Pokeballs vs. Capture Stylers
As a ranger, it is my deeply held belief, based on observation and experience, that Pokeballs are an under-estimated danger to pokemon and the environment. They can cause harm even when used properly and with good intentions. When used by someone with criminal or otherwise nefarious intent, they make causing harm ludicrously easy. Let's do a little comparison, shall we?
How do you get it? Pokeballs can be bought for money in Pokemarts, and are often handed out for free at promotional events. Capture stylers are given only to certified rangers.
What about more advanced versions? Some types of Pokeball require a certain number of League badges to purchase. Others are gated only by cost alone. Capture stylers have built-in limits that can be gradually removed by senior rangers once a ranger has proven experience and risen in rank.
Who regulates it? Pokeballs are produced by the Silph and Devon corporations. While they have some cooperation with the Pokemon League, and are regulated by government, their fundamental motivation is profit. Capture Stylers are regulared by the Ranger Union. Even if one could mass-capture using a styler, it would not benefit the Union to do so.
How many pokemon can you catch? While league battles allow only a fighting team of six, a person can buy and own as many pokeballs as they can carry. Even for the highest-ranked rangers, the maximum number of friend Pokemon is 7.
Can you take pokemon somewhere unsafe for them/the environment? Capture stylers prevent taking a pokemon out of it's native habitat, a limitation removed only for Top Rangers. A brand-new trainer could catch a magikarp and then immediately release it into the desert if they wanted.
What happens if you capture a wild pokemon? With a pokeball, the pokemon is now permanently registered as captured by the trainer. It can be released. Depending on the training experience, it may or may not be safe/appropriate to release back into the wild, even in its native habitat. With a capture styler, the pokemon remains wild. It can temporarily assist a ranger, and then return immediately to its natural environment and behaviors.
What if you try to catch someone else's pokemon? A pokeball prevents re-capture of an already registered pokemon. A capture styler can be used to capture an owned pokemon (this is often done to return lost pokemon, or soothe agitated or injured ones) but it does not change the ownership of the Pokemon.
Is there skill involved? There is strategy in Pokeball capturing, especially via battle. But theoretically, one could still bombard even a legendary pokemon with enough pokeballs and capture it by sheer statistical chance. Proper use of a capture styler requires education and training. Even if someone stole a capture styler, they would not automatically be able to use it.
What if someone "bad" tries to catch a pokemon? Anyone can buy and use a pokeball regardless of intentions. A capture styler conveys the intentions of the ranger. No matter how skilled/experienced, a person could not capture a pokemon they wished to harm in an unmodified/unhacked styler.
What about evil teams? Criminal organizations where pokeballs are readily available (Johto, Kanto, Hoenn, etc.) have simply used regular pokeballs for purposes of robbery, poaching, etc. Evil teams in regions where capture stylers are popular (Fiore, Almia, and Oblivia) have either heavily modified an experimental styler (Super Stylers) or needed to invent and produce an entirely new capture system (Gigaremo, Capture Gauntlet). This vastly limited available supply to team members, and speed of plans. I'm going to repeat that bit. Without access to pokeballs, evil teams found it easier to make, manufacture and distribute their own inventions than to use capture stylers for crime.
What happens if you defeat a criminal using a pokemon? Defeating a criminal (such as an evil team member) in a trainer battle may lead to an arrest, but they may also run away and keep the pokemon they own. When using a styler to capture pokemon controlled by other means (e.g. gigaremo units) the pokemon return to the wild.
You see why I think it's insane that of these two methods, one is meticulously regulated, and the other can be bought for pocket change at a corner store? In case anyone lacks reading comprehension, I'm not saying pokeballs make people evil. But it is a hell of a lot easier to commit crimes like mass trafficking with pokeballs than with stylers. And even well meaning, perfectly nice people can do things like drastically alter local pokemon populations by catching many in a short time span, or releasing them inappropriately. Pokeballs are insane and I'm so tired of people thinking I'm the weird one for saying so.

