"It's shocking to both the media and various other CEOs - who immediately went into hiding - that Brian Thompson would be shot because they didn't think that they would ever be treated like one of the numbered pigs that they look at with no feeling from giant glass towers." -Henry Zebrowski

Let's just pretend for a second that I'm not 5 years late to analyzing this scene because I just recently became a Steven Universe fan, hello-
But can I just talk about how this scene is not only about getting Pearl's memories back, but also how it makes a better memory for her and "corrects" a bad one?
I'm of course talking about this memory specifically:
This flashback from We Need to Talk shows us a scene in which during Greg's music video for What Can I Do (For You)? that he sang in a duet with Rose, Pearl gets jealous and decides to ask Rose to fuse to try to get Greg to back off and believe he's just a phase for Rose and not enough for her because he can't fuse with her.
It's equally a bad moment for Greg as he tries to prove Pearl wrong and attempt fusion with Rose later on, but is unable to in the way that gems do.
However, many years later, it's Independent Together that tackles both of these issues.
The song begins with Steven and Greg fusing, for the first time allowing Greg to know what it's like to be a part of a fusion which he never could do before as a human until his half-gem half-human son came along. And then there's Pearl and Amethyst who also fuse, not out of jealousy on Pearl's part, but out of friendship and love.
It's a choice that Pearl makes even after just reliving her story with Rose and the tragic way that it ended. She chooses now to move on, after love and loss and all the tears that she cried as she sang earlier in Happily Ever After. She chooses to try to keep moving forward toward that happiness with the friends she still has left, and in the end, isn't that what this movie is about even for our main antagonist?
"Some day, somewhere, somehow... you'll love again. You just need to find someone..."
"Someone who treats you better, someone who wants you around. Some day, somewhere, somehow, you're gonna feel found."
And do we even mention the fact that both of these scenes happen in a concert setting on stage? Or the differences between songs?
"What can I do for you? What can I do that no one else can do? What can I do for you? What can I do for you?"
"Nothing Is holding me back now No one Can push me around
What do I wanna be? I'm the master of me And isn't the thought enough to lift me off of the ground?"
Independent Together isn't just about remembering the past you lost, it's also about making up for that past. It's about moving on, about choosing the future that lies ahead of you, the friends you make and the ones who were waiting for you to choose them. And it's about the freedom to choose that happily ever after you never thought you would have before. Each of them who are left - Steven, Greg, Pearl, Amethyst - they all have each other to lean on for the support they need now that Rose is gone, and having the people they love to fall back on in their darkest times is exactly what they all need to heal.
