there’s something off with your boyfriend and it’s bothering you.

over the past few weeks, your usually loving and caring boyfriend has become more distant and subdued. he’s still affectionate but you can tell it lacks the same loving sentiment that it once had. it’s like hes doing it out of obligation, not love. you’ve asked shoko and gojo but it seems like they haven’t noticed anything either, which makes you feel like you’re overthinking this, but there’s something that keeps telling you that whatever geto is going through is much more worse than being in a bad funk.

he barely talks to you anymore, often replying in grunts or little notes he sticks around the place, he barely eats and the signs of it are evident, his uniform being less flattering and his face becoming more gaunt. when you try to raise your concerns, he dismisses them instantly, often saying something along the lines of ‘im fine’ and ‘I’m not even that hungry anyways’ whilst kissing your cheeks as if that is supposed to calm down your anxieties about him. you’re currently losing the man you love right now, watching him waste away in front of you, while the world looks on.

you currently feel like you live in two separate worlds from each other, despite you both being in each other’s spaces all the time. it’s driving you insane how estranged you’ve become these past weeks, it’s like you’re living with a stranger. until one night you finally decide to bite the bullet.

“suguru, we need to talk.” you pat the space next to you, inviting him to join you on the couch. he does so reluctantly, taking a deep breath as he does so. “yes my love?” he says, playing with a loose string of clothing on your shirt.

“are you okay?” you finally ask. he stills for a moment and you’re hoping that he doesn’t take it the wrong way and shut you out of his life. geto’s shoulders finally relax as a strangled sob escapes his lips, “i watched her die right in front of me, y/n.” he puts his head in his hands as he tries to collect himself. “every time i close my eyes i see that moment—it was my job to protect her and i failed, y/n!”

“it’s never was and it will never be your fault, you’re just a kid.” you pull him into a hug, gently stroking his hair. geto crumbles under your touch and for the first time in weeks, all the dark thoughts racing through his head come to a standstill. it seems that the grief and anguish that came with losing riko renders him speechless, as he cries in your arms for what seems like hours. “you did what you could and that is enough.” you gently reassure him.

eventually he pulls away, eyes puffy and bloodshot from crying. “‘m sorry.” he murmurs, wiping his tears away. “i didn’t mean to mess up your shirt.” you take his hands into yours, looking into his eyes. “thats the least of my worries right now, i worry about you suguru, you don’t sleep or eat and it terrifies me that one day i’ll wake up and you’ll be—” ,you blink rapidly trying to stop your tears from falling, “gone.”

suguru’s heart lurches at the thought of that, of him being gone and you being left to pick up the pieces all on your own. so he wills himself to try—for his sake and your own, and so he does because he stupidly realises that is what love is about, the constant support and love that you’ll always have for one another which never wavers, no matter how many times be tried to keep you at arms length in order to protect you.

so he lets you wash his hair, his hair tangled and matted from weeks of not washing it, he lets you feed him, despite his protests. the intimacy of it all makes him realise how lucky he is to have someone like you in his life, that makes the unbearable days much more bearable.

and for first time in weeks, suguru geto goes to bed as a somewhat happy man.

lighter is a loser. idc i said what i said. behind all the cool nicknames and stylish glasses is someone who looks at you with so much love in his eyes.

it’s unfair that he is a fire attribute because he always ends up lighting a little bit of his clothes or hair on fire when he gets flustered by you. something about seeing you smile, excitedly laughing to him about your day, has him pushing his sunglasses up a little more and staring off to the side. the rest of the sons of calydon can CLEARLY see right through him though. they knew the ominous undefeated champion had a soft spot but seeing him loosen his red scarf and clear his throat was when they knew he was head over heels for you.

he doesn’t have the best memory but even he’d remember small details about you. what drink you’d prefer, which sunglasses he wore had you blushing like crazy. his love for you is quiet on the outside but deep down, it’s a blazing fire that cannot be contained.

my dark link thoughts coalesced into wonderful headcanons and crazy amounts of forced perspectives and dutch angles

Some thoughts below

I have thoughts about dark link that boil down to basically two things: 1. it's always the same dark link, and 2. dark link has a very difficult time changing.

