thirteenth doctor and spymaster fic recs

all clear by wreckageofstars (8k, 1 chapter, thoschei/gen) summary: London’s on fire, the Doctor’s trapped in her own head, and only her worst enemy can save her. //I know I literally always rec this author in these lists, I know, but like if you've read these fics, you'll know I'm justified because they are all just brilliant. This one is no exception. The doctor and the master are so wonderfully on point, with this antagonistic push and pull between them both, whilst they both desperately try and avoid the fact that they actually still care deeply for one another - but they also hate each other's guts at the same time! And the master is there to cause problems on purpose whilst the doctor is an absolute mess post-Orphan 55 and making everything worse. An absolute joy of a fic.

the gardener by riptheh (6k, 1 chapter, thoschei/gen) summary: The Master kills because it's all he has left. Until it's not. //I had a reaaaally hard time picking fics for this post, because there are so many fics with thirteen and spymaster that I absolutely adore - but I knew from the get go that this one had to be on here, come what may. It's much more of a character study focused on the master than anything else, but of course anything about the master is also about the doctor - and it's such a beautiful exploration of the master and his relationship with death (and then, life). Just absolutely gorgeous - and surprisingly uplifting by the end? Anyway. This fic got me good, so definitely make sure you check it out.

the art of dying by lupescx (10k, 4 chapters, thoschei) summary: The Master resurfaces into the Doctor's life only to die—one burst of regeneration energy and he's back on his feet. And then he dies again. And again. She can't keep doing this. //The title might have clued you in, but this one is angsty. Extremely angsty. But, wow, it's absolutely brilliant! What a fantastic exploration of the doctor and the master pushed to their absolute limits and unable to escape from an awful, inevitable cycle. It is pretty dark in places (actually a lot of these fics are, so always heed the tags!) but if that's your jive then this story is just such a treat. Highly recommend!

The Frayed by luchia (90k, 16 chapters, thoschei, wip) summary: The TARDIS recruits a rescue team for the Doctor after the Judoon take her away, and the Master really shouldn't go. Particularly if it includes having to hang around a freakish temporal monstrosity like Jack Harkness. Then again, what does he have to lose? He could die, sure, but that means nothing when he always (always always always) comes back, whether he wants to or not. //Okay so, in my humble opinion, this fic is some of the best spymaster characterisation that I've ever seen across the entire fandom. It's exceptional - the prose is just so full of character, brilliantly unreliable and just so SO fascinating and painful in equal measure (can you tell that I like angst? I love angst so much). And also just the imaginativeness of the story itself is absolutely incredible? There's some fantastic things in there about gallifreyan as a language and Time Lord culture and TARDISes - and, of course, the doctor and the master are completely awful in the best kind of way. And if the word count looks too much for you - consider just reading chapter 16. Yep. Just that one. Like, that rewrote my brain. I read it three times the day that it posted, and I've lost count of how many times I've read it since then. So, like, please. But also you should really really read the entire thing because it's brilliant

Ust-Kut by yonderdarling (1k, 1 chapter, thoschei) summary: Unfortunately, the Master survived. Unfortunately, he finds her TARDIS. Unfortunately, he wants to talk. //Okay. So, this fic? Is possibly one of my favourite spydoc fics ever. And you might be thinking "but, taka, it's only 1k, how can it be?" - well, trust me, it just can. Short but sweet but an absolute gut-punch at the same time. Such a fascinating look at the relationship between these two, the push and pull and the knife edge that they're both on all the time - and it's so tactile? I think that's what gets me about it, if I'm honest. Anyway, absolutely beautiful writing - succinct, but boy, does every word count. It's just so so good, guys.

and without you (is how i disappear) by empty_of_dust (4k, 1 chapter, thoschei) summary: “It’s simple,” she says, impassive, like she’s not holding their very history at knife-point. “Start talking, or I start cutting.” //So, funny story, this author only started posting spydoc fic about a year ago, but oh my word, my guys, they are insanely good. They just get these two in a way that drives me absolutely feral, and their writing style is such a joy to read. I was extremely torn on which fic of theirs to rec, but I settled on this one in the end. The sheer concept of it is absolutely brilliant and gut-wrenching in the most spydoc way ever: a mid-s12 doctor uses the history between her and the master as a bargaining tool to get him to tell her what he discovered in the matrix, blood and biting including. But, yknow. just do yourself a favour and read this author's entire body of work because it is extremely worth it. You won't regret it, I'm sure.

i only speak in silences by daring_elm (2k, 1 chapter, gen) summary: The Doctor can't just leave the Master behind, so she sends him a hologram. //do you ever get a fic that you forget exists, and then you find it again and go OHHHH THIS ONE??? That was me with this fic (and, honestly, this author, who has a ton of great stuff that you should all check out). We all know that the doctor and the master are awful at communicating, but this fic is such a wonderful exploration of it - of the ways that they refuse to be vulnerable with each other, the ways that they are so angry with each other, but also can't help but be drawn back to each other all at the same time. An absolute cracker!

awake and unafraid (asleep or dead) by SleepyMaddy (5k, 1 chapter, thoschei) summary: The Doctor has trouble sleeping. The Master, in typical fashion, makes it worse. //There are so many fics by this author that I could recommend on a post like this, but a spydoc rec post has got to have at least one fic on there that plays with O/13, because it's just such brilliant, painful angst in the softest way. And there are a great many fics that explore it, but this one just takes the cake. Impeccable s12 angst wrapped up in o/13 softness, complete with thirteen making terrible decisions for literally the entire thing. Absolutely astounding writing, beautifully in character and just so painful in the best kind of way. This one killed me, guys. It killed me.

chaos theory by BlueLillyBlue (61k, 11 chapters, gen, wip) summary: The TARDIS has crash-landed in England, 2019, and the Doctor is acting cagey. Also, spacetime might be collapsing. So... Yaz's week isn't off to a great start. //Ohhhh man ok ok. This fic. Is a goldmine. This author is just absolutely SPOT ON with how they write thirteen, and their plots are just an absolute delight and tick soooo many boxes for me. They always make the world they're writing in feel so rich and real, whether that's a starving community on a frozen moon or a hotel in Cornwall. But this one is just so up my street because the master is in it, and oh my GOODNESS guys, it's just - it's just so, so good. If you haven't been following this one along already, then get going on that, stat!

together, we average out to dry land by hawkeishest (1k, 1 chapter, thoschei) summary: If she thought about it, really, this was all Ryan’s fault. He was the one who’d touched the statue. Though, to be fair to him, she should have known the temple would have some kind of psychic defence system. And now her head felt like it was cracking open. //I feel like most people have read this one because it's such a classic, but for anyone who missed it or is new to the fandom - this one is a must read. Absolutely fantastic exploration of the doctor and the master's psychic abilities and the connection between them, written with the most gorgeous descriptions. Just brilliant. Go check it out!

