i've been getting more into judaism after being raised jewish. i was never bat mitzva'ed, so im wondering if i should do that? also wondering what other steps to take.

Well, I have great news! You don't need to have a bat mitzvah, you are a bat mitzvah! If you would like the celebration, you certainly can have one, but it isn't necessary.

I didn't grow up with really any Jewish observance, so I was essentially a complete beginner when I decided to connect. So, my suggestions come from personal experience and the experiences of some others I know who are baal teshuva.

Some more steps you could take to foster a stronger relationship with your Judaism is first to reach out to your local rabbi, and see what events or classes their shul has going on. Showing up to these opportunities can open doors to figuring out what feels right for you, and I've found that making friends who are at a level of observance that you strive to be at can inspire you to keep learning. If you get in touch with a rabbi beforehand, they could probably arrange to have you meet with someone who can show you around and introduce you to people. While this can be really intimidating at first, believe me when I say that many Jews will be happy to help you and won't pass judgement. Many Jews have been in your shoes, you're not alone.

Or, you can pick a few different shuls and just go to each one until you find one that feels right for you. Don't feel pressured to commit to one over the other. Don't get bogged down by the labels of movements. If you have a personal goal in mind or a certain aspect of observance you want to do, just start doing it, even if it feels awkward at first. Over time, it'll be easier. Find some local study groups, or join one online! During quarantine I joined a Torah study group from a shul hundreds of miles away from me. They didn't care that I'd never step foot in their shul before, they were just happy to have a fresh face who wanted to learn. You could also try Partners In Torah, which is a website that can connect you with a chavruta.

Chabad is always a great option for those who are looking to deepen their relationship with Judaism because they always have resources specifically for people looking to reconnect.

If you live in a place with a significant Jewish population, you could find a Young Jewish Professional's group that can introduce you to more people.

I would recommend getting a siddur with Hebrew and English, if your Hebrew is shaky. I would also recommend starting to read the parsha every week, or starting the Tanach from scratch and reading it like any other book. I suggest The Living Torah and The Living Nach by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan because the translations are in modern terms and easier to read, and they have commentary by Rashi. I also can't recommend enough Joseph Telushkin's books Biblical Literacy and Jewish Literacy, they're incredibly comprehensive guides to living a Jewish life by forming a strong Jewish educational foundation. Seriously, I've mentioned these books a million times on my blog because I love them that much.

Also, you could just start small! Saying modei ani in the morning when you wake up, saying hamotzi or the birkat, or even just saying Shema before bed can be a great way to start the process of opening up.

This last recommendation might be a little out there, but I think that doing some traditional Jewish cooking or baking can help motivate you to keep learning. This is how I started. I bought a few kosher cookbooks and just started making anything I had the ingredients for. It's not necessarily a "standard" way to connect, but my soul felt like it was reaching through time and space and connecting with all the Jews before me who had prepared and eaten the same thing.

As always, if anyone else has suggestions for anon, the more the merrier! I want to express my sincere excitement for you. Enjoy the journey you're on, don't be so caught up on "but I wish I was more observant this way" or "I'm not Jewish enough in this way" because it's all nonsense. Reconnecting is an amazing and life-changing experience, so enjoy the path that you're on, not necessarily the destination. When I first started, I was so insecure about how much I didn't know and worried others would judge me, but I found most people genuinely just want to help. Learning was exciting, and in some ways I'm envious of all the new experiences you're going to have. I would have enjoyed it a lot more had I just relaxed and accepted that it's okay not to know things yet.

It gives me agita,” she told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. “The antisemitism is eating me.”⁠ ⁠ The spreadsheet, created earlier this week by an X user named Amina, compiles social media posts, public statements and close readings to sort authors into categories: “Pro-Israel/Zionist,” “Pro-Palestinian/Anti-Zionist” and various shades of “It’s complicated,” including “Both sides-ing it.”⁠ ⁠ The spreadsheet also offers suggested responses to the title question. “If YES, it’s suggested you do not give them any money (purchasing their books, streaming their shows/movies) or promote their work on any social platforms,” a key reads. “If UNCLEAR, at the end of the day it’s up to you. I suggest refraining from buying/promoting until more evidence is out.”⁠ ⁠ To advocates for Jews in the literary world, the spreadsheet offered bitter confirmation of a climate of intolerance in which authors who are perceived to be pro-Israel are facing exclusion and harassment.⁠

You know...I was scrolling through my fandom tags and what do I come across? My fav fan couple wearing pro-palestinian garb and holding a sign that said "fuck zionists!" What sucks is that I genuinely like their art but I'm pretty sure they support Hamas (they just won't admit it). Sorry, I just need to vent...I feel like I'm being pushed out of a lot of fandom spaces simply because I don't support the slaughter of innocent people. I always love your content, it makes me smile so much.

Thing is, they don't even have to say, "We support Hamas." Saying, "Fuck Zionists" when that translates to, "Fuck the overwhelming majority of Jews" or to, if you will, "Fuck the Jews who actually believe Jewish people deserve equal rights, which includes the equal right to self-determination!" is bad enough.

It's equivalent to saying "Fuck feminists!" knowing full well that this is a call against most women, and specifically the ones who believe in equal rights for women, or saying "Fuck abolitionists!" knowing full well that most black people wanted to abolish slavery and fought for that from a place of believing black people deserve to be treated as equal. Someone holding up a "Fuck abolitionists!" sign doesn't need to also state openly, "I support the KKK!" You know what I mean?

