Five Ten Under 500

There have been a bunch of open tags on this one but @three-drink-amy tagged me directly so here goes. To start I have to say it's wild to me, as someone coming from small or quiet fandoms, and who joined the RWRB community well before the movie, that netting under 500 kudos is now considered a lower number in this fandom. A couple of years ago it meant a lot to me to hit 500 kudos for the first time on a fic. Anyway.

I've loved seeing everyone's lists (so many new fics added to my tbr!), but they've also reminded me that there is a definite recency bias, especially among fics that didn't already have a good number of kudos. So, all of my choices are fics that were released before the movie came out. Even with that, I couldn't stick with only five, so you get five more under the cut (and I still had to leave out a lot of fics I loved, including others from the same authors listed here).

Culper Ring, 1778–1783 by @historicallysam This is a series of 10 vignettes set during the American revolution and not one of these fics has over 100 kudos, which is a crime. So well-written and researched, and full of intrigue and feelings, I will always champion this series of fics.

Why Do We Even HAVE That Curse? by @cricketnationrise The Mummy AU. Who doesn't love The Mummy?? I might be biased because I betaed this one but if you love action and adventure and romance, you must read this!

The Way You Seemed by @orchidscript 1950s High School AU—think Grease but gayer. I think this might be one of the first Cora fics I read, and it bowled me over. The vibes, the romance, the historical accuracy, it's so so excellent.

Red, White, & Royal Ballet by @tintagel-or-cockleshells Ballet AU. Everything you want out of an enemies/rivals to lovers arc, and so much excellent ballet. Includes videos!

Does anyone in the fandom have a translation or knows anyone who understands the lyrics to the song Oscar plays as Nora, Pez, Henry and Alex enter the lake house? (ALSO! The title is Alejandra 😁😁😁). It's this one:

I've seen other versions of the tune with what I think are different lyrics (like Javier Solis' version, for which a I did find a translation - there, the song is addressed to this woman called Alejandra who he says is the "queen of his heart"). I'm having a tough time finding either lyrics or translations for this particular one (made even more challenging by the fact that Luiz Pérez Meza has two different songs named Alejandra 🤦🏽‍♀️), and I don't know the language.

I'm basically trying to get a meta done on the literature and music choices in the film. I'd appreciate any help with translation!

Lo so che nn sarò molto popolare su quest'argomento, visto il momento storico che stiamo vivendo legato al femminicidio.

Ma io parlo d'altro... Di quelle relazioni così totalizzanti che lasciano fuori il mondo ed entrambi lo vogliono e nessuno obbliga nessuno. Sid Vicious è stato il mio primo amore. Quando ho visto Sid & Nancy di Alex Cox, con le musiche di Joe Strummer e dei Pogues, e Gary Oldman che davvero somigliava a Sid... Beh, in quel momento ho capito cosa per me fosse l'amore vero fino alla fine.

Lo so benissimo che è la storia di due tossici col cervello spappolato, ma è proprio questo che mi attrae. Le storie "normali" non fanno per me, sono TOTALLY BORING. Ho bisogno di emozioni forti, imprevisti, nessuna pianificazione, fare le cose come vengono, vivere alla giornata sapendo che l'altro è come te e siete soli in un mondo di relazioni convenzionali. Solo voi vi capite perché siete simili e disturbati.

Ho anch'io avuto il mio Sid. Era un musicista, un alcolista e a periodi cocainomane. Beveva tutti i giorni e tutto il giorno. Sono stati i tempi più belli, tristi, divertenti, preoccupanti, intensi della mi vita. La morte me l'ha portato via da ormai più di un anno, per un tumore che non derivava dalle sue dipendenze.

Vivetevi il momento e prendete le occasioni al volo perché magari un domani non ci sarà.