Old men falling in love despite themselves, Javert discovering love and softness and forgiveness and connecting with humanity, Valjean having someone who respect and love him but not put up with his love of martyrdom, someone who knew him since the beginning. Old men growing old together, reading together, gardening together, walking together, being SOFT together. I'm also very weak for the AUs where they both raise Cosette and end up falling in love in the process, with Valjean being the soft parent and Javert the stern (but still loving) parent. Marius stands no chance ("Alright, who is this punk?" "Now Javert dear, be nice. He is the one Cosette loves" "A pity, she could do so much better" "Dear...")

Clopin/Frollo : this ship is my guilty pleasure. I'm not sure why I love them. Maybe because the thought of Frollo being conflicted and torn for falling not only for a gypsy but also a man? The enemies-to-lovers/enemies with benefits trope? The angst? The UST? The snark? Yes. Yes to all of those.

FrUk : The ultimate OTP. The OTP of all OTP. The blood in my veins, the breath in my lungs. One of my oldest and most loved ships. They're everything. Old married couple who can't stand each other yet can't live without the other. They're childhood sweethearts, enemies with benefits, friends against the world, rivals being each other's constant in a changing world. They're so alike yet so different, they complete each other. Also, another ship who comes with a lot of flavors! Pirate era, FACE family, Medieval era with the Hundred Years War (or possessive!Arthur trying to marry his childhood sweetheart and having his lands too), the two world wars and so on! My two beloved Eldritch drama queens. I would kill for them.

GerFra : If FrUk didn't exist, they would be my ultimate OTP in the Hetalia fandom. That is to say, I do love them a lot! The married couple of EU. So soft and domestic, with lots of cuddles and working together, shopping together, cooking and chilling together but there's potential for angst too! Let's not forget they were enemies before becoming reluctant friends and allies before they became as close as they are now. I have a lot of fondness for this ship and only FrUkFr prevents me from shipping them with the intensity of a thousand suns.

john gets knocked around a lot — so what if it's monica's turn to be hurt/in danger on a case, and john's turn to find her or care for her afterward?

doggett/scully/reyes would be so complicated and interesting!! scully learning to trust anyone except mulder; how would it feel for john to spend time around william; there's a good chance this isn't monica's first poly rodeo, but what about the other two... etc etc any little bit about their dynamic would be fun to play with.

the real prompt for the ot4 would be "okay, but for real, how do they not kill each other?" but in a fun way.

this show is an old, old fave, so anything you write will feel like seeing beloved old friends again. pre-series, during, or post-series are all great, and i'm a fan of canon divergence! most of these characters get pretty traumatized by the narrative, and their relationships could be understandably fucked up as a result, but i like it when characters are good and loving at their core -- even if it looks messy while they figure themselves out.

i would love any fix-it that saves talia, with any combination of people involved

did lyta and talia know each other as young telepaths/psi cops interns?

for sinclair/sakai: i LOVE a reunion-of-exes-but-now-it's-right ship soooo much. anything along their journey, including a potential future where she goes with him to minbar or they otherwise reunite again, would be fun to read!

(note: i have read "to dream in the city of sorrows," so if you know it and want to use it as a backdrop for a sinclair/sakai future fic that's fine, but i'm NOT attached and would also love to see your canon divergence of choice!)

clone sam/jack: i love it best when these two are still themselves, working through some angst and alienation from both their past and their new lives, but also with hope for a sweet future together. there's such a good opportunity for tension between what they were and what they are, both personally and for their relationship.

what's something that used to be normal, but feels so different now? (e.g. if one of them is in danger or injured... but could be anything!)

after they survive high school, what's next? when do their lives start to feel like their own?

janet fraiser/daniel jackson: these two often fall together very easily in the background of sam and jack fics, but they have lots of fun complications of their own (their professional lives; daniel's past; janet raising a traumatized child...), and they have so much potential to be good and loving and maybe a little snarky together.

heroes canon divergence where she survives but it’s a close thing — how does that impact them (either pre-relationship or established)?

something set off-world, since janet so rarely gets to travel through the gate...

what if the war has lasted longer, and it had taken longer for them to get together?

for a guy with such a horny and bisexual introduction, his hyperfixations have mostly been on figuring out the town. but what if he poured that same focus into trying to get laid?

jade/jim & jade/tabitha - jade sort of bonds with them both. calling jim ‘tea cups’, having someone around who understands tech jargon, building something together, and i’m thinking about what’s going to happen in s3 with jim now that tabitha is suddenly gone. love the mystery solving team jade forms with tabitha, the shared visions with the children, conversations had in kitchens at night. love all these characters still desperately looking for a way out. there’s also the fact that they all arrived in town on the same day, whatever importance that may have.

jade/jim/tabitha - what better way to fix a troubled marriage than bonding over a shared annoyance of being attracted to this horrible, rich asshole who is weirdly charming and keeps forcing his company onto them both? because, come on, from season 2, they are all living under the same cramped roof. maybe the best way to get jade to chill out is for them both to just wreck him, giving jade that firm hand he so often needs.

