A reworked headcanon now that we have new games:
Using a Pokémon to fly between locations requires a licence in most regions, however the criteria needed in order to obtain one varies from region to region.
In most regions, a Flying Licence is obtainable to anyone holding a valid trainer's license, provided they've collected a set number of gym badges. Trainers are also expected to pass a short certification test, which really just confirms they know not to exceed certain altitudes, to avoid flying within the vicinity of an airport, to avoid leaving the region's airspace, and to ensure they're aware they MUST use a domesticated Pokémon.
In Galar and Paldea, a much more thorough (and prohibitively expensive) exam is required to obtain a licence, hence the presence of aerial taxis within these regions.
In Fiore, the rules are the absolute strictest, with Flying permits only being granted to Pokémon Rangers, who also must use a bonded Pokémon. Fiore is also the only region which requires permit holders to contact local air traffic control to avoid collisions.
These restrictions don't apply to the Dragonite Shuttle, since it flies a pre-trained route that's already been cleared by the appropriate authorities, however the Dragonite must wear a tracking device to ensure it doesn't veer off course.
Almia is the only region to allow permit holders to fly on wild Pokémon, however as stated in game this is a privilege only extended to Rangers in the upper echelons of Almia's Pokémon Ranger Union.
Oblivia is a free for all because it's the quickest way to island hop and nobody cares enough to regulate it.
#i have perhaps gotten back into mayday#which of course has made me wonder 'how does atc in the pokemon world deal with people flying about on giant birds?'#as one does#which also made me wonder 'why can't you quick travel via flight in the og ranger game like you can in the other ranger games and mainlines#which made me conclude; fiore's rules are extra strict. for reasons.#pokemon ranger#pokemon worldbuilding#worldbuilding#headcanons#mainline games#ranger one#shadows of almia#guardian signs#fiore region#almia region#oblivia region#Galar region#Paldea region

do you all wanna hear random pokemon worldbuilding headcanons i've had written down for a while but never really had an excuse to talk about. of course you do here you go
you know how pikachu in the anime says "pikapi" when it refers to ash bc it sounds like satoshi? a lot of pokemon do that. the only ones i've thought of so far are volo's togepi calling him "toto" and emmet's archeops calling him "che-ar-che" (kudari)
my in-game explanation for dex cuts only starting to happen in swsh is that more regulations were put in place to prevent invasive species, after alola's current problem with alolan rattata. you Can have cross-region pokemon still, but you can't release them outside a region they're not native to, you cant breed them, no freeroaming. protag characters arent traveling out of their region so they only use the pokemon available to them
pokemon journeys are a very integral part of the society! its seen as a coming of age thing by most, However, it's never mandatory, and you can go on one at any point in your life. it can be as long or short as you want, you can have a goal from the start or you can just wing it. its not even always about battling, some people do it for contests or just making friends and seeing sights. its not a strongly defined thing
since its such an important part of the world theres immense support for it! its why pokemon centers are free and you can even stay at them overnight in little hotel rooms attached to them specially made for travelers. the gym circuit's purpose is a good progression tracker for people who want to go that route, an easy way to sequentially explore the entire region while battling its best trainers
the poke balls found in the overworld with items in them are specifically left by other people as treats and aid for traveling trainers. its also why people just give you free stuff just for talking to them
"sinnohan form" is technically an acceptable term for hisuian pokemon, but people are so used to calling them hisuian pokemon bc thats how it was written in early dexes and carried over, that not a lot of people call them sinnohan actually
speaking of. sinnoh nowadays has a much higher population of dark type unovan zorua :)
the way rotom work is that they slot their sparkplug body into something in order to possess it. newer appliances make it harder for them to do so. thats why the rotom catalog is a thing now - people have made rotom specific appliances that are easy to possess and are battle resistant
zoroark have photographic memory to produce realistic illusions with. hisuian zoroark mostly do not retain this - most ghost-types born from the death of something else have memory issues especially about their past life - but what they Can do is pull memories directly from their victim's minds and construct more tailored illusions out of that
meloetta also never forgets a song or dance that it hears. when it performs, it can transmit its memories of instrumentals played for it to its listeners. so when you hear guitar play when encountering it in the terarium, thats completely diegetic
when testing a trainer to see if they're worthy of catching it, or when its already captured, legendary pokemon actively hold back in battle. its simply a game mechanic that every legendaries' stats arent like 10000 in every stat. a genuine no holds barred precipice blades would reduce your garchomp to dust. in battles where the pokemon is Actively trying to kill you like eternamax eternatus, your pokemon should be trying their best to dodge every single attack and the huge damage they do sustain is from being Grazed. its extremely rare for anyone to see a legendary pokemon's true power
battling and the use of poke balls simply never caught on in fiore, almia and oblivia. they've historically always been extremely close with pokemon, unlike regions like hisui where people started off scared of them. so, proving yourself with a battle and using poke balls to befriend a pokemon was never necessary
^ the lack of poke balls in those regions did once cause a major issue, where people from abroad realized befriended pokemon counted as "wild" still, so they could easily steal them. this is part of why the ranger union was established, and also why pokemon can let themselves out of poke balls when they wish. its a safety measure. ranger bases can manually tag a pokemon to prevent others poke balls from working on them
the ranger union of fiore, almia and oblivia is completely different to the rangers of the mainline regions, but they find merit in their different ways of handling pokemon so they sometimes swap members
i have several thoughts about the different pros and cons of battling and poke balls vs capture stylers:
poke balls need to constantly be replaced, but a styler is a one-time purchase that a ranger can use for years
mainline region rangers do battles, but that wouldn't work if, for example, the pokemon was already injured and weakening it further to get it to stay in a poke ball would cause it unecessary stress or be dangerous. union rangers calm pokemon by getting them to trust them via styler, but this just becomes dangerous if the pokemon is particularly aggressive.
poke balls are great for transporting a pokemon, keeping it isolated if, say, they have to take an aggressive pokemon through a busy city. but, they wont work on pokemon that have already been captured with a ball. stylers cannot undo a capture, but they can encourage a pokemon to leave a dangerous person and come with the ranger
#clai speaks#ofc i mostly have ranger thoughts. you know why#i hope my rambling makes sense 👍 i love thinking about the finer details of pokemon#hey hey. open invitation to tell me anything interesting you think about pokemon btw. i want to hear it so badly

