Genuinely my main thing with the Watcher thing (I watch their stuff but I’d never consider myself a die hard fan) is that I really want to see the back end projections and business plans that went into this. Show me how their math mathed to the point that this seemed not just viable, but an improvement upon YouTube at this moment in time.

I’ve been watching it unfold all day and seeing the comparisons to Dropout, the unfortunate optics of reinstating the “let’s go eat stupidly expensive stuff” show as your first big new thing for the platform while also saying you don’t have money to do the “TV-quality” things you want, all that’s fine and dandy and not incorrect. But I just can’t see how this is financially going to win out.

I wish the boys the best, hope it works out for their sakes, and I hope regardless that one day we get an idea of what the decision making process was. Not the vague “ad revenue ain’t what it used to be” type comments they made in their very not-reading-the-room announcement video, but actual numbers. I’m super interested.

#I love Dropout’s style but I’m also not subbed to them #I am chronically unable to keep up with things that aren’t on YouTube since I spend all day there #no matter how much I love them #i also think they’re trying to both-sides making content where they clearly wanna upgrade into tv level stuff #but also only want to make their Buzzfeed content that drew the eyeballs and brought in the money #but those Buzzfeed series worked because they were simple and the focus was on the guys and not the production value #mystery files lost a ton of momentum when they started talking to each other from across the room instead of next to each other at a table #ghost files doesn’t work when there’s twelve other people filming and ruining the isolated vibes #and I actually liked their watcher original stuff the best #puppet history and weird wonderful world were my favorites #I even liked Steven’s shows which is APPARENTLY a hot take now #but they all cancelled after one season #so I’m good #watcher #watcher entertainment #steven lim #ryan bergara #shane madej

i’ve been listening to/watching many (many, many) reactions to steven universe (because that’s what you do when you become newly obsessed with something. see what everyone else thinks about it and drive yourself mad) and it’s so interesting to see all the unique ways people tackle it and the common threads between them all.

there’s podcast recaps (pressure to over-analyze) vs youtube reactions (pressure to overreact). everyone knowing the show (yay) vs fans guiding newcomers (interesting) vs everybody being blind (often disastrous). don’t mind silly fun? they love the first season and amethyst’s character. told about how ~deep~ it gets and expecting only that? they love pearl and have to be dragged through the beginning. even how they chunk the episodes affects things—in watching episode-by-episode, people go the most mad as they try to squeeze meaning out of episodes they can’t yet appreciate until later (or are just. bad at analyses.). in chunks of two, people assume su will have much more horror after watching frybo and cat fingers back-to-back. and chunks of 5 are completely different too!

this only skims the surface. i can watch any episode of su and point out which jokes usually make people laugh, what people pick up on, and how their opinion of the situation reflects on whether they have mommy issues.

#steven universe #the ‘thats what you do’ comment was a joke ftr #i love seeing yt comments be filled with the same people btwn diff channels #bc i know they’re on my journey too!#the most popular one is s/orta stupid reacts bc they are quite intelligent and respectful #s/putnik’s spyglass is fun bc u can tell the reactor got truly invested!!#g/allifrey gals gets so emotional even at the ‘silly’ episodes they’re my favorite ;-;#s/pilling the milk is stupid humor. but they genuinely love the show and will defend it ALWAYS #(though it’s more apparent if you watch their uncut reactions and watch them wrangle twitch chat)#podcasts have been more disastrous for me.. the hyper-analysis format for newcomers not only sets up unfair expectations for the show #but also are almost always all over the place which is the podcasters’ decisions!!#they can talk about their personal lives! i’m listening to it all for free #(also it’s funny bc 99% of podcasters say how no one is watching them meanwhile im there. watching them.)#but it’s just not as enjoyable. also they tend to have really annoying opinions srry.#had to listen to two guys seriously discuss steven and amethyst as a ship. without mention of the age gap WTF?#and in another some guy said how ‘he can’t consider su best television if they keep having silly episodes’#acting all pretentious like know your genre smh #oh and podcasters tend to be guys so i have also listened to guys be like sadie and amethyst r so ugly :/#and ‘when will there be male gems i can’t relate to any of the characters if they’re all girls #oh there’s steven? he’s a fat kid though’#<-none of these are exaggerations it’s really painful #for podcasts i recommend ‘the b/its su podcast’! they’ve watched it all before and everyone’s queer so it’s all great :)#it’s still ongoing too #now i sound harsh on podcasts bc i don’t mention the bad yt reactions ive seen #(and i’ve seen them)#but idk there’s not many good reaction podcasts #now you may be reading this and think i’m writing wayy too much on the topic of reactions random ppl on the internet have for a show #and you’d be right. BUT i’m like those little kids that get frustrated when a movie has no interactability #i have to listen to people say the s1 finale was underwhelming as i scream in my head how they’re watching the wrong order bc h/bo max sucks #yes i have gone crazy. i truly mean it when i say i have watched and listened to SO MANY of these