Indiana Jones Series

*Jurgen Voller *Klaber

first: while i do find it somewhat interesting that voller’s plan was actually to kill hitler and become a better leader through the war, i would rather there be little to no politics in any fic i might get. definitely no glorifying of nazi ideologies, please.

time travel gone wrong - i think it's more interesting to believe any slight variation of the coordinates could have spit them out at a very different time, past or future. feel free to go wild with that, the idea of them surviving the crash or successfully parachuting out and being trapped in time.

any exploration of klaber’s loyalty towards voller, how they reached this level of trust, able to give and follow orders wordlessly. maybe expand on a scene or add in a missing scene. klaber is very tactile throughout the film and i find it very interesting that voller allows this.

an exchange of knowledge - voller attempting to teach klaber german, or bettering his understanding of history, astrophysics, man landing on the moon, or just the moment when he explains the antikythera and its supposed use. set against klaber teaching voller more practical things like weapons, hand-to-hand self defence, disarming techniques. there’s just something about the contrast of brain and brawn.

+ and as a final note, i would be very happy and very grateful for any treats. :)

I started rewatching Hart of Dixie (since I never finished it like 5 years ago) and it still amazes me to this day how they managed to pick a main cast where literally everyone have chemistry with everyone.

any headcanon about the past of trc!seisub? (p.s. your fanfics are sooooo good)

Awwww thank you so much! 🥰 also what coincidence because I am just in process of writing trc!seisub fanfic. I say in process because I'm a student who barely has time to sleep normally, let alone write fics. So I don't expect to finish it until March ;-;

p.s: ofc it'll be a sin fic :D how to miss out on ust and angst of sinful!priest/pure!vampire dynamic 😈

I do have some headcanons about trc!seisub and their past in general

First thing first, I doubt original world vampire twins were living in was 'safe' for them. There's official art of Syaoran and Fai posing with guns in what appears to be world similar to Victorian gothic times. Clothes they wear are very similar to ones twin wear on other official art (one where they're standing cuddled together). Also, I don't think guns are seen in trc except in acid Tokyo arc. More precisely - Fuuma's crew. Fuuma himself used a gun during fight with Kamui (more in 'shoo shoo go away' manner). So all of that led me to believe that maybe vampires can be harmed by guns in serious ways. If twins' original world had some specialized guns used for vampire hunting then damage could be even more severe.

Why would humans want to get rid of vampires? There could be countless reasons really, starting from fear to wanting superiority over creatures superior by birth. So being hunted in their original world could be one half of reasons why twins were forced to leave in the first place. Other half of reasons probably has to do with Seishirou.

One thing I'm certain of is that some sort of betrayal happened between Seishirou and Subaru. It's very likely that Seishirou was a vampire hunter in disguise that befriended Subaru for whatever reason. Who knows, maybe their relationship went past platonic bonds, maybe they really were lovers back then. Anyhow, I doubt Subaru had any clue Seishirou is a vampire hunter (maybe he really was a priest in his original world, aka just like in TB where he has a kind and noble job of being a vet, being a priest can be just as eye-masking facade), but it's also possible Seishirou didn't know right off the bat Subaru was a vampire. Still I doubt that part, Seishirou is perceptive and cunning, maybe he didn't know immediately but certainly did figure out in due time.

Betrayal from Seishirou-> Subaru side would be clear as day: Seishirou reveals his true nature and tries to kill him. I always headcanoned that something there went terribly wrong and Seishirou ended up being fatally wounded. Maybe Kamui got involved, who knows. Or it's possible something Rainbow Bridge style happened, Seishirou realized he could kill others with ease yet there's this one vampire he's emotionally unable to kill and was unable to accept he cared about someone. It's possible he realized on his deathbed he truly cared about Subaru.

Just like in X where Subaru was weeping over Seishirou's soon-to-be corpse and was unable to let him go, trc!Subaru would be a similar wreck. Just he has something X!Subaru doesn't: ability to grant life but at heify price. So he gave Seishirou his blood to save his life (if Subaru didn't bite insides of own mouth then kissed Seishirou and gave him blood then what's the point?). Somehow I'm inclined to think the turning into vampire part happened against Seishirou's will, that he was more than content dying in Subaru's arms in that moment.

I see Seishirou's reaction being either 'hehehe I got OP now, thank you Subaru-kun for being so kind, now I can chase prey that continues to elude me' or being angry. I don't think Seishirou would be pissed off about vampirism itself, but the fact Subaru imposed decision for him. That he had no control over what happened to himself. Hence it won't be too farfetched to me if Seishirou started dimension hopping for sake of revenge (also eye as price got roped into all of this, either half of his magic was stored in eye just like with Fai (so by giving up half of magic, Seishirou would have to rely more on vampire abilities) or there's some other special meaning).

I say started because keep in mind this is man with lack of emotional self-awareness we're talking about. Who knows for how long Seishirou was searching for twins. It's very likely he realized after some time he's actually searching for Subaru not for revenge or harming agenda, but simply because he wants Subaru.

For example, look at expressions Seishirou makes when talking about twins:

For a man that's allegedly devoid of emotions these expressions are loaded with emotions. That led me to believe he knows deep down he's not searching for Subaru solely out of malicious intention. Whether Seishirou actually knows why precisely he's searching for Subaru is also debatable. It could be an impulse at this point, something he feels deep down is right. Now what lies Seishirou possibly convinces himself into believing are his true goals, who knows.

Also Seishirou constantly says he's searching for twins, but I doubt he's intrested in Kamui anyhow. Of course, unless his goal is to really kill the twins because of their vampirism but I serious doubt he'd make such, dare I say, despondent expression while thinking about someone he wants to kill. Perhaps he wants people to think he wants to kill them hence he claims he's searching for vampire twins (accent on pair of them, neither is special by their personality but by species) rather than just Subaru (accent on bond they share, implication that Subaru must matter to him). Way of keeping facade for others and not showing 'weakness' I'd say.

And yet:

Apparently Seishirou shared this piece of information (a vulnerability) with Fuuma. Perhaps trc!Seishirou is a bit different from his TB/X counterpart and can accept his attachment to Subaru. If he did that then he'd truly not care for who he harms in process of fulfilling his wish. If he has to destroy a whole universe just to find Subaru (ahem, Outo), so be it.