Hello! I'm Lark, a ranger primarily based in Fiore (though missions require travel sometimes, as I'm sure you know). No particular questions- just wanted to introduce myself. The union operators do great work for big-picture coordination, but I always find it helpful to meet fellow rangers and get to put names to faces, so to speak. Let me know if I can be of help!
Welcome to the Ranger Association.
It's always good to know about more people who are here to help people and pokemon.
If you're part of the Special Ops Rangers, make sure you're keeping up with your styler maintence, a lot of recruits didn't do that, and it was a whole issue.
One of my friends is a Special Ops, and they told me about how they hadn't kept up with it, and it completely glitched out in the middle of a serious mission.
If you're a Field Ranger like myself, then you might not see the level of action the Special Ops get, but we need more Field Rangers to keep our regions running smoothly.
No matter what, as long as you want to help people and pokemon, I'm sure you'll do well.
Make sure you check the Ranger Net and join some group chats, I can link you to a fun one we have for memes.

Is-is your friend ok??? Cause like, a wolf Absol telling him shits going down seems….Major?
she's perfectly fine. she's known this absol for a long time, and they have one of the most incredible relationships i've ever seen between a ranger and a wild pokemon!
some backstory: this absol, who's known as kui, lived in orre back before the cipher incidents. she spent a lot of her time hanging around an elder of the local o'odham tribe, and she would indeed alert for potential disasters such as sudden sandstorms. when the wild pokemon disappeared from orre, kui disappeared with them. she's only been spotted again as wild populations are being rebuilt.
the first thing that kui alerted to my friend was a true disaster, a collapsing building in eclo canyon where some kids were hanging out and could have been trapped. but after my friend stylered kui, they synced up in the way that only a capture styler can really do. my friend spends a lot of time addressing small issues in the wild, and kui started leading her to all kinds of minor problems for her to fix. it's unusual behavior for an absol, since they normally only alert for severe events; we think a combination of how long kui has lived around people and my friend's skill as a ranger influenced this behavior. recently, my friend called upon kui for help in dealing with some poachers attempting to capture a protected population of mareep, and afterwards, kui revealed something known as a ranger sign to my friend. which is so cool! it's a special symbol that a ranger can draw using a specialized styler mode, and if the pokemon that gave the sign is close enough, it'll come running to help the ranger.
it's the kind of story that makes me so proud to be a ranger and be part of the unique bond rangers form with the pokemon they help. this is not a typical interaction with an absol, so it's not something anyone should try to replicate. but it's definitely a positive relationship, and usually when kui wants my friend for something these days, it's as simple as a nest that's fallen out of a tree!

Hello, fellow Pokemon Ranger fans!
Are you as obsessed with the Ranger series as I am? Do you want to use the in-game capture disc cursor (and more!) on your own personal computer? Well you're in luck! I'm a gigantic Ranger nerd with a little bit of free time and a modicum of computer skills, and so I've put together a full set* of Ranger-themed cursors! For free! Just go to the google drive link listed below, follow the attached instructions, and Ranger-ify your computer to your heart's content!
*Please note that the cursors and instructions were designed with Windows users in mind. If Mac has different cursors than Windows, those will not be available, nor will my instructions for using the cursors apply on Mac devices. Sorry :(
**The image I've provided is just a sample of the cursors available, to prove I'm not lying out my ass lmao. The full set of cursors is inside the zip file in the drive folder.
***ALSO: A good portion of these cursors are animated, including the normal cursor. However, in case you're afraid your computer can't handle constant animation, or you just find it distracting, the normal cursor has an animated and static version. They're labeled in the files.

boothill x pkmn friends, but as a pkmn ranger (I miss those games)
they enjoy each other's company around a campfire at night when possible
[ID: digital drawing of boothill as a pokemon ranger with a partner braviary, a capture styler, and 5 other partner pokemon. He wears his hat in his portrait and his hair is tied into a long ponytail. He also wears a dark turtleneck with an open cropped jacket (similar to original design) that has a red scarf pinned to his chest with a star medallion. His partner pokemon is braviary, and his styler is black and in the shape of a barcode scanner (tiny gun shape). His other partner pokemon are mudsdale, brambleghast, orthworm (with a cowboy hat!), maractus, and drakloak]

Pokéballs (and by extension capture stylers) are safe to go through airport scanners, however the Pokémon inside must be released beforehand to prove you're actually transporting a Pokémon and not, y’know, anything illegal.
Occupied Pokéballs also must be transported in hand luggage only, to avoid the Pokémon being accidentally released into the cargo hold.
The Pokémon will also require its own documentation and passport to prove it's not being smuggled, and that it has a clean bill of health.