Chikyuu's Top Rangers
I've been playing Pokemon Ranger a lot lately after finally getting my hands on Guardian Signs. My favorite will forever be Shadows of Almia but I do have a soft spot for the menace that was the original game.
But who cares? AU lore!
Chikyuu currently has 3 Top Rangers: Rita, Kaguragi, and Himeno. Yanma is a Ranger for the Union but also works as a Mechanic bc he wouldn't stop messing with whatever tech he gets his hands on. Gira and Jeramie are Area Rangers making their way up the ranks in hopes of becoming Top Rangers as well. Retainers are all Operators.
Rita and Himeno are always working together because Rita's choice of uniform could often have them mistaken for whatever evil group terrorizes the region for their dark color scheme. Himeno's contrasts with them nicely so the Union often has them working together to make sure there's no misunderstandings from the general populace.
While they both have their own Operators, Morfonia became their main for both of them whenever they're working together. Because of this, she often has to remind them to keep their eyes on the missions and quests while also helping Himeno with damage control if Rita gets too serious about an abduction rescue quest. She also owns a Munchlax who sometimes follows the two. (All 3 end up dating even tho Morf is always yelling into their voicemails for Himeno to stop flirting mid-mission. Not unless she's also flirting with the Operator. The Union can't find themselves complaining as they're one of the best teams.)
#how they got shinies for partner I can't tell lol#Spewpa's jp name is Kofuurai which is why Rita named it Koffun#Fomantis is Karikiri so I'm stuck between Himeno calling it Karin or Kiri-chan#Yanma does enable Rita's sudden bloodlust when a cute pokemon is in danger 😂#kingohger#king ohger#ohsama sentai kingohger#rita kaniska#rita kanisuka#himeno ran#hymeno ran#himerita#hymerita#kingoh doodles#pokemon ranger#kingoh au