As for Kamui, he probably hates Seishirou on his, well, bastard personality. He's not a good man, hides behind facade and is completely amoral and selfish. Of course Kamui would be wary of person like that, especially if Seishirou tried to harm him or Subaru in the past. I guess one of reasons why twins are on the run is because if three of them were to meet someone wouldn't make it out alive. So twins running for a lifetime would be status quo, sort of 'happy' ending for all 3 of them.

Okay, maybe not for Kamui, he'd be hissing for eternity

But ofc that's just my opinion and it's very likely clamp had something totally different in mind

H/D Suds Fest 2021 - Recs

This is yet another incomplete draft I’m finally publishing to join my other fest reclists. Suds has been one of my favorite fests since its first year and I had a blast with the 2021 collection, so many creative and sexy works across all genres, plus a few fics dedicated to one of my favourite kinks: watersports! 🛁 Is This Love? by @phd-mama + art by @slytherco - the softest established relationship fic you’ll read this week, I love so much the mutual trust and the ritualistic, cleansing aspect of a scared bath. Hurt/comfort goodness with all the feels!

Draco wouldn’t call himself a tender man. He fights the forces of evil for a living, trying his best to pay penance for the evil he’s done. He’s fought and killed in the name of duty, and when he’s not on duty, he tends either to play hard or retreat alone. 🍸 Ceremonials by @jackvbriefs (NR, 4k) - love the mysterious atmosphere and quietly growing UST, the kind of fic that slowly unravels itself and leaves you aching for more with a lovely hopeful ending.

🧼 Tastes Like Soap by InnerLilith (E, 4.6k) - I’m rapidly becoming obsessed with Lilith’s works, always so funny, refreshing, unapologetically sweet and hot. My fave brand of porn with feels and this is no exception, an unusual premise that transforms into an incredibly sensual

Harry goes to the foam party hoping to finally have casual sex. Draco goes to the foam party expecting yet another night of casual sex. Harry and Draco do not have casual sex.

🧹 Sports Star by @moonflower-rose (E, 4.8k) - delicious quidditch fic + watersports + exhibitionism aka perfectly crafted to meet my kinky tastes, I’m here for the teasing, the want, the desperation!!! So hot and addictive, unf I’m swearing here

Life as a professional Quidditch player involves a strict routine, and more hydration than Harry could have imagined. 💦

🏔 Tracing Memories on Your Skin fic + art by @iero0 (T, 4.8k) - an inventive and soothing healing fic that worked its way inside my soft heart. I love the thermals aesthetics and how these confident and mature characters meet again and gently come together.

Harry visits for his slow heartrate and shrunken lung capacity. He finds out he’s not the only one who still struggles with the remnants of Voldemort’s magic.

🍺 Float by @shiftylinguini (E, 4.9k) - this fic has shifty’s trademark combo of a light and casual get together, soft intimacy and scorching smut, I’m obsessed with how the piss kink just highlights the trust and want these two have for each other. So much character and heat!

After a night out, Harry wakes up feeling like he slept on concrete, like his body's made of sand, like he accidentally pissed on his housemate the night before. Because he did accidentally piss on his housemate the night before. 💦

🇮🇹 Postcards From Italy by @sorrybutblog (E, 6k) - sign me up for those magical cmbyn summery vibes with sweet flirting and scorching baths - a hopeful tale giving the characters the chance to live the life they want, it will make you want to live inside this Italian dream too!

A pool party, a nightclub, a bathtub. Draco Malfoy is the last person Harry expected to run into the summer before his third year of university, but he's not complaining (at least not anymore).

🪶A Grey Shrike Alighted upon my Wishbone by @opalesqueopioid (E, 7k) - brilliant and quietly devastating, this fic made my body ache with such a unique premise perfectly executed, haunting and poetic in a way only romantic tragedies can be. God bless the angst!

Cursed to forget everything about Harry Potter, Draco has to kill if he wants a cure.

🧽 Playing Dirty by @sweet-s0rr0w (E, 8.5k) - hilarious until it gets sinfully hot, I’m here for this chaotic Harry POV, his magic compatibility with Draco (!!🔥) and the amazing setup full of delicious ust! Such a great take on the locker room trope, if you’re a banter hoe don’t look any further and go treat yourself!

As punishment for screwing up yet another mission, and with their magic going haywire, new partners Potter and Malfoy are sent to clean the Auror locker room, the Muggle way. Will they make it out alive? Does Malfoy ever work out how to use a sponge? Do they actually even hate each other, or is it all just misconstrued sexual tension? How long until they accidentally end up naked? For answers to all these questions and more, read on.

💧Wonderful Electric (cover me in you) by @lqtraintracks (E, 10.8k) - surprising no one this became an instant fave, a gentle, liberating, unapologetic kink exploration that highlights the beauty of trust and shared vulnerability in a relationship. Unbearably tender, intimate and erotic, this is an ode to every kink enthusiast out there. The summary itself takes my breath away:

I’m never so tender with him as I am when I’m coaxing him to piss all over me. 💦

👞 On Target by @the-sinking-ship + art by @fictional (E, 13k) - perfect mix of fun and scorching, this fic has such a compelling “party atmosphere”, until it takes you into the hottest locker room sequence ever, sub Harry all thirsty for rough sex is now imprinted in my mind

A charity dunk tank, some sorry excuses for friends, a Slytherin with freakishly good aim, a (mostly) empty locker room, and one very small towel. Because, apparently, everyone is dying to get Harry Potter wet.

🌸 What Have You Been Hiding Under Those Robes, Professor Malfoy? by @thebooktopus + art by @mad1492 (E, 15k) - tattooed Draco’s a walking wet dream and we’re all thirsty for him! This is a masterclass in slow burn, I could cut the UST with a knife. This is sweet, honest, intimate and oh so deliciously hot, with a lovely ending.

After an accidental explosion in the Potions classroom, professors Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy have to utilize the emergency showers at the back of the classroom. Harry is surprised to find that prim & proper Draco is positively covered in tattoos. And… are those nipple piercings? You can probably tell where this goes.