I bambini e le loro paure quotidiane. Come affrontarle senza timori e con il sorriso? A Zoomarine Halloween formato famiglia con “Smaschera la tua paura - il ritorno” con la partecipazione dell’Ordine dei Medici Chirurghi e degli Odontoiatri della Provincia di Roma e dell’Ordine degli Psicologi del Lazio.  Mostri, fantasmi, zombie. Non sono certo solo queste le paure quotidiane dei bambini. Alcune sono tipiche dell’età evolutiva, altre dipendono dalla storia individuale di ogni soggetto e per questo, a volte, potenzialmente possono essere infinite. Nel “mese da brivido” per eccellenza, che ormai da tempo è associato all’arrivo della Notte di Halloween, il parco Zoomarine rilancia la seconda edizione di una campagna educativa che lo scorso anno ha avuto un grande successo: «Smaschera la tua paura - il ritorno», con la partecipazione dell’Ordine dei Medici Chirurghi e degli Odontoiatri della Provincia di Roma e dell’Ordine degli Psicologi del Lazio. Lo scopo è proprio quello di fornire alle famiglie una serie di consigli per aiutare i genitori ad affrontare i timori quotidiani dei propri figli, come il buio, gli insetti, la visita dal dottore e la puntura, il dentista, i mostri, i rumori assordanti, la separazione dei genitori e tante altre, grazie all’intervento di alcuni professionisti pronti a dispensare suggerimenti pratici ed utili a vincere i disagi. Il parco alle porte di Roma, diretto da Alex Mata, si prepara così a lanciare i suoi appuntamenti di (non) paura per fare in modo che i bambini possano divertirsi e giocare con i personaggi fantastici presenti nel parco e le cinque aree tematizzate in cui è diviso, senza dover avere terrore di vivere i vari week end di una festa formato famiglia. Dal regno di Harry (con tanto di bacchetta magica donata nella cena a tema di martedì 31 ottobre con tanti cosplayer) agli spettacoli di magia, con travolgenti laboratori speciali per apprendere i segreti nascosti dietro le performance dei bravissimi maghi del Club Magico Italiano sezione Roma. Uno show nello show nel quale bambini e ragazzi potranno imparare giochi di prestigio con lezioni gratuite, divertenti e colorate. Nel parco vestito a festa, popolato di zucche, scheletri, streghette, ci sarà anche il Teatro della (non) Paura con un palco sul quale si esibiranno attori e performer che potranno essere raggiunti anche dagli stessi che riceveranno un simpatico attestato che dimostrerà come hanno sconfitto la paura. Sarà, inoltre, possibile divertirsi con le varie attrazioni sempre aperte e visitare i percorsi educazionali con gli animali. Grande attesa poi per il 31 ottobre con sedici spettacoli, ventun attrazioni, fantastiche cene con cinque dimostrazioni e tanti artisti. Per i teenagers e gli adulti tre nuovi i percorsi: l’Orfanotrofio: Nel sottoscala, nel buio sussurrano i bambini persi, le Creature del bosco: dove è preferibile non entrare da soli, non urlare, e non fare il minimo rumore, il Galeone Maledetto con un labirinto all’interno della nave pirata, dove le anime dei caduti sono imprigionate. Tante altre sorprese, come l’attesissimo arrivo di Luli Pampin domenica 29 ottobre e il laboratorio delle zucche, dove i bambini potranno intagliare o pitturare la propria zucca insieme a tutta la famiglia per un Halloween davvero indimenticabile.

" Il 14 gennaio 1990 lasciai il Centro giovanile, dove vivevo e, zaino in spalla, mi incamminai per Korogocho. Fu la mia “discesa agli inferi”! Era la domenica del Battesimo di Gesù e celebrai con i pochi cristiani l’Eucaristia. Spiegai loro con il mio povero kiswahili (lingua ufficiale in Kenya) che avevo scelto proprio quel giorno perché avevo bisogno di essere battezzato da loro. Mi sentivo un piccolo-borghese che aveva necessità del battesimo degli impoveriti. Scelsi di vivere come tutti loro: in una baracca, mangiare quello che loro mangiavano, andare a comprarmi l’acqua con una tanica, vivere la loro realtà quotidiana, spesso violenta e drammatica. Persi subito i venti chili in più che noi occidentali accumuliamo. Soprattutto, gli orrori umani che incontravo mi facevano impazzire. Quante volte fui preso da un profondo sconforto, dal desiderio di sbattere la testa contro i muri della baracca! In quell'immensa distesa di lamiere che è Korogocho si palesava tutta l’assurdità del nostro mondo. Dai buchi della mia baracca potevo vedere i grattacieli di Nairobi, mentre a soli quattro chilometri da Korogocho c’è Muthaiga, la zona residenziale più bella e lussuosa della metropoli, con ville da sogno. Nairobi è una città nella quale, in pochi chilometri, si passa dal paradiso all'inferno. O meglio agli inferi: ce ne sono tanti in quell'area! Il più terribile, forse, sorge a fianco della baraccopoli: l’enorme e spaventosa discarica di Dandora, dove arrivano i rifiuti dei ricchi della capitale, per l’esattezza i rifiuti dei rifiuti; vi lavorano migliaia di persone chiamate “scavengers” (i raccoglitori di rifiuti).

Un giorno, mentre camminavo fra le baracche, fui bloccato da un uomo della discarica, un “gigante” che mi guardò dall'alto in basso: «Muthungu» (bianco), mi disse, «sei il primo bianco che ha avuto il coraggio di vivere qui. Ma chi siamo noi che non ti degni neanche di venire a trovarci?». «È da poco che sono arrivato qui,» gli risposi, «ma hai ragione! Domani, sarò da voi!» Quella sera una delegazione di cristiani venne a trovarmi. Erano visibilmente preoccupati: «Padre, abbiamo saputo che domani vuoi andare in discarica. Non puoi andarci, quelli sono criminali. Ti ammazzano». Restai qualche istante in silenzio, riflettendo su quelle parole: «Io non sono venuto a Korogocho per i santi,» risposi, «ma per i criminali». L’indomani presi lo zaino e mi incamminai. Arrivato in cima alla collina, fui accolto da uno stormo di avvoltoi, davanti a me si spalancò uno spettacolo infernale: un’immensa spianata con montagne di immondizie, ovunque fuochi, centinaia di scavengers: uomini e donne di ogni età, anziani e bambini… Fui preso dal terrore, il primo istinto fu quello di scappare. Per fortuna vidi quel gigante che mi aveva sfidato ad andare in discarica, Jeremias. Gli corsi incontro, quasi per cercare protezione. Quando mi vide, mi guardò con un sorriso ironico: «Muthungu, non pensavo che voi bianchi manteneste le vostre promesse!». "