Wild Kratts x Pokemon Headcannons
Feel free to use these if you wanna write fics.
If the Wild Kratts were from the Pokemon world:
The Wild Kratts are a team of traveling Pokemon rangers and researchers. Martin and Chris are the primary rangers and field researchers, Aviva and Koki are the engineers and data analysts, and Jimmy pilots their ship and is the primary cook and social media handler.
All of them can use a capture styler to some degree, even Jimmy. Martin and Chris are the best at using them because they do most of the field work, then Aviva and Koki, then Jimmy.
All of them train Pokemon. Martin is a water specialist, Chris is a grass specialist, Aviva is a fairy specialist (but likes all cute Pokemon), Koki is an Eeveelution trainer (and has both forms of Ninetales), and Jimmy has no preference.
Jimmy is the only member of the team to have completed a league run, being Unova. Going by the anime setting, he got to the top 4 in the conference. Going by the game setting, he managed to beat Grimsley and came close to beating Marshal.
From best to worst in terms of battling skill, Jimmy is the best, then Martin, Chris, Aviva, and Koki.
With the exception of Aviva, everyone is originally from Unova. Aviva is originally from Paldea.
The Tortuga HQ is modeled after Drednaw and is called the Drednaw HQ.
When they run into Wild Kratts Kids, they give them tips on raising and training Pokemon and helping and approaching wild Pokemon.
If the Wild Kratts were sent to the Pokemon world:
They'd all instantly go crazy over the plethora of Pokemon to study. Their own insights on their animals may also help researchers and trainers.
They constantly compare Pokemon with animals.
Out of curiosity, one of the bros tries to activate a creature power suit using a Pokemon that is similar to the animal genetically, like activating zebra power with a Blitzle or Zebstrika. It works, but the resulting suit looks a mix of the animal and the Pokemon and it only has the animal's abilities. The suit also malfunctions, causing the brother who activated the suit to speak using puns on the Pokemon's name and it can't be deactivated until Aviva fixes it. The suit, however, does allow the brother to understand Pokemon speech.
Aviva and Koki soak up the Pokemon world's tech like a sponge. It takes a long time before Aviva is able to create a Pokemon power disc.
A Pokemon power disc for a Pokemon that can evolve can switch between forms.
Jimmy easily takes to learning about Pokemon battling thanks to his video game skills.
Villain headcannons, most can be used in either of the above scenarios:
Zach steals Pokemon from the wild and uses them to power his robots. If Zach was from the Pokemon world, he'd sell his robots to poachers. After he's defeated, the Pokemon he captures are released.
Donita raids wild Pokemon for materials for her luxury lines, like Clamperl pearls and Flabebe flowers. After she's defeated, the Pokemon she captures are released and the stuff she steals are returned or compensated for if possible.
Gourmand hunts wild Pokemon to use as ingredients. After he's defeated, the Pokemon he captures are released.
Pre-redemption, Paisley tries destroying nature to build facilities. Post-redemption, she takes inspiration from nature to build in a way to protect it.
If the villains were sent to the Pokemon world, they'd initially be bewildered with how often they get thwarted by people other than the Wild Kratts because normal trainers would pick fights with them when they get up to their schemes.
Edit: I forgot the most important headcannon: Martin nicknames every wild Pokemon they get close to, and those Pokemon recognize him and the other Wild Kratts whenever they run into each other.