🎙 Fly Me to the Moon by @caroll-in (M) - as always Karol cures my depression and makes me laugh like an idiot with her brilliant sense of humor and charming romance. I love this suds concept, seeing them content and domestic makes my heart so soft!

Harry has a problem. A loud problem. A problem that happens to live just next door and enjoys singing way too much. And frankly, they're TERRIBLE at it!

🪞 so rest your weary heart with me by @bluebutter-art (M) - epic, poignant, devastatingly romantic. An all-time favorite. One look at this and I’m crying like a baby, I’ve got zero emotional chill for what Blue changes inside me with her art.

After the war, Harry starts to use sensory deprivation tanks to induce psychosis-like hallucinations, eager to see those who he has lost one more time. Draco helps him get back on his feet, replacing the dirty flashbacks of the war with clean memories of love. A story of what is loved, lost and found.

How (not) to propose an Angel?

Summary:

-So, Cas, what I am trying to say is, would you marry me?- Dean says kneeling down Static, that is the only thing that Castiel can hear. This is supposed to be the happiest moment in his life, a culmination of a happy relationship, there is just one problem, Dean and him are not dating.

Aka Dean proposes Cas in front of their friends and family, there is just one problem no one, including Cas, knew they were dating

-So, Cas, what I am trying to say is, would you marry me?- Dean says kneeling down

 Static, that is the only thing that Castiel can hear. This is supposed to be the happiest moment in his life, a culmination of a happy relationship, there is just one problem, Dean and him are not dating.

Cas turns around watching the confused faces of their friends and family looking at them, Cas understands their confussion, he is confused as well, Sam looks like he is choking on air, Cas turns his face back at Dean, who is still kneeling down now with angst in his face, Cas wants to console him, but he doesn’t know what the fuck its happening.

 -Cas- Dean says finally breaking the spectral silence that has fallen in the Bunker- you are killing me, is it a no?

-I…-Cas starts, but he is not sure what to answer.

-Dean- Sam finally intervenes- What the fuck?- he asks, finally convening the feeling of the room

-Kind of in the middle of something, Sammy- Dean exclaims

-You cant ask Cas to marry you!!- Sam yells exasperated

-Why?- Dean says angrily standing up- You have a problem or something?

-Yes- Sam responds not backing up- I have a problem. You cant ask Cas to marry you when you are not even dating.

-What are you talking about Sam?- Dean says confused- Of course Cas and I are dating, right Cas?

 The angel in question doesn’t say anything. He still doesn’t understand whats happening? Since when are Dean and him dating? Is Dean cursed? Had they been transported to an alternative universe? What is happening?

-Cas?- Dean´s voice breaks through his thoughts- Are you ok?

-Am I ok?- Cas says, finally finding his voice- Are you?- asks voice shaky

-Well, I am not going to lie, this is not how I thought my night would go

-It is safe to say that neither did I- Cas responds- Dean, we are not dating.

-Of course we are- Dean says hysterically- Everybody knows it, right guys?- the hunter says turning to his family and friends- Guys?

 Silence falls again in the room. Nobody is sure how to answer Dean until Jody takes control of the situation by saying:

-Alright, those of you that think Cas and Dean are a couple raise your hands?

Dean raises his hand but he is puzzled to notice that the only other hand up besides his own is Jack´s.

-What the fuck guys? How could you have not noticed that Cas and I were dating? How could you have not known for that matter, Cas?- Dean asks

-Well- Emma answers- To be fair, we thought you didn’t know, dad

-How couldn’t I have known?- Dean asks

-Three words- Claire responds- UST

-You have to recognize you are kind of emotional constipated, Dean-O- Donna continues

-Not to mention, we didn’t even know you liked guys, man- Sam concludes with a knowing tone, until he turns around and notices that nobody else is supporting his sentence- Why are you looking at me like that?

-Because, Moose brain, we all knew that my father was bi- Emma responds to Sam.

-What Emma said- Ben responds, getting nods of the remaining ducklings

-Emma, we talked about calling Sam names- Dean says, getting a mumble from Emma before turning to Sam- And you, Sammy, I have a serious question. How, in Chuck´s green Earth, did you thought I was straight?

-Wait, what? I… but… dad?... posturing… what?- Sam.ex stopped working.

-Dude, what did you think Lee and I did? Play marbles?

-How was I supposed to know?- Sam finally says

-We weren’t exactly subtle- Dean mumbles- Even dad knew

-What? And he was okay with that?- Sam explodes

-Well, no, not really, he basically gave me a water down version of “Don’t ask, don’t tell” but he learned to accept it, of course that was after Bobby shoot him with a rock of salt and they have a very large and loud “conversation”, but yeah. He hated Lee till the day he died though, but that may be just Lee, cause Bobby also hated him, something about me being too good for him.

-And you all knew?- Sam asks turning to the group

-Well, as Dean said, he wasn’t exactly subtle- Jody answers- Besides there were a lot of clues.

-Dr Sexy, for starters- Eileen says

-The messy wee situation with Fergus- Rowena continues

-The whole thing with Benny- Cas growls with jealousy

-Well, I…-Sam says deflating and sitting down- I don’t know how I didn’t notice Dean, but I just want to say that I love you and I accept you as you are and I am sorry if I ever seem unsupportive.

-I know Sammy, I love you too, now stop crying you big girl- Dean responds, hugging Sam

-Jerk- Sam lets out

-Bitch- Dean responds

 -As touching as this moment is for everyone- Claire starts- I think we kind of get out of the topic at hand.

-I agree- Krissy continues- Dean-emotionally constipated- Winchester was going to explain to us why did he thought he was dating Cas and since when.

-Shh you both, don’t rush him- Kaia chides them- You will scare him

-No, please, do rush- Patience interrupts- My dad wants me at home sometime this week.