No matter how many times dark link is brought into existence, he is formed from the shadow of link usually to test link's will. that shadow can be duplicated (as seen in HW) but generally speaking it's the same guy, sharing the thought space, you know how it is. In terms of sentience/thinking for himself, I don't think there's all that much of it. He is a dark reflection/shadow of link, so shares his abilities and thought patterns (for combat) with added aggression and. evil. i guess.

As said by navi, "conquer yourself", and all that. He's a challenge to the inner will power.

That being said!!! he can have a little bit of individuality, as a treat. Just in the form of being mean and sadistic <3 he's got thoughts, he's not just a combat doll (tho in times of low power, or a greater power having the reins, he reverts to that), so he can be frustrated, vindicated, happy, etc etc. though when your thoughts are mainly "evilevilevilevilevil" your idea of these emotions are a bit skewed.

When he's summoned for each different link, i hc that it's all the same magic, so the same dark link every time. he "remembers" in an abstract sense of his role in the same way a link or zelda "remembers" their own reincarnation. tho his is less of a reincarnation and more being used over and over again. a persistence.

The iteration that's summoned reflects the current link at the time, the part of link that needs testing/defeating, so it's not an existence that he himself can change to match the present. he's locked to that first copy/shadow only. So if he were to have a second encounter with an older link, he'd look like the first time they fought, unless he was specifically re-summoned. i hc he's got limited magic, so this is not something he can do himself.

in a links-meet scenario, his form would be limited to those specific forms of the links, and it would always be the points in time in which he first encountered them, unless there's other magic either he or someone else has access to to allow him to change forms to match.

now you might be saying at this point "wouldn't he be a weaker match if he was put up against an older link?" yeah probably lol. but also!!! i like the idea that with the limited magic he has, he's able to change juuuust enough to stay relatively evenly matched. being able to play to different strengths and all that. but the base stuff is still the same, so he is decently easy enough to read if link remembers the kind of stuff he was pulling back when he originally fought dark link.

dark link also knows about all this so while limited to the particular skillset, is able to adapt slightly.

but yeah been thinking a lot about a links-meet au where dark link is there choosing a different link to be every time he appears to the party.

though there are a couple links that he never impersonates in their games!!! so can't change into those guys unless he gets a new round of copycat magic.

UPDATE: i fully misremembered the 'grammar, stanley' scene - I thought Ford said 'he and I' (which would be wrong, and is what the original post was about) but he said 'him and me' which is fine. imo ford is still wrong though, it's a minuscule detail, and he's still lording his knowledge of academic "Standard English" over his brother who was forced to drop out of high school.

I do stand by that language is mutable and many different cultural and regional dialects use terms, phrases, and grammar that could be considered "incorrect" in "Standard English" and they're all completely valid dialects worthy of respect. Ford doesn't know this because he majored in cryptozoology and probably avoided humanities courses like the plague.

but obviously that's not what Ford's doing. he's specifically referring to "Standard English", to the kind of grammar you use in a textbook. and he's wrong. when used with a pronoun, the preposition "between" takes objective pronouns (me, him) not subjective ones (he, I).

the reason people do this is usually due to hypercorrection - in trying to avoid making one grammar mistake, they make another. someone probably corrected Ford once on switching "he and i" & "me and him", maybe even in a different grammatical context, and he took that correction and applied it to everything, because he's terrified of being wrong and obsessed with appearing intelligent.

like. even if he had been right, it's a shitty thing to say, especially given the context, but i think it says a lot about Ford's character that he was wrong because he was trying too hard to be right.

Thank you for the Q <3 I love and respect you, but I am going to bypass the first two questions because I am filled with thoughts on Buddy and Deacon's dynamic. Because I don't know if more people noticed (I'm 100% sure others have noticed) but Buddy and Deacon absolutely parallel each other.

What's Buddy's big motivator, as established by the Dreams By Night episode? To escape Ex Libris. To be free, essentially.