A history of Ranger Capture Stylers (from the view of the various models)
Howdy! This is a post I have been meaning to make for a while, this is essentially a list of every (publicly known) Capture Styler, not all of these will have photos but I have done by best none the less. Now first as many people know Hastings was originally going to call the device we know as a Styler "The Capture Loopy-Looper" and this is where some weird naming nonsense comes into play. So the first ever "Styler" was the Proto-Styler.
Proto-Styler.
Or as it is labeled the S.T.Y.L.E.R. (Spin-Tuned Yoked Link for Emotional Regulation), this was the first ever styler, its a bulky machine about the old style Poke-Center healers they used in Kalos, or for a less specific example about the size of two Metagross staked ontop one another. This big ol' boy had a small screen and a keyboard used to direct the Capture Disc. The capture disk for this original was about a foot across and weighed about 10 lbs. The machine itself required a constant power supply to run and was basically stationary so it wasn't very useful. Not to mention you had to do the calculations for how far the disc had to move yourself before typing in those numbers in on the keypad. It gets its mention here for being the first device to do basically what the modern Styler does today. Now onto the weird naming, so the Ranger Union and Hastings himself refer to this device as either a "Proto-styler" "The Prototype Styler" or "The Looper" however Hastings' documentation and patents call it the acronym I listed at the start of this section. From what I was able to find by looking through old interviews with Hastings it looks like the "The Capture Loopy-Looper" name was played around with because he feared the S.T.Y.L.E.R. acronym would be too weird for most people to understand and it wasn't until he noticed that his assistants were calling the new portable model they were working on a "Styler" to avoid saying the long official name did he decide to change it to the "Capture Styler" we know today.
Styler MK. 1
This is the first version of the Capture Styler and the first one I ever used, when I joined the rangers these guys were in their prime so its what I am most comfortable with even if that is kind of crazy. So the MK. 1 has a hand held section that's similar in design to the the fine styler but has an antenna like the MK 2 with the MK 1's antenna being about as long as the device itself. You hold it like you would hold a TV remote and make gestures to guide the Capture disk, the disk itself is released from a launcher on the bottom end of the handheld. The handheld is connected by a wire to a large battery pack. The larger ones could be worn as backpacks with the smaller ones hanging from your hip. These bad boys had enough power to keep the Styler charged for a whole three capture (six with the backpack sized pack). And if the disk was hit by a pokemon that would essentially knock you down a capture. It was not the best but it did its job, though I will never be as fit as I was back then lugging a 40 lbs. Battery pack to base so I could swap it out with a fresh one and continue work after capturing a beedrill. The one upside of the MK. 1 is the capture effect tended to be much stronger than with the modern stylers, as such if a capture with a MK. 1 would take 3 loops it might take a modern Styler 7 or 8 loops. But for most people that doesn't make up for the downsides, it cant use Pokemon Assist, it cannot be charged using pokemon and power cable on the handheld is damaged or severed its down for the count. The disks themselves were rather large not as big as those for "The Looper" but they still weighed a whole 3 lbs. and really hurt if you didn't seat them properly into the launcher, I am getting phantom toe pain just thinking about it.
Styler MK. 2 The second version of the Styler was a massive upgrade, it first introduced an internal battery, the disk was more durable so instead of losing a third of your charge from any contact the disk itself loses charge, pokemon can now recharge the styler.
Tumblr media
The MK. 2 is one of those stylers most people think of when the imagine a pokemon ranger the hand-held device with the top and the pointing. It is the first Styler to be able to use Pokemon Assists. Styler MK. 3
Now we get to the not-so-fun part of this history, now if you look at the MK. 2 you will notice they were manufactured by "Mill Bros. Electronics" who used to be a large electronics manufacturing company in the Fiore region, though they had factories in many places. For the MK. 2 they had been hired to mass produce the stylers, and they were also tasked with the same for the MK. 3 however by this time Mill bros. was doing pretty poorly, they had just lost their factory in Fall City, which was one of their largest and had also lost contracts with a few other companies they had been producing products for, so with money tight they decided to cut some corners, specifically with the battery, the batteries planned for the MK 3 were heavy duty numbers designed to take a beating and handle electric type attacks like a champ, instead Mill Bros. used a weaker and cheaper battery and hoped no-one would notice, and probably they would have gotten away with it, except these batteries had a tendency to explode rather violently often injuring the rangers using them with nearly 300 injuries related to it in the first year (most were minor, just mild burns, others not so much) needless to say Mill Bros. does not exist anymore and the ranger union has their own manufacturing company now. As for the MK. 3 Itself it looks like a MK. 4 (what most people associate with a student styler) just slightly larger, with a longer handle, the handle was deigned to stick out of the hip-holster designed for it, so it could be pulled out at a moment's notice. You can tell a MK. 3 from a MK. 3.5 or 4 by looking for the Mill Bros. logo on the bottom of the device near the charging port (there will also be the model number MB30141). If you find you have been issued a MK. 3 or fine one in like a drawer or something you can turn it in to the ranger union for ₽2500, or 1 years worth of credit at the Ranger Union HQ cafeteria. Styler MK. 3.5 A rapid follow up to disaster of the MK 3. was the 3. 5 they look almost identical to the MK 3 but use a smaller more stable batter and tend to be slighter smaller over all. Not much to say it is just the MK 3 but does not explode.
Styler MK. 4
This is the styler most rangers reading this have use or have used, if you have been to any ranger academy you have used a modified MK. 4
Tumblr media
Small compact with the disc being released from the yellow launcher seen on the head of the device. These guys are still in wide use today and are designed to be semi-disposable, if it is damaged just turn it back in for repair or replacement.
Fine Styler (MK. 5)
The Fine Styler aka the MK. 5 is a more powerful version of the MK. 4. It is strapped to the wrist instead of held in the hand and require a lot more training to use.
Tumblr media
Super Styler (MK. 5.?)
Not much is known about this one so I wont be covering it, but I know if I did not list it I would have to deal with the tsunami of people saying I forgot it.
Styler MK. 7
Tumblr media
The most recently released styler, its designed to be worn on the wrist similar to a watch and is similar in power and features to the Fine Styler in a much smaller package. It also has a built in AI that can help keep the ranger informed. These came out last year and I have yet to see one in person so I can say too much on how effective they are but the Union seems proud of them.
So yeah, thats all the publicly available styler models, for those interested I use a modified MK 1. (the union let me keep it after I retired, an antique for an antique I guess haha) I modified it to use a MK 2. Capture Disk so its a lot more useful. It's not winning any awards for looks though.
Anyway hope I was able to teach you something, stay safe out there.