-I don’t think they will take a week- Jack says confused

-No, you are right Jack, they may take longer if we don’t push them- Jesse responds him

-Alright kids, enough- Cas says

-Don’t tell me what to do- the cambion mumbles

 -Dean…-Cas starts- I am flattered that you would do this whole proposal as a sign of your love for me…

-You don’t have to say it, Cas- Dean interrupts- I understand, you don’t love me back

-Dean…

-I apologize for making things awkward between us    

-Dean…

-I am so stupid, how could you, a perfect pure angel, possibly love me, a worthless hunter with 2-cents to his name?

-DEAN!!-Cas says stopping the litany and closing the space between them- You are the most insufferable human that I ever had the pleasure to meet

-I know- Dean responds looking down. But Cas puts his hand in his cheek forcing him to look up

-How could you possibly think- Cas starts catching a stray tear in his palm- after everything, that I don’t love you?

-What?-Dean says confused.

-Dean, you are full of love, you are the most caring man on Earth, you are the most selfless loving human being that I have known and that I will ever know and I am honored that you love me. Dean, I love you.

For a moment time seem to have stopped, before Dean closes the little space that its between them with a kiss, which Cas responds eagerly.

 The kiss lasts almost an eternity and they only separate when they hear a cough behind them, remembering them that they have an audience.

-Alright, kiddos, remember there are little children present- Jody reminds them

-Yeah, boys, keep these PG rated- Donna says

-Sorry- Dean responds blushing taking Cas hand in his.

-Dean, I love you, and I am grateful that you love me back but I am still severely confuse, why did you think we were dating?-Cas says, still confused

-Because we are- Dean claims exasperated, making everyone groan

 -Alright- Patience interferes, proving she is the voice of reason- Dean, why don’t we start easy? Since when are you dating Cas?

-Since the Apocalypse- Dean claims

-Which one?- Ben asks, getting a punch from Claire.

-The first one- Dean says- Don’t you remember Cas? We even sleep together.

-You did what???-Sam asks screaming- When??

-It was when we separated for a while, Sam. Before Cas and I tried to trap Raphael, I took him to a brothel, he called him a “den of iniquity”

-I am sorry- Kaia interrupts- You took an Angel of the Lord to a brothel?

-Yeah, I was trying to get him laid- Dean says- Needless to say it was a bad idea, but afterwards we started talking one thing let to another and bam we were fucking and then dating.

Cas can feel the blush coloring his cheeks and everybody´s eyes on him.

-Dean, you said it was a rite of passage- he says at the lack of other words

-I also said I love you- Dean says petulantly- Besides, alright, lets say that time didn’t count, but I asked you to teach me angel mating rituals

-I thought you wanted to learn about angels.

-I helped you groom your wings, which you said was a very intimate act

-I thought you wanted to help!- Cas exclaims

-I did!- Dean exclaims- Alright, someone cover Jack´s ears

-On it!- Kaia says amused.

-We have fucked more times that I can count- Dean says

-Well, yeah, but I thought it was more like friends with benefits kind of situation

-Cas, buddy, my pal, you threw a gallon of holy water on Crowley after the Summer we don’t talk about

-In my defense, Crowley is very annoying- Cas responds

-We had a threesome Cas, more than one to be honest- Dean says

-How could I have broken up with you?- Cas asks more confused than before

-You said you had things to do and it was better that I went back to my sweetheart, broke my heart right then and there after losing Sam

 -So I am confused- Kaia says- They didn’t know they were dating but they were dating or they weren’t dating but Dean- don’t do chick flicks- Winchester thought they were for some reason?

-I think they were dating and they are just bad at feelings?- Claire says

-I told you they were dating- Jack says, finally taking Kaia´s hands off- You just didn’t believe me. They have a profound bond, it is really not hard to miss, I knew since I was born

-I need a drink- Sam says finally

-I cant believe I agree with the Moose, but me too- Emma says

 -Wait, you are telling me that after everything that we did, everything we said, we still have a chance?- Cas says, eyes shining with tears.

-Babe, we are basically raising 10 and a half children together- Dean says- Nothing would make me happier than being your “official” boyfriend.

-No- Cas says surprising everyone, but before Dean can interrupt, he continues- You had a question you wanted to ask me, so ask me.

-Wait, for real?- Dean asks surprised

-Yes, Dean, please asked me again

-Wait a minute, guys, lets talk about this you cant get marry if you haven’t even started officially dating.

-Samuel, I am an Angel of the Lord, I can do whatever I want.

-Yes, Samuel- Ben says- Lets them get engaged.

-Didn’t you dislike Cas?- Patience asks

-I am sucker for a good and chaotic love story- Ben responds- So please continue.

-Ducklings, I take it from here- Dean says- Sam, interrupt us again and I will let Emma loose with a pair of scissors on your hair.

-Shutting up right now- Sam says, taking Eileen´s hand.

 -With that said, Cas, love of my life, my guardian angel, my best friend, we have been through a lot, we have had our fights over the years, big ones, we have survived terrible moments together, but we have preserved. We have a house, we are raising kids together, so here with them surrounding us, in the presence of our friends and of our family- Dean says, getting into one knee, showing Cas a ring- would you do me the happiest guy on Earth, Heaven and Hell and become my husband?

-Yes, Dean, of course, forever and ever- Cas responds with tears in his eyes, before kissing Dean, while their family cheers around them.

TURN by Saras_girl (E, 306k)

One good turn always deserves another. Apparently.

A classic. No one in the Drarry fandom can go without having read, or attempted to read, Turn. The kind of fic that make you question your life and decisions. The kind of fic that don't let you go untouched.

Twist of Fate by Oakstone730 (T, 302k)

Draco asks Harry to help him beat the Imperius curse during 4th year. The lessons turn into more than either expected. A story of redemption and forgiveness.

ToF is another huge Drarry classic. It goes without saying that it will grab you and not let you leave without finishing. The angst is brilliant, the canon rewrite magnificent. A must read.

Foundations !verse (Series) by Saras_girl (E, 364k)

Harry is about to discover that the steepest learning curve comes after Healer training, and that second chances can be found in unexpected places.