And it sucks. It sucks SO MUCH to see someone that you appreciated, maybe even looked up to, choosing hatred. Just because it may be currently popular, doesn't make it any less an act of hate. You just keep your head held high knowing YOU didn't choose hate, no matter how popular and socially rewarded it currently is, especially in online fandom spaces, and that this matters more than all the good fandom content in the world. And also, that you're not alone. I think the Eurovision public voting has proven that the people who are loud, while still dangerous, are just that, loud. They use their noise to convince us they're the masses, but when push comes to shove, many people who might stay silent most of the time ARE capable of choosing the side that ISN'T hateful and violent.

40 years ago today on October 24th 1984 France arrested Georges Ibrahim Abdallah. He is considered to be the political prisoner kept for the longest time in Europe. There’s a protest for his liberation this Saturday (October 26th in front of the prison where they held him hostage).

Below the cut for the more detailed story.

In 1982 the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions (LARF) killing a CIA agent and a Mossad agent in Paris. In 1984 they wounded an American consul at the European Parliament. For these three attacks the LARF said it was lawful resistance against an occupying force because Lebanon was getting attacked by “Israel” backed by the US.

A couple months later, on October 24th 1984, Georges Ibrahim Abdallah is arrested in Lyon (France) for having a real fake Algerian passport (meaning the passport was a real one made by the proper authorities but the name on it was fake). The French accuse him of forgery and fraud but he is a member of the LARF so the US and Israel are not okay with such a minor accusation and start pressuring France.

In 1985 the LARF kidnaps a French guy in Lebanon to exchange him with Georges Ibrahim Abdallah. Algeria gets involved and contact the chief of the DSE (now DGSI the equivalent of the FBI) to negotiate the exchange and France accepts but right when it’s about to happen they conveniently find the alleged weapons used to kill the Mossad and CIA agents. So the negotiations are canceled and he is judged for owning guns illegally and fraud and forgery. He is condemned to 4 years in jail but once again the US and “Israel” get involved to get him judged for being a murder accomplice.

In 1987 he is judged again this time for murdering the CIA and Mossad Agents. To that accusation he answered that the people did not give him the honor to make him participate to these anti imperialist actions but that at least he has the honor to be accused of them and to be able to defend their legitimacy in front of court. He also said that everything he did is because of the injustice of human rights when it’s about Palestine. The prosecutor requires a 10 years sentence but the judge condemn him to life in jail.

The same year in 1987, his lawyer admits that he betrayed him and sold him out and that he has no regrets but France refuses to consider that it makes the trial void.

According to French law he’s been able to file for early release since 1999. Multiple different judges granted him early release but each times the US (Including your Democrats fav like Hillary Clinton got personally involved to make sure he would stay in jail) and “Israel” contacts the French government who then refuses to give the final approval for his release. Lebanon asked for his release multiple times but every time France chooses to stand with oppression and colonialism.

The chief of the DSE (now DGSI aka the French equivalent of the FBI) I mentioned before in the post will later confirm multiple times that “Israel” and the US pressured and threatened France to keep Georges Abdallah in jail and that this is about revenge not about justice. He also said that while people can disagree with Georges Ibrahim Abdallah calling these attacks resistance against oppression he actually did nothing wrong especially considering the context of Sabra and Shatila.

For context it took 17 years of trials for France to judge Maurice Papon, an actual Nazis who send Jews to camps and slaughtered Algerians, and when he was finally judged guilty of an actual crime against humanity (only for WW2 for Algerians he was never judged because you know some lives are juste worth more than others apparently) he took only a 10 years sentence and he was let out after only 4 years.

Because of all of this, the pressure, the suspicious trial… Georges Ibrahim Abdallah is considered to be a political prisoner which makes him into one of the political prisoner imprisoned for the longest time in the world and the longest time in Europe. (All the political prisoners who have been imprisoned for the longest period in the Global North are somehow related to Palestine)

It's like having home invaders that say you can stay in the basement of your own home and they get the rest of the house. I think he really likes having a shorter partner, additionally I don’t think he would mind Scars because he has plenty of his own. I think he would definitely find stretch marks that might be an unpopular opinion, but I think that Jason Todd would definitely stretch marks attractive. If you ever expressed interest in martial arts several and is the equivalent of a belt and most of them because he was shoved so much martial art training whenever he was trying to become Robin so I’m sure that he would be happy to teach you, but he would totally make fun of you if you messed up like in a teasing, friendly, loving way, but still. He’s definitely a “ I’m driving so I can control the radio” type of guy. Weird but my great grandpa fought in it and he was actually still alive when I was born.

I have old textbooks about WW2 and a lot of books about ww2. I mostly like to learn about what the Jews went through during that time and people that went to the camps went through.

I also can yap a lot about formula one and a whole lot about the drivers. I like other sports but mostly soccer (I'm american) and Formula 1. My favorite team is Barcelona and my favorite player is Messi because he got me interested in the sport.

10. Which Band of Brothers scene broke your heart the most?

There are so many, but I'd have to probably say it was probably Alex Penkala and Skip Mucks' deaths, they were so sad and I loved them.

Another close call is the scene where liebgott has to speak to the jews in the concentration camp, telling them they had to stay at a place where there'd been nothing but death and horrific events. That was really disheartening to me and I can't imagine what he went through having to tell those poor people that.

Just to make this even longer and to add yet another sad scene is Halls' death. He was such a good character and was so fresh into the series, he has got to be one of my fav underrated characters and his inevitable end or life was really sad to me, especially due to his connection with Winters.

I think Hall and Winters are a good brotp. So sad they didn't get more time together.

Another one is Babe and Guarnere. I know they both became good friends due to both growing up in the same town.