What's Deacon's big motivator, as established by The Book of Deacon? To lead his own story, without his parents controlling everything. To be free, essentially.

Buddy, from the beginning, harps on Chase's lack of preparation. Deacon, from the beginning, gripes about Chase's lack of preparation. Deacon over-prepares, to the point where Chase asks him what different scenes mean and what happens in the story. Something he used to do with Buddy, because both Deacon and Buddy indulge Chase in their explanations.

Deacon gets caught off-guard by Chase's perceptiveness, and Buddy gets caught off-guard by Chase's personality. And Chase might gripe about both, sure, but often about superficial, irrelevant details. Complaining about Deacon always being busy, or complaining about Buddy being pretentious. (Not about things of substance, like Deacon having enough money to attend college AND disliking the experience, or about not even knowing Buddy's name.)

We all laugh about Buddy being paranoid, but Deacon matches him pretty well. Deacon isn't spilling any names. Deacon, like Buddy, understands the necessity for secrets. Who makes the plans to hide Prunella? Who keeps telling Chase not to talk to Buddy about her?

(A thought for another time, but--something about kids of strict parents being sneakier, and something about Deacon always convincing Chase into keeping secrets.)

Deacon's being reasonable, and we know that, because we're listening to his reasoning, and his reasoning is nothing like Buddy's. (Buddy's all "EVERYONE is out for themself," while Deacon is a lot more subtly judging the shirtless Hot Topic wanna-be.) But their ACTIONS match each other.

Are they the same character? lmao absolutely not. They have different experiences, different mentalities, different perspectives. Deacon has a support system, whether financial (parents) or emotional (Bronze) or even social (Chase). Buddy has a bright eyed, stubborn kid who sees a vampire and somehow therapizes him, and sees someone covered in thorns and reciprocates their hug because he knows it was needed.

But how similar they are really shines in the Requiem arc. Deacon and Buddy match the other's barbs seemlessly, and they call out the other with ease. Deacon insults Buddy's fashion sense + teeth, Buddy tricks Deacon into nearly getting mauled by wolves, which is probably an escalation, and Deacon immediately starts plotting a revenge. "When I get my hands on him," he outright says, implying some retaliation, and yet he sees Buddy and Chase wrestling a vampire to the ground and immediately asks "What're we doing?"

He immediately joins them. He has no idea what they're doing or why they're doing it, but they're doing it, so he alas has to ascribe to it. And then you remember that Chase is the one who jumped Vamp, and Buddy ALSO has no idea what they're doing or why they're doing it, but Chase's doing it, so he alas has to ascribe.

They get each other, is what I'm saying. They're foils in methods (Deacon annoys Buddy verbally, Buddy annoys Deacon physically////Deacon chooses to maintain peace via secrecy, Buddy prefers honest communication despite the impacts/////etc etc etc) but they're mirroring the other. They're two beams of light, coming from the same source, going in completely opposite directions.

Buddy hurting Chase risked everything Buddy had gained, all the trust and the companionship and the grossly genuine friendship he gained. The physical pain risked ripping the emotional connection between them. Buddy hurting Deacon DOESN'T rip open anything, because however far Buddy takes things, Deacon's prepared to follow out of annoyance and spite alone. They have the same priorities: keep themselves (+ Chase/others) safe, and humble the other when necessary.

And Buddy has an embarrassing crush or something. everyone point at the idiot and laugh

See, I think if you actually have unbiased media literacy, you can recognize that Lydia's issues don't stem from Beetlejuice specifically, she isn't inherently frightened of him (and to suggest so is to completely misunderstand and infantilize her character imo, she never was frightened of him give me a fucking break lol) so much as she is by the reminder of her inherent connection to the afterlife, which ironically she's trying to fight against despite having a successful show about it. Like, again yall, it's fine if you don't like the pairing. It's fine if it grosses you out. What is wholly unnecessary is the suggestion that people who do like it are somehow media illiterate or just 'not as smart as you' or just not getting some elusive concept that only super intelligent moral people can for not also thinking it's gross.