This series is composed by 2 main fics (Reparations (87k) and Foundations (236k)) and 11 adjacent oneshots. Healer Harry wasn't something that I knew I needed until I read this. I learned so much with this universe; about being human, about learning from one's patients, about working with people. Reparations is my fave Saras_girl fic.

The Secret Language of Plants (Series) by @llendrinall (373k)

“Just… tell me. Tell me what is going on, Snape.”

What was going on was that Severus Snape had no trouble tracking down one Petunia Evans, now Dursley, to a little town in Surrey where he saw how exactly she was treating her nephew. Which somehow led to last night and Severus knocking on Lupin’s door with a toddler half-asleep in his arms.

This amazing series is composed by 4 parts, and it starts with Snape and Remus stealing and raising Harry, while falling in love with each other. It's bloody amazing how Endrina retells the story with such a nice canon rewrite, and gives us Drarry with such a nice twist <3

Tales From the Special Branch (Series) by @femmequixotic (E, 1.214k)

When Gawain Robards asks him to form Special Branch seven-four-alpha, Harry Potter knows they'll have to work outside the confines of the law--even though they are the law.

This is one of the most intertwined and interesting Drarry plots I've ever read. The amount of world-building in this 5 amazing fics is insane, the backstories to all the characters are impressive, how everything connects in such perfect way is amazing, how the plot thickens is breathtaking and the sex- lol hotter than firewhiskey. A mix of Action-politics-scorching hot smut-Slytherins being aurors-Harry Potter being a hot mess. (warning: WIP. ;_;)

Light is a politician. What could go wrong?

Look at me: this is THE BEST POLITICS AU FIC I'VE EVER READ IN MY WHOLE LIFE. This is crazy long, crazy intense, it has a very very dark sense of humour, a very narcissistic and unreliable first narrator (Light) and it is such a toxic relationship. It's a utter delight to appreciate how Laura put it so well together, this is a literary recommendation for those with a strong stomach. Check the tags. (I've read it twice)

Naruto (Neji/Shikamaru | multiship)

Break to Breathe (Series) by @okamirayne (E, 1.240k). ffnet | AO3

Neji has always been in control. There's just one problem. It's killing him - and only Shikamaru can tell. But sometimes being pulled back from the edge is just as dangerous as being pushed there.

If you like Naruto and deep psychological plots, you should read this masterpiece. BtB is one of the biggest loves of my life. It should be published in a big editing house! xD Ninjas gone deep and real and raw and in love! This is a monsterfuck rollercoaster wrapped up in 4 books (1.240k). Rayne does a really good job in delving her fingers in the characters and making them hers but never making them OOC. Now my favourite Monster Writer is back and giving us a bit more of deep angsty-post-war-vibes <3

ML Fic Recs - Ladynoir

I think most readers can appreciate a good rec list, but it’s often the same fics that I see recced again and again. I get why they’re recced - they’re amazing! But I want help finding fic I haven’t already read. So I decided to be the change I want to see in the world. The rule: the fic must have less than a thousand kudos on AO3 (but I’m trying to limit to fics that have less than 500.) Obviously this means a lot of my favourites are not included here, but you’ve probably read all of those already anyway.

Chat Noir looked up.

“I remember my first kiss, but you don’t.” She hummed and tapped her chin, making a show of remembering. “It wasn’t a bad kiss, but we were in the middle of fighting an akuma, so I didn’t get to enjoy it much, either.”

Oops—that came out sounding a little, no, a lot more flirty than she had intended. Anyway, if she was going to commit to this idea, she may as well go all in.

It's a fair question.

The origins of this tryst are a little hazy in her mind at this point. Something about a lovesick akuma, maybe? Ladybug vaguely remembers Chat Noir getting struck by something, only seconds before it hit her too. There was a fight, or... there was something she and Chat Noir had been in the middle of doing - something important, like.... save-the-world important - before she'd dragged him underground with the sole intention of climbing him like a tree.

A scorned lover gets akumatized and gains the power to cast Lust. When it comes to distracting Paris' beloved superhero team, this power turns out to be... rather effective.

One-shot. Rated M. The UST of this one damn near killed me. It’s hot AF and I would commit homicide to read the conversation these two have after that lmaoooo

Friends with benefits. It's right there in the name, and it's what they are - friends. Best friends. This is just a way for two consenting adults to relieve stress after akuma fights, with the only person they'd trust with this level of intimacy. Really, what could go wrong? Multi-chapter. Rated E. The sex is really, really hot. It’s in character and full of emotion. And there’s an amazing identity reveal followed by “I’m so happy it’s you!” sex.

Hello Anon, thank you for this lovely message and what a topic!

I have set out below the cut why I think the dynamics differ but also some of the similarities and it got very, very long. Yikes.

DRACO

Draco is privileged, from a wealthy, pureblood, old wizarding family and immersed in magic from childhood. He's the kind of popular where he has his crew and doesn't really care if the Gryffindors don't like him, he is athletic and bright and he is described in a way that suggests he is attractive. Up until the point things really start to go wrong for Draco, he leads a relatively charmed life. He is a product of his upbringing, of his upper class status, he experiences a childhood where he is spoiled, loved and doted on, albeit he appears to be subject to high expectations of academic excellence and sporting prowess. With his friends he appears to be something of the ringleader and generally liked. He gravitates towards Voldemort because it's really all he's known, he's born into it. At first it seems Draco's views are driven by his desire to protect the things he values (wealth, status, power) and the privilege he has become accustomed to and, in the end, he sticks around primarily out of fear and self preservation. Draco exhibits moments of cowardice.

SEVERUS

Severus has an entirely different upbringing. He is working class, has a tense relationship with his parents, he is disliked and bullied at school which leaves him isolated, he gravitates towards solitary intellectual pursuits and he is described in a way that suggests he is supposed to be unattractive (although this reader would argue he has a certain magnetic charge). Lily aside, his relationships as a child seem to be shaped by a fascination with the power that comes with wealth and elitism, something he has never experienced. Sirius describes him as Lucius Malfoy's 'lap dog' and it is telling that Lucius is much older, a Prefect when Severus starts Hogwarts. He is radicalised in a way and gravitates towards Voldemort through a greedy hunger for power, a desire for revenge and a desperate desire to change his lot in life. He stays because, well, we all know why he stays. Severus is brave but grudgingly, acerbically so. The deepest insult he confronts is being called a coward by Harry.

