he realizes that he doesn't owe mark scout anything. because what has mark scout ever given him? why should he, a full human being of his own right, willingly walk into his death for a man he's only spoken to once? it's selfish. of course it is. but everything mark scout has done up until this point has been nothing except equally as selfish. it's unfair to expect mark s to sacrifice everything there is to himself just so mark scout and gemma can be together again. it's also unfair to expect mark scout to let mark s take his body and life to pursue his own.

that's the thing about tragedy. there is no fair option. someone's always going to suffer. this time, it was mark scout and gemma.

Severance Season 2 Spoilers!!

It's really interesting to me - that one line that Jame said about not seeing Kier in his daughter anymore. Because from what we can tell Kier is in control. He is pillar, he is support, and he has tamed the 4 tempers.

Woe. Frolic. Dread. Malice.

Kier does not possess these tempers because he has tamed him.

And yet Helena Eagan, the picture perfect form of an Eagan, reigning in her emotions and thoughts and her being to please her father to be a true Eagan no longer has Kier in her.

But Helly does.

And Helly is pure. fucking. malice.

And woe.

And frolic.

and dread.

Anybody talking about how the Cold Harbor room was an assembled baby crib that Gemma #27 or whatever is instructed to disassemble, while wearing the last outfit she had on before the crash. Each room tries to play on some sort of deep trauma, and the allusion to miscarriage or abandoning the dream of having a child is interesting. It's like they were trying to put her severely fractured mind under as many heavily loaded psychological symbols as possible to stress test the chip. Presumably there is a concern that some trauma might be strong enough to slip the barrier. So if they can verify absolutely 0 psychological cross-contamination between even dozens of innies in a single person, that means... something. I'm sure Lumon wants to know the limits for perfectly good and benevolent reasons.

So Mark crashing that final test was probably such a bad thing because they wanted each of those innies precisely traumatized so they could interview every single one to confirm no bleed-over before like killing her and burying her with a goat I guess?

Spoilers for severance s2 finale

Ok we gonna talk about Helly's expression while she and Mark ran away from Gemma? This last expression as she turned the corner? That was a really Helena expression. I think this plays into the idea that innies aren't totally different from outies, because her expression in that moment isn't one that says “I'm sorry.” It's one that says, “finders keepers” or “I have something you want that you can't get” or “he's mine haha sucker.”

At first I thought that when Helly ran into the hallway while Mark was with Gemma, she would tell Mark to go with her. I thought that the fact that helly was happy when they were running away was really uncharacteristic of her, because she knew how much Gemma means to Mark Scout. But of course the guy she's running with is Mark S, not Mark Scout. And with Helly, not giving innies what they desperately want is definitely a theme with her, because of how she feels about her own innie. She believes that all innies have prejudice over their outies, so she doesn't care if Mark Scout doesn't get Gemma. (Of course they're probably gonna see each other like 10 minutes later but we don't talk about that) and Mark S is starting to feel that way too, and we saw that in his conversation with Mark Scout in the beginning of the episode.

So yeah. Helly doesn't care about Mark Scout's relationship with Gemma, because she doesn't know either of them. All she knows is Mark S and Ms Casey, and of COURSE she cares about Ms Casey, so she's glad that she's safe, but Mark S doesn't know Gemma at all, but he's also glad that Ms Casey is safe.

So yeah