Well. One day back in the US of A and I SLAMMED back into my normal schedule which is: go to bed at 8 pm and get up at 5. Which is fine but it’s also a lot colder here and therefore hard to want to do stuff during the day, I end up huddling on the couch in the heated blanket with Boots instead of, you know, working on my 1001 projects:

I did manage to answer like 40 emails yesterday and get Frankie’s tie dry cleaned for the wedding!!! So it’s all fine. I do want to finish the purple dress before Wednesday so I should get on that…

what the actual fuck is uk athletics on. like what do you mean “setting tough standards helps improve performance levels” my brother in christ you are refusing to take athletes who have qualified for the olympics to the olympics. and there are a NUMBER of examples this year of people who did qualify (including a woman whose best throw this season would have placed her 6th at the last olympics) but weren’t selected. what kind of logic is it that having teammates that don’t make it out of early rounds is going to bring performance down? how do you know that being selected for the olympics isn’t going to inspire crazy PRs, like molly seidel getting bronze at the 2020 olympics in her third ever marathon? you know what country always takes the absolute maximum number of athletes in track and field, even when that means people are going to get eliminated in round 1? team usa. you know what country has the most medals in track and field? team usa.

there’s a lot of complaints abt how the us olympic trials works whenever a big name goes out in a shocking or tragic way but jesus christ at least we avoid all this bullshit. if you make it, you make it; top three at the trials and you’ve qualified, congrats, you’re an olympian. none of this qualifying but arbitrarily not getting selected nonsense.

#good morning i have thoughts.#to say nothing of how discouraging that is for your entire system of athletes #and how you will lose valuable elements of the system to disillusionment #when you want maximum athletes retiring happily to go out and encourage their communities to engage and become next gen athletes #or like. how this absolutely discourages everyone from specializing in certain events #OR EVEN LIKE. LMFAO. ENCOURAGES ILLEGAL/BORDERLINE ILLEGAL PRACTICES #bc if you won’t take people who are lich rally qualified. then somebody’s gonna get desperate enough eventually #like. if you ever actually want to compete against the us. you’re gonna have to a) grow the sport and b) send more people #it’s simple math! and uk athletics seems set on not doing either!#the netherlands apparently pulled some shit too for the SECOND TIME #also the sponsorship politics nonsense going on for. i wanna say kenya’s? marathon team?#sending not your best over someone who is objectively faster just bc they’re sponsored by the same company as the federation is… nasty

#listen I think I have a right to experience A Lot of annoyance over all this because I had to see ‘criticisms’ like that so often #this is a particularly hilarious one the same level as the people complaining about Daisy and Billy being the only ones on the Aurora cover #(there are changes with the shoot but them being the only two on the cover is the same as in the book lmao ya’ll can not read apparently #‘it’s an insult to the message of the book because it’s supposed to be the whole band on the cover and not just the Billy and Daisy show uw #you are talking about the scene in the book where the entire band in interview is mad/bitter about how they ended up going with only DB #on the cover even years later while Daisy and Billy in their interviews gush over how gorgeous and iconic the cover featuring just them is #like … ya’ll are conflating a general sentiment those chars were allowed to express with what the actual scene was grrr #it’s one of the best funniest parts of the book too like I love that part…#and if the complaint was ‘I’m sad the other interviews weren’t as extensive at that part in the show’ totally would be valid crit to me #I would have liked them to show everyone reacting in interviews too (they did show them esp Eddie be unhappy about it but #your right there wasn’t as much specific exploration in the show of how the side chars were effected. But they’re still side chars with sid #plots in the book lol #also only Karen actually deserves to be explored as a char the rest I’m more than fine with getting less and then instead investing far mor #in developing Simone’s plot and arc.)#there’s stuff with Graham I do think could have been useful/worth while thematically if they’d had the 13eps and could do it all (and I’m a #Graham hater xd) but I certainly wouldn’t prioritize it over the things the show did focus on #and it’s not remotely high on my list of things they didn’t focus on as much as I wanted. ofc #in fact like I said… I thought it was so funny they did not gaf about the Dunne brothers relationship 😭#like it is an interesting dynamic in the book there are good scenes. but I’m obsessed with their choice to not give anything to any of #Billy’s dynamics that aren’t the love triangle points and Teddy. respectable af #vs Daisy and to a lesser extent Camila both have way more developed dynamics outside of him incred #(another reason ‘they made Daisy and Camila center around Billy’ crit makes me roll my eyes #like in the sense that the love triangle is elevated in terms of focus sure. and people are free to have qualms about that choice #basically saying the show prioritized the romance for the characters and char work is accurate. saying they did that more for the girls and #less for Billy idk what show you were watching