A week has passed for everyone, and all were able to recover from their wounds…unfortunately, not emotionally and mentally. Even Aries herself including Lamont were still distraught upon learning what Veda has done to the both of them…. Oddly, peace was with the two. Lamont stopped having nightmares of that day and was able to sleep normally, and Aries felt closure in learning Cornelius is proud of her as well. It felt nice…. However, Cipher lived on with new leaders and three new Commanders. As well hearing rumors of some of the local Pokémon began to act strange while they began to attack people for no reason. Something has rose with Cipher, and like them, they to want revenge.
Aries meanwhile couldn’t do much thanks to her now scarred leg. Luckily it was healing quickly than normal which gives her the chance to try exercising her upper body and a bit on her legs to slowly recover through training exercise. Lamont remained in the Frigate to not only remain safe but to help whatever is happening to the outside, until hearing news that the Top Pokémon Rangers have arrived from Fiore, Almia, and Oblivia to investigate what has been going on.. he is relieved they are here, but he’s also concern for them all… especially his family back home, elbows on the deck and hands on his head as he began to worry for them… ‘Did Cipher got them before Aries’s family?…’ He thought. Feeling very anxious about it all, even trying to work up the courage to contact them was nerve wrecking for the poor man… having doubts and fears of them won’t forgive the actions he was forced to do…
But up in the skies of the Unova Region, sores a silver glider in a search for something while using the clouds as their shield to not be seen… not yet. Not until they find the Frigate… Flying through the cities and taking in the beautiful view of the Unova Region, it felt so peaceful to fly once again after so long… “Now where is that damn Ship though?”

Reverse AU
Ais Intro
Both the canon top rangers, Ranger Sven and Wendy has a different style of outfit. I would like to keep true to that. However, I can’t just erase Ice, Lavana, and Heath color code of blue, pink, yellow haha.. So yes! Their uniform is slightly different in color as Reverse.
Ais outfit is based on the traditional outfit of Hokkaido, which is the inspiration for Almia region (according to Wiki). When I saw this outfit I knew I had to give Ais something like this. This is because the silhouette (Longer inner than outer) is very much opposing Ice canon design (Longer outer than inner)
Ice design is very princely, seems modern. To oppose that, I gave Ais a traditional outfit. The pattern remains around the arm and torso, however it stays inwards at the torso to oppose the original. He will stay using the sword-like styler for the vibe alone. I also hinted that Ais prefer to go full action rather than passive. I also wanted to show differences between Ice and Ais from how other character views him: Isa dislikes and is always skeptical towards him.

Hey.
I've got an absolute horrible idea. You should do it.
Worst Region.
Options would be: Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar, and Paldea. Maybe an "other" choice too, but personally I don't think people are gonna hate on places like Almia or Ferrum unless they live there in misery. And surely nobody could hate Orre.

