Hi! I'm a different anon, following up on the anon who asked about working with flying pokemon. I work at a trainer school in Hoenn, and a lot of my students would say that if your relationship with that wild Staraptor you mentioned is so good, you should "just" catch it. What would you say to them?

it's because i don't think capturing him would be good for him or me. the only place i have to put him would be my enclosed backyard, but i've set that space up for my other pokemon. it wouldn't be fair to them to kick them out longterm for him. i'm also taking a break from taking on pokemon that have more intense care needs. going from a roaring moon to an archeops meant that i was doing a lot of extremely hands on, time consuming work. now that i'm in grad school, i want to be able to dedicate more time to my other pokemon as well as to taking in rehab and foster cases.

as for staraptor...even though he willingly chooses to interact with me, he's still very much a wild pokemon. he's generally human-averse and only tolerates me because i work with him frequently. i would never approach him without my styler on hand, and if he doesn't want to deal with me in a given moment, he just flies away. if i were to catch him, i could never provide a comparable environment for him to what he currently has. staraptor are really pokemon that need to either be on a battling team or actively be used as falconry pokemon. that's just not in the cards if i were to catch him! having a "good relationship" with a wild pokemon as a ranger is very different from what a good relationship with an owned pokemon is like. if he were captive, i'd be spending most of my time working with him, and he would see me as a source of food and safety. as it is, we're on good terms in the sense that i generally trust him not to gouge my eyes out with his talons, and he generally trusts me to hang around him and ride on his back when necessary.

it's something that's kind of hard to describe to someone who hasn't used a styler before, but there's a different kind of feeling that develops between a human and a pokemon when that bond is formed using a styler versus using a pokeball. while- ideally- a captured pokemon should respect its trainer because its trainer provides for it, a wild pokemon respects a ranger on a deeper level because of how the styler projects the ranger's emotions and intent to it. it's almost like there's a sense of equality to it. there have even been cases of specific wild pokemon entrusting rangers with the ability to effectively call for them using a special sign. that's a very different kind of connection than the one forged by capturing a pokemon. neither is inherently better than the other- it's just that, in this case, giving him the independence from me that remaining wild allows him is better for both of us.

Hello! I wanted to ask a question! We got to meet a ranger who came into class today and told us about the kind of Pokémon he works with!! I wanted to ask, what kind of Pokémon do you guys usually work with in Paldea? I thought there would be a lot of flying types, since they can go fast and help find people from high up! But when I asked the ranger, he got a funny look on his face said that it can be a bit tricky, that it can be dangerous for the mons and that while some birds are really smart, large scale jobs would wear them out too much and some of the reeeeaaaally big fast ones get a bit too temperamental and aggressive? The flying trainers I’ve seen at shows before make it look so cool and easy! But apparently it takes a lot of hard work, especially for the really strong ones!

Do you have any partner pokemon you work with? Or do all rangers use their stylers to work with wild ones? What are some of your favorite combinations too! The ranger who came in told us there’s lots of different kinds of work and the Pokémon you meet vary so much! He does night rescue, and has an illumise, I never thought you guys used bugs! He told us that rescue mons need looooots and lots of training, but his helps him out loads with coordinating special signals with the volbeat! Apparently she can work solo too! Well, at least when it comes to the volbeat. He had this weird looking dog? It apparently comes from Galar and it had a really funny looking tail!! He said it’s really good at scent tracking, and that he’s been trained to follow the bug trail through the trees if she finds someone! Do you guys have any Pokémon that work together like that with the rangers? Which ones?

He told us a lot of work goes into being a ranger, and there’s tons of different kinds. It seems pretty cool, but I think I still like flying types better. Some birds have jobs, so I’m not sure why you can’t use a braviary for them. A braviary delivering the post would be so cool! Mom said he was right about Pokémon needing a lot of training though, and that the bird keepers know their birds best, so we’re going to the library again next week to look at more books about birds!

that's awesome! i'm glad you enjoyed getting a visit from a ranger. education is one of the key factors of our work, and school visits are one of my favorite jobs. rangers absolutely rely on their pokemon partners to get our work done and also to keep us safe. night rangers in particular need their partners to act as their eyes in dangerous situations! the dog he had might have been a nickit or thievul, which makes sense for his work. they have a great sense of smell and tend to be more active at night.

most rangers keep a single partner pokemon, but some rangers do work in teams because their partner pokemon work well together, and many ranger stations have resident pokemon that excel at certain skills and can be borrowed to help on a job. our station at artazon has a resident fidough that acts as a support to rangers and their partner pokemon with helping hand, and we also have a resident arboliva who can provide emergency nutritional support and knows sweet scent to help calm pokemon down.

as for flying types, they actually make great helpers for rangers! flying type pokemon are indeed very helpful at scouting out areas in cases like natural disasters or missing persons reports, and they're some of the most common transport pokemon. not every pokemon species is suited to ranger work, but many flying types do just fine. staraptor are one of the most popular pokemon for a ranger to train to carry them in the air, and doduo/dodrio are common for riding on the ground. i bet he was referring to how they don't always make good partners for rangers who primarily work on the ground, because they need to be able to do a lot of flying.

i don't have an official partner pokemon myself, but i have a really good relationship with a wild staraptor that lives near artazon, and i often styler him if i need to fly. he's currently migrated for the season, though, so i've been borrowing hassel's dragonite when possible for flight work. other than that, i mostly work with whatever wild pokemon i need to assist me!

i think guardian signs has such a good mechanic for gamers with brain fog: i can check exactly what my main quest goal is in detail. it even tells me why I'm doing something too. it's not just a quest marker it's instead like "you did x, you discovered y, you are doing z" and i find that really helpful