FIRST ENCOUNTERS

Aside from the differences in their characters, the way Harry encounters Severus and Draco is completely different. When we meet Severus in canon, he is bitter, angry, jealous, grieving and indebted to Dumbledore. He is also in a position of power as Harry's professor. When we meet Draco, he is Harry's peer but he is also full of himself, an arrogant little shit who thinks the world is his for the taking and he thinks very little of Dumbledore, because father says...

This shapes Harry's encounters with them both. Severus approaches Harry with animosity, venom and a legacy of hurt that Harry doesn't yet understand. Severus places no weight on Harry's celebrity, he actively resents and despises it. Draco, by contrast, values Harry's celebrity initially. He wants to be friends with the wizarding world's brightest star and the animosity that follows between them flows directly from the sting of Harry's initial rejection.

ONGOING RELATIONSHIP

Severus wilfully misunderstands Harry. He draws connections between Harry and James based solely on their striking physical similarities and (incorrectly) ascribes the characteristics of James to Harry. He is tasked with protecting Harry but he does so always through gritted teeth. The curse of Severus Snape is to spend his life protecting someone who represents everything he despised as a child and yet the only person who can give a dying man that last connection to his one true friend.

Draco sees Harry more clearly but his perspective is shaped by jealousy and the sting of that first encounter, which leads him to make fun of Harry's circumstances and the people he associates himself with. He doesn't misunderstand Harry in the way Severus does, but he also doesn't know him fully.

MAGICAL CONNECTIONS

The magic that connects Harry, Draco and Severus is fascinating. Harry famously uses Sectumsempra on Draco without knowing what impact it will have. He then intentionally uses the same spell on Severus (unsuccessfully) knowing exactly the damage it will do. Not only does the use of the spell in both instances show us a darker side to Harry, but the spell was also created by Severus and he is the one that helps Draco after the spell has been cast. I could write an essay on the links this spell creates between those three characters.

Expelliarmus is another one. Severus teaches Harry this spell and in doing so, equips him with his most powerful tool in the fight against Voldemort. Harry disarms Draco of his wand and the implications of that in terms of the final battle are intrinsically connected to the 'signature move' of Harry's in battle, which is all about gaining possession of the wand of the attacker as opposed to trying to target the attacker themselves.

Avada Kedavra is also something that binds the three of them. Harry witnesses Draco failing to cast the Killing Curse, and simultaneously witnesses Severus easily casting it. This also is part of the broader relationship Harry, Draco and Severus have to Dumbledore. Harry and Severus are willing pawns in the master plan but neither are fully equipped with all the information they need. Draco ends up unwittingly being part of the plan but he is never a soldier of Dumbledore's Army in the way Harry explicitly is and Severus, with a gnashing of his teeth, also is.

Finally, one of the important similarities between Severus and Draco is they are both skilled Occlumens, something Harry is notoriously rubbish at. This skill suggests both are better able to bury and compartmentalise their emotions whereas Harry is unable to do so with any success and this plays into the fact that in both ships, Harry is likely to be the more demonstrative, wearing his heart on his sleeve in a way both Draco and Severus can better disguise/suppress.

DIFFERENT DYNAMICS

With all of the above the dynamics between Drarry and Snarry will always have a different slant, even if Harry himself is essentially the same. By way of sweeping overstatement, Snarry tends to skew darker and heavier because there is much more to overcome, but by contrast Severus has also spent his 'canon' years protecting Harry which creates this bitter 'Guardian Angel' type dynamic that, if you ship it, can be intensely romantic when they encounter one another again as adults.

The age difference lends itself to different dynamics too. Harry and Draco have that potential for young, dumb and in love, working things out, exploring, eighth year and spin the bottle sort of stuff that Snarry doesn't really have in the same way. It feels more natural that Harry and Draco would encounter one another as peers from the same year group, so part of the battle with Snarry is working out how Harry and Severus end up in the same spaces together in adulthood (Snape's canon death being a pesky inconvenience). The age difference raises another important difference in dynamic too, when it comes to the experience of Severus and Draco as gay or bisexual men, if you apply Muggle attitudes to same-sex relationships that have shifted over time.

The age difference is also relevant because there is a capacity for Draco to change his ways as he grows up, but Severus has already long changed his political beliefs and we know Severus as an adult in canon. That's not to say adults can't change their beliefs of course, but because his adult character exhibits moments of real cruelty you have a challenge around how this irascible, often mean, sharp-tongued character can give Harry what he yearns for when it comes to affection, love, family, security and so on.

There are hurdles to overcome with both ships and although the core 'enemies to lovers' starting point may create a similar overarching dynamic, the roots of those hurdles, the scale of them and the ways and ease with which they get resolved will differ because ultimately Draco and Severus are very different characters with quite polarised life experiences. They have some similarities, Occlumency aside, such as fostering beliefs during childhood they reject around the same time in their lives, albeit for very different reasons. Both are Slytherins who, their magical skills would suggest, are capable of pushing their emotions down in a way Harry can't, when everything for him is raw, on the surface, now, even though they both also unleash their emotions at various points. They are both prone to dramatics, to anger, to pettiness, to humour and in many respects, Harry is prone to those things too. In general though, I believe Draco and Severus would approach a relationship with Harry quite differently.

I don't think there's any one easy way to pinpoint the different dynamics in general because there is a huge variety of ways these three can be presented in fanfic, with its own plot, worldbuilding, external factors and so on. There are so many different directions you could go in with Snarry and Drarry so I'm only speaking from some of the things that strike me not only about the Severus/Harry and Draco/Harry connections/potential hurdles but also about the links between the three of them. Ultimately I think there is opportunity for deep connection, discovery, levity, passion and of course, delicious angst and UST with both ships, but they tend to manifest a little differently for all the reasons outlines about.