The sketch of this idea was 80% done by November 2023 but I could only fully complete the illustration in the latest days because many things happened and getting ill by the end of the year certainly didn't help. It was about time I had something new to show from the Soul(mate)s of Light AU!
Destiny bonding with a Shiny Latios has been in my ideas list since 3 years ago, but it got reinforced thanks to Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs and the disclosure of Ash Ketchum's animé arc. Long-story short: Destiny rescues a rare Shiny Latios in her original adventures in Hoenn region as a Trainer. Grateful, this rare Pokémon offered flights in the region anytime she would play the Eon Flute. She nicknamed him Delta due to this reason and others! Later as an adult, she's one of the fewest Rangers capable to use Involiths. Whenever her Fearow's flight power isn't enough, she can summon Delta's help with her Capture Styler!

Pokemon Headcannons
Pokemon Rangers are not affiliated with the Pokemon League.
In the games they seem to be a separate organisation with ranks and stuff independent of the League.
Instead they operate as a separate organisation, more akin to an environmental protection agency/rescue service/charity thing. They focus on preserving nature as it is and thus are sometimes at conflict with the Pokemon League which will remove and relocate Pokemon sometimes.
The Pokemon League oversees Trainers, Gym leaders, the League Trainers like the Gym leaders and Elite Four, and various other jobs related to Pokemon Training and Batteling.
Pet Pokemon - Pokemon that do not battle as their Trainers do not have a licence - are monitored by the League and by the law enforcement in the area.
Rangers are a newer organisation, created after the Capture Styler was established. They work alongside law enforcement and often take on issues that take extended periods of time - such as tracking down and protecting Mythical Pokemon and important Pokemon/landmarks that preserve the nature in the area (think the various tribes of Pokemon in various jungles in the anime/the Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden).
Rangers typical deal with natural disasters and poachers and the League typically deals with things like Pokemon safety under their Trainers, Pokemon thieves, illegal Trainers, etc.

What happens when you release a Pokemon from styler capture? Do they forget that they trusted you a moment ago, and immediately run off? Do some want to stick around even after being released?
they basically just go back to what they were doing. it's kind of like...when you have a nice chat with someone on the train, and then it's their stop, so they say bye and leave, if that makes sense? it's not like they suddenly don't trust you, they're just getting on with their lives. it's a friendly parting!
most wild pokemon don't stick around, but every once in a while one will really bond with a ranger. this mostly happens with pokemon that a ranger has stylered multiple times, though it's been known to happen rarely with first-time meetings. our main goal as rangers is to keep the wild pokemon we work with wild, so ultimately most of these cases end with the ranger convincing the pokemon to go back. but sometimes a ranger will take that pokemon on as their partner pokemon, with approval from their station leader.
i've got a pretty good relationship with a wild staraptor that i work with regularly, and he sometimes sticks around to hang out near me for a bit! he always ends up leaving to do his own thing after a little while, though.