Pokeballs vs. Capture Stylers
As a ranger, it is my deeply held belief, based on observation and experience, that Pokeballs are an under-estimated danger to pokemon and the environment. They can cause harm even when used properly and with good intentions. When used by someone with criminal or otherwise nefarious intent, they make causing harm ludicrously easy. Let's do a little comparison, shall we?
How do you get it? Pokeballs can be bought for money in Pokemarts, and are often handed out for free at promotional events. Capture stylers are given only to certified rangers.
What about more advanced versions? Some types of Pokeball require a certain number of League badges to purchase. Others are gated only by cost alone. Capture stylers have built-in limits that can be gradually removed by senior rangers once a ranger has proven experience and risen in rank.
Who regulates it? Pokeballs are produced by the Silph and Devon corporations. While they have some cooperation with the Pokemon League, and are regulated by government, their fundamental motivation is profit. Capture Stylers are regulared by the Ranger Union. Even if one could mass-capture using a styler, it would not benefit the Union to do so.
How many pokemon can you catch? While league battles allow only a fighting team of six, a person can buy and own as many pokeballs as they can carry. Even for the highest-ranked rangers, the maximum number of friend Pokemon is 7.
Can you take pokemon somewhere unsafe for them/the environment? Capture stylers prevent taking a pokemon out of it's native habitat, a limitation removed only for Top Rangers. A brand-new trainer could catch a magikarp and then immediately release it into the desert if they wanted.
What happens if you capture a wild pokemon? With a pokeball, the pokemon is now permanently registered as captured by the trainer. It can be released. Depending on the training experience, it may or may not be safe/appropriate to release back into the wild, even in its native habitat. With a capture styler, the pokemon remains wild. It can temporarily assist a ranger, and then return immediately to its natural environment and behaviors.
What if you try to catch someone else's pokemon? A pokeball prevents re-capture of an already registered pokemon. A capture styler can be used to capture an owned pokemon (this is often done to return lost pokemon, or soothe agitated or injured ones) but it does not change the ownership of the Pokemon.
Is there skill involved? There is strategy in Pokeball capturing, especially via battle. But theoretically, one could still bombard even a legendary pokemon with enough pokeballs and capture it by sheer statistical chance. Proper use of a capture styler requires education and training. Even if someone stole a capture styler, they would not automatically be able to use it.
What if someone "bad" tries to catch a pokemon? Anyone can buy and use a pokeball regardless of intentions. A capture styler conveys the intentions of the ranger. No matter how skilled/experienced, a person could not capture a pokemon they wished to harm in an unmodified/unhacked styler.
What about evil teams? Criminal organizations where pokeballs are readily available (Johto, Kanto, Hoenn, etc.) have simply used regular pokeballs for purposes of robbery, poaching, etc. Evil teams in regions where capture stylers are popular (Fiore, Almia, and Oblivia) have either heavily modified an experimental styler (Super Stylers) or needed to invent and produce an entirely new capture system (Gigaremo, Capture Gauntlet). This vastly limited available supply to team members, and speed of plans. I'm going to repeat that bit. Without access to pokeballs, evil teams found it easier to make, manufacture and distribute their own inventions than to use capture stylers for crime.
What happens if you defeat a criminal using a pokemon? Defeating a criminal (such as an evil team member) in a trainer battle may lead to an arrest, but they may also run away and keep the pokemon they own. When using a styler to capture pokemon controlled by other means (e.g. gigaremo units) the pokemon return to the wild.
You see why I think it's insane that of these two methods, one is meticulously regulated, and the other can be bought for pocket change at a corner store? In case anyone lacks reading comprehension, I'm not saying pokeballs make people evil. But it is a hell of a lot easier to commit crimes like mass trafficking with pokeballs than with stylers. And even well meaning, perfectly nice people can do things like drastically alter local pokemon populations by catching many in a short time span, or releasing them inappropriately. Pokeballs are insane and I'm so tired of people thinking I'm the weird one for saying so.

i love how your headcanons for fiore and almia are super strict laws and stuff, but for oblivia its just like. "yeah whos gives a shit. theres only 1 ranger anyone can fly a staraptor go ahead"
I'll confess Oblivia is my perpetual afterthought lmao Honestly it's really just me filling in the blanks left by the games themselves lol, I know a lot of the reasons why flight was so restricted in R1 and SoA was probably budget constraints, but it's fun to think about in a worldbuilding sense yanno? Flight is restricted in Almia and Fiore because Something Happened and both of them decided letting normal people fly on Pokémon was a horrible idea so Pokémon flight is a luxury reserved for high ranked Rangers only. Oblivia doesn't have this issue because the Union's influence is limited, and nobody cares enough to enforce the rules because honestly they seem like they have bigger problems than somebody joyriding on a Staraptor.
Oblivian airspace operates entirely under VFR, enter at your own risk.
#Idk Oblivia always struck me as being a very poor region#Only three islands are inhabited and one of them is a glorified retirement village and the other two just look very...#I dunno. I just always got the vibe it was a developing nation#Mod answers#Pokemon ranger#Guardian signs#oblivia region#Ranger one#shadows of almia#fiore region#almia region#worldbuilding

Hello, my name is Jón Sveppir, you can call me Ranger Sveppir. I am a retired Ranger who now works at Skjøldur Labs in the Ohrken Region, and I am making this blog to share stuff about my work and show the great work the scientists are doing here.
So some important things out of the way:
I was born in Sinnoh
I joined the Sinnoh Rangers at 20, and served with them for for 14 years before being transferred to the Almia HQ. I have served in most regions at some point or another excluding Paldea and a few other.
Yes this does mean I have worked in Orre, yes It was not a fun experience.
I served with the Rangers until the age of 65 when I was forced to retire, though at that point I was no longer doing field-work. I was then approached by Skjøldur Labs who I had aided in the past while with the rangers and they offered to hire me, so here I am.
These days I mostly do paperwork and act as a interlocutor between the Rangers and Skjøldur.
Speaking of I should cover Skjøldur.
The lab here help with more bizarre or extreme cases that most other labs or centers cannot handle or lack the resources to do so. We also work on ways to allow Pokemon with these severe conditions to live longer happier lives.
For example, you may have seen quadrupedal pokemon with with wheelchairs before, the original design for which was created by the Skjøldur Labs founder.
Sorry for all the rambling I have never been one to be short-spoken. But yeah this blog is to share some of our work and to just share some of my day to day things. Feel free to ask any question you like, and I will do my best to answer. However, in cases of pokemon health and/or care, don't treat my words as gospel, take your pokemon to a center or somewhere else please. But yeah, feel free to ask whatever you like.
Gonna add my pokemon here as well for those interested.
Woops: (M) My starter and old af quagsire. Caught him in sinnoh as a wooper when I thought I was gonna be a trainer and he became my partner when I became a ranger. I have like 40-somethijg nicknames for this guy so if I say something like woops'alot or Woopsifur or Sire I'm talking about him.
Sol: My Valcorona, had a Larvesta egg dumped on me while I was in Unova, a real sweetheart, also has a sweet tooth, don't leave your snacks unguarded.
Sandy: (F) My castform, got her a while back when I was still an active ranger, she's a rescue from a raid done on an illegal breeding operation. Dr.Amilee discovered she likes wearing clothes so if you see a castform in a silly hat in one of my photos that'd be her.
Some other things
* Asks are open, feel free to ask anything, there are no stupid questions.
* Pelliper Mail is open.

Hello, hello! Lots of good stuff to post about as we begin our winter studies, so let's get to it in a nice and sunny...
Clive Update!🌴
Now, I know what you're probably thinking. I'm a bit Psychic-type like that. "Clive, palm trees are so two seasons ago (or two seasons from now)!"
But what if I told you...
You could travel somewhere with living palm trees?!
I know. Mind = Blown. Today, I'm talking a bit about our school's exchange opportunities! Some of you might have already experienced them, but never too late to give a shout-out!
First up:
👹Kitakami!👹
This program is our school's very own, experiential learning-based, culture exchange program with the Land of Kitakami! Nestled roughly between the more well-known regions of Kanto to the south and Almia/Sinnoh to the north, Kitakami is a quiet place with an incredibly rich history--and according to the souvenirs students have sent back, incredibly delish sweets!
Stay with the locals as you explore regional great sights, make new Poképals (now approved to stay over in Paldea, after some very long negotiations), and maybe even enjoy some seasonal festivities and learn about Kitakami religion and culture in the process! If you're interested, send an "app" to the Study Abroad Office. (Your scholarships carry over, yo!)
Next, an exchange I'm quite excited to announce:
🫐Blueberry Academy!🫐
Travel all the way to offshore Unova (I've "forgor" where exactly off the coast) to experience battling like you'll never believe it! While we here at Naranja-Uva encourage a balance of classroom and experiential learning, Blueberry Academy's "DIY" approach is perfect for those looking for classes all about catching, training, and battling with the "perf" partners! (Don't worry, there's other classes, so you'll still get your credits--they're just extra hands-on too!)
Other bonuses if you're still feeling a bit "blue" about leaving us behind for a semester: Blueberry Academy has quite the "kickass" lineup of clubs, complete with its own league, the most widely varied biomes you could imagine within an undersea dome, and really good pizza. If you can finish the servings over there, anyways! Again, come talk to the Study Abroad Office if you've got a craving... for adventure!

Yeah, a few years back. Got a rock thrown at my head, had some pinap coladas, fought a Crabrawler with my bare hands, it was a good time.
List of things Alolans are unusually hostile over:
Mega evolution
Island trial dropouts
Software piracy I guess
#rayplies#your region is honestly one of the nicer ones I've been to#still bitter about what happened in Almia#and I'm not touching Galar with a twelve-foot pole ever again if I can help it
